I’ve Timed Out Scott Wakefield Wow! MnUSA received some incredible exposure at Hay Days in a couple of ways. First off, when the most people at Hay Days were at the most concentrated area at one time, prior to the unveiling of the new 858 motor, Troy Halverson of Arctic Cat asked the large audience to “Raise your hand if you’re a member of a club.” I’d have to guess 95% of the hands went up. Troy continued, “And, if you’re a member of a club, that’s great. Because if it wasn’t for the clubs putting in 21,000 miles of trails here in Minnesota, none of this would be here, (pointing to the sleds) and none of you would be here (pointing to the crowd) because without clubs and MnUSA none of this would exist.” He continued on, “MnUSA has a booth over in the trees by the food court; I’d encourage you to go join MnUSA and do it today. Now for the unveiling.” Nice timing Troy! And thank you so much from all of us at MnUSA!

Second, the American Council of Snowmobile Associations (ACSA) held a youth snowmobile involvement meeting Sunday morning at our MnUSA booth at Hay Days. The meeting was attended by manufacturer reps, Ambassadors, state snowmobile leadership, young snowmobilers with the WI youth club KAOS, MnUSA youth club members, and ACSA representatives. They discussed the youth survey being conducted by ACSA, and organized snowmobiling and the impacts of US Forest Service changes, the Biden 30x30 plan to set aside 30% of federal land and waters by 2030 and to exclude snowmobiles on those lands, which would close millions of acres of riding areas to snowmobilers! Manufacturer Ambassadors agreed a unified message would be best and they offered their assistance in sharing information on their social media outlets. Having snowmobile racers Levi LeValle and Chris Burant in attendance at our booth sure helped to raise the level of excitement and popularity in our booth Sunday morning. Trail time is around the corner. Due to the drought in most of Minnesota, corn has matured very quickly this year, only second to the soybeans. Every day over 60 degrees with a 5 mile per hour wind, corn will lose a percent of moisture. Corn is typically 20-23% before harvest and needs to dry down to a final moisture content of 15-16 % for safe storage. You can do the math in your head, based on the number of 60-degree days with wind, how quickly fields can dry down and corn is harvested. Looking at the extended forecast, and being in an El Niño now, trails should be in well before the Dec. 1st Trail Opening and we should have a very enjoyable fall this year. As with every year, looking at trail re-routes is a neverending issue in my area. I have four active re-routes I’m working on now, attending township/city meetings, and soon to the county; meeting with “NEW” landowners, explaining the benefits of having a trail on their property, and finally getting a signature on a trail permit. Hoping all your re-routes go well. It’s an education process. Well, this is my last column as your President. I’ve “timed out,” as they say per the bylaws, so I must leave. When I started this job, it was like diving forty feet off a cliff in a cereal bowl of water, and some days like drinking out of a fire hose, if that’s even a thing anymore. And not much has changed. There is a lot of work to be done. Yet it will be a nice change to step off the front lines, so to speak, for a bit. I won’t be far, as I fall into the Director at Large designation similar to an immediate past president. I will be serving as an advisor and a member of the Executive Board, and I’m under the direction of the “NEW” President. I will become a delegate to ACSA and ISC and chair of the elections/nominations committee. And at this point I’m still the chair of the Communications Committee, so keep those club news stories coming in. Maybe you’ll see a new column in your next issue of Minnesota Snowmobiling magazine. Is This the End… of Timmy? Tim Heinen Ah, November—the time of year when it will finally cool down. I am tired of the “weather you can wear”—all that heat and humidity, bye-bye for now. Time for sweatshirts. As you read this article the Fall Workshop has come and gone. What a record turnout we had. Over 150 in attendance. The Safety Instructor Training was maxed out and we had to turn people down. The bus to the Faribault Woolen Mill and Winery was full, so we had to turn people away for that too. I feel bad about doing that, turning them down, but we can only handle so many people, We, Region 6, just didn’t expect that type of turn out. I hope that all the members had a good time and did learn something from the seminars that we as a Region had put together. As I reflect back a year ago, Region 6 wanted to make this Workshop as affordable as possible so more members would come. I think that our strategy worked, and it shows. With hard work and constant calling, emails, and persistence the funds can be raised to make this event happen. One thing I must say that since becoming Vice President, and not really having been involved before as other Directors and Board Members have been for years, I was a fresh pair of eyes coming in, and as I learned how things operated and how things were being done. I could see that there was going to be a lot of work to do. How we operated in years past just doesn’t meet the standards with how we should be operating today. I couldn’t get all the things I wanted to do, done. Now that we have a new e-Board, what happens next? What happens with my work and ideas? Well for me, with the
