February is always a time we are in the thick of the season. Rendezvous is on tap for a fun weekend, the Blizzard Tour, all of the vintage shows, lots of snowmobile racing, and clubs are normally out grooming. Snowmobilers are resilient, and optimistic; Rendezvous is still on, and the group up there in Ottertail County is religiously working on making sure you have a good time, snow or no snow. It also doesn’t take much to put on a vintage show, snow or no snow- boogie wheels etc.
In this issue, we are completing our 2nd destination city. Grand Rapids was the second most vote-getting city in Minnesota. Who will round out our 3rd most popular snowmobile destination city? You’ll just have to wait until the next issue to find out.
Snowmobilers are a creative bunch; we will tell you how to make an excuse to get together and have FUN! Snow or no snow…. Like the Big Lake Club’s Hotdish competition, the DATA Trails Association find “Little Big Ole”, the Ely-Babbit-Tower Fun Run 2024, the Logan J. Pfeffer Memorial Ride in Osakis, the New Prague Snowdrifters Vintage Ride and Show, ACSA’s big Trails Region Ride/Meeting in Carter, WI, at the Potawatomi Casino Hotel and its Mountain Region Ride/Meeting in West Yellowstone, MT. My point is, as snowmobilers, we are still working hard to put on events, get members involved, and if we don’t have ton of snow to do it, meh? It’s happening sweetheart, it’s happening. So don’t just sit there and sulk, get out and enjoy the fun!
Personally, I would like to thank the Board of Directors for meeting during this busy holiday season. It was a wellattended meeting with great input from the Board. Even though it may seem like things are moving slower than expected, please know your Executive Board is working diligently on the issues.
hosting an event, be sure to get it posted on social media so other clubs may see the great work clubs are doing.
Since the weather is not cooperating, this may be a good time to contact your state representatives and senators. Introduce yourself, educate them on the snowmobiling issues that are part of MnUSA legislative agenda, and invite them to join you at MnUSA’s legislator reception on February 21st at the Capitol Ridge Event Center (former Kelly Inn). You can find your legislators by inserting your address under “Who Represents Me?” at https://www.leg. mn.gov.
With the new website being developed, some of the issues will be resolved and make it much easier for clubs to submit memberships and even be able to pay online. This user-friendly platform will also create more time for staff to work on other details and make the office more efficient. Kelly Hesli, MnUSA office staff, is working with Tim Heinen, Region 6, to do the site testing and work out the kinks for the site. Hopefully MnUSA members will be seeing the fruits of their hard work shortly.
The Winter Rendezvous is just around the corner. Let’s get those registrations in and come together for the support of snowmobiling. This is a great opportunity to explore another region of the state and from past experience we know that Thumper Pond is a great venue. With the possibility of a low snow season this can be a time to reconnect with friends from across the state. Region 9 is doing everything they can to prepare for this event so for now all we can do is the snow dance so that we can have a chance at enjoying their trails!
Many of you may have trips already planned but the weather is not cooperating. Who remembers any Christmas where it was 50 degrees? Try to keep club members involved with hosting dinners at map sponsors establishments, club trivia, club trips with alternate entertainment if the snow doesn’t cooperate. Although the snow isn’t there to hit the trails, maybe your equipment needs some work, hold a trail maintenance party or, for that matter, be proactive and do some trail sign repair and get a jump on next year. I am sure many of you are better planners than I am and can think of ways to keep the club members involved this snow season. If your club is
Trespassing fines have now become law with stiffer penalties, but loud pipes have also been a reason why some landowners have pulled their permits and closed sections of trail. Stock pipes that have been decimal tested to less than 78 decibels are legal. Although some might not want to hear it, this may be our next challenge when keeping our trail system intact.
The MSEAF and MnUSA Veterans’ Ride is right around the corner. Not only is this a weekend to thank the veterans for their service, but a time for them to understand that they are not alone. Any chance you get to thank a veteran for their service please make the effort to do so. Maybe your club has several veterans in their membership, find a way to thank them that has meaning to them as well as your club. Dedicating a portion of a trail with the veterans’ names posted at the start of the trail is just one way to show your appreciation.
Once the snow flies, we will see you on the trails!

