THROUGH THE EYES

ndia is today progressing to become the most happening hub in the fashion world. The contribution of the apex body, Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI), through its president Sunil Sethi is commendable as it continues to promote Indian fashion globally, year after year, through its many fashion bonanzas, the pioneer one being ‘Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week’. Every edition of this mega event showcases the extraordinary talent of the Indian designers and their creative brilliance. This time ‘Wills India Fashion Week Spring Summer 2011’, moved in the right direction and selected a larger venue at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi. However, seeing the interest generated over years and a quantum jump in the increase of fashion aficionados, it has become necessary now to substantially increase the seating capacity of the main show area.

In accordance with the vision of ModelsnTrends, it has been decided to further promote talent in the industry with the latest ground level activity ‘ModelsnTrends Night ’ at Three Stories, East of Kailash, New Delhi. This event will happen every Saturday, where an eminent jury of ModelsnTrends will select one promising face each week in the male and female category, who will be launched on the web portal www.modelsntrends.com. The winner of the month will be awarded a free portfolio shoot from a renowned fashion photographer and would also appear in the magazine as the ‘Top Model’ subsequently. Not only will these faces be noticed by the entire fashion and glamour industry but will also be positively selected for various assignments. So don’t miss this chance to be a shining star in the days to come. Not only this, we are also planning to provide new and better avenues for the model fraternity soon. A grooming academy and holding of an international beauty pageant is already on the horizon. Recently I got a chance to travel to Singapore. Apart from the scenic beauty and different types of cuisine, I liked the cleanliness regime of this well organised tourist destination. Personal and environmental hygiene commands top priority here. The country is even known for its tough penalties on littering, chewing gum and spitting in public places. It is time that we, the second largest populated country, should learn the significance of cleanliness from this small country. This month, gorgeous, glamorous and enticing Sayali Bhagat is on the cover. She has done fabulous work in South Indian and Bollywood movies. Currently, she is riding high on the success wave and has signed many more Bollywood movies. Her spellbinding looks, panache and charm perfectly ooze her oomph. Thanks Sayali for being by my side and spreading your warmth. Well it is time to go dahlings, but do take care and keep tucked during the chilly days ahead. Keep in vogue by choosing elegant styles from ‘Add oomph to your winter wardrobe’ at page 26 by our expert stylist Kanika Jain. Wish you a happy, successful and prosperous New Year.

1. The shawl style scarves present femininity and elegance of a woman. These scarves can be easily transformed with many patterns. You can either simply wear it around your neck or cross it in the front. A unique pin adds more charm. The scarf matches perfectly with a skirt.

2. The slim long scarves are one of the most traditional styles. There are numerous ways to wear these scarves with the necktie knot being a favourite choice. You can even casually wrap them around your neck for that great look. Try light and deep colours to look stunning.

2

1

Every fashionable woman is eager to learn how to wear the scarf correctly. There is no set standard of selecting or wearing a fashion scarf. It all depends on the dress it is being matched with; the occasion, scarf texture and shape. Basically, one should know how to fold the scarf and tie some basic knots. Experiment with the folds and knots until a perfect match is attained. 3. The long size scarf looks beautiful with a sweater. These scarves are the hot favourites of Europeans, who love to wear them around their neck, layer upon layer. However, do not wear these scarves with fur coats or sweaters with complex patterns, as you would look weirdly dressed. 4.

3

Square scarves come in two sizes, big and small. These can be worn on the head or as a down triangle. Square scarves are popular amongst women and even men feel comfortable wearing these.

he classy fashion is represented in the fashion market by the Boss and Hugo brands. These brands and their fashion lines have been constantly constructing a world of extraordinary fashion, while maintaining a high level of quality.

The making

Hugo Boss Bag

Way back in 1923, after the end of the First World War, when Germany was in a state of economic ruin, the founder of the brand, designer Hugo Boss started a clothing factory in Metzingen to manufacture clothes for workers. Soon Hugo joined the Nazi party and started manufacturing Nazi uniforms.

After his death, the factory started making uniforms for postal and police workers. It produced its first men suits in1950, but did not focus exclusively on men's fashion until the early 1970’s. The

successive launch of men’s fashion made the label synonym to high end suits for men. Later, the popularity of these suits amongst Hollywood celebrities and business bigwigs helped the label to grow at a rapid pace.

The labels

Hugo Boss company went public in 1985 and is now part of the Marzotto Group, an Italian luxury conglomerate controlled by the Marzotto family. However, no member of the Boss family is part of this company now.

Sensing the high demand for luxury goods, Hugo Boss launched its first fragrance in 1993 and created a division, which has since grown to be an important part of the company. In 1999, Boss Orange for men was launched and was branded as sporty and casual, which demarcated it from the trendy Hugo brand and the sophisticated Boss Black brand. To cater to active lifestyle, an

The chic brand spells sophistication and offers top quality in terms of an experience. What I really find interesting in the brand’s outlook is the positioning of its various sub brands to cater to a very large spectrum of consumers. I find the brand to be an all pervasive for the chic understated segment. I personally like the essence the brand stands for. I find it young as well as the one, which has depth.

Considering the wide range of the products of this luxury brand, I believe that they surely make a complete style statement for class conscious fashionable men and women. So with such a huge variety contained in a label, you need not go anywhere else for your needs. It is a one-stop shop that promises to make you dazzle and feel complete in trendy fashion.

Since 2004, ‘Baldessarini’ is an independent business unit, which focuses more on the prestigious image than does its two sister brands, Boss and Hugo. It sells clothing, shoes, fragrances and accessories, like the other Hugo Boss brands. In July 2005, Hugo Boss further expanded into womenswear with Boss Orange. Boss Kidswear is an extension of the label’s activities, which produces sport classic looks mixed with suit jackets, modest dresses, and luxury materials that are appropriate for selected social events. These products are available throughout the world at more than 6,100 retail stores.

exclusive brand, Boss Green was launched with a sporty look. In 2000, the chairman of the company, Werner Baldessarini brought out a womenswear line ‘Baldessarini’, which has been very successful.

Highlighting the appeal and acceptance of the Group’s brands, the company also associates with high profile fashion events in the world’s fashion capitals.

