EDITOR IN CHIEF
LOUISE MAY
This year marks 38 years since I first entered the hair industry!
I’ve owned and operated three successful salons, built teams, trained many apprentices, and worked across almost every corner of the industry. From education and sales to product development and branding, I’ve been fortunate to see this world from multiple angles. Today, I’m proud to be the Editor-in-Chief of Mocha Group, overseeing Mocha Hair, Mocha Beauty, and Mocha Barber. It gives me a wide lens on the entire hair and beauty landscape, and at the core of it all, what I care about most is people.
I’ve spent the past ten years coaching and mentoring salon owners and their teams. What lights me up the most is seeing people thrive when someone simply believes in them. When they feel supported, encouraged and seen.
Lately though, I’ve been feeling something many of you can probably relate to. We keep hearing about the challenges of finding apprentices and staff. Good people are hard to come by. The next generation seems unsure, hesitant, disconnected. The question keeps coming up...where are they? Who’s coming through? And how do we keep this craft alive?
Then I walked into the 2025 EXPO4BARBERS.
What I experienced over those three days genuinely shifted something in me. The number of young barbers who showed up, who were present, engaged, and ready to go all in, was absolutely incredible. They were there to learn, to compete, to connect. I saw them asking questions, lining up for education sessions, throwing themselves into the barber battle, and soaking up every opportunity around them.
It gave me something I didn’t even realise I needed. Hope.
There’s a lot of noise out there about young people. That they’re lazy. Entitled. But honestly, I actually feel like that’s a lazy assumption.
What I saw at Expo told a different story. These young barbers are hungry, driven, creative and forwardthinking. They care deeply about their work, their community, and the culture of this industry. The truth is, they lose that spark when they are not inspired. When the people who are meant to guide them keep their wings clipped and fail to believe in them.
We have a responsibility to back them. To make space. To show them what’s possible and to let them fly.
One of the most powerful things I witnessed was the way the seasoned barbers, the OGs of the industry, were showing up for the younger ones. Sharing knowledge. Giving advice. Offering encouragement without ego. Just real, human connection. That’s the kind of mentorship that builds legacies.
There is such a vibe in barbering right now. It’s raw. Honest. Proud. There’s a street energy that’s fresh and exciting. But beneath that, there’s a depth. A culture shaped by identity, connection and respect. You can feel it. It’s not just a trend. It’s real.
Let’s keep showing up for each other. Let’s keep believing in the next generation. Let’s keep building a future where this craft not only survives, but thrives.
Until next time,

A CUT ABOVE
In an industry driven by precision, creativity, and constant evolution, it takes something truly special to stand out. Enter Rino Riccio, Head of Education at Manifesto and the newly crowned International Modern Barber of the Year at the 2025 ANZ Modern Barber Awards.
With a career shaped by a fascination with fashion and art, plus a forwardthinking approach to education and barbering, Rino’s influence is shaping not just the next generation of barbers, but the future of the industry itself. Rino’s roots in the craft run deep. Growing up in Italy in a family of hairdressers, he was already honing his skills by the age of 12, working alongside his father in the family barbershop. “That early start gave me a deep respect for traditional skills,” he reflects. “But I’ve always believed in pushing boundaries.”
By 14, he was training, and by 16, he’d already started collecting national awards in men’s hairdressing. His journey brought him to London, where he refined his technique at leading academies including Sassoon, Toni&Guy, and HOB - a diverse foundation that allowed him to blend classic craftsmanship with a fashionforward vision.
“In my 20s, I discovered the world of session styling, and everything changed,” he explains. “There’s something incredible about the buzz of a fashion show - the pace, the creativity, which brought a whole new energy to my work.”
The Manifesto Way
Today, Rino leads education at Manifesto, a progressive men’s grooming brand based in London’s Coal Drops Yard. Founded by Mikey Pearson and Corrado Tevere, Manifesto has carved out a distinctive niche in the industry: precise, technical haircuts paired with editorial-style, natural finishes. It’s a philosophy summed up in their mantra – ‘cut technically, style naturally’.
“Manifesto isn’t your everyday barbershop,” says Rino. “It’s a place where culture, creativity and technical excellence meet. We’ve created a community - not just a salon - where both team and clients feel genuinely on board with who we are and what we believe in.”
That sense of community runs deep. At Manifesto, it’s collaboration over ego; hard work and a humble approach over chasing recognition. The team’s progressive values, inclusive approach, and fashion-savvy clientele have helped grow the brand from London roots to a globally recognised name in men’s grooming.
Shaping the Future Through Education
At the heart of Manifesto’s success lies its education programme, led by Rino, and now recognised industry wide. The team picked up the UK award for Best Training at the Modern Barber Awards in 2024 and Best Team in 2025, reinforcing their place as pioneers in both craft and culture.
Meet Rino Riccio , our 2025 AMBA International Modern Barber of the Year
Rino has developed a unique teaching framework - the ADV Model (Artistic, Design, Visual), which blends technical discipline with creative exploration. “Great hair comes from instinct, structure and imagination,” he says. “Our goal is to equip barbers with tools they can apply in the salon but also inspire them to create work that feels editorial and elevated.”
He leads internal training across Manifesto, as well as international courses for Davines, where he was instrumental in creating a tailored men’s hairdressing programme. His signature course, Classic Now, teaches advanced stylists how to execute Manifesto’s clean, modern aesthetic, blending tradition with trends.
“I’m honoured to not just be keeping up with the future of barbering; I’m helping to shape it,” says Rino. “Education is how we evolve. It’s where we pass on not just skills, but values and vision.”
Beyond the Chair
Rino’s influence reaches far beyond the salon. An in-demand session stylist, he’s styled for Gucci at the Tate Modern, contributed to GQ and Man About Town, and most recently in his role of ambassador for Davines, collaborated with Jesus Oliver on the Davines SBP tour in Italy, spreading the message of ‘Youniqueness’a celebration of individuality in hairdressing.
Back in London, Manifesto recently hosted MINGLE, a networking event in collaboration with Modern Barber and Haircuts4Homeless, raising funds while bringing together the next generation of creatives in the industry. “For me, barbering isn’t just about hair, it’s about culture and selfexpression,” says Rino. “I draw inspiration from street style, film, art. It’s all about evolving, always.”
Global Recognition
Already a multiple award-winner under the Manifesto banner, picking up International Modern Barber of the Year is a pinnacle moment for Rino, and a recognition of the broader movement he’s helping to lead. His winning collection was a celebration of contrast, blending softness and structure, discipline and freedom, wearability and high-fashion edge. It captured not only technical mastery but the soul of Rino’s vision: barbering as culture, self-expression, and art.
“Winning this award means so much to me,” he says. “My collection was based on the beauty of contradiction and uniqueness. Thank you to the people who allowed me to achieve my vision and believed in the concept - Tom Connell, Jesús Oliver and of course, the Manifesto team, who always support me creatively.”
Rino’s story is one of craft elevated by creativity. As barbering continues to evolve, one thing is certain - Rino isn’t just part of the movement. He’s leading it.

EXPO4BARBERS 2025
Where the Culture Came Alive
Barbers don’t just cut hair. They create confidence. They build community. They carry culture. And for three unforgettable days in May, the 2025 EXPO4BARBERS turned the Gold Coast into the heart of it all.
From the opening buzz of the clippers on Saturday night at the Barber Battle to the final applause on Monday afternoon, this wasn’t your typical trade event. This was a movement. A moment. A meeting of minds, and generations.
The Culture Was Loud. And It Was Next Level
You could feel it the second you walked in - the energy, the edge, the love for the craft. Barbers from all walks of life showed up, bringing not only their tools but their stories, their hunger to learn, and their pride in being part of something bigger.
EXPO4BARBERS wasn’t about big brands shouting the loudest. It was about real people, real connection. Youth meeting legacy. Passion meeting purpose. Whether you were an apprentice with shaky hands or a shop owner with decades behind the chair, this was your place. And the vibe? Absolutely insane!
Education That Hit Different
Let’s talk about the real drawcard: the education. Not stiff lectures or slide decks. We’re talking raw, real, game-changing learning from some of the biggest names in the biz—Josh Lamonaca, Josh O.P, Luca Perillo, Mr Official, Tariq Howes, Jordan Tabakman, and more.
The VIP Sunday morning classes? Unreal. Picture four global educators breaking down their signature techniques live on stage, sharing the mindset behind the method, not just the “how,” but the “why.” Every section, every angle, every movement explained with intent. The kind of education you normally fly overseas for… but right here on home turf. Then there were the Education Room sessions—intimate, jam-packed, and designed to sharpen more than your fade. From Doctor Tama’s Social Media Blueprint (think strategy, not selfies) to branding, business, and mindset workshops, it wasn’t just about cutting—it was about building a future behind the chair.
Because barbering isn’t just hands. It’s head and heart too.
Young Blood Rising
What made this year special? The youth. You could see it—wide eyes, open ears. They came in ready to soak up everything. And the old school? They showed up too—not just to flex, but to guide, and to learn!
There was this beautiful passing of the torch vibe. Legends mentoring learners. OGs sharing wisdom, not gatekeeping it. On the expo floor, at the booths, you’d spot moments where a young gun would ask a question, and an industry icon would lean in and give them the real talk. That’s the stuff that changes careers.
This wasn’t just about tools and technique. It was about legacy. And that hits different when you’re standing shoulder to shoulder with the people who carved the path you’re walking.
Barber Battle Energy
Saturday night’s Barber Battle kicked off the weekend in style. Four categories. Big talent. Bigger vibes. You had Apprentices, Seniors, Old School, and New School all bringing the heat. The energy was wild. The crowd was loud. The cuts were next level.
It wasn’t about ego—it was about expression. Pure creativity on full display, judged by names that actually matter in the craft.
The EXPO4BARBERS Floor
Sunday and Monday? The expo floor didn’t stop. Live demos at every turn—BaBylissPRO, Gamma+, JRL, Depot, 4Barbers, Stylecraft, Matsui, Barber brands and so much more. Clippers buzzing, crowds gathering. You’d walk five steps and pick up five new ideas.
It wasn’t about standing at a booth awkwardly. It was immersive. You could try the tools, ask the questions, and see the products work in real time. From precise blends to powerful clippers and the latest tech, if it’s shaping the future of barbering, it was there.
Everywhere you looked: hands moving, minds ticking, people learning.
The Podcast That Gives a Voice
The “Not About Us” podcast setup, quietly became one of the most powerful parts of the expo. Even though the episodes are yet to drop, just seeing the mic set up, the headphones on, and the real conversations being recorded—it was a reminder that we’re more than barbers.
We’re people with stories. Hustlers. Healers. Artists. Survivors. And soon, those voices will be shared loud and proud.
Business, But Make It Real
The Business Panel on the main stage brought straight talk. No fluff. No boring bullet points. Just real barbers talking real business, how to keep your chair booked, build a loyal client base, and stay grounded when everything around you feels like it’s moving fast.
It was honest. It was raw, and much needed.
A Gallery of Greatness
For the first time, the AMBA Finalist Gallery brought the best of barbering photography and editorial into the expo space. Seeing these collections blown up and beautifully displayed was a moment of pause, a reminder that this craft isn’t just hands-on… it’s art.
Then Monday night rolled in with the AMBA’s at The Island in Surfers Paradise, which was an amazing night, celebrating our industry’s finest.
More Than An Expo — It Was Legacy In Motion
EXPO4BARBERS 2025 reminded us of what really matters. This industry isn’t just clippers and clean lines—it’s culture. It’s community. It’s legacy being passed from one generation to the next.
It’s the quiet nod of respect from an old-school master to a kid chasing their first fade. It’s the stories shared between cuts, the laughter on the floor, the moments that make you proud to be part of something real.
It’s barbers showing up for each other. Teaching. Learning. Lifting each other higher.
Because at the end of the day, we’re not just building businesses—we’re building a culture that runs deep. That’s what EXPO4BARBERS gave us.
Mocha Group were proud to be the official media partners of EXPO4BARBERS 2025—supporting the vision, capturing the energy, and helping share the stories that shape our industry.
NEXT STOP… NEW ZEALAND!
That’s right—EXPO4BARBERS is going international. New Location. The same electric energy.
BARBER BATTLE NZ – November 8th, 2025

BARBER BATTLE 2025

Drinks flowing, great food on offer, beats bumping, and 950+ barbers, brands, and fans locked in for a night of next-level skill, passion, and straight-up barbering madness. With Mocha Group on board as official media partner, the night—and the coverage—was locked and loaded.

