From the MnUSA President

Always Bring a Flashlight that Works Scott Wakefield This year, as I celebrate 50 years of active riding, I reflect on my many snowmobile “adventures,” and as a kid, riding the ditches of Highway 7 east of Appleton, Minnesota, to the county line and back. What a difference that was from growing up at 965 Thomas Street in Hutchinson, Minnesota, and ending up in Waconia on the north side of a 4,000-acre lake with endless riding outside my front door. Riding on a 4,000-acre lake can get to you after a while, so I took time to venture out and bust a trail through cattails and muskrat huts to the north of the lake to Highway 7 on a ‘73 Arctic Cat Panther 440 (with permission of course). I would then head into Carver Park, to Victoria, Minnesota, along Highway 5, where I do believe the MnUSA Vice President had some interesting rides of his life also; then head to McGregor as a teenager. (Note: Great info on MnUSA Region 2 which includes McGregor, in this issue of Minnesota Snowmobiling.) You know, throw the bale of hay in the back of the pickup on a learner’s permit at 15, but with sleds in tow, to the Pexa mobile homes on Minnewawa. Wow, then we hit the big time, rode during the day, and the Tesar racing guys rode at night. Speaking of riding at night, it’s a whole different experience, back in the more modern days, we would do a “saddlebag tour.” One was to drop off at the Swampsiders parking lot, and head to Crane Lake, down to Ely and hit Virginia on the way back to the Swampsiders parking lot over a weekend. I was riding the “grinder,” a 1991 Arctic Cat EXT with the heat exchanger in front of the track. If you owned one, you knew the snow/ice would freeze overnight, and even if you really tried to get the ice between the track and frame out, you never got all of it; hence the “grinder “ moniker.

As we left Ash River after dark and headed the last 21 miles to Crane Lake, I was tail gunner, and I can remember so vividly, a little dip in the trail. I hit the bottom of the dip and simultaneously hit the throttle, heard a big bang, and that was it. The engine died and the lights went out. I saw the last taillight of my buddy turn the corner—the last taillight I would see for a while. As I sat there I thought, you don’t think they will go all the 21 miles to Crane Lake before looking back? Yep. I had a flashlight but to no avail, the batteries were dead. The woods get really quiet, really dark and really cold in a hurry. So, after what seemed like more than 21 miles of riding, a headlight appeared, and lo and behold, it was my buddy. “What seems to be the problem?” he said as he flashed his flashlight in my face. “You tell me,” I said. You’ve got the flashlight that works.” So I opened the hood and saw the clutch sitting in the bottom of my belly pan, snapped off at the crankshaft. So off we went, 21 miles to Crane Lake, in tow, hitting the lake just before midnight. In the distance to the left I saw an Arctic Cat dealer sign, so we towed it over to the sign and left the key in it. After a late night, the following morning I rode back to the Arctic Cat dealer and they already had a retro crank in the sled. As they didn’t have the one needed in stock, they told me to run it 40-50 mph, and that should be fine to get back to the Swampsiders. Well, it ran so well, I did the whole trip to Ely and down to Virginia without a hitch. Snowmobile dealers are the best folks in the world. When they know you’re in a pinch, they will do the extras to get you back on the trail. With your membership card/sticker you will get a new updated RAD booklet. When you’re down for the count, use that booklet. It’s full of help from our very giving members of MnUSA, and it’s a membership perk! And a big THANK YOU to all the members who volunteer to offer a warm shop or tools to get you back on the trail! Thank you, thank you.

Adventure starts here.

