THROUGH THE EYES

uring the last week of April, while my team in Mumbai was busy shooting Ekta Chowdhry (winner of Pantaloons Femina Miss India Universe 2009 title) for the cover, I was in Dalian, China, where I was invited as a VIP guest by the Chinese organisers to present the Fashion Asia Award for the 'Asian Top Fashionable Tourist Attraction Of The Year'. Congratulations to all Indians as Goa was declared the winner. Awards in18 categories covering outfits, styling, photography, modelling and fashion. were given to the winners. Nominees of several countries, namely Vietnam, Thailand, India, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Philippines, Singapore, Korea, Japan, Taiwan and China participated in this gigantic fashion event (pics. on page 28 onwards). This is the beginning of a new era in the history of fashion in Asia. To commemorate the occasion and in line with our vision of going international, it was most appropriate to have Nanthawan Wannachutha, winner of Fashion Asia Award for the ‘Asian Top Fashion Model Of The Year’, by my side. Who knows? She might be the next cover girl.

and witty women, which changed the way they dressed. His influence on women’s fashion can still be felt. He was perhaps the first fashion designer who mingled comfort with fashion to enhance the beauty of the women of his era with the help of stylish clothes. According to him, “Fashion was not only to make women more beautiful, but also to reassure them and

give them confidence. It pains me physically to see a woman victimised, rendered pathetic by fashion.” As the most popular label amongst fashion forward elite women, the designer is credited for introducing tuxedos and pants for women. Earlier, it was considered a taboo if a woman wore pants and she was treated with disrespect.

The eldest child of a wealthy French industrialist, Saint Laurent started making clothes for his mother when he was still a child. After he won the prestigious first prize in the International Wool Secretariat competition, famous couturier

Christian Dior hired him. After the death of Christian Dior, Saint Laurent became the head designer of the couture house just at the age of twenty one. His famous spring 1958 collection almost saved the Dior house from financial ruin. This creation catapulted him to international stardom and was later known as the 'trapeze dress'. It included dresses with a narrow shoulder, which flared gently at the bottom. It was at this time that he shortened his surname to ‘Saint Laurent’, as the international press found his name difficult to spell. He went on to create five more collections for Dior house featuring turtlenecks and black leather jackets. However in 1960, he quit his job.

Yves Saint Laurent SS 2009

In 1962, Saint Laurent set up his own couture house and began to develop his signature look, which included the celebrated tuxedo suit ‘Le Smoking’; safari jackets for men and women; tight pants and tall thigh-high boots. He used to get inspiration from his surroundings. According to him, “Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky and in the streets. Fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live and what is happening.” Fine arts influenced him a lot. His classic day shift dress was inspired by a Dutch artist's linear paintings. His masculine shaped collections in the 80’s featured boxy jackets with the sunflowers of painter Vincent Van Gogh. Later, he also got inspired from various artists like Jean Cocteau and Henri Matisse. In 1966, Yves Saint Laurent became the first couture house to launch the modern concept of luxury women's prêt-à-porter, in a collection called ‘Rive Gauche’. In 1969, it was followed by a ‘Rive Gauche’ men's ready-to-wear line. The Yves Saint Laurent Rive Gauche boutiques were soon opened throughout the world, allowing fashion conscious working individuals to wear the extraordinary designs of this brand. This was the first major step in making luxury labels accessible to a wider section of the public. In 1996, Saint Laurent took fashion into the digital age by broadcasting his haute couture show live on the Internet.

His signature pieces, the smokings, pantsuits and safari wear have become essential in the fashion industry.

His women clothes like blazer, tuxedo, pant suit and leather jacket were inspired by male fashion.

A victim of poor health, drug abuse, depression, alcoholism and fed up by the criticisms of YSL designs, Saint Laurent closed the illustrious couture house of YSL in 2002. The androgynous look (the balancing of feminine and masculine traits in apparels), which he used again and again over the years, was also observed in the collections from design houses, such as Gucci and Prada. For him, style is an expression of individualism, mixed with charisma. Fashion is something that comes after style. Fashions fades but style is eternal.

In 1999, the Gucci Group (the luxury division of the PPR Group) acquired Yves Saint Laurent fashion house and asked fashion designer Tom Ford to design the ready-to-wear collection, while Saint Laurent started designing the haute couture collection. Since then, the brand has been repositioned at the top end of the luxury goods market. It developed the exceptional legacy of its founder, while bringing a contemporary approach to its collections, which combines elegance, top quality fabrics, refined and discreet recognisable details.

Before his death in June 2008, Saint Laurent had been awarded many notable awards including Grand officier de la Légion d'honneur by French President Nicolas Sarkozy.

Today, Yves Saint Laurent's collections include men and women ready-to-wear clothes, shoes, handbags, small leather goods, jewellery, scarves, ties and eyewear. These are designed for the modern women, who have a keen sense of freedom and follow their instincts with assurance, while captivating others with their elegance. These are created for men, who prefer a maverick look and assert the different facets of their personality in a modern way.

The Yves Saint Laurent network currently has 63 directly operated stores, including flagship stores in Paris, New York, London, Milan, Hong Kong and Tokyo. The brand is also present in the most prestigious multi-brand boutiques and department stores worldwide.

Manoviraj Khosla

He is credited for stylising the fashion for men at a time when the fashion designers in India were busy in beautifying the feminine gorgeousness (of course, there was no fashion industry like today that time and designer clothes were restricted to the premium class). Without changing the basic form of the garments, he experimented with the cuts, silhouettes and fabrics to make clothes cosier, without heavy embroidery and a complex look. After setting up his own studio in 1990, he started taking orders for couture and prĂŞt for both men and women. Clothes designed under his signature label are popular with both sexes and are retailed through several high end boutiques, not only in India but also in London, Toronto and across the Middle East. This energetic youthful creator of trendy fashion, is non other than the ace fashion designer Manoviraj Khosla, who is truly a world class Indian designer and is the hot favourite of Anup Bhandari, Chief Editor, this month. 44

The industry is on a transforming verge with the influx of fresh talent. It is good to see the newfangled designs and creativity of the budding designers and their hard work. Earlier, there were only a handful of designers in this profession. However, today it is a significantly changed scenario. The new line of designers is very original, creative and full of trendy ideas. For example, I appreciate the designers Pankaj & Nidhi, whose collection was wonderful at the recently concluded WIFW AW 2011. You will meet both talented and copycats here, but such people are found in every industry. However, the originality lives forever and not the fakes. What kind of image do you have in mind about the wearer while designing a new collection? It depends on the collection that you are designing. It can be a wedding trousseau, party wear, night wear, casuals, formals and sportswear. I do not have a pre-planned image in my mind while designing a collection.

Inder Bajwa, model and actor

How essential are inspiration and imagination for the success of a collection? What are your sources of inspiration? Very much. Without inspiration or imagination you cannot even write. There must be some happenings, which inspire you to write; which draw your attention and then only do you have a deep desire to create something from it. Similarly, we designers also perceive something from what influences and inspires us to shape our collection with creativity. It can be anything. For me, life is my best source of inspiration. Do you think that a fashion label can make anyone look smart and stylish ?

Not at all. A fashion label cannot make anyone smart and stylish unless one has an innate fashion sense. Style is definitely more important than fashion. Any garment looks stylish if you carry it in a proper manner. It does not mean that one will become stylish after buying an expensive fashion label. Nothing can make a person stylish unless he has that killer instinct, to make heads turn. Style is eternal and fashion is external.