WHAT THE WINNERS HAD TO SAY
We caught up with the winners post-battle to hear how they handled the pressure, what the win meant to them, what they loved about EXPO4BARBERS 2025 and what they’ve got lined up over the next 12 months.
APPRENTICE WINNER
Jaiden Acallar @barberfaydos
“Competing in the Barber Battle was an unforgettable experience. It was actually my second time entering a competition like that, and I decided to go for it because I wanted to challenge myself and see how my skills measured up. After being disappointed with my first battle in 2024, I knew I had to come back for redemption.
Walking onto the stage, I felt confident. At work during the week, I would practice this exact haircut on my clients in a similar timeframe. This was just routine to me. Once I got into the zone, everything else faded away. The experience made me more confident and motivated to keep improving my craft. What I love most about barbering is the ability to connect with people while expressing creativity. It’s more than just cutting hair—it’s about making people feel confident, building relationships, and constantly evolving. EXPO4BARBERS was a highlight for me. The energy, the talent, and the opportunity to network pushed me to think outside the box.
Over the next 12 months, I’m focused on growing at Sonder, continuing my education, and expanding my personal brand. I want to travel, experience new cultures, and bring my craft to the world.”
SENIOR WINNER
Enele Niupalavu @_enethebarber
“With over a decade behind the chair, my mission has always been about delivering high-quality cuts while mentoring the next generation. Vision Studios is more than just a barbershop—it’s a culture, a safe space, a platform for passion and professionalism. We recently relocated to a new space and continue to grow inside and out.
After an 8-year break from competitions since winning the 2017 QLD Barber Konnect Battle, I felt it was time to step back into the arena. This was about proving to myself and the industry that I’ve still got it. I wanted my kids to see what determination looks like.
What I love most is what the industry represents—especially the creativity and community. EXPO4BARBERS is one of my favourite events of the year. Over the next 12 months, I’m diving deeper into education, creating more collaborative content, and looking to team up with Johno Goodwin for workshops.”
OLD SCHOOL WINNER
Bastian Navia Aguiera @bvrberfunky
“I’ve been in the industry since 2016. My first comp experience was as a model in 2017—that’s what lit the fire. This was my second time competing in Australia and my third overall, and this time, I felt way more confident and in control.
EXPO4BARBERS was an incredible experience. The best part? Meeting people, connecting with other barbers, and repping Chilean barbers on a big stage. You can really feel how the event has grown. While I’m working through my visa process, I’m building the courses I want to launch once that’s all sorted.”
NEW SCHOOL WINNER
Keegan Walkin @k.w.barber
“I’ve been cutting for 12 months and bring a creative, modern style to the chair. Whether it’s behind the scenes or on stage, I’m all about pushing boundaries and giving back to the culture.
EXPO4BARBERS was unreal. It was my first big event, and I even did live demos at the JRL cutting booth—super cool connecting with new and old faces.
The next 12 months? Growth. I’ll be at Hair Fest in Sydney, taking colour and cutting classes, dropping mini education pieces, and working hard on my 2026 collections for national and international comps.”
THE JOSH LAMONACA MVB (MOST VALUABLE BARBER) WINNER
Cooper Odonnel @2_fadedd_
“When people hear ‘barber battle,’ they think chaos, pressure, and crazy good cuts—and that’s exactly what it was. The energy was wild, and the talent was top tier. I’d been grinding hard leading up to it, and winning the Josh Lamonaca MVB title was massive. It proved to me that the hustle is worth it.
Barbering is all about growth. The styles change, the techniques evolve, and I love being part of that. But the real fuel? The people. Every client brings something new, and that connection is everything.
What stood out most at EXPO4BARBERS was the community. It wasn’t just about the gear or the stages—it was the conversations, the tips, the shared respect. That’s what made it so special.
Looking ahead, I’m refining my skills, aiming to open my own shop, and build a space that’s more than just cuts—a place for connection, good vibes, and real experiences.”
THE WRAP UP
Barber Battle 2025 didn’t just open the Expo—it set the bar. From the moment clippers fired up to the final trophy lift, one thing was clear: barbering in Australia and New Zealand is thriving.
No gimmicks. Just respect for the craft, love for the culture, and a community that backs each other every step of the way.

Inspire Brands
As a business it’s easy to take for granted the customers that continually support you day in day out. It’s not often that they are recognised for their support. Inspire Brands certainly don’t expect their customers to support them unless they provide them with the services they require and even the ones they don’t, and that is why they go out of their way to make sure that the following are true when dealing with them;
• High Quality Products
• A Good Range of products catering to both Hairdressers and Barbers
• Affordable and usual below market pricing
• Easy Order processing
• High Level of Communication
But their main priority is respect for each other. With their Gamma+, Fascinelle and Salon & Co ranges, they have taken the approach of ONLY dealing with Wholesalers and Distributors across Australia and New Zealand, this allows us to be focussed and deliver on not only their needs but that of their customers also. It would have been nice to highlight all their customers as each have a differentiating element to them, we were not able to do this in the space we have, therefore we have taken one from a few states and given them the opportunity of talking about their relationship with each other.
A word from some of their customers:
“Working with Inspire Brands has been a consistently positive experience for over a decade. Our relationship spans more than 10 years, built on trust, reliability, and genuine partnership. Their team is always friendly, approachable, and incredibly easy to work with—making every interaction seamless. The level of service they provide is second to none. Corey (Sales Manager) is always helpful, personable, and a true pleasure to deal with. It’s this combination of professionalism and warmth that has made Inspire Brands such a valued and long-standing partner in our business journey.”

Jimmy O’Brien, AKA Jimmy Rod
AMBA 2025 Special Recognition and Hall of Fame Recipients!
At the 2025 AMBA gala Night, we honoured 2 very special individuals, both to a standing ovation form the delighted guests.
First up was the 2025 Special Recognition Award announced by Louise May, Editor in Chief of Mocha group.
As a nominated award, the recipient is chosen by the industry, and ultimately decided upon by the mocha group.
“Every now and then, someone comes along who doesn’t just change an industry, they quietly reshape it from the inside out,” said Louise.
Our recipient, Jimmy O’Brien, AKA Jimmy Rod, was recognise sa true original. Someone who, from a single chair and a big vision, built something that would go on to shape a generation of barbers, and spark a ripple effect that’s still growing strong.
It all started in 2003. One location. One idea: to take the essence of the traditional barbershop and bring it into a new era.
From that one shop, a name emerged that would go on to become synonymous with men’s grooming. With multiple shops, this brand has become trusted by thousands of everyday men not to mention elite athletes through partnerships with teams like the Brisbane Broncos and Brisbane Heat. This visionary has built more than a business; he has built careers and his passion has seen him train and mentor an incredible number of apprentices, giving young barbers not just a job, but a future.
Jimmy is not someone who seeks the spotlight. He just shows up consistently, passionately, and with an unwavering belief in what’s possible when you back people, back education, and back yourself. A well deserved accolade.
The final surprise of the night, was the announcement of the 2025 AMBA Hall of Fame Recipient, Clare Castles.
Art Director of Mocha Group, Kellie Woodhead did the honours to this true Pioneer when it comes to the Men’s Grooming movement in Australia.
As a beauty therapist Clare was hard at work in her salon in Sydney’s inner-west, also handling corporate grooming gigs on the side, where she would teach new Qantas flight attendants how to meet the airline’s strict uniform and personal presentation standards.
As an International Skincare Lecturer, she spoke on behalf of some of the largest global companies but always had a dream to solve men’s skincare & haircare problems naturally.
She had also launched one of the first Private Registered Training Organisations in NSW for Hair and Beauty. In December 1999, however, everything changed. As a single mum, trailblazer and entrepreneur she teamed up with a chemist so she could bring her unique dream to life and officially launched the first men’s grooming e-commerce brand in Australia.
To this day, she remains dedicated to leaving a legacy of men’s skincare and haircare products, made with a combination of naturally derived and certified organic native Australian botanicals.
Made entirely in Sydney, Australia, and backed by scientific research as well as over 40,000 years of wisdom from Indigenous Australians, the unique properties of native botanicals have been thoughtfully infused into all her products.
She was instrumental in launching one of the first online hair and beauty stores in Australia and subsequently partnered with Austrade, distributing throughout France, the United States and Canada.
She has always stayed true to her core belief of solving men’s grooming problems naturally and is the first to lend a hand to anyone within the industry, generously sharing her wealth of knowledge.
Clare is an inspiration to anyone setting out in any business who has an idea, and is proof that dreams do come true with hard work and determination. The 2025 AMBA inductee into the Hall of Fame is the founder of VITAMAN, Clare Castles

STATE OF MIND
EMPIRE
By Louise May
In 2020, at just 24 years old, Damien Lai made the bold decision to open a barbershop, without any experience in barbering or business. Motivated by the promise of financial freedom and a belief that the industry could offer flexibility and security, he went all in. “I thought running a barbershop business would be a piece of cake and that it would allow me to work from anywhere in the world—oh how I was wrong!”
After six years making 50+ calls a day selling health insurance, discussing dental limits and Specsavers claims, he knew he wanted more. Amid the uncertainty of the COVID pandemic, Damien asked himself a simple but powerful question: what is something people will always need, regardless of what the world is going through? The answer led to the birth of Empire Barbershop.
Fast forward to today, and Empire has been named the 2025 AMBA Modern Barber Business of the Year, with Damien also crowned 2025 AMBA Best Barber Educator of the Year (Individual)—a testament to the vision, hustle, and heart behind the brand.
Louise May chats with Damien about barbering, business, and building a legacy.
What was it about cutting hair that made you fall in love with the craft once you began learning it yourself?
I never thought it would be a trade I would have fallen in love with. I was never artistic or creative, I could draw stick figures at best, so I never thought I’d be good at it. But once I started learning, I realised barbering was far beyond just cutting hair. It’s about shared experiences with clients and colleagues. It’s about serving a purpose greater than yourself. Being a barber helped me mature mentally and brought out a creative side I never knew I had. I loved it so much I started investing heavily in both my skills and the business side of barbering, learning from some of the best in the world.
Why do you believe it’s so important to focus on the human element of barbering, not just the technical side?
While technical ability and fundamentals are essential, the human element plays the most crucial role, more than 80%, I’d say. Let’s face it, 99% of people don’t have the “barber’s eye”. The detail work is mostly noticed by other barbers. What the general public values is meaningful connection. Trust, a safe space, and genuine conversation— that’s what keeps people coming back.
It’s those relationships that build loyalty and long-term success. People don’t return just for a haircut—they return for how they felt walking out of your chair. A barbershop chair is where burdens get lighter, minds get clearer, and people walk out feeling brand new.
What motivates you every day to keep pushing boundaries in both your barbershop and School of Barbers?
My motivation comes from purpose and mission. I want to create a legacy—something impactful enough to shift the industry. Not just for my students, but for anyone who’s ever felt lost or stuck.
In my first year running Empire, I had nothing. I had to live in the shop because I couldn’t afford rent or food. I’d collect coins dropped by customers to buy frozen lasagne. But I kept showing up. That pain and struggle became my motivation.
I didn’t have a guide or a handout. I built this from the dirt. Now, I want to show others that they can do the same—no matter how dark it gets.
You’ve created a global education platform. What gaps in barbering education were you trying to fill when you launched School of Barbers?
My co-founder Luisa Landolfo and I created School of Barbers after we struggled to find barbers with the fundamentals we needed for Empire. We interviewed hundreds—many had completed barbering schools, yet couldn’t do a fade!
We couldn’t understand why students spent 12–18 months in training and still lacked basic skills. Turns out, fading wasn’t even in the curriculum as a core or elective unit. So, we decided: if we couldn’t find the barbers we needed, we’d create them.
If there was one thing you could change about the barbering industry today, what would it be and why?
If I could change one thing in Australia’s barbering scene, it would be the mentality and divide in the community. Overseas, I’ve seen real camaraderie. Barbers openly share knowledge and support one another.
Here, ego gets in the way. Too many barbers think they already know everything. That mindset causes stagnation. They blame customers instead of adapting. If we could foster more humility and collaboration, we’d all grow together.
How do you define success as an educator, and how do your students’ outcomes reflect that?
For me, success isn’t just about teaching someone how to cut hair. It’s about transformation. We aim to develop humility, discipline, and consistency. Traits that go beyond barbering, these are life skills. I see it in my students: those who lacked confidence are now shop leaders. Those who once doubted
themselves are now mentoring others. That’s what success looks like raising the bar not just in skills, but in self-belief.
What role do empathy and community play in shaping the next generation of barbers?
Empathy and community are pillars for a lasting industry. Anyone can learn to fade, but not everyone can sit with a client and truly understand them. That’s the difference.
Mental health is a huge issue, especially for men. Barbers often become the first point of contact for someone struggling silently. A simple “How’s your week been?” can be a lifeline. That’s why we need to build barbers who listen and care. We’re not just grooming hair; we’re holding space for human connection.
You’ve worked with barbers at every level—from newcomers to veterans. What’s one piece of advice you find yourself repeating most often?
“Your fade isn’t what’s holding you back—your ego is.”
It’s not about technique, it’s about mindset. The moment you think you’ve got nothing left to learn, you start falling behind.
I’ve seen barbers with 10+ years’ experience who won’t take feedback. That’s ego in disguise. On the other hand, I’ve seen complete beginners grow rapidly because they stay open, curious, and coachable.
The best barbers never stop learning.
What’s your personal “why”—the deeper reason you continue to teach, lead, and contribute so much to the industry?
My vision has always been to influence. Whether through barbering or something else, I’ve always wanted to inspire change—like Tony Robbins or Gary Vee.
Barbering became the vehicle for that. It gave me a platform to lead and create real impact.
Since I was 18, I’ve donated to communities in Kenya every year, supporting youth education, clean water, and health care.
We’ve also raised over $7,000 for mental health through charity days at Empire.
This isn’t about recognition. It’s about being who I said I wanted to be—and helping others do the same.
What is on the agenda for the next 12 months?
At School of Barbers, we’re expanding our education reach across multiple locations in Australia. We’re building a movement that delivers real results with real purpose—something most schools can’t offer.
At Empire Barbershop, we’re scaling with intent. Our vision is to become a national brand, recognised for our skill, service, culture, and leadership. Whether we have one location or ten, our standards won’t change.
We’re creating a place where barbers want to work—and where clients want to return.

