A Message From the Executive Director
For more than 60 years, the Arboretum has inspired visitors by showcasing the very best landscape plants for the northern climate. Many of those cold-hardy plants were developed right here at the Horticultural Research Center, whose legacy of plant breeding stretches back even further to its founding in 1908.
Today, the Arboretum is continuing to build on this strong foundation of horticultural innovation, evolving and expanding to meet the needs of today’s visitors and preserve the beauty of the landscape for generations to come. In Fiscal Year 2024, the Arboretum community experienced a year of extraordinary growth and change as we welcomed an astounding 683,794 visitors to the Arboretum, surpassing the previous year’s attendance by nearly 100,000 guests.
These visitors, along with our dedicated staff, volunteers, trustees, donors and more than 34,000 member households, all contribute to a thriving Arboretum community. Our organization also grew this year as we welcomed three new directors to the existing leadership team, positioning us for continued growth in the years to come:
David Senior, Director of Business & Finance, leads visitor experience and earned revenue operations — including the launch of the Arboretum’s new cafe, Rootstock — and ensures the financial sustainability of our organization.
Rachelle Crosby, Director of Facilities & Project Management, oversees the support and renewal of infrastructure and visitor amenities and planning and development of the campus. This includes two multiphase projects to build a New Entry Experience and Betty’s Apple House in the coming years.
Finally, Jared Rubinstein, Director of Horticulture & Collections, the newest addition to the team, is reinvigorating the Arboretum’s commitment to horticultural excellence and the stewardship of natural resources across our more than 1,200 acres.
David, Rachelle and Jared joined the leadership team — including Matt Clark, Director of Research; Tim Kenny, Director of Education; Susan Taylor, Director of Advancement; Brandon Miller, Curator of Plant Collections; and Erin Naveen, Human Resources Manager — at an important time as we kick off planning for improvements to the campus and work with the entire Arboretum community to envision the future of our treasured institution through the development of a strategic plan for 2025-2030. We are excited to share the outcome of this work and move forward on the plans together in the coming year.
Thank you for your support of the Arboretum!
Andrew Gapinski
Gardens & Collections
Visitors can discover something new throughout the Arboretum’s gardens, collections and natural areas in every season. In spring, brilliant tulips light up the Arboretum’s gardens, which transition to colorful displays of bold annuals in early summer. In the fall, visitors wander among trees decked in brilliant foliage in the Oak and Nut Collection before the leaves finally fall, revealing the architectural beauty of the trees observable only in winter. No matter the season, the Arboretum’s gardens and collections immerse visitors in nature while providing fresh ideas and inspiration for northern gardeners.
Annual gardens honor Snyder Building anniversary
In the fall of 2023, 40,000 tulip bulbs were planted in the Arboretum’s annual gardens by staff and volunteers. The tulips burst into bloom the following spring in a variety of gold and yellow hues to celebrate the golden anniversary of the Snyder Building — named for the Arboretum’s first director, Dr. Leon Snyder — which opened to the public in 1974.
Designed by horticulturist Duane Otto, the year’s golden color theme continued into the summer displays in the Annual Garden, around the Snyder Building and Oswald Visitor Center, and at the gatehouse.
On every visit, visitors can learn, explore and discover — or just marvel at the beauty of nature — in the Arboretum’s gardens and collections.
There’s so much to see across our 1,200 acres:
• 28 gardens — including multiple perennial gardens, six herb gardens and three rose gardens — invite visitors to relax, connect with nature and discover new ideas for home gardens.
• 22 displays and model landscapes provide inspiration and ideas for gardeners to employ in their home landscapes, including the Johanna Frerichs Garden for Wildlife and the Hedge Display.
• 39 tree and shrub collections, including the Azalea Collection, showcase a variety of plants well-suited to the northern landscape, including introductions from the University of Minnesota.
• The Ornamental Grass and Pine Collections are nationally accredited through the Plant Collection Network and the American Public Gardens Association.
• More than 6,100 taxa of plants are displayed throughout the gardens and collections.
“This is my happy place. I have been a member for many years. Each time I go, something new is in bloom. I’ve been to many botanical gardens, and none even come close to the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum.”
— Arboretum member
In 2024, the Annual Garden’s spring tulip display featured gold hues accented by purple and reds.

Research & Conservation
The Arboretum’s Horticultural Research Center (HRC) is a world leader in developing fruit trees and ornamental landscape plants that thrive in cold northern climates, an achievement that keeps food supplies local and drastically reduces shipping costs.
The Fruit Breeding Program has introduced more than 100 varieties of cold-hardy apples, grapes, cherries, raspberries and more, and the Woody Landscape Plant Breeding and Genetics Program has been responsible for the release of 46 cold-hardy plants. Visitors can find University of Minnesota introductions across the Arboretum landscape, easily identified by their signature maroon plant label.
The University of Minnesota has introduced more than 400 cold-hardy plant varieties, many developed at the Horticultural Research Center, including:
• 29 varieties of apple trees, such as Honeycrisp, Haralson, Zestar!®, SnowSweet®, SweeTango®, Rave®/First Kiss® and Triumph®
• 11 wine and table grape introductions, including Frontenac, La Crescent, Marquette, Itasca, Edelweiss, Swenson Red and Bluebell
• 15 cold-hardy azaleas from the popular Lights series, including Northern Lights, White Lights, Rosy Lights and Mandarin Lights.

