Gratitude From the MnUSA President

Gratitude: Readiness to show appreciation and the quality of being thankful. And thankful, and appreciative that we, and that’s a big we, pulled off Rendezvous 2023! When you start something like this, you know the negative, is you’re going to forget someone, so I’m going to apologize right up front. I’m sorry if I missed recognizing you; it was not intended. A little CYA can get you a long way.

Now, let’s get to the thank-yous.To Greg Sorenson, past president, for taking the initiative to have a Rendezvous in 2023 and getting me hooked up with Grand Casino in Hinckley. To Gordon Heitke for keeping me on track, and really the team of Greg and Gordon to produce the riding at Rendezvous, and it was spectacular, by the way. Knowing this was going to be my last Rendezvous as your President, I wanted to ride. I should’ve really stayed back and helped with registration and compiling the items for the live auction Saturday night.

My next big thank-you goes to all the volunteers who worked the registration desk and compiled those live auction items so I could go and have fun! To Cheryl Clevenger…what in the world would I do without Cheryl Clevenger? And the lucky thing is (and it’s a lucky thing) you get Mike

Clevenger with Cheryl. What dedication to this association and this sport the Clevengers have.

Thanks to VP Tim Heinen, who will do just about anything I ask him to do, which is pretty darn cool; to Janet and Woody Widness, always at the ready—they just get it—you never have to tell them twice how to do something. Also, Mark and Cathy LaBaw. When Cathy wasn’t dancing with the live auction items, she was diligently working the registration booth. Scotty Harder, getting the vendors lined up, and getting a 2023 Tucker SnoCat, and one of the best drags money can buy, to our event. Scotty never shies away from hard work. He embraces it. Terry Hutchinson, for his time and dedication to make the event successful. Tim Pommier, always early, always helping, and I got him to smile once or twice. Diane and Mark Gray, thanks for the help on the live auction, and willingness; Jack Hinsley, local groomer extraordinaire, and really helped with lining up leads and sweeps working with Greg and Gordon.

To all the sponsors, vendors, and live auction item donators, (see a separate thank-you ad on page 12) and those who got the donations—close to $4,000 Saturday night from the live auction. And it would’ve never happened without the knowledge of Nancy Hanson’s mind, from someone that has planned like 15 of these before. Thanks Nancy!

And of course, Peggy and her crew at Grand Casino. And finally to all those who showed up. We had a blast. I wonder some days what all those people trying to go to Tobies Saturday morning at about 9:15 am thought, when 66 snowmobiles in a row were crossing in front of them, or those watching us cross over I-35—that was cool! Thanks to the local club members who provided great groomed trails and guides and sweeps for the rides; and the Steinmueller brothers, Mark, for being a great lead, and brother, Joel, a great sweep for my group-go team purple tape-on Saturday’s guided rides. I can’t wait till next year. “Ride More in 2024!”

And I’m still running…up to Gilbert for the DeLyle Pankratz Dedication, Scotty Harder’s Groomer Show in Orrock, and then to Rod Boesch’s Amboy Sno-Birds big party and drawing in Amboy.Besides Rendezvous, it’s been a busy month. Got some riding in with the wife—78 miles according to Ride Command, 2 hours and 40 minutes. Soon it will be gone, so enjoy the snow while it lasts.

Speaking of lasts, I’m now doing that—my last Rendezvous, my last Spring Meeting, my last Summer Event, my last Fall Workshop—as your President. We will need nominations for all positions coming up at the summer event, so start thinking about who’s going to step up. Scotty Harder is your new Safety Committee Chairman; thanks for stepping up.We need a few more Scotty Harders, so now is the time.Step up and be a part of the best snowmobile association in the Midwest!

What a great “snowy” season we have had. Sure, there were a few days of rain in January, and February. I mean come on rain during the middle of winter? Why doesn’t it snow in July? I would much like to see that happen. Then also in February we had a week of 40+ degrees, what’s with that? Weather being weather didn’t slow down any of the events that happened this season, all with record attendance. Speaking of attendance, the Winter Rendezvous had a great turn out. Great riding, thanks to a few people and clubs that were able to come together and pull it off.

There were so many club events happening all over the State that I was unable to attend many of the events due to scheduling conflicts. (Sorry everyone). There is always next year, and I will make sure my schedule is open. I did go on many trips, and I did stop in to visit different clubs when they had an open house. One that I remember the most was the Swampsiders in Bigfork. Our group was coming in just as the event was winding down, but they welcomed us with open arms. What a great group and thanks for the warm-up and hotdogs. We ate what was leftover, no shyness here.

As we wind down another season, we still have work to do. Legislation still has work to do, clubs still have work to do with trails. Snowmobiling is becoming a year-round work effort by volunteers. The latest count on membership is increasing, but the volunteers stepping in to help seems to be fewer in some areas. Meaning, that when I hear that other clubs have stepped in to help other clubs with their work, I should say that it is a great thing that other clubs want to step up to the plate and help, but it should not be that way. Club members should be volunteering their time. Stories I hear from the various clubs is that they have only a few people that go

out to clear down trees, and they average maybe 2 miles a day. Now consider they have 100 miles of trails to clear, the math on that pretty much tells me that the whole season is spent clearing and cleaning up the trails, while thousands of riders are out there complaining that the trails aren’t cleared out. I know that writing about this problem in the magazine won’t get the word out, but you as a club need to push more on your members to volunteer. I know that we are all busy in our lives, but one weekend to set aside will make a world of difference. Let’s all work on this for next season. Get the word out.