LEEN BERTUS
Rob picked up a pair of clippers when he was 14 years old to screw up his first haircut in a long line of many screwed up haircuts to come. Always believing in the punk D.I.Y. ethos and the school of hard knocks that teaches that class, he knew Barbering was his passion once those first hairs hit the floor of his parent’s home. Two decades later, after a drug and alcohol fueled journey along the road of wreck ‘n’ ruin, Rob and his better half, Leen - The Bearded Bastard, opened a safe haven for the wicked and weary that became known as Schorem - The Holy Ashtray. His quest for the perfect classic haircut became more than just an orgasmic nightmare as they signed the contract with that foul demon called The Lard…
On a dark and stormy night, the Bearded Bastard was made; “made” you ask? Yes, it’s time to finally come out with the truth, Leen wasn’t born the traditional way, but built out of snips, snails, puppy-dog tails, left over pieces of meat and an ancient brain his grandfather bought from a witch doctor in Honolulu. Born and raised in the south of the Lowlands, Leen picked up his first pair of clippers at 14 while working a holiday job and found that his lack of social skills left plenty of room for the technical side of Barbering. A famous barber from the silver screen once said, “Me? I don’t talk much, I just cut the hair, and that’s what he has done ever since. One day, that rotten foul-breathed renegade Bertus walked in with nothing but his scurvy dog, hot girlfriend, red mohawk and 2 dollars in his pocket asking for a job and a cup of coffee, the rest is history, he just lost the mohawk.
From Burnout to Barbering: The Unlikely Journey of
BENJAMIN CUCANIC
By Louise May
Benjamin Cucanic never set out to become a barber. At 17, his first job was at KFC, and within six months, he’d climbed into management. After finishing school, he gave university a miss and kept working, eventually stepping down to a supervisor role to explore other careers. He tried construction, sales, warehousing, and even earned a finance and mortgage broking licence. But nothing stuck.
At one point, he was working two full-time jobs – warehousing from 3am to 2pm, then straight to KFC from 3pm to 11pm. The money was good, but the toll was brutal. “I’d get a haircut every couple of weeks and literally fall asleep in the chair,” he recalls. One day, his barber asked why he was pushing so hard. “Have you ever thought about barbering?” It sounded wild, but it stuck.
A spontaneous haircut on his dad lit a spark. He enrolled in barbering school and made it his mission to be the best. What started as a hustle for money became a purpose. Now, Benjamin is driven by connection, mentoring, and using the craft that changed his life to help others find theirs.
Louise May, Editor of Mocha Barber Magazine, chats with Benjamin about his journey, purpose, and what it means to lead with heart.
Launching Opulence Barbershop as an appointment-only, high-end home studio was a bold move. What drove that decision, and how did it challenge traditional ideas about what a barbershop should be?
Launching Opulence Barbershop as a high-end, appointment-only home studio wasn’t part of the original plan, it came out of necessity. When COVID hit, everything changed. I was cutting from my garage part-time, but as restrictions tightened and my clientele kept growing, I knew I had to pivot. I moved the setup inside my house and turned it into a full-time, private suite. It was a bold move because it challenged the norm. Most people still expected a barbershop to have a shopfront, walk-ins, loud music, and foot traffic. I flipped that. I focused on creating a private, one-on-one VIP experience that felt more like a retreat than a barbershop. Clients didn’t just come for a haircut, they came for connection, comfort, and a reset. It also meant stepping up every part of the experience: the service, the atmosphere, the professionalism, the trust. Every detail had to feel premium. And honestly, it worked better than I ever imagined. People didn’t care where the chair was, they cared how they felt in it.
You’ve created a space where conversations about men’s mental health are just as important as the haircut. What made you want to build that kind of environment – and how have your clients responded?
I’ve always believed that the haircut is just the surface, the real value is in the conversation. I wanted Opulence Barbershop to be more than just a place to look good. I wanted it to be a space where people could feel safe, be heard, and drop the pressure they carry, even for a little while.
The focus on mental health came from my own experience, burning out doing 80-hour weeks, chasing purpose, and trying to figure out who I was. I know what it’s like to feel lost. That’s why I created a space where it’s okay to talk.
Sometimes that means after-hours trims at midnight, not for money, but because someone needs to talk, have a drink, and feel like they’re not alone. I’ve had clients sit just to vent. The response has been incredible. People tell me, “This is the only place I can talk about this stuff.” That tells me everything.
Your work in rural Victoria and with Youth Justice is powerful. What motivates you to show up for these communities?
Barbering has never just been about business; it’s always been about service and impact. I know what it’s like to feel stuck or like the odds are against you. That’s why rural outreach and my short time with Youth Justice mean so much to me.
Once a month, I travel to rural Victoria to give free haircuts to farmers. For some, it’s their first proper cut in months. It’s about making them feel seen and heard. You realise how powerful a simple act of service is when someone says, “Thanks mate, I needed that more than you know.”
The same goes for Youth Justice. These young men have made mistakes, but they’re looking for a way forward. If barbering can be that path, I’ll help however I can. Shout out to Michelle Towers for doing God’s work week in and out.
From paddocks in rural Victoria to stages at industry expos, your work spans both ends of the spectrum. What have these vastly different experiences taught you about your purpose as a barber?
Cutting hair in a paddock and speaking on stage might seem worlds apart, but both taught me the same thing: barbering is about connection.
In rural Victoria, it’s about showing up, offering care, and reminding people they matter. On stage at events like Expo4Barbers or Hair Expo, it’s about inspiring and giving back to the industry. Both experiences ground me.
Whether in a shed, on a stage, or in my studio at midnight, I’m exactly where I’m meant to be. That’s my purpose: to use this craft to serve, uplift, and educate.
You’ve trained with names like Jordan Tabakman and Sophie Stay Gold, and now you’re an educator yourself with Gamma+. How has education shaped your growth – and why Gamma+?
Education has shaped everything about who I am – as a barber, mentor, and man. I’ve been lucky to learn from the best: Jordan Tabakman, Sophie Stay Gold, Josh OP, and many more. But it started with Adrian Gentile, owner of Workshop Barbers. He and others shaped my growth.
A mentor once called me a chameleon. I adapt, connect, and meet people where they’re at. Whether on stage, in a studio, or mentoring one-on-one, I keep it real and help others level up.
As for Gamma+, I didn’t chase it. Jordan introduced me to the brand after a Gamma+ & Level 3 event. I received some clippers and was blown away. I’d used other professional brands, but Gamma+ just hit different. Since then, they’ve given me a platform, experiences, and friendships I’ll carry for life.
As someone who’s competed, MCed, educated, and mentored – what have been your most uncomfortable but transformative moments?
The most uncomfortable moments have been the most transformative. I still cringe seeing myself talk on the big screen. Even after everything, I still think, “Do I belong here?”
I’ve competed many times but never won. After the latest Barber Battle at Expo, I asked for feedback. One person said, “You absolutely killed the haircut. You’re a Gamma+ educator, a two-time AMBA finalist. Stop searching for validation, you’ve already made it. Just keep being you.” That hit hard. It was what I needed. Even now, I feel nervous every time I step up. But I live by this quote: “The magic you’re looking for is in the work you’re avoiding.” While competing next to Bastian, who won, I saw him stressing mid-cut. I said, “Bro, smile, everyone’s watching.” He smiled back and said, “Thanks bro.” Those moments remind me why I love this industry. It’s not about trophies; it’s about people and growth.
You’ve spoken about staying humble as one of your greatest strengths. How do you keep that mindset while continuing to grow and lead?
For me, humility isn’t a mindset, it’s nonnegotiable. I love the quote: “Walk with kings, nor lose the common touch.”
I didn’t grow up with money or fame. I’ve worked for everything, and that keeps me grounded. I still ask for feedback, even as a Gamma+ educator and AMBA finalist. Titles don’t make you better, they give you responsibility to lead with integrity. Once you lose touch with where you came from, you lose what made you great. I stay close to the community, serve the people, and remember: no crown lasts forever, but character does.
With social media playing a big role in your growth, how do you stay authentic in a space that often values perfection over realness?
Social media’s been big for me, but chasing perfection isn’t it. I always say: “Practice doesn’t make perfect. Practice makes improvement.” Perfection is an illusion. What connects people is authenticity.
There’s pressure online to present a polished version of yourself. But I value realness – real stories, people, connection. I’ve caught myself trying to move like Jordan or Josh OP, but it didn’t feel right. The more I tried to be someone else, the more I lost myself. Now, I stay true to my voice. Not everyone will vibe with it, and that’s fine. But the ones who do? That’s your tribe. Authenticity over perfection. Every time.
If you could sit down with your younger self in the garage – nervous, determined, and still finding your way – what would you say?
I’d say: “You’ve made it this far, and you’re still breathing. What’s the worst that could happen?” I’d tell him to trust the process. Keep showing up. Stop chasing perfection and chase progress. Stay humble, lead with heart. That’s what will set you apart.
And when doubt creeps in? “One day, people will know your story. And they’ll understand it was never for nothing.” The long nights, the early mornings, the losses and wins – it’s all building something that matters.
Final Thoughts
People see the wins and highlights on social media, but there’s always more beneath. Working alone in a private studio can be tough. Some days it’s hard to stay motivated, but I’ve learned that accountability starts within.
Barbering’s taught me that everyone carries something. You never know what’s happening beneath the surface. That’s why I lead with kindness, humility, and empathy.
To every barber feeling like they’re in the dark: don’t forget who you are and why you started. There’s purpose in your path, even when it doesn’t feel like it.
This is just the beginning. Huge thanks to Linda and The Mocha Group for this platform to share my story. Truly blessed. Thank you, for seeing me.

FROM GEARS TO SHEARS
By Louise May
When it comes to passion-fuelled purpose, Jake Hart lives and breathes it. From a career in earthmoving to becoming one of the Sunshine Coast’s most respected barbers, Jake’s journey is as raw and real as they come.
With over a decade behind the chair, he’s carved out not just a career but a culture—one that beats at the heart of his brand, Have Heart Barbershop.
Editor of Mocha Barber, Louise May, chats with Jake about where it all began, the vision behind his unique space, the brands that shaped his path, and why barbering isn’t just what he does—it’s who he is.
Tell us about you and your journey in the barbering industry and how did it all begin?
It’s hard to believe it’s been over 11 years since I made the leap into my barbering career, and it came at just the right time. I was wrapping up my time in the earthmoving industry, searching for something new, something real. A friend of mine was working at a salon that just happened to be looking for a first-year apprentice and at the moment he suggested I apply, and it all just clicked. From gears to shears, that was it, I was all in and it turned into my whole life, I’ve never looked back.
What inspired barbering as a career choice?
The inspiration was always there, barbering had always caught my eye as I was always so heavily involved in the tattoo industry, something about it just felt right. But it wasn’t until I actually started my apprenticeship that I realised this wasn’t just a curiosity, it was a way of life a calling if you’d say.
It didn’t take long before I knew, this is who I am, I’m a barber, first and foremost, It’s not just a job, it’s a lifestyle, a passion, and a part of my identity. Looking back, there was never really another path. Barbering was always in the picture, I’m just lucky I had the chance to chase
Can you tell us about your vision and creating Have Heart?
Over the years, I paid close attention to the shops I worked in, the people who sat in my chair, and the sense of community that naturally grew around it. I knew exactly what I wanted my own space to feel like. The challenge wasn’t the vision it was bringing it to life. At the time, I’d never seen a barbershop that matched what I had in mind. The art, the music, the atmosphere, the fashion it was all purely an extension of me and my take on what the barbering lifestyle truly is.
Have Heart isn’t just a barbershop It’s a reflection of the culture, the craft, and the connections that matter to me. I’m proud of what we’ve built, and honestly, there’s not a single day I don’t feel fired up to walk through those doors.
What makes Have Heart unique to other Barbershops in your area?
Have Heart brought something different to the Sunshine Coast a barbershop rooted in the rich traditions of barbering, but with a fresh energy and modern edge. From day one, we weren’t just another shop we were building a brand. What really set us apart was how we showcased our craft. We created a space where the community could connect with our technical approach to cutting, and we made sure to put that on full display. We pushed hard on social media, showing our skills, our style, and what made us unique. We weren’t following trends we were setting our own standard. I poured everything I had into this shop heart, soul, and vision to build an atmosphere that feels completely different from anything else around. Have Heart isn’t just a barbershop. It’s a family.
What challenges have you been through during your business journey and how have you overcome them?
Have Heart opened during one of the wildest times imaginable right in the middle of COVID. Looking back, it was kind of insane. While everything was on pause, I was behind the scenes, grinding through lockdown. As soon as it lifted, we hit the ground running long days, late nights, fitting out the space and opening the doors just a week later. The hustle was real. The first year brought its fair share of chaos. Construction was non-stop all around us, but we kept pushing. Despite the noise we stayed locked in and started building something real. We didn’t just open a shop we built a crew of like-minded barbers who shared the same passion and vision. That’s when Have Heart really started to take shape.
Can you tell us about your ambassador roles, why did you choose to work with these brands, and what does your role entail?
When it comes to this side of barbering, I honestly feel blessed. This one hits a little different for me I’m a bit sentimental about it. From early on, there were only two companies I ever truly dreamed of being associated with. To me, they represent everything I believe barbering is and should be. I’ve always tried to keep things as real and authentic as possible, so the brands I align with have to mean something. These two absolutely do.
First up: Wahl Professional. I’ve been working with Wahl for three years now, and for the past 12 months, I’ve been part of their national education team. That still feels surreal. I remember my first ever education event, Wahl was launching the cordless Super Taper and now here I am, standing on the other side, representing the brand in that same way. It’s humbling, and honestly, a full-circle moment I’ll never take for granted. And then there’s Reuzel, the kings of male grooming. One of my biggest inspirations in barbering is The Bloody Butcher. From the way he cuts to his overall style and finish, I’m all in. Right now, I’m deep in the Scumbassador journey, which is surreal to me, I’m really looking forward to getting out there and working with the best men’s hair product in the world. Through both brands, I get to deliver education, look & learns, hands on sessions, and everything in between. It’s a platform I don’t take lightly. Being able to share what I know, what I love, with passionate like-minded barbers, that’s the dream.
Tell us about Jake outside of Barbering, who is he? What is he passionate about?
Outside the barbershop, life doesn’t slow down much, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I’ve got two young daughters who are my absolute world. They’ve brought a whole new energy into my life got me outside more, back on a skateboard, and just embracing that youthful side again. My oldest has really taken to it, so now we’re out there skating together, which is pretty special.
If I’m not cutting hair or with the girls, you’ll probably find me drawing, painting, digging through records, or at a live show. Music’s a big part of my life listening to it, collecting it, and just living in it.
I feel lucky, honestly. My world’s shaped around the things I love most family, art, music, skateboarding and I get to stay inspired every day because of it.
What do you love about the industry?
Honestly, the energy in this industry is unmatched. I’ve never come across a community so full of genuinely good people, barbering has introduced me to some of the kindest, most inspiring individuals I’ve ever met. The culture is always evolving. There’s inspiration everywhere you look, different styles, techniques, and perspectives constantly pushing the craft forward. I’ve got nothing but respect for where the industry is at and where it’s heading. It’s all love from me.
If you could change one thing about the industry, what would it be?
There isn’t a single thing I’d change about this industry. It’s grown in such a positive, powerful way, and the path it’s on only points upward. One of the great upcoming things, seeing more and more female barbers stepping up and making their mark. It’s adding fresh energy, perspectives, and pushing the culture forward like never before.
I’m proud to be part of something that’s evolving with so much heart and authenticity. Honestly, I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
What’s on the agenda over the next 12 months for Have Heart and You?
The next 12 months are set to be huge for Have Heart. Our team is growing, and we’re constantly pushing forward, always learning, attending workshops, levelling up our skills and staying fired up in the industry to keep ourselves motivated to break new ground on what our shop can be.
My role is evolving too, and I’m ready to grow right alongside it. The road ahead is packed with education and travel, and I’m genuinely excited for every minute of it. There’s nothing better than getting out there, connecting with barbers, whether they’re fresh faces or longtime barbers and sharing the passion that drives me.
I’m proud of this community, and I can’t wait to keep representing it, inspiring it, and growing with it every step of the way.

