GROOMING TIPS FOR YOUNG GIRLS WANTING

TO BECOME A MODEL

T

here is no ‘mantra in heaven’ to look good but you can make heads turn by making simple tweaks in your day-to-day life. When you are aspiring to be a professional model, it becomes all the more important to look good. Then you need to invest in things and procedures that will help enhance your appearance since having good looks is essential to climb the success ladder in the fashion industry, where at all times you have to look your best.

Tip #1: Choose products carefully If you want to look your best, what should you think about first? Your skin should be healthy looking and should radiate a glamorous glow. With that being said, you should count on cosmetologists and aestheticians as your best friends and find those, which are known to deliver quality work. Take help of dermatologists while choosing a skin product. Invest in a good product range. Preferably go for a medical range that penetrates your skin. Seek a dermatologist’s guidance for selecting hyaluronic acid-based dermal fillers like Restylane and Restylane Vital Skinboosters, which provide long-lasting glow and radiance.

Tip# 2: Cleanse, Tone, Moisturise and Exfoliate. While regular skin cleansing, toning and moisturising are clearly beneficial, exfoliating your face on a regular basis can help your skin in a big way. Exfoliation works on all types of skin, no matter if it is dry, normal, oily or sensitive. You may also visit skin clinics on a regular basis for microdermabrasion, a skin-exfoliating treatment for acne, scar and fine lines.

Tip#3: Apply sunscreen Skin damage from sunlight builds up with continued exposure, whether sunburn occurs or not. In addition to skin cancer and sunburn, other effects can include wrinkling, premature ageing, and in course of time, it results in an almost leathery and dull appearance of the skin. Apply sunscreen that’s broad spectrum regularly whether it is sunny or cloudy to stay young.

Tip#4: Opt for laser hair removal Being a model, it is very difficult to keep up

with shaving, tweezing, or waxing, to remove unwanted hair on the face and body. Laser hair removal is a better option that makes the skin soft and silky.

Tip# 5: Maintenance for face and body After all, walking on the ramp with confidence requires a lot of preparation. Thus it is important that you observe good grooming habits that enhance the tone, clarity and texture of your epidermal layers. Indulge yourself in a stress relieving maintenance program every month, like medi facials and body therapies that address a lot of skin concerns and help you with skin rejuvenation, as well as relaxation. If there is flab/fat, take steps to reduce them, either through exercise or through some treatments.

Tip# 6: Hair care It is all about appearance when it comes to being a model. Long, thick, bouncy, beautiful voluminous hair is a sign of vitality and youthfulness. Shampoo with mild product, condition your ends, and apply a heat protector before blow-drying. Also, treat hair to a weekly deep conditioner to replenish moisture and seal the cuticles, meaning fewer split ends.

Tip# 7: Show your feet and hands some love Not only do your nails need to be cut to the right length, filed, cleaned and painted, your hands and feet also need to be kept soft and glowy. Indeed, every area of your body needs to be picture-perfect and that no angle should be unflattering.

Tip# 8: Smile with confidence If you're quaffing red wine and black tea, or smoking cigarettes, expect the results to show up as not-so-pearly whites. Other culprits to blame for pale teeth include colas, gravies, and dark juices. Remember that if what you put in your mouth is dark, then it will probably stain your teeth. Brush immediately after eating or drinking foods that stain teeth and use a good bleaching agent, either over-the-counter or in the dentist's office. For convenient teeth-cleaning action, eat an apple.

Tip #9: Watch out for your body odour How you smell is very important in fashion

industry. Wearing a perfume and a deodorant won’t always help. As a model you may have to try out different outfits, change as quickly as possible to be on the ramp without staining your clothes with sweat. Consult a dermatologist for some solution for sweat control.

Tip # 10: Proper make up is a must You need to get used to having your face made up and project facial expressions, appropriate to your appearance. You can have your face beautified by a professional and observe the way he or she uses various items to bring out your best features. It is important to use high quality make up and make sure you take it off completely before going to bed, to continue to have good skin.

Tip# 11 Replenish yourself with water Is drinking enough water really essential for the appearance of your skin? While not everyone agrees, we think the answer is a resounding yes! Skin is intricately tied to the overall health of your body. When your body is properly hydrated, you'll look better and feel better. Water gives you a radiant complexion and in addition, bloating and puffiness often disappears.