One other thing is that we as a club need to do and should do is keep in touch with your local legislators, and city officials. I know the season is winding down, but things are always happening and changing during the summer. Invite them out for a ride on a sled, or even take them out on the groomer for a short ride to show them what our winter recreational activity is all about. Speaking of Groomer Ride, I took the new Tucker Groomer out for a drive at the Winter Rendezvous. Very nice; it does get your heart pumping. I also drove the new Pisten Bully at the Mille Lacs Groomer/Drag show and have to say one would have to flip a coin at least 10 times as to which one to buy (if you’re looking that is).

Until next issue, have fun ice skating with your sled!

Session Update Legislative News

Christian Franzen

While the legislature will not adjourn until late May, the first deadline is coming quickly. Bills must be passed by all policy committees in the house of origin by March 10th. Bills not meeting this deadline will not move forward this year. With the February forecast of a $17.5 billion dollar surplus, the legislature is moving at full speed beginning to focus its attention on taxing and spending. One reason for this focus and speed is that it is a budget year. Committees will use much of the remaining time to focus on money, including the configuration of the nine omnibus spending bills.

So where does this leave MnUSA’s priorities? Our first session priority is our bill which modernizes snowmobile registrations (including sled transfer of ownership, registration decals) and road crossings. In the Senate this bill is SF31 (Jasinski) which passed by the Senate in a unanimous vote and then was sent to the House of Representatives.

The House companion, HF609, is authored by Environment Committee Chairman Rep. Rick Hanson. MnUSA testified in committee hearing and received a warm reception. Perhaps our author being the Chairman of the committee helped. The language was laid over for possible inclusion in the House Omnibus Environment bill. In committee, we successfully advocated that our language be amended to include our bill to increase the criminal penalties for snowmobile and off-road trespass. The amendment simply makes sure that criminal penalties match or exceed that of the civil penalties trespass law we passed last biennium.

MnUSA’s bill to provide an excise tax exemption for building materials used to develop and maintain our trails is pending in the Senate and House Tax Committees (SF1589, Eichorn/ HF2410, Lislegard). Your lobbyists need your help to pass this sales tax exemption. Please call or email your legislators in both the Senate and the House and ask them to support this vital bill.

Finally, the Legislature will be enacting a budget for the State this year. This budget will include funding for the DNR and our grant-in-aid program. We will be working to insure that the budget reflects protecting and promoting snowmobile trails in Minnesota.

A friend of mine invited me to the Vets Appreciation Ride this year. I attended and was overwhelmed by the first-class event and the service I received. I’m writing you to try to express my sincere appreciation to the Association for running this event. I’ve not had this much fun since the ‘70s, when I last rode a snowmobile. I was treated like a VIP, as were all the Vets, I’m sure. I was invited, housed, fed, and was lent a sled. This volunteer effort doesn’t just happen without the hard work, sacrifice, and dedication of the entire Association. So, I’m writing with the hopes that these words of appreciation will reach every level of the Association. THANK YOU, especially to the sponsors who helped make this great event happen. I had so much fun that it should be illegal! I hope to join you again next year and, if you don’t mind, I’m going to spread the word of this event to my circle so others can experience such appreciation. I really did have the best time. I’ve been bragging to anyone who will listen about the joy it brings to the snowmobile clubs (and all others included) to be able to do this for the Vets. I could see it written on the faces of those leaders I happened to run into at the event.

RIDE ON…

2023 WINTER RENDEZVOUS

Saturday’s guided rides had great conditions and excellent trails. Here’s MnUSA President Scott Wakefield enjoying the “ride”.

The 2023 MnUSA Winter Rendezvous featured excellent riding conditions and perfect Minnesota weather for a change. The host venue accommodations at Grand Casino Hinckley offered space, comfort and easy access to the well-developed trail systems. The 2023 Rendezvous guided rides utilized the Munger State Trail and state trails within the St. Croix State Park and the St. Croix State Forest, along with the local GIA trail systems of the Hinckley-Pine City Flames, Northern Pine Riders, East Central Riders, Mille Lacs Drift Skippers, and Giese Sno-Cruisers clubs. All of Minnesota’s nine MnUSA snowmobile club regions were represented with over 150 people in attendance for the event, aimed at sustaining and growing the sport of snowmobiling.

Kick-off for the well-organized gathering was Thursday, February 9th with the Icebreaker Reception sponsored by the Carver County Snowrunners and MnUSA Region 2. Attendees were greeted with opening comments in Ballroom 2 of Grand Casino Hinckley. Socializing with old friends and new acquaintances began with conversations of the industry, the riding to come and the fine amenities of

Grand Casino. An indoor swimming pool with a raised whirlpool area, the Grand Harmony Spa, five on-site restaurants, 24-hour security patrolling the property, plus 2,400 slot machines, a 300-seat bingo and table games of lady luck, all part of the adventure.