Tell us about a fashion trend that you would like to change in menswear? I do not hesitate in saying that men are still conservative in adapting to the changes in fashion, as compared to women, who are always ready to experiment with new colours, styles and trends. I want to see men in new colours, new designs and of course, in more imaginative trendy garments. However, men’s fashion is moving slowly but surely in the right direction. A trend that changes gradually tends to stay for a longer period.

46

n

Models Trends MAY 2011

More and more fashion weeks are happening nowadays. Is this a good trend for designers or is it creating a burden on their creativity to present something out-of-thebox every time? It depends upon person to person.

More fashion weeks mean more business, more viewers and more admirers. Fashion weeks are an integral part of the fashion industry, so you cannot avoid or stop them from progressing. However, I believe in a professional approach for targeting a wider audience of fashionistas through these fashion weeks. However, I do not favour the instant mushrooming fashion events, which rise and fall everyday.

Why is designer wear still inaccessible to the masses? Is fashion limited to a certain class? Of course, I mean we designers are not a tailor or a readymade garment manufacturer, who are accessible to everyone. Designing of a garment is an art. It costs hard work, uniqueness and profundity. Such premium items are meant only for premium people, who can afford them. So anyone who is ready to pay that price can adorn designer wear. It is also a luxury that can be flaunted. What changes do you observe in Indian fashion and international fashion? Fashion in India is changing but not with the same pace as in Western and European countries. It will take time to adapt to those changing trends, but it is good that we still welcome the trends and do not follow them blindfolded. Every country has its own customs, traditions and rituals associated with fashion. We are accepting the new trends but are still attached to our traditional roots. Use of film stars on the ramp during a fashion show has been criticised by many fashion aficionados. What is your stand on this? Is a celebrity necessary to boost a designer’s creativity? According to me, it is the designer’s choice to see that who is most suitable to present his clothes. This hype might be a way to catch the media’s attention but at the end of the day, a garment is

the king on the ramp, not a celebrity. Even a good celebrity cannot highlight an imperfectly constructed garment. A well crafted collection rather adds glitter to the personality of a celeb on the ramp.

How do you see the current modelling world, especially with the inflow of many new faces? Talent in any form should be appreciated, whether it is a new collection or a new face. It is good to see new faces on the ramp every time you go to a fashion week. After creating a new collection with much toil and labour, you do wish to see an energetic fresh face wearing it. We should give chance to new faces, if he or she is talented and is capable of doing justice to our creativity. What do you look for in a model for presenting your collection? Anyone, who can carry my creativity with panache and style. As I said, it is the creativity, which works wonders, not a face. Often people in India associate a couturier with marriage dresses. What is your stand on it? Every designer has his own forte in fashion. For some, couture presents the best part of their designing and creativity but for some, it is prêt-a-porter. I prefer prêt-a-porter. Couture is meant for some special occasions, not for everyday wear. So if people like to wear custom made clothing for

special occasions, I do not think that there is anything wrong with it. Designers all over the world are practicing and following this trend, so why should not the designers in India.

What is the forte of your label and who are the targeted customers? What are your future plans for launching new labels or expanding your retail presence? Manoviraj Khosla label is trendy, sharp, youthful, hip and is available for those who want to look stylish, sexy and beyond the limit of any age boundary. It applies to every creation of mine whether it is couture, prêt-a-porter, sportswear or uniforms of corporate houses, restaurants, bars, hotels, schools, airlines etc. We are exploring new horizons for the label. Development is in progress but it is premature to disclose everything at this moment. Often you have been seen cheering the cricketers and also gave them a chance to walk the ramp for your collection. Were you interested in becoming a cricketer too? Cricket is not the only game that I like. Besides cricket, I also like soccer, formula one and other games to keep myself relaxed and energised. How would you like to be remembered in the fashion industry? Someone who believes in creating trendy, cool, sexy and young fashion!

Ekta Chowdhry Life was never the same for this ravishing beauty after winning the title of Femina Miss India Universe ‘09. She has walked the ramp for several known designers in the fashion fraternity and is a trained classical dancer too. You entered the Femina Miss India pageant almost by chance. Do you believe that everything happens in our life due to destiny alone?

I would not say that I entered the Miss India pageant by chance, for I always wanted to. However, the way it happened was something, which strengthened my belief in destiny. Yes, I do believe that there is always a plan chalked out for us by the Almighty, which unfolds slowly before us.

What do you attribute your success in the Femina Miss India pageant to? A lot of factors really, which start with the upbringing that my parents gave me from birth. I worked really hard for it, groomed myself, made a plan and stuck to it. In addition to all this, the fact that I was already modelling for some time before the pageant was also a big help.

was never there. It was great fun to live with them and despite the sense of fierce competition, we were all friends. I learnt about the whole world through the co-contestants and also about the importance of unity in diversity.

You are a well trained classical dancer. Tell us more about that side of Ekta.

I truly believe that everyone should learn some kind of an art form, be it painting, singing or dancing. I am a trained Bharatnatyam dancer and it has helped me to evolve as a better person, nourishing my body, mind and soul. Dance binds me to my roots and has enlightened me about the nuances of mythology, shlokas and culture. I realised that dance is not just about moving the body but is also about rhythm, balance and even geometry. Dance is amongst the most fulfilling things in my life!

Given a choice would you rather be a renowned classical danseuse or a Bollywood actress and why?

What did the experience of participating in the Miss Universe pageant 2009 in the Bahamas teach you? I would love to be a successful Bollywood actress but given a The experience of being a part of the Miss Universe pageant in the Bahamas was really an amazing slice of my life, which I will never ever forget. In a sense, it was the life of a princess, living along with 84 other princesses from different parts of the world, yet there was so much hard work to put in. Each contestant reflected her own culture, tradition and personality; each was a winner in her own right, so the sense of superiority or inferiority

choice, I would rather become a classical danseuse, so that I can continue being that till I die. Also, with dance I feel I can contribute a lot to the society and this world.

Yes, I do feel that I am yet to achieve a lot more as a model. Perhaps, it was because right after completing my tenure as

Miss India, I consciously took a break from the modelling world. In fact now, with my batteries charged, I am all set to make my mark and achieve my goals.

Are you spiritual by nature? What is “spirituality” to you?

To me, spirituality is more a way of life. It is about understanding who we are, where we come from and where we are headed. And very importantly, it helps us to connect with nature, which I believe is the essence of all living beings.

Who is your ultimate role model?

The most important role models for me are my parents and perhaps my every thought, word and deed is born out of the inspiration, which I get from them. I also greatly admire the painter Salvador Dali, not only for the masterpieces that he created but also for being a good human being. It is truly inspiring the way he swam against the tide and achieved not just success but also greatness, despite the world seemingly going against him.

What is the one advice you would give to aspiring Miss India contestants and models?

To be a successful model or a Miss India contestant, the first and most important thing is self-belief. If you do not believe in yourself, chances are that nobody will. Aspirants should be willing to work hard rather than look for short cuts. Know your strengths and cash in on them; go where your heart takes you. Especially for the Miss India contestants, it helps tremendously if you first get some experience of walking the ramp or facing the camera in still shoots and T.V commercials.

In recent times, the Miss India title is being viewed only as a passport to Bollywood. Are you an exception to that rule? I do not think that every Miss India has wanted to get into Bollywood; I feel it is a matter of personal choice. For those who are interested in Bollywood, a Miss India title surely does provide a good platform but then success thereafter depends on each individual’s talent and hard work. As for me, I would love to be a part of the cinema world as a whole, not just Bollywood. What is more important is to get offers, which are challenging and exciting.