The look

The unisex collections of all its labels offer a versatile fashion range with a rich array of elegant ‘modern classics’ in every facet of contemporary lifestyle. The perfect designs, colours and silhouettes of these collections satisfy the most demanding tastes and accentuate the wearer’s personality.

Boss Orange watch

The interplay of sophisticated designs, exclusive materials and immaculate tailoring guarantees clothing of the highest standard for customers of distinction. Its leisurewear is perfect for those men and women, who enjoy dressing in a sporty style. Unconventional materials mix a playful approach with proportions, contrasting colours and patterns that appeal to the savvy clientele. Not only this, these lines successfully bridge the gap between fashionable sports apparel and sportswear fashion, while highlighting avant-garde looks, which are progressive yet never overstated. The perfumes by these labels also emphasise the elegant uniqueness and fine image of an individual. Thus, by offering trendsetting designs and superior quality products, the brand satisfies the high expectation of its fashion conscious customers.

World Class Indian Designer

Designer Varun Bahl is one of the young couturists of India, who is famous for his excellence in blending two different cultures in a splendid way. His creativity, use of exclusive luxury fabrics and appealing hand embroidery always result in perfect quality. His creations reflect a distinct gamut of designs, mixing vintage and antique looks with the new and contemporary lines, resulting in a very chic and fresh look. The focus of his collection is primarily on surface ornamentation, simple and clean silhouettes and a fusion of techniques. It means that one may find block printing, appliquĂŠ and embroidery on an outfit, which is crafted from fabrics with different textures. As a result, Varun is rapidly making a mark not only on the national front but also in the international fashion world. No wonder then that this dynamic personality is the hot favourite of Anup Bhandari, Chief Editor, this month.

Was designing always on your cards or happened by chance? What was your vision while entering into the fashion industry? Designing has always been my passion and it is the best way to pour out my creativity. It is the mind’s vision, which comes out as an imagination and inspiration. Glamour is only one aspect but there is a second angle to it, which is continuous hard work over years. A designer eats and dreams his collections and it takes a lot of hard work and thought process.

When did you decide that you should launch your own label? What was your inspiration behind this? As I said, designing had always been on my cards and I have worked really hard towards this. Similarly, launching my own label was always a dream for me. The inspiration behind this label was to set new standards for high fashion in India and to some extent, I have been able to achieve this goal.

Varun is a close friend of mine. We share a common aesthetic and fashion sensibility, and that's the reason we came together. We have a certain synergy in the way we think about clothes and fashion. He is always more subtle in designing. Karan Johar, Bollywood producer and director.

What is the forte of your label? The forte of my label is the use of exclusive high quality fabrics and the subtle but beautiful hand embroidery. We also give new dimensions to our designs and the silhouette.

What sea changes have you noticed in today’s fashion?

The most important change in our fashion is that we are progressing onto new standards. We are becoming global day by day and it is getting accepted all over. The inter-mingling of different cultures marks a unique way to experiment more on new grounds.

Well, there is no fixed rule that a designer likes only Indian wear or western wear. It is just a way to put things together. As far as my designs are concerned, they are an apt combination of both Indian and western touch. So, combining them both becomes more challenging and that gives a third dimension to my designs. I am not an expert, yet I loved his sense of style. The amount of hard work he has put into his collection is visible from the cuts, finishing and the detailing of garments. Prahlad Kakkar, ad filmmaker.

How essential are inspiration, imagination and creativity for the success of a collection? What are your sources of inspiration?

A collection is a well thought outcome. There is a lot of mind’s play behind this. For a design to be well made, it is extremely important to first foresee how it will look. Imagination gives a fillip and it is the creative effort that churns out an utterly gorgeous design.

Is there any restriction or regulation in designing too? I do not think so. There are no fixed boundaries to this, and anything, anytime can inspire, be it a natural object or an abstract piece. The Important part here is how one presents it.

More and more fashion weeks are happening nowadays. Is this trend good for designers or creating a burden on their creativity to present something new every time? Well it is good to have a platform and there is nothing wrong in having many shows because it paves the way for discovering new talent. The only check we have to keep in mind is whether these fashion weeks fulfil the set standards or not.

What according to you is ‘Haute Couture’ as the definition is getting quite confusing nowadays?

Haute couture or high fashion is the creation of an exclusive fashion, which is luxurious and implies excellent artistry with the latest novel fabrics and expensive skills.

How do you see the future of couture fashion in India? According to me, the future of couture is extremely bright and it has the maximum acceptance today. In our country, couture is becoming more experimental even though it has its roots deep down in our culture and tradition. Certainly, it is going onto a new level gradually.

Nowadays, presence of a celebrity on the ramp has become a trend. Is a celebrity really necessary to boost a designer’s creativity?

His collection is outstanding. He is an unusual young man, so young and so creative. His show is brilliant.

Ritesh Deshmukh, actor.

Recently, the media has emerged with this question that how a celebrity becomes important on the ramp. According to me, it has to be the clothes, which should steal the show and not the celebrity. Actually it is the audience and media that get distracted and their whole attention shifts from clothes to the celebrity.

How do you see this trend?

I personally believe that clothes should be the star of the show. In my case, they definitely are. After all, we designers put in so much hard work into our collection and these should get all the attention. Though, the other part of the story is that we see a lot of Bollywood and fashion together. It is the glamour factor, which is attached irresistibly, both in the fashion field and the film industry. So, to some extent, we are two sides of the same coin.

How are you planning to enhance the reach of your label on the retail front? What are your plans about store launch on national and international level?

WIFW SS ‘10

I already have stores all across the country and I do have a dedicated European clientele. I am also looking forward to opening my own showrooms at various places, not only in India but also outside the country. And I hope that soon my own stand-alone stores would be not only in Delhi and Mumbai but also in all the other metros.

today the percentage of youngsters is higher in this industry? The industry is more modern and has an extensive exposure. The platform is wider and the percentage is higher because now the exposure is much more than before. Due to the multiplicity of channels and the active Internet media, more youngsters are driven to the glamour world. The scope too has increased manifolds. Do you think a parallel career option is necessary for models? Not really. You need to have the sustaining power and should not divert because on being a successful model, you do migrate to various allied glamour fields and films. How

has been your experience with the industry and its people to date? Well, it is a mixed one, but more on the better side. Initially, I was not aware about the tactics. Now things are fine and rocking. The industry is vast and people are seriously working towards achieving their goals. It is a dream factory. What is the role of publicity in a celebrity’s life? First of all, it is important to be talented and to get a good break. Publicity takes you ahead and keeps you alive in the limelight. It is definitely an important aspect in the making of a star.

