Dear Friends of MMI,
Recently, I saw an MMI social post about some of our work study students helping our maintenance staff in our coal bin. My memories came flooding back! When I attended MMI from 1975-1979, my parents could not afford the tuition. I vividly remember them sitting at the kitchen table at the end of each month, spilling out change from a Mason jar to try to cobble together the monthly tuition payment. To help defray my tuition expenses, President Joseph Rudawski offered me a work-study job. In the summers, I painted the halls, stripped the floor wax, cleaned the windows, and disinfected the trash cans. During the school year, Mr. John Hollad, our custodian who doubled as our lunch chef, let me work as his sous-chef and cashier. And in the winter, I arrived early to shovel coal into the stoker to heat the School and stayed after to haul the ashes from the coal bin.
Never did I dream, while hefting heavy shovels full of coal into that blazing fire, that I would someday have the honor of serving as MMI Board Chair.
An investment in students yields incredible returns. On behalf of the Board of Directors, I offer our deepest gratitude. Your steadfast support of our School allows us to continue to provide an extraordinary educational experience for each student, despite the challenges of the world around us.
No matter your contribution as a donor, volunteer, mentor, or proud Prepper fan, you are enriching the MMI experience. Your generosity provides critical support for curricular and programmatic innovations and enhancements, ongoing faculty professional development, improvement of our facilities, and financial assistance for our families in need.
To each of you, we cannot say thank you enough times for maintaining the dedication, commitment, and passion for our mission. I am pleased to present this Annual Donor Report, highlighting gifts made to MMI during the last fiscal year. You are a partner in our past and future success, and I hope the report gives you confidence and affirms your generous investment in our School.
Since 1879, MMI has been a font of hope and inspiration. The next generation of MMI students is hearing her promises. And, I trust, long after my service, a future Board Chair will reminisce about his or her work-study experience and continue to offer it for our students. I still empty my pocket change into a Mason jar, and each time I do, I fondly remember my blessed parents, Mr. Rudawski, and Mr. Hollad.
With warmest regards,
Richard A. DiLiberto Jr., Esq. ’79 Chair of the Board of Directors
Hello Friends of MMI,
I’m thrilled to connect with you again as we reflect on a year of growth, innovation, and potential at MMI. Your continued support has been inspiring, and I’m eager to share how your generosity is shaping the future of our School.
This past year, your contributions have done more than just support our programs—they have ignited a passion for learning, exploration, and excellence in every corner of our campus. Our classrooms are buzzing with new ideas, our sports fields echo with the cheers of teamwork, and our entire community is more vibrant because of you. Every donation, large or small, has a ripple effect, touching the lives of our students in ways that will carry them forward into their promising futures.
But it’s not just about what happens within our walls. Your investment in MMI is an investment in the world beyond. Each student you support is a future leader, thinker, and doer, equipped to make meaningful contributions to society.
As we look ahead, I am filled with optimism and excitement. The road before us is bright, and together, we will continue to cultivate an environment where students can thrive, excel, and make a difference.
Thank you for your unwavering commitment to MMI. Here’s to another year of shared success and impactful education.
Warm regards,
Theresa Long Head of School