Minnesota Snowmobiling

From the MnUSA Vice President

Let the Season Begin Tim Heinen I swear that this summer just flew by. It seems that I just put my sled into summer storage. It has been a wild summer, as I have been busier than when I worked full time. As the saying goes, I need to go back to work so I can relax more. I have too many projects to work on and so little time that I didn’t even take a vacation this summer. (My wife is not happy about that.) I do see light at the end of the tunnel. Wait, am I dying? I know that the time is coming to relax for a while. Why? Well, the State Fair has come and gone. I didn’t go, as I am a cold weather person who would go if it was 50 degrees or colder outside. The infinite Hay Days, the official start of winter, has come and gone, and by the time this publication comes out, the best show on earth, MnUSA Fall Workshop will be starting up (just bragging a little here). Let’s jump back to Hay Days. The heat finally broke and the weather was nice for the most part; still a little warm for me though.

how to dress up mine. First, I need to insulate then heat for sure. Just because last year my sled had a running problem as the throttle would not return, I had to pull the throttle bodies off, but it was -10 degrees. I know what you’re thinking, Tim likes it cold, but there is a time when your fingers can’t handle the cold, and this was one of those times. So, a fellow rider offered me his heated trailer to work on my sled. After that I was hooked on heating my trailer. I’ll do those items first, and for the other fancy stuff I’ll do those in steps over time. Just another project for me to do. Like I said, I am busy all the time. So that brings me to the question, why do people like you and me enjoy snowmobiling? I think it is the fun that we all have. When you stop to take a break from riding, all you talk about is the adventure you just had. You disconnect from the stress of everyday life when riding over groomed trails or the fresh powder after a night of snowfall. It’s the scenery that you experience that you normally don’t see on a highway trip. The fresh crisp air you breathe, and after riding all day, it’s the good night’s sleep one has, as you’re so darn tired. That is why I like it, and I am sure it’s the same for you. So let the season begin. Bring it on Mother Nature; we are ready!

As I walked around and took in the sleds jumping, it brought back memories of when I was a teenager and I did some of those stunts. Don’t get me wrong, it was totally by accident as I was snow blinded and didn’t see the big snowbanks. Talk about needing to change your shorts, but I survived, nothing broke body wise (my body), just hoods and windshields. Back then the repairs didn’t cost you a second mortgage to fix. You definitely get your adrenaline flowing when seeing all the latest sleds, reminisce with the old sleds, and all the new gadgets for your riding pleasure.

We Gonna Rock Down to Electric Avenue Doug Franzen Earlier this year I purchased an electric vehicle (EV). At first it felt odd to drive. It’s too easy; much simpler than driving a car with an internal combustion engine. EVs are fun to drive. The car is so very quiet. The acceleration is quick and powerful, and the “dynamic braking” is very cool. Dynamic braking occurs simply by lessening the pressure on the acceleration pedal (formerly known as the gas pedal). Energy from the braking friction is returned to the battery. I found myself smiling as I passed gas stations. The most noticeable drawback of an EV is battery fatigue. My EV can travel approximately 225 miles on an 80% charge (like a cell phone, battery life is extended when the charge generally is within a range of 20% to 80%). This is no problem when city driving. However, highway mileage is much less. On a recent trip to Rochester, I left Bloomington with the car display showing 210 miles on the charge. Arriving in Rochester left me with only enough battery charge to drive approximately 30 miles; clearly not enough to get home. Luckily, I found a charger in a nearby parking ramp. The most urgent problem with EVs is a lack of charger infrastructure. There are simply are not enough public chargers, and many are either occupied, broken, or not powerful enough. There are three levels of chargers. Level 3 will fully recharge the battery in about an hour. With a level 2 charger, 7-8 hours will do the trick. The charger I found in Rochester was a level 1 which takes about 24 hours to fully charge the vehicle. After a modest charge in Rochester, I limped to a car dealership in Owatonna and found a vacant level 3 charger. I now have a level 2 charger in my garage. The charger and the installation are spendy, but my “fuel” cost is now down to about 7 dollars a month.