Page 44 - 47:Layout 1

12/7/2010

How do you cope up with the controversies of the glamour industry? Initially, I used to get disturbed but now after spending time in the film industry, I am fine with it. Controversies do shock you and if you go to clear them up, they spread further. The best way is to keep your head cool. What is your stress buster and how do you relax? I read and watch a movie.

Which actress is your role model and why? Madhubala. She was the icon of beauty, talent and versatility.

Do you think that an actress has some responsibility towards the society? Of course, yes. Once you become a recognised model or actress, you do not live a personal life to the fullest. You have a serious responsibility towards the society.

You are more busy in South Indian movies and international movies. What about your Bollywood project? Do you prefer to act in South Indian movies or in Bollywood movies? I prefer to do good movies, be it in Bollywood or South Indian movies. I am here to portray my talent in movies, irrespective of their languages and borders.

What do you think is the prime difference between the cultures of Bollywood and Tollywood? Keeping in view the process, both the industries have same operations. However, I feel that Tollywood is more organised.

Tell us about your upcoming movies and your roles. Presently I am working in many Bollywood projects, such as Shoonya, which is a complete thriller; Shout is a horror thriller

and Impatient Vivek is a hilarious comedy. Then Tinnu Verma's Weekend is an action thriller; Today’s Lines is a social film and Big Pictures film Chaloo Movies is a comedy. I wish to work in movies of all languages.

Our Bollywood movies revolve around love and romance. What is the value of romance in your life? Do you believe in love at first sight or love after marriage? Romance is inbuilt in me. I value romance. For me, romance is a sense of belonging. I believe in romance to nourish with togetherness. Do you prefer your career over marriage? When would you think of getting married and to what kind of a person? I prefer a combo and as regards to when, it is for fate to decide. I would prefer a person with a golden heart, great looks and perfect understanding. What does success mean to you? Where do you want to see yourself in the next 10 years? Success is to be known, recognised and appreciated. I am working towards attaining success and to be known as a successful actress in the years to come.

How was your experience shooting with Anup Bhandari, Chief Editor, Models n Trends magazine? The experience was good and I was impressed with his professional approach. What is your advice to the models, who want to enter into movies? Make up your mind set, give yourself a certain time and be much focused.

hakespeare in his immortal lines on acting said that ‘life is a stage and all of us perform our destined roles throughout our life.’ Thus, we cannot escape even if we are not professional actors. That is why it is necessary for all of us to understand what acting is all about. Let’s understand it in our day to day life. We wear different hats (play different roles) in our lives. Every male or female has to deal with the opposite gender with sensitivity and dignity. We all are son or daughter, brother or sister, mother

or father, uncle or aunt, niece or nephew etc. Can we deal with all these relationships without keeping in mind the nuances of each relation? Isn’t this acting? At home, we are a family member and on the street we are a social animal. In the eyes of law, we are civilized citizens till we break a law. Then we become an accused or a criminal. We are a professional at the workplace, where we are either a subordinate or a boss. Can there be a single level of volume or pitch, when we speak in all these roles? Can we use the same language with everybody that we deal with? Definitely not. The moment we meet a person we measure him

struggling with English and end up as bad communicators.

according to his age, gender, our relationship with him and our purpose of meeting. Accordingly, we change our behaviour. That is acting. Having stated this point emphatically, let’s now shift to how we can do justice to these roles. We should work on our language. Each and every syllable has to be given due respect. If you use the wrong word, lay the wrong emphasis, mispronounce the word or if the diction is bad, you will not have the desired impact and result. Therefore, the first lesson to learn in acting is the language. Language is a medium of expression. Even birds and animals too have their own language. It is understood by some people, who develop this art of deciphering these sounds. Similarly, different people use different languages and dialects. There are thousands of them across the globe. Some people learn more than one language. However, initially you should try to work on one single language. Then it will be easier to learn the second, third and so on subsequently. The former Prime Minister of India, P. V. Narsimha Rao knew many languages. In India, we all inherit one mother tongue and learn English as the second language and maybe the third is a regional language. Unfortunately, today’s young generation ignores even their mother tongue. They keep on

You must speak slowly and loudly. Many times the students are unable to introduce themselves properly. They invariably do not know the etymology of their own name. You use your name throughout your life but do not know what it means! This must be corrected. So the first lesson is to work on your language. Read and speak everyday at least for half an hour. If you can do this exercise in front of a mirror, you will realise how you appear when you speak. You can record your own voice, listen to it and know where you faltered. You can even play it to someone, who is well conversant with the diction. He will be able to tell what your shortcomings are. Once you develop confidence in your voice and diction then you should start speaking in public. Do not lose a single opportunity to speak in your classroom, workplace, on the road or in the market. Do not hesitate to speak loudly, if the shopkeeper is not listening to you. Be polite but firm. Always remember to keep humility and dignity as your passwords. If you speak with courtesy, you will get the same in return. Do not shout on the cell phone, if you are not able to listen to the voice of the other party. Maybe, he is not listening to you properly. The crux of the matter is that you should be in total control of your voice, diction, pronunciation, pitch and choice of words. If you have control and command of these aspects, you can win half the battle. In the next issue, we shall talk about the body language.

Do you know that you have only three to five seconds to make a first impression?

lthough individuals should be judged by their worth, it is often the first impression that determines whether someone will provide you the time to reveal it or not. Before you speak, your image speaks a lot about yourself.

Let us imagine that I take you to a store and ask you to pick up a soap amongst hundred different kinds on the shelf. If all the soaps are unknown and are new brands in the market, which one would you pick up? Of course, you will pick the one which has the most attractive packaging and appeals to your vision. This is exactly the rule of life. If you are packaged well, people will pick 50

you up professionally and personally. However, if you do not appeal to their visual sense, they will reject you. It is because people use only 55 percent of their visual sense when they meet someone for the first time. What exactly do they see in that 55 percent? Well, they will notice your dress, grooming and most importantly, your etiquette. In other words, they will check out your packaging. The word ‘etiquette’ is very confusing to some of us. People think that etiquette is some rigid protocol or condition. Actually, etiquette is just a set of rules, mostly flexible, that allow all of us to function well during a socially or professionally challenging

Page 50 - 51:Layout 1

12:15 PM

situation. It is about treating other people with the same kindness and respect as you would want them to give you. There are so many opportunities to use this in everyday life. In some cases, it is as simple as opening the door for someone. Maybe someone needs help at work with something or maybe for doing the dishes and you do it, without being asked to do so. There are million ways to show proper etiquette. It really comes down to a conscious decision that you want to help and serve others.