TOMMY GUN’S EXPERIENCE
A look behind the scenes at the culture, systems, and strategy driving Tommy Gun’s success.
By Louise May
Tommy Gun’s was founded in 2009 in Alberta, Canada, and reached Australian shores in 2015. Tommy Gun’s is on a mission to redefine the traditional barbershop experience. They quickly became known for blending old-school grooming values with modern convenience and style.
The brand expanded rapidly across Canada and Australia, where it’s been embraced for its distinctive customer service, signature services, and tech-driven approach. Over time, Tommy Gun’s has evolved into a globally recognised name, with a focus on delivering epic confidence to every customer through an elevated grooming experience.
Editor Louise May chats with Luke Wightman, Managing Director and Owner of 6 Tommy Gun’s locations, to uncover what sets the brand apart—from the signature guest experience to their forward-thinking education approach—and how their partnership with Shortcuts salon software continues to power their national growth and client satisfaction.
How many stores are there? And how many are currently operating across Australia, and are there plans for further expansion in the future?
Tommy Gun’s has over 90 stores across Canada, Australia, America and New Zealand. There are 13 Australian stores (soon to be 14), and 2 in New Zealand.
Expansion plans for the Australian market are in full swing, with the newest site set to open on May 24th!
The brand’s ongoing expansion strategy includes reaching new urban hubs and regional areas, with a clear focus on maintaining service quality and a consistent customer journey. Continued growth, both nationally and globally, remains a core part of Tommy Gun’s longterm vision.
What makes the in-store experience at Tommy Gun’s unique compared to other barbershops?
The Tommy Gun’s experience is designed to be elevated from the moment a guest walks in. Customers are greeted with digital selfcheck-in kiosks, complimentary beverages, in-mirror TVs with remotes and hot towel finishes—all included with each service. The barbers are highly trained and supported, and every part of the visit is tailored to make the customer feel valued and confident! It’s this combination of premium service, convenience, and atmosphere that sets us apart.
How does Tommy Gun’s approach education and upskilling for barbers across your network?
Education is central to our success. Tommy Gun’s has a dedicated National Barber Educator who oversees technical training, product knowledge, and Head Barber workshops. Barbers receive ongoing support and are equipped with the latest techniques in cutting, styling, and grooming. We believe that by investing in our team, we’re investing in the customer experience, and we ensure that learning is part of every career stage within the business.
Are there in-house education programs or external training partnerships that help develop your team’s skills?
Yes, Tommy Gun’s offers comprehensive inhouse education programs led by internal educators. These programs cover everything from core barbering techniques to advanced styling and retail strategies. While we prioritise internal development to maintain consistency across the brand, we also stay informed of industry trends and bring in external educators for specialised training. We partner up with the industry’s leading brands, developing strong relationships with them over the years and are frequently hosting training sessions with them!
Why did Tommy Gun’s choose Shortcuts salon software for the business, and how has it supported the operational goals?
Tommy Gun’s chose Shortcuts because it aligns perfectly with our operational needs and growth model. The platform supports multi-location management, staff scheduling, inventory control, and customer relationship tools—all in one system. It gives us the flexibility and efficiency we need to maintain consistency across all stores while delivering a top-tier customer experience.
What specific features of Shortcuts salon software have been most beneficial in managing daily operations across the barbershop locations?
Shortcuts’ POS integration, digital check-in capabilities, and real-time reporting are some of the most valuable features. These tools enable our team to manage queues effectively, track customer flow, monitor performance, and ensure the shop floor runs smoothly. For management, the ability to access KPIs and operational data from anywhere has made a huge impact in decision-making and day-to-day efficiency.
How does the integration of Shortcuts software enhance the client experience, particularly regarding appointment scheduling and check-ins?
While Tommy Gun’s operates on a walk-in model rather than traditional appointments, the Shortcuts software is pivotal in managing check-ins and the queue. Customers can check in at-store with our Front of House team, via touchscreen kiosks or remotely through our app, which provides estimated wait times.
The Shortcuts software allows our Front of House teams to manage and balance the queue of customers with precision to maximise efficiency. This streamlined process not only enhances convenience but also reduces wait times and improves overall satisfaction.
How do the marketing features within Shortcuts, such as automated emails and promotions, contribute to client retention and engagement? Shortcuts allows us to get to know our customers better! Whether it be their regular barber, how often they visit and even what drink they like! All these little data points give us the ability to improve the customer experience and
Shortcuts’ marketing suite allows us to stay connected with our customers through automated emails, birthday offers, and service reminders. These personalised communications help drive repeat visits, strengthen brand loyalty, and encourage upsells. Promotions can be tailored and tracked easily, enabling us to respond quickly to customer behaviour and market trends, ultimately boosting client retention.

DEPOT IKONS
Style Competition 2025
DEPOT Male Tools & Co AU launched its first-ever national barbering competition earlier this year, unveiling the DEPOT IKONS Style Competition as a way to celebrate the talent and technical skill within the Australian barbering industry.
Entrants from across the country were invited to submit three images showcasing their best work, combining modern styling with traditional barbering techniques. From these entries, five finalists were selected to compete live on stage at the 2025 EXPO4BARBERS.
Hosted by DEPOT Ambassadors Suzi O’Brien and Ben Kane, and judged on stage by Josh O.P, Fraser Forsey and Gareth Philpott, the live competition gave each finalist the chance to cut and style in real time, with a supportive crowd and high expectations. At stake was more than just the title — the winner would receive an exclusive trip to Italy, connecting them with the birthplace of DEPOT and its global barbering network.
In its inaugural year, the competition proved to be more than a contest — it became a platform for connection, growth, and recognition. While all five finalists brought something unique to the stage, it was Gianni Sollazzo from ESQ. Male Grooming who took out the title of DEPOT IKONS Champion 2025.
Gianni started in the industry at just 11 years old, helping with daily operations in the shop. By 13, he was already learning basic skills and gaining hands-on experience. He worked across several barbershops to broaden his skillset before starting his formal apprenticeship under Mark Rabone at age 15. Since completing his Certificate III in Barbering in 2023, Ginanni has stepped into a Senior Stylist role and had the opportunity to compete and win in the AMBA Junior category in 2023, and winner of 2025 AMBA Classic Barber of the Year. This journey has been about growth, passion, and always working to improve his skills.
WE SPOKE TO GIANNI ABOUT HIS WIN …
Why enter DEPOT IKONS?
My motivation came from a desire to challenge myself creatively and professionally. As someone who has been inspired by mentors in the industry, I saw DEPOT IKONS as the perfect platform to push my limits, showcase my growth, and learn from others.
How was the photo entry process?
Submitting the photographic work was an easy process for me. I captured three angles front, side, and back to show the full shape, structure, and detail of the cut. In my submission I also included a written breakdown of the techniques and products I used, highlighting the intent behind each styling choice. I felt a mix of pride and nerves, knowing this was the first impression of my work. The process reminded me how much thought and effort go into every single style we create.
What was it like cutting live on stage?
Heading into the final, I felt a mix of nerves and excitement. The pressure of performing live sharpened my focus and reminded me why I love this craft, because it keeps pushing me. It taught me how important preparation, calmness under pressure, and confidence in your skills are. Once I was on stage the nerves faded as I saw my team in the crowd cheering me on. I had prepared for this cut, was confident in my skill, and had the best tools on hand to get the job done.
Your go-to DEPOT Male Tools product and why?
My go-to product is No. 202 Leave-In Conditioner. It’s a staple in my toolkit. It delivers moisture, manageability, and protection all in one step. Whether I’m prepping a classic cut or working on more textured styles, this product helps soften the hair and makes it easier to control, without any heaviness or buildup. I also love how it enhances the hair’s natural look while still offering subtle support for styling. It’s reliable, versatile, and works across a range of hair types, perfect for maintaining hair health while elevating the overall finish of each cut.
Your take on DEPOT as a brand?
My respect for DEPOT has only grown. Being part of this event showed me how committed the brand is to innovation, education, and community. Depot not just a product line, they’re actively uplifting barbers and helping push the industry forward. Their events and support have created opportunities I never imagined possible, from international networking to professional development.
And finally, how does it feel to be the IKONS winner?
There are honestly no words for how I feel after winning the competition. I had so many mixed emotions leading up to the event, from being extremely nervous to then feeling excited on stage, as all of the nerves disappeared the moment I started cutting. The prize from this event still leaves me speechless. I never thought I’d have the chance to fly to Milan, Italy, all expenses paid and be in a room full of incredibly talented barbers from all over the world. The opportunity to even be in that room, let alone learn their skills and techniques, is mind-blowing to me. I couldn’t be more thankful. Depot did a terrific job putting on an amazing event with a massive prize.

Here’s what the finalists had to say about the competition, their favourite Depot Products and thoughts on the Depot brand.
“I’d never entered a comp before and wanted to challenge myself — it really sparked something in me. Shooting it on my phone made it super accessible. The photo entry was a nice change from everyday content; I focused on movement and bringing the cut to life. I was absolutely bricking it before cutting live and lost a few nights’ sleep, but once I trusted my skills, I knew I could handle it. My go-to is the DEPOT NO. 310 Curl Cream - it adds moisture, hold, shape, and shine. DEPOT’s stand at Expo4Barbers was buzzing, and the brand’s quality and style speak for themselves.”
BEN WELLS – TOGNINIS
@benwells.cuts
“With four boys of my own, I wanted to be part of where men’s styling is going — it’s creative, expressive, and I wanted to show my boys that taking pride in your appearance is a good thing. I’ve loved photographic work since my apprenticeship and have been lucky to learn from some of the best, including Ian Golding. Being the only female finalist was nerve-wracking, but the support from the DEPOT team and the other finalists helped me step up and own my space. It reminded me that belonging isn’t about fitting in — it’s about showing up as you are. I’m obsessed with the DEPOT No. 310 Curl Designer it gives control, definition, and a polished finish without frizz. DEPOT really respects the craft and supports our industry in all the right ways.”
RACHAEL LITTLE – RUBY BLUE HAIR BOUTIQUE
@rubyblue_hairboutique
“Fraser threw the opportunity my way, and I jumped in — I love testing myself. Pressure makes diamonds, baby! The photo entry was super simple, just three shots and a fee — I wish all comps were that easy. Cutting live on stage was unreal. It was only my second time doing it, but once I got started, I felt right at home — tapped into some main character energy! My goto DEPOT products are the No. 310 Curl Designer and No. 308 Volumiser both are easy to use and give a clean, beautiful finish. DEPOT is next up — the community, the quality, the direction they’re heading… it’s all top-tier.”
TRAE TANE @tapertrae
“Sometimes I need a little push — this time it came from my boss, Costa, who encouraged me to submit a cut I’d just finished. The photo entry was a last-minute decision, but when a client came in with great hair and extra time, I knew that cut was the one. It wasn’t my first time on stage, but it was my first competition, and the nerves definitely kicked in. I’ve learned the only real competition is with yourself — progress is what really matters. My favourite product is the DEPOT No. 311 Fibre Cream — super versatile, great for both matte finishes and wet-textured styles. DEPOT has a strong identity and quality to match. I’d love to see them expand their digital and education presence — they have so much to offer the next generation.”

Celebrating 20 Years of HairCo. Australia
A LEGACY OF PASSION, INNOVATION, AND FAMILY
As HairCo. Australia celebrates its 20th anniversary; the company reflects with pride on two decades of growth and dedication to the Australian hairdressing and barbering industries. Founded in 2005 by Tony and Connie Alessi, HairCo. began as a familyrun business built on the values of quality service, personal connections, and a deep understanding of the industry’s needs. What started with Tony and Connie personally delivering products to customers has grown into a leading distributor of premium brands, now expanding internationally.
Tony Alessi often says, “Our journey began with a simple belief: to treat our customers like family and offer them the very best service and products. That’s still our mission today.” From the outset, Tony and Connie prioritised customer relationships, offering not only products but also expert advice to barbers and hairdressers. Their commitment to quality service and support became the hallmark of the business and established a loyal customer base that continues to drive its success today.
As HairCo. grew, the next generation of Alessi’s—brothers Christiaan, Daniel, and Dion—joined the business, each helping to guide the company’s expansion. Their involvement saw HairCo. extend its reach across Australia and launch an e-commerce platform, a key move that enabled the business to broaden its scope.
The introduction of e-commerce marked a pivotal moment in the company’s growth, enabling HairCo. to serve professionals and salon owners across the country and internationally. While the business scaled, it remained true to its core values, consistently offering the best, most innovative products to support the industry. Exclusive partnerships with industry-leading brands like JRL, Reuzel, and Oli G have been fundamental in HairCo. establishing itself as one of the most trusted distributors in the market.
In 2024, HairCo. proudly expanded into the New Zealand market, marking a significant milestone in the company’s growth. This expansion allows HairCo. to offer its premium products and exceptional customer service to Kiwi barbers and salon owners, strengthening its presence in the Australasian market. By offering the same commitment to quality and support that has defined the company’s success in Australia, HairCo. is excited to build strong relationships with professionals in New Zealand and contribute to the continued growth of the industry across both countries.
HairCo.’s commitment to quality has remained unwavering throughout the years. The company has always been at the forefront of finding and distributing products that meet the evolving needs of the industry. From high-end clippers and trimmers to haircare solutions, HairCo. continues to offer only the most professional, trusted, and innovative products, helping barbers and hairdressers deliver exceptional results.
Most recently, HairCo. has added premium Australian brand Canamo to their exclusive distribution. This partnership reflects HairCo.’s dedication to supporting local talent while continuing to offer exceptional products. The ability to blend global influence with local pride has allowed HairCo. to remain a leader in the industry, catering to both Australian and international markets.
Tony also shares, “It’s not just about the products. It’s about the people. Our success comes from the relationships we’ve built with our team, partners, and customers. We’re all part of something much bigger than a business—we’re a community.”
None of this success would have been possible without the dedication of the HairCo. team. From the warehouse to sales to the office, every member of the team plays an essential role in the company’s growth. Their commitment ensures that customers continue to receive the high level of service that Tony and Connie established from day one. HairCo.’s employees are not just colleagues—they are an integral part of the HairCo. family, contributing to the company’s mission of excellence.
HairCo. Australia’s success is also a testament to the trust and loyalty of its customers. The relationships built with barbers, salon owners, and industry professionals have been the cornerstone of the business. From the beginning, HairCo. has focused on providing not just products but also expert advice and support to help customers succeed. The ongoing trust and loyalty from its customer base have been vital to HairCo.’s continued growth and success.
As HairCo. celebrates its 20th anniversary, the company expresses deep gratitude to its industry partners, including Mocha Group, and to the many individuals and organisations who have supported and collaborated with them over the years. Although it’s impossible to name everyone, HairCo. is thankful for the many contributions that have made this journey possible.
Looking ahead, HairCo. is committed to continuing its legacy of excellence—offering the highest quality products, providing exceptional customer service, and staying at the forefront of industry innovation. The next chapter of HairCo. Australia’s story promises even greater growth, with the same family values and commitment to quality that have always defined the company.
Here’s to 20 years of HairCo. Australia, and to many more years of success, growth, and partnership.

