from the Head of School
Hello Everyone!
I am delighted to write my first newsletter message to our community as MMI’s Head of School! I hope this message finds you all enjoying our beautiful Northeast weather!
We began in late August welcoming our fabulous students back to school. I am amazed at the many activities and events we’ve held since school has begun. The sports teams have done exceptionally well! Girls’ tennis, girls’ volleyball, soccer, golf, and cross country have been so much fun to watch. The students really worked hard and demonstrated commitment and drive each and every game/match! We are so proud of our Preppers!
Our first back to school dance was held in September along with the traditional Prepper Field Day. We celebrated our freshmen and seniors with Bonding Day. The students really seemed to enjoy the experience of getting to know and support each other. We recognized October as Breast Cancer Awareness month. The Interact Club, inspired by current student Mia Jones, created pink ribbons for the students, faculty, and staff to purchase and wear in honor of breast cancer survivors/thrivers and for those brave heroes who have lost their battle with this disease. As part of Spirit Week leading up to the Halloween holiday, we had a Pink Out day as well as various other themed dress days throughout the week.
The Parents Association worked tirelessly creating great events for our students. The gummy sale, held in conjunction with the student council, has been a big hit! Thank you to the Parents Association for all of their work and to everyone who has supported this effort! The Fall Fun Event was wonderful and the students enjoyed creating bleach dye shirts, launching pumpkins, sitting by the campfire, and more throughout the evening. I am enjoying the opportunity to get to know your children and you through participation in these events.
I have also had the opportunity to represent MMI in the community and began meeting our alumni. I hosted my first Wall of Fame Awards dinner and celebrated the outstanding accomplishments of some of our alums who you will read about in this newsletter. I attended the Chamber of Commerce’s Anniversary celebration and Awards Luncheon, where a number of our alumni and friends were honored. MMI sponsored a networking mixer at the Hazleton Library, held a meeting of the Honorary Board at Valley Country Club, and held a prospective family Meet & Greet event at Blue Ridge Trail Country Club.
Thank you to all for extending your kindness and support to me as I settle into my new role. I look forward to a challenging and fun school year and am grateful to be serving you as the new Head of School at MMI. Best,

Cover Story
The MMI 2009 Varsity Girls Volleyball Team was honored for Athletic Achievement for being the first and only girls’ team to win a District 2 Single A Championship. The only small school single A team in the Wyoming Valley Conference, MMI beat much larger AAAA, AAA, and AA schools such as Wyoming Valley West and Hazleton Area High School to earn an overall 12-8 record. The squad qualified for the District 2 A play offs for the first time since the program’s inception in 2004. Members of the team included: Diana Anthony ’10, Ashmeen Bains ’13, Courtney Bogansky ’11, Dana Chippi ’11, Maurina DiSabella ’13, Kelly Duffy, Caitlin Ferry ’10, Katlyn Frey ’13, Sarah Gittleman ’11, Cathy Hood ’11, Kayla Karchner ’13, Alyson Klush ’10, Brone Lobichusky ’10, Amanda Miller ’11, Derya Sari ’13, Alaina Titus ’10, Alyssa Tirano ’12, Shannon Wenner ’10, and Kristen Young ’13. The head coach for the team was Bruce Young and he was assisted by Dr. Gregg Bluth.
Tyler J. Breznitsky ’09 was inducted as the most prolific scorer in MMI’s boys’ basketball history, ranking as the School’s all-time leader with 1,900 points after averaging 21 points per game over his four-year career as a Prepper. He became the all-time leading scorer after eclipsing the 36-year record of 1,644 set by Jim Lundy ’73 whose career was capped by the 1973 Class C State Basketball Title. Tyler continued his basketball career at Wilkes University, where he played guard for the Colonels for four years, averaging 12 points per game and scoring more than 800 career points.
Edward (Ned) McNelis, Esq. was inducted for service to MMI for serving 12 years as a volunteer assistant coach in both boys’ basketball and baseball in the middle school and varsity level, as well as the girls’ basketball team. Ned learned from his mother, a teacher, that athletics was important, but academics was the key to success. He always believed that athletics was complimentary to academics and emphasized to the players that their schoolwork at MMI was paramount. Ned is a dual licensed attorney practicing in all Pennsylvania state courts and is licensed to practice in the Eastern and Middle Federal District Courts. He is currently president of the Lower Luzerne County Bar Association. He and his wife, former MMI Board Member Florie
McNelis, are the parents of Connor ’10, Audrey, and Ryan ’21, all of whom benefitted from his coaching efforts at MMI.
Thomas P. Crofcheck ’73 was inducted for professional achievement for his service to the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare, where he spent 35 years before retirement. Over his career Tom was responsible for Internal Audit Decisions for the state of Pennsylvania managing a staff of over 30 field auditors, with offices in Scranton, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, and Harrisburg. He is a Certified Fraud Examiner and Certified Government Financial Manager and was responsible for performance audits as well as fraud and abuse audits of the Pennsylvania Department of Welfare with annual budgets over $14 billion. In 2004, as the Director of Internal Audits, he showed uncommon diligence and resolve as he initiated a state audit of the juvenile detention center at the heart of the kids-for-cash scandal. The audit resulted in a criminal case that drew national attention to a gross abuse of the legal system that victimized