Let us first understand about the origin of this word. In eighteenth century’s France, King Louis XIV used to invite people at his palace for parties and festivals. However, his gardener faced a serious problem; he could not stop members of the nobility from trampling over the garden. He finally attempted to dissuade their unwanted behaviour by posting signs in French called ‘etiquette’, which warned them to ‘keep off the grass and not walk on the flowers’. When this course of action failed, the King himself had to issue an official decree that none could go beyond the bounds of the signs.

Later, the name ‘etiquette’ was given to a ticket for the court functions that included rules regarding where to stand and what to do. Over time, the word ‘etiquette’ evolved and it came to mean all the little signs that help us to know what to do in new and different situations. Soon, etiquette came to mean all the things

we do to help us become better with those whom we meet in our daily lives. Etiquettes or manners guide us through all our activities. Moreover, it allows us to present ourselves with confidence and authority in all areas of our professional and personal life. Over the years, people were expected to follow an increasingly complicated set of rules. Many of the rules even seem silly today. However, since the 1960's, manners have become much more relaxed. Etiquette today is based on treating everyone with the same degree of kindness and consideration, and it consists mostly of common sense. It is also helpful to know about some rules, so as to know how to behave in certain situations. This makes life more comfortable for you and makes you more self-confident in social situations.

Have you ever stopped to think that why do you say ‘please’ when you ask for something and ‘thank you’ when someone does something for you? These kinds of behaviours are designed to help people to get along with one another. They are also intended to prevent people from hurting one another's feelings. Etiquette matters a lot, be it in your personal life or your professional life. Etiquette is the most important part of creating the right image. In the coming issues, we will cover many of them and will help you to bond better with people around you and will show you the best way to demonstrate respect and compassion for others. As the saying goes, “I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free.” Famous Florentine sculptor, painter and architect Michelangelo is said to have declared that he did not actually carve images into the marble but only revealed the image that was already within the marble. We all have the seeds of right manners and courtesy, but often fail to do the right things at the right time. What we need to do is to just polish ourselves, practice and bring out the hidden image of a gentleman or a lady.

1. Try natural looking makeup instead of a rich and gaudy one. Flawless skin

with mineral foundation, little mascara and bare lips, completes this look. Choose the products that moisture the skin and do not dry, dehydrate it. Also, take care of your skin with daily face cleanser and protect it from the harmful and ageing effects of the sun. 2. During winter, makeup foundation should be selected carefully as the foundation is considered as your second skin. Choose a creamy foundation that closely matches your skin tone. It will keep your face looking fresh and natural through the coldest winter months. Try dark coloured nail paints in fluorescent colours and you will rock!. 3. Eyes are a vital part of any makeup. Use an eye cream and concealer before applying eye makeup. This season, try smokey eyes makeup with individual false lashes on the outer upper edge for a more glamorous look. Smokey eyes work wonders for the night rendezvous. Use electric liners in metalic colours. Just one line on lower eyelid will do the trick. 4. Try eye shadows in gold, brown, silver, copper, bronze, turquoise or other bright shades. Avoid over indulgence and keep the occasion in mind before applying the eye shadow. Stay away from the pastels if you are exceptionally pale because they will just make you look more washed out. Do not over do it if your complexion is very dark. Use it carefully. 5. Lips are also another sensitive area of makeup. Exfoliate lips gently and use moisture-rich lipsticks. If you have chosen natural-looking eyes or the effect of naked eyes, red colours like rose, cherry and plum lips would definitely convey a final touchĂŠ to your look. Fair skin should wear sheer reds, but darker complexion can go bolder. To achieve the smokey eyes effect at its best, wear light lipstick in day time and dark one at night parties. Use light lip gloss and a touch of gold on the lips to highlight the seductiveness of Cleopatra.

MEN

Looking good is no longer the privilege of females only. Nowadays, men too know the importance of a striking appearance that imparts self confidence. An extraordinary large number of men are now going to salons for facials and are conscious of the latest skin and hair trends. As a result, men’s grooming products and salons have grown at a phenomenal pace...

he skin of a man, like a woman, is vulnerable to the sun exposure, air pollutants, chlorinated water and harsh soaps. These contaminants influence the skin; makes it dry, sensitive and hastens the ageing process. Men are ardent followers of the soap and water routine. However, soap is harsh on the skin and makes it alkaline. This disrupts the normal acid-alkaline balance and predisposes the skin to rash and skin sensitivity.

Skin care regimen

Men require skin care routines that are simple and not time consuming. To clean the skin, apply a light cleansing gel or face wash; wipe it off with either moist cotton wool or wash off. It will leave the skin cleansed, without causing moisture depletion. Rinse the skin well with plain water and dab on a skin tonic to tone and refresh it. This can be a pre-shave routine.

Page 62 - 64:Layout 1

12/7/2010

12:31 PM

Page 63

If the skin is oily and prone to blackheads, use a cleansing scrub. Rub it gently on the skin using circulatory movements and wash it off with plain water.

For shaving, choose a gentle, creamy, emollient product. This softens the hair and makes shaving much easier. It also leaves the skin smooth and supple. Most after shave lotions are alcohol based. This has a dry effect on the skin and causes rash. Thus, a non greasy aftershave cream is ideal. Choose an aftershave cream containing sandalwood, which is a powerful antiseptic and has a soothing effect. It has a natural fragrance and keeps the skin moisturised. Cleansing and sun protection are two of the most important aspects of a daily routine. Cleansing at night is of utmost importance, in order to remove all the pollutants that have been deposited on the skin during the day. Men spend more time outdoors in the sun, therefore, the application of sunscreen before going out plays an important role in preventing UV ray damage. With age, the skin care routine should also include nourishing and exfoliation. Nourishing provides the emollients, which help the skin to retain moisture. So, as oil-gland activity of the skin decreases, nourishing assumes more importance. The application of a night cream with a light massage also helps in improving skin texture. A nourishing cream, which

contains antioxidants like wheatgerm oil or vitamin-rich ingredients, helps to keep the skin looking younger and has a rejuvenating effect. Weekly exfoliation with scrubs helps to remove dead cells and boost the renewal process of the skin cells. The rejuvenation of the skin depends on the efficient renewal of healthy new cells. Due to advanced skin care techniques, a number of products have been formulated with ingredients that have greater age control benefits.