It’s a fair question to ask—what does this have to do with snowmobiling? The answer is that electric snowmobiles just might be the future of our sport. Ski-Doo has announced production of a 2024 Grand Touring Electric sled for commercial use, like short distance guided tours. Taiga, another Canadian company, is taking orders for massproduced electric snowmobiles. Both Polaris and Arctic Cat are making substantial investments in this technology and are in the development stage. Clearly, the industry is showing an intense interest. The electric snowmobiles have many of the same problems as the EVs. The biggest issue is very limited mileage. The batteries drain quickly in subzero temperature. Depending on speed, one might be able to ride for an hour, at best. Charging infrastructure is also a major problem—the number of chargers in the middle of a given forest is approximately zero. Finally, electric snowmobiles are quite expensive— much more than gas powered sleds. Perhaps the government will offer snowmobile tax credits to make these sleds more affordable. Undoubtedly, these issues need to be solved before mass acceptance. In other words, the electric snowmobile is not yet ready for prime time. Electric snowmobiles have the potential to significantly grow our sport. In my line of work, I come across people who really don’t like snowmobiles. The critics I have spoken with always complain about the noise and polluting gas fumes. Their position is not altogether unreasonable. If the electric snowmobiles catch on, these problems disappear. Likewise, much of our political opposition should disappear. It seems odd to think of snowmobiling as a “silent sport.” A fast, fun, silent sport. No time soon but I’m all for it. What do you think?

IT DOESN’T GET ANY BETTER THAN THIS!

So, the good things about EVs are they are fun, they are fast, they are silent, and gas fumes are nonexistent. The problems include limited mileage on a charge, particularly on the highway; the charging infrastructure is spotty outside of the metro area. Like any new technological application, the industry should eventually solve most of, if not all the problems with EVs. Indeed, vehicles with mileage capabilities exceeding 400 miles per charge are already on the market.

Meet the Candidates Candidate for President

I’m Mark Kavanaugh from Brainerd, Minnesota and I am running for President of MnUSA. Many of you know me but I’m sure many more do not, so I would like to introduce myself.

S AR E 5Y

Elections for MnUSA officers will be held at the MnUSA Annual Meeting to be held at Fall Workshop at the Holiday Inn in Lakeville on October 28, 2023. Current members are eligible to vote in person or by absentee ballot. Absentee ballots are available by contacting the MnUSA office and must be returned postmarked no later than October 18. Elected officials serve a one-year term. Nominations for offices will be re-opened at the annual meeting.

MARK KAVANAUGH

Currently, I am the President of the Crow Wing County Snowmobile Trails Association, a position I have held for 12 years. The CWCSTA is made up of the 12 clubs in Crow Wing County and we have roughly 800 MnUSA members. From 2012 to 2018 I served MnUSA’s Executive Board as Treasurer, Vice President, President, and Past President. I am a past member of the Brainerd Snodeos, of which I served as director, secretary, and treasurer. Currently, I am a member of the Pequot Brushpilots and serve as a director. I have been a member of MnUSA since 1993 and have been a snowmobiler for 57 years. My reasons for running are pretty straightforward—I’m old school MnUSA but realize that we are in a transitional stage of the organization. While I very much enjoy trying new approaches to challenges facing the organization, I don’t intend to reinvent the wheel when a repair will fix the problem. My agenda is fairly simple—establish better working relationships with all the clubs in the State, work the DNR to further the sport, work with our legislators on both the State and Federal levels, and establish closer ties to our national organizations. For those of you who know me, you know that my number one priority when it comes to all things snowmobiling is to have FUN! Elections will be held at the MnUSA Fall Workshop, October 27th to 29th, in Lakeville, MN. If you can’t be at the event, you can request an absentee ballot from the MnUSA Office.

