Despite 2020 being a topsy-turvy year with the pandemic enforced shutdowns and students having to learn differently, Jaiden Roadfeldt (pictured with Pincipal Dan Petersen) was awarded the Mount Morgan State High School’s Dux and Tomky’s Memorial Prize and Gladstone Ports Corporation Bursary. Jaiden also achieved Academic Awards for Economics, Physical Education, Legal Studies and Tourism and a Merit Award for General English. Jaiden also won the CQU Top Business Student award and the Year 12 ADF Future Innovators award.

The Year 12 awards were presented in Rockhampton simultaneously to the Year 12 formal.

DUST, THRILLS AND SPILLS AT LOCAL RODEO

A warm and cloudy spring day, record crowd numbers and record nominations contributed to making Mount Morgan Rodeo Association’s Rodeo [MMRAI] held on 7 November at the Mount Morgan Show Grounds a success.

The quality of the “bucking” stock ensured that entertainment, thrills and spills was high on the program.

MMRAI President, Barbara Gould said she was overwhelmed with the success of the day. “The NRA were wonderful as was St Brendan’s College who provided assistance as well as competing,” she said.

“It was a wonderful day,” she said.

Assessment process underway Australian-owned renewable energy developer Epuron is preparing to lodge a development application with the Queensland Government for the proposed Boulder Creek Wind Farm, located between Westwood and Mount Morgan in central Queensland.

The onsite technical studies prescribed by the State Assessment and Referral Agency (SARA) are nearing completion, and Epuron has established Cultural Heritage Management Agreements (CHMA) for the site with the Gaangalu Nation People and the Darumbal People.

The Federal Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment (DAWE) has also provided guidance for environmental assessment requirements under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act) (see left).

Commonwealth guidance The Commonwealth Government has determined the Boulder Creek Wind Farm project to be a ‘controlled action’ under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act). This means the project must be assessed and approved under the EPBC Act. RRC MAY BE HEADING TO POLLS Rockhampton Regional Council residents may soon be going back to the polls to elect a Mayor, following the resignation of mayor, Margaret Strelow last Monday and depending on whether the Queensland Government can change current laws and make them retrospective.

Councillors have paid tribute to former mayor Margaret Strelow who resigned from the position late yesterday afternoon. Acting Mayor Neil Fisher said the announcement had come as a shock.

“Her years of experience at the table puts us in good stead and Councillors are committed to continue working together as a strong team,” Acting Mayor Fisher said.

“There are a lot of people in the community and in Council who have been taken aback by her announcement and I want to say to them that we understand that feeling,” Acting Mayor Fisher said.

CEO Evan Pardon said Council business would continue as normal while the process for electing a new Mayor was worked through.

“Margaret was a fierce advocate for the region, and I’d like to pay tribute to her tireless work and dedication during her stewardship of our community.

“Margaret was many things to Councillors during her tenure as Mayor. She was a mentor to us when making tough decisions and a calm voice of reason

“There was a side to Margaret where you could see how deeply she cared not just about the region but the people in it. It was not something you’d see in the media, but she did.

“We welcome the clarity provided by Local Government Minister Stirling Hinchliffe today as we move through the process to fill the Office of the Mayor. In the interim, we will continue with the day to day business and will provide more information when it’s available. This is obviously a new situation so it will take time to work through the next steps, but we will keep the community updated as we go along.”

In 2021 our No7 Art Squad will be up and running again, with some holiday activities, and then with first term Friday afternoon workshops. We have some exciting news to come from GOMA, the Gallery of Modern Art in Brisbane and a collaborative project.

What a blast was had at the Retro Explosion Exhibition Opening! On Friday, 6 November, at 5 pm people gathered to enter and check out the new art on display.

There was a great response to the retro inspired works, and the general vibe was of lighthearted fun. Guests took away a snack pack, filled with old fashioned nibbles and treats, to bring about nostalgia through taste and the familiarity of childhood favorites.

On the night three classic cars parked outside adding to the atmosphere, with background music from some 50’s vinyl records. There really is nothing like the crackle and static noise of the old record players.

REMEMBRANCE DAY MARKED AT SERVICE A small gathering of townspeople were in attendance at the 2020 Remembrance Day Service held at ANZAC Park on Wednesday, 11 November.

The service was organised by the Rotary Club of Mount Morgan. Vietnam Veteran Mike Johnston (below) was the emcee and fellow vet Brian Lynch (above) read the Ode. Wreaths were laid by Mount Morgan QAS, Rotary, Mount Morgan Central State and High Schools and residents.

On Saturday, a dozen classic cars lined the street, creating a visual feast for many avid car lovers. A massive thank you to the All Classic Motor Club Central Queensland for making the trip up for the day, and a big shout-out to our amazing Volunteers and Artists, and to all who attended. HISTORICAL MUSEUM NEWS In 1902, development work on the then lower levels of the Mount Morgan mine disclosed the existence of a high-grade copper sulphide ore.

BUMPER CHRISTMAS RAFFLE Mount Morgan Historical Museum is giving raffle buyers an opportunity to win at least one of six bumper raffle prizes as it kicks up its fundraising leading into the Festive season.

The winners will receive a basket of goodies and a gift box which has a range of different gifts suitable for the entire family.

Just one of the six prizes is pictured below. This is the second year that the Museum is raffling the six prizes. Last year they increased the number of prizes on offer from three to six.

The chimney was erected in 1905 to discharge the corrosive fumes from the copper smelting plant.

This chimney became known locally as the “Big Stack”.

Still dominating Mount Morgan township and the mine site, The Stack is ablaze with light on most Public Holidays.

The stack contained 749,500 bricks which were made in Mount Morgan and had a total weight of 4,480 tons.