blessing of the new e-Board I wish to continue to work on the projects that I wanted to get done, especially the new website with membership management. This is something that MnUSA needs to attract new/younger members. I have received pushback from some, but more importantly, I have had more support to push forward. I understand there are some who don’t like change. They like how it was, which in turn just isn’t working that way anymore. We need to be more efficient. People today like instant gratification; they want answers when searching for information or when they call. This summer, and it took a while, we did hire an Office Administrator, Kelly. She will be a great asset to MnUSA. Hopefully you had a chance to meet her at the Fall Workshop. She and I are on the same page with moving forward to making MnUSA better and stronger, but we will need the support of all the Board of Directors. Hopefully we made that clear in the last meeting. Now with the Fall Workshop in my review mirror, I will need to get back to my local trails here in Lakeville. As with a lot of clubs, trails change, and we are not short of that happening out here. This is always a challenge. Speaking of trails, I saw quite a few people at the Trail Signage Seminar. I hope that you listened, took notes, and hopefully when I go riding the trails, I can leave my binoculars at home. Getting Outside Doug Franzen
Like many of you, I walk just about every day. Doctors tell us its good for our health and it settles the mind. I’m fortunate to live in a place that has woods, lakes and many animals as my neighbors. Sometimes I walk with my wife but usually alone. I’m amazed every day by our good fortune to live in a state as beautiful as Minnesota. In September, my wife and I walked for 6 days straight on the Camino de Santiago Compostela in Spain. We met people from all over the world on our walk and developed a camaraderie with them in our common purpose. It was so inspiring and spiritual. Without a doubt, the most gorgeous walk I have ever been on.
kids in Greater Minnesota get out and ride. However, I’m really concerned about kids in the metro area. Young folks seem to have well developed thumbs from constantly working their phones but are really lagging in muscle development and, more importantly, experiencing the joy of being outdoors. The DNR is doing all sorts of stuff to coax kids outdoors in all seasons. That’s a great thing. MnUSA provides snowmobile safety training for thousands of kids every year. We are focused on youth-orientedclubs, and we are making progress. Yet, we need to do more, and our best ideas are always given birth at the local level. It’s time to get cracking! Not everyone who tries it will love snowmobiling. Not everybody loves walking.
Sometimes when I’m snowmobiling, the same inspiration comes. When the sun is rising or setting through the birch trees, I feel at peace and happy. I know you know exactly what I’m talking about. This feeling is one reason why we fight so hard to protect and grow our sport. The beauty of a Minnesota winter, the camaraderie with other riders, the stories after a ride, and the fun on the trail and with each other. That’s why we ride. It makes me sad that many of our elected officials who hold the fate of our sport in their hands have never experienced this feeling. There is something glorious and insane about spending a day outside in winter weather and loving it. By now you know the point of this article. It’s up to you to give the gift of snowmobiling to your elected officials. They need to know more about us and what we do. We have a great story to tell. In the early 1980’s, Governor Rudy Perpich attended the first Governor’s (now VIP) ride. Every Governor since then, apart from Jesse Ventura and Tim Walz, have continued the tradition. Governor Walz doesn’t know what he’s missing. A second group needs to get outside and on the trail. That group is our kids and grandkids. I’m hopeful that November 2023

When snowmobilers from across the state get together to rendezvous at Thumper Pond in Ottertail the weekend of February 8-11, 2024, MnUSA will recognize a club, dealer, family, individuals and youth for their contributions to the sport of snowmobiling. Minnesota’s vast snowmobile trail system exists today because of a network of volunteers. If you know of a deserving snowmobiler, club or dealer in your area, you can find the 2023 award nomination forms on the MnUSA website under Programs. Making snowmobiling enjoyable for the family’s younger members by Christina Davies A few years ago, when my family and I moved to Minnesota and started snowmobiling, we wanted to make it a family affair. There was no guidance, however, on how to accomplish this goal with young children. Experienced snowmobilers told us to just wait until the children were older. My vision of happy winter snowmobile outings began to fade and was replaced with pictures in my mind of snow clothes and gear, freezing temperatures, disgruntled children, and exhausted parents. Undeterred by the pessimism of others, I was determined to make this work for our family and over time I developed