KNOW YOUR MAKEUP BEFORE BEING SHOT Makeup enhances one’s beauty and appearance. In the world of glamour, a person with a good understanding of makeup enjoys an edge over others, who lack this expertise‌

T

he glamour industry, whether it is films, fashion or modelling, is a big challenge and is highly competitive, where you are judged on the basis of your performance, as well as your looks. Your portfolio is your gateway to enter into these industries, especially in the modelling profession. To have a good portfolio, you depend upon your photographer and your

looks. Your appearance in front of the camera is enhanced with the help of a flawless makeup and a skilful fashion photographer, who employs many techniques to downplay the flaws and highlight the best in you. Since a photograph is the permanent record of a moment in time, thus models captured at that particular

CHARACTER CHANGE Here the purpose of makeup is to create a much altered or completely different looking character. For example, presenting a haute couture, space alien or other historical character. However, character change need not be so extreme. In the entertainment industry, the looks are altered to suit a character role being portrayed by the actor. What would the theatre be without the skills of a good makeup artist?

MAKEUP FOR PHOTOGRAPHY The model, who learns the basic makeup techniques at the initial stage, has a head start over others. Professional fashion photographers hire the services of makeup artists for

moment must appear at their best. “Looking their best” can mean many things, depending upon the purpose, which they are being shot for. This objective requires them to look very attractive, intelligent, dignified, thoughtful, and a part of the character they are portraying. For all these traits, quality makeup is a must. However, many different things also assist in creating a photograph that brings out the desired results. The model should have oodles of oomph factor along with proper body language and other traits, such as proper state of mind, actions, physical attributes and well styled clothing.

The major objectives for using makeup are appearance enhancement and character change.

APPEARANCE ENHANCEMENT The goal is to enhance the models’ skin and features in order to make the model appear as attractive as possible. Makeup is used to correct certain shortcomings, such as skin imperfections, short eyelashes etc. and to alter the overall appearance of a person’s facial structure.

WHY MAKEUP?

A professional model should know about the fine points of makeup techniques; do's and dont's of makeup; latest trends and the latest makeup products available in the market for enhancing the personality, in front of the camera. Photography is an art and a photographer is an artist, who defines one’s feelings and emotions in an impressive way. When one comes for a portfolio, he does not know exactly about his persona. So a good photographer along with a fine makeup artist boosts his confidence and helps him to bring out that X factor.

Capil Verma, fashion photographer

the portfolio shoot of models. However, during auditions, it is not uncommon for models to be expected to take care of their own makeup needs. Thus, a model with a good understanding of the application of makeup definitely has an edge over others, who do not possess this skill. With proper makeup, the portrayal of a subject will be far better than that of a person, who has not applied makeup at all. The complexity of photography tends to capture not only the good attributes but also the flaws of the person being photographed. Sometimes, a photograph can even exaggerate the less attractive attributes. For example, one may notice that the camera adds weight onto a person; tends to make skin look rougher; makes blemishes stand out or causes features to be more defined than actually desired. Once proper makeup is done, it leads to greater confidence while posing in front of the camera. A skilled photographer, image stylist, hairdresser along with the makeup artist can do wonders for the appearance of a model.

PREPARING THE FACE

POWDER

Wash, exfoliate the dry skin, tone and moisturise the face before applying makeup. Oil control is very important. Try to use oil free products.

Use compact powder and re-apply between shots to get a matt finish look.

CONCEALER This should be two shades lighter than the skin to cover blemishes and dark spots. Apply it before the foundation.

FOUNDATION Choose a thickly formulated foundation rather than a thin one so that all the blemishes are covered easily. Blend foundation from chin to neck, so that it mixes well with the skin tone.

EYES Highlight eyebrow bones using light shadow to create lively eyes. Avoid eye shadow that is too frosty or shimmery because it will appear shiny. Apply eyeliner with precision. Use waterproof mascara. Overall application needs to be more than normal makeup.

LIPS Use lipstick and a lip liner of the same colour. The lip liner shade should be darker than the natural lip colour. Apply lip gloss for the shiny glossy look.

COCKTAIL FACIAL

here are many fruits and vegetables that not only taste amazing in drinks but are also very beneficial for the skin. Fruits like apples, pineapples, kiwis and berries have enzymes, which help to chemically exfoliate the skin. Vegetables like cucumber and carrot are calming and cooling. Herbs contain essential oils that can treat conditions or just provide aromatherapy. Nowadays, cocktail facial is in vogue. In the following passages, you can understand this trendy concoction and use it to your maximum advantage.

Cocktail facial It is nothing but a mix fruit facial. Cocktail facial is a mask therapy where 6-7 fruits, like mango, kiwi, lichi, tulsi, kothemir, strawberry ,

pappaya, watermelon, orange or strawberry can be used. Cleansing: Use tulsi for cleansing. Scrub: Use strawberry mixer for scrub as strawberry is very good for dry and dehydrated skin . Toning: Use kothamer water for toning. Steam: This is done for maximum benefit. Toning once again: Before massage, apply kiwi slices on the face for about 10 minutes. Kiwi contains vitamin C and is best for all types of skins. Kiwi also enhances the immune system and purifies the blood. The skin tends to look very fresh and charming.