How would you describe your ‘Prince Charming’?

The dreamer in me does dwell into the realm of ‘tall, dark and handsome’ but he being a ‘friend’ is very important. But then, the ‘logical’ side of me quips that ‘Prince Charming’ is a ‘myth’!

What do you think of some of these models who are using controversy and shock value to further their career?

I would say, “Whatever floats their boat”! It is after all a matter of individual choice. Personally, I would not go down that path, for I believe that anything achieved using ‘short cuts’ does not last for too long.

Look into your future and describe Ekta Chowdhry in the year 2020. I generally do not think or plan that far ahead; I like to live my life one day at a time. But then, if I do try and gaze at the crystal ball, I see myself as a mother and a dancer for sure!

How was your experience working with Anup Bhandari, Chief Editor, Models n Trends and his team?

It was a pleasure and privilege to work with Mr. Anup Bhandari and the Models n Trends team. Mr. Bhandari is a true professional and seems to have a clear vision about his publication. It was also a pleasure to be interviewed by Atul Kelkar and the fact that he has a long experience of the modelling world, which made the interview process very interesting.

Do you think that a model should have a parallel job option?

Yes, I do think that it is advisable for models to have an alternate or second career option. Equally important is that one should never compromise on education to get into the modelling world!

MAKING OF A

GOOD ACTOR

The first step towards becoming a good actor is to conduct yourself properly on the sets by following certain norms and learning basic terms and technicalities involved. Here are a few basic tips to set you on the right track...

C

ontinue playing your role till the director orders you to stop by using the word ‘cut’. In fact, continue even after that for a while and do not stop at once. If you mess up a line or forget a dialogue, still keep going with the performance till the director calls for a halt. It is possible that the director may accept this lapse and not ask for a ‘retake’. Come what may, never stop during a ‘take’ till you are seriously hurt. Put your heart and soul into the scene that you are enacting. Never look into the camera directly unless you are asked specifically to do so. It is improper to ask the director about the duration of the shot but you may inquire from the operator. Be at the proper place and concentrate on the line-up and rehearsal.

It also energises fellow actors and technicians if you make the scene lively. Your domain is between two words, ‘action’ and ‘cut’. Take the lens as a magnet and get drawn to it wherever it is. You should always motivate yourself to be on the eye line. See the camera with both eyes otherwise your face will look disfigured. Always remain on the space in front of the camera. This will give depth to your shot. Your shoulders should be angled towards the camera and never be straight. You should be seen doing something with your hands. Do not stand still in front of the camera. For a long shot, the focus is for e.g. the back of the balcony. Medium shot is intimate but theatrical. Medium close-up is the real thing. Extreme close up is known as pillow relationship. In the last shot, you must put all your energy as the concentration is on your face. While acting and speaking to other actors you will have to stand close. Whatever is happening, it is happening within the frame. The volume of your dialogue delivery should increase or decrease in proportion to the distance of the microphone.

Intensity in a scene can be shown by increasing the pace of dialogue delivery but not the volume. If the camera is moving, speak with a pace but continue moving slowly. If you are required to tone down, reduce the volume but do not slow down the gestures. Do not speak louder, if you are told to speak with an accent. Even in a studio, use a microphone, otherwise you will tend to be louder than normal. Do not try to project yourself bigger than the star or the regulars in a show. Keep harmony with others and respect your seniors. Your seniors are the ones that set the tone and mood of the programme. If you are asked to speak at a low volume then do not lose the spark or the pace. When everybody is speaking in a low volume then be careful and avoid disturbing sounds of footsteps, clattering cups, newspaper rustling and even breathing. If the scene is developing, avoid the tendency to become loud. Instead, be more intense and tone down the volume. If the scene is separated by two shots then be careful not to overlap the dialogues. Work on your looks, personality and background while playing a role. In a long shot, let the body talk. In a reaction shot, only react. Act for the camera and not for the audience. Consider the camera as your audience. Your dialogues should come naturally and your patience and understanding is the key to success. It is beneficial for you to portray different kinds of roles and not refuse a role merely because it does not suit you. Refusal of a role is considered rude and unacceptable in the industry. However, if you do have to refuse a role, then you may present your case by saying that you are occupied elsewhere and would not be able to do justice to this particular assignment. You have the making of a ‘star’, so always focus on this target.

Business cards speak volumes about who you are. Whether you are looking for a job or running a business, giving out business cards is crucial while marketing your skills or services…

ever underestimate the power of networking. The movie, Six Degrees of Separation, points out that we are six people away from knowing someone of influence. You could be six people away from knowing the President of India or your favourite movie star or someone who is in a position to hire your skills or services. Each of us knows someone, who knows someone else, who knows someone else across the board and so on. Developing this powerful networking prowess will lead to a fundamental source of continued success.

Before leaving home, your checklist should definitely include business cards. Any meeting is an opportunity to exchange the business card. A morning run or a quick trip to the market could be an opportunity to network. Business cards are internationally recognised as a means of

introduction and information exchange but in many cultures, they are also seen as a representation of the individual. It is considered courteous to provide a translation of the card information on the reverse side, in the local language e.g., Chinese, Persian etc. Make sure that the telephone numbers are arranged in the order appropriate for that country. Imbibe the following norms and give a fillip to your success ratings.

• Typically a business card includes the name of the person, the company name, a company logo and the relevant contact information (street address, postal coding, country, telephone and email address).

• Traditionally black ink is used on white card stock. The typeface should be legible and professional. The international standard for the business card size is 85.60 x 54 mm (3.370 x 2.125 inches).

• The basic etiquette rule is to present your card in the best manner in which you would present yourself.

• Always have a good supply of cards. You will be expected to present them to business contacts, sometimes more than once in the interest of good manners. Do not carry your cards loose in your pockets or allow them to become soiled. While it is acceptable for you to write on your own card, never write on

Page 56 - 57:Layout 1

5/11/2011

11:44 AM

Page 57

• When doing business in an Islamic country or a few parts of Africa and Asia, it is essentially required to always offer a business card with the right hand. The left is considered unclean.

• In Japan, presenting a card with two hands conveys respect. When using both hands, hold your card by the two upper corners.

• In Korea, while exchanging cards, nod your head as a gesture

of respect and thank the person for the meeting opportunity. Unlike other Asian countries, it is appropriate to put the card away immediately. Looking at the card for too long is regarded as ignorant and impolite.

someone else's business card unless directed to do so. It shows a lack of respect for the owner of the card. Invest in a small, discreet card case.

• Business cards should be exchanged out at the beginning of a meeting or towards the end. There are two reasons for this practice; doing it up front ensures that it won't be forgotten, and having the card in front of you will help you remember the names of the people you are meeting with and while leaving, as a reminder of your persona. During a meeting, it is customary to arrange the cards you have received on the table in front of you in the order in which the participants are seated. When the meeting ends, the cards should be transferred to a card case. • Proper business card etiquette requires that on giving your

business card, you should always get a business card from the other person. If that person forgets to do so, then ask discreetly, “How can I get in touch with you in future?” This would remind him to offer one, or he will give you some other solution. When given a business card, do not just take it and place it in your pocket. A business card is an extension of the person who gives it to you, so when you are handed one, treat it tenderly. Make the person feel important by looking at their card for a few seconds. You might see something that could be a topic of discussion. Use the opportunity to repeat loudly the person's name, especially if it is in a language you are not familiar with. You will be corrected, if your pronunciation is off the mark. This also demonstrates a sincere interest in the other person. Then place it in your business card holder. If you do not have a card case with you, put your cards in a front or side pocket.

