WINTER 2023

WINTER 2023
Mr. Calvin J. Herring, MMI Class of 1974, will serve as commencement speaker during MMI’s 131st annual Commencement Ceremony on Thursday, May 25. In the spring of 2021, Mr. Herring retired after 26 years of employment at the Keystone Job Corps Center. He currently serves as the parttime administrator for both the Greater Hazleton Area Civic Partnership and the Mountain Council of Governments. These two organizations have similar goals to provide improved quality of life to the residents of the area through recreation, education, and better government function.
Mr. Herring is a graduate of Penn State University with a Bachelor Degree in Business Administration, majoring in Accounting. Following his graduation from college, he worked as the Personnel Director for St. Joseph’s Hospital in Hazleton. Mr. Herring then spent four years as an Accountant for Cadbury USA in their Hazleton manufacturing plant before returning to St. Joseph’s Medical Center as the Director of Facilities through 1994.
In February of 1995, Mr. Herring began work at the Keystone Job Corps Center in Drums, PA where he served in numerous positions for the remainder of his full-time career. Keystone Job Corps’ mission is to teach eligible young people the skills they need to become employable
I am excited to share the happenings here at MMI since our last newsletter. I hope you are all doing well and enjoying a mild winter!
The basketball season got underway in the late fall and all of our teams and athletes played well. The games were well attended by faithful fans and the Prepper spirit was palpable!
In November, we recognized and honored our Founders, Sophia and Eckley Coxe, during a ceremony at St. James Episcopal Church where the senior class officers laid a wreath on their gravesites, continuing a long-standing MMI tradition. Immediately following the ceremony, the senior class visited and toured the homestead of the Coxe Family and learned about the history of the home, as well as the significant contributions to the community and philanthropy of the family. The tours were led by several MMI junior students along with representatives from the Coxe Foundation Board of Directors.
As part of the Founders Day celebration, MMI’s most recent alums were invited back to campus and enjoyed catching up with our faculty and senior class. The entire student body, faculty, and staff were treated to a fantastic Thanksgiving dinner before the holiday break by our Chef and her staff, followed by dessert sponsored by our Parents Association.
December began with our annual door decorating contest, a competition between Advisories. During midDecember we celebrated Holiday Theme Week and the students and faculty were invited to dress each day of the week in a specific theme. We had flannel day, wear red/green or blue/white day, ugly sweater day, and cozy day. The week ended with the viewing of the beautiful gingerbread houses, created during Club period by our students. Everyone really enjoyed the creativity and fun of the week!
Also in December, Mr. John Hersker ’76, Vice Chair of the MMI Board of Directors, was interviewed by me in an assembly style format for MMI’s FBLA students. The interview provided the students with insight into Mr. Hersker’s post-high school experience which ultimately led him on a path to a very successful business career. After the interview, Mr. Hersker answered questions from the audience and then spent time individually with the students to continue their discussion.
I am very much looking forward to the spring and all of the flurry it has to offer at MMI! Boys tennis, baseball, and softball will be launching this season, and I can’t wait to see everyone at these exciting events! Our students need our support!
On the upcoming calendar are Open House, the Prepper Playhouse Spring Musical, the Parents Association Springo Bingo, the Philadelphia Mini-Reunion for our alumni, the Spring Concert, Prom, and Graduation. It’s hard to believe they are not far away now! We will be moving quickly in our planning for all of these great events.
I remain enthusiastic and steadfast as the MMI Head of School. I have enjoyed getting to know our students, faculty, staff, alumni, friends, and community members during my first year as Head of School! It is truly an honor. I invite you all to stop by the school for a visit. We are doing great things in Freeland, and our door is always open!
Best,
and independent and place them in meaningful jobs or further education. Job Corps is the Nation’s largest free education and job training program for young adults, and Keystone is among the nation’s oldest Job Corps Centers having opened its doors in 1967.
At the time of his retirement, after 26 years at Job Corps, Mr. Herring was the Business Community Liaison. In this position, he was responsible for information distribution to federal, state, and local agencies related to the Job Corps mission. In addition, he coordinated the relationship with community organizations and Keystone. He organized meetings, public functions, and community event participation for both students and staff of the facility. His job titles in his earlier career at Keystone included: Work-Based Learning Coordinator (Internship and Apprenticeship Program), Career Technical Training Instructor, Occupational Exploration Program Coordinator (Vocation Counselor), and Advanced Career Training Coordinator (College Counselor).
“Throughout his career in Job Corps, Cal’s passion for helping young people discover their potential was always front and center. He was quick to engage and empower his students, much like he did as a manager at St Joe’s,” stated Kelly King, Center Director.
While Mr. Herring had a successful career in our area, his dedication to his community and his immeasurable service is what sets this MMI alum apart. During his time at MMI, Mr. Herring served as the President of the Interact Club, the School’s service organization. While he was at the helm of that Club, the members sponsored four dances at MMI, sponsored a Brazilian foster child, provided holiday gifts to patients at the White Haven State School and Hospital, served as ushers at school events, and improved the appearance of the school grounds. He was the manager of the Prepper boys’ basketball team for three seasons and was inducted in 2006 to the MMI Wall of Fame in Athletic Achievement as part of the legendary State Championship team from 1973.