Massage This is done with a circular motion, using the pappaya skin and is very beneficial, as it

acts as a protection against pollutants. It helps to remove the free radicals from the skin and increases the blood circulation to the heart. Pappaya removes the dark circle patches. The massage can be done for 15 minutes. Mango mask: Next apply this mask, which is made of honey, curd, mango slice mixed in grinder. Apply for15 minutes. This is rich in Vitamin C and reduces wrinkles, while enhancing the immune system. After 15 minutes, remove with normal water. Use SPF. This facial gives very good results. Cocktail facial can be done before all such sessions. Most of the fruits are good for the skin.

COVER GIRL

POOJA MISRRA

Pooja Misrra, well what a transformation from September 2009 when she was our cover girl, till now and wow! At that time we could clearly see the spark, which by the time of our latest shoot is already blazing all that she encompasses! One could say the metamorphosis has been that of a blossom from a bud to a flower! The ideas that were brimming then have fructified now! Be it tarot card reading, celebrity blogging, designing her own clothing line or singing, life sure has come a full circle. Here’s Pooja blowing away the negativities and

sabotage in her life and entering newer dimensions, such as tarot card reading, celebrity blogging, designing her own clothing line and singing. ModelsnTrends in a candid tete-a tete with reality show star, actress and super model Pooja Misrra, celebrates her straight forwardness, hard work, dedication, will power and never say die attitude, which we are sure will always place her, as a force to reckon with, in this glamour world. We hope all the aspiring models and actors will be inspired by ‘what Pooja is and what she stands for’.

So you finally decided to come out with your own song. Is the name Spare Me symbolic?

Well as a matter of fact it is! We all remember my straightforward attitude on Big Boss and the way it was cut rated and manipulated in the edit due to the shows need for sensationalism, and of course it's controversial format! Well all my fans, friends and well-wishers have been telling me to set the records straight for a while, hence this song. The world can hear my side of the story through the song, which is about giving credit where it’s due and is ultimately a cry for redemption! Therefore ‘Spare me’ as a title fits in just fine, which incidentally was also my popular dialogue on the show ‘Big Boss’. Is it true that you plan to shoot the video of the song in Srilanka?

Well I recently visited Srilanka on the invitation of the Consolate General, and have fallen in love with it’s scenic beauty. I had the fortune of seeing some pristine and picturesque locations there and would love to use them as a backdrop, while filming the video of ‘Spare Me’. People have this wrong notion about you being psycho, temperamental and a fighter cock, while in real life you are a polite and well-mannered girl. Who planted this wrong imagery about you in the media and how do you deal with it?

Well, very honestly I am a short-tempered person and that small trait has been blown out of proportion by my rivals, haters and detractors. I have a great upbringing so my parents have taught me impeccable manners and etiquettes, and all those who know me well enough, trust me and swear by my talent and determination. I pity and sympathise with the wannabe and insecure lot, who try to concoct cock and bull stories, just to satiate their anxieties about me being far more superior as far as flair, expertise and professionalism is concerned! Therefore, I would like to tell my fans, friends and well wishers to not go by hearsay and see me in my new avatar in my upcoming projects. We have seen you blossom over years, and you are looking hotter, more divasque and in control! Would you care to share the secrets of your beauty and fitness?

Well, yes I sure have changed! And I am getting innumerable compliments about my new avataar. Well, very honestly it's hard earned! I train everyday at the gym, do my bikram yoga; I try to incorporate pranayam, and keep my thoughts positive. As we all know, in the showbiz industry there are a lot of insecure scavengers, who try to suck your energy and drain you, but my will power, and never say die attitude sees me through this insecure lot! Well your body looks in top form! Could you tell us a little about your sporty background?

Well yes, I was the ‘Sportsgirl of the year’ at Cathedral and John Canon, as well as the sports captain of Wilson House

of Cathedral and John Canon School! I went on to become the swimming and diving champion! Got multiple awards for having the best body in the business, and now I have developed a new passion of late, and it's 'Football'. Trust me, I love kicking the balls! You have turned producer. How did that metamorphosis take place?

Well yes, years of hard work, experience and administrative genius have finally arm-twisted me into turning producer. I love the whole process and experience of it all. Besides, as far as the creative inputs and detailing go, I have always been the one who calls the shots, so now I can officially sit on the producers’ chair and call them. What are your latest ventures as a producer?

Well, to begin with, we are shooting a lot of content for the digital platform. Then there are some TV shows, a music video and eventually a Bollywood movie! We heard that you are going to be singing now? Exciting, tell us all about it!

