The No. 7 Dam in Mount Morgan is set to become an even more vibrant hub for recreational fishing and environmental education thanks to a significant habitat improvement project spearheaded by Mount Morgan Promotion and Development Inc (MMPAD). This multi-faceted initiative, with support from various funding bodies and community partners, aims to restore a thriving ecosystem and boost local engagement.
MMPAD has a long-standing commitment to the No. 7 Dam, consistently restocking it with Golden Perch (often referred to as Golden Bream) since 2008, with a pause only during the severe dry period from 2019 to 2023. The dam's capacity dropped to a critical seven percent during these years due to low rainfall and its use for town water supply, halting restocking efforts. However, with improved conditions, MMPAD released new fingerlings in March 2024, marking the first restocking since 2018. In the near future, MMPAD will reach out to the community to determines ways in which to monitor the success of restocking.
These new projects, funded by a State Government Department of Primary Industries Community Fishing Grant and the Boulder Creek Wind Farm Community Benefit Fund, will focus on comprehensive habitat and erosion control improvements.
Key elements of the Habit Improvement project include:
• Planting native grasses (Lomandra hystrix) and native trees (Melaleuca species).
• Extending existing fingerling reefs.
• Creating artificial breeding areas for fish.
• Introducing water snowflake plants to the dam.
The Erosion Control Environment Project (funded by BCWF CBF) will focus on planting of native grasses and trees and maintaining these to ensure survival of plantings.
These vital works will be carried out in close collaboration with Capricorn Catchments and Mount Morgan State High School students.
MMPAD President, Mr. John Steinberger, expressed his enthusiasm for the project.
"We are really happy that the project is underway. These fish habitat improvements and erosion control measures will lead to a reestablishment of a true recreational fishing experience at No. 7 Dam for the community and visitors,” he said.
“Increased visitation will assist with economic growth for businesses, and the management of erosion control will ensure the location remains environmentally stable for the future."
Mr Steinberger said MMPAD utilised the Golden Mount Nursery to source the native grass and native tree seedlings.
“MMPAD is happy that it can work with the Golden Mount Nursery on the delivery of this project,” he said.
“It’s also great to see Capricorn Catchments and the Mount Morgan State High School come on board.
If you are interested in assisting with watering the seedlings at the No. 7 Dam, please call MMPAD on 4938 2312.

Mount Morgan Central State School Launches "Step into Prep"
Starting school is a big step for any child, and it can be a significant change for the whole family.
To help make this important transition a smooth and positive experience, Mount Morgan Central State School is excited to announce the launch of its "Step into Prep" program. This free, term-based program is specifically designed to prepare children and parents for the start of formal schooling.
"Step into Prep" is not a traditional preschool. It's a playgroup-style program where parents stay, play, and learn with their child, providing a fun and familiar way to introduce them to the school environment. The program focuses on building a child's social and emotional skills through age and developmentally appropriate games and routines.
As Mrs. Michelle Emery, Mount Morgan Central State School Principal, explains,
"We believe that a strong start to school is built on confidence and familiarity. 'Step into Prep' helps children build a 'skills bank' of social and emotional tools they'll need for school. It’s also about making them feel comfortable and happy in their new environment."
“By participating, children get to experience the school firsthand, building relationships with teachers and administrative staff in a friendly setting. This helps to alleviate any anxieties and makes the first day of Prep feel like a natural next step, rather than a leap into the unknown,” she said.
The program is designed to support the entire family, not just the child. Parents will have the opportunity to learn about the school and gain a better understanding of what
it means to be "school ready."
They'll receive practical advice on how to foster their child's development and will spend uninterrupted, quality time playing with their child.
"It's a wonderful opportunity for parents to connect with each other and form a support network," Mrs. Emery said.
"They can share their experiences and make friendships with other families whose children will also be starting Prep. This sense of community is incredibly valuable for a successful transition," she said.
In addition to these benefits, participating families also receive:
• Complimentary membership to Play Matters.
• Free playgroup sessions for their child over Terms 3 and 4.
• Access to a wide range of age and developmentally appropriate resources.
• A school credit to the value of $50, with eligibility and attendance criteria applying.
The "Step into Prep" program began on Friday, 1 August, and will run from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Families with a child starting Prep next year are encouraged to join this fantastic program and lay the groundwork for a positive and successful start to their child's educational journey.
If you didn’t make the first day, contact the Mount Morgan Central State School on 4912 5333 to sign up to this program.

I recently attended the opening of the 48th Parliament in Canberra.
This has gave me some time to reflect on why I entered politics and the background that has shaped me into the person I am today.
The electorate of Flynn is over 132,000 square kilometres and is almost twice the size of Tasmania.
It stretches from the Central Highlands to the West, Gracemere to the North, Gladstone to the East and Wondai to the South while taking in the towns in between.