VIP Ride

On Friday, legislators, DNR personnel, MnUSA members and region representatives started the day with a quick breakfast and then were shuttled to the snowmobile staging area were the riders met up with local trail guides for the day’s ride. The VIP group headed toward St. Croix State Park which holds 80 miles of trail through the hardwood forests of Minnesota, connecting the park with other state forests and several area communities. St. Croix State Park nears 40,000 acres in size and runs 21 miles along the Minnesota side of the St. Croix River. Other popular rides in the area include Banning State Park and the Willard Munger Trail, all part of over 21,000 miles of groomed snowmobile trails, 20,000+ of which are maintained by local snowmobile clubs and volunteers in conjunction with Minnesota United Snowmobilers in the nine MnUSA regions across Minnesota. The winding forested trails were in excellent condition as the riders enjoyed the beauty of nature in the St. Croix State Park with its extensive trail system.

The group made a stop at the trail shelter in memory of, Heidi Benoit, taking a short break to enjoy the sunshine and perfect temperatures in the 20’s.

Back on the trail continuing further into the state park, riders made their next destination within the park. The St. Croix Lodge features two fireplaces, seating for approximately fifty people and modern restroom facilities. Rick Dunkley of the MN DNR welcomed the VIP group and gave a great overview of the St. Croix State Park and all it has to offer. Legislators and DNR personnel, made brief comments of support regarding current legislative topics. From that point the VIP group finished the days ride rolling the trails leading back to Grand Casino in time for MnUSA Trails and Legislative committee to meet on current industry and trail topics. The attendees then gathered for social hour and an evening meal which included comments from Minnesota senators, representatives and the MN DNR.

Saturday’s Fun Ride

Again, a quick breakfast was in order to start off the day. Attendees picked their day’s trail ride based on riding experience and desired trail and travel distance. Shuttles moved members and VIPs to the staging areas where five different groups met up with their trail guides and sweeps

from the local clubs. Saturday’s ride was organized but offered attendees the option of making their own schedule and stops, as they headed out to ride the hundreds of miles of trail available in the area. The entire event was very well organized and ran seamlessly for all the various activities that were taking place on and off site. Fun times were had by all due to the hard work and effort of many volunteers on and off the trails and behind the scenes at the annual event.

Riders returned from another adventure in beautiful weather conditions, many stopping back at the host site in time to get another look at the 2023 Tucker Sno-Cat and Trail Paver drag, and visit other event sponsors situated in front of the ballroom. Made in the USA, the unit is known for its articulating 4-Track System that leaves only a gentle footprint over snow-covered terrain.

The 2023 MnUSA Winter Rendezvous included a social hour, banquet, DNR awards, MnUSA awards and concluded with a live auction of many great items donated by MnUSA business members and regions who support the efforts of MnUSA.

On Sunday, the conclusion of the 2023 Winter Rendezvous included a General Membership meeting, followed after a short break with the Directors Meeting. Many items of interest were discussed, including a new/old membership benefit of accidental life insurance for MnUSA members at no cost to the member, more information on that to follow.

We look forward to you joining us at the 2024 Winter Rendezvous when will do it all again. Until then, ride on!

Thanks and Recognition….

One of the highlights of Rendezvous is the Saturday awards banquet where MnUSA recognizes individuals for their dedication and volunteer efforts on behalf of snowmobiling and DNR Trails and Parks presents its Director’s Award.

• MnUSA’s Unsung Hero: Kenneth Koivisto, Cromwell Kenny joined his local club, the Cromwell Sno-Gophers, when he got out of military service in 1969. He has worn many hats in the club in the past 53 years including president, vice president, treasurer and trail coordinator. He was instrumental in establishing a trail system that the club still maintains today and served as a MnUSA Region Director beginning in 1980. Kenny is passionate about safety and became a snowmobile safety instructor in the late ‘70s. Hundreds, if not 1,000’s of kids have benefitted from his teaching.

Snowmobiler of the Year Unsung Hero

• MnUSA’s Snowmobiler of the Year: Mark Kavanaugh, Brainerd Mark has been active in snowmobiling for 30 years and has served in many volunteer positions in local clubs, trail association (president of Crow Wing County Snowmobile Trail Association since 2010), MnUSA (director, treasurer, vice president, president, committee chair), and MnUSA’s delegate to the American Council of Snowmobile Associations. For his trail association he organizes its raffle and dinner, the trail map, transportation to MnUSA’s Legislative Reception, weekly rides, and has served as chairperson of Winter Rendezvous three times. Mark has been the “face” of MnUSA’s Facebook page since its inception. He is always willing to go the extra mile for snowmobiling.

In 2016, when the club lost its trail administrator, two of them volunteered to care for and maintain the groomer and equipment. They also transformed a building into a clubhouse and storage. Each one of them has taken on duties and positions in their local club. They recruit new members, volunteer for club related projects, work on the trail system, maintain the club’s equipment and have donated tools and equipment needed to get the job done.