Smelting ceased in July 1984, so the Big Stack has not “smoked” since that date Throughout the years, heat, hot corrosive gases, and the elements had weakened the Big Stack and a restoration programme took place in 1991, to preserve the stack. Unfortunately, 6.9m had to be removed from the top of the

As the weather warms up, some of us are beginning to feel the heat.

As yet, we haven’t seen any heat related illnesses and we would like to keep it that way.

Ideally, it would be good to keep any outdoor activity to earlier in the morning or late afternoon when the heat is not so intense.

Of course, real life doesn’t always work that way, so if you need to venture out in the middle part of the day, please wear loose fitting clothing with lighter fabrics, such as cotton, that give good coverage but still allow sweat to evaporate.

Don’t forget a hat and sunscreen, and keep a water bottle or other water source nearby to enable you to maintain your fluid levels.

Do set a reminder or an alarm on your phone for each hour to remind you drink water if you are someone who regularly forgets to do so.

Drink a glass of water even if you don’t feel like it.

Avoid alcohol and caffeine as these help to drain fluid from your system.

If you must indulge, drink extra water to compensate.

On the food side, try to eat more salads and fruits to keep you cool on the inside as these will help to hydrate you and keep you feeling full.

Former Police Chief Ingimunder has stepped down and stood aside as he struggles with the loss of his beloved wife in a tragic accident two years ago. He busies himself with renovating a homestead in the remote Icelandic wilderness, finding solace in time spent with his spirited young granddaughter Salka. He still calls into the station to see how things are going with his friends and co-workers in uniform, as well as to keep his fingers on the pulse of his community where life is generally calm, peaceful and crime-free.

But then Ingimunder begins to suspect that a local man, a soccer team-mate, may have had an adulterous affair with his late wife in the time leading up to her death.

He turns his vengeful sights on his neighbour. He stews on it. His emotions begin to simmer. His blood begins to boil.

DEE RIVER OLDIES Members enjoyed a morning catch-up at the Leichhardt Hotel in the outdoor beer garden recently. It was good to see members getting out and enjoying a cuppa and a chat. After some days of rain and storms the weather was good. We had a guest speaker from the ambulance centre who gave members an insight of what happens when you have to dial 000. We would like to thank the owners of the Leichhardt Hotel and the members for an enjoyable day.

Getting members out and about has been extremely difficult this year. Now with the easing of these restrictions, we are looking at having a Christmas Lunch on Friday, 27 November 2020 at the Grand Hotel. Come along at 11.30 am and enjoy your Christmas lunch. $15 has to be paid when you put your name down. That will be $10 for your lunch and $5 for raffle tickets.

Pride in Your Town

Just reflecting on a bit of interesting history, that many may not have read in 2011. Most folk know of the three Morgan brothers who played such a significant role in the development of our Gold Mine, but little was known of their Father, Frederick Morgan Senior who had an interesting life.

Frederick Senior was born in London in 1807, but at the age of seventeen years he stole a cloth from a tailor’s shop and after being tried for stealing at London’s Old Bailey, he was sentenced to death with a recommendation for mercy. The sentence was changed to life imprisonment with transportation to Australia.

He departed Portsmouth on 24 August,1825 and arrived in Sydney on 3 January,1826.

On arrival he was assigned to a tailor, David Smith, where he worked for twelve years until authorities removed him in 1838.

He was given a ticket to leave Sydney and remain in Bathurst. In Bathurst in 1838 he first set up a tailoring business until 1850 when he became a publican, receiving the license of the “Spread Eagle Inn” on 25 April,1856. In August of 1846, the Queen issued him with a “Conditional Pardon” the condition being he was never to return to England.

In 1836 he met Emma Woodward, a free immigrant who with her Mother and two brothers had arrived in Sydney in 1827. A friendship was developed and

Frederick Augustus, their first son was born on 2 June,1837.

The couple married in 1851 four months prior to the birth of their 8th child. They eventually had sixteen children.

I’ve been in Flexible, but only when it was very important to stand firm.

1n 1856 they left Bathurst and went to Tenterfield where he again became a publican receiving the license of the “George Inn”. By February 1859 Frederick and Emma had left Tenterfield and returned to Sydney. Frederick Morgan Snr died of bronchitis on the 25 May, 1886 at 79 years of age in the home of his son Thomas Squire, and was buried in the Devonshire Street Cemetery, Randwick. Before being reinterred with his wife, Emma, at Rockwood, Sydney. Quite a life!

One of my favorite places to be in is Suspense. It really gets the adrenaline flowing and pumps up the old heart rate. At my age I need all the stimuli I can get.

I have been in many places, but I’ve never been in Kahoots.

Apparently you can’t go alone.

You have to be in Kahoots with someone.

Sometimes I’m in Capable, and I go there more often as I’m getting older.

I may have been in Continent, but I don’t remember what country I was in. It’s an age thing. They tell me it is very wet and damp there.

So much for a crazy 2021 travel plan.

Now for some words of Wisdom.

Believe there is good in the world.

The world is changed by your example, not by your opinion.

I’ve also never been in Cognito. I hear no one recognizes you there.

Sometimes not getting your own way is a stroke of good luck.

I have, however, been in Sane.

They don’t have an airport; you have to be driven there. I have made several trips there, thanks to my friends and family. I would like to go to Conclusions, but you have to jump, and I’m not much into physical activity any more.

Never discourage anyone who continually makes progress, no matter how slowly.

I have also been in Doubt. That is a sad place to go, and I try not to go there too often.

If you want happiness for an hour, take a nap. If you want happiness for a day, go fishing. If you want happiness for a year, inherit a fortune. If you want happiness for a lifetime, help somebody.

Think clean…..Be Tidy.
