The Man Behind the Vision
Fredi Nwaka, an award-winning writer, director, film producer, and actor, has a resume that reads like a testament to resilience and talent. From growing up in South London to creating two empowering award shows— The Power of a Man and The Power of a Woman—he has become an emblem of creative ambition. While the Power of a Woman Awards takes place in March, the Power of a Man Awards lights up November, both celebrating the strength and achievements of black men and women.
Originally from Brixton, Fredi’s story is deeply rooted in his complex upbringing. Fostered from the age of three months until 11 in a predominantly white town near Dover, he endured racial discrimination and abuse. Despite these hardships, his resilience carried him through. After leaving care at age 11, he returned to South London to live with his biological parents and found himself drawn into gang culture, losing 45 friends to violence in the process.
From Music To Movies
Fredi’s journey took him from gang life to becoming a sought-after bodyguard for celebrities, including Biggie Smalls, TLC, and Donell Jones. He also made history as the only British rapper signed by the Wu-Tang Clan’s label. Yet, his passions shifted over time, leading him toward filmmaking. He has directed and produced 11 movies, the most recent being Jafaican, an entertaining comedy adventure filmed in Jamaica and London, with Peter Andre, Oliver Samuels, Wil Johnson and Sizzla Kalonji. The film premiered at Odeon Cinemas in the UK and Australia, delighting audiences with its vibrant twists, cultural depth, and heartfelt humour. As one reviewer described, “Jafaican brings London to Yard… laughter, culture, and a whole heap of vibes.”
Fredi’s next upcoming film stars Cynthia Bailey in a distinguished Christmas production.