a successful strategy to enable snowmobiling to be an enjoyable family activity. This article outlines what I learned over the past four years of snowmobiling with our young family and about preplanning, comfort, snacks, memories, and expectations.
( PREPLANNING
I spend a significant amount of time looking at where we should go. I study maps, preplan in Ride Command, ask in Facebook groups, message snowmobile clubs, and talk to the hotel/lodge where we would stay. I try to address the following questions: 1) How much time is spent on the ice? This is usually not as enjoyable for children as it can be very windy with not much to look at. Some children are also nervous on the ice. They know there is water underneath and if there are slushy conditions, this can scare them.

2) What are the conditions of the trails? Are there a lot of moguls? This is no problem for adults, we can stand up on our sled as we speed over them, but the child riding behind or in a snowcoach cannot and they take the brunt of each bounce. This leaves children exhausted with head and neck aches as their heavy helmets bounce around. 3) Are there food options on the trail? Kids love when they know they are headed for food and it gives them a break from riding on the sled and a chance to take off the helmet. Also,
who doesn’t feel awesome walking into a restaurant in their snowmobile gear? 4) Is there something interesting to see or visit? For example, on a recent snowmobile trip through Voyagers National Park, we found out that the Rainy Lake Visitor Center is open on the weekends during the winter. The children were able to talk to the Ranger, watch a short film, and look through the museum. They were given Junior Ranger books with things to search for as we snowmobiled in the park and received a badge and patch when we returned. 5) What is the weather prediction for the timeframe of the trip? Yes, adults can do 200 miles in -20 but my five-yearold is not going to enjoy that. We always look for the good weather windows so we can keep their experience positive. 6) Are we leaving from home or will we be staying in a hotel/lodge/cabin? If we are staying somewhere, we look for a place that has a pool for when we get back from the ride. This is a great incentive for when we return and gives the children something else to do on their “snowmobiling vacation.” On our last snowmobiling trip, we stayed at the Grand Ely Lodge. We could leave on trails directly from the lodge, eat on site, and swim in the pool late into the night. The kids could not have been happier.

(thermal underwear and fleece layers) and their snow pants and jacket withstand the cold, wind, and wet snow. I find snowmobile jackets/pants that have reflective material on them. In the dark, they will shine brightly when any light is pointed on them. For the younger children, the full zip up snowsuits have worked the best. I make sure not to forget a balaclava or neck gaiter for under their helmet to keep their neck warm and make sure no wind hits them on the back of the neck. We have found that full helmets work much better than an open helmet with goggles. The full helmet keeps their nose and cheeks much warmer…because no young child seems to be able to keep a balaclava up over their noses for an entire ride. I usually bring extra gloves, balaclavas, and neck gaiters just in case we need to change any out. When we pull the youngest children in a snowcoach, we add blankets and hot water bottles. We also have radios in our helmets so that everyone can talk back and forth. This adds an added complication of wires in the helmets and the opportunity for excessive chatting during our beautiful ride through the woods…but the children love the interaction with us and the ability to point out everything we pass.
can last in even the most frigid conditions. Feet and hands get the best boots and gloves I can find. I have hand and foot warmers if needed. Often, I put these in at the beginning so we do not get to the point where everyone has cold toes and we are trying to warm them up. They need good socks (we usually use Darn Tough or SmartWool). We have snow pants that have the inside part that can button over their boots. When we stop–they will most likely step into the deep snow, no matter how many times we warn them not to. I do not want cold snow going into their boots, melting, and making them miserable. Nothing will stop a snowmobile trip faster than cold feet. They are layered up under their snow gear
When we trailer and park, the kids stay in the warm car until the snowmobiles are unloaded and ready to go. Only then do we have them put on their snowgear (while still in the car). Finally, we put on their helmets, lift them onto the sled or into the snowcoach, and off we go. We do not let them play outside in the cold while we get the sleds ready. Our kids are drawn to the snow banks and end up covered in snow–and then cold–before we have even set off down the trail.
( SNACKS
I cannot emphasize this point enough. Children run on snacks. The more available, the better. We choose snacks they don’t usually get so that it is a special occasion when we snowmobile and stop for snacks. We have large Stanley thermoses that keep water hot for hot chocolate or apple cider. The individual packets work best so the large can of hot chocolate does not pop its top during the ride. We use either wooden or plastic cups. We DO NOT use the fancy cups that