Well my first track, ‘Spare me’ is dedicated to all those fans, friends and well-wishers, who spent their hard earned money to vote for me when I was playing the biggest game of my life on the reality show 'Big Boss'! I am ever so grateful to them that they never let me get evicted from the show, for the lack of votes! They all have been sending me fan mails, Facebook and Twitter messages to voice my side of the story....and I am doing just that through this song, which is a message from my

heart. I have realized that whenever a genuine message is sent from the heart, it reaches the hearts of millions....just like 'Spare me' my popular dialogue on big boss, which was an instantaneous reaction to the negative and hostile environment on the reality show 'Big Boss'! Tell us about your clothing lines! We understand that you are in the process of launching a third one?

I launched my first clothing line 'Caliente', which means 'hot' in Spanish. This collection consists of meticulously crafted cocktail dresses and gowns from my workshop in Singapore, which I launched in 'FUEL', a national chain of designer apparels. I took a 360 degrees spin with my second clothing line, which consisted of sarees, made of georgette, chiffon and satin. I have always admired Yash Raj movie heroines and the romanticism weaved around them, hence I dedicated this collection to Yash Raj Films. I am in the process of launching my third clothing line, where again I have tried to do something different as I am structuring tuxedos and suits for men. As I have always visualised my dream guy in a crisp and sharp tux, I thought by this clothing line I could show the boys, how it is actually done! Talking of guys....tell us, are you single? And who would you like to date from Bollywood?

Yup I am very much single, and the very first person I would like to go on a romantic, poetic and candle lit date with would be Amitabh Bachchan, probably on a hilltop after a chopper ride. The second person I would like to go on a date with would be Salman Khan; on a cruise ship, where we could go for a dip in a pool and see who can dive deeper. I will eternally be grateful for the fact that his brother Arbaaz Khan had spotted me first when I had started off, and I was also being considered for Debang. The third time lucky date would be with the ‘King of Bollywood, Shahrukh Khan’, who I would like to share target and intelligent banter with, while shooting at a firing range! Well we have heard that you are an excellent dancer and have done many item dance performances in movies as well as live audience .... tell us a little about your love for dance?

Yes, I love dancing! I used to dance with Shaimak Davar in my college days and I think dancing is a great release! Dance is the hidden language of the soul, of the body. And trust me when I say; it isn’t only my body that is sexy, my soul is smokin' hot too! We have heard that you have taken to cooking like a forest does to fire! Tell us more about this new passion?

I feel cooking is therapeutic and a very satisfying experience. It fulfills the desire to give, especially when it is for loved ones! In fact I have some secret recipes that make for scrumptious meals, which I would like to share with everyone soon!

30

n

Models Trends AUG - SEP 2014

We know you as a bright spunky girl but there is a lot of sorrow that you hide behind your smile. A little birdie tells us that you have been put through a lot of torture by insecure and envious people, who had hid-

den agendas and to fulfill them they tried to harrow you and break your spirit! Tell us about that?

Well, my father was the Chief Commissioner of Income Tax and after he retired and moved to Pune, I was continuously targeted, manipulated and stalked. In fact a very dirty game was played to sabotage my career and spoil my relations with the top media publications of the country and prominent families of the film fraternity. They kept me trapped by hacking my phones and email accounts, as well as by shadowing me, wherever I went! Just because I was alone they misused my solo position to make me a puppet to fulfill their vices! They used hypnosis and mind techniques to sabotage my career! I was hypnotised with a carefully laid out design and made to fight with Shatrughan Sinha’s family, who are old family friends. I had earlier also acted in a movie for Shotgun Productions. They made sure that my future in Bollywood was ruined. It was done in a very scheming manner! All my media interviews were manipulated in connivance with my PR agency and the meaning changed, so as to to offend the Sinhas. To make matters worse, when Arbaz Khan's secretary called me with a proposal for the movie Dabang, they very slyly got Sonakshi Sinha to do it, so that I get upset with the Sinhas. I was barely out of college and have the highest regards for Salman Khan and Shatrughan Sinha and would like to take this platform to clear out this mess created by a third party, who needs to be sued for interference and game playing and am going to do just that! Besides I will always be grateful to the Salman Khan family to have spotted my talent first. I was made to run around and a lot of my precious energy and time was wasted while these people made money from my hard work and did not share a penny. I was mentally, physically and emotionally tortured and trapped wherein I kept a stoic and dignified silence all these years, while I secretly bled, cried and was even attempted with murder. I am taking legal action against these people, as they have to pay for damages and delays, as well as the torturing and sabotage! By now I would have been where I deserve to be had it not been for them, but the brave heart that I am, I have survived and fought this through and will finally get to where I belong! What are your pet peeves in a man?

I hate selfish, opportunistic power hungry freaks, who are so greedy and stingy that they don’t spare a thought for others. Therefore my mantra in life is always, love yourself first, the rest comes later! Although we see superstar written all over you, what is that one quality in you that you feel will take you to the top?

My passion and fire! I still have the energy of an 18 year old when I am shooting and an abundance of ideas, creativity and expressions. I still treat every shoot as my first and never take my stardom for granted! We believe your twitter account was hacked and the hacker was abusing everyone in the film industry under your name. Is that true?