ART OF THE PHOTOSHOOT
Part 2: Assembling Your Creative Team
By Ryan Poole
Being the barber behind the winning collection of the AMBA BTS Crew celebrating the photographer, stylist and make up artist, I’ve learned that a successful photoshoot doesn’t happen by accident. It’s not just about having a strong concept or the best models—it’s about having the right people behind the camera, in charge of wardrobe, and in the makeup chair. Your creative team can make or break your shoot, and assembling the right crew is one of the most important steps in the process.
In the numerous shoots I’ve been part of, one of the biggest game changers is figuring out who you’re creating with. My team usually includes:
• A photographer
• A stylist
• A makeup artist
• A videographer or content creator
These four roles are key to taking your shoot from decent to next-level. They help bring your concept to life in a way that feels polished, cohesive, and complete.
So, where should you start?
First, make sure you’ve got a creative brief ready. As discussed in Part 1, this should include your mood boards and a short written summary of your concept. It doesn’t need to be a full-on sales pitch—you’re not trying to sell someone a car—you’re inviting like-minded creatives to help you bring an idea to life.
Social media is your best friend when it comes to building your team. Reach out to creatives whose work aligns with your vision. Use your platform to post a casting call or project request. People are way more likely to respond when they know what they’re signing up for. Be clear and professional—but also, be yourself. You’re setting the tone for how you work as a creative lead. You’re not just looking for help; you’re building a collaboration.
Don’t Sleep on Student Talent
I know firsthand that budget is a big factor. Let’s be real—many of us (myself included) are working with tight budgets. One smart move is to reach out to uni students or recent grads looking to gain experience. Posting on community boards or in creative student groups can help attract new talent that’s just as passionate about building their portfolio as you are.
Trade for Print (TFP) is still super underrated in this industry, and honestly, it can take you places. You get fresh energy and talent, and they get experience and exposure. Most importantly, this can lead to long-term creative partnerships. Some of the best collaborators I’ve worked with started out just looking to build their books—and now they’re my go-to crew.
Keep the Communication Flowing
Once your team is locked in, don’t leave communication to chance. Start a group chat on WhatsApp, Messenger or Instagram. Share the creative brief, mood boards, call times, and location info. This isn’t just for logistics—it helps build momentum. When everyone feels included and, in the loop, they show up more invested. Plus, it saves you from last-minute stress and miscommunication that can throw off the whole vibe. These chats is where the collaboration truly begins. Getting insight on the project from all parties is where the creativity really blossoms.
Now Let’s Talk Models
Much like the rest of your team, you don’t need to break the bank when it comes to finding models. If you’re not working with an agency or don’t have the budget, you’ve still got options:
• Use your clients: Some of your regulars may have great hair, personal style, and camera presence. Don’t be afraid to ask if they’d be keen to model—it’s actually a compliment to be recognised that way.
• Scout on Instagram: Reach out to people who fit the aesthetic of your shoot. Offering contra deals like free haircuts, portfolio images, or social exposure can go a long way.
In my experience, some of the people I’ve cast have gone on to land other opportunities from the work we’ve created together—which is such a cool thing to see.
And here’s a big one: always have backup models. If your comp submission requires six images, line up seven or eight models. Not only does it give you more content for your portfolio, but it also saves the shoot if someone drops out or doesn’t deliver what you were expecting. Shoot days are hectic—being over-prepared beats scrambling every time.
Final Thoughts
Building the right creative team is the foundation of a great shoot. When everyone’s aligned with the vision and the communication is tight, you’re setting yourself up for success before the camera even clicks. It’s not just about filling roles—it’s about building a vibe and fostering long term connections with a crew you can trust.
Stay tuned for Part 3, where we finally step onto the set. From first call to final shot, I’ll break down how to run your shoot with confidence, stick to schedule, and keep the creative energy flowing. Vision is only half the job—the real magic happens in the execution.

BARBERS CHAIR edit THE
Teaching Barbering to Athletes Across Australia
By Gareth Philpott, The Barber Academy
Over the last couple of years, I’ve had the opportunity to do something unique — teach barbering to athletes across some of the biggest sporting codes in Australia.
Through The Barber Academy, we’ve been running hands-on education sessions with Rugby League, AFL, and now Rugby Union clubs. These aren’t just one-off workshops — they’re proper introductions into the world of barbering. A taste test, you could say, into what it’s like to pick up the clippers, learn a new skill, and see if it’s something worth pursuing further.
What started as a simple idea has turned into one of the most rewarding parts of my career.
Taking Barbering to the Locker Room
I’ve been lucky enough to travel all over the country, from major cities to regional towns, working directly with clubs and players. We bring everything in — tools, kits, mannequins, and most importantly, the energy. It’s not a classroom setting. We’re set up in gyms, recovery centres, locker rooms — anywhere the players are comfortable. And once we get started, the response is always the same: they’re hooked. There’s something about barbering that just clicks with athletes. Maybe it’s the attention to detail, the hands-on nature, or the satisfaction of seeing instant results. Whatever it is, I’ve seen players completely switch on when they start cutting. You can tell who’s going to take it further within the first 20 minutes.
More Than Just a Haircut
These sessions aren’t about becoming a qualified barber overnight. They’re designed to give players a real-world taste of what it feels like to cut hair — properly. We cover the basics: clipper control, fading, blending, scissor work, sectioning. It’s short, sharp, and practical. And for many of them, it’s the first time they’ve been exposed to a trade skill like this. Some walk away thinking, “That was fun.” Others say, “How do I sign up for the full course?”
That’s where The Barber Academy comes in. For those ready to take it further, we offer a clear pathway into the Certificate III in Barbering, and we support them every step of the way.
Building Culture Within the Team
One of the things I’ve noticed is how quickly barbering builds connection. When players start cutting each other’s hair — even just practising on mannequins or mates — there’s a new kind of energy in the room. They’re laughing, asking questions, showing off their progress. It becomes part of the team culture.
It’s also a great outlet for creativity and focus. Whether it’s cutting before game day, lining up a new look for the off-season, or just trying something new, barbering gives these athletes a chance to switch gears mentally and physically.
A Skill for Life After Sport
One of the reasons I’m so passionate about this initiative is because it gives players something tangible outside of their sport. The reality is careers in professional sport don’t last forever. Injuries happen. Contracts change. And when the spotlight fades, it helps to have a skill in your back pocket — something you can turn into a career or a side hustle.
I’ve already seen a few players from early programs take that next step — finishing their Cert III, working in barbershops during the off-season, even building their own personal brands. That’s what it’s all about. Giving them a head start on something that could change their life beyond the game.
What’s Next?
We’ve only just scratched the surface. There’s growing interest from other sporting codes — and we’re ready to keep rolling. The goal isn’t to create barbers out of every player, but to expose them to the possibilities. If someone walks away from one of our sessions thinking, “That was the first time I felt passionate about something outside of footy,” then I’ve done my job.
Barbering has changed my life — and now I get to share that with people who are already driven, focused, and eager to learn something new. Whether they’re cutting for mates, building a career, or just trying something different, I’m proud to be the one showing them the ropes. See you on the road — and don’t forget your clippers.

The Real Cost of Learning Barbering the WRONG Way (From Someone Who’s Seen It Firsthand)
By Damian Lai - Founder, School of Barbers
Let me keep it real with you. I’ve seen dozens—no, hundreds—of aspiring barbers walk into this industry with passion, excitement, and talent… only to burn out, give up, or stay stuck in the same spot for years.
Why?
Because they learned the wrong way.
They watched a few YouTube videos, practiced on their mates in the garage, maybe shadowed a cousin who’s been cutting for a while—but they never got taught the right fundamentals. And what followed was the same story on repeat:
• Bad habits that are hard to break
• Poor technique that never quite levels up
• Low confidence behind the chair
• And worst of all? Years of wasted time that they’ll never get back
I Was One of Them…
Before we built School of Barbers, I was that guy.
I didn’t have a course like this. I fumbled through it all. My first 2 years of barbering was all trial and error. Spending countless hours on YouTube every single day learning 100+ different techniques and processes. I remember charging $30 a cut, sometimes for free, just to practice. I’d spend 45 to 60 minutes on one fade and still wasn’t happy with it. The client would smile and say “thanks,” but I knew deep down it wasn’t clean. It wasn’t pro.
And the worst part? I didn’t know what I didn’t know. It wasn’t until I started investing into myself and learning from real professionals—guys who cut with speed, precision, and confidence—that I realised how far behind I was.
That’s when it clicked: I didn’t just waste time… I wasted opportunity.
The Hidden Price of Trial and Error
Everyone loves to preach “trial and error,” like it’s a badge of honour. But when it comes to barbering, trial and error is expensive—really expensive. Here’s what I’ve seen it cost people:
• Missed income: Barbers staying on $15–20 cuts for way too long because they’re too slow or not confident enough to raise their prices. That’s thousands left on the table each year.
• Confidence hits: When a client asks for a drop fade or a specific style you haven’t mastered, and you panic. That’s not a good feeling—and it builds up.
• Skill ceilings: Without proper training, there’s only so far you can go. Some barbers stay stuck doing basic styles because no one taught them how to level up. This comes with ego that there is nowhere else to grow in the industry because in their heads “they know it all”.
We Built the School We Wish We Had
I’m not here to sugarcoat it. Learning barbering the wrong way is painful. That’s why we created the School of Barbers—to shortcut all that struggle and give future barbers the foundation they actually need. From Day 1, we give you:
• The right techniques
• Speed & structure
• Real shop experience
• Marketing, mindset, and business skills
We don’t just teach you how to cut—we teach you how to thrive. Because here’s the truth no one wants to say:
Barbering isn’t just about fades and tapers. It’s about speed. It’s about retention. It’s about brand. It’s about confidence. And it’s about knowing you’re doing it right—without second-guessing yourself every time you pick up the clippers.
I’ve Seen the Transformation
Every intake, we get students who’ve never cut before—or worse, have been cutting for a year and still feel like beginners. And in just six weeks? They’re moving fast, cutting clean, and charging what they’re worth. One of our students went from cutting in his parents’ garage to landing a job at a top-tier shop in less than two months. Another went from $200 to $2,000/week in under 90 days.
That’s not hype. That’s what happens when you get taught the right way from the start.
Final
Word:
Don’t Let Inexperience Cost You Years
If you’re reading this and you’re thinking of becoming a barber—or you already are one but feel stuck—this is your sign.
The industry is growing, but only the best-prepared barbers will thrive. If you’re serious about making this a career, don’t waste the next 1–2 years “figuring it out.”
Start the right way, right now.
This isn’t a pitch—it’s a warning from someone who’s been through it.
Cut smart. Cut clean. Cut with purpose.

Choosing the best hairstyle for your clients face shape and adding volume .
By Jim Shaw, UK
When it comes to choosing a hairstyle, knowing what works for your face shape will help to have you looking your best. Here is my top tips when it comes to choosing.
ROUND
Round faces often lack definition, adding sharpness and dimension with the hair will help elevate your look. Opting for haircuts with more length on the top will help elongate your face and help add some volume. Quiffs are a great option, as well as a side parting with the hair parted to one side of the head it instantly adds length to the face.
DIAMOND
Diamond faces are a little wider at the sides and narrower at the chin, therefore, adding some roundness will make the face appear a lot more oval. With this face shape, you want to add a little bit of height but not too much. The textured crop is a great style for this face shape. Adding texture on the top gives much more dimension to the hair, therefore looking fuller without elongating the face.
Heart- people with heart shaped faces, often have a natural widows peak. Therefore, slicking the hair back will only accentuate this more. Keep the hair light and airy will embrace texture and work best for this shape. With the cheeks being wider, keeping it shorter at the sides will help keep the face looking narrow with more height on the top. I also advise sporting a light stubble with this face shape, nothing too wild that will emphasise the chin.
OBLONG
Award winning men’s hairdresser, Jim Shaw, shares tips on choosing the right hairstyle for your face shape and once done how about adding some volume too!
Oblong faces often have stronger jawlines than others, making their faces extremely symmetrical. A buzz cut is great for anyone with an oblong face, little length on the top and softness helps create a more rounded look to the face. Having equal length on both the sides and the tops helps balance this out well. Goatee beards work amazingly for this face shape, as a full beard will only widen out the jaw.
TRIANGLE
As this face shape is extremely sharp, using the hair to soften the features works well. Longer hair looks amazing, as well as, adding a fringe to as the help to de-emphasise the chin and jaw. Clean shaven works best for this look to show off the angular features.
Once your on track with the shape, adding volume can create different shapes to be more versatile.
Avoid using heavy conditioners
Opting for lightweight conditioners will allow your hair to be more voluminous. Heavier conditioners can weigh the hair down creating a flat look. It is important to know your hair type and use products that are going to work in your favour. When washing hair, apply conditioner to the ends only, this prevents hair from becoming greasy quickly.
Use a sea salt spray
Using a sea salt spray is a great way to add volume to the hair. The spray helps the hair stand away from the scalp by encouraging volume and pushes hair away from the root. Using a sea salt spray can also refresh the hair whilst also adding texture and volume. The best way to use this is on towel dried hair and spray a few inches away for the best results. Sea salt sprays work and benefit all hair types.
The upside down blowdry
As strange as it sounds, this technique is proven to add more volume to your hair. Begin with towel dried hair and apply your desired product of choice; sea salt spray, volumising powder etc. By flipping the hair upside down you allow the hair to float naturally in the desired position. Use a rounded brush to get the desired shape before blasting with some cold air to hold in to place.
Using dry shampoo
Using a volumising dry shampoo kills two birds with one stone. Dry shampoo is an amazing tool for adding volume and for bringing your hair back to life after a few days! This product is super simple to use and can be used throughout the day to add some love back in to your hair. It also adds some texture to your hair, creating a fuller look.

