MOUNT RESIDENTS PAUSE TO HONOUR THE FALLEN

A small gathering of veterans and Mount Morgan Citizens gathered at ANZAC Park for the Remembrance Day Service organised by the Mount Morgan RSL Sub Branch. On the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month,

a minute’s silence is observed and dedicated to those who died fighting in the First World War. This conflict had mobilised over 70 million people and left between nine and 13 million dead. The first commemoration was held in

1919 and after World War Two the Australian Government agreed to the United Kingdom’s proposal to change the name from Armistice Day to Remembrance Day and the loss of Australian lives from all wars is commemorated.

Industry leaders engaged for Mount Morgan water business case Rockhampton Regional Council has announced global infrastructure firm AECOM has been appointed to deliver the Business Case for a long term water solution for Mount Morgan.

Mayor Tony Williams said AECOM and Council had wasted no time in getting down to work.

“Council officers and AECOM have already gotten stuck into this body of work and I’m pleased to say Councillors could be looking at the preliminary evaluation of the options before Christmas,” Mayor Williams said.

“What this process does is allow us to look at all the possible options so that we can select one to two options to take through to the business case stage and then, hopefully with funding support from other levels of government, through to detailed design.

“This body of work needs to be done now, so that when we come to other levels of Government seeking funding support, they are satisfied that what we are advocating for is the best option for a range of reasons.

“The reality is that any long term solution will require external funding and we’re hopeful we can see partnerships just like the Queensland Government has done at Stanthorpe with Southern Downs Regional Council.

“We’re hopeful to have the business case completed

by April next year but it is something we are absolutely talking to both levels of Government about now,” Mayor Williams said.

Water and Environmental Sustainability Councillor Donna Kirkland said this is an important milestone

and a step closer to a solution, is a step in the right direction.

“Our Mount Morgan community has shown great strength and resilience especially this past year and they have been doing their very best under tough level 6 restrictions,” Cr Kirkland said.

“We understand that it is frustrating not to have answers straight away - but we are making progress.

“Long term water security for the community is not possible without first delivering this business case – so we are asking the community to continue to be patient and trust in this process.”

Divisional Councillor Cherie Rutherford said awarding a contractor to work on the business case is the first in a series of milestones that will pave the way toward a solution.

“We are in this together with the Mount Morgan community and we will continue to keep the lines of communication open and provide updates as soon as they come to hand,” Cr Rutherford said.

“In the meantime, we need the community to keep water conservation in the front of mind, which I know is a challenge in the warmer months, but we really need to do our best to conserve that carted water supply.”

DEE RIVER OLDIES MMPAD NETWORKING NIGHT Members are looking forward to Christmas Lunch this Friday, 26 November 2021. It starts at 11 am at the Grand Hotel, Morgan Street, Mount Morgan.

Bookings have now closed. Members are looking forward to catching up and spreading some Christmas cheer.

Our last meeting for the year is on Tuesday, 14 December 2021 starting at 2 pm.

2021 has been another big year, but we have met the challenges head on and are looking forward to 2022. Our group is ever so thankful to the members for their support throughout the year. We have had some great morning teas and enjoyed the music and what the guest speakers had to say.

Our bus trips were always well supported. In March, we travelled to Moura. It had special memories to members who had links to Moura in the past. We visited the museum and looked over the mine from the lookout. Lunch was at the Bowls Club and they looked after us well.

In June, we visited the Rockhampton Markets at Callaghan Park, followed by lunch at the Lionleigh Hotel.

July saw our group travel to Ferns Hideaway, Byfield for our Christmas Lunch in July. It is always a good day and the food and music was great.

Mount Morgan Promotion and Development Inc [MMPAD] is holding a networking night for businesses and community organisation representatives on 30 November.

On the program for the evening are Advance Rockhampton, State and Federal Government departmental representatives as well as industry, youth and other representatives. In total there will be nine guest speakers interspersed with networking sessions for attendees to ask questions. Invitations were sent out over a month ago and if your business or organisation didn’t receive an invite, please contact Eve-lyn at the MMPAD Office on 4938 2312 to discuss your inclusion, which is by invitation only.

MMPAD President John Steinberger said MMPAD would like to thank all who have responded.

The networking night is just one of four activities that MMPAD is currently working towards. There is also the Buy Local Promotion, Christmas Lights Competition (nomination form included on Page 9) and the Twilight Christmas Concert which will be held at the Mount Morgan Railway Station. An insert has been included in this edition of the Mount Morgan Argus providing further information on the Buy Local Program and Twilight Christmas Concert.