MnUSA News Candidate for Vice President

MIKE CLEVENGER

My experiences have taught me the leadership qualities it takes to run for a MnUSA Executive Board position. Not only have I been Club President for three southern Minnesota clubs, but I have also served as the Lead Region Director for Region 5. Currently, I am serving as Lead Director, Region 5 Director, and Chairman of the Board for two local clubs. Along with these duties I am also a member of the MN Snowmobile Advisory Committee which partners with the MN DNR to work together on snowmobile issues. Being in these leadership positions, I believe has prepared me to take on the task of your next Vice President. At a very young age my parents introduced me and my siblings to snowmobiling. Club activities, trail sign maintenance and trail signage are additional tasks that I dedicate myself to so that the sport of snowmobiling can live on. Not only have I been involved with the MSDRS Racing Series as Director, but I have also worked with all three clubs I have been associated with to put on racing events and fun days. To get youth excited and create new riders we are also snowmobile safety instructors. I have attended two ISC events and was a volunteer committee member for the ISC held in Minneapolis. The other ISC event I have attended was in Winnipeg, Canada. The most recent Fall Workshop my wife and I served as Co-Chairman, however, this was the third Fall Workshop we have helped organize. We have also done the summer event when it was a camping outing, plus now that it is a single day event. Setting up the MnUSA booth at many events in our Region together with helping at Hay Days is something that we commit to. Without members the organization cannot have a legislative influence which strengthens our mission. My love of the sport is what drives me to want to represent Region 5 clubs, and hopefully be able to represent Minnesota in any way I am needed. Your support would be appreciated. Additional candidates on next page »

Request Your Absentee Ballot MnUSA will hold its annual elections at the Fall Workshop. Each member 18 years of age or older and in good standing may request an absentee ballot from the MnUSA office if he/she cannot attend the meeting. A husband and wife must each request their own ballot. The request may be made by calling 763-577-0185; fax 763577-0186; by writing to 7040 Lakeland Ave. N. #212, Brooklyn Park, MN 55428-5616; in person; or by email to mnusaoffice@ popp.net. The absentee ballots must be received by the MnUSA office postmarked no later than October 18, 2023. Instructions will be included in your ballot. Meet the Candidates

GORDON HEITKE Candidate for Secretary

I appreciate my colleagues from Region 3 nominating and supporting me for the office of MnUSA Secretary. I have been an avid snowmobiler for over 50 years and a member of MnUSA for the past 31 years. I am a member of the East Central Riders Snowmobile Club and the Northern Pine Riders Snowmobile Club. I currently serve as the MnUSA Treasurer and as a member of the Communications Committee, Bylaws Committee, and the Minnesota Snowmobile Advisory Committee (MSAC)as the Region 3 representative. I was a Region 3 Director prior to being elected treasurer. I am familiar with and prepared to carry out the duties and responsibilities of the Office of Secretary regarding the management of records, notification of meetings, and the timely distribution of meeting minutes. These are duties for which I have previously been responsible. The MnUSA Secretary also serves on the Executive Board and Office Functions Committee. I have spent a career working with governing boards and committees, and overseeing administrative offices. I have professional experience with organizational development and management, strategic and financial planning, the development and administration of policies and procedures, and legislation. My goals as Secretary, if elected, will be: 1) to ensure the association records are properly managed and organized within the office and storage, 2) to establish a records management system and retention schedule, and 3) to have unapproved meeting minutes available for viewing by the Board of Directors, clubs and general membership within the timeline prescribed in the bylaws or sooner. My goals as a member of the Executive Board will be: 1) complete the actions currently underway to modernize the office to increase operational efficiencies and reallocate the saved staff time to better serve our members, clubs and directors, 2) actively recruit the next generation of MnUSA leaders, and 3) undertake a planning process involving our members, clubs and stakeholders to identify the critical issues affecting the future of snowmobiling and MnUSA, and develop strategies to address those issues. This is an important time for the future of MnUSA as memberships and the demand for our services have increased significantly. Changes are currently underway in the office to meet the current and future needs of our clubs and members. The recently created position of Office Administrator and technology upgrades are currently being integrated into the office operations. I have been directly involved with these office upgrades and am ready to work with the new officers to complete them in a timely manner in order to provide a higher level of service to our MnUSA clubs and members this season. 10

JANET WIDNESS

Candidate for Treasurer

I am excited to be running for the MnUSA Treasurer position after serving as secretary for seven terms over the years. Being in that position, I have learned all aspects of MnUSA and what it takes to make everything run smoothly.

