Mount Morgan Central State School held it’s official awards presentation on Monday, 4 December 2023. A special presentation was made to the Year Six Students by the school and Division Five Councillor, Cherie Rutherford. The school’s Year Six students have the Christmas Holidays to prepare for their transition to High School. For many it will be a daunting prospect, while others will relish the opportunity to reach new levels of academic and sporting achievements.

As we approach the end of 2023, I would like to take this opportunity to reflect on the achievements and challenges of this year and to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. 2023 has been a year of major wins for our region and for the people of Mount Morgan on many levels, witnessing positive developments and successes. One of the major highlights of this year was the beginning of the Mount Morgan pipeline. As many of you know, the pipeline will provide a reliable and sustainable water supply for Mount Morgan, bringing about generational change. I want to acknowledge the support we have received from both the Palaszczuk and Albanese Governments, who are providing significant funding for the construction of the pipeline. Without their support, this project would not be a reality. I also want to acknowledge the hard yards the community has done over the last two years and thank you for your patience. I know that the level 6 water restrictions are not easy, but I want everyone to know that we are making progress and works will be ramping up over coming weeks as we move into full construction.
As we come to the end of the year, I would like to remind everyone to please be extra vigilant and drive safe over the Christmas break and New Year. It’s critical for motorists to be extra vigilant due to the high volume of people travelling over the holiday period.

CHRISTMAS MESSAGES FROM OUR EMERGENCY SERVICES
The Mount Morgan Emergency Service Agencies wish residents of and visitors to the area a happy and safe Holiday Season. To help people enjoy the season safely, they have the following messages. CALLIUNGAL RURAL SERVICE BRIGADE
FIRE
The Calliungal Rural Fire Service Brigade First Officer, Kevin Coughran wants to know if you are getting ready for the emergencies in the festive season? Summer is the traditional storm and fire season and while recent rains have reduced the risk of fire, all it takes is a spell of hot dry weather with strong winds to raise the fire risk. You need to plan what to do in an emergency and to reduce the hazards in and around your properties. Remember, in an emergency, you need a plan. You need to ask yourself - If you leave early: • Do you have a Bushfire or Storm Evacuation Kit with your family's important items and equipment needed to relocate which you can quickly and easily access and take with you at short notice? • Have you left your property wellprepared to withstand a bushfire? • Does everyone agree on the plan to leave early and know what to do? If you stay and defend: • Defending your home from a bushfire could be one of the most traumatic experiences of your life. • Do you have a Bushfire Emergency Kit to help you stay and defend your property? • Do you have well-maintained resources and equipment and do you know how to use them? • Have you prepared your property to withstand the impact of bushfire? Remember to prepare your property and family now, so everyone knows what actions to take to survive. He

residents to be fire safe over the holidays, especially when using candles, matches and lighters or lighting a barbecue or campfire.
"Never, under any circumstances, leave a fire unattended or leave children or pets unsupervised near an open fire," he said. "Campfires should only be lit in an open and safe area, contained in a fire pit and be less than one metre square in size and you should always extinguish a campfire with water and never with dirt or sand. "Before lighting up the barbecue for Christmas lunch remember to test your gas cylinders and barbecue hoses and valves. "It is also important to take the time to make sure that all electrical appliances that get a lot of use during summer like fans, air conditioners and Christmas lights are in good working condition and checked by a qualified electrician." If you need help and advice on preparing evacuation plans and kits, contact the Calliungal Rural Fire Service Brigade First Officer, Kevin Coughran on 0428 678 096. STATE EMERGENCY SERVICE Mount Morgan State Emergency Service would like to wish the Mount Morgan and surrounding communities a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Storm and cyclone season is upon us, so do not become complacent over the holiday season. Make sure your property is storm and cyclone ready. Clean gutters, check roofing is secure, trim trees and remove or secure anything in the yard that could become a missile. Most importantly make sure you have an emergency kit ready, including medication and cash. If travelling, stay safe on the roads. Follow the road rules, drive to the conditions, and take regular breaks. I’m sure your families would rather you be a little late then not get there at all. If you need assistance because of damage or flooding to your home from a storm MOUNT MORGAN ARGUS

Lastly, I must thank the Mount Morgan SES members for the time they have put in to attending training, activations, deployments, and maintenance days as without their dedication we would not have such a skilled group as we do to assist our community. Remembering John and Ivy Christmas is a time for remembering those who have made a difference on our lives. Two such people who made a difference were John and Ivy Hempseed. Sadly, both have died, but their legacy continues today. John and Ivy were instrumental in spearheading and working dilligently towards the revival of the Mount Morgan Show in 1999. The show celebrates 25 years in 2024. John served on Mount Morgan Shire Council in the 1990’s until 2004 and it was his idea to erect the Mount Morgan Miner’s Clock. Ivy and John organised the Centennary celebrations of the Mount Morgan Railway Station. Both John and Ivy served on the Heritage Trails Project. Both were members of the Golden Mount Festival Association for a short time, both were committed to their community. Ivy published a small reflective booklet on Mount Morgan. GOLF CLUB NEWS On Saturday, 2 and Sunday, 3 December, players braved oppressive heat and humidity to compete for the second annual “Conquer The Mountain” golf tournament at the Mount Morgan Golf Club. Recent rain had the course looking very green for the weekend and positive feedback was received about the condition of the fairways, tees and sand greens. This is due to the hard work put in by President, Doug and his helpers. Great work team. Special mention should be given to bar and kitchen workers who kept all players well hydrated and fed over the weekend.