I just read Mike Clevenger’s Vice President article from the December issue of Minnesota Snowmobiling for the fifth time trying to get some ideas of what I should write here. Then it hit me, nobody really knows who I am, so please allow me to introduce myself. My name is Scotty Harder, I grew up in Cambridge, MN and graduated from high school there. Through my family’s membership I have been a member of snowmobile clubs since I was 4 years old with Mystic Riders, Cambridge Drift Dusters, Rum River Snow Riders, and currently the Elk Lake Easy Riders where I am the Trail Coordinator as well as a Youth Snowmobile Safety Instructor. I also serve as the Vice President of the Sherburne County Snowmobile Trail Assn. and currently am a non-active member of the Michigan Snowmobile Association and the Jackson Hole Snow Devils in Jackson, WY.
In the summer I work for Minnesota Paving and Materials as a transport driver, hauling heavy equipment primarily around the state of MN but sometimes to Iowa or Nebraska as well. That allows me to be seasonally laid off to enjoy snowmobiling all winter long... (when it’s not a El Niño year with no snow.) Besides snowmobiling, I enjoy 4-wheeling and riding my Harley in the summer. I also have a passion for classic muscle cars and NHRA Drag Racing.
This past year, I became the Chairperson for the MnUSA Safety Committee, and I also became a Region 3 Director, so you may have seen my name a time or
two in the magazine for those commitments. As your newly appointed Vice President, I look forward to serving you and helping in any way I can with your clubs and members alike. My goals are to help MnUSA move forward in the future and to assist in finding ways to promote younger generations to join clubs and to improve safety throughout the sport of snowmobiling.
I’d like to take this time to remind everyone that trails don’t happen without all the volunteers that work on our 22,000+ miles of trail and, even though it’s a El Niño year, this is a great time to get trails cleared, signs replaced or corrected, and trees trimmed so that you have less work in the fall next year to get your trails opened up... AND, thank you to all of those volunteers for their hard work in doing so.
Let’s all pray and do a Snow Dance in hopes of getting some riding in this year! I look forward to seeing you on the trails!
— Scotty HarderHappy New Year. Did you make resolutions for 2024? Mine focused on what we can do at the legislature this year to preserve and protect our trails. My other resolution is how snowmobilers can have a safe and fun winter. As Doug noted in last month’s article, we don’t need snow every year to have fun (or get things done!). We won’t need snow to get our legislative priorities passed but we will need the help of MnUSA members and clubs. Through our collective advocacy of the sport we love, we can do great things. Here is what we can expect in the next five months.
This is also the second session of the biennium which means all the bills drafted last year are still considered “alive” and can still be passed. 2025 will be a new biennium; everything will start over and if not passed in 2024, any bill must then be reintroduced. Also, with this being the end of the biennium it means the House is up for election. This incentivizes legislators to adjourn sine die and get back to the people who elected them (rather than yours truly).
The Minnesota legislature will be entering the second year of the 2023/2024 biennium. This is a non budget year which traditionally is focused on bonding and clean up bills. The most recent budget forecast was 2.7 billion dollars in surplus but due to previous session budgeting (spending) and inflation, the forecast indicates an imbalance in the next budget cycle 2025/2026. For this reason, words like “limited” and “measured” are used by leadership when describing the supplemental budget in the coming legislative session.
With this session beginning February 12th and ending May 20th, the legislature has much less time to pass bills.
In preparation for this article, I went to our MnUSA history page (something I’d recommend looking at) and found that in the 2012 “brown out” MnUSA got more achieved at the capital than just about any other year. From our policy agenda on registration to studs on asphalt to tort liability they were all passed in 2012. That year beat out many other years in our successes and it is probably because there was no snow blocking members from attending our legislative reception! This year’s reception will be on February 21st at the Capitol Ridge Event Center (The Kelly Inn). Please personally invite your legislators to addend and please come to greet them.
The MnUSA VIP ride will be on Friday, Feb 8th at Thumper Pond. We are expecting about a dozen legislators to ride with us as well as DNR dignitaries. Maybe Governor Walz will ride with us.
I really hope to be met with a nice base of snow when we arrive in Ottertail for this year’s Winter Rendezvous (2/8-2/11) but I know we don’t need it to be a force at the Capitol.
How did MnUSA get a new Vice President? Well, it was a series of events driven by the bylaws of the association. A void was created when former President Mark Kavanaugh unfortunately stepped down for personal reasons. Vice President Mike Clevenger stepped into the role as President per Article 5, Section 3, last sentence, “If the President should not complete his/her term, the Vice President would assume the role and responsibilities of President.”