My background covers many years as a bookkeeper at my present job to previous. I have always loved to work with numbers starting at a young age. The #1 asset that keeps the association running is … memberships!… which is the backbone to keeping us in the black. I shall help monitor our expenses so that the association doesn’t spend beyond our income and see where we could save some funds. We just have to make sure we balance with more in the checkbook. We need to improve members’ benefits and include the younger generation, so our association can gain more members which in turn generates more funds. Besides being treasurer, I will be helping the Executive Board protecting the sport at all levels in government including working with the DNR; the importance of volunteers who work on the trail systems; and educate non-members that MnUSA also works on issues outside the state including riding in other snow states. I am also Charity/Awards Committee chairperson since 2009 and member of several MnUSA committees. My husband Woody and I have worked the booth at Hay Days for many years and other activities in promoting MnUSA and memberships. We belong to several clubs including Otter County Trail Association, Otter Trail Riders and Dalton Snow Thrashers. Our home is in Region 9 located on Stuart Lake near Clitherall, where we just ride out our garage door and hit trails about a mile away. We have so many beautiful trails and are proud to show them off. I would appreciate your vote for the MnUSA Treasurer position. I will work hard to help the association move forward and keep a positive focus to grow, educate, communicate and get youth involved. The snowmobilers we have met through MnUSA are more than friends, they are like family, and want to keep it fun for all ages!

Snowmobile Day – October 28, 2023 Snowmobile Day is a day to celebrate snowmobiling and begin preparations for the upcoming season. Snowmobile manufactures are inviting snowmobile clubs, local dealers, associations, and snowmobile groups to begin the season with a party that might include games, activities and more such as a “show and shine” event featuring vintage and custom snowmobiles; having towing and groomer vehicles on display; safety training class; or maintenance and winter check-ups for snowmobiles and trailers. Please let MnUSA know if your club is planning an event to help promote it. The snowmobile manufacturers will award $200 to qualifying snowmobile clubs/associations/ snowmobile groups in the United States and Canada that apply for support to help put on a party. If your snowmobile group would like to participate and maybe receive some money to help, fill out the application form found at https://snowmobile.org/snowmobile-day-2023. html and submit it no later than October 10, 2023. The snowmobile manufacturers will choose from all the applications submitted for groups to be awarded money for throwing an awesome Snowmobile Day party. 12

n o i t a n i t Des Region 2 AITKIN COUNTY

Some of the best trails in the region and state are in Aitkin County, going all the way down to the top half of Mille Lacs Lake and all the way north to Hill City which covers about 2,000 miles squared. What makes this area a desired destination is the varied terrain and the great communities it has for those perfect timed pit stops, small loops, and big loops. You have the larger cities like Aitkin, McGregor and Hill City, but then you have the little towns like Palisade and McGrath. And what great supporters of the sport with clubs like the Tamarack Sno-Flyers, Aitkin Sno-Drifters, Haypoint Jackpine Club, and the Giese Sno Cruisers. Avenue of Pines Trail.

Region 2 is made up of counties in North Central Minnesota. It has over 2,500 miles of snowmobile trails, mostly maintained by 33 different snowmobile clubs. Region 2 has extremely diverse scenery and terrain to entertain and entice a wide range of snowmobilers. Minnesota has two national forests—Chippewa and Superior—and BOTH reside in part in Region 2. Region 2 is the gateway to Canada and Voyageurs National Park from International Falls to Ely. Region 2 is also the home of the Mesabi Iron Range from Grand Rapids to Hibbing to Virginia and beyond. With terrain ranging from open forest, logging and mining roads and abandoned railroad grades to rolling wooded ridges, lakes and tight winding trails and portages, Region 2 has a lot of variety. Let’s take a tour of Region 2 counties, trails and highlights from south to north. 18