unprotected juveniles. In 2010 he was awarded the Governor’s Award of Excellence for his efforts on this audit. Now retired, Tom occupies his time as treasurer for the Foster Township Fearnots Volunteer Fire Company and American Legion Riders Post 473.
John G. (Jerry) Hludzik ’70, inducted for professional achievement, was a famed musician, song writer, and producer. He spent time in various local bands and attended Luzerne County Community College where he met Bill Kelly, co-founder of The Buoys, and brother of MMI Head of School, Theresa Long. Jerry joined The Buoys and the group vaulted to national prominence when their hit song, “Timothy,” peaked at number 17 on the Billboard Top 40 chart. The song was penned by Rupert Holmes, who also wrote “Escape (The Pina Colada Song)”, and was reportedly loosely based on the legendary Shepton Mine Disaster. Their follow-up single “Give Up Your Guns” also made the Billboard Top 100. The group disbanded in the mid-70’s. Following the break-up, Jerry and Bill formed Jerry-Kelly in the late 70’s and eventually morphed into Dakota in 1980 where they had some international success. Dakota reached Billboard’s Top 100 when “If It Takes All Night” reached number 78 and got them the chance to open for Queen during Queen’s The Game Tour. After the partners split in the mid-80’s,
Jerry continued to write songs and was signed to MCA Music Publishing in Nashville as a songwriter where he scored album cuts by the Oak Ridge Boys. He continued to perform as a solo artist and with Dakota, along with the late Rick Manwiller and son Eli Hludzik on drums, until his illness and subsequent passing in 2020.
The MMI Wall of Fame Committee consists of seven members and meets at least once a year to identify and recognize alumni, volunteers, nonsitting board members, and past faculty and staff of MMI or of the Mining and Mechanical Institute, its former name, who have distinguished themselves in the area of athletics, business, sciences, education, government, public service, the arts or the humanities. This distinction is defined as the achievement of a position recognized to be a major significance in their chosen field, to be part of a team recognized for significant accomplishments in its chosen field, or to someone whose efforts have contributed significantly to the betterment of MMI. The committee will accept nominations to the Wall of Fame, review and select worthy candidates, and present those candidates to the MMI Board of Directors for review and approval. The MMI Wall of Fame is designed to enhance relationships between alumni and MMI, its current and prospective students and families, and the community at large.

MMI Announces Early Enrollment Grant
MMI Preparatory School announced it will make early enrollment grants available to families who attend the Exploration Day in November or January and enroll their student(s) by March 15, 2023.
“We believe that every child who has the drive to do so should have access to an MMI education. That’s why we’re offering an early enrollment grant to new students and have a tuition assistance program in place,” said Theresa Long, MMI Head of School. “Today’s economy is not getting any easier so we’re looking at ways to help families make the decision to choose an MMI education.”
Any family that has a new student and attends the Exploration Day in either November or January is eligible for the $2,000 grant when they enroll for the first time before March 15. In order to meet the March 15 deadline, families must complete the admissions and tuition assistance process by March 1. This is a one-time grant designed to help families make the decision to send their child to an independent school. Families are also eligible to
apply for tuition assistance to help them afford the remaining tuition balance. Over 54% of MMI families receive some type of need-based tuition assistance with the average aid award being just over $8,500.
All families that apply for tuition assistance are required to reapply annually however, this grant is non-renewable. Marci Hosier, MMI Director of Enrollment Management said, “Many people think they cannot afford an MMI education, but the reality is that we have a robust tuition assistance program and work with many families to help make an MMI education possible. Our hope is that the addition of the early enrollment grant will give people another reason to look at MMI for their child’s sixth through 12th grade education.”
Anyone interested in registering for the November 19 or January 28 Exploration Days, or in finding out more about the Early Enrollment Grant, should contact Marci Hosier, Director of Enrollment Management, at (570) 636-1108 Ext. 136 or email mhosier@mmiprep.org.