Additionally, now needing a Vice President, the bylaws again provide in Article V, Section 3, second sentence “If for some reason an officer cannot fulfill his/her term with the exception of president, the State Board of Directors shall appoint a successor to fill the office until the next annual election and the newly elected officers take office.” That foretold a Special BOD Meeting where the appointment of the Vice President was on the agenda. Lead directors were contacted to disseminate potential candidates for Vice President through their regional clubs. The notice was sent to all directors
14 days in advance of the meeting pursuant to Article VIII, Section 2 of the bylaws. All those that applied to fill the position were discussed, vetted and approved by the BOD at that meeting.
MnUSA now introduces Scotty Harder as its new Vice President. Please see his article in this issue of Minnesota Snowmobiling. Welcome Scotty!
cordially invites you to join us in honoring our friends at the State Capitol Legislators’ Reception
Wednesday, February 21, 2024
4:30 – 7:30 P.M.
Capitol Ridge Event Center (Former Kelly Inn) 161 St. Anthony Avenue Saint Paul, Minnesota
MnUSA’s members are invited to contact their legislators and invite them to meet you at MnUSA’s
2024 Legislators’ Reception to talk about snowmobiling and its importance to you. With the redistricting, many members have new legislators. To find “Who Represents Me” and your legislators’ contact information, go to www.leg.state.mn.us and enter your address.
MnUSA’s Legislative Committee will be meeting during Rendezvous to finalize MnUSA’s 2024 legislative agenda. On the top of the list is protection of the dedicated fund and the sales tax exemption for trail maintenance materials. Also being discussed, due to trail closures caused by excessive noise, is increased enforcement and penalties for illegal pipes.
Members, friends and fans of MnUSA are invited to the Logan Pfeffer Memorial Ride & Fundraiser on February 10th at the Osakis VFW. The event is in remembrance of Logan Pfeffer who passed away in a car accident June 2023. One of his true passions was snowmobiling.
The ride will be held on all or part of the 30 miles of the D.A.T.A. trails that Logan’s friends and family sponsored in his name this riding season. If conditions are right, participants will ride all 30 miles out and back, ending with a dinner to raise funds for a memorial scholarship in Logan’s name. (There will be a Plan B in place, just in case.) Start time to be determined based on conditions.
Ride registration and dinner are free-will donation, and there will also be an online silent auction and free will-donation bake sale to enjoy. For more information visit burnoutsforlogan.com or follow the event on Facebook (Logan J. Pfeffer Memorial Ride).

Whenever you’re having fun, the best place to be is at the center of the action. That’s what makes Grand Rapids, Minnesota such a prime snowmobiling venue. Not only is it far enough north to enjoy ample snowfalls each winter, it’s a city full of amenities that sits at the junction of several top trails, including State Corridor Trails 41, 76 and 88 When you embark from Grand Rapids or one of the numerous resorts in the area, you’ve got riding options in every direction.
In the world of snowmobiling, Grand Rapids enjoys pride of place as the southern terminus of the renowned Taconite Trail—one of Minnesota’s premier snowmobile routes. This 165-mile trail (Corridor Trail 88) meanders north and east through the heart of the northwoods, providing a scenic ride all the way to far-off Ely. Along the way, there are dozens of connecting trails that provide plenty of options, including access to destinations on the historic Iron Range.
The Taconite Trail starts on the north side of the city and may be the most well-known path out of town, but it’s just one of several primary routes that lead far and
wide. A look at the trail map for Itasca County (one of Minnesota’s largest) shows why Grand Rapids is so well located.
If you want to rack up some miles, take your pick! In addition to the Taconite Trail heading north, Corridor Trail 76 goes east and then bends southeast toward Duluth. Another main route, Corridor Trail 41, rambles south out of town toward Hill City. Along the way, it provides easy access to the Driftskippers snowmobile clubhouse and their web of trails that offer enough loops to keep riders happy for half the day. Lastly, a short hop to Cohasset puts sledders on the Bushwacker trail northwest to Deer River and beyond that to the vast expanse of Lake Winnibigoshish.
The Itasca County network is extensive and well maintained, so no matter which direction you choose, you can spend the day making a grand circuit that brings you back to town. Itasca’s trails connect with other routes in all of the adjacent counties (Aitkin, Saint Louis, Koochiching, Beltrami and Cass), so the riding options are essentially unlimited.