Yes, after big boss I got a lot of followers on twitter and these people were really jealous, so they hacked my twitter account and were abusing all and sundry from it and made me loose all my followers. I also lodged a police complaint and RTI against this crime! So to set the records straight, which are the ID’s through which we can find your original account on social networking sites?

On facebook - www.facebook.com/sparemesayspm On twitter - www.twitter.com/sparemesayspm On instagram- http://instagram.com/misrrapooja On itimes.com- http://ww.itimes.com/poojamisrra/interest-updates From being on the cover in September 2009 till today, what would you like to say about your association with ModelsnTrends and its chief editor Anup Bhandari?

It has always been a pleasure shooting with models n trends magazine what with their huge luxurious photography studio in NOIDA...! I think Anup Bhandari is a great guy, helpful and full of zest for life! He has a keen eye and can relate to that!

The Seven Cardinals of

Modelling

Do you think that modelling is child’s play? Do you have a mindset that anyone having merely handsome looks and a chiseled physique can become a model? Are you interested in modelling but looking for an institute or agency for guidance? Well, here are a few rules to follow…

M

odelling is a career that not only requires firm discipline but also a set of rules to be followed religiously. Just like any other profession, this too has its share of ups and downs. You need devotion, dedication, 44

n

determination and professionalism to be successful. However, the term ‘rule’ is not to scare you but rather to help you in building a rock-solid foundation for a successful profession in modelling and beyond.

1.

Get a good portfolio done

The foundation of this profession is in getting a proper portfolio, which is the gateway for establishing a successful career in the fashion world. Choose an established fashion photographer for a good quality portfolio. A good photographer can do wonders and will highlight the best in you. A well-organised quality portfolio helps a model to be short listed by future clients for meetings and auditions. It is an investment that will pay back rich dividends.

You Must know

Q How should I get my portfolio made? A Any good portfolio should be taken in at least five outfits out of which one should definitely be in a formal attire. The formal outfit can be a suit or sherwani etc. for a male and saree, lehenga or salwar etc. for a female. For males, the other four dresses may be either jeans, trousers, shorts, briefs or cargos in combination with any T shirt, casual and formal shirt, jacket etc. For females, the other dresses may be either mini, midi, skirts, jeans, pants, capris in combination with any tops, T-shirt, swimwear, bikini etc.

Q What type of photos shots should the photographer take?

A

Your photos should depict how you look naturally. Ideally, the following shots should be taken: (a) Face, (b) Mid shot, (c) Full length, (d) Sitting shot (complete body) and (e) Photographer’s option.

Q What should I take from the photographer as part of my portfolio?

A

(a) CD of the entire shoot (b) Contact sheets (8” x 12”) of the selected pictures ( c) Ten photographs (8” x 12”) of different views and (d) Comp Card (6” x 8”).

Q I don’t live in Delhi, which photographer should the portfolio shoot?

I

Q What are my chances of getting work assignments?

A Photographs of best entries as decided by our eminent jury in each category (male/female) feature in the “TOP MODELS” and “MEGA MODELS” section of Models n Trends. This magazine is read across the world. Advertising agencies, fashion designers, fashion choreographers, theatre, film personalities and various professionals from the fashion and film industries locate new talent through this magazine. You can imagine the tremendous opportunity through this high profile fashion magazine, Models n Trends and the dynamic portal, www.modelsntrends.com

We are trying to negotiate special packages (as done in Delhi) with prominent photographers across India. However, in the meantime, if you have selected a particular good photographer in your area, then please give us his particulars (address, mobile number and email) so that we can discuss the modalities and work out a special package for you.

Q What about the wardrobe required for the shoot?

own outfits because these definitely fit better. Rarely is an outside wardrobe asked for. As such it is not included in the package. However, Models n Trends advise you to use your own outfits. If required our photographers will arrange for these outfits at subsidised cost.

Q Do I have to pay for the make up?

A Not at all, the makeup is included in the above package.

2.

Experience counts

4.

Develop a professional attitude

6.

Hard work always pays rich dividends

As an aspiring model, focus on assignments most suited to your abilities and competence. This will give your profile both quality and content. Be persistent in approaching magazines which promote upcoming models. Appearing in the editorial of a magazine will set you apart from others and will give you recognition in the fashion world. At the initial stage, for a year or so, the prime concern for every model should be to complete as many assignments as possible, without bothering about the quantum of payment. Climb the ladder steadily, targeting towards better brands, which necessarily would mean better exposure, package, and of course a better experienced profile.

Just like the actors portray the character and not their real self, you too have to get into the skin of the character that you are portraying. You have to represent the looks of a person that the photographer, client and art director feel is necessary for their perception. For this purpose, you should be prepared to act in a particular manner, even if you feel it is not the ‘real you’. The real you should take a back seat and just follow the instructions given by the person in command. Smile, cooperation and sincerity can work wonders.