keep drinks warm. They do just that—they stay piping hot for a long time and the children have to wait for 30 minutes just to drink it. I want this to be a quick snack stop. We try not to forget a spoon to stir the drinks and we have some bottles of water—it is amazing how thirsty everyone gets. If the trail has options for stopping at a restaurant to get food, that is even better. Our children can last much longer when
they know they are heading for a meal stop. This gives them a chance to warm up, take off their heavy helmet, and walk around. Never underestimate the power of stopping for a treat!

I always want those perfect pictures of the whole family out snowmobiling so that I can look back on the moment for years to come. To do this, a tripod is a necessity. Otherwise,

the phone or camera will drop into a snowbank instead of staying nicely balanced on a log or tree stump. Without it, the process will take forever, and we lose the kids to something more exciting than waiting for the family picture. It does not have to be an expensive or heavy tripod. The tripod just needs to be able to stand and hold the phone, camera, or GoPro. We take the family picture at the beginning of the trip or when everyone is happy from the first snack stop. As the ride continues, everyone becomes less excited about getting out to pose for a photo. We get those photo shotswhile everything is still fun. The phone battery life also decreases quickly in the cold weather–just another reason to get the picture at the beginning. When we get home, we put the snowmobile trip pictures on our digital picture frames or print one out to hang up in the house. Our children love seeing it and the opportunity to tell others about their trip. I also use an app called 1SE. It is a video/photo journaling app that allows me to add 1 second videos and pictures to a project producing a great 1- to 2-minute video of our adventures. The video can then be easily texted to family and friends to show them a short snapshot of the trip.
( EXPECTATIONS
This is the most important element. EVERYTHING will take much longer than if we were traveling with a group of adults. It takes a lot of time and energy to get everyone dressed to go

out. We cannot go as fast as we normally would. I have had to come to the realization that we will not be doing 200 miles–I might do all this work for 20 miles, and I have to be okay with that. We look at the maps and see what our options are for turning around earlier if children are tired or going longer if everyone seems in good spirits. On our family rides, we currently average 40 miles, and this takes around 4 hours. When we plan the route, we estimate 10 mph when we have the snowcoach. Without it, we estimate 20 mph. We were riding outside of Ely and had great plans to ride to a specific bridge where we could take a break along the river. Two miles from the bridge, the logging road became straight dirt

and gravel. We were so close—yet so far. We knew we had to turn around. Thankfully, my husband, on our route planning, mentally noted “bail out” routes in case of meltdowns from cold children—which also worked when the trail deteriorated. The bottom line is that we want this to be a positive experience so that we can do it together again as a family. If we push too hard or too long, no one will want to do it again. It is the difference between the journey and the destination. We adults snowmobile for the journey, enjoying the trails and scenery. Putting on as many miles as we can. Young kids are in it for the destination. That destination can be as simple as a snack stop or as exciting as staying in a lodge with a swimming pool that they can enjoy after the ride.
( CONCLUSION
So, snowmobiling with children can be done—and done successfully. We began four years ago on familiar trails in our area. We tested how long everyone could last and slowly built up the time on the trails. Now we can trailer our snowmobiles up north for the week and ride in remote areas where none of us have been before. Next winter, we are ready to load everyone up and head out for new areas to explore together!

MnUSA Announces Recipients of Three Scholarships
Minnesota United Snowmobilers Association announced the recipients of the 2023 scholarships in the September issue of Minnesota Snowmobiling. Recipients are Sienna Houle of Baxter, Samantha Solied of Belle Plaine and Jaylynn Frandrup of Hastings. The MnUSA Scholarship Program was established to assist members and children of members in pursuing post-secondary education in college and vocational programs. Scholarship recipients are selected by a committee on the basis of their essay on what they would do to educate and stop riders of all ages and experience levels from trespassing and to stay on the trails; academic achievement; leadership; participation in school, snowmobile and community activities; work experience; and two outside references. Funds for the scholarship program are provided through donations and by the Fund Raising Committee. The Nicollet County Trails Association donated $1,000 in memory of their member Jackie Johnson, a very active member of the club and MnUSA, and also a member of the American Council of Snowmobile Associations’ 2013 Snowmobile Family of the Year.