I grew up in regional Queensland and worked my way around the state in many industries including the Flynn electorate after leaving school. I was a ringer, a timber cutter, a plant operator and earthmoving contractor.
I’m a qualified boilermaker and spent a few years on the gas pipelines as a high-pressure pipe welder, including working on the QGC pipeline to Curtis Island.
When I’m not at work for Flynn, you’ll find me bushwalking around Central Queensland. I relax
while exploring the ranges and gorges and looking for Aboriginal rock art.
My wife Terri and I have three adult children and five grandchildren. Terri is the Deputy Mayor of the Banana Shire Council and while busy with her own endeavours including establishing a regional childcare centre, supports me in Canberra and Flynn whenever she is able.
We also have a family cattle and farming enterprise that she runs capably, given that I am in Canberra for 20 weeks each year.
I put my hand up for politics as I believe rural and regional Australia needs strong representation.
As a proud husband, father and grandfather, I want my children, grandchildren and the next generation to have a prosperous future in the regions.
I’ve represented the people of Flynn since 2022, and I believe there’s plenty more to do. I’m a hard worker and am keen to keep raising the issues that affect our lives in Flynn. I want to continue to take Flynn forward.
Whether you live in Mount Morgan or Moores Park Beach, Gracemere or Gladstone, Emerald or Eidsvold or one of the communities in between, as the Federal Member I will continue to go into bat for the Flynn electorate every single day of the year.

SOLDIERS ROOMS
Thanks to all who braved the cold for our Men and Women in Uniform Dance on 26 July. It was great to see so many in costume, and though attendance was down as expected during these winter months, everyone attested to having a great time! With a wonderful rendition of Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy and other wartime classics, the joint was jumping and the dancers swinging.
We will be having a break during August, with our next dance a Black-tie event to celebrate the hall’s birthday, pipeline fruition and mine activity on 20 September, so get out your penguin suits and gowns, this will be a lavish event!
Don’t forget in the meantime, to get your karaoke fix each month, with Amy’s Limelight Karaoke on the Saturday at 7pm, 9 August, 6 September, 1 November and 13 December. Remember the Soldiers Rooms can be hired for functions, and with the end of year approaching availability will rapidly diminish, so please call our Booking Officer Angela on 0419 605 662 to secure your dates.
ARTS PRECINCT
We would like to highlight the wonderful folk who have become integral to the Community Garden, which is part of the Arts Precinct and is situated at the rear of the Art Gallery. These green thumbed folk run a weekly produce swap where they bring excess fruit, vegies, seeds, plants and cuttings to trade and give away, and swap a wealth of horticultural information with a leaning towards permaculture. Open to newcomers, all are welcome. Any leftovers can be found in the gallery “Take One” basket.
The gallery has some new acquisitions to view, with some generously donated works painted by Kate Moore who used to own the QN Hotel some time ago and now has a long running association with Dayboro Art Gallery. Come in and check out the wide variety of creations for display and for sale, and for Artist and Volunteer Enquiries please call 0411 865 621.
Free Bowel Cancer Test Kits Available
The Rotary Club of Mount Morgan has on offer a number of free test kits (including analysis by Sullivan Nicolaides). These kits will be available from their stall at the Mount Morgan Show and Wattle Festival.
What is bowel cancer?
Bowel cancer is a disease of the large bowel (colon) that usually develops from small growths inside the colon, known as polyps. Not all polyps are cancerous, however if detected early, they can be removed to significantly reduce the chance of bowel cancer developing. The prevalence of severity of bowel cancer is due to the fact that usually there are no symptoms during the early stages of the disease when polyps are small. With no obvious symptoms the cancer is given the chance to develop and spread to other vital organs including the liver, kidneys and lungs completely undetected. Australia has one of the highest rates of bowel cancer in the world. People aged 15-49 are rated #1 for incidence of bowel cancer; women All Ageas are number nine and overall we are number19. Mount Morgan has been identified as one of Queensland’s Bowel Cancer hotspots where excess (preventable) deaths are 10% or higher than the National average. 15,200 Australians are expected to test positive to bowel cancer in 2025, 5,000 Australians are expected to die. Annual testing could save 4.500 of those lives. One such life saved could be you, a family member or a friend. We need people to take action. Bowel cancer exists in all communities and touches every stage of life. Early detection is your best protection. Collect a free kit from Mount Morgan Rotary.

Hill Sprint Record tumbles
The 2025 CQ Crane Hire Goldrush Hill Sprint has concluded, leaving behind a new track record, thrilling performances, and a strengthened bond between the event and the community of Mount Morgan. The annual motorsport event once again proved to be a highlight for both competitors and spectators, offering a perfect blend of high-speed action and local engagement.