Thank You!
A special thanks goes out to Jeff Gicking ’75 who donated a unique wall sculpture to MMI this fall which hangs in the lobby of the Joseph A. Turri ’45 Library and Learning Center.
The piece was designed by Yael Govseyeff Kahanov, a recent resident of Harveys Lake, PA. The body of Yael’s artwork consists of three-dimensional wall sculptures made of Glass on Copper. The process involves shaping copper sheets to gain the sculptural size, shape and movement of the desired design. A coat of ground- pigmented glass, called Frit, is then applied to the copper surface in various layers and amounts to conform to the design, color, texture, and vibrancy of the piece. The glass and copper are then fused together in a furnace. The Frit becomes molten at a temperature of about 1500° F. Manipulation of the temperature and duration of fire allows the base colors to appear at different intensity.
Ms. Kahanov has an impressive list of commissioned work for major corporations, institutions, and private collectors throughout the United States, Europe, Middle East, Asia, and Africa. Some nationally familiar companies in which Yael’s works are on display include Eli Lilly & Co. at the Insulin Center and Methodist Hospital at the Children Pavilion and Library, both in Indianapolis, IN and Lincoln Insurance Museum headquarters at Fort Wayne, IN. Throughout her career, Yael engaged in art workshops and art instructions at Indiana University and Purdue University at Indianapolis’ Continuing Studies program, as well as, serving as an adjunct instructor.
Thank you, Jeff, for sharing this piece with the MMI community!

Civilization class played the “Wheelin’ and Dealin’” game. Each group was an early civilization and they had to go around the room to trade with other civilizations. The goal was to get the most variety points but also keep a lot of your original home goods.
• 6th graders in Mrs. Katie Zucco’s World Geography class examined several suitcases which included clues to specific geographic locations in the United States. Using their geographical and critical thinking skills, students used the clues to figure out where their suitcase was headed.
• 9th grade biology investigated why cells are so small by determining surface volume ratios. The students are making cells from dialysis tubing billed with a phenolphthalein color indicator and soaking them in a basic solution. The rate at which the cells turn from clear to colored will demonstrate cell size efficiency.
Mele’s class documented the life of Henrietta Lacks and her contribution to science. Each group had a different task: timeline, science and technology contributions, and notable individuals and litigation.
Students in Mrs. Marci Hosier’s Strategic Communication class took unique objects and tested their persuasive speaking skills by creating :30 or 1:00 commercials to try to convince their classmates to purchase the item. Faculty & Staff members supplied the unique items like a candle making mold, a vintage scoop and hand beater, Thor’s Hammer, classic cassette tape and player, non-digital camera, Chinese Drum, and much more! Students had to figure out what their object was used for and create a short presentation describing the features and benefits.

The MMI community mourns the passing of Edgar A. Gower, Sr. who died on Wednesday, October 26, 2022, at the age of 93. “Doc” Gower was a dedicated mathematics teacher at MMI from 1956 to 1993. He genuinely enjoyed teaching at MMI and was always proud of his students and their achievements.
Born March 24, 1929, he was a star baseball pitcher and graduate of White Haven High School. Doc threw a no-hitter for the League Champion Havenites in his senior year. He earned his Bachelor’s Degree from Wilkes College and Masters from the University of Scranton. Doc served his country proudly in the US Army, in Europe, during the Korean Conflict.
During his 37-year tenure at MMI, Mr. Gower served as Math Department chairman, baseball coach, and class advisor. He was also moderator of various clubs including the Mathematics Club and the Mechanical Drawing Club. Mr. Gower encouraged his students to enter numerous math competitions and helped prepare them for success resulting in several championship teams. He was inducted into the MMI Wall of Fame in 2007 for his service to MMI.
An excerpt from the 1991 Minamek Yearbook addressed the impact that he had on his students – “Mr. Gower will be remembered for the great pains he took to ensure that everyone completely understood the problem at hand before attacking the next one.” Another quote in the yearbook states “Mr. Gower’s friendly discussions and timely comments have left a lasting impression with us.”
A man of great faith, he was an active member of St. Patrick’s Church, White Haven. A die-hard St. Louis Cardinals fan, Doc’s love of baseball continued throughout his life as a longtime coach for White Haven Little League, Babe Ruth, and for MMI.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Louise in 2018, his brothers John “Beaver” and Harry “Pete,” and brother-in-law Kenny Meckes. He is survived by his sister Belva Meckes and his sister-in-law Rosalie Simko and her husband Paul.

Eric (Todd) Forschner ‘82 released a new book through Wipf & Stock Publishers and an album through Echoes Blue Music. His debut book, The Fullness of Love – From Mere Churchianity to an
Awakened Life, calls out to a world in need of grace, and promotes a love forward future. Todd declares a mandate stating, “It’s time to know deeper, not more,” as freedom is found in the unknowing mysteries of God. Unfiltered by Churchianity, steeped in a history of racism and religious nationalism, the teachings of Jesus are revolutionary to hearers today. Life after death is explored based on Todd’s personal experience, and western belief is deconstructed and reimagined in this new book. The companion music album is an immersive ambient worship experience, featuring nine stunning tracks by artists from around the world, including Salt of the Sound, Eliza King, Rising Violet, Anita Tatlow, & Eric Todd. Additionally, his company Ethos Music/YFM just launched a new music artist and label services platform, called “Garage Brand,” which is now live. Garage Brand provides worldclass digital marketing, social influencer promotion, and A&R services.