Oh, the fun in Aitkin. Head out from the 40 Club; have fun running the river behind the Landing, watch out for the eelpout, or head down to the Farm Island Store for a fuel stop or to warm up; run the Farm Island Lake and eventually head over to McGregor and Mark’s Bar for broasted chicken for a lunch stop; walk over to Grand Timber Bank and get more cash from the ATM; run along 65 up to Willy’s for fuel, or check out the new sleds, at Willy’s Marine; head east to Bann’s and plan your next move. Run Lake Minnewawa, to the northeast end and get into the Savanna State Forest with tight twisties; check out the Continental Divide and loop back down along what had to be an old horse trail. Grab the short spur to Big Sandy and hit some wide-open lake riding, well-marked of course, back to Lake Minnewawa and head south to the T in da swamp. Choices….choices. Head east and stop at the Tamarack Sno-Flyers club house and warm up and shoot the breeze; or head back west and south to McGregor and then start the trek back toward Aitkin. More wide-open spaces in the swamps, farm fields, and back to the 40 Club. Get up the

Minnesota Snowmobiling

next morning and do something completely different because that’s what Aitkin County offers you—fun trail riding, different varying types of riding, and big loops, and small loops, on some of the best groomed, marked, designed trails in the State of Minnesota. And every day is different than the one before—let your adventures await you in Aitkin County.

CARLTON COUNTY

As snowmobilers, we can all agree we have our favorite riding areas and destinations. Here are some of the places you might like riding when in Region 2. In the southern half there are many state forests including Fond du Lac, Nemadji, General Andrews, Solana, Savanna, and Riverlands. Not to be left out, the state parks are also wonderful to visit; they include Moose Lake, Jay Cooke, and Savanna Portage. There are also many corridor trails that include 31, 36, 41, 43, 47, 51, 80, and 83. Some of the state trails include Willard Munger, Matthew Lourey, and the Gandy Dancer which borders Wisconsin. From Moose Lake you can take the Soo Line Southwest past Genola, East to Wisconsin, Northwest to Bemidji and beyond. The many fine clubs that reside here work hard to provide the best possible trail conditions the lake effect snow machine from Lake Superior can throw your way. The scenery is spectacular from the many hardwood and pine forests, spruce and tamarack bogs, to farm fields and everything in between. The wildlife is quite varied as riders often see moose, deer, bobcat, wolves, and yes, in the spring, even bear. Consider putting Region 2 on your itinerary for the coming season.

ITASCA AND THE ‘WEST IRON RANGE’

The ‘main vein’ of the Mesabi Iron Range runs west to east from Grand Rapids to Hibbing to Virginia. South of Grand Rapids is mostly forestry land managed by Blandin Paper Company and pristinely marked and maintained snowmobile trails by the Drift Skippers club. Grand Rapids is the beginning of the Taconite Trail with lodging options from the luxurious Timberlake Hotel in the center of town to the simple Jig Rock Ranch just north of town; both with groomed GIA trail access. As you ride west of Grand Rapids, the trails are taken over by the Deer River Bushwackers which lead you north up into the Chippewa National Forest and the Avenue of Pines Trail which is a ‘must ride’ experience. North of Grand Rapids you will get into the hilly and windy Soumi Trail, maintained by the 38’ers Club that will take you through woodlands and lake trails and the towns of Marcel, Bigfork and Effie maintained by the Marcel Snowdrifters. If you want to see the Iron Range you would take the Keystone Trail off the Taconite that is maintained by the Snow Rangers club. This is the ‘key stone’ that links you to all the Iron Range cities on Highway 169 that runs northeast on the south side of the Mesabi Iron Range vein of ore. These trails will give you views into the open surface mining pits, large piles of topsoil called ‘stripping dumps’ and giant red piles of taconite also known as ‘lean ore’ or ‘jig rock’. As you travel east, the Greenway Club will take over and link to St. Louis County trails and the towns of Hibbing and on to Virginia. Greenway will also take you south to the continued on next page »

You can also stay on the north side of the Mesabi vein of ore where the Lawron Trail Riders and Swampsiders link you back to the Taconite Trail and northeast into St. Louis County. Get more information, maps and lodging options at visitgrandrapids.com