The iconic Goldrush Course, a demanding 3-kilometre stretch with 26 corners, pushed drivers and their vehicles to the absolute limit. This year’s field was as diverse as ever, featuring two main categories: “Road Registered” and “Race.” This distinction brought a wide array of automobiles to the starting line, from meticulously engineered hill sprint machines to track cars, “rally monsters,” and even highend street-registered vehicles like a McLaren. A world time attack car also made its debut, adding another layer of excitement to the competition.
The star of the weekend was undoubtedly Daniel Day, who claimed the outright victory in his 2005 Subaru WRX STI. Day’s performance was nothing short of historic, as he shattered the previous track record with an incredible time of 1:40.34. This new benchmark was set on his very last run of the event, showcasing his determination and skill. The previous record of 1:41.82, set in 2024 by Dylan Cothill in a Nissan GTR R35 Skyline, was a testament to the high level of competition, but Day’s new time has set a new standard for future events.
The battle for the top spot was intense, with fierce competition from other talented drivers. Phillip Heafey, in his 2001 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution 6, and Blaise Paris, driving a 2019 Porsche 911 GT3, were neck-and-neck throughout the duration of the event. Their best times of 1:45.60 and 1:46.31, respectively, highlight the razor-thin margins that define a hill sprint and the incredible skill required to navigate the challenging course.
The Goldrush Hill Sprint is a celebration of all things automotive, and this year’s event featured a fascinating mix of classic and modern vehicles. The oldest vehicle to grace the course was a classic 1966 Ford Falcon XR, skillfully driven by Darren Hansen.
This vintage machine stood in stark contrast to the newest entries, which included a 2025 Toyota Yaris GR GTS driven by Ian Reid and a 2026 Ford Fiesta piloted by Peter Barnes, showcasing the evolution of automotive technology over the decades.
This year, there were a total of 116 entrants, with 107 successfully finishing the weekend. While this was a slight decrease from the anticipated 130 entrants, primarily due to last-minute mechanical issues and unexpected health matters, the event saw a record number of new competitors.
These new entrants, who had never competed at the Goldrush before, were drawn to the event after hearing “all the hype,” a clear sign of the event’s growing popularity and reputation within the motorsport community.
One of the most memorable aspects of the 2025 Goldrush Hill Sprint was the highly successful parade through the town of Mount Morgan. The parade, which saw almost all competitors drive their race cars through the streets, was met with an overwhelmingly positive response from both participants and the local community.
“The competitors absolutely loved the parade,” a spokesperson for the event stated. The opportunity to drive their race cars through town and see the township firsthand was irresistible,” a spokesperson said.
The community’s response was equally enthusiastic. “Locals lined the streets to witness the parade, with an impressive number of spectators attending the static display in Morgan Street,” the spokesperson added.
“There were lots of excited children running around seizing the opportunity to get up close to the competition vehicles, with many having the opportunity to sit in the vehicles and have their pictures taken.”
The parade was a new initiative for 2025, born from the desire to “bring the community of Mount Morgan into the event.”
Continued on Page 13
It was designed to showcase the competition vehicles to locals and to put the town on display for competitors who had traveled from across the nation.
Given its success, the parade will “certainly be a consideration for next year’s Goldrush,” cementing its place as a cherished part of the event.
Safety remains the highest priority for the Goldrush Hill Sprint, with all rules and regulations governed by Motorsport Australia.
The Central Queensland Motor Sporting Club, as a Motorsport Australia-affiliated club, ensures that all events adhere to strict safety guidelines. The regulations for the Goldrush are classified as a “Speed” type Hill Sprint, with all drivers briefed on the expectations before the competition begins.
The track setup is key to both driver and spectator safety, with a focus on ensuring spectators are kept a safe distance from the track and are protected by appropriate barriers.
Vehicles must also be equipped with essential safety equipment, such as a fire extinguisher and a clearly marked battery location, to minimize the risk of fire in the event of an emergency.
Furthermore, all drivers must wear mandatory safety apparel, including a helmet, long-sleeved cotton or fireresistant clothing, and closed-in shoes.
These safety items are checked at a pre-event scrutineering session and again at the event to ensure compliance. The presence of an EMT medical and Fire & Rescue team on standby throughout the event further reinforced the commitment to safety. Despite a few minor fender benders and mechanical breakdowns, the event ran smoothly, a testament to the thorough safety protocols in place. The 2025 CQ Crane Hire Goldrush Hill Sprint was a triumph, combining record-breaking speed with an unforgettable community experience. It has set a high bar for future events and has further solidified its reputation as a mustattend motorsport spectacle.

MIRANI MESSAGE
With Glen Kelly, MP
Mount Morgan is buzzing with activity lately, with event after event bringing the community together and attracting visitors to town.