With another new year just around the corner, we are planning to have our AGM on Wednesday, 19 January combined with our Morning Tea starting at 10 am. New and existing members welcomed. The cost is $5. Come along and put your ideas forward.

YEAR 12 GRADUATION

Twenty-two Mount Morgan State High Students were among 53,000 Queensland Year 12 Students who graduated from High School on Friday, 19 November Fourteen of the 22 students completed all their High Schooling (Year Seven to Year 12) at Mount Morgan State High.

Principal Dan Petersen congratulated the students on their graduation at a special ceremony on Friday highlighting the fact these students completed with the threat of the global pandemic hanging over their heads.

Division Five Councillor, Cherie Rutherford presented the students with their folios and gifts and highlighted the need for students to continue to work hard and if they should fall, keep getting back up as many times as it takes to succeed.

BEERSHEBA COMMEMORATED

A small continge of 5th Light Horse Regiment, Mount Morgan Troop representatives gathered to commemorate the 104th Beersheba cavalry charge on 30 October.

The charge of the 4th Australian Light Horse at Beersheba took place on 31 October 1917 and is remembered as the last “Great Cavalry Charges”.

POLIO SURVIVOR RECOUNTS HIS STORY

Glen contracted polio when he was about four years old in 1952 in the pre-polio vaccine days. Glen believes he contracted polio at the Fitzroy Street bridge opening. A couple of days later, he started developing a lack of coordinaton. When his parents took him to the hospital, they were told to “take him home and give him a good bath.”

The next day, he couldn’t walk and he ended up in the isolation unit at the Base Hospital where he stayed for six months.

“The doctors weren’t sure I was going to make it and my parents were told to have another child,” Glen said.

Glen considers that he was lucky.

“I was never in an iron lung, but I couldn’t move anything but my eyes.

The Rotary Club of Mount Morgan, like many Rotary Clubs around the world contribute to the eradication of polio.

In 1988, when Rotary International and its partners launched the Global Polio Eradication Initiative there were 350,000 cases of polio in 125 countries every year. Since the program started, the disease has been 99.9 percent eradicated with only two countries - Afghanistan and Pakistan still reporting polio cases.

With World Polio Day on 24 October, the Mount Morgan Club hosted Glen Chopping [pictured with Rotary President, Rosemary Izzard], a polio survivor.

“I was also lucky that Sister Elizabeth Kenny’s treatment of polio was an accepted practice by then,” he said.

Sister Kenny was a self-trained Australian bush nurse, who developed an approach to treating polio, which involved applying hot moist packs to affected muscles to relieve spasms and pain. This was combined with a regimen of exercises is provided to prevent deformities and to strengthen musles.

Following leaving hospital, Glen had to wear a brace and was subjected to a regimen of exercises for months as well as attend physio sessions three times a week. All of this was worth it for Glen, who was able to walk again.

MOUNT MORGAN SES -SEVERE STORM INFO As we have seen in last few weeks severe storms can affect our community, below is some information that will help you prepare for these events, there will also be some information on how to contact the SES to lodge a task.

Severe thunderstorms can produce large hail, damaging wind, lightening and heavy rainfall which can cause death, injury, and damage to property.

The Bureau of Meteorology issue severe thunderstorm and Weather Warnings for these phenomena. Pay close attention to weather forecasts and warnings at any time of the year but particularly during Storm Season – this information will assist you in daily preparations around your home. Radio news weather bulletins will usually provide the most information on current conditions and the latest warnings that have been issued, you may also receive alerts on your mobile phones if you have Weather Apps loaded onto your phone.

If weather conditions indicate the possibility of storms, make sure you’ve completed the following precautions:  Your Emergency Plan is up-to-date and all householders know what to do in case of a severe storm.  Your Emergency Kit is fully stocked.  Your insurance is up-to-date and covers damage to home and contents in case of severe storm.  Your yard and outdoor areas are free from loose items like patio furniture, garden tools and rubbish.

 You have trimmed any overhanging branches, clean gutters and ensure rooves and gutters are in good condition.  Move vehicles under shelter or cover with firmly tarpaulins and / or blankets.  Ensure Mobile phones, tablets and battery bank, torches etc are fully charged in case you lose power.

When you hear a severe storm warning:  Stay tuned into warnings.  Contact family and neighbours to make sure everyone is aware of the warning.  Shelter and secure animals.  Secure outdoor furniture and gardening items.  Park vehicles under shelter or cover with firmly tied tarpaulins and/or blankets.  Disconnect all electrical items, aerials, and computer modems.