• MnUSA’s Club of the Year: Prior Lake Snowmobile Association, Prior Lake

MnUSA recognizes this club of 138 families and about 325 members for its promotion of snowmobiling. Members use mostly Facebook in promoting their 52 year old club and its activities which has been very successful. The club is one of four clubs in Sno-Trails, Inc., the trail association in Scott County. They maintain 90 miles of trails, celebrated the 30th year of Adopt A Highway, conduct safety training, and volunteer at the Prior Lake Rotary’s Music Fest. They work with local government and DNR, helped the city to become

DNR Director’s Award

Each year a MN DNR Parks and Trails Director’s Award is presented to an individual or group for significant contributions to snowmobiling in this state. This year’s award was presented by Ann Pierce, Director of DNR Parks & Trails, to Northern Pine Riders for being key in the success of snowmobiling and recreational trails in the County. The club was nominated by Pine County, a landowner on part of the 157 miles of snowmobile trails maintained by the club on public and private lands. The Soo Line Trail in Pine County would not be the success it is

a Snowmobile Friendly Community and in 2019 the club received WCCO’s Best Snowmobile Club in Minnesota for its promotion of snowmobiling.

• MnUSA’s Groomer of the Year: Wayne Schlauderaff, Detroit Lakes Wayne has been a member of ULTRA for 22 years and a groomer operator for 15 years. Along with a family member, he grooms and maintains a 21 mile portion of the club trails, always willing to do whatever it takes to keep the trails ready for riding 7 days a week.

Wayne has held club board positions and has taken on trail administrator responsibilities that oversees 11 operators and over 140 miles of trails, including equipment maintenance, GIA paperwork and working with landowners. Wayne also commits countless hours for the club’s vintage rally and swap meet.

This Club maintains positive working relationships with DNR going across four (4) different State Forests and two (2) State Parks and has a strong commitment to the communities in its trail system. The award is to the many members of the club that that have contributed over the years.

In the second round of grant applications in 2022, seven projects totaling $178,343 were approved for funding from the $500,000 that has been set aside for the Trail Improvement Grant Program. This fund is for projects not generally covered under normal trail maintenance and grooming expenses. What’s New for 2024?

Greek philosopher Heraclitus, once said, “Change is the only constant in life.” And that change is what keeps us glued to the manufacturers’ websites for the announcement of the “New” sleds for the coming season. Sprinkle in a few supply chain issues, and limited “Snow Check Only” builds, and that just adds to the urgency and excitement around the changes the manufacturers have made for us to devour. And that’s what we call Snow Check 2024!

Ski-Doo 2024

Ski-Doo was fast out of the gate in announcing its 2024 sleds, and with good reason—they are fast! Nobody has stopped talking about the 2024 Ski-Doo MXZ-X-RS 850 Turbo R, aimed at the more aggressive riders and lake racers. This sled is unique in the fact it needs a 1.2-liter tank behind the seat, filled with XPS ICE (intake cooling enhancer) with menthol to keep it from freezing. It is activated at full throttle to add a mist of the mixture to keep the engine cool and gives it that boost to 185 horsepower. Let off on the throttle or run out of the mixture and you’re back to 165 naturally aspirated horsepower. Wow, talk about getting serious about horsepower! Again, it’s a limited-build, Snow Check Only sled. So, call now!

Also getting a lot of buzz is the all-new groundbreaking electric Grand Touring. This is Ski-Doo’s first full-production foray into the all-electric snowmobile world, albeit for shortrange guided rides, and it’s a big step.

If I had to summarize Ski-Doo’s lineup for 2024, it’s innovative, exciting, aggressive, pushing the envelope so to speak, towards new technology, and looking to add more market share. If I could ask a question or two, I would ask why so many 4-strokes? And how about a bigger gauge package option? Overall, excellent options of sleds for any terrain you’re looking to ride from our good friends from across the border.

Arctic Cat 2024

The big news in Cat Country is the all-new CATALYST® platform for all 600-class sleds. I was able to get a sneak peek the Friday before the big announcement at Hay Days. And it is now as it was then—a showstopper! Listening to Troy Halverson speak so passionately about the sled, you could just feel the pride and his love of this machine. It was so cool to see a brand-new chassis and the excitement it brought. You should have witnessed the scene at Hay Days when it was unveiled!

The lightweight CATALYST platform features Arctic Cat’s unique laydown engine design with heavier components placed in the middle of the chassis and lighter ones placed on the outskirts to keep the ride balanced. It features a new belt drive, the ADAPT CVT system, less parts for a 10 percent weight reduction and easier serviceability, one-piece tunnel, and the first locking accessory system dubbed ATACH.

Also for model year 2024, Arctic Cat reintroduced the fullsize touring Pantera 7000, ZR 7000 and race-ready ZR 9000 RR to cater to a wider variety of riders.

If I had to summarize the 2024 Arctic Cat lineup, I’d call it exciting, and all about the rider experience—from the all-new CATALYST platform to the reintroduction of some highly sought-after models, 2024 is truly all about the rider for Cat! My only question was, “Why not the CATALYST platform

Included in the Spring Power Surge is priority delivery (delivery of your new Yamaha ride by December 31, 2023), Genuine Yamaha coverage for 3 years—1-year manufacturer warranty, followed by 2 years of Yamaha Extended Service. Snow Check sleds get a 3-year warranty, special financing options, guaranteed shipment, and special discounts for clothing and accessories.

If I had to summarize the Polaris 2024 lineup, I’d say it’s all about the sled, the quality of the build, the fit and finish, listening to its current customers’ needs and solidifying its core customers’ loyalty for a lifetime. If I could ask a question, it would be, why can’t we have all these options, for the full year, and not just 23 days of the year?