• Make people feel important, in order to be treated in the

same manner. Take your time while handing your card to people. It is impossible to convey respect if you simply toss your card at someone. You will come across as being brash and rude.

• Never make the mistake of believing that you understand the

card etiquette in one country based on your experience in another. In Iran, for example, only senior-level individuals exchange business cards. In other Arabic nations, like Kuwait or Saudi Arabia, cards are given to everyone you meet. In Hungary, on the translated side, your surname should proceed your given name. In Spain and Turkey, the business card should be presented to the receptionist upon arrival.

• In China, it is preferable to present your card before you ask for that of the other person. The card should be presented with both hands, Chinese translation facing up, with the type toward the recipient, so that the card can be read. Bow and thank the person for the opportunity to meet him. Examine the card before putting it away.

• In India, business cards should be exchanged at the beginning of a business meeting. Take care before the meeting, to have an adequate supply of business card that will be sufficient for all those present at the meeting. Always use the right hand to give and receive business cards. • In North America and in the United Kingdom, business card

etiquette is not very rigid. Although cards should be kept clean and presentable, it is not uncommon for businessmen to carry cards loose in their pockets or to make notes on the card's back or other blank surfaces. Little, if any ceremony is attached to card exchanges. Do not feel obliged to hand out a business card to everyone you meet, as it is not expected.

Modern business is global and demands that people travel to foreign countries and mix with foreign clients, colleagues or customers. Each one of those cultures will also have their own etiquette rules. Analysing, understanding and implementing the above guidance will help you in recognising what business etiquette is and how it should be employed within the business world. Business cards play a very important role in trade. They serve as a means of introduction and as a way to ensure that your acquaintance can at a glance glean, and later refer to your professional details. Business etiquette acts as a key, as it locks the doors of poor communication and misunderstandings and opens the doors for successful business relationships.

Indeed, the crowning of Sushmita Sen as Miss Universe 1994 and Aishwarya Rai as Miss World 1994 sparked a desire in youngsters from all walks of life to come forward and take up modelling as the first step to enter the gateway of stardom. They started believing that ‘If they can

do it, why can’t we’. Parents, especially mothers of promising girls, started encouraging their daughters to pursue modelling seriously as a full time career. In this ‘Gen- X’ age, everyone desires instant results, be it fame, money, lifestyle or recognition. Through modelling, one is able to achieve a fast track access to these avenues.

Any kind of modelling is no more a taboo, as was in the recent past. Go ahead, perceive your target, plan the way to achieve it and decide where to draw the line. Nobody imposes anything on you in this profession.

Apart from print, ramp modelling, theatre, TV and films, there are several other allied opportunities, which an experienced model can pursue. One can become a shoot and model co-ordinator, photographer, hair stylist, makeup artist, show choreographer, production stylist and an event manager, without any limitations or constraints.

However, like any other profession, this too has its negative shades. It is my duty to alert you like a gardener, who warns a child about those thorns, which are attached with the rose. If he is not careful, he can hurt himself, while plucking the rose.

Now, answer these five basic questions before deciding to become a model: 1. Are you confident?

2. Look at yourself in the mirror and ask honestly whether you deserve to become a model? 3. Are you ready to shun junk food, cigarettes, alcohol and to treat your body like a temple? Modelling has a short life span. However, a model can pursue many different allied activities with the passing of age. You enter this field either as a print model (if you are not tall, but are definitely photogenic) or a ramp model or both. As you start getting experience, you can take up acting as a profession, be it in TV soaps or in films. There are so many success stories that are a source of inspiration. Aishwarya Rai, Deepika Padukone, Priyanka Chopra, Bipasha Basu and John Abraham to name a few, are raved about and command their own price.

4. Are you committed to continue with your studies, inspite of you having entered the modelling profession? 5. Are your parents ready to support you in this profession?

If the answers are positive, then you are welcome to join the clan.

In my next article, I will guide you through this journey and help you with tips that will ensure smooth sailing in this profession that promises to give you so much in a short span of time.

Makeup tips that add GLAM QUOTIENT Add glamour and shimmer to your looks by choosing the right makeup and bask in the glory of compliments showered …

n overdose of makeup not only spoils the beauty but also makes the appearance shallow. Therefore, it is vital for every woman to know about the proper makeup for various occasions. Proper practice will accentuate the features and will help in achieving a natural look. Here are a few tips to follow...

For the day look Colours

Line the eyelids with a brown or grey eye shadow. This gives a softer effect for the day. Then apply mascara to make the eyes look dark and bright, but avoid the ‘heavily made up’ look. 66

n

Models Trends MAY 2011

For lipstick, use light pastel colours in shades of mauve, brown or pink to complement the skin colour. If you have a sallow complexion, avoid orange and go for pink shades. Lip gloss by itself can be used also.

Products to use

Tinted moisturiser or foundation; translucent powder or compact powder; eye pencil, kajal, eyeliner or mascara; lipstick or lip gloss. Products with a matte or creamy finish are better during the day.

To add the glam quotient

Apply a light colour eye shadow like mauve, or light brown over the entire area. Then use dull gold or silver shadow on

Page 67

A dark complexion looks good with vibrant colours on the lips. Avoid pale colours. If the skin is fair, avoid dark shades. For normal Indian complexion, choose warm earthy colours like coral, wine, plum, strawberry, dark pink or red in different shades. One can also mix two colours to create the desired effect. Blusher colours need not match the lip colour exactly, but it should be in the same colour tone. For example, if you have worn an orange toned lipstick, avoid a pink blush on. For fair skin, try pink and red. If you have a sallow skin, avoid orange tones. For olive complexions, colours like rose, coral, russet, amber and copper are flattering, while plum, wine, bronze and burgundy suit darker complexions. Brown shadow may be applied on the lids and in the crease of the eyes. Use gold highlights.

Products to use

Moisturiser, foundation, powder, blush on, eye shadow, mascara, eye liner, pencil, kajal, lipstick or glitter in gold or silver. Gold or silver eye shadow can be used to highlight.

To add the glam quotient the upper lid (closer to the lashes) and to highlight under the brows. Match a unique and glamorous piece of jewellery like a large dramatic pendant with the outfit.

For an evening or high-tea look Colours

For the dark skin, plum, wine or burgundy lipstick colours should be chosen. For fair skin, use beige, pink or orange undertones. Dark brown or dark grey eye shadow can be applied over black eyeliner for a muted effect.

Products to use

Foundation, tinted powder matching the foundation or compact powder; blush on, eye shadow; eye liner, kajal, eye pencil or mascara and lipstick.

To add the glam quotient

Use a mauve or pink eye shadow, with silver or gold highlights. Go for the smoky eyes look. After applying eye shadow, apply eye liner close to the lashes on the upper eyelids. Smudge it with a cotton bud. Then apply a dark shadow over it and blend it outwards and slightly upwards. Now, apply the liner just below the lower lashes, smudge it and apply the eye shadow. Use gold or silver highlight under the brow bone, depending on the outfit and makeup.

For the night look Colours

While choosing the foundation for a fair ivory skin, go for beige with a rosy tint. If the complexion is fair but sallow then avoid pink tones and go for beige or biscuit ones. For a reddish complexion, a softer beige will help. Olive complexions look better with brownish beige, while for brown and dark skins, try foundation colours in natural brown tones.