CENTRAL & SOUTHERN ST. LOUIS, THE ‘EAST IRON RANGE’ On Minnesota’s Iron Range, club trails connect towns like Hibbing, Virginia, Eveleth and Hoyt Lakes to the state’s elite snowmobile trails, the Taconite and the Arrowhead. Enjoy easy trail access from local lodging properties and restaurants, and explore the Superior National Forest, Sturgeon River State Forest, and the borderlands’ Kabetogama State Forest. The Trailhawks, Ranger and Pathblazers snowmobile clubs pride themselves on keeping the trails of the Iron Range in top shape all winter and completing numerous improvement projects during the spring, summer and fall. Snowmobilers receive a warm welcome in this region, and riders can be sure they will have thousands of miles to explore, including lots of iconic northland scenery like lakes and trees, without the hassle of abundant driveways and road crossings. Ride into the deep north woods, then return to a wide variety of places to stay, restaurant options, and even a year-round campground in Chisholm. NORTHWEST ITASCA AND KOOCHICHING

Many of you have a favorite riding place “Up North”. While thinking about your favorite place, take some time to hear about all the opportunities that exist in Region 2. The region is a very large area with many little hidden gems. The trails in the Chippewa National Forest are among them. From Northome, you can get gas At Fisher’s Station, get a snack at Northome Grocery, warm up at the Municipal Liquor, hop on the West Bowstring Snowmobile Trail that is maintained by the Ridge Runners Snowmobile Club of Northome, and wind your way through the Chippewa National Forest. On the way, stop along the trail in Alvwood at the Hoot & Holler for a unique stop. The local business supporters are happy to have you come to their area and the Ridge Runners encourage you to support them! If you are looking for remote areas you might consider starting at Big Falls Municipal for a sandwich and refreshment, then take the Caldwell Brook Trail or the Lunstrom Trail toward Effie. The Shop in the City of Bigfork is nearby for your unexpected repair needs. Region 2 and the Ridge Runners hope you come and enjoy the snow. Everyone works hard to turn that snow into a playground for you to ride and enjoy responsibly. Ride safe, ride right and respect the landowners. Some of the trails in Region 2 might become your “New favorite riding place!”

NORTHERN ST. LOUIS

This is the Ely, Crane Lake and Boundary Waters area. Although snowmobiling isn’t permitted in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area itself, many consider the terrain on the area trails to be the most remote and wilderness area of Minnesota. The area is located at the western end of the Superior National Forest that travels east to the North Shore. The Taconite Trail’s final destination is Ely with the Grand Ely Lodge and Paddle Inn Motel being fine lodging options. The Ely Igloo Club maintains about 115 miles of trail options around Ely which you can follow northeast up

LAWRON Trail Riders ‘Where Lawrence Lake meets the Iron Range’ The Lawron Trail Riders maintain 82 miles of trails north of the west end of the Mesabi Iron Range in north central Minnesota. Originally started in 1965 by Elmer Cone (who also founded the International Snowmobile Hall of Fame, Eagle River, WI - ISHOF.com) and a group of neighbors then organized in 1967 and called themselves the ‘Lawrence Snow Stompers’. In the mid-70’s the club started to include 3 wheelers so they renamed themselves the ‘Lawron Trail Riders’. The ‘LAWRON’ name comes from ‘LAWrence Lake and iRON Range’. The Lawron trail network connects the Taconite Trail to the north and the Clearwater Trail maintained by 38’ers club to the west to Iron Range cities such as Nashwauk and Keewatin and Greenway club trails to the south as well as trail networks north of Hibbing and Chisholm maintained by Path Blazers club. Currently Lawron has 105 members and just last year completed construction of their new 40’x72’ club house which also serves as groomer storage and safety training

Byron Snow Bears Club Celebrates 50 Years! The Byron Snow Bears Snowmobile Club was established in 1973, celebrating a 50-year anniversary in 2023. An 11/11 celebration is planned to include current and founding members who have made the club’s long existence possible. The Snow Bears’ mission has remained the same over the years: supporting the sport of snowmobiling by maintaining trails, promoting snowmobile activities/businesses, and supporting various community activities.