In the 1974 edition of The Minamek, Mr. Herring was recognized as the most likely to “hang around the Firehouse” illustrating his true passion for fire service. The residents of Freeland are fortunate to have dedicated volunteer firefighters, who respond when any emergency arises. Cal Herring has answered that call since 1976. He has been a member of the Freeland Fire Department for over 45 years as a Firefighter, Engineer, Committee Chair, Past Chief, and Line Officer. The Freeland Fire Department Relief Association recently installed their officers for 2023, and Mr. Herring will continue in his role as Treasurer. He is a PA State Fire Academy Firefighter Accreditation Evaluator, an educational position he has held for the past eight years. Mr. Herring has been a member of the Six County Firefighters Association for 40 years and
helped to organize their final annual convention this past May. Additionally, he’s been an active firefighter with Diamond Fire Co. No. 2 since 1994.
Freeland Fire Chief Joe Stepansky, also MMI’s Director of Facilities, said, “The knowledge and experience Cal has passed on to so many firefighters over the last 45 years is indispensable. He is a mentor to us all, is always the last one out in a fire, and has become a true friend.”
In addition to serving as a first responder, Mr. Herring has volunteered his time as a member of the Greater Hazleton Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors (2016-2022), the CAN DO Board of Directors (2016-present), the American Red Cross Hazleton Chapter Board of Directors (1992-1994), and as a member of the Hazleton Rotary Club (2018-present). In 2021, Mr. Herring assumed the role of Community Relations Chair and Student Action Committee Advisor at CAN DO, both positions he holds today. This past summer, he was presented with the Chair Award for his dedication by Chairman Charles Burkhardt at CAN DO’s 66th Anniversary Program and Dinner. Mr. Herring has served as a lector at Immaculate Conception RC Church in Freeland intermittently since 1975, and is currently a member of Parish Council at his church.
The father of three girls, Mr. Herring was active throughout their youth, especially in areas pertaining to his daughter Jessica’s love of softball. He served as an officer and coach in the Valley Freeland Girls’ Softball League for 10 years, coached softball at Bishop Hafey Jr./Sr. High School from 2000-2005, and was the Pennsylvania State University, Hazleton Campus, Softball Coach from 2005-2007. He also spent time as a Fastpitch Umpire for the Amateur Softball Association.
Mr. Herring and his wife, Debra, will celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary on April 23, 2023. Mrs. Herring worked as a registered nurse at St. Joseph’s Medical Center and later as a Certified Nurse Assistant Instructor at Keystone Job Corps Center. They are parents to twins
Jessica Witek and Megan Herring, and Ashley Herring. Jessica and her husband, Tadeusz, have two children, Zofia (5) and Jacob (3).
Ashley Herring is engaged to Mitchell Sharpe, is mom to Gavin (10), and is also a member of the Freeland Fire Department.

Dan grew up in Beaver Meadows and the hub of this small town was Kostick’s Market, owned and operated by Dan’s parents, Mary and Michael. The family lived above the market and spent many hours downstairs in the store. Dan and his siblings, Eugene, Raymond ‘48, Doris, and Paul spent much of their childhood loading and unloading trucks, filling orders, and helping with the family business. The market was a busy place, especially during huckleberry season when Dan and his brothers would drive from one small coal mining town to another to purchase the wild berries local residents had picked.
Dan graduated in 1954 from MMI and at the age of 17, met the love of his life, Janet Lawrence, then 15. He attended Pennsylvania State University for a year before joining the U.S. Army, where he served for two years in post-war Germany. Following his military service, Dan enrolled at Villanova University, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering. He then went on to work at General Electric Corp. During one of his holiday visits back to Beaver Meadows, Dan and Janet ran into each other again. In 1962 they married and together they raised three children and welcomed 10 grandchildren.
Dan worked for General Electric in Philadelphia for nine years. In 1970, he and Janet returned to the Hazleton area and opened a Burger Chef restaurant. The burger business was not as profitable as they had hoped, and just three years later, they closed its doors for good. He then became a Pizza Hut franchisee, a business that saw enormous success and growth. Dan and Janet went on to own 13 Pizza Huts in Luzerne and Lackawanna counties.
Over the years, Dan Kostick showed his support of MMI in a variety of ways. He served as master of ceremonies for MMI’s 110th Gala Celebration. He was the commencement speaker for the Class of
2001. Back in the early 1980’s he began the MMI cross-country program and served as the team’s first coach. His commitment to making an MMI education possible for children of all economic backgrounds began during his tenure as an active MMI Board Member (1981-1989). During that time, Dan and Janet established the first of their two scholarships, The Michael and Mary Kostick Endowed Scholarship, in memory of his parents. During the Campaign for MMI that began in 2010 and culminated with the growth of MMI’s Endowment, the creation of the MMI Athletic Field Complex, and the construction of The Joseph A. Turri ’45 Library and Learning Center, the Kosticks established a second scholarship, The Daniel P. ’54 and Janet Kostick Endowed Scholarship. The combined value of his two scholarships within MMI’s endowment surpasses the $1.1 million mark. He was inducted into the MMI Wall of Fame in 2010 for his service to MMI and was a member of MMI’s Honorary Board until the time of his passing.
Every year during Orientation before the start of school at MMI, all new students are given a copy of the book, Growing Up in Coal Country by Susan Campbell Bartoletti. This book was a favorite of Dan’s and he felt that every MMI student should be aware of the history surrounding our school. He funded the purchase of 500 copies of this book directly from the publisher for MMI to share with all incoming families for the next few years. Dan was a true friend to MMI and his smile, kindness, and unflappable love for his family and our school will be greatly missed.
