CHOOSE A MONOLOGUE to PERFORM (IT MUST BE MEMORIZED) BOYS THE OUTSIDERS: Johnny Cade Ponyboy, I asked the nurse to give you this book so you could finish it. The doctor came in a while ago but I already knew it anyway. I keep getting tireder and tireder. Listen, I don’t mind dying now. It was worth it. It was worth saving those kids. Their lives are worth more than mine, they have more to live for. Some of the parents came by to thank me and I know it was worth it. Tell Dally it was worth it. I’m just gonna miss you guys. I’ve been thinking about it, and that poem , that guy that wrote it , he meant you are gold when you’re a kid, like green. When you’re a kid everything is new , dawn. It’s just. When just when you get used to everything it’s day. Like the way you dig sunsets, Pony. That’s Gold. Keep it that way, it’s a good way to be. I want you to tell Dally to look at one. He’ll probably think you’re crazy , but ask for me. I don’t think he’s ever really seen a sunset. And don’t be bugged over being a greaser. You still have a lot of time to make yourself be what you want. There’s still a lot of good in the world. Tell Dally. I don’t think he knows. Your Buddy, Johnny Jeff from Homeroom – The Musical : "Home" and "Room" are four letter words. Put them together and the results are unpredictable. I guess years from now, I'll see my life with the "V's" as a phase. I may forget the names, but I don't think I'll forget the people. School doesn't fool us. Calling a room a home doesn't make it one. Homes have to be built. Homeroom is really the people and their relationships being part of groups; some you choose and some are chosen for you. . .like the "V's." Making the best of it that's the key. Learning to be comfortable with all kinds of people to be at home with them to see them as human beings like yourself. If everyone could see people, the way I'm beginning to see the kids in my homeroom, the world would be my kind of place. GIRLS Christine from Homeroom – The Musical : This is it. I've made my decision. I’m quitting cheerleading. I can't do the routines and it's gotten to the point where my uniform is falling off me. People keep bugging me...telling me….I'm too thin. . .but I see myself as FAT. "Thin is in" Right? When I look in the mirror I see someone totally different than what everyone else sees. Let's face it. No one really likes me. They just put up with me because they're afraid of me. I don't have the strength to keep going anymore. It feels like I'm caught in a trap. Is there still time for me to get out of it? Alex from Homeroom – The Musical : You know the paper due in Ms. Harmon's class? The one on Einstein's Theory of Relatives? I formulated my own theory as to the essential relationship between kids and their parents. Parents emit a frequency of highly charged electrical currents. Our minds and bodies . . .are ZAPPED. Every move we make is wired to an invisible leash attached to our parents. It's like those leashes little kids are tied to when their moms are shopping. There's the quiet hold, (demonstrates) but at any given moment, there could be a surprising yank. (demonstrates) Or a series of tight, little tugs. (demonstrates) There's the slow drag (demonstrates) . . . .as we go along kicking and screaming. Worst of all, is the strangle hold (demonstrates) the one you avoid at all costs. We would never admit it. . .but we crave our parents' approval.