STAGE FRIGHT!
By Frank Ciccone
I’ve looked after some of the biggest celebrities in the world. I’ve been thrown into situations where I’ve needed to style hair last minute backstage at major events. But…. to stand up on stage in front of hundreds of industry peers at the AMBAs (Australian Modern Barber Awards) was the most stressful and nerve-racking gig I’ve ever experienced.
HERE’S HOW IT ALL UNFOLDED:
I get a call from the big boss, Linda Woodhead, who asks me if I would like to host the AMBAs.
My reply without any hesitation was “Of course, anything for you guys. It would be an honour.” I didn’t even think twice.
Fast forward to a few weeks later and I see a bunch of marketing and PR come out about me hosting. I froze, I started sweating and feeling nervous.
THE BIG DAY ARRIVES...
At this point, I’m absolutely terrified and there’s still a few hours to go, then I see Linda, Louise and Jarred and some other Mocha Group legends. I feel a little less nervous.
I wait until Kellie Woodhead, my rock, beacon, saviour and co host, arrived and we start our rehearsal.
Now, I do need to mention something here, I’ve never read off a teleprompter before. You know, that little glass screen in front of you that scrolls through the script as you speak.
I struggled big time. I was reading off it like I was literally just reading. I had no emotion, I didn’t look up and as the nerves and sweats kicked in, I thought “I’ve bit off way more than I could chew. What have I done”?!
Then, Linda comes up to and whispers “when there is a comma take breath. When there is a full stop, look up, smile and pause”. That saved me.
We did a second rehearsal; Kellie was guiding me and gave me heaps of professional advice.
Backstage there was a stage technician, Natalie, who was in charge of the teleprompter. She was awesome and helped me so much throughout the night.
She made sure the teleprompter scrolled according to my reading speed.
Ten minutes until the show starts, my nerves are all over the place. Kellie brings in two glasses of sparkling wine to help calm the nerves. It worked, for now!
The show starts and there’s some technical issue with the opening act. I didn’t see it happen, but I heard Jarred Stedman entertaining the audience while they were sorting out the microphone issues. He is an absolute natural with the crowd and I’m here backstage sweating in my suit.
Shortly, our names are called out: “Frank Ciccone & Kellie Woodhead”. There was a massive round of applause, my nerves were magically gone, and I look at the teleprompter, ready to take this on, only to discover that the teleprompter has scrolled to the end of the show!!
I pause, waiting for some sort of fix or signal, but there was nothing. I look at Kellie and she is completely calm, waiting for the prompter to go back to the start. There is still nothing and I’m dying on the inside. As I am mentally crying, someone in the crowd yells out “come on, Frankie, you can do it!” and people clapped in support, assuming I was nervous and couldn’t do it!
But no. I wasn’t choking on my words or nervously frozen, it was THE TELEPROMPTER’s FAULT!!
You could hear crickets. That’s how it felt onstage. I turned to the curtain that was on the side stage, and I yell out “ ummm Natalie?”. There’s a bit of laughter from the audience and I am relieved that they no longer assume I was frozen with nerves. Then I look back at the teleprompter and, sure enough, Natalie had come in clutch and the prompter was back to the beginning!!
YES! We are back! I wipe the sweat from my forehead, and I start the proceedings of the night.
Kellie and Natalie were both incredible the entire event, guiding me on when to go back on and off stage and making sure I was thoroughly prepared for each segment.
I saw so many of my amazing friends and peers come up on stage to accept their well-deserved awards. I was even recognised on stage by some winners who acknowledged me as their mentor, which was a career defining moment for me.
When the amazing Claire Castles was inducted into the Hall of Fame, a life changing award I was presented with last year, I was emotional backstage as I started reflecting on my own award acceptance. Yes, there were some tears. I told my children and wife that there were onions being peeled backstage. Don’t tell them that I lied.
Once Jarred ended the night, announcing the Australian Barber of the Year, they then organised the winners group photo. It was at this moment that I knew I had survived the night.
As this was happening, I yelled out to Kellie…”we did it !!”
I co hosted one of Australia’s best and most prestigious awards ceremonies. I was trusted by the amazing team over at Mocha Group to fly the flag for them.
I hope I made the Mocha group proud that night and I hope those of you reading this that attended the night enjoyed it.
Until next time

LEGACY IN MOTION:
Reimagining the Future of Barbering
There’s something stirring in our industry a shift, a surge, a deeper sense of direction. The fades may be fresh and the trends ever evolving, but beneath it all lies a more important question: Are we laying down a foundation strong enough for the next generation to build upon?
At Not About Us, we believe that the future of barbering doesn’t just arrive, it’s constructed with intention. Through Knowledge, Lessons, and Stories, passed down from one generation to the next, we lay the bricks of legacy and through storytelling, community engagement, and ongoing action, we hope to play our part in shaping a Barber culture that not only grows but thrives.
Beyond the Four Walls: Why Vision Matters
Many barbers spend the majority of their careers within the familiar walls of their shop, and while those spaces hold power, they’re not the limit. The moment we step outside into Expos, Workshops, and Industry events, we begin to realise just how vast the world of barbering really is.
Events like Expo4Barbers don’t just showcase skill, they expand vision, spark curiosity, reignite passion and they remind us that barbering is more than a service it’s a cultural force. It’s Influence. It’s Community. It’s Movement.
At industry gatherings like these, the clippers quiet for a moment and something bigger speaks. We remember our “Why” our “Purpose”, and we recognise that when we connect beyond the chair, we’re not just building Businesses or the Industry. We’re building legacies.
Education: The Currency That Builds Futures
Let’s have a real conversation: Everyone wants to be an educator, and we get it, the opportunities, the visibility, the travel. But the title comes with more responsibility than reward. Education isn’t about the limelight. It’s about longevity. It’s about using your platform not to elevate yourself but to elevate others. It’s about passing down knowledge that builds culture, sharpens craft, and raises the bar for the next wave of barbers and perhaps most importantly it’s about service.
Real education doesn’t start on a stage; it starts in the chair. In everyday conversations with our clients. Teaching them about their scalp condition, their hair texture, or prescribing products that serve them best. That’s grassroots education and with the right intention, those small moments spark greater purpose.
Special acknowledgment goes out to the 4Barbers x The Barber Academy Educational Team, who continue to raise the standard of Education in Australia. They embody what it means to educate with integrity and utilise your platform to elevate the Industry.
The Weight of Influence
Influence is one of the most powerful tools we hold in this industry. But it’s not a trophy it’s a responsibility. As educators, leaders, and barbers, we’re not just teaching techniques we’re shaping perspectives. We’re shifting mindsets. We’re creating ripple effects that last far beyond the barbershop itself. That means leading with integrity, not ego. Giving more than we take and understanding that influence is not about building platforms for ourselves it’s about building better barbers for our industry. Let’s keep it clear: Education is not what you get, it’s what you give.
Together, Not Solo: The Collective Future
The evolution of our industry won’t be led by a single clipper, a single brand, or a single voice. It will be built by all of us connected by culture, driven by purpose, and united by a shared vision of what barbering could be.
Right now, in Australia, we’re in the infancy of something special and that’s not a limitation it’s a rare opportunity. We’re standing at the beginning of a new era, where we don’t have to follow old models. We get to design our own. We get to shape a movement that’s rooted in community, fuelled by education, and defined by values that go beyond the chair.
But progress doesn’t happen by accident, and it doesn’t happen alone. It takes intentional collaboration, honest conversations, and a willingness to build together, not just for the spotlight, but for the generations that will come after us.
If we commit to growing together to sharing knowledge, embracing humility, and holding each other to a higher standard we won’t just elevate the industry. We’ll redefine it.
As we sign off, remember: We’re not just here to cut hair. We’re here to cut paths, carve legacies, and craft culture.
Pass the torch. Share the story. Build the future.

The Lost Art of CONSULTATION IN BARBERING
By Matt Clarke
I believe consultation in barbering is a lost art. Too often, it’s reduced to a quick question— “What are we doing today?”— rather than the ongoing, active process it should be. A proper consultation isn’t just about asking what a client wants or dislikes about their hair. It’s about truly understanding who they are.
For me, consultation begins the moment a client walks through the door and continues throughout the entire service. It’s about subtle, intentional engagement—using conversation not as idle chit-chat, but as a way to gather meaningful insights that allow me to offer the best possible service.
If I know a client is juggling work stress, wrestling with the morning school run, managing a long commute, or going on a streak of dates, I can tailor his haircut to fit that lifestyle. That’s how I move from being just a barber to becoming his personal hair care professional.
My goal is to create an environment where he doesn’t need to micromanage his haircut. He can come in, sit down, have a chat, and take a break from life’s pressures—knowing I’ve got him. He trusts that I know his hair better than he does and that I always have his best interests at heart.
That’s real consultation. That’s the connection that elevates a haircut into a service—and a barber into a trusted professional. As barbers, we often feel stuck in the grind of the bread-and-butter 3/4 back and sides, brushed across, with a soft parting. And I can tell you now: once you’ve positioned yourself as what I call ‘the hair care professional’, then all your recommendations to your clients will be taken. Because they trust you. You know what’s best for them, and all those cool adjustments or styles you’ve been dying to try? They’ll say yes.
Here’s the thing: the more trust you build, the more creative freedom you get. You move out of that “just do what we did last time” box and into a place where your clients are excited to hear your ideas. They start saying things like, “Whatever you think, mate.”
And I promise you; there’s no better feeling than knowing you’re not just cutting someone’s hair— you’re curating their look. You’re helping them feel more confident walking into that meeting, that date, or just heading out for a beer with the boys.
This level of service does more than lift your day-to-day. It lifts the whole industry. The more we show up with purpose, creativity, and care, the more clients understand our value. And you know what? That leads to being able to charge more. Not because we slap on a price for the sake of it, but because the service matches it. You’ve put in the time, the skill, and the thought.
When you’re known as someone who truly looks after their clients, you stop chasing the numbers and start attracting the right people. The kind of clients who respect what you do, and who come back like clockwork.
This isn’t just theory—I’ve seen it work time and time again with barbers I’ve mentored and trained. When they shift their mindset from “haircutter” to “hair care professional,” everything changes. They start to retain more clients, who begin rebooking before they’ve even left the chair. They get referred more often. They’re no longer in that stressful hustle for new walk-ins every week.
It’s a common story you hear, but one of the barbers I’ve taught was a very talented barber but was still struggling to build a loyal clientele, he completely turned things around by embracing this mindset. He stopped focusing on the transaction and started focusing on connection. He got to know his clients, remembered the names of their kids, asked about their jobs, made notes about product preferences. Within six months, he wasn’t just booked out—but had a waitlist. He was able to raise his prices because his clients weren’t coming for the haircut anymore— they were coming for the experience, for the relationship, for that sense of being looked after. That’s the power of shifting the way we approach consultation.
Even more powerful is how this approach creates consistency across a team. I’ve worked with barbershop owners who have implemented this style of consultation training with their staff—and they’ve seen a noticeable improvement in the overall client experience. Suddenly, every barber in the shop is aligned. Clients know what to expect. The service feels premium, even if the haircut itself is basic. Morale improves, confidence grows, and staff start to understand the deeper impact of what we do beyond the scissors.
This is what I talk about in my education. One of my newest classes is called Hair Care Professionals: Your Guide to Curating Your Dream Clientele. It’s designed to help barbers—from apprentices to shop owners—rethink the consultation process, build stronger relationships, and create a client base that values you for more than just a clean fade. Because here’s what I know after over 12 years in the industry and two Australian Barber of the Year titles: your technical skill is only part of the job. What really sets you apart is your ability to make people feel seen, understood, and looked after. That’s how we raise the bar in barbering.
That’s how we move from being hair cutters to hair care professionals. It starts with the conversation. And it never really ends.

