The Best Research-based Critical Incident Response Training Center in the Nation
In Texas State University’s Run to R1 to achieve designation as a national research university, Texas State is proud to be the home for the nationally recognized Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training (ALERRT) Center utilizing research and training to improve public safety across Texas and the United States.
ALERRT is the gold standard for preparing law enforcement to respond to violent incidents. Best practices are shared by ALERRT with first responders nationwide, training them for many situations. In 2013, ALERRT’s Level I class was named the National Standard in Active Shooter Response Training by the FBI.
ALERRT was founded in 2002 as a partnership between the Hays County Sheriff’s Office, the San Marcos Police Department, and Texas State University. The original mission was to prepare officers regionally to respond to active shooter events. ALERRT received funding from the state to first do regional training and then throughout the state. Very quickly after that, the center received a federal grant to deliver the training nationwide. Since that time, ALERRT has taught first responders from 50 states and some US territories; reaching more than 250,000 first responders, mostly law enforcement, but also fire, EMS, and dispatchers.

Research-based Active Shooter Response Training
What sets ALERRT apart from other active shooter response training organizations is the research basis. ALERRT is the only center that’s engaged in research to not only evaluate the incidents but to learn from what happened to enhance overall understanding. Additionally, ALERRT conducts true experimental lab-type research. When there’s a question about if a technique might improve response, tests are conducted. If the technique is better, best practices are modified.
The training provided at the center, 20 minutes from the Texas State San Marcos campus, is not just for first responders. Dr. J. Pete Blair, Executive Director of the ALERRT Center, understands the need to integrate more and has established a public training opportunity. ALERRT has a civilian response to active shooter events program. It’s available for free online as a train-the-trainer module. ALERRT also has in-person training that’s designed to train first responders to go back and educate their communities.

While much of the training is delivered on-site in cities around the country, ALERRT also has training equipment and a multimillion-dollar training facility in San Marcos for advanced active shooter response training that requires operations and maintenance. Donated funds to the Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training (ALERRT) Center
Excellence Fund are needed and will be used to support programs, staff, maintenance, and operational needs at the center. Funds will be used at the discretion of the Executive Director in consultation with the Director of the School of Criminal Justice and Criminology.

NATIONAL INTEGRATED RESPONSE CONFERENCE
The ALERRT Active Shooter Integrated Response Conference hosted each fall is the only national conference bridging law enforcement, fire, and EMS responses to active shooter/ attack events. The conference has integrated response topics for first responders, emergency management community leaders, school administration, and hospital staff which creates stronger local, regional, state, and national active shooter response preparedness.