Use gold foundation to add a golden glow to the skin. Then apply a golden tinted powder. This adds to the golden glow and is great for night makeup. For glamorous eye makeup, use brown, bronze or golden eye shadow. Brown eye shadow can be applied in the socket or in the crease of the lids, to add depth. Use gold highlight under the brows. You can also apply gold eye shadow to shape the eyes and along the bone line. Outline the eyes with dark eye pencil or eyeliner. Apply it on the upper lid, close to the lashes and smudge with a cotton bud. Gently blend a line of kohl or eye pencil on the lower lid. Try a touch of blusher at the outer eye, just under the eyebrow. Write to shahnaz@modelsntrends.com for all your beauty queries. Best three entries win a gift hamper each by Shahnaz.

Five Tips On Skin Care This SUMMER S

Notice the skin reaction to the sizzling atmosphere and take appropriate action to enjoy the season ummer season is generally known as the season of hot and humid weather; cool, coloured fashion and lots of seasonal fruits to soothe your taste buds. However, the season is really harsh for all types of skins. Skin rash, skin tan, blemishes and dullness caused by the scorching sun are few common problems during this time, which can spoil the fun of being out. So follow these simple steps to keep your skin glowing.

Water is the best remedy during the hot season to keep the overall body in a proper condition. It maintains an optimum level of moisture in the skin and acts as a protective barrier to enhance the appearance, especially if you are exposed to the sun or air- conditioner in the office. Water plays an important role in flushing out toxins from the body and to increase the blood flow, giving the skin a radiant look all day long. Consuming at least 2.5 litres of water every day is an inexpensive way of maintaining yourself through the scorching heat.

Reduce the consumption of alcohol, sugary food, fatty and fried snacks. Concentrate on eating more of fruits and vegetables. Avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, especially in late morning to mid-afternoon, when the sun rays are harsher on the skin. Ensure adequate sun protection with a cap, sunglasses and a good quality UV protective sunscreen lotion to safeguard the skin.

Use a mild gentle scrub to exfoliate the face and if possible, visit a salon for a facial massage. A gentle massage and scrub improves the blood flow to the facial cells. Finally, do not forget to moisturise the face as excessive cleaning dehydrates the face of essential oils. With an oily skin, this step should be avoided. Give yourself a thorough pedicure and manicure, once a month. If the hands are kept clean, then chances of bacterial or fungal growth are minimised.

Page 71

Take a bath every day and keep the perspiring areas clean and shaved. Whether the skin is normal, oily or sensitive, it is important that the pores of the skin are cleaned and the accumulated dirt is removed. Use a skin sensitive cleanser and gently cleanse the face, at least twice a day. This simple step will help the skin to remain hydrated, so that it looks and feels good.

Makeup is an integral part of getting ready for an outing, be it a professional or a social do. However, during the summer season, the skin pores are more prone to get blocked, which in turn gives a tired look. The makeup for summer should be light and rich deep colours should be avoided. Choose a natural makeup, which is waterproof.

How was the experience working with Govinda and ace director Jagmohan Mundhra in movie Naughty @ 40? It was a wonderful experience working with these veterans of the industry. Shooting with them was a joyride as well as a learning experience. How they deal with the shoot; how they explain the scene; how they dwell on a character etc., helped me a lot to perform the character fully. They are very diligent and not only narrate a scene but also enact it properly. I really learnt a lot from their experiences. Are you choosy about your role in movies or go for each and every one that is offered to you? Basically, I prefer a good script, where I have to prove my acting

talent. I do not want to be a part of a big budget star-studded movie, where I have an insignificant role. A good story and a vital character is my first priority. For the sake of money or just being a part of a big banner, I do not want to waste myself. Therefore, my philosophy is to wait and watch. As soon as I get the right script and role with a talented director, I go for it.

How is the real Yuvika? Has the stardom changed you? The real Yuvika is also very bubbly and cheerful. I do not throw tantrums. I believe in living a peaceful life and therefore keep myself away from any temptation. I follow my dreams with hard work and honesty and am a firm believer in the Almighty. I am still a down to earth girl without any starry nakhra. For my family and friends, I am not a star but only a daughter and a friend. They do not give me a starry welcome. Was it your dream to join modelling and the film industry or you wanted to do something else in your early days? I never shared my dreams with anyone because whenever I told them about my dreams, they started making fun of me. However, deep inside me, I was determined to do something different. Thus, without disclosing, I pursued my goals. I was doing fashion designing course in Delhi when offers of modelling started pouring in and then I got selected for Zee Cine Stars Ki Khoj. Now after doing many TV commercials, a serial and music video with Himesh Reshammiya; Om Shanti Om with SRK, rest is history. How do you see the current trend in the modelling world? Is there any change between your time and today’s industry? It is transforming. I think this is the golden era of the modelling industry with so much talent. Earlier, the modelling world was not buzzing but today, we have a stream of talent and fresh faces. Do you think that talking about sex and intimacy should be a taboo in the industry or publicly? Everyone has a right of freedom to speak about one’s mind. It is an individual’s choice to express one’s views publicly. However, you should be careful about others rights also. One should check that one’s feelings and expressions should not be hurt, be it any caste or creed. Sex and intimacy is thoroughly a private matter and no one has the right to disturb this privacy. Do you think that for an actress apart from luck and labour, her sex appeal also works wonders? I believe that nobody excels without labour and luck

comes afterwards. Genius is one per cent inspiration, ninety-nine per cent perspiration. It has been said since decades and is still true that there is no shortcut to success. I do not believe in overnight success. The harder you work, the luckier you get. Sex appeal can be a part of your personality or acting but merely on your sex appeal, you cannot ride over success for a long time.

What was your parents’ reaction over your decision to enter the glamour industry? My parents never stopped me to go to Mumbai or from joining this profession. They never interfere with my decision and always support me and want me to be happy in life. When I was getting modeling offers, they never asked me to reject them or to complete my fashion designing course first. They advised me to be prudent and confident in whatever I did. They have been my source of strength and will always be. I am nothing without their support and am thankful to God for having them. What is fashion and style for you? Tell us a fashion tip that you think really works Fashion is comfort for me and style is a way to express it. Unless you are comfortable with what you are wearing, talking about fashion is useless. Whatever be the label, if it does not give you comfort and cosiness, it is not worthy of putting on. According to me, follow your sense, while selecting any outfit and think whether you are comfortable wearing it amongst your family and friends or not. You will come to know about the right fashion sense. In your film career, your name has not been linked seriously to anyone in the industry. Is it a conscious decision or you have no time for gossip mongers? Love or romance is not a fashion or trend, which changes in every season. For me, love is bliss and marriage is its destination. However, I do not have the time right now to get into such a

84

n

Models Trends MAY 2011

Page 84

situation, as I have loads of work at hand. Controversies are a part and parcel of this industry and gossips beginning here end easily, if you do not allow gossip mongers to disturb your peace of mind. However, if I tread this path, it will only be with my parents’ permission and I will announce it publicly.

Besides movies, are you planning to be a part of any TV serial or reality show in the future? Movies are my priority, no matter which language and country they represent. I like good scripts, so I am even ready to switch to Hollywood. I have already worked in a TV serial, so I have no such craze for it. Reality shows are seasonal. I am busy with my upcoming movies, so I have no time to think of anything else. However, if I do receive offers for something interesting from any other medium, then I will definitely consider.