A salon facial can be a real treat and a great way to unwind. Apart from maintaining skin-elasticity and resilience, facial massages help to improve the normal functions of the skin, including that of cell-renewal. Face, head and body massages also have great value in terms of inducing relaxation and reducing stress. However, for oily skin and eruptive conditions, a facial treatment with clean up should be done, instead of a massage.

Men are probably more concerned about the condition of their hair than that of the skin. Healthy, well groomed hair require regular care with appropriate products. What one tends to forget is that the head like the face is also subjected to the dust and pollution, all day long. The face is washed daily, but the hair are not. Dead cells, oil secretion, pollutants, bacteria and dirt accumulate on the hair and scalp. Therefore, washing the hair is an important part of a man’s regime. In fact, the hair can be washed daily using very little quantity of a mild, herbal shampoo. Dandruff in the hair is a common problem, where the outer layer of the scalp peels off into little white scales. In some cases, the flakes can become large, greasy and yellowish in colour. These block the pores and interfere with the proper distribution of natural oil, making the hair dry and dull. Sometimes, there is an excessive secretion of oil, as is common during adolescence. This can lead to a condition known as oily seborrhoea, where the hair become too oily and the skin of the face, neck and back are prone to

For shaving, choose a gentle, creamy, emollient product. This softens the hair and makes shaving much easier. It also leaves the skin smooth and supple. Most after shave lotions are alcohol based. This has a dry effect on the skin and causes rash. Thus, a non greasy aftershave cream is ideal.

spots, rash and pimples.

Hair loss is more common amongst men than in women and can lead to baldness, known as ‘male pattern baldness’. It is known that male sex hormone testosterone is an important factor in male pattern baldness. Hair loss can occur due to many reasons, amongst which are hereditary factors, dandruff, stress, certain illness and a condition known as ‘alopecia areata’. Irregular care and abuse of the hair, by the use of chemical lotions and harsh products may cause hair loss.

Hair loss and dandruff can be avoided by clinical scalp treatment and regular care using appropriate products. Hereditary hair loss may not be cured but appropriate care can go a long way in reducing the intensity of the problem. The use of

Page 64

herbal hair tonics, revitalisers and clinical treatments to stimulate the hair follicles helps in checking hair loss and dandruff. It is also essential to be selective about the hair grooming products like gels and creams. Care should be taken to see that such products do not clog the pores of the scalp. Salons for men also provide conditioning treatment with henna, as it helps in removing dandruff and adds body, life and vitality to the hair.

The state of the skin and hair reflect internal health and lifestyle. Stress, lack of sleep, dietary deficiencies, rich and spicy food, excess alcohol, smoking and a sedentary lifestyle has a detrimental effect on both health and appearance. Remember, good looks result from good internal health and regular external care.

Hairstyle trends Today, short hair are in fashion since they are easy to maintain, especially during the summer months and help in avoiding hair loss or a receding hairline. However, some celebrities even prefer a totally bald look. • In short hairstyles, crew cut has been in fashion for quite some time. The crew cut suits people with an oval face. If you have big ears, long nose or a very large head, then this cut should be avoided. .

• Amongst short hairstyles, the spiked look is still popular, especially amongst youngsters. It is worn short at the sides and the back. The top layers are left long and are then styled with gel or wax into a spiked look. It can also be styled into a textured look, which is becoming increasingly popular. • A trend that is also catching on in short hairstyles is the hair worn short at the sides and back, while the hair are long on top of the head. The hair on top have a layered cut and are all brought forward towards the forehead. The texture is rugged and suits men with wavy hair.

Models Trends DECEMBER 2010

The style is reminiscent of the Regency era.

• Amongst the future trends in men hairstyles is the fringe cut. The fringe can be in varied lengths. Like in women, the side swept fringe is also catching up amongst men.

• Another trend that is foreseen will take us back to the 1960’s, which is a classic style hair cut. Here, the hair are short with a side parting and slicked back neatly. It is a very traditional style, which was popular with the Hollywood stars of the 60’s, like Cary Grant. • Another hairstyle with a slightly tousled look is also an interesting option. For this, medium length hair are better. The hair do not look obviously gelled and ‘set’ into a style, but has a slightly careless look. Of course, it is not really natural, but is styled to look that way. Hair styling products are used to achieve this look. • Streaked hair are no longer in fashion. Subtle, darker and more natural hair colours are trendy.

Finally, one has to select a hairstyle that is most suitable to oneself. Style is not about following fashion trends; it is something more individualistic, which goes far beyond fashion. Today, there is more freedom to adopt styles that suit individuality, hair texture and facial shape.

Clothing that makes you look

TALLER Every woman is not blessed with perfect height and there is no potion or medicine that can add those extra inches. Many a pretty girl do feel inhibited because of this drawback. However, a properly chosen dress and accessory can make you look significantly taller. Models n Trends suggests a few simple dressing tips, which can make you appear taller by atleast two to three inches. Play with colours

Wearing a dress of the same colour from head to toe can make you look taller. Choose a colour which compliments your skin tone. For example, black dresses are suitable for fair skinned people and makes them look taller. However, black is not the only colour that helps you to look slender. Dresses in monochromatic colours also make you look slimmer and taller. Keep in mind that the colour combination of your shirt and trouser or skirt should not divide your body into blocks of different colours. Choose clothes with similar colours for the upper and lower parts of your body. 70

Vertical limit

Be careful to select the right designs of your clothes. In order to look taller, choose shirts or jackets with vertical stripes. The vertical stripes on the slim fit single breasted jacket or coat will make you look taller. Always avoid cropped pants with horizontal lines.

Choose with care

If you have an average height, you should be careful while choosing a sweater. Avoid bulky sweaters and go for thin ones. Extremely bulky sweaters, coats and jackets will create the vision of a fat body and make you look shorter. Avoid horizontal stripes on your sweater or jacket as these will make you appear shorter.