Now let’s examine Grand Rapids as a near-ideal jumpoff point or base for several days of riding. The main trail running north-south on the east side of town provides access to gas stations, hotels and restaurants, as well as the all-important recreational bridge over the Mississippi River. Numerous hotels are just a short hop of one or two city blocks off the main trail, including the
Timberlake Lodge, IM Hotel, AmericInn, Best Western Plus and the Radisson Country Inn & Suites.
The Judy Garland Museum—the most notable tourist attraction in Grand Rapids—is just a stone’s throw

from those nearby hotels and is accessible by sled when there’s adequate snow cover. The world-famous singer and actress was born in that house (now the museum) on June 10, 1922. She and her two older sisters spent several happy childhood years there before her father took the family to California, where she found stardom. Her fascinating life, with all its ups and downs, is well chronicled at the museum, augmented by a large collection of memorabilia—including the carriage that brought Dorothy and Toto into the Emerald City in “The Wizard of Oz.”
If you enjoy snowmobiling with a little extra, Grand Rapids will put you in the center of the action, ready to enjoy all that Itasca County has to offer.

It’s not all deep woods riding in Itasca County, as this nicely smooth road trail picture proves.
Samantha Solheid graduated from New Prague High School in May 2023. She is attending College of St. Benedict, studying Business/ Finance/Actuarial. Samantha is active member of the New Prague Snowdrifters. She is the daughter of Daniel and Kristine Solheid and is the recipient of a $1300 scholarship.
The MnUSA scholarship program will be continued in 2024. Application forms will be available on MnUSA’s website under Programs.
Samantha, “What would you do to educate and stop riders of all ages and experience levels from trespassing and to stay on the trails?”
With snowmobiling comes a greater responsibility for everyone: to respect the generosity of landowners and stay on the trail. Although this is an easy concept, some people still do not seem to follow it. As time goes on, more youth riders get their licenses, and more people are on the trails. Many adults know to stay on the trails because of their experience and the fact that many of them own land and have more respect for what that means; however, do the youth know this? I believe that we have to expose the younger riders to how important staying on the trails is, and what could happen if we lose the trails because people do not follow this simple rule. One way we can do this is by promoting more safety and rules on social media.
From what I know, the Snowmobilers Association has a Facebook page, but it does not have an Instagram page. Being a teenager myself, I can say that I use Instagram far more often than Facebook, and so do many people my age. We would reach not only a larger audience, but the audience we need to (teenagers) with a new social media platform. As I previously mentioned, many adults are aware of the importance of staying on the trails and respecting others’ property. It is the teenagers who often go off trail and do not consider the landowners and
the effects of their actions. With an Instagram page, we could make posts about how important it is to stay on the trails. We would also be able to make posts recognizing landowners who so graciously let us use their land for our trails. Being able to see the names of our landowners would make people care, and they would not just consider their straying as “fun,” but as trespassing onto an individual’s property.
The process is simple. Create a public account on Instagram and make posts with whatever content is necessary: in this case, the importance of staying on the trails. A public account allows anyone to follow it, and would increase the number of followers. It also allows followers from all over access and see the information. You are allowed to post up to ten pictures in a post at a time. These could be of different landowners, people who run the association, a blank screen with writing on it, or even a new model of snowmobile that just came out. Using fun and interesting snowmobile pictures, such as videos and facts would get people interested in the association. People who follow the account can then “repost” the original posts on their own Instagrams and expose people who may not follow the original account to
the posts. Using the posts to promote safety, personalize landowners and promote staying on the trails would expose many younger riders to positive reinforcement of the rules. Typically, one’s follower count on Instagram is far higher than their follower account on Facebook. With these reposts, a much larger audience will be reached including those who may not know about the association and would want to join. This account could also be used to send out important information such as meetings, working opportunities, and potential fundraisers.
These simple posts could be what educates teenagers in the area to stay on the trails and be more involved in the association. It is upsetting for the landowners who constantly have to remind snowmobilers to stay on the trail, and it is also upsetting for the riders who abide by the rules. If we do not take action and find a solution for this problem, we could lose many of the trails we currently have. We have the ability to make the change and promote a safer trail. An easy and effective way to do this is to make an Instagram account to reach the younger generation and promote safety, respect, and the rules of the trail. It would reach the target audience, and it would also spread to many more people than a Facebook post.
In the late 1960s and the early 1970s, snowmobile sales were at their peak. The snowmobile dealers were learning that upselling their customers with clothing, accessories, and memorabilia was downright profitable.