Say HELLO

To R u g g e d JEANS

D

If you want to add elegance, freshness, style and simplicity to your fashion statement, then add a pair of rugged jeans in your wardrobe to see the transformation… enim jeans are an integral part and parcel of the metro culture and fashion. Many styles of this ‘fashion attire’ have been adored and explored by men and women of all age groups, but its rugged look is more in vogue these days. The younger generation, in specific, is totally bowled over by the tattered style of these jeans.

Many garments in your wardrobe complement the rugged jeans. Be it a sweat shirt, casual shirt, polo, T shirt or even a blazer, these can be well matched with the rugged jeans for that funky and relaxed look. All you need is just a playful and experimental attitude to increase

the number of your trendy combos. To add more vibrancy, trendy accessories like shining studs, casual bag, big dialled watch, cotton belt and canvas sneakers can also be included. Body piercing and tattoos also do help in enhancing this striking fashion.

The best part is that this look can be created by ripping an old pair of jeans. The jeans can be ripped around the thighs, knees and the calf areas. The style is all about attitude and how well you can carry the look. Though blue looks cool, yet black, grey, indigo and sky coloured ripped jeans also look hot. For the retro fashion or a street look, keep an unkempt hairstyle and even an unshaven look. However, keep the overall look simple without any flashy or loud colours.

“Youngsters and jeans are synonymous to each other. This wonderful garment ”

is really a miracle in fashion and is a style icon in itself. A ripped denim jeans presents the freedom and care-a-damn attitude of youngsters. Fashion knows no boundary so why should you? Go, experiment, and stand out.

Nitin Bal Chauhan, fashion designer

Make jeans rugged at home Even though rugged jeans are available in the market, yet you can try your hand for making a trendy pair at home by following these simple tips: • Initially try this process on a discarded pair of jeans, till you are satisfied that the jeans have been properly ripped. • Always choose long length jeans to rip. Courtesy: Pepe Jeans London

• Mark the desired area of your jeans with a chalk and cut them with scissors.

Courtesy: Pepe Jeans London

• Knees, pockets or the end of jeans are the common areas, where the jeans can be ripped. You can also experiment on other areas also. • Shredded threads at the edges of the jeans look best for such a look. With a needle or scissors, you can get that look. • Bleach the jeans or rub it with sandpaper to create that faded look.

“Torn jeans have been the youngsters’ favourite since decades and not only in recent

years. Actually, the beauty of jeans lies in its style, fitting and of course colours. The more you wash these, the better they become fashion wise. You can pair these with any garment to create your own fashion statement. Since youngsters love to experiment and prefer casual looks, so rugged jeans are more popular amongst them.

2 1. Gold, the new jewel

Recently, this precious commodity was extensively presented at Vicenza Fair in Italy as the ‘jewel’, which elevates a piece of gold to iconic status. The incorporation of gold into wood or ceramic pieces, especially by designers Micheletto and Vendorafa was very appealing and modern. A gold chain nestled amongst silver was shown by brand Superoro, which was bold and bright. Presentation of gold in this manner raises a fashion piece to a higher level, adding an edge to the extraordinary heritage of gold.

2. Precious and delicate

The preciousness of gold also found expression at this fair in beautiful pieces, which were delicate and desirable. High carat, elegant and classic slim chains were shown while Nanis’s “Petites” collection presented tiny gold charms. Expert craftsmanship at this fair showed how gold electroforming has been taken to a new level. Designers, including Tre Spighe and Graziella exhibited bracelets, necklaces, earrings and rings, which demonstrated a high level of detail in gold jewellery, which could earlier only be hand carved. Delicate, spidery, skeletal structures weaved through designs expressed the beauty of this next level gold jewellery.

4. Texture and colour

Hammered, diamond-cut and silk finish created texture and interest were often combined in a single piece giving it a beautiful effect. Yellow gold, white gold and rose gold were combined in opulent pieces by designers, including Damiani.

The increased versatility in many gold pieces was a result of high levels of expertise. On display were pieces of unique reversible designs with attachments added to give a width wise or lengthwise outlook. The marriage mantra... LIFE PARTNER as BUSINESS PARTNER

W

Change is the only thing, which is constant. This fact is evident in the social norms of today’s urban world, especially in the institution of marriage…

n

Atul Kelkar 94

e, as a society, have supposedly matured. Divorce is no longer a four letter word. Social liberators are all round us to help us in believing that a bad marriage can and should be treated like a bad meal at the corner’s Chinese restaurant. All you need to do is perhaps throw up, curse the owner, meet your physician, pop a few tablets and never step into that place again. However, is this what we really wanted when we took our marriage vows?

Models Trends MAY 2011

The fundamental cause of the most unsuccessful marriages is our perception of marriage. Our childhood fantasies of that proverbial ‘knight in shining armour’ and ‘magical potions’ have not really left us, when we are faced with that all important, albeit rhetorical question, “Will you marry me?” You say ‘yes’ and in India, soon the family takes over. A few million spent on functions, which you felt were a torture and soon you find yourself at your honeymoon celebration. It is at this stage that the ‘morning after syndrome’ eyeballs you.

Page 94 - 96:Layout 1

5/11/2011

1:20 PM

Page 95

Most of us have this notion that we start a completely new life after marriage. We believe that the day we get married, everything is going to change – our nature, our desires, our behaviour and perhaps even the environment. Will the sun rise from the west? The morning after the bride wakes up and looks at her spouse, she almost hopes to see a halo around his head. However, what she sees and experiences instead is sleepy hung-over eyes, stubble, bad breath and the fact that her bridegroom needs to trim the hair of his nose. In panic, she runs into the bathroom and when she looks at herself in the mirror, she almost dies of shock. Well, let us not be prudish and believe that the wedding night is necessarily everyone’s ‘first’ time. For the sexually liberated couples, the shock is even greater, for their syndrome starts the wedding night itself, for they thought that this night was supposed to be a romantic affair. For him, it is business as usual. He performs, rolls over and runs to the bathroom to return yawning aloud. As for her, she is already feeling depressed that sex was not half as good as the first time they did it!

The next couple of years pass in a hurry trying to compare the marital dreams with the harsh realities of life. Both are

quick to blame each other for every little thing possible, since they are unable to pinpoint the real cause of their frustrations and disappointments, which we generically call ‘unhappiness’. It is basically our inability to accept change.

Love is an emotion. It is an expression of our mental and psychological wellness, what is generally known as ‘happiness’. The cause of this wellness is attributed to some person or persons, whom we believe that we love. After marriage, a combination of commitment, dependence and trust gives us this mental wellness, so love gets expressed through these three things. If we truly believe in this, we would never find love missing in our marital lives. A couple of years down, unknown to us, the ‘seven year itch’ syndrome starts setting in. We are often unable to accept our own feelings of boredom and predictability in a relationship, which is often accelerated by the possessiveness, born out of insecurities. Unlike what most would believe, sex is likely to be only a small part of these new needs of ours, causing this syndrome. We need a different environment, people, activities, topics and maybe even different problems to put our heads to.

The seven year itch, makes life a bitch!

The reason that this does not hit couples during even long courtship periods can be expressed in one word, ‘insecurity’. Marriage seems to suddenly give us solid security and our true emotion starts flowing unhindered. This is why couples start accusing each other that they have changed. The fact is that ‘this’ is our real self, and what we experienced of each other before marriage was a brilliant acting performance. So does this mean that marriages can never work? Of course they can, provided we change our perspective of marriage. Marriage is actually born out of our instincts of procreation and self-preservation. As age advances, our ability to take risks normally starts diminishing. ‘Security’ becomes the key word, social or financial. So two persons decide to get together and offer each other precisely that. Therefore, marriage is essentially about ‘responsibility’.

and responsibilities. There would be certain decisions, which can be taken independently; some would require taking the opinion of the other, however, others would require a complete agreement of both.