Say no to loose fits

Elongate

Pants that cover the shoes make you appear elongated. This trick is quite common amongst women of below average height. The logic is simple. With the pants covering the shoes, your legs look longer and you appear taller.

Hats off to headgears

If you are of an average height, then you will appear taller if you wear a cap, hat or comb your hair backwards. Any trendy headgear that adds height will help you to look taller. However, avoid wearing a large hat because a disproportionate hat will make you appear shorter.

Some women believe that loose clothes hide their short and plump stature, but it is a wrong notion. If your height is below average, choose perfect fitting clothes, which suit your body type. Perfectly tailored clothes make you look slim and tall. Extra large clothes not only hide the limits of your body but also do not highlight the good features. They rather make your appearance bulky and shapeless. Baggy trousers look odd on short people.

Accessories alert

Apart from your clothes, some accessories give a negative effect to your height. Avoid large belts as these will make you look shorter. If you have a round and plump face, avoid wearing necklaces too close to your face because it will bring out the plumpness of your face. Longer necklaces will have the opposite effect. You can also choose high heeled sandals or shoes. If you do not like high heels then select platforms sandals.

All of us recognise superstar Salman Khan’s feroza bracelet, which has been with him through the years. Even though bracelets are less popular with men as compared to the Punjabi kada, but they can actually make your appearance look dominating. Choose a bracelet that fits properly on your wrist. A classic style will gel well with a formal or informal dress. Most stylish bracelets are made of precious metals such as gold, silver and platinum. These days, leather and beaded bracelets are also in vogue but should be worn only at non-formal occasions or with casual wear.

H

itherto, a classy watch was the vital jewellery in a man’s wardrobe. Occasionally, a gold ring and chain would be worn by him on special occasions. However, the man is now unfettering himself from machismo and flaunting his persona with more stylish ornaments. So what are these new fashion avatars, which can help him to transform into a style guru?

• If you do not like wearing a necklace then you can also opt for a gold, silver or platinum chain to project an influential image. However, choose a chain which is not too thin. Always wear precious metal chains and avoid fake ones. You can put on these chains both with daily wear and occasional wear. However, wear the chain inside the shirt and under no circumstances should it dangle outside. • Gold ring is a very popular fashion accessory amongst men of all

ages. However, besides rings made of gold, silver and platinum, even copper fashionable chunky rings are also in vogue. You can wear a ring in any finger and even in the thumb, as long as it looks good and matches the outfit. While choosing a ring, always look for a simple and elegant design. The size of a ring depends upon your choice and lifestyle. Silver rings always look good whether they are plain or mounted with a stone. However, avoid wearing a golden ring with a red ruby stone. This is an age old fashion now.

A necklace is worn to present a complete glorified look. The necklace for a man should not be multicoloured or heavy weight like it is for a woman’s necklace. Choose a necklace made of simple and small trendy beads. These beads should be either in one colour or in two, but avoid multicolours. The necklace should definitely match the clothes. Try and choose neutral colours that match most of the daily wear clothes. These type of necklaces are best worn with either T-shirts or casual checked shirts.

Studded earrings are a much sought after fashion accessory that has been in use since ancient times. Diamond studded earrings are nowadays more in fashion as a symbol of high status and hip looks. One ear pierced and adorned with a single studded earring is more in fashion than earrings in both ears. It depends on the type of work or lifestyle you are involved in. A simple one ear studded earring is in fashion since long and can easily combine well with any dress.

Well Bigg Boss was the best thing that happened to my career, Well, my glamorous appearance was my entry level in the film industry. Without any godfather or a famous surname, I am proud that I excelled in the industry. It is great to be a good looking woman but apart from this I am a girl, who has emotions like any other girl. This also got depicted in my stint in ‘Bigg Boss Season 2’, where the viewers noticed that the real Payal Rohatgi loves, cries, laughs, fights, worries and flirts just like any other Indian girl.

It is just that after goofing up in the show, once the contestants come out they realise their mistakes and publicise that the show was scripted, to save their ass. I knew Rahul Mahajan before the show. In fact, our contracts were made together, and the production company Endemol was aware of our relationship. We were kind of dating each other but I was not sure because of his roving eye. Trust my instincts, he did just that by having a rendezvous with Monika Bedi in the show. I was in a relationship with him and sometimes, when we are involved, we do the things, which that person asks us to do. Same was with me. Rahul wanted to generate TRPs and in the bargain, he used my emotions.

Are you planning to be a part of any TV serial or a reality show in future?

I love acting, dancing and all the excitement of a reality show. I guess never say never. Just enjoy the work that one finally does. The journey matters, not the destination. So yes, I am ready for all good works.

ry weather depletes moisture from the supple skin in winter, thereby making it rough. Low humidity in the atmosphere further affects and reduces the elasticity and lustre of the skin. As a result, one looks dull and aged. The skin requires vital care in wintry months and for this, one relies mostly on available cosmetics and beauty products. This can often lead to a wild goose chase for costly beauty aids. Isn’t it therefore simpler to follow some natural ways to stay fresh and glowing in winters?

Page 78 - 79:Layout 1

The eyes perform several tasks in a day and therefore need proper care. Spray normal water on the eyes daily in the morning and refresh them with a drop of rose water. Also, apply thin slices of cucumber or potato on the eyes daily and get that fresh feeling.

A nutritious diet with plenty of water is the ultimate mantra for a healthy body during the winter season. Add to your diet some fruits like orange, amala, and lemon containing vitamin C.

• The more the weather dries the face, the less healthier it looks. Store some natural products at home; add them in the diet as well as in beauty aids.

• Avoid a prolonged hot bath. Tone up the skin with olive oil or neem oil before or after a shower.

• The skin can be nurtured with a natural mixture of sandal wood, malai, honey and multani mitti. Curd or neem paste in this moisture mask can also be used, depending upon the type of the skin. This perfect combination of natural ingredients will work amazingly well and should be applied on the skin for at least 30 minutes. • Not only the face but hands and feet also

get dry and flaky during winters. Instead of going for a manicure or pedicure, apply a mixture of honey, glycerine and lemon juice daily. This will not only prevent itching but will also brighten the skin.

Remember, the more you care, the better you glow.