There is absolutely no substitute to hard work combined with discipline. Modelling takes a lot of stamina and patience, as the profession has stretched out working hours. A photo shoot can go on for as long as sixteen hours and at any time of the day or night. Just looking for a suitable job could keep you on your toes all day and at the end of the day, you still have to look fresh and charming. However, this endeavour is bound to pay rich dividends and take you to great heights.

3.

Go where the jobs are

5.

Promote yourself and your clients

7.

Conduct yourself with dignity

Modelling opportunities are found mostly in metros. However, majority of the work is in Delhi and Mumbai. Delhi is the hub of the fashion world and Mumbai of Bollywood. If you live elsewhere, then immediately move to either of these cities depending upon the type of work that you would like to do. However, as a starting point, Delhi is a better option. It would be nearly impossible to get selected for an assignment living in a far flung area. Preference is always given to the models, who are in the close vicinity of the working area, as it not only saves time but also the travel expenses. Also, try to network with people associated with this industry.

Once you are in the industry, you become a small business house with your own contacts that include photographers, fashion designers, stores and commercial advertising clients. A model has to spend a lot on his advertising and promotion. Unless you show people, who you are and what you can do, it will be difficult to get further opportunities. It means that you should be ready to pay for a good and exciting portfolio, business cards, advertising in agency’s head books, magazines, websites and a variety of other means to get noticed and move forward.

No matter how successful and sought after you are, adhere to the basic etiquettes, such as politeness, humility, modesty, dignified behaviour, mutual respect, complete focus on work and work ethics.

PICK THE RIGHT

GOGGLES TO BEAT THE HEAT by Dr. Sanjay Dhawan, Director, Ophthalmology, Fortis Healthcare

C

onsidered as fashion accessory, the sunglasses are not just a style statement, it’s an essential tool to protect the eyes from intense heat of summer. Long-term exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation in summer wreaks havoc on eyes causing severe eye ailments. The heat and humidity affect the sensitive texture of eyes, increasing the chances of eye infection resulting in reduced vision or vision loss. Hence it's important to know what kind of light you need to protect your eyes from and what type of light is not necessarily harmful.

Tips of picking non prescription right sunglasses Check to make sure your sunglass lenses are perfectly matched in colour and free of distortion and imperfection. As most of the people believe that darker sunglasses provide better protection, but that opt is not necessarily the case. To protect eyes from intense heat always go for sunglasses which covers whole eye and block both UVA and UVB radiation. The lens tint should block 80 percent of transmissible

light but no more than about 90 percent of light, or it will be hard for you to see. The most essential point of a sunglass lens to check with is how much UV radiation it absorbs. In terms of absorption the Gray-colour lense is the considered to be the best to reduce the light intensity without altering the colour of objects. It provides the most natural colour vision. Neutral gray, amber, brown, and green are good colours to choose from. In addition to UV protection, also check the optical quality of the lenses. You can easily test the quality of sunglasses by looking at something with a rectangular pattern, such as a floor tile. Hold the glasses at a comfortable distance and cover one eye. Move the glasses slowly from side to side, then up and down. If the lines stay straight, the lenses are fine. If the lines wiggle, especially in the centre of the

lens, try another pair. Although there is no lens which is unbreakable, but plastic lenses are less likely to shatter when hit by a ball or stone. Polycarbonate plastics, used in many sports sunglasses, are best option but it can have scratches easily. So, if you buy polycarbonate lenses, choose ones with a scratch-resistant coating. Use protective eyewear instead of sunglasses for hazardous activities. If you are going to be engaged in outdoor activities like water or snow skiing that put your eye at risk for injury, don't count on your eyeglasses for protection. Protective eyewear is available with UV protection to shield your eyes from sunburn and glare. Once you have the right sunglasses, make sure you wear them, especially in the summer when UV levels are at least three times higher than in the winter. Also be sure to wear them when participating in winter sports, particularly at high elevations. All sunglasses must meet impact standards set by the FDA for safety.

ow would you feel while looking at yourself in the mirror wearing a premium outfit and a proper makeup but with messy hair? Of course, not a perfect picture. The hair makes or breaks your appearance. A stitch in time saves nine. Thus, it is always better to timely initiate some necessary steps, so as to save your crowning glory.

A nutritious diet is not only vital for the whole body but also for the hair. The body’s nutrients are transferred to the living part of the hair, which is the root. Consequently stress, smoking, eating non-nutritious and junk food can result in hair dullness and hair loss. Proteins, such as dairy products, meat, fish, poultry, fresh fruits and vegetables are extremely beneficial for healthy hair and should form an integral part of the daily diet.