During a severe storm:  Stay tuned into warnings via battery powered radio or mobile phones.  Activate your Emergency Plan.  Stay inside and shelter well clear of windows, doors, and skylights.  If the building starts to break up, shelter in the strongest part of the house (cellar, internal room, hallway, or built-in wardrobe) under a mattress or strong table or bench.  If outdoors, seek solid enclosed shelter.  If driving, stop clear of trees, powerlines, and streams.

Just under a month to go until we close our doors, and things are starting to get real! Although I am looking forward to a break for a bit, the familiarity of the space and the fondness for impromptu gatherings are just a couple of things that I will miss. I think the shock will set in the day I look across the road from my day-job, to see a blank space where the No7 Gallery sign used to be! I must say a big thankyou to all for the well wishes, and the consensus that the space will be missed….but there are plans in the works for bigger and better things to come, so keep tuned! In the meantime, Artists are welcome to collect their works in the final week before closing, however a secure space has been made available that I am able to store works in and my insurance will continue, so it is not an issue.

‘ Gold was all over the place’

‘… In 1886 a limited liability company [Mount Morgan Gold Mining Company Limited] was formed, with a capital of £1,000,000 in £1 shares, the total holding of the company being 730 acres, on part of which the town of Mt. Morgan stands.

There was little opening-up work to be done before the dividend-paying period in the life of the mine was entered on. Gold was all over the place. The mine was worked as an open-cut – a quarry of gold bearing stone. In 1886, five terraces were being operated on: 33ft. x 200ft., 18 x 275, 35 x 327, 33 x 380, and 15 x 486. The stone averaged 6oz. to the ton, and it was estimated that five men working in a cut could keep a battery going. A black stone gave returns of 6oz., a red sample 30oz., and there was a mottled stone of varied richness, never below 6oz.

The gold assayed 99.8 per cent. – the richest native gold ever found in the country.

When the surface yield of gold began to decline it was shown that the mine was about to develop into a copper proposition, and it became the greatest copper mine in the Commonwealth, as it had been the richest gold mine …’ (‘Romance of Mount Morgan’, Smith’s Weekly, NSW: 1919-1950), 16 April 1921).

Two of the best-known investors in the Mount Morgan Gold Mining Company Limited were Walter Hall and Knox D’Arcy (pictured). They would have seen gold ‘all over the place’ in the early days of the mine.

However, this misrepresents and is grossly unfair to the man to which this idiom refers, William Buckley. This six-foot-six wellproportioned giant served with the Duke of York in Holland fighting Napoleon, was wounded, discharged and later accused of theft while carrying a roll of cloth. Wiliam claimed innocence, saying a woman had asked him to carry it for her and he’d no idea that it was stolen. Convicted and sentenced to fourteen years transportation, William was sent to Australia (might as well have been Mars to an Englishman back then), arriving at Port Phillip Bay in Victoria at the age of just twenty-three in 1803. He and four others promptly escaped. One was shot and severely wounded and the other three either turned back or went north to find Sydney.

Buckley stuck it out alone in the bush.

Eventually he was befriended by local indigenous people who thought he was the spirit of a recently lost, very tall leader. He stayed with the tribe for thirty-two

years, had two wives, at least one daughter, witnessed many tribal wars, bloodfeuds, disputes; and was loved and revered by his adopted people. In 1835 he went back to the European settlements, received a pardon, moved to Tassie, remarried and lived happily for another twenty years when, at the age of seventysix he fell out of his gig for the last time. William Buckley was really one of the greatest survivors of all time.

This is why Buckley is the perfect name for both a dingo who survives a tangle of wire, and a vast property in the middle of the Western Australian desert.

Our story begins with two New Yorkers headed for the totally alien landscape of a completely different and dangerous (especially for the uninitiated) world in outback Western Australia. A year after the death of his New York firefighter dad, fourteen-year-old Ridley (Milan Burch) and his mum Gloria are moving to live with his estranged grandfather, Spencer on his sprawling desert station called BUCKLEY’S CHANCE. Once there, grandad Spencer (The Mr Cool, Bill Nighy), an Englishman who has been in Oz for a very long time, tries to

connect with his surly grandson, but with only limited success.

While on a camping trip Ridley frees a young dingo from a lethal tangle of wire, much to Grandad’s disdain. He names the wild dog Buckley. Ridley decides to go back home to the U.S. and without telling anyone he sets out on his own, on foot, deep into the outback... Of course, he is soon hopelessly lost - but not necessarily alone.

Given the excellent international cast with great Aussie talent tossed in, and the fact that the writer/ director Tim Brown is Canadian, this Canadian/Australian production provides a different and fascinating perspective on this wonderful country that we know and love so well.

BUCKLEY’S CHANCE is rated PG for “mild themes and coarse language”, it runs for an enthralling hour and a half and is highly recommended family viewing (especially Aussie families).