Meditate or do aerobics in fresh air for at least 30 minutes everyday. Let the tiny pores of the skin breathe and rejuvenate you. Use clarified butter (ghee) as a natural lip balm to moisturise the lips. Apply cold milk as a cleansing agent and a natural skin toner. This will moisturise and balance the natural lipid layer of the skin.

Page 87

Amitabh Bachchan

he Shahenshah of Indian cinema, Amitabh is really a living legend, who has performed many memorable roles. However, his awe inspiring role in movie Paa was no doubt the acme of his filmy career. In this highly anticipated film, he played the role of a 13 years old child affected by HutchinsonGillord progeria syndrome. To perform the character Auro in this movie, Amitabh had to take part in makeup sessions that lasted for hours. However, his acting was tremendous and this bestowed upon him many awards, including the coveted ‘National Film Award’ for ‘Best Actor’. Interestingly, his real life son, Abhishek Bachchan played the role of his reel life father in this movie!

Saif Ali Khan

When Saif Ali Khan aka Chhote Nawab debuted in Bollywood, he was criticised for his looks and acting. However, in spite of a slow start, Saif started getting recognition for his performance. Thereafter, his award winning role in movie Omkara as Langda Tyagi helped him to break his screen image of a lover boy. The movie marked his emergence at the very forefront of his acting peers and paved the way to a new horizon of success. For his work, Khan was presented the awards for ‘Best Actor’ in a negative role at the Star Screen, Filmfare, Zee Cine and IIFA Awards.

Aamir Khan

Known as ‘Mr. Perfectionist’ of Bollywood, this Khan is famous for traversing the path not tread upon. After the stupendous performance in Lagaan and

The Rising: Ballad of Mangal Pandey, Aamir was again the talk of the town with his blockbusters Ghajini and 3 idiots. It was amazing to see his portrayal in both movies. In Ghajini, he thrilled the audience with his chiselled body and eight packs. In 3 idiots, he entertained them as a college goer undergraduate student after shedding his packs and hard-bitten looks. Aamir may be in his 40s but he is one of the most physically fit actors in Bollywood and still has a childlike face.

Kamal Haasan

A frontrunner of talented actors of Indian cinema, Kamal Hassan is one of those actors who has successfully bridged the gap between the north and south movies. Though his fan following may be largely confined to the south, yet his talent as an actor has been appreciated all over the country. And the reason behind it? Of course, his go getting attitude and a god gifted potential to perform any character with ease. In movies like Indian, Chahci 420 and Dashavatar, Kamal never failed to amaze the audience through his makeover and acting skills.

Hrithik Roshan

This sensational actor is no doubt a sizzling star and the heartthrob of many cinema lovers. However, not many people know that Hrithik had a traumatic childhood, due to his stammering problem, which plagues him even today. When his father decided to introduce him in movies, he was not near perfect as compared to today’s status. However, with his hard work and determination, Hrithik overcame all his flaws. His performance was exceptional in both movies, Koi Mil Gaya, where he characterised a mentally challenged young man and then as the superhero of Krrish. Both performances earned him many awards and wide popularity as one of the finest talents of the Indian screen.

What women want?

Page 89

Shoes for the fairer sex come in all styles, shapes and colours and women seem to have affinity for all of them. Therefore, whenever a new pair of a shoe is seen on the shelf, she has a deep desire to posses it. However, one never knows what a woman may wear at an outing. At times, a strap laden sandal is out of place, or too dressy for her to carry. If it is an early dinner, company meeting, or a memorial service, usually a low heeled, comfortable black pump is vital. Since, much of the clothing has a nostalgic flavour; it is only natural that shoes should complement the dress.

What’s hot?

Boots have become popular once again. This winter season, the boot frenzy is as strong as it was in the old era, but the silhouettes have evolved. Various types of stylish and comfortable boots are available in the market. Knee high, mid-calf, and ankle high boots with low to medium heels are in vogue. For a real trendy touch, pick up a pair of ankle boots with high, stacked heels. Pair them with boot-cut pants or jeans, or push the limit by wearing them with a miniskirt or cropped pants. The trendiest boots right now are knee-high and have a round toe; cone-shaped or stacked heel, which makes them very comfortable and easy to wear.

Pair these boots with knee-length skirts to have a more rugged feel. You can also try these with knee-length work skirts, denim skirts, long skirts, and even tucked under pants or jeans. However, avoid wearing with pencil skirts, as this will upset the proportion. Try leather boots in colours, such as brown burnished leather, charcoal black, beige and camel brown. Using a fashion item in multiple colours gives more flexibility to coordinate and spice up the wardrobe.

Some handy tips for shoe shopping

• Always go for shoe shopping in the afternoon or

evening since the feet expand during this time due to physical pressure and temperature.

• Wear your socks when trying out various styles at the shoes store. Your toe must have enough space to twist. Your heel must not slip in and out of the shoe.

• Assess your wardrobe, lifestyle, and personality while shopping for shoes. Select the colours of the shoes, which gel well with all your dresses.

• Buy shoes with moderate and non-gaudy embellishments such as buckles,

gems, brooches, buttons and bows. Avoid shoes with oversized logos, labels and other trademarks.

• If you do not like sky-high heels then choose low heels, chunky heels, wedge heels or kitten heels.

• Do not go for a brand or designer’ label unless the shoes are extremely

comfortable and you love the way they look. Ill-fitting shoes can cause corns, calluses and blisters and even lead to foot, heel problems.

Attracting your soul mate with by Ankush Modawal, Feng Shui practitioner

I

A soul mate is a person, who completes you and complements the qualities you do not have, but desire to possess...

f you look closely at your life, the qualities that you are looking for in your soul mate are already there in the people present in your life. However, the only problem is that these qualities maybe spread over different people in your life. For example, you might want a soul mate, who deeply understands your needs. If you start searching about such a person, you might realise that one friend in particular understands you very well. Similarly, you might want someone, who is financially well off and has a fabulous career. Surprisingly, you will soon realise that you know a person with these qualities. And if you desire someone who is a complete eye candy? Just ask yourself, who in 90

n

Models Trends DECEMBER 2010

your life is very good looking and who you find attractive? The first step in manifesting a soul mate is to list out 24 qualities on a blank sheet of paper. Write down the name of a person you know personally in front of every quality, or otherwise who has all these qualities that you are searching for. When you are done, copy these 24 qualities onto another blank sheet of paper with a pink pen. Roll this paper into a small scroll and tie it with a red ribbon. Carry this in your wallet or purse wherever you go. It is very important that you do not rationalise or be ‘logical’ as to how you will find all of these ‘too good to be true qualities’ in one single person. Using Feng Shui, you can and you will get success.