Now comes the shocking part. A very essential part of any business agreement is the spelling out of the terms of disassociation. One need not fear this clause at all, for it does not necessarily lead to breaking up of the relationship. In fact, it cements the relationship even further. This is simply because both will realise the fact that their wealth together will always be much more than each one’s share, if separated.

It may sound pretty unromantic, but ‘marriage is indeed a business!’

One needs to look at a life partner as a business partner. Ideally, look for a spouse who has the same goals, objectives, ethical and moral values that you have. You cannot imagine a smuggler getting into a business partnership with a priest, can you? The next stage would be to do an unbiased character analysis and background check of your prospective partner. All this, typically should happen in the early stages of the relationship. However, these stages are often skipped in most love marriages, which make them the most hazardous.

Love indeed is blind!

At the risk of again sounding unromantic, the next step would be to draft the ‘objectives’ clause of the memorandum of understanding of the ‘life together’ business. Issues like what professions each would like to pursue; the number of children they would like to have; the lifestyle each one aspires for; post marital responsibilities to each ones parents and relatives, etc. should all be discussed freely and frankly. Even one crucial aspect, where either is likely to take a position of unacceptability, is a reason enough to not go ahead with this ‘life together’ business venture. One of the most critical points in the planning of any business venture is the accurate forecasting of the business cycles, which the particular business is likely to go through. This applies very beautifully in the case of marriage as well. Very often, in a relationship, both partners may not be at the same stage of their relationship cycle. One might be at the ‘infatuation’ or ‘love’ stage while the other may have jumped ahead and reached the ‘marriage’ stage. Typically, the old villain ‘Mr. Insecurity’ steps in and they get married. Imagine a case where one business partner wants to start with one small shop while the other is all ready to float a public company and have a chain of stores around the country. Either their partnership will break, or more likely, the entire business venture will crumble. Now that both partners have got convinced about their compatibility, as well as the common goals, they need to plan out the organisation chart, which spells out their authority 96

n

Models Trends MAY 2011

With the modalities in place, the couple would be truly ready to start their business venture called ‘marriage’. As in any business, its success depends on the normal business tenets like planning, forecasting, teamwork, communication, performance evaluation, reorganising, re-strategising, crisis handling and astute distribution and reinvestment of profits. At the end of each year, it is essential that both know exactly how they fared financially and they must together draw up a strategy for meeting shortfalls, if any. Typically, men would need to swallow their ego and pride while doing this, while women would need to show more acceptance and understanding of the fluctuating fortunes. On the emotional front, with a constant communication link, the couple would be able to foresee problems in the relationship and take timely remedial measures. At each stage, they would together understand the changing needs of one another and work out the golden median. Possessiveness would be controlled within healthy limits. Uncertainty would almost entirely be eliminated, so the feeling of security is maintained steadfastly. Since the do’s and don’ts have been clearly spelt out, and completely accepted by both, there would never be a reason to cheat or do things on the sly. This also eliminates the need for either to find someone else’s shoulder to cry on. Inspite of all these things, each one would have enough breathing space. Such a couple would have found their elixir of happiness and live together as friends forever.

Sunglasses, as a core fashion accessory for every funky fashion aficionado, not only forms a part of the style statement but also protects the eyes from the harmful UV rays of the sun. So pick up the best one that matches your face and personality…

Page 98

T

hese come in different sizes, shapes and colours, but the only purpose is to protect your eyes from the sun. However, nowadays sunglasses are an epitome of style. Wear classic, sophisticated sunglasses with any casual or formal dress and get that oh là là look from admirers. However, no matter how costly the shades, they must suit the face profile, otherwise be prepared to be pooh- poohed.

Choose the right one Round face

A round shaped face is rather full and does not have well defined jaw and cheek bones. Do not select a round frame for a round face. Instead, choose a rectangular or square frame. Your sunglasses must be aimed to make your face look slim and long.

While shopping for the sunglasses, most people go for the brand and not the suitable shape. Generally, aviators are the safest bet. They complement any outfit and never go out of fashion. However, the size of sunglasses needs to be in proportion with the face size and this will enhance your overall personality. People with large faces need to choose a large sized pair and people with a small face should choose a small sized pair. However, a large selection is available for different types of face structures. Go ahead, make the right choice.

Square face

A square shaped face is characterised by a broad forehead, wide cheekbones and a wide chin or jaw line. So get an appearance of a lengthy face by choosing sunglasses with an oval or round frame. It will contrast well with your face shape.

Diamond face

A diamond shaped face has wide or high cheekbones with a narrow forehead and chin. Select a pair, which highlights the forehead and jaw line. Oval sunglasses will alleviate the curve of the face, although softly curved square frames will work as well. Make sure that the sunglasses are no wider than the top of the cheekbones.

Heart face

A heart shaped face is identified by high cheekbones, a wide forehead and a narrow chin or jaw. Cat eyes sunglasses and light coloured or rimless frames with low temples are an excellent choice, as these highlight the eye area and lessen the lower portion of the face.

Oval face

This type of face has narrow chin and high cheek bones. An oval face is considered to be a universal shape. Therefore, oval faced people have lots of options. Although, almost all shapes suit them but the square shaped frame with higher temples and rounded edges suit them much better.

“While shopping for sunglasses, ensure that they provide protection against UVA and UVB rays. Glares, which do not provide

protection against the ultraviolet rays of the sun, will be harmful in the long run. So invest wisely and opt for branded sunglasses rather than the fakes, available at roadside vendors. Aviator sunglasses are good for officials, bikers and college going guys. If you are a sportsman, then wrap around sunglasses are the best for you. These days, shades in gradual colours of blue, olive green, pink, red, grey, brown and maroon are popular. If you are unable to make a suitable choice according to your face shapes, then go for rimless or Aviator sunglasses, since they look suitable on all types of faces. Also, try and match the colour of the frame with the colour of your hair. Ensure that the frame does not end up covering your eyebrows. Ketan Parikh, MD, Sterling Meta-Plast India Private Limited

In India, dark sunglasses are referred to as ‘glares’ and the light ones are called ‘coolers’. The shortened form of sun spectacles is ‘sunspecs’. Sun shading eyewear is also referred to as ‘sun shades’ or ‘shades’. Darkened eyewear, which are worn by blind people, are referred to as ‘smoked spectacles’. Sunglasses with large lenses are usually referred to as ‘solar shields’.

This season, lots of options and looks are available for the modern women to choose from. However, whatever you choose, but do modify it to suit your own style. Here are a few tips to make you look more ravishing...

1. This season, colour blocking is

trendy, which means using two or more blocks of colours in a dress. Choose fresh colours to put on during the day. Team up pieces from your wardrobe and colour block them. Select colours from either end of the spectrum and team them. For example, sky blue with navy or azure.

2 1

2. Choose a combination you have

never tried before. For example, pair a sleeveless jacket with shorts or wear a skirt over a bodysuit. It is a popular trend for this season. You can also combine a bodysuit with trousers.

3

3. Using motifs on garments is lots

of fun and is very trendy this season. Little hearts, bows and frills can add a new dimension to a garment. A dress with little heart motifs all over can even make a simple dress look more smart.

4

6

4. The partygoers can also pick something saucy from the trends this season. Layer a bustier with a sheer top and team it with a hot pink trouser. You can also choose a colour blocked dress with heavy embroidered ruffles.