COUNCIL CONNECTION WITH DIVISION 5 COUNCILLOR CHERIE RUTHERFORD As we stand at the threshold of a new chapter in Mount Morgan, it’s certainly a moment for reflection. Since it’s gold rush era, Mount Morgan has experienced its own cycles of highs and lows, but the community’s passion for and loyalty to the town is something that I have known to always remain a steadfast constant. To the dedicated volunteers, committee members and local businesses who contribute so much time and effort into the community - thank you so much for helping to build our ‘village’. I feel so fortunate to be included in much of the great work being undertaken throughout the community and have certainly enjoyed many of the Mounts wonderful events. It is always a privilege to be part of many of the special occasions here in Mount Morgan and I am honoured to be part of the Anzac Day service and share in the highlights of the students in both primary and high school throughout the year. Witnessing transformative and generational projects take shape within the community is also an immense privilege. To kick off 2024 we will see the commencement of the Pipeline with pipes being laid and the opening of the aquatic facility. These are two projects that will make an immeasurable difference to the Mount Morgan community’s quality of life and enjoyment and I am excited to see the benefits that will flow into the community as a result. After a prolonged and challenging period of living on water restrictions, and losing the Number 7 Dam as a recreational haven, each instance of rainfall brings renewed hope for The Dam’s future and a small amount of reprieve for the surroundings. The new chapter for Mount Morgan cannot come soon enough and once the pipeline is completed in 2025, the township will finally have its first, permanent water supply and hopefully a full Dam dedicated to recreational activities. I would like to thank all residents for your patience and perseverance during this time, please be assured that a new era for Mount Morgan has begun. I invite you to join Council at the Mount Morgan School of Arts on the 18 December as we host a Community Information session on the pipeline and provide an update on the sequencing of the project. At the end of year one of our five-year Soldiers Rooms/Arts Precinct plan, we have knocked it for a home run, and The Soldiers Rooms is virtually new again….or at least will be when the paintjob commences. What we have achieved through perseverance, drive and commitment is a credit to our Executive and Members, and we took the opportunity to thank them, as well as steadfast Volunteers and generous donors, with a Christmas Appreciation Morning Tea. Lots of Christmas fare and jovial conversations were had, with everyone set for a relaxing break, and excited for a great 2024 ahead. Many thanks also, to all in the Mount Morgan and surrounds community, who have supported and encouraged us with kind words, by hiring the hall, donating items, $$ and especially time….please be assured it is greatly appreciated and helps more than you know! DEE RIVER OLDIES We wish all our members and supporters, guest speakers and musicians a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year for 2024. As we roll into the new year, we look forward to welcoming our existing and new members back at our January Morning Tea on Wednesday, 17 January 2024. Favourite mains were roast and boiled turkey, stewed duck and boiled and braised goose (no mention of Mooloolaba king prawns, Moreton Bay bugs or Sydney rock oysters in those days). Potatoes were favourite accompaniments. A recipe for ‘Golden Mount Potatoes’ was published in a local newspaper at Christmas in 1894: ‘Add to two cups of cold mashed potatoes sufficient hot milk to make potatoes soft enough to roll into shape; pile on a buttered plate, and smooth with the blade of a knife into a pyramid; cover with the yolk of one egg; sift bread crumbs over the whole. Brown a light golden colour in a Page 18
‘Beat eight eggs and mix them with a pint of rich cream, half a pound of flour, and half a pound of bread-crumbs; beat them well together, and add one pound of beef suet chopped very fine, one pound of currants, one pound of raisins stoned and chopped very small, one pound of powdered sugar, two ounces of candied orange-peel, and the same of citron [a yellow citrus fruit with a thick rind]. Grate a nutmeg, and mix altogether well with half a pint of brandy and wine, put it in a cloth, and boil for six hours’. MM In Pictures from Page 18 Let’s not forget the festive drinks. Mount Morgan had its own ‘aerated water’ (soft drink) and cordial factory in the early 1900s called Harrups. Local favourites were hop beer, ginger ale and cordials, such as peppermint, sarsaparilla, lemon squash and clove. For those looking for something stronger, there were about thirty local pubs, including the Grand and Leichhardt Hotels – which are still trading. According to one correspondent, dinner, decorations and generosity epitomised a Mount Morgan Christmas in 1898: ‘It has been my lot to have spent Christmas Eve and Christmas Day in all parts of the civilised world, and of course one cannot help drawing comparisons, but as far as Australia is concerned, I must honestly say
that the Mount Morgan people entered thoroughly into the spirit of the holiday. The shops seemed to vie with one another in the matter of decorations, and one butcher's shop in particular, I noticed, gave more away than was sold. Anyone who happened to be a bit hard up received his or her Christmas dinner gratis, without stint, and with a Merry Christmas to you thrown in. The hospital patients were not forgotten either, for the wards were beautifully decorated. The convalescents were remembered too. The Resident Surgeon (Dr. Murray) was authorised by the [Hospital] Committee to use his discretion in catering for their wants, and right royally he carried out his Committee's wishes. There were several committee men present at the dinner’ (‘Christmas in Mount Morgan’, The Capricornian (Rockhampton, Qld. : 1875-1929, 31 December 1898).