Yamaha 2024

As Yamaha says, Limited Edition means limited time! Spring Only Limited-Edition sleds include a bevy of high-powered lake racers, to mountain sleds, to utility sleds, to even the little Snoscoot’s through its Spring Power Surge program. The Sidewinder SRX LE EPS gets electric power steering, Fox shocks, 20-inch tunnel bag, heated seat and visor outlet, a

If I had to summarize Yamaha’s 2024 lineup, I’d say it’s limited—it’s here and gone by 4/4/2023. So don’t wait around if you want the best rates, special financing, and a great extended warranty program, along with Yamaha stalwarts like Team Yamaha Blue, electric power steering, Fox electronic shocks, tunnel bags, seat options, heated seats, a goggle bag and lightweight shocks. If I had to ask a question, I’d ask, why not offer the extended warranty to all models?

In conclusion, all the manufacturers should be proud of the products they are producing for our industry, with all the innovation and rider-centered comforts, to the machine itself, embracing technology along the way. The 2024 lineup is living by the motto of old Heraclitus that the only constant is in fact, change. And change, for all that it’s worth with the betterment of products and the options afforded to us consumers to own the best built, most innovative, most technologically advanced, and most importantly, fun sleds on earth. And for that we all thank you!

THE CJ RAMSTAD NORTH SHORE STATE TRAIL

Region 7’s Road to Hidden Treasures

The CJ Ramstad North Shore State Trail is the crown jewel of MnUSA’s Region 7 in Northeast Minnesota. It is the I-35 of snowmobile trails, winding its way through rugged terrain from Duluth to Grand Marais. Every year, tens of thousands of Minnesotans ride the NSST never veering from its majestic path. And who can blame them? With the most snow in Minnesota, the elevation changes, the scenery, and of course, picture-perfect views of the largest freshwater lake in the world, what could be better? Little do all these riders know the list of hidden gems and spectacular trails that they are riding past on their way up the shore. The NSST is in reality a road to vast hidden treasures throughout Northeast Minnesota that are all worth taking a detour for.

THE DULUTH AREA TRAILS

The CJ Ramstad North Shore State Trail begins in a parking lot on Martin Road on the edge of Duluth. What people don’t know is that just feet from the trail entrance is access to two hidden gems that most people from other parts of the state have no idea exist. Take a right out of the parking lot and you are on a Duluth city trail maintained by the Duluth Drift Toppers snowmobile club that brings you to Hawk Ridge, a part of the Skyline Parkway in Duluth that is closed to automobile traffic in the winter. From here you get a view of Duluth and Lake Superior that you can’t find anywhere else, and parts of a trail that provide you with views that are beyond words. The photo opportunities here are incredible— you can take once-in-a-lifetime postcard level shots you can enjoy for years to come.

As soon as you get on the CJ Ramstad trail you will see a little feeder trail off to your left. This is the nondescript, non-eventful Rice Lake Trail—a residential trail that has no special features other than it brings you to the Hermantown Over the Hill Night Riders trail system. This gives you access to the Willard Munger State Trail to the south, which provides you with access to the west side of Skyline Parkway, which

is also closed during the winter months. Here, you will enjoy even more spectacular views of the St. Louis River Valley, as well as access to Spirit Mountain and numerous snowmobile trails that bring you through some of the most amazing terrain you have ever seen or ever will see.

Farther north on the NSST you come to what is known to locals as “The Normana Pit”—an old gravel pit where the NSST connects with the Reservoir Riders trail system. This trail system features an entire network of trails that bring you to lakes, restaurants, gas stations, resorts and a network of trails that feature everything from wide meandering paths through spectacular pine and hardwood forests, to old ‘60s era one-lane snowmobile trails that bring you back to snowmobiling’s roots. You can easily spend an entire day on the Reservoir Riders trail system exploring; and you can also hook up to the Hermantown Trail system to the south to give yourself or your family a nice little loop ride; or explore even more trails to the west.

18 Minnesota Snowmobiling
Explore all of the hidden gems that the NSST gives you access to! A breathtaking view from Hawk Ridge.

FROM DULUTH TO TWO HARBORS

Once you get beyond the Normana Pit you encounter an incredible stretch of hilly terrain, and in the middle of it all is a trail that gets passed thousands of times a day—the Pequaywan Trail, which is maintained by the Pequaywan Area Trail Blazers. Locals take this trail all the time because it is meticulously maintained and is truly one of the finest cared for trails in the state. It makes for a nice ride to the Pequaywan Inn which feels like an old-school snowmobile pit stop, complete with a real wood fireplace to warm yourself by. Their trail system extends north and east, bringing you to a number of other trails and lakes.

Farther up the NSST you reach the Two Harbors access trails maintained by the Voyageurs Snowmobile Club. These trails bring you into the snowmobile friendly town of Two Harbors where you can find gas, food, and lodging. But the real jewel here is a trail that the majority of Minnesotans don’t even know exists—the iconic Yukon Trail. Looking for a trail built for modern snowmobiles? Looking for incredible terrain changes and breathtaking scenery? Looking for a trail with the most spectacular trailside shelters you have ever seen? This is the trail for you. Once you ride this trail you will know why it is one of the favorite trails in the entire state for people that are in the know.

As we get outside of Two Harbors, we also find the Gooseberry trail that leads to the iconic Gooseberry Falls. A

North Shore staple for tourists in the summer, the ice-covered falls are nothing short of awe inspiring in the winter.