Relax and enjoy our heated indoor pool.

The club of over 40 members/families maintains more than 40 miles of snowmobile trails in total—connecting the cities of Byron, Stewartville, Rochester, Oronoco, and Pine Island. A special thanks to the landowners for their support of snowmobile trails through their land and to the club members who help prep trails each season, plus run the groomer. Many snowmobile enthusiasts may recall the 25-year Great Southern Minnesota Grass Drag, Swap Meet & Vintage Show event hosted in Douglas, MN, which ended after the 2019 event. However, starting in 2022, the club now co-hosts the “Great Southern Minnesota Swap Meet & Vintage Show” located at the Dodge County Fairgrounds in Kasson, MN the first weekend in October (10/1/2023 this year). Go to www.byronsnowbears.com or visit them on Facebook to see events, learn of updates, and/or to join the club.

RECAP

Huge crowds and mostly beautiful weather helped kick off the official start of the winter season with Hay Days 2023 in the books. The Sno Barons never fail to keep adding and building to make Hay Days the biggest and premier snowmobiling event in the world. Attendees experienced the most advanced technology in snowmobiling today alongside with all the memorabilia and nostalgia of years gone by.

One of the many creative ways to navigate the 180-acre Hay Days’ site.

Witnessing speeds of over 150 miles per hour, the Grass Drags have become a Hay Days tradition and a place where world champions are crowned. Motorsports of all kinds were represented at Hay Days with today’s hottest riders on snowmobiles, ATVs, and dirt bikes. The crowds were thrilled with the amazing aerial stunts and acrobatics. The Freestyle KABoom Show featured aerial stunts by riders on snowmobiles, dirt bikes and ATVs.

Established in 1980, the legendary Swap Meet has grown into the over 30-acre massive playground with 2,500 vendors wheeling and dealing. That’s over 23 football fields of every kind of equipment, accessories, and memorabilia imaginable.

The grass drags were a popular attraction where racers reach speeds of 150 miles per hour in less than 4 seconds.

Rum River Outlaw Grass Drags by Scott Wakefield It was hot and heavy at the Rum River Outlaw Grass Drags in Princeton this year, and the racing was pretty good too! I’ll be using the moniker one-word “Princeton” going forward versus having to say Rum River Outlaw Grass Drags in Princeton, which is a mouthful. Speaking of a mouthful, when did Princeton become the Food Truck Mecca of central Minnesota? Wow, what an impressive display of food choices from local vendors—very impressive. And as snowmobilers, we can pack it away. It was very nice to see that. Great job! Friday was so hot some intrepid attendees cooled off across the road in a farmer’s bean field under his irrigation system; smart. Are misters coming to Princeton in the future? The pits were hot too, as racers got in line to go through tech and setup; the reigning World Champion was in the pit area. I asked him what makes Princeton such a great place to race, and he said it was the competition between Canada and the US, and the first-class setup and help from the local racing association makes it so easy to race at Princeton. It’s a great prep before Hay Days too. On Saturday there was more racing with the 120 Kids oval racing, and, of course, the ever-popular lawn mower races. And if the racing isn’t enough, there is this little vendor and swap meet going on in the meantime. Ha!

A fair playing field is the key to legitimate racing.

The irrigator was in the right place at the right time to cool off.

Wow, what a great display of new sleds and gear ready for winter and ready for you. If you’re into vintage, the swap was full of great buys and really over the top this year. Thomas Snow Sports had some of the “3 Old Guys” around for a meet and greet which drew a good crowd all weekend. And the Midwest Vintage Snow Shows group had a great collection of “Back to the ‘80s” sleds on display—this year’s theme. MnUSA had a booth again this year and it was busy with questions and renewals. If I had to sum up Princeton 2023, I’d say it was hot and heavy. Late breaking news—more Princeton! Like more cow bell? And in the vein of Groundhog Day, ISR World Service of Grass Drags has announced they will be at Princeton on September 30th with grass drag racing along with a swap meet, vendors, and food. See more information on this under Racing News.