THE TIME
Help Shape the Future of Barbering IS NOW!
By Jimmy O’Brien – Jimmy Rods
After years, yes, years of advocating for a long-overdue review of the Certificate III in Barbering, we’ve finally reached a defining moment. The review is officially underway. For those of us who’ve been calling for more relevant, practical, and forward-thinking training standards, this is the opportunity we’ve been waiting for.
Earlier this year I had the honour of flying to Sydney to join the Strategic Workforce Advisory Group (SWAG), a significant milestone not just for me personally, but for all barbers who’ve been pushing for change, relevance, and true representation in our education and training framework.
What Does This Mean for Our Industry?
This is more than a review—it’s a chance to reshape our industry from the ground up. It’s about ensuring that the Certificate III in Barbering and related qualifications reflect the real-world skills needed in today’s barbershops. As part of the national project led by kills Insight, the following qualifications are now being reviewed:
-SHB30416 Certificate III in Hairdressing
-SHB30516 Certificate III in Barbering
-SHB40216 Certificate IV in Hairdressing -SHB50216 Diploma of Salon Management
You can learn more or get involved herehttps://sacsa.org.au
The Goals of This Review Include:
Reducing Duplication: Removing overlapping content while keeping essential repetition that builds competency.
Streamlining Qualifications: Exploring the potential for one core Certificate III qualification with specialisation streams to simplify the learner experience.
Improving Pathways: Creating clear and seamless transitions from Cert III to Diploma-level qualifications for better career progression.
Enhancing Practical Skills: Placing greater focus on foundational, jobready skills to better prepare apprentices for real client demands.
Where Do You Come In?
This review is not just for industry insiders—it’s for all of us. Whether you’ve been cutting for two years or twenty, your voice matters. We’re at a turning point, and it’s time we all speak up.
Let’s take one of the more hotly debated topics: shampooing and basin work. Some argue it should remain an elective, but I strongly believe it deserves a place as a core unit. Why? Because it’s not just about rinsing
hair. It’s about understanding scalp conditions, maintaining hygiene standards, and offering tailored advice to clients—professionalism that sets great barbers apart.
Then there’s colouring, it’s no longer just a trend—it’s become a cornerstone of modern barbering. From bleach fades to bold tones, today’s clients are requesting more than just a cut. Right now, colouring is included as a core unit—and for good reason. It reflects the diversity of services we offer every day. So, we must ask; Are we preparing apprentices for the real job? Are our current units still relevant? Because this review gives us the rare chance to answer those questions and make lasting change. This is our opportunity to modernise, evolve, and ensure that what we teach reflects who we are and where we’re going.
Expo 4 Barbers – What an Incredible Experience!
While we’re on the subject of industry momentum, I must give a massive shoutout to the team Expo4Barbers on the Gold Coast. What an unforgettable experience! From start to finish, the event was packed with energy, inspiration, and passion. I was honoured to judge the intense and creative Barber Battle and to share insights on the business panel. The conversations we had were not only eye-opening—they were uplifting and forward-thinking, showing how much our industry is thriving. A huge thank you to the entire 4Barbers team for hosting such a well-organised, high-impact event. And of course, a special shoutout to Fraser, your leadership and vision continue to push the industry to new heights.
Already counting down to the next one!
Lastly, I want to express my gratitude to the Mocha team for the special recognition award. It truly means the world to be acknowledged among such passionate and talented professionals.
The time is now. Let’s shape the next chapter of barbering, together.

IT’S A BOLD STATEMENT… But is the Australian Barbering industry back in GROWTH mode?
By Hayley Mears
It’s the vibe, it’s the feeling, and over the next few months, the data is going to back this up. Hasn’t it been a WILD few years of complete uncertainty? The decline in apprentices, the shift to solo operators, the cost of living crisis, the desire for work-life balance, and the absolute stress of the unknown.
The last couple of years, many of us have been “hanging on” to our businesses. In my view, the most comforting and authentic thing to come out of this is how many of us put our hands up and said, “It’s not easy, and I am struggling.” That brought our sense of community together. GUYS! I really think we are going to come out the other side. Sadly, some businesses just didn’t make it. I always look at that as a redirection. The universe pre-emptively putting you on a path to something new, something you didn’t know you needed.
If you haven’t seen the shift yet, take peace in the news that IT IS COMING. Everything in business and life is cyclical. It’s hard to see when you’re in it. Every recession in history has eventually ended. All periods of economic growth have also ended; we move around in circles.
So here are the lessons as the clouds part and we can breathe a little easier. SAVE. YOUR. MONEY. We all need a cash safety net. What that looks like is different for every business, but my look on this is your safety net of savings should be around three months of ALL business expenses. Wages, stock, insurance, rent, and most importantly, ALL TAXES. If you have this put away, it will ease the load of stress for the unpredictable times. The floods, the pandemics, and the business curve balls you never see coming.
Here is what I want all of my clients to do…
Start tracking your key performance indicators (KPIs) religiously. Now is the time to get forensic about your numbers. Understand your client retention rate, your average service value, your retail sales per client, and your staff productivity. Knowing these figures inside out will allow you to identify areas for improvement and capitalise on the upcoming growth. Don’t just look at turnover; focus on profitability.
Review your pricing strategy. The cost of everything has gone up. Are your prices reflecting this? Don’t be afraid to implement a modest price increase, ensuring you communicate the value you provide to your clients. Research your local market, understand what your competitors are charging, and position yourself accordingly. Value your expertise and the quality of your services. Break the rules of pricing if you think you can find an alternate way to structure what you charge. Remember, we have entered a new era, the old rules no longer apply.
Invest in your team as individuals. Rather than giving everyone the exact same training and development, look at each individuals weaknesses and strengths. Celebrate what they are great at and elevate them. Refine what they could work on because this will be different for everyone. Incentivise them based on what really drives each person. We all have different motivators. Happy staff equals happy clients and a thriving business.
Refine your client experience. In a competitive market, the overall experience you offer can be a major differentiator. From the moment a client books an appointment to the follow-up after their service, ensure every touchpoint is exceptional. Reverse engineer the most amazing service you have ever had and work out how to create a feeling as well as an experience.
Embrace digital marketing strategically. Use out-of-home marketing but convert it digitally. What I mean is to use QR codes and mirror decals in partnership with your local cocktail bar. Partner with your coffee shop to cross-promote and utilise each other’s audiences. The ultimate secret to social success. Make every reel video interesting. Create content that sparks curiosity. The cliffhangers are what make you go viral.
Get back out there and breathe a little easier knowing that we are entering a new chapter and that the future is bright!

Stop Being the Nice Guy: How Barbers Can Overcome People-Pleasing to Boost Their Business
By Carlo Chincarini
As a barber, you’re not just cutting hair—you’re building a brand, serving clients, and running a business. But there’s a hidden obstacle that’s quietly killing your success, and it’s not the economy, algorithms, or marketing. It’s something 98% of business owners, including barbers, struggle with: peoplepleasing, or what I call Nice Person Syndrome.
This debilitating habit keeps you stuck, undercharging, overworking, and frustrated, preventing you from growing your shop and making the money you deserve. As a business coach who’s worked with elite athletes, CEOs, and service providers like you, I’ve seen how this syndrome sabotages success—and I’ve lived it myself. Here’s how to break free, take charge, and become the confident, profitable barber you’re meant to be.
The Nice Person Syndrome: Why It’s Holding You Back
You got into barbering because you love the craft. Maybe you started cutting hair in a garage, and now you’ve got your own shop, a team, and a loyal clientele. You pride yourself on being a good person—someone who delivers killer fades, builds trust, and keeps clients happy. But there’s a difference between being a good human and being a “nice guy” in business.
Nice Person Syndrome is rooted in a myth: if you’re endlessly giving, accommodating, and likable, clients will love you, your needs will be met, and your business will thrive. Sounds great, right? Too bad it’s a lie. When you prioritize pleasing others over your own goals, you end up frustrated, underpaid, and burned out. You might undercharge for a premium cut to keep a client happy, let latecomers disrupt your schedule, or avoid raising prices because you’re scared, they’ll walk away. This isn’t kindness—it’s a trap that devalues your skills and shrinks your bank account.
The Root of the Problem: Toxic Shame
To understand why Nice Person Syndrome is so damaging, let’s get real for a moment. As kids, we’re born helpless, relying on others to meet our needs. When those needs aren’t fully met—through no one’s fault but just the messiness of life—we internalize a fear of abandonment. We start believing that if we’re not “good enough,” people will leave us. Worse, we develop toxic shame—a deep-seated belief that there’s something wrong with us, that we’re not okay as we are. So, we try to fix it by becoming who we think others want us to be.
In your barber shop, this shows up as saying yes to every client request, avoiding conflict, or staying quiet when your team slacks off. You’re not just cutting hair—you’re tiptoeing through life, seeking approval to avoid that old fear of being “not enough.” But here’s the truth: trying harder to be nice only deepens the frustration, damages your relationships, and keeps your business stuck.
Breaking Free: Becoming the Integrated King
The opposite of Nice Person Syndrome isn’t being a jerk—it’s becoming what I call the Integrated King. This is the version of you that leads with purpose, confidence, and vision, unapologetically owning your worth. Here’s how to make the shift and grow your barber business:
1. Set Rock-Solid Boundaries
Boundaries aren’t mean—they’re a sign of self-respect. Create clear shop policies, like a 24-hour cancellation fee or fixed hours. If a client begs for a last-minute slot, say, “I’m booked today, but I’ve got you tomorrow at 3 PM.” Post these rules on your booking site or in your shop. When you enforce boundaries, clients respect you more, and you reclaim your time.
2. Charge What You’re Worth
Stop undercharging to be liked. Research local rates—if the average fade is $30 but your skills are top-tier, charge $40. Raise prices gradually (10-15%) and give clients a heads-up: “To keep delivering the best cuts, prices are going up next month. Thanks for your support!” Offer premium services, like a $60 VIP package with a cut, shave, and scalp massage, to boost revenue without overworking.
3. Communicate with Confidence
Speak up without fear. If a client’s always late, try, “I love having you in my chair, but starting on time helps me keep the day smooth.” Upsell naturally: “This styling gel will keep that fade sharp—want to try it?” Ask for referrals: “If you’re stoked with the cut, tell your friends—I’m taking new clients!” Clear communication builds respect and grows your business.
4. Invest in Your Growth
Say yes to yourself. Take courses to master new techniques, like textured crops or beard sculpting. Market your work on Instagram or TikTok with before-and-after videos— a 15-second reel of a flawless fade can draw in high-paying clients. Upgrade your shop’s vibe with better lighting or fresh decor to justify premium prices. Growth isn’t selfish—it’s how you build a brand clients trust.
5. Build a Support System
You don’t have to do this alone. Connect with other barbers in local or online communities to share tips and challenges. Consider a business coach to keep you accountable. Celebrate every win—whether it’s enforcing a boundary or landing a new client—to build momentum.
The Payoff: More Money, More Freedom
Kicking Nice Person Syndrome to the curb doesn’t mean losing your heart—it means stepping into your power. By setting boundaries, charging your worth, communicating boldly, investing in growth, and surrounding yourself with support, you’ll make more money, attract better clients, and run your shop on your terms. You’ll trade frustration for fulfillment and build a business that reflects the skilled, confident barber you are.
Your time is now. Stop seeking approval and start leading as the Integrated King. Your clients, your team, and your bank account will thank you.

Dealing with Negative Employees
By Liz McKeon
In order to maintain a positive barber shop environment, it is important to address negative employees. Negativity can cause distractions in the workplace that lead to reduced productivity and diminished employee morale. Address issues between staff at the onset of problems rather than allowing issues to grow.
Working conditions can affect many parts of the atmosphere, including:
Employee motivation: when employees enjoy their jobs and the people they work with, they are motivated to show up to work every day and perform to the best of their ability.
Negative people can detract from this motivation.
Job satisfaction: a major component of employee satisfaction is feeling supported, comfortable and safe at work. Negativity from co-workers can reduce these positive feelings.
Employee focus: negative employees can take the focus away from projects and responsibilities. The employee may become the topic of conversation, rather than the salon tasks.
Steps to deal with negative employees
1. Listen
If an employee comes to you with a concern about a co-worker who has become too negative, listen before responding. Remember, what one person sees as negativity may just be a misunderstanding or a personality difference. Take careful notes about the complaint and remember to thank the person for their honesty and bringing the matter to your attention. Avoid promising actions or consequences.
2. Research the situation
7. Watch out for ‘pushback’
Pushback can take many forms, but it presents as total resistance to an instruction or unwanted change. It can take the form of silence, arguing or passive-aggressive responses.
Before speaking to the person, find out more about the situation. Get different perspectives from other team members. Ask open ended questions that allow people to offer their opinions - you want honest answers. Choose your words carefully. For example, rather than saying “has Jason ever been negative towards you?”, you might get a better response by rephrasing and asking, “how is your relationship with Jason?”. Always observe interactions between your team members and note any behaviours that don’t align with your company ethos.
3. Address your concerns
If you have noticed instances of negativity from a team member, arrange an informal meeting. Be prepared to carefully explain your observations, using specific examples.
Mention how this may be affecting other employees and the business.
4. Offer positive statements
Don’t spend the entire meeting talking about the negative behaviour. Balance the feedback by offering praise for areas where they are doing great, positive feedback from clients and how you value them as a team member. Hopefully, this will be enough for the person to get back to their best selves.
5. Document your notes
Always keep detailed records of your observations, conversations and meetings. Include dates and times. Have your employee sign off on meeting agendas and the plan of action agreed, showing their agreement and consent. Note concerns on employee review documentation. If you have any concerns, contact your HR company before engaging in any discussions and follow their instructions.
6. Avoid gossip
Even though it might be difficult you must remain neutral and open-minded. Don’t get involved in gossip and if conversations turn nasty instead of factual, remind all employees that this behaviour is most unhelpful.
Generally, the more significant the change, the more pushback you get. Pushback can be harmful to the morale and productivity of the team. Learning to effectively deal with pushback is necessary. As a manager, your success is built on your credibility.
To handle pushback effectively, don’t make any knee-jerk reactions. Stay neutral and calm until you have enough information to fully understand what you are dealing with. Get the facts, don’t blame anybody else, make your own decisions and follow up.
Don’t get caught up in the team’s opinions, listen carefully to all parties, communicate directly, be clear about decisions and next steps.
8. Focus on maintaining a positive workplace
Create an atmosphere that encourages open communication among all team members and management, encouraging staff to address issues when they’re manageable, preventing larger problems in future.
Regularly review company policies, values and client expectations. Schedule time for group staff meetings, where everybody feels they are an important asset to the team. Encourage discussions about the salon culture and atmosphere, not just for your clients but also for the team.
During meetings check in with team members about how they’re managing their roles and responsibilities. Catch stressed out employees early on, as this will help you work with them to manage their challenges before those issues affect the entire team and the atmosphere on the floor.
Reward positive attitudes and teamwork. Create a system for staff to recognise each other for positive behaviour.
The definition of leadership is the ‘ability of a company’s manager to make sound decisions and inspire others to perform well’. It sounds simple. But it isn’t always that easy!

