Podcast Series

The Story of Woman podcast announces a groundbreaking three-part series shedding light on female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) in Kenya. Available starting May 21, this series explores the cultural, social, and human dimensions of FGM/C through the voices of survivors, activists, and community leaders. Created in collaboration with Kenyan journalist Evelyn Wambui and international NGO Orchid Project, it aims to highlight the resilience of women leading the fight against this human rights violation affecting 230 million women worldwide.

“This is a story about the strength and untapped potential of women,” says host Anna Stoecklein. “It’s about creating better lives for communities by challenging deeply-held norms.”

EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS

EPISODE 1: “The Untapped Potential of Women” introduces survivors like Anne, a Maasai elder advocating against FGM/C, and Fariha, a Somali salon owner empowering women.

EPISODE 2: “Breaking the Cycle” examines cultural and religious forces sustaining FGM/C, featuring Pauline, a former cutter turned advocate, and Osman, a religious leader clarifying its lack of Islamic basis.

EPISODE 3: “The Path Forward” explores shifting social norms, with examples like Saitoti, a Maasai composer using music to inspire change.

Collaborative Efforts

Produced in partnership with Orchid Project, with support from their partner organisations COVAW, and Brighter Society Initiative, the series connects grassroots activism with research-driven insights.
