MATHEMATICS LEARNING FOR ALL STUDENTS

Mathworks at Texas State University is a center for innovation in mathematics education. Our mission is to research and develop model programs and self-sustaining learning communities that engage students from all backgrounds in doing mathematics at a high level.

THREE PILLARS OF MATHWORKS
The three pillars of Mathworks are research and development of curriculum, summer math camps for middle and high school students, and teacher professional development. These three pillars provide a foundation for all the Mathworks programs and a setting for conducting exciting research about the teaching and learning of mathematics. Research supports each of the pillars, connecting theory to practice in the summer math camps.
CURRICULUM
Mathworks has distributed 14,000 copies of a series of three middle school math textbooks called Math Explorations. Fully aligned to the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS), the curriculum prepares all students for success in algebra and higherlevel mathematics.
SUMMER CAMPS
Camp enrollment of 7,910 included teachers, counselors, and student participants. Camps for middle school and high school students develop creative thinkers and problem solvers. A Math Camp-in-a-Box offers school districts and teachers the option to host their own math camps.
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Mathworks has trained 750 teachers in innovative researchbased math education practices. Professional development associated with the middle school math camp teaches pre-service and in-service teachers researchbased mathematics content and pedagogy, along with hands-on activities.

HOW YOU CAN HELP
Our goal is to grow the Mathworks endowment to $6 million to provide a sustainable source of funding for faculty and graduate students to advance innovation and teacher effectiveness in math education.
SUGGESTED GIFT OPPORTUNITIES:
$500,000: Support 20 undergraduate Mathworks Fellows as part of the Mathworks Junior Summer Math Camp, which provides undergraduates an early introduction to teaching.
$600,000: Fund an endowed Department of Mathematics professorship to ensure continued leadership and sustained excellence for the program.
$1,000,000: Support six graduate students to research new and innovative ideas in curriculum development, and in teaching and learning mathematics.
*To enhance the impact of your gift, Texas State will seek matching funds from the Texas Research Incentive Program (TRIP).

Because of HSMC, I am much more excited about math than I was before. This camp taught me perseverance in the face of difficult problems, a skill that is easily applicable to fields outside of math.”