The MnUSA scholarship program will be continued in 2024. Details will be announced in November with applications due by March 31, 2024. Application forms will be available on MnUSA’s website under Programs. Over the next few issues the essays of the 2023 scholarship recipients will be reprinted in Minnesota Snowmobiling. This issue we are featuring an essay from Sienna Houle. Sienna graduated from Pillager High School in Pillager, MN in May 2023 and plans to study Environmental Studies at Bemidji State University. She is an active member of the Brainerd Snodeos Snowmobile Club and helps with trail maintenance and signage. Her high school activities include Knowledge Bowl, Track & Field, Student Council, National Honor Society and Art Club. Sienna volunteered for many community activities and was on the Superior Honor Roll. Sienna is the daughter of Steve Houle and Anna Houle Todd and is the recipient of a $1700 scholarship.

Youth News Sienna, “What would you do to educate and stop riders of all ages and experience levels from trespassing and to stay on the trails?” There are over 220,000 snowmobiles that are registered in the state of Minnesota. This high number shows how large of a passion there is for snowmobiling in our state. Many of these snowmobilers are involved in local clubs to groom, brush, and put up signage for their local snowmobile trails. They volunteer their time to ensure trails can be enjoyed by fellow snowmobile enthusiasts. Their clubs work with the state and landowners to organize over 20,000 miles of snowmobile trails in Minnesota, about half of which are on privately owned lands. The generosity of the landowners is what allows Minnesota to have as many trails as we do for riders. It’s important for riders to be respectful to these landowners if we want to continue to utilize their lands. However, many riders are disrespectful to the landowners by trespassing. A prime example of this is when snowmobilers leave the trail to play around in an open area. Under the snow, this could be a tilled field or a golf course. This needs to change if we want to continue to enjoy the sport of snowmobiling in Minnesota. Our riders’ ages are widely spread out making it difficult to educate everyone about the importance of staying on the trails with a single approach. The younger snowmobile
audience can be targeted by emphasizing a section in the snowmobile certificate training regarding the laws of staying on the trail and respecting the land volunteered by landowners. We can reach everyone by posting more signage, more consistently on our trails to make snowmobilers aware that they are riding on private land and help direct them on the trails. Informational postcards can be sent out with snowmobile license renewals reminding riders of trespassing laws including updated fines. The Minnesota House of Representatives is discussing increasing the fines for trespassing since this is such a serious issue. These fines are more than doubling for each offense and are going to be used to enforce these laws in the future. These postcards need to reach all snowmobile owners of Minnesota, so having them available at different events will reach a larger audience. A booth could be set up at snowmobile gatherings like grass drags and swap meets to give out these postcards. When purchasing a snowmobile at snowmobile dealerships, these postcards could be handed out as another helpful reminder to respect our trails, especially those through private property. A section on snowmobile maps could also be dedicated to information about trespassing. Additionally, a weekend could be coordinated among local clubs for informational stops along the trails. Club members could make connections, answer questions and discuss trespassing laws with riders.

These are all possible options to implement, educate, and protect our trails. The sport of snowmobiling is extremely meaningful to my family. I have many relatives that have been snowmobile racers, and my dad has been a member of our local snowmobile club for 30 years, and president for a total of 20 of them. Because of my mom’s family of snowmobile racers, and my dad’s involvement with the Brainerd Snodeos, I was given the opportunity to grow up around snowmobiles. We stay on trails to respect the generous landowners who allow the trails to cross through their lands in hopes that the trails will be continued the following season. In my area, a local

trail that crossed through private land was shut down because of disrespectful riders. Now, snowmobilers have to ride 10 miles further. When a trail shuts down, the snowmobile club must find a replacement for that section of trail and clear it of trees and debris. If a new section can not be found to replace the shut down trail, that opens up another challenging issue. This is just one example of how important it is to stay on the trail. One snowmobiler’s choice to trespass affects the entire snowmobiling community. To ensure the future enjoyment of snowmobiling in the beautiful state of Minnesota, please stay on the trail.