While the total cost of educating each student is $21,809 per year, the school remains able to keep tuition affordable by offsetting the difference through income from endowment funds and annual contributions to MMI.
The 2024–25 school year marked a historic milestone for MMI: for the first time ever, unrestricted gifts to support MMI’s programs and operations surpassed the $1 million mark. This incredible achievement is a powerful reflection of our community’s belief in MMI’s mission and the life-changing education it provides.
When we include all giving – unrestricted Annual Fund gifts and restricted gifts to the MMI Endowment – overall contributions totaled $1,324,083 from 549 donors. Every single gift mattered. 72 gifts were less than $25, and 214 were less than $50 - yet together they built a broad base of support that sustains MMI for every student. First-time donors alone contributed more than $51,000, showing that the spirit of giving continues to grow.
Alumni support was especially strong this year. With 2,026 living alumni, their collective gifts totaled $368,495—an increase of more than $122,000 over the previous year. Participation reached 12%, well above the national average for independent schools (8.4%) and nearly double the average for schools our size (6.9%). Classes rallied together to make an impact:
● The Class of 1975 led all giving with $213,601, followed by the Class of 1995 with $66,848.
● The Class of 1976 ($46,253) and the Class of 1958 ($31,725) also surpassed the $20,000 threshold.
● The Class of 1960 had the most donors (11), while the Class of 1962 set the pace in participation with 40% of classmates making a gift.
We also continue to celebrate the consistency of those recognized in the MMI Consecutive Giving Society, whose decades of support sustain MMI year after year. Their
example is matched only by the dedication of our senior-most alumni, including Mr. Hugh B. Fischer ’50, Mr. Edward R. Merrick ’54, Rabbi James L. Apple ’55, Dr. Andrew Kistulentz ’55, Deacon Gene Kovatch ’55, and Dr. Martin Sokoloski ’55, whose loyalty is a testament to the lifelong impact of an MMI education.
Support extended beyond the Annual Fund as well. Donors gave $124,509 to endowed scholarships and funds, nearly doubling pre-COVID levels. Businesses and individuals contributed $112,850 through Pennsylvania’s tax credit programs (EITC and OSTC), bringing the total awarded in scholarship support since 2005 to nearly $4.5 million. MMI also received bequest gifts totaling $135,761, demonstrating the enduring impact of planned giving and the deep legacy of alumni and friends who chose to make MMI part of their estate plans.
And on a single day, during our 2025 Day of Giving, 93 donors came together to raise $48,520 to launch MMI’s first-ever E-Sports Program. With this new initiative, students will gain opportunities to build teamwork, strategy, and STEM-related skills while joining one of the fastest-growing collegiate activities in the country.
Together, these achievements reflect more than just numbers—they show a thriving culture of generosity that is helping MMI students learn, grow, and prepare for lives of impact.
Thanks to our committed donors, this year’s Annual Fund has made a powerful impact on the MMI community. Your support has expanded learning opportunities, enhanced our campus, and energized the student experience. Together, we achieved a remarkable total of $1,324,083 in gifts which is a direct reflection of the passion and dedication of the MMI family. We couldn’t do it without you!
At MMI, we are proud to ensure that every student has access to an exceptional education, no matter their financial circumstances. More than half of our students receive scholarships, a testament to our commitment to making MMI accessible to all.
In 2024-25, contributions to our Endowed Scholarship Funds totaled $124,509, while generous businesses and individuals participating in the Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) and Opportunity Scholarship Tax Credit (OSTC) programs donated an additional $112,850. This year also marked the creation of the Titus Family Endowed Scholarship in honor of the retirement of long-time faculty member Mrs. Donna Titus, which will
help future students from the Weatherly area pursue their education at MMI.
Our work-study program continues to provide meaningful support for students in grades 9–12. During the summer, these students contribute to campus life through maintenance tasks such as coal bin work, shoveling ashes, cleaning and waxing, and groundskeeping. Building on this, the Hersker Work Grant program, established by John H. Hersker ’76, offers $2,000 grants to students who hold outside jobs and submit pay stubs for verification, helping even more Preppers achieve their goals of an MMI diploma.
Investing in professional development for MMI’s faculty and staff pays dividends that ripple across the entire student experience. By honing their teaching skills and staying on the cutting edge of educational strategies, our educators are able to engage, inspire, and challenge students like never before. Thanks to the generosity of our Annual Fund donors, MMI’s faculty participated in a wide array of conferences during the 2024–25 school year, gaining new insights and tools to make learning even more impactful.

Lifetime giving of $100,000 or more is required for recognition in MMI’s most prestigious donor society.
The Black Diamond Society was created in 2012 to honor those individuals and organizations who have generously supported MMI Preparatory School throughout the years. It is MMI’s most prestigious donor society and includes benefactors whose lifetime giving to MMI surpasses the $100,000 mark. There are currently 63 members of the Black Diamond Society, and we welcome the two additions who joined this society through their philanthropy over the past year!
A great part of our MMI legacy revolves around what was called “black diamond,” or anthracite coal. Black diamonds burn the most steadily, cleanly, and longest of all coal. The black diamond was the most treasured type of coal, just like the members of the Black Diamond Society at MMI are our most respected donors.
Through the Black Diamond Society, the school honors the leadership and extraordinary support of these individuals and organizations who provide a foundation of financial support for both the current and the future student body at MMI.

The MMI Consecutive Giving Society was created in 2023 to recognize those alumni, parents, friends, faculty, and staff who have made gifts for 10+, 20+, and 30+ consecutive years in support of MMI. Their consistent contributions play a pivotal role in sustaining our mission and programs every year. Inclusion in this distinguished group is designed to celebrate the value of loyalty among consistent donors. By earning a place in this society, a donor becomes a driving force behind the continuity of MMI’s initiatives, allowing the school to plan confidently for the future, invest in innovative projects, and provide a lasting impact on the lives MMI touches.

MMI Head of School Mrs. Theresa Long stands with Wall of Fame inductee Attorney Rebecca L. Warren ’84 flanked by her sons, Blake ‘24 and Grant ‘20. To the right of Grant are retired faculty member Mrs. Donna Titus, Mr. David Long, and Mr. Albert Titus.
The Grandparents’ Club was formed in 2011 to pay tribute to MMI grandparents and great grandparents who invest in the education of their grandchildren every year with a minimum gift of $100 to the Annual Fund. Through the Grandparents’ Club, the school honors those who carry on the tradition of supporting MMI’s Four Pillars of Excellence. It is one of the things we proudly pass on from generation to generation!

The Timber Society is an organization committed to the future support of MMI Preparatory School. The name of the society is derived from the wooden supports that were used in the deep mines to prop the roof, as well as the earth above it. The timbers allowed the miners to move forward in their quest of anthracite coal as they earned a living and fueled the industrial revolution.
The symbol for the Timber Society is the White Oak (Quercus alba), which is native to the eastern United States and was harvested for use as timbers in the mines. At maturity, it can reach 100 feet in height and is a wide-spreading specimen whose leaves turn rich purple and wine in the autumn.
The large tree provides shade and beauty as it grows. The timbers permitted the deep mines to be used to extract the anthracite coal from its beds below the surface. The timbers continued to serve the people above, long after the miners completed their work.
The Timber Society recognizes individuals who have thoughtfully and generously provided for MMI’s financial future through planned gifts. Through their foresight, they will continue to support the work being done by MMI well into the future.