SILVER BAY AND THE NORTH SHORE

Farther north you reach the access trails to Silver Bay and Beaver Bay and more restaurants and lodging, along with some incredible views of Lake Superior. You also close in on Finland, the snowiest town in the State of Minnesota. In this area you also pass the Moosewalk, Timberwolf and the unbelievable Tomahawk Trail, which is considered not only one of the best trails in Minnesota, but one of the best trails in the entire US. And you will also find the Trestle Inn—a place that should be on every snowmobiler’s bucket list.

Continuing north, you can find trails that bring you into Schroeder, Tofte and Lutsen. After Lutsen, it is a trek through the wildest of forests in the state until you get to Grand Marais and all the iconic forest trails in the extreme northeast corner of the Minnesota. Are you looking for remote areas, rugged beauty and tons of snow? Then the northeast corner of Region 7 is the place for you.

You can literally spend days exploring all of the hidden gems that the NSST gives you access to, and you will soon realize why Region 7 is one of the most popular snowmobile destinations in the world.

DESTINATION: The John A. Brandt Memorial Shelter

designed for sleds with a top speed of 30 miles an hour. When the Yukon was constructed in the mid ‘80s, it was designed to handle more modern and powerful snowmobiles; this means long straightaways, wider trails and not as many of the tight hairpin turns that are common on other trails. The trail is meticulously maintained by the Voyageur Snowmobile Club out of Two Harbors, and best of all, the Yukon Trail leads you to the iconic Tomahawk Trail, which is regarded as one of the best trails in the entire United States.

Tucked away off a little-known trail just past Two Harbors, Minnesota, is one of the greatest hidden gems in the world of must-see snowmobile destinations: The John A Brandt Memorial Shelter. I know right away you are thinking to yourself, “Really? A shelter made your list of must-see snowmobile destinations in the state?” The simple answer to that question is a resounding “YES!” Sure, there are plenty of trailside shelters all over the state of Minnesota; some are simple and some are more extravagant, but the John A. Brandt Memorial Shelter is one that in our humble opinion, has yet to be topped. So, what makes this shelter a yearly destination for snowmobilers in the know and why should you put it on your snowmobile trip must see list? To answer that question you first need to know the story behind how this shelter came to be.

There is no doubt that the undisputed King of Northeast Minnesota snowmobile trails is the CJ Ramstad North Shore State Trail. The NSST starts in Duluth and runs 150 miles north to Grand Marais; it is the snowmobile trail version of I-35. Everybody knows about the North Shore State Trail, and it gets widely used primarily because it is the center point of the entire Northeast Minnesota trail system. Throw in occasional stunning views of Lake Superior, dramatic terrain changes and a variety of snow conditions, and it is easy to understand why the North Shore State Trail gets so much traffic. What the majority of people don’t know is that while the NSST is a great trail, it provides access to trails that are even more dynamic and give you a more enjoyable riding experience without all of the traffic. The Yukon Trail is one of those trails. Most people have no idea the Yukon Trail even exists, even though thousands of snowmobilers ride past its entrance every year. The main reason the Yukon goes unnoticed is that it is a Grant-In-Aid trail that virtually runs parallel to the North Shore State Trail. Although the trail entrance off of the North Shore State Trail is well marked, hundreds of people blow by it every day, and boy are they missing out.

Minnesota has 22,000 miles of grant-in-aid snowmobile trails, many of which were built in the 1970s for 1970’s era snowmobiles, which mean lots of sharp turns that were

Once you leave the North Shore State Trail and head north on the Yukon you will eventually come to an intersection of the Yukon and Brimson trails. Just past that you will come upon a sign that reads “Scenic Overlook” with an arrow pointing up a steep hill. If you take that turn you will find yourself at the John A. Brandt Memorial Shelter and realize you have just found your own little slice of snowmobile heaven.

The shelter was actually the brainchild of John Brandt and other members of the Voyageur Snowmobile Club. While scouting possible locations for a new shelter in the winter of 2010-11, John pointed out the site and told the other members of the group that he thought it would be a good spot to build a shelter. In March of 2011 John was killed in a snowmobile accident. That summer the club decided to go ahead with the shelter on the site that John had pointed out. They bushwhacked their way to the top of the hill and then brought in a dozer to level things off. In the fall of 2012, construction of the various buildings began, and by the time the snow fell the shelter was ready.

Initially, only the club members knew that the shelter existed, but as time passed, a few snowmobilers that had straggled onto the Yukon Trail followed the signs to the top of the hill, where they found top-notch accommodations and spectacular views. Among other things, the site boasts the mother of all shelters, complete with a deck, benches, and an indoor fireplace. There is also often times a gas grill available for cookouts, as well as a large outdoor fire pit, a wood shed and the nicest outhouse you may ever see in your life. But what really takes your breath away are the fantastic views of the Northern Minnesota wilderness. Atop this hill you can see for miles in every

Duluth Drift Toppers Snowmobile Club

In the early 1960s, a new mechanical contraption was introduced to the residents of Duluth Minnesota by Roy Halvorson’s Bombardier dealership. It was billed initially as the “Ski-Dog”— “the Motorized Dog Team” but, depending on which legend you want to believe, whether it be a design or printing error, this odd new contraption had its named changed to “Ski-Doo.” Initially Roy believed this new arrival from Bombardier was a complete waste of floor space and tucked it away in the warehouse in favor of the larger Bombardier vehicles. Roy’s son got on this “Ski-Doo” one winter day and thought it was amazingly fun and convinced his father that it was indeed something that would sell well in the snowy Duluth market. Before long, Roy Halvorson became the largest ski-doo dealer in North America as the residents of Duluth quickly embraced this amazing new invention.