DESTINATION Region 4 by Sheri Gades, Rodney Boesch, Daniel Boddy & Brandon Ronning
Region 4 is in the lower west third of the state to the Iowa border. There are approximately 4.496 total groomed miles of trails. Trails run through farm fields, pastures, road ditches, riverbeds, and tree lines. They are for the most part, flat landers! They have 30 clubs in the area. There are corridor trails running the region from Iowa border to Canada. Clubs work with landowners to get permission to put trails on their property. All the trails are maintained by volunteers. Quite a few clubs in Region 4 have been in existence for 50 years or more. That is a testament to the dedication to the sport of snowmobiling.
Amboy Snowbirds
In southern Blue Earth County, the trails run along the Blue Earth River bottoms and skirt the river bluffs and woods. In Swift County and Lac qui Parle County, most of the trails run through pastures, fields, and tree lines. There is the opportunity to see quite a lot of wildlife while riding. Since clubs are fairly spread out in the Region, the trails meet up on the county borders. Bonfires are common when on a club ride. There is nothing like roasting a few hot dogs and sharing stories with other riders, and nothing like seeing an entire family out enjoying the sport. Clubs raise money for groomers, buildings, and charity by doing different events. Bingo, raffles, food stands, demo derby, and silent auctions are just a few of the ways clubs raise the funds necessary to maintain trails, groomers, and all the costs associated with having equipment. Region 4 hosted the Fall Workshop in Fairmont. In southern Blue Earth County, the Amboy Snowbirds maintain a trail system that covers about 180 miles. The trail began in the late 1960s as just a few miles and has grown and expanded over the years to what it has today. The communities connected by the trail they maintain are Amboy, Vernon Center, Good Thunder, Mapleton, and Minnesota Lake. All 22

towns have food and fuel available. A feature of the system is Blue Earth River and the trail that runs through the river bottom woodlands and farm fields on both sides of the river. They directly connect to neighboring trail systems in the surrounding counties of Faribault, Martin, Watonwan, and Waseca. The Snowbirds have annually sponsored a club/vintage ride on the river bottom trail with a cookout along the trail in the woods.

The Blue Earth Snow Rovers maintain 75 + miles of groomed trails in the Faribault County countryside, featuring fun-winding trails along the river and branching out to area communities with great food establishments and opportunity to link up to great neighboring snowmobile clubs! The Blizzard Snowmobile Club was formed in 1968. From the beginning they have promoted the sport of snowmobiling as a safe and fun activity for the whole family. Volunteers yearly educate the youth in the safe operation of a snowmobile. In the early 1990s, 100 miles of groomed snowmobile trails were established in Martin County. They connect with Iowa trails to the south and other surrounding counties that lead to many other trail systems.
The Appleton Ridge Runner Snowmobile Club had trails in Lac qui Parle and three other surrounding counties. They maintain 180 miles of trails. Back in 2019, they celebrated their 50th year with a supper and dance at the fairgrounds. They recently participated in the Apple Fest parade with a float and candy toss. Every year they hold a safety class for the youth in the surrounding area. They have had kids come from over 100 miles to attend. This club loves to have family rides since they feel the kids are the future of this sport. Many of their trails run through tree lines, pastures, river bottoms and some road ditches.

Northern Lights Snowmobile Club maintains 150 miles of trail and has a corridor trail that runs from Iowa to Canada going through the middle of the county. It was established by a few local people feeling the need to have established trails
that families can enjoy. Northern Lights covers central and eastern Swift County and southern Pope. Cities in their trail system include Benson, Danvers, Clontarf, Hancock, DeGraff, Murdock, Kerkhoven, Sunburg and Swift Falls.

The Crow River Sno Pros over by Hutchinson maintain approximately 175 miles of trails including two old railroad lines. They recently held their annual landowner picnic and served approximately 200 people. The Nicollet County Trails Association (NCTA) was established in 1983 with approximately 165 miles of club and grant-in-aid trails. NCTA members maintain their trail system with three different types of equipment—a Puma Series Case IH Tractor with tracks, a Tucker Sno Cat and an ASV for light and in town grooming. NCTA has approximately 80 members and regularly holds meetings once a month from September through April.