Team up a structured jacket with a contrast coloured skirt. Those who are more daring can team up a structured jacket with a sheer skirt or trousers. Try light pink with deep purple or white with mint.

6. Another look, which you can go

for is exaggerated accessorising. Pick a simple jacket dress and accessorise it with an oversized bow. Try a colour blocked jacket with straight leg trousers.

hese romantic pairs have always managed to create a magic in the hearts of lovers. However, in real life, these contemporary ‘love birds’ created news not so much for their romantic affairs but more so for their breakups and aftermath.

While the Shahrukh Khan - Kajol jodi is the most talked about in the B town, pair of contemporary stars Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif have also carved a niche for themselves on screen. Every film, which features this striking pair, does well at the box office, inspite of the fact that it does not have a good storyline to match. Although Akshay a.k.a. ‘Mr. Khiladi’ is now married to Twinkle, but once he was known to be a philanderer in the industry. Knowing his past escapades with many actresses, his wife is wary of his pairing with this sensuous lass, inspite of the success rating of their films. She is always warning him to stay away from Ms. Kat as she fears that her Akki might not be stolen in front of her very eyes. Akshay even does not want to upset his married life after being the father of a son. Thus, he has decided to promote other actresses also. Does it matter to Katrina anymore, who is now

a shining star and is no longer dependent on Akki for her success?

Shahid and Kareena: Handsome

Shahid and sexy Kareena were bitten by the love bug during their movie Fida. Lucky for each other, their hot pairing on screen brought fortune to the producers and directors in the form of many blockbusters. However, as destiny would have it that after dating for three years, the couple decided to say ‘goodbye’ to each other, during the filming of super hit movie Jab We Met. Only Kareena and Shahid know what really happened to tear them apart but now both have found a shoulder to console upon. Kareena is now dating veteran married actor Saif Ali Khan and Shahid has roped in Priyanka Chopra.

Shahrukh and Kajol: Shahrukh

Khan and Kajol are the only lovebird duo, who have clicked with the masses in the true sense. Their chemistry and romance has always managed to leave an indelible impact in the mind and hearts of the audience, be it Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham or the recent movie My Name is Khan. Not only this, they are the first couple on screen, who even after getting married, have been successful in creating ripples on the silver screen. The couple has acted in a number of romantic movies, but one thing that makes them even more special is that they have never been linked together in any gossip or controversy. Infact, Shahrukh Khan is fond of Kajol in a very special way as he admitted during the rushes of Baazigar, when he said that “he could not take his eyes off Kajol.” He was even jealous and upset when she announced her comeback with Aamir Khan in movie Fanaa, instead of doing a film with him. No doubt, they share a different and beautiful bond but then, why doesn’t hubby Ajay Devgan like his better half pairing with SRK. God can only tell or can Ajay! The charming duo made a debut in the industry with great pomp and show and was projected as a truly ‘made for each other’ couple. Their dating and romance interludes were once the engrossing scoops of many films and lifestyle magazines. To encash this talk of the town jodi, Yash Raj Films had even launched them in Bachna Ae Haseeno, which received rave reviews. However, soon the leggy lass Deepika shelved Ranbir after the candid confession of his betrayal during Koffee With Karan. Now Sidhartha Mallya, son of liquor baron Vijay Mallya, is the new ‘love interest’ of Deepika. However, the charming Kapoor was reportedly spotted in front of Deepika’s building on several occasions to rekindle the lost love.

His ‘love and hate’ relationship with former Miss World and renowned married actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is still the hot favourite of gossip mongers. They fell in love during the shooting of blockbuster movie Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, but later, due to serious misunderstandings, they fell apart. However, unlike other relationships, theirs did not pass away quietly but was full of hullabaloos. Salman’s harassing behaviour and excessive dominance even forced Aish to take the protection of both the police and private security guards, who used to accompany her during her shooting. “The Salman Khan chapter was a nightmare in my life and I am thankful to God that it is over,” this statement of Aish justifies the tragic end of this beautiful love story. At last, Aish married Abhishek Bachchan but Sallu bahi is still living the life of a bachelor, after the recent break up with girlfriend Katrina Kaif.

At last, director Anees Bazmee has discovered the formula to make a film in the form of comedy of errors, mingled in family drama. This time, he is betting heavily on Salman Khan and Asin, who are in the lead with Paresh Rawal, Arya Babbar and Mahesh Manjrekar in supporting roles. The film is a remake of the 2008’s Telugu film by the same name. A tale of matrimonial mishmash, the film is all about love at first sight amidst various conspiracies of two families to teach each other a lesson. The Telugu version was one of the biggest grossers in the USA. It was also a very big hit in Andhra Pradesh and remains as one of the most popular films in Telugu Cinema. How it will perform here, is yet to be seen. Why watch: For a rib tickling entertainment.

X-Men First Class

Kung Fu Panda 2

The lovable, innocent but determined Po is back with this animated adventure of DreamWorks Animation studio. Director Jennifer Yuh Nelson presents the aftermath of becoming the ‘Dragon Warrior’ and how his new life of awesomeness is threatened by the emergence of a formidable villain. It is a challenge for Po to stop a weapon that can even end kung fu art and how he succeeds; this is really interesting to watch. The voices of Jack Black, Angelina Jolie, Dustin Hoffman, Jackie Chan, Seth Rogen, Lucy Liu, and Michelle Yeoh make the characters of this movie really remarkable. Why watch: For Po and his new adventure.

Murder 2

This suspense thriller of Vishesh Films is directed by young Mohit Suri, who has already given few blockbusters under the same banner. Sri Lankan beauty Jacqueline Fernandez is roped in to replace sizzling actress Mallika Sherawat for this sequel of Murder. Jacqueline will be seen in a sensuous avatar on screen with her bold love making scenes. According to Mohit, “This is a film for a mature audience and revolves around the world of prostitutes, pimps and gigolos.” Why watch: Wow! An adult delight.

Love U... Mr. Kalakaar!

Rajshri Productions is again ready to give the audience a dose of romance, dipped in family values. The film revolves around the love story of a cartoonist and a management trainee; their unlikely match and how their worlds connect. Amrita Rao is performing the role of a management trainee, who is in love with an artist, played by Tusshar Kapoor. This modern, effervescent love story is directed by debutant S. Manasvi, who has also written the story, screenplay and dialogue. The movie is produce by the Barjatya brothers. Why watch: You decide yourself.

This action adventure of director Matthew Vaughn narrates the epic beginning of the X-Men saga and reveals a secret history of the main protagonists of the first three movies. The backdrop of the movie is set during the 1960’s when John F. Kennedy was the president of the United States and the socio-political upheaval, the cold war and the birth of the civil rights movement was at full swing. The star cast of this prequel includes James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Rose Byrne, January Jones and Kevin Bacon. Why watch: For breathtaking gravity defying actions of superheroes.

Super 8

Iconic personalities of Hollywood, J.J. Abrams and Steven Spielberg have joined hands to create this thriller for the adventure loving audience. A group of six young children witness a train accident and capture it in their camera. Shortly after, unusual disappearances and inexplicable events begin to take place in their town, which leads to more terrifying happenings. Starring Kyle Chandler, Elle Fanning, Joel Courtney, Gabriel Basso, Noah Emmerich and Ron Eldard, this movie with director and screen writer J J Abrams and producer Steven Spielberg is full of nail biting sequences. Why watch: Of course, for the unique combination of J.J Abrams and Steven Spielberg.