A group of skiers that were stewards of the Lester River Ski Chalet became the most passionate supporters of this new over-the-snow vehicle and enjoyed riding them in the ditches and powerlines to their favorite watering holes. After a while, a group of them got together and decided that they should start to establish better trails to get to their favorite destinations and started hacking their way through the woods of Duluth from the Lester River Ski Chalet. They called their group The Duluth Drift Toppers Snowmobile Club, having no idea that their little social group would become one of the oldest snowmobile clubs in the entire state and, that over the years, its members would play pivotal roles in creating the Minnesota snowmobile trail system, even having input on the construction of the iconic CJ Ramstad North Shore Trail which begins in a parking lot on Martin Road in Duluth. This is also the home of the Duluth Drift Toppers groomer building.

direction at rolling snow-covered hills and valleys—every square foot of the site gives you another stunning view to the point of using up all your cell phone’s memory taking pictures.

Soon these snowmobilers told their friends about the shelter and then they told their friends, and it rapidly became a must-see destination for countless weekend rides as well as a pitstop for other organized snowmobile activities like the ALS Blizzard Tour or the March of Dimes Yeti Tour charity rides. Throw in the fact that the Voyageur club is often present cooking up some burgers, hot dogs and brats, and it makes it that much more rewarding.

The Drift Toppers are responsible for maintaining the Duluth East City Trails including Hawk Ridge which provides Duluth residents with breathtaking winter views of the city. The club is also responsible for grooming the beginning leg of the CJ Ramstad North Shore Trail, portions of which follow the old trail that had been carved out of the woods by the residents and club members way back in the 1960s (which accounts for the twisting and turning of the trail in this area as it was initially built for machines with 12 horsepower engines), as well as the Rice Lake Trail that connects the Hermantown trail and the southern Minnesota snowmobile trails to the North Shore Trail.

Each year the Drift Toppers club members provide snowmobile safety training to the local youth, certifying 30 students this year. The club also supports many charity events in the area including the ALS Blizzard Tour and the Yeti Tour. But perhaps the club’s proudest contribution is the work it does for laying out the trail for the John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon which follows the North Shore Trail and begins at Billy’s Bar, the initial destination for the club members when it was called the Idle Hour back in the ‘60s. The Drift Toppers have been supporting the Beargrease since its inception in 1980, and an enormous amount of volunteer hours from a handful of club members goes into preparing for the race every year. Ironically the club that started by a group of individuals embracing Bombardier’s “Motorized Dog Team” became huge supporters of real-life dog teams decades later.

A trip to the John A. Brandt Memorial Shelter is always a memorable affair. Often times you can stop at the shelter and you will be in the midst of up to twenty or more sleds. Other times you and your buddies are the only ones there to soak up the solitude and beauty of the place; then there are those truly magical times when you spy a bald eagle gliding over the valley below. Club members like to think the eagle is John’s spirit looking down over all the snowmobilers that stop at his shelter enjoying the day, just like he had done out on the trails so many times in the past.

March 2023 21

The Tri-County Snow Czechers youth snowmobile club invited me down to the New Prague Fire Department to attend a recent meeting. What a great experience this was. It was

like I was transformed back in time to when I was a youngster early in my snowmobile career. Once we got the formalities away with, and that’s not what this club is about-it’s about having fun, riding, and comradery, we went around the room and listened to experiences from the last club ride. And that’s when the real fun started. The great stories these young adults told were so near and dear to me; I will never forget them. The story of the wandering ski that kept coming off, to the blown motor, to just about everything in-between you can think of, and the competition between members on who’s having the most fun.

The balance of the meeting consisted of collecting money from pizzas the Snow Czechers were selling to raise money for the club; planning another ride for this season; and looking forward to other events they are planning throughout the year. If the full agenda isn’t an indication of their dedication to the survival of this sport as the next generation, and the enthusiasm they show doing it, aren’t true indicators of their commitment to seeing those projects thru to completion, I don’t know what else is. Thanks guys, for letting this wily, mature, snowmobile veteran feel like a youngster again!

Vintage Midwest Ride-In by Scott Wakefield

The Midwest Vintage Snow Shows third iteration of the Midwest Ride-In at the ERX Motor Park in Elk River may be the best one based on snowmobiles on the grounds and fun!

Albeit windy and cold with blowing snow on Friday, which created its own fun, so to speak, in the expansive swap meet, it also made it feel like a real Minnesota winter. With sleds everywhere, and with the strong wind in mind, a quick change of plans for after the Kevin Lehse Memorial fireside trail ride and social, was moved to where the Kid’s Pro Ice normally would take place. Tucked behind a massive hill, the pallet fueled bonfire, and cold beer, were a big hit.

Going to a 2-day event for the first time, day 2 was packed with events. Continuation of the swap meet, and having to expand it on Friday afternoon, meant even more vintage and current snowmobile items to buy. And with calm winds and warming temps, the crowds poured in a little later than normal, which was great, providing a break at the gate for me to enjoy my breakfast of champions— “cold pizza” and half frozen bottles of water—and watching the sun rise over the horizon.