Through the course of the season, NCTA conducts several community events, starting out the season with a booth at Hay Days. In October they hold a Vintage Snowmobile Show in conjunction with St. Peter’s Octoberfest, and at the end of October they host the Mill Pond Haunted Hayride around Halloween weekend. The month of November is spent getting ready for the riding season. Maintenance is done on equipment and signs are repaired. The NTCA trail system, which includes ditches, fields and wooded areas, is disked and rolled, then signed for the upcoming riding season. In the early part of the season, several members from the club put on youth snowmobile safety training. The Sibley County Drift Dodgers has about 35 active club members that help put on the club’s very popular Radar Run and Vintage Show every February. In addition, this year they have also added Vintage Drag Races and a swap meet on the same weekend. For this coming year, the drag races will be on Saturday, February 10th, 2024, and the Radar Run, Vintage Show and other events will be Sunday, February 11th, 2024, all held in Gaylord, MN on Lake Titlow. Starting last year, the Sibley County Drift Dodgers put on a Vintage Show for the ArliDazzle parade. The AriDazzle is known as “probably the largest lighted holiday parade” in Minnesota. This will be held on Saturday, December 2nd, 2023, in downtown Arlington. The Sibley County Drift Dodgers have a decorated Tucker Sno Cat in the parade. Thanks to the Sibley County Drift Dodger’s President Brandon Ronning and all the club’s members for keeping snowmobiling alive and well in their community. There are 30 snowmobile clubs in MnUSA’s Region 4. Come and ride with them!

December 1st officially starts the riding season— providing there is snow. NCTA hosts club and community rides utilizing their NCTA warming shack that is dedicated to lost riders and riding their trails and neighboring trail systems. January brings the annual Radar Run that has been held for over 20 years. At the beginning of February, they hold a weekend-long club trip, and mid-February they host a Lost Riders Fun Run supporting local establishments and honoring lost riders. Their season ends in April with a pork chop feed, thanking the many landowners for allowing NTCA’s trails to cross their lands. This also allows them to keep in contact with landowners and create good standing relationships between snowmobilers and landowners. The Sibley County Drift Dodgers club has 150 miles of trails and was formed in 1970, celebrating its 50th a few years ago. It is a 501c3 club but does not have any charitable gambling. Most of the 150 miles are grant in aid, but some are also club trails. All trails are groomed by about a dozen volunteer club members using three Tucker Sno Cats.

Racing News Unfortunate Racing News Travis Muller, former Arctic Cat racer from Windom, Minnesota, profiled here in Minnesota Snowmobiling Racing News a few years back, was involved in a devastating farm accident recently. Travis stated he was helping clean out a grain bin when he fell into the auger, crushing both legs. Luckily there was someone there to help him immediately, but his resulting injuries required a helicopter flight to New Ulm for a blood transfusion, then on to the Twin Cities for further care. Unfortunately, according to his CaringBridge site, both of Muller’s legs had to be amputated, one above the knee, as he was close to dying of his injuries. He will need to have additional surgeries. A GoFundMe site has been established by his family and friends. All of us here at MnUSA wish Travis a fast and successful recovery. In getting to know Travis better during our interview, with his wife and kids and father in attendance, we know family will be there for him. With his fighting spirit and today’s medical technology, who knows what Travis’s future will bring. We wish him all the luck in this next journey. – Scott Wakefield

Celebration & Recognition of Founding Members

On August 12, the Amboy Snowbirds held a club gathering to celebrate and recognize the members who started the club in 1971. The party was held at the Snowbirds Event Center in Amboy. There were five of the six remaining club officers, board members and publicity chairman from the first two years who were in attendance as well as several other members from the early years. They also enjoyed having former members who belonged to the club over the past 52 years come back to join everyone.
The group enjoyed burgers and brats grilled and served by current members, looking at some vintage sleds on display as well as club scrapbooks and photos. Most of those in attendance came and stayed for the entire four hours of the event sharing stories and enjoying conversation. Members talked about the changes over the past 52 years from a handful of trail miles in the local woods to the 180 miles that the club currently maintains; various attempts at making a groomer to the two Tuckers currently in use; the many club trips both summer and winter; and the many fundraisers the club has been involved in over the years. It was an enjoyable time to remember the past and look to the future.