A few weeks ago we had the CQ Motorsports Gold Rush Sprint event.
This was a fantastic event, with 118 entrants it was an action packed couple of days on the mountain. With the parade and community showcase on Friday afternoon coming into town, it allowed the town to check out some of the cars and meet some of the drivers that would be racing over the two days.
It was the first time that the event has done this and standing in front of the post office I watched along with excitement with many other locals looking at all the different sorts of cars that were coming through. This was the first time the event has done this and helped include the town in the event, and a great addition to the line up to bring some of the action to the top of the range.
Congratulations have to go to driver Daniel Day for breaking the course record with a time of 1:40.34, a huge achievement on a 3km course with 26 corners.
Not only did I get to see some car racing, I went up and visited the Golden Mount Gun Club for their AGM and have a shoot that same weekend.
A wonderful morning out there, chatting with the members and having a shot to see how I matched up against the regulars.
While I’m certainly not a sport shooter, I think I was able to hold my own against the regulars and certainly enjoyed my morning with the club.
Going forward we’ve got the Mount Morgan Show on 9 August, and it’s bound to be a fun packed day, with plenty to do for the kids with balloon twisting, face painting, a petting zoo, and the fireworks display amongst the classic show attractions and competitions it’ll be another day that brings in people to the historic mount.
Then a month on the town will be hosting its annual Mount Morgan Wattle Day Festival on September 6.
All these events add to the vibrant community here on the mount, and it’s a huge credit to the volunteers that help put these events together.
It’s no easy feat putting these events on, and takes a lot of time, and all of those helping to organise events for the town, thank you for all you do for the community, it adds life to the town, and helps show off the wonderful things that the Golden Mount has to offer.
Until next time, Glen.
FUTURE PATHWAYS PROGRAM
The Future Pathways Forum, supported by Rockhampton Regional Council’s Advance Rockhampton, celebrated significant strides in connecting Central Queensland students with local career opportunities at a breakfast on 16 July.
Evolving from the Capricornia Secondary Schools Industry Breakfast, the initiative launched in May 2024 to improve training and job pathways.
The keynote speaker, Simon Kuestenmacher (pictured below with Justene Webb) from the Demographics Group, provided data and analysis on Central Queensland future workforce requirements to around 150 education and business professionals.
Simon spoke about key trends happening within the region.
“Like any region outside of a two hour drive time radius from a major central business District, Central Queensland (CQ) must attract four things in order to grow the region’s economy.
These are local jobs, affordable and available housing, schooling and healthcare,” he said.
“The region faces an aging workforce with a large share of workers retiring within the next 10 years and will need to be replaced with younger workers.
“It is crucial right now to ensure that young locals, this very much includes students, have local careers offered to them.
According to Simon any business in CQ must have an honest look at their employment pipeline.
“This means you need to understand what share of your workers are likely to retire within the next 10 years or so. You must then take actions to ensure that you attract new talent now. Hiring school-based apprentices for example might be a good way of doing this,” he said.
“It must however be the goal of the region to offer enough affordable family sized housing for locals to return home after a couple of years away from the region. Housing remains a cornerstone issue in all regions across Australia,” he said.
Employment outcomes and achievements were celebrated at the Future Pathways Forum, supported by Rockhampton Regional Council’s lead economic development agency, Advance Rockhampton.
Previously known as the Capricornia Secondary Schools Industry Breakfast, the Future Pathways Forum acts as a conduit between Central Queensland high-schools, industry, business and Government agencies.
Established in 2024, the Future Pathways Working Group aims to improve training and jobs pathways between education and employers, to assist in the retention of local talent.
In the 12 months since its launch, the Future Pathways Working Group has:
• Grown to include 12 secondary school members across the public and private sectors from Rockhampton, Mount Morgan and Yeppoon
• Developed a business register to allowing schools to directly connect with employers
• Produced a series of promotional videos to highlight employment and career opportunities in growth industries
• Delivered the Student & Business Connect event to connect young people with business representatives
• Shared innovative solutions to connect student learning with local career opportunities.
Rockhampton Region Mayor Tony Williams said the Future Pathways Forum demonstrates the value of engaging with local students.
“With a diverse and growing economy comes a variety of training and career opportunities for schoolleavers which can be achieved right here in the Rockhampton Region,” Mayor Williams said.
“Council’s support of education and employment engagements has given Advance Rockhampton a platform to engage with almost 2,000 students already this year, showing them what can be achieved in our Region.
“We’ve also delivered the Live Rockhampton campaign to assist in workforce attraction and retention, and tomorrow night we’ll host a dedicated Workforce Attraction & Retention Workshop with the assistance of Business Chamber Queensland.
“Council and Advance Rockhampton are backing employers to build their workforce, and young people and job seekers to seize the opportunities available in our backyard.”