So many smiles, so much fun, the big show was bigger than ever. Finish it off with great, old school sled races on the BIG track, the 2023 Midwest Ride-In at ERX Motor Park was the best version yet, in my opinion. But wait, there’s more; the 2024’s theme is “Back to the ‘80s”. I’m washing my Zubaz, and getting my mullet photos to my barber now.

Milestones

Trails Dedicated to DeLyle Pankratz

DeLyle Pankratz has been pivotal in establishing, walking, marking, brushing, maintaining, designing, and getting grants for Iron Range trails and clubs for over 53 years. To that end, on February 18, 2023, with over 100 vintage sleds in attendance, Pankratz was most deservingly honored with a dedication of the Laurentian Trail at the Loren Filter Shelter. On February 25, 2023, the Ely Lake Spur just south of Eveleth was also dedicated to Pankratz.

“Swede,” a Pankratz’ snowmobile buddy commented, “DeLyle is most deserving of these dedications. I think he’s probably walked more than once from Ely to Grand Rapids, designing and marking with ribbon these trails.” “Curly,” another snowmobile buddy, added that he and DeLyle have worked many years together, planning and strategizing on where to place the trails back in the day; and now, are dealing with re-routes. Yes, folks the Iron Range clubs have to deal with re-routes, like we all do. Family and friends, and community members are truly proud of one of their own getting this attention, as it’s most deserving.

Snowbirds of Amboy

Exciting, breathtaking, suspenseful, and jubilation! Are we talking about The Daytona 500 or the Snowbirds of Amboy cash drawings? Well, in this case, both! The Snowbirds held their annual Daytona 500 race viewing party and raffle ticket drawing event at the same time. First thing is the amazing clubhouse—with some good luck, help from the city, and endless hours of club members volunteered work, this is one of the nicest clubhouses around.

This Region 4 snowmobile club, the Snowbirds of Amboy, has been around since 1971, and has the history to prove it, with photos of club rides, and club trips and community events throughout the years. With around 70 members in the club, and a conduit of a trail system connecting in all directions, the club is very active and had just completed their annual vintage run a few weeks before. The majority of the winners of the total purse of $7,500 were close by residents, and so that assures the club is yet again supporting its community. Thanks to the club’s leaders and membership for the great afternoon of racing, fun, food, and fellowship. And if you are ever in the area, let them know and stop in and check out the clubhouse and sit and visit a bit.

Douglas Area Trails Association Utilizes Groomer Tracker App

Want to have the latest grooming information? Well, Douglas Area Trails Association (DATA) now has Groomer Tracker installed, and everyone can see live updates of the trails that have been groomed. DATA is the second snowmobile club in Minnesota to utilize this latest app, Groomer Tracker.

Each DATA groomer is equipped with a tracking beacon provided by Groomer Tracker that relays its position back to the data center. That data is then displayed via an app on your Android / iOS mobile device. As the groomers move through the trail system, they leave colored lines on the map indicating the length of time since the trail had been groomed.

For DATA riders the app is free to download, and you will be able to see the DATA trails as well as sponsors near them. If you want to see where the groomers are or have been, you will need to purchase the groomed trails for DATA. The

information for DATA is $10 for the season. (50% of the profit from each purchase is split with the club to help with their grooming operation.)

The app will help the club with increased tourism by helping visitors locate the very best trails and keep them coming back year after year; with safety by displaying the position of the groomer on the map so riders can be extra cautious when they know a groomer is on their trail; with revenue by splitting profits 50/50 each time the club’s data is purchased; and having peace of mind knowing where the groomers and operators are 24/7! If they break down, club members can go directly to them, not send out a search party. If there is an accident, help can be sent directly there which saves time and could save lives!

Let the drawings begin. Door prizes. Lots of history is being preserved by the Snowbirds.

Voyageur Snowmobile Club

The Voyageur Snowmobile Club, up on the North Shore of Lake Superior has been around since 1985. The club is made up of 126 volunteers who truly take pride in their trail system, shelters, equipment, and clubhouse. During the season they spend much of the time grooming and repairing/replacing their groomers, drags and anything else that can break down. This year the season started out quite warm, which isn’t what you look for when trying to establish the base for your trails. Then came the heavy two-day snowstorm that took down trees, with brush basically falling to the ground or bending over to touch the ground, making things very dangerous. The situation looked almost hopeless as there was so much to do, and finding a starting point was sometimes the hard part.

The club put out a plea to its membership asking for help. Many showed up and took on parts of the trail to get it ready, and most importantly, safe, and enjoyable. We received a call from the 148th Airbase in Duluth seeing if we could use some help. Of course, we said yes, and they showed up with sleds and tools to take on the challenge ahead.

After weeks of cutting, packing, and removing huge drifts, we were able to break through to Isabella and start the Yukon Trail grooming schedule. Each mile became more and more manageable, and today things are back in order and being enjoyed by visitors and local residents alike.

With the continued commitment by our club and other volunteers, we are ready to fulfill our obligation to the MN DNR and Lake County. We hope you are able to enjoy our trail system, and after a day of riding, please remember the crews that really stepped up and turned the challenges into memories. Be safe.