Additional tips:

The south west corner of your home represents relationships. With the aid of a compass, find this corner at your home. To keep this area well illuminated, add a pair of Mandarin ducks along with two lamps kept together. Keep a yellow ceramic bowl and fill it with smooth edged small rocks to add stability to your relationship. Light two red candles every day for an hour to keep the fire burning.

2. Throw away or donate any stuff that you have accumulated from

your previous relationships. If you have had a previous relationship(s) that ended on a bad note, make a list of all the good things that came out of it. When you are done, visualise the meeting of your previous partner(s) in your mind, tell them that you forgive them completely and that you give them as well as yourself permission to move on in life.

3.

Clean the clutter in your home to make physical and emotional space in it for your soul mate. Make sure that your home is the perfect version where you would invite your soul mate to see or live in.

4.

Start wearing two Rose Quartz heart shaped pendants and don red clothes as often as you can.

5.

Make sure that you sleep on a double bed that is accessible from all three sides and is not pushed against a wall. Remove the television from your bedroom.

6.

If a toilet is located in the south west corner of the home, then it will surely hinder your love life. The best way to get rid of this problem is to hang a five rod wind chime. It would be even better if you can avoid using this toilet.

Well, the concept of decorating a home depends upon your imagination and visualisation. The more you innovate, the more lively is your interior.

If you need sofas for your living room, it is vital for you to buy them before you move into a new place. Curtains are also essential but since the investment is not huge, you may chose to buy reasonably priced curtains initially and then go in for more fancy ones a few months down the line when finances are a bit easier. According to me, ‘economy’ does not always mean buying cheap or reasonably priced stuff. It really means intelligent planning and prioritisation. Mukul Goyal, leading product designer

Extra Marital Affairs TILL DEATH DO US PART KYA?

M

arriages are said to be made in heaven and celebrated on earth. There are many good reasons to stay married, in spite of some missing pieces or elements that we yearn for in our partner. Now, if one does not truly gel with the person one is married to, then maybe this is a valid reason to get involved elsewhere. Sometimes married people fall out of love with their spouses and fall in love with another married person, someone they might have known for years or could have met by chance. Their spouse is the person they have children 94

n

Models Trends DECEMBER 2010

Extra marital affairs are not really about sex, but also about love, emotional bonding and a desire to feel alive. Is it need or is it greed, or is it a connection unexplained? Let us find out‌ with, but their lover tends to revitalise that lost soul connection, love, great sex, compassion and understanding. However, this soul connection, is against the norms of our society and suffers from the dilemma that who is more important, the spouse or the lover? Over years and with changing circumstances, partners in a marriage may not be able to cope up with the adversities and can drift apart. An unhappily married person is most prone to seek love from that someone, who helps in sharing the burden. Feelings of being misunderstood, ignored, undervalued, or even

I don’t agree with extramarital affairs, as they cause pain in relationships. However, people will always have them and for a variety of usually selfish and complicated reasons like neglect, insecurity, boredom, weakness, excitement, stupidity, loneliness and revenge. Aruna Shields, actress

rejection by the family may result in such affairs. So it may not be the desire to experience the “new’ or “forbidden” sexual relationship, but rather the need to re-experience the intense level of passion and the feeling of being “in love” again. Thus, love and passion remain decisive factors and the loss of these factors is a driving force towards initiation of such affairs. Friendship is the most basic relationship in any affair. When the extramarital couple become friends and feel an emotional bonding, they understand each other better and fall in love. They love discussing their feelings, emotions, happiness or sorrow more with each other rather than with their spouse. American author Dr. Willard Harley in his book, His Needs, Her Needs gives three factors that contribute in making an affair so enjoyable and exciting. He says that firstly the lovers seem to bring out the best in each other; secondly they ignore each other’s negative traits and thirdly they get turned on sexually as never before, while feeling that no one else could ever be as exciting a sex partner as their secret new lover. The truth is that the taste of the forbidden fruit is uncontrollable as it is so sweet, atleast for a while. However, if one can really care equally for the spouse and the lover, and can manage to live a dual life with

It happens...

• When an unhappily married couple falls out of love. • When a person finds a shoulder that he needs desperately and it does not happen to be that of the spouse. • When you meet an old flame once again. • Due to a debilitating illness of either spouse. • Due to curiosity or just for fun. • Due to unmet expectations. • Due to lack of warmth and intimacy on an emotional level.

its risks, then an extramarital relationship can be a successful possibility. Brian Weiss, a prominent American psychiatrist in his book Many Lives, Many Masters has revealed the phenomenon of life after death and various facets of rebirth and beyond. After regressing several people into their past lives, he found the soul connection. A wife in this birth maybe your sister in some other birth or maybe your brother in another or maybe your boyfriend, girlfriend, aunt, uncle etc. in another. However, the interesting part is that souls interact with souls and tend to recognise and renew their past associations in the present human form. Who knows then, your lover in this birth might have been your wife in another birth or vice versa. Believe it or not! Will death ever do us apart kya?

Extramarital relationship is for those, who want to escape from their responsibilities towards their spouse and to satisfy their urges. However, after a few years, you will feel bored of these relationships. It is not true that a man and a woman cannot be friends, of course they can be. However, they both have their own importance and place, which should be respected by both individuals.

Now that a sequel to this movie is being planned, producer Mukesh Bhatt has strongly denied the possibility to incorporate her in this movie. He admonishes her for hogging all the limelight for the success of the film, instead of being grateful to the producers and the film team. Mallika had earlier also approached the Bhatts for other movies, but was rejected because of her selfish behaviour. Mukesh strongly states that Mallika has ‘no career left in Bollywood.’ Dear Mallika, kindly note, success belongs to those, who are willing to adapt.

Isn't that nautanki? He is an educated guy but see what he is doing. Why are they after me?” She even condemned Aamir Khan and Salman Khan for doing silly things when their films are up for release. “Isn’t that being done to grab the media attention?” posed Rakhi!