Kicking Leasing Goals: What to Look for when Hiring a Lease Negotiator
By Your Leasing Co
Navigating the intricacies of a commercial Lease can be daunting, but the right Lease negotiator can make all the difference. As a commercial Tenant, you want to ensure that your Lease agreement is favourable and aligns closely with your business goals.
Keep reading for some tips on what you should look for when hiring a Lease negotiator to secure the best terms for your business premises.
Proven Track Record and Expertise
When it comes to negotiating Leases, there’s no substitute for experience.
A Lease negotiator with a proven track record not only brings industry insight but also has a nuanced understanding of market trends. Look for someone who has successfully negotiated Leases similar to yours and can provide references or case studies from past clients or better still, hear from their clients directly, by reading through their Google reviews. This kind of expertise ensures they can anticipate potential challenges and leverage opportunities in the negotiation process.
Market Knowledge and Insight
The commercial real estate market is constantly changing, which means your Lease negotiator needs to be on top of the latest trends. Whether it’s emerging neighbourhoods, shifting demands for space or movements in rental rates and incentives, in depth market knowledge can significantly impact the terms of your Lease. Ensure your potential negotiator has a keen understanding of both local and national markets related to your industry.
Excellent Communication Skills
Your Lease negotiator acts as the bridge between you and the Landlord. This makes strong communication skills essential. They should be able to clearly articulate your business needs and concerns while maintaining a professional and persuasive demeanour. Importantly, look for someone who listens well and can translate complex Lease terms into a language that’s easy for you to understand, ensuring you are fully informed every step of the way.
Negotiation Acumen
At its core, the role of a Lease negotiator is about striking the best possible deal for you. This requires strong negotiation skills and the ability to remain calm under pressure. They should be both assertive and strategic, thinking creatively about how to structure the Lease to benefit your business. Inquire about how potential Lease negotiators have managed challenging negotiations in the past and the results they have attained. Do they have positive reviews or case studies to demonstrate their success?
Understanding of Legal and Financial Implications
Lease negotiations aren’t just about monthly rent. There are a myriad of other clauses with significant financial and legal implications for you as the Tenant. Your Lease negotiator should have a firm grasp on all of these. This ensures that you are not walking into a Lease with hidden costs or unfavourable terms. A good negotiator knows how to safeguard your business interests while aligning the Lease with your financial goals.
Personal Compatibility and Trust
You’ll likely be working closely with your Lease negotiator for an extended period of time. It’s crucial that you feel comfortable with them and have trust in their abilities. During the selection process, consider whether they are someone you feel aligned with on a personal level. Do they understand your vision for your business? What are their core values? Building a rapport based on trust and mutual respect means that you can confidently rely on their advice and expertise.
Transparency and Ethical Standards
Last but certainly not least, choose a Lease negotiator who values transparency and holds high ethical standards. They should be upfront about their fees, the scope of work and any potential conflicts of interest. An ethical negotiator ensures that the process is straightforward and your interests as a Tenant are prioritised.
Conclusion: Making the Right Choice
Hiring a Lease negotiator is an investment in your business’s future. By choosing someone with experience, market knowledge and negotiation skills, you can lay the foundation for a successful Lease agreement. Remember to look for someone who communicates well, understands the legal and financial details and, importantly, someone you can trust. With the right Lease negotiator, you can focus on what you do best — growing your business — while they secure the ideal space to support your vision.

Step Up or Step Off!
By Dwight Hodge
It’s time to act like the boss your barbershop needs. Let’s call it for what it is. There are two types of barbershop owners out there: those who talk about wanting a successful shop and those who actually lead one.
If you’re still stuck behind the chair every hour of every day, still avoiding uncomfortable convos, still playing small - this is your line in the sand. You either step up and take control, or you step off and get out of the way, settling for where you are.
You don’t have to do it all at once. But you do have to own your role as the leader. The standard-setter. The culture-builder. The one steering the ship.
Let’s break it down into three focus areas that’ll move the needle - fast.
1. Attract the Right Clients (Not Just Any Clients)
If your books are full but your bank account’s still stressing you out, you’re not running a business. You’re running a barbershop daycare. Not every client is a good client.
You need people in your chairs who value what you do, show up on time, spend well, rebook, and send their mates. The ones who treat you like a professional, not just someone who gives cheap cuts.
Stepping up here means getting crystal clear on who you actually want to work with. Stop trying to please everyone - you’ll end up burnt out, underpaid, and resenting the people you once loved to serve.
Own your vibe. Show it clearly in your marketing. Speak directly to the kind of client you want. Your people will get it, and the rest can walk on by.
Try This:
Grab your last 50 appointments. Highlight the 5 best clients — based on spend, vibe, and reliability. That’s your new client blueprint. Build your content, offers, and team focus around them.
2. Create a Rhythm That Actually Works
If every week feels like chaos, if your team’s coasting, if you’re reacting instead of leading, that’s not a vibe. Your shops and team are a liability.
Strong shops run on rhythm, clear systems, solid numbers, and weekly check-ins. Predictability doesn’t kill creativity and freedom; it creates it. You need structure to scale.
A daily flow. Targets that actually mean something. Routines that keep you and your team accountable. Otherwise, you’ll keep spinning your wheels, wondering why nothing’s changing.
Stepping up here means running your barbershop like a real business, with intention, ownership, and expectations that are followed up on, not forgotten.
Try This:
Start each week with a 10-minute huddle. No excuses. What’s this week’s target? What’s the focus? Who needs support? A simple Monday check-in can align your whole week and boost performance more than any random pep talk ever could.
3. Lead Like You Mean It
This one’s big. Because your team will only ever reflect what you model. If you’re coasting, they’ll coast. If you avoid the tough chats, so will they. If you don’t lead with clarity and energy, they’ll show up distracted, disinterested, and disengaged.
Leadership isn’t about being the loudest. It’s about being consistent, clear and present. It’s about setting the tone in how you show up, how you communicate and how you call out what matters.
Want your team to raise their game? You’ve got to raise yours first. Stepping up means dropping the “one of the boys” act and becoming the leader your crew needs - even when it’s uncomfortable. Especially then.
Try This:
Ask each team member this week: “What’s one thing I can do better as your leader?”
Then stop talking and listen. Don’t defend. Don’t explain. Just hear them out. You’ll learn something and show them you’re serious about growth.
Final Thoughts
Let’s get real one last time.
You say you want more money. More time. And a team that gives a crap. A business that doesn’t rely on you 24/7.
Cool.
But that starts with you. You stepping up. You getting clear. You doing the uncomfortable work of leading like a boss, not hiding behind busywork.
This isn’t about being perfect. It’s about being present. About showing up with intention and acting on it consistently.
You can build the kind of barbershop that pays well, feels great to run, and gives you real options in life.
Or… you can keep waiting, watching, wishing — while someone else builds it.
Burnout in Barbering: How to Spot It, Stop It, and Step into a Healthier Future
Barbering is a high-energy, people-focused profession that demands precision, creativity, and connection — often all day, every day. But what happens when the tank runs dry?
BURNOUT.
It creeps in quietly: You feel flat, disconnected, easily irritated. Maybe your passion fades. Your body starts giving you signals - fatigue, sleep issues, gut trouble, brain fog. You might start skipping meals, relying on caffeine or crutches just to get through the day. And if you’re also a business owner, the pressure only magnifies.
I’ve lived this, both personally and professionally. And I’ve learned that if we want to show up as strong leaders, great teammates, and creative artists, we have to honour our health - physical, mental, and emotional.
How to Spot Burnout
Burnout doesn’t always look like a full breakdown. It can look like:
- Constant tiredness even after rest
- Losing interest in what you once loved
- Struggling to regulate emotions
- Avoiding conversations or clients
- Escaping into substances, screens, or emotional eating
These are not flaws. They are signals. And if we listen early, we can intervene before we break.
The Barber’s Toolbox for Wellbeing
1. Nutrition is Fuel, Not an Afterthought
Skipping meals or surviving on energy drinks and takeaway might be common in the shop — but long term, it’s a fast track to exhaustion. Our brain and body require nutrients to function well. Eating protein-rich breakfasts, hydrating through the day, and avoiding processed sugar highs and crashes can transform your energy and mental clarity.
2. Rest and Recovery Are Productive
I know hustle culture tells us to grind 24/7. But true performance comes from recovery. Whether it’s a full day off, a walk on the beach, or just unplugging from your phone after hours - it matters. Burnout doesn’t build businesses; rest does.
3. Mindfulness and Meditation
This isn’t just for monks. Even five minutes of stillness before you start the day can reset your nervous system. Practices like journaling, deep breathing, or guided meditations are tools to sharpen your awareness and ground your energy before you walk into the shop.
4. Connection and Real Conversations
Who are your people? The ones who lift you up and hold you accountable? Being in business - or just life - without connection can feel lonely. Find your circle or create one. A regular catch-up, a shared training session, even a quick phone call can realign your energy.
5. Boundaries Are Not Optional
Your time, your energy, your values - they need guardrails. Whether it’s setting hours where you don’t respond to messages or saying no to overcommitting, boundaries protect what matters. And once you set them, honour them. You’ll teach others to do the same.
Energy Is Your Currency
As barbers and business owners, our energy walks in the door before we do. It’s a frequency. When you’re burnt out, scattered, or running on fumes, that frequency affects your clients, your team, your brand. But when you’re aligned, grounded, and nourished - you’re magnetic.
That’s why I often say: Study the lifestyle of the people you admire. Not just their haircuts or awards - study their sleep, how they eat, how they train, how they think. Especially if you didn’t grow up around people who modelled those things. You can break cycles. You can lead new ones.
Ditch the Crutches
Many of us have relied on something to take the edge off - a glass of wine, a vape, a scroll, a joint. I’ve been there too. And I write this without judgment - only encouragement. Because the truth is: those crutches are often a plaster over unprocessed pain.
My mother passed away when I was in my twenties, she was a brilliant,
By Laura Banford
beautiful strong Irish woman, highly educated, worked full time with 5 children, but was described to me by the doctor as what is known as a functioning alcoholic. A term I think most women or men would be mortified to be classified as, I know she would have! it is a thing, and it is so common. Google the term - She gave until there was nothing left. She was too tired to keep being strong. I say this with reverence, not shame. It was burnout, the unhealed pain of losing my brother in a crash Christmas Eve 1996, and with no real support afterwards she returned to work and pushed through anyway.
We all know people that we work with are walking through problems at home. If coming to work can be an inspiration to be more health aware then that is an amazing opportunity.
We have a chance to do better. That’s our mission.
Your Body Knows
I’m someone who takes their health seriously and loves moving, but the high intensity stuff only ha-ha. In March, after a full-on Muay Thai camp in Thailand with my family, my body shut down. Total fatigue. I’d pushed too hard, for the last 2 years of training I’d been under-fuelled and underrested, and I paid for it. But with the help of an incredible naturopath and a homeopathic specialist, I’ve learned how to listen again. I’m healing.
And I’m not alone - this is the story of so many barbers and hairdressers working long days, skipping meals, carrying emotional labour. What you don’t feel now, you’ll feel later - in the form of anxiety, adrenal fatigue, addiction, or worse.
So, let’s make our health a priority - not a luxury. Because when we’re well, we create well. We lead well. We live well. Let this be a reminder: you’re allowed to slow down. To breathe. To heal. You are your most important tool - take care of yourself like you would your finest clippers.
Stay strong, Laura Banford

Why a Good Work Environment Really Matters!
By Simon Doyle
When I first got into barbering, I was mainly focused on learning how to do nice haircuts and fades, building a client base, and just getting better every day. But as time went on, I started realising there’s something else that makes a huge difference in this industry that no one really talks about enough: THE WORK ENVIRONMENT.
It’s easy to overlook when you’re focused on the technical stuff or going somewhere “cool” to get your name out there but where you work and who you work with can have a serious impact on how you feel and how long you’ll actually want to keep doing it.
There’s a cool quote that I love & I’ll drop it here. “Sometimes winning means knowing when to quit”
It’s More Than Just a Job
For most of us, the barbershop isn’t just where we clock in and out. We spend hours there, day after day. We’re talking to people constantly, standing on our feet, trying to stay focused while juggling clients and conversations. That takes energy.
When the shop has a solid, positive energy, it’s easier to enjoy that daily grind. You don’t feel like you’re just surviving the shift, you’re part of something. You’ve got people around you who want to see you grow. You can have a laugh, ask questions without feeling stupid, and actually look forward to coming in. Work doesn’t feel like work. That kind of environment makes the hard days manageable, and the good days even better.
The Wrong Environment Drains You
On the other hand, being in a shop where the energy is off, even if the haircuts are great and the place looks cool. It can burn you out fast. If there’s no leadership, poor management or just no communication, it gets stressful.
It makes it harder to focus, to grow, and to enjoy what you’re doing. Over time, you might start doubting yourself, keeping your head down, and
losing that excitement you had when you first started. I’ve been in that kind of space, and trust me it wears you down, even if you love the craft. It’s even made me question “is this industry for me?”.
What Makes a Good Environment?
It’s not about everything being perfect and looking “cool” or “aesthetic. Trust me, making somewhere look good for content will not fix deep rooted leadership issues.
A good work environment is about respect, support, and open communication. It’s about being around people who help each other, want to grow, and celebrate each other’s wins.
It’s also about feeling like you belong. Whether you’re the newest apprentice or a senior barber, you should feel like your presence matters. When people are kind, check in with each other, and actually care it makes a massive difference.
Why It’s Worth Caring About
If you’re early in your career, you might think you just have to “put up with it” if the energy is off. But you don’t. You deserve to work in a place that supports your growth, not one that holds you back. A good environment can help you improve faster, stay motivated, and enjoy the journey a whole lot more.
At the end of the day, barbering is about connection and that starts with the environment you work in. So, if you find a shop with a good vibe, appreciate it. If you haven’t yet, don’t settle. Where you work matters just as much as what you do.
