WALKS WITH MATT Gain a deeper understanding of and appreciation for the science and beauty of Nature in the midst of seasonal changes. Dress for the weather and bring your binoculars. Matt Schuth has been a naturalist at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum for more than 30 years. A very popular guide, he is an expert on birds and other local wildlife as well as a keen observer of the way organisms adapt to the ever-changing conditions of their environment.

NOTE: As Minnesotans know, Mother Nature can be unpredictable! What may begin as a mushroom hunt may turn into warbler watching… that is the joy and spontaneity of nature, and of these explorations. Be prepared for unpredictable weather and a possible change of subject matter based on what Mother Nature has in store for participants during this session.

Examine flowers and grasses of the open fields and woodland edges of the Arboretum, including the Western edge of the Arboretum, close to the Director’s House. In addition to seeking bobolinks and meadowlarks, participants will learn details about the Arboretum’s bluebird program and perhaps even get up close and personal with baby bluebirds. Mary Meyer, University of Minnesota Professor, Extension Horticulturist, former Interim Director of the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum and past President of the American Society of Horticultural Science LEVEL: Advanced students, professionals, and Master Gardeners/Master Naturalists Gain professional-level knowledge in this 2-day intensive workshop that will focus on teaching students to identify a multitude of grasses that add beauty and interest to the summer and fall landscape. Being able to identify grasses will enable participants to read the landscape and landscape conditions, including soils, habitat, disturbance and past land uses. This workshop will provide an intensive, hands-on approach incorporating both classroom work and field study, utilizing the 1,200 acres of the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum as a living laboratory and classroom.

Identify warm season grasses in the field and lab, learn specialized terminology and distinguishing features, discuss the ecology of grasses, and practice identifying species from keys. Students will receive a certificate of attendance at the end of the second day of class.
