On the Road

Students in 6th grade, 9th grade, and those taking AP Environmental Science visited Lacawac Nature Sanctuary on November 7 where they conducted water quality and biota studies on both the glacial lake and the nearby ponds. 6th grade conducted a water ecology study of the on-site pond, collecting and quantifying specimens. The 9th and 11th grade students conducted an advanced water quality study of the glacial lake, collecting samples at depth for oxygen and temperature profiles, performing titrations for nitrate and phosphate levels, analyzing turbidity, and assessing the local aquatic vegetation. The students sampled with various instruments including secchi disks, Van Dorn bottles, Dissolved Oxygen probes and field chemistry kits. After collecting data, they gathered for lunch and listened to a presentation about their findings, environmental changes, and the significance of the lake, conducted by the onsite science director, Dr. Beth Norman. The students were assisted by Mrs. Laurie Mele, Mr. Michael Mele and Mr. Justin Vincent.