Models Trends AUG - SEP 2014

Always pamper your hair by deep conditioning and overnight oil massage at the end of the week. in the long run, it will make the hair softer, shining and healthier. Whenever out in the sun, always protect your hair from the harsh sun rays, as the hair loses its normal moisture and becomes dry with the Uv rays.

Often people brush their wet hair. This causes hair breakage. Opt for a wide-toothed comb instead of a brush. Wet hair should not be rubbed dry with a towel. it is better to just wrap your wet hair with the towel, to prevent hair breakage.

Dandruff is a common problem related to the hair, which is a result of hormonal imbalance, poor diet, stress and harsh hair care products. Dandruff also causes hair thinning. it is best to massage the scalp with olive oil, castor oil, almond oil, or coconut oil to remove the dandruff. Always comb your hair in the night before going to bed. This increases the flow of blood in the scalp.

Chemically rich products are harsh for the scalp and clog the pores on the head, which can result in hair thinning. it is better to try herbal shampoos and conditioners. The hair should be washed at least three times a week, using less quantity of the shampoo. Use your fingertips and not your nails while shampooing. Use butter milk (lassi) or yoghurt (dahi) to remove the dryness and to add shine to the hair.

TIPS ON TESTING GEMS AND JEWELS by Gaurav S. Issar, Managing Director, IDT, a testing lab for gems and jewels.

D

on’t be dazzled when you walk into a diamond jewellery store to start shopping for that perfect diamond ring, fabulous diamond bracelet, or exquisite pair of diamond earrings. It is almost like being a little kid and walking into the candy store with a pocket full of money. It is easy to get carried away with the beauty of the sparkling stones. Go through these tips and come out wiser:

Placing the gem over a printed text Real diamonds refract so much light that you wouldn't be able to see any lines, circles or full letters coming through. But a diamond that's cut too shallow may produce inconclusive results. So, one of the techniques is to place the diamond on a newspaper and printed text.

Be a mirror Another test requires breathing on the gem like you would do in front of a mirror. Diamonds are good at conducting heat, so the fog your breath creates should clear up almost instantly. However, a synthetic rock called moissanite can pass this test.

Comparison required Because different stones have different densities, you can also compare how heavy your gem is to a real diamond of roughly equal size. For instance, if your stone is a cubic zirconia, it will be about 50 percent more heavy than a real diamond of equal size.

Go electronic If you really want to be positive, you need to

test these, using proper tecniques. Commercial pen-size probes, called simply "diamond testers," can test the thermal conductivity of your gem. However, moissanite registers as a diamond with these devices, just like with the breath test. So, you may need another probe that reads the stone's electrical conductivity or a dual tester that measures both properties.

Value the diamond Just because it is shiny, detailed, and made of gold, so it looks flashy does not mean it is a quality setting. Learn a little about what diamond jeweller lingo means, such as the difference between 14 carat, 18 carat, and 24 carat gold. Genuine, real diamond jewellery uses a good mounting method to hold the stones in the setting. This means there should be prongs surrounding the diamonds and other stones, and you should be able to see the entire stone. Jewellers grade diamond on the “4Cs- cut, clarity, color and carat weight. Kindly suggest, if you would like to take it forward. IDT is the biggest network of Gem Testing laboratories across India. It is India's first network of private gemological laboratories across India, which empowers and enables jewellers and jewellery brands to get a third party certification for their loose and studded gems, diamonds and jewellery before selling their products to

customers. Perhaps, IDT certification of Diamonds has added the 5th C i.e Confidence to the internationally acclaimed 4 C's of diamonds which includes cut, color, clarity and carat. At present IDT has certified over 20,00,000 pieces of diamonds, gemstones and jewellery across India and Internationally through the IDT platform. They have launched operations in Rajasthan, New Delhi, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir across India, U.A.E & Singapore Internationally, and after booming in these states, they are all set to focus on expanding the service offering to other places like Mumbai, Gujrat, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Utrakhand within 3 to 5 months. They have recently opened Kochi and Gujrat outlets. As a part of initiative to reach out to a larger target audience, they are trying to enter into strategic partnerships with the industry and premium media brands to create awareness across the masses. Hair Loss Some of the reasons for hair loss are dandruff, oily scalp, stress, thyroid imbalance, illness, nutritional deficiencies, damage to hair caused by repeated dyeing, colouring, perming, straightening. Hair loss after pregnancy or during menopause is also common. There can also be a condition of hair loss known as alopecia areata.