To play on this demand, the factories called on a Minnesota toy manufacturer to design a mini version of their brand of snowmobile. No cheap Japanese toy, but one with accurate lines and colors. This company was called Normatt Products Inc. (1968-1974). Company President Matt Riesgraff, uniquely, got the manufacturers to “sponsor” (read: finance the R&D) on his models, and they were great replicas. Today, they are coveted and expensive.
behind, Ski-Doo joined the fray in 1971 with their TNT toy. 1972 began production of John Deere toys (over 100,000 John Deere toys were sold). Also in 1972, Yamaha joined with a replica of their GP433 model. Rupp commissioned their Nitro replica.
Wow—a total of 459,700 toys were sold. So why are they so expensive now? Because most were worn out by kids and eventually thrown away. Coveted, these days, are pristine originals—in the box.
First up was Polaris, who ordered 30,000 toy replicas of their 1969 Polaris Mustang. This was followed by Arctic Cat who miniaturized their 1970 Panther. Not far

If you have not read Larry Preston’s Star Fire Kids published in 2013, it’s something you must do before you die. It is still available on the web. Whatever you pay, it will be worth the read. Larry covered the magnificent Polaris race team wins in the 1970s and 80s. His work followed the team by year and by race. The book is packed with behind-the-scenes stories of factory builders, race mechanics, and drivers.
Up until 1993, the factory was squeezing every bit of handling and performance from their line of leaf-spring TXs. As of the 1974 season, they had not fully developed the “tocome” RXL IFS racers. The USSA killed the Sno-Pro circuit in 1974. To answer the change, the factory produced the PDC (Professional Drivers Circuit) TX Starfire machines. The PDCs were made for 340, 440, and 650cc classes. These sleds were totally redesigned and the TX-like hoods, masked factory improvements to the eyes of other brands. The PDCs worked and Polaris maintained their racing dominance. Go get Larry’s book— that’s an order!

About the author: Phil Little was introduced to snowmobiling as an advertising agency executive. Polaris was his first account. That allowed him a free 372cc Jlo Colt to ride. In 1967, he started racing. In 1970, he was fortunate to race the invincible Ski-Doo Blizzards of that year. In the years since, he has had the hobby of building custom vintage sleds. He does not own modern sleds, and at 82, still rides. One of his future builds will be a TX modified to accept the PDC hood (it is possible; Phil checked).
On February 17th, the New Prague Snow Drifters will be once again hosting their Vintage Show and Fun Run. This year’s featured sled is the Ski-Whiz.
Prizes will be awarded for: 1. Most Authentic; 2. Best in Show; 3. “WTH” (What the Hell is That?). Prizes awarded at 2:30pm. Loud pipes are welcome.
The Fun Run—which begins at noon sharp—will travel on one of the club’s trails (parade lap).
The event will be held at the St. Patrick Tavern and Restaurant, located on Hwy 13 between Prior Lake and
New Prague. Pork burgers and hot dogs will be on the menu. Find them on Facebook: New Prague Snow Drifters. Proceeds will help defray the cost of the club’s recently upgraded groomer. Donations are welcome.

The Big Lake Sno-Cruisers Snowmobile Club concluded the 4th annual Hot Dishes for Cool Trails fundraising event on Saturday December 2nd at Lupulin Brewing in Big Lake, MN. The cookoff featured many unique hot dish entries including seafood, wild rice, pastas, and many more flavors that were devoured by the judges and the general public who purchased a tasting ticket for the event. The cooks squared off against one another to try to win the top cash prize of half the entry pot as well as the People’s Choice awards and Lupulin’s staff picks.
Lupulin also featured an annual brew made exclusive for the club called the “Sno-Cruiser Special.” This year’s infusion was a chocolate peanut butter porter with butterscotch flavoring to yield a delightful Scotcheroo pairing to the hot dishes. A portion of the proceeds from those beer sales are generously donated by the brewery to the club as well as the gracious hosting at their state-of-the-art event space called “The Stave.”
The club and brewery look forward to future growth with the event as it is a great way to break bread with the community and fellow snowmobilers upon the start of the season. Please follow sno-cruisers.org and/ or lupulinbrewing.com for future details on the 2024 cookoff and let your favorite Betty Crocker types know they can showcase their favorite family, secret, or cookbook recipe while having a chance to win money!