Also based out of the HRC, the Plant Conservation Program is dedicated to the protection and conservation of rare species of the upper Midwest and native orchids of Minnesota through research, seed banking, restoration and reintroduction.
Plant Conservation Program by-the-numbers
• More than 400 native rare plant and orchid accessions
• More than 3,000 native seed sources banked
• Producing plants for restoration, education or reintroduction work in 6 states
• 29 plant populations rescued from construction sites and transplanted
Lady’s slipper orchids abroad
In May 2024, two of Minnesota’s native orchids traveled to London for the RHS Chelsea Flower Show along with David Remucal, the Arboretum’s Curator of Endangered Plants and Manager of the Plant Conservation Program, to spread awareness about native orchid conservation efforts.
Alongside representatives from conservation and research organizations across the U.S., Remucal displayed Minnesota’s state flower, the showy lady’s slipper (Cypripedium reginae), and the small white lady’s slipper (Cypripedium candidum), to educate and inspire visitors, spreading awareness about the diversity of orchids across the globe.
Education is central to the mission of the Arboretum. Each year, thousands of students of all ages participate in education programming at the Arboretum and via remote opportunities across the state. The robust curriculum — which includes youth and adult classes, school programs, summer camps and myriad drop-in activities — inspires learners and nurtures a connection between people, plants and the planet.
At the Marion Andrus Learning Center — and through outreach to area schools — instructors provide children with fun, hands-on, K-6 science standards-based school programs that use plants and nature as inspiration. Adult Education classes, headquartered at the Myers Education Center, cover a wide-range of topics, all with the goal of strengthening students’ connection to plants and the natural world.
Education by-the-numbers in Fiscal Year 2024:
• Youth and Adult Education programming engaged 56,621 total participants of all ages to learn about nature, conservation, horticulture and more against the backdrop of the Arboretum landscape.
• Three co-created art exhibits were funded through the 2024 Gala in the Gardens.
• A new solar array — an in-kind donation from Ziegler Energy Solutions — was installed on the roof of the Tashjian Bee and Pollinator Discovery Center with an associated learning station. The array produces about 51,000 kilowatt hours per year, enough energy to support one quarter of the Farm’s electrical needs!
Growing Together
In addition to classes and summer camps, visitors of the Arboretum learn about plants and people through demonstration gardens, interpretive signage and a wide range of exhibits, many co-curated in partnership with artists, designers, gardeners and growers from across the state.
In 2024, a new exhibit was planted in the Garden Gallery at the Farm at the Arb — a space dedicated to highlighting stories told by community partners through plants. The twoyear exhibit, “Seeds of Knowledge and Healing,” features edible and ornamental plants representative of Hmong culture. Curated by nurse and Hmong herbalist Zongxee Lee, the garden tells the story of the Lee family’s journey to the United States from Laos, along with Hmong medicinal herbs and the traditional knowledge of how to use them.
The Garden Gallery’s rotating exhibits change every two years — providing new opportunities to highlight the stories of the people and the plants they grow from across our region.

People
Each fall, Arboretum staff and volunteers, alongside volunteers from corporate groups, harvest thousands of pumpkins for the Arboretum’s fall displays and Apple House.
While plants are our passion, people are at the heart of the Arboretum. The Arboretum’s thriving community of members, volunteers, trustees, donors and staff allows the Arboretum to flourish and supports the Arboretum’s gardens and collections, horticultural research, education programming and so much more.
Each year, the Arboretum’s dedicated team of staff and volunteers works tirelessly to maintain the Arboretum’s gardens, conduct vital research, conserve precious natural resources, and inspire visitors at events and classes that showcase the wonder of nature.
Together, we accomplished so much in Fiscal Year 2024:
• We welcomed an astounding 683,794 visitors to the Arboretum to marvel at the beauty of nature across the 1,200-acre landscape.
• 34,992 member households supported the Arboretum’s vital work.
• 153 members of the Arboretum Auxiliary raised funds in support of the Arboretum through popular events and sales, including the Arboretum Glass Pumpkin Patch in the fall.
• 1,836 volunteers (including 728 corporate or group volunteers) contributed 42,409 hours of service dedicated to maintaining the Arboretum’s gardens
and natural areas, teaching visiting field trip students and assisting staff at classes and events.
• In the peak summer months, 327 staff members, including 154.5 FTE (full-time equivalent) staff, welcomed visitors; maintained the Arboretum’s gardens, grounds and natural areas; facilitated research trials at the Horticultural Research Center and more!
• Three new directors joined the Arboretum’s existing leadership team, including David Senior, Director of Business & Finance; Rachelle Crosby, Director of Facilities & Project Management; and Jared Rubinstein, Director of Horticulture & Collections.
“I love working with the Plant Conservation group at the HRC. I’ve worked with David Remucal since 2014, and feel like I’m contributing to ground-breaking research on native orchid propagation, as well as occasional forays into native plant rescues. It’s just a terrific feeling of contribution in an important field.”