Dandruff and oily scalp Dandruff is one of the most common causes of hair loss. If hair loss is due to dandruff and oily scalp, the hair should be washed with a mild herbal shampoo, rinsing very well with water. After shampoo, add the juice of a lemon to half a mug of water and use it as a last rinse. Hot oil therapy is very useful for dandruff. Heat pure coconut oil or sesame seed (til) oil, or olive oil and apply the oil on the scalp with cotton wool, rubbing gently to dislodge the flakes. Then dip a towel in hot water, squeeze out the water and wrap the hot towel around the head, like a turban. Keep it on for five minutes. Repeat the hot towel wrap three or four times. This helps the hair and scalp to absorb the oil better. Repeat this three to four times and leave the oil overnight. Next morning, apply the juice of a lemon on the scalp and wash your hair after half an hour. Weekly henna treatments will help. Add four teaspoons each of lemon juice and coffee, two raw eggs, one teaspoon methi seed powder and enough tea water to the henna powder, mixing it into a thick paste. Tea water can be made by boiling used tea leaves again in enough water, cooling and straining the liquid. Apply the henna on the hair and wash off after an hour. If you do not wish to use egg, add more tea water.

Fenugreek (methi) seeds Grind one tablespoon of methi seeds coarsely and soak in two cups of cool water. Leave it overnight. Strain and use the water as a last rinse.

Neem leaves Hair damage Hair damage, caused by repeated colouring and other chemical treatments, can lead to hair loss. In such cases, the hair should be treated very gently. Avoid tying the hair tightly with rubber bands. Avoid using hair dryers and brushes. Use a wide-toothed comb. The hot towel wrap would help after hot oil treatments. Mix together one egg, two tablespoons castor oil, the juice of a lemon and one teaspoon glycerin. These ingredients should be mixed well. You can use an egg beater if you like. Massage this well on the scalp and hair. Wear a plastic shower cap and wash your hair after half an hour. Rinse well with water to remove all residue, so that they do not clog the pores.

Add two handfuls of neem leaves to four cups of hot water. Let it stand overnight. Next morning, strain the liquid and use it to rinse the hair. It relieves itching and keeps the scalp healthy and free from infections. It is also useful for dandruff. Make a paste of the soaked neem leaves and apply it on the scalp and rinse off with water after half an hour.

Oil treatments Avoid vigorous massage of the scalp, if there is hair loss. Apply warm oil on the hair and scalp. Use your finger tips to move on the scalp in small rotary movements. This helps to stimulate the scalp and improve blood circulation to the follicles and scalp surface.

Nutritional deficiencies The hair is actually fed by the nutrients in the blood stream. That is why diet is a very important aspect of hair care. Nutritional deficiencies can be a common cause of hair loss. Have a small bowl of sprouts daily and include fresh fruits, salads, leafy green vegetables, soyabean, curd and paneer in your diet. Ask your doctor to prescribe vitamin and mineral supplements.

Tattoo tales The old custom of living in colours has broadened its aspect and of late, brushing the body with colours has become a form of joy and a trend.

B

ody painting is the recent craze. Right from celebrities to common people, art has hogged the fashion era in such a way that human skin has become a unique canvas of sketches and designs. The temporary tattoos created using henna have been replaced by chemical and dye based tattoos. The quest of the modern generation to stand out in the voguish world has created a virtual frenzy and provided a suitable environment for dye related companies to sprout. Human body has been maintained as a colourful canvas in the social ball since 3000B.C. There was a time, when people explored body art as a form of tribal culture to protect themselves against evil-spirits and wild animals. Tattoos were also used as a sign of right, rank, devotion and religion. Many people took it as a ritual practise, commonly noticed during the marriage ceremony, when both the bride and groom are embalmed with natural mehndi. This trend is still alive in the cultural catalogue, especially in Asian countries. 80

Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie, who has tattooed many art and words on different parts of her body. A large black cross on her left hip and the words ‘know your rights’ just below her neck are the most popular ones. Of late, desi Bollywood too has gone freaky with tattoo art. Actors such as Sanjay Dutt, Saif Ali Khan and actresses like Riya Sen and Amrita Arora have been spotted with their current lovers’ name on their body parts. Not only Bollywood stars but many small screen actors are also seen following in

Today, tattoos and body painting are seen in every walk of life and a good number of parlours have evolved with new techniques in style and hygiene. The ‘World Body Painting Festival’ being held for the last twelve years will surely be a large platform for talented and innovative artists around the globe.

Sports especially, football, rugby, motorcycle race and cricket have been promoting the trend for a long-time now. These sports fans colour their faces according to their nationality and their moods. Time and again, many celebrities and idols have also displayed the art of body painting, which is later on followed by their fans and devotees. The most well known celebrity in this category is Malaika Arora Khan

this chic colouring trend. For instance, Arman Malik, the prominent star of Dil Mil Gaye tele serial seems to be a strong tattoo lover. The art of body painting has also provided a terrific way to the artists to convey their artistic expression to the world. The practise is found not only in metros but also in rural areas. These days, the most popular form is prevalent in 12 zodiac signs, wearer’s name and sometimes with nature stuff like birds and flowers.
