• Fund construction and renovation of campus facilities, like the new music building, to match the caliber of students and faculty we are recruiting.

• Strengthen our research capabilities and teaching support with increased Ph.D. graduates to be designated as a national research university.

• Elevate our football program and renovate the Football Performance Center to enhance our overall student-athlete experience to put us on par with our peers in the state of Texas and nationally.

• Projected population growth in Austin demands that we expand TXST Round Rock to provide affordable, high-quality, and convenient higher education access to tens of thousands of additional future students.

RUN TO R1 - Increase Ph.D. graduates & post-docs Teaching and research are two sides of the same academic coin. Texas State University is committed to applied research that matters, and research professors are not merely the disseminators of knowledge, but the creators of new knowledge. They incorporate their discoveries (and the process of discovery) into course materials, teaching students valuable critical thinking skills. Students who are immersed in rich research environments are better prepared for successful careers, they graduate on time, and they get jobs.

TXST has already surpassed one of the three key metrics required to achieve R1 – research expenditures. Research expenditures in FY2022 exceeded $110 million, which is comparable to other Carnegie R1 institutions in the country. However, making progress in the other two required metrics (increasing Ph.D. graduates and post-docs) requires immediate action to stay on target for 2027 and conform with graduation deadlines.

DOING MORE WITH MORE Doing more is essential to catapult TXST to the NEXT level in our teaching and research mission. Our Run to R1 achievement will not only increase our Ph.D. graduates and post-docs, but it will also: • Bring more resources to the university.

• Expand degree offerings.

• Attract high quality students.

• Increase the number of assistantships for students.

• Make our graduates more competitive in the job market.

• Attract high quality research faculty who will provide students with expanded opportunities to engage in research.

• Increase the value of a TXST degree.

Most of the improvements we strive to make require significant funding, achieving “more with more” requires us to have more revenue and resources, and NEXT IS NOW is designed to help inspire and secure the investments to bring that vision to life.

STUDENT SUCCESS -Retention, Graduation, Job Placement Unique challenges exist in the current academic landscape.

Members of TXST’s firstyear class have not had the traditional high school experience because of the pandemic. Continuing students experienced similar academic challenges and learning loss.

Students need support to meet the expectations of a rigorous academic environment.

For several years, our first-year retention rate has hovered around 77%. Through strategic investments and coordinated efforts across the university, that number jumped to 80% this fall. That is a tremendous achievement, yet TXST will not settle for allowing 20% of first-year students to not return for their sophomore year. TXST strives to provide conditions that support all Bobcats who are committed to their academic pursuits to ultimately walk across the graduation stage! Our faculty and staff must remain intentional across all student support programs and services to impact student success outcomes.

NEXT IS NOW CAMPAIGN IS ON TRACK Our campaign is on track raise $250 million to advance initiatives focused on ensuring student success and becoming a Tier1 research university.

Since 2014, the NEXTIS NOW campaign has generated $236.1 million contributed by 53,026 donors and increased Texas State’s endowment from $165 million to $359 million.
