LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR Greetings SSRC-Mellon Mays fellows: Welcome to Columbia University in the City of New York, and the Annual Graduate Student Summer Conference!

The Summer Conference is the time when the SSRC-Mellon community comes together to exchange ideas and renew our commitment to each other and the objectives of the program.

It is important to acknowledge the growth and range of the Mellon Fellows network. MMUF started in 1988 with eight member schools and selected its first cohort of students in 1989. There are now 48 member schools including our three South African universities and the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) consortium of 34 schools. More than 6,000 rising juniors have become Mellon fellows over the past decades. Our Mellon community includes more than 860 PhDs and over 700 graduate students who are enrolled in doctoral programs.

We have about 100 fellows participating in this year’s Summer Conference. This is a time and space to forge new relationships with your colleagues that will last throughout your professional lives.

This supportive network of Mellon fellows is ever more important during this period of intellectual and economic transition in the academy. It is also a transformative period within our funding organization. As of March 2018, Dr. Elizabeth Alexander is the new president of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Dr. Alexander is a poet, writer, and scholar; most recently, she was the Wun Tsun Tam Mellon Professor in Humanities at Columbia University. It is an exciting time as she shares her vision for the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

Our schedule, as always, is filled with opportunities to connect with Mellon fellows who come from colleges and universities in the US and our three South African institutions. The panel discussants are all Mellon PhDs who can share their own experiences of the Summer Conference. Each year we ask a veteran Mellon fellow to share their experience in the form of the Benjamin Mays address. Dr. Erica Edwards, who entered MMUF at Spelman College and is now an Associate Professor of English at Rutgers University, will be giving the address. There is much to be learned from our keynote speaker as well. Melissa Nobles, Professor of Political Science and Kenan Sahin Dean of the School of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences at MIT, also serves on the Board of Directors of the SSRC. Both of these stellar scholars embody and exemplify the mission of the MMUF programs.

The Planning and Advisory Committee takes your feedback very seriously when designing the Conference. This year we have added a new feature to connect fellows via discipline. They have also taken special care in designing workshops that address issues that you have identified, allowing conversation around the challenges and concerns that you may have at particular stages of your graduate school career. Senior Mellon fellows will be facilitating these workshops so please come with your questions and be ready for a lively conversation. We are also excited to have Dr. Karinn Glover, a psychiatrist and faculty member at Albert Einstein School of Medicine, join us to address issues of health and self-care for people of color with an emphasis on academic life.

In addition to this impressive group of speakers, the most important element of every Summer Conference is you.

Support your friends and colleagues by being actively engaged as they present their research. Take advantage of the opportunity to expand your network beyond your cohort year. Lifelong friendships and professional collaborations have begun at Summer Conferences. There is much to be learned from our peers in the advanced years of graduate school as well as those who are just beginning their journey. I look forward to an inspirational and rejuvenating conference as we all share these few days of fellowship and community.

DISCIPLINARY NETWORKING The Summer Conference is an opportunity to meet fellows who are in the same discipline but may be in different years or institutions. In order to facilitate this networking, we have organized a casual, selfguided session. Please find the table in Skyline Dining Room that best corresponds to your discipline.

Once your group has assembled, you can collectively decide on the relevant issues that you would like to discuss. For instance, you may choose to talk about the particular opportunities and challenges that you face in your discipline, such as those related to coursework, professional association meetings, fellowships, or publications.

WORKSHOPS Workshops: Navigating the Graduate School Experience One of our goals at the SSRC-Mellon Mays Graduate Initiatives Program is to support fellows throughout graduate school. There are issues central to where you are in your graduate school, whether you are a recent graduate entering a PhD program, or in your first through third years of graduate school. These workshops provide the opportunity for you to ask questions about your individual experiences, as well as learn from seasoned Mellon fellows who have completed the PhD. We have divided you into groups according to your year in graduate school so that the conversation can focus solely on your questions and concerns. The unwritten title for these sessions is, “everything you wanted to know about graduate school but haven’t been able to ask.”

SPEAKER BIOGRAPHIES ERICA EDWARDS Erica R. Edwards is Associate Professor of English at Rutgers University-New Brunswick, where she holds the Presidential Term Chair in African American Literature. She is the author of Charisma and the Fictions of Black Leadership, which was awarded the Modern Language Association’s William Sanders Scarborough Prize. She is the co-editor of Keywords for African American Studies, published in 2018 by NYU Press. Dr. Edwards is the recipient of many prestigious fellowships and grants, most recently having completed a residency at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard University. Her work on African American literature, politics, and gender critique has appeared in journals such as differences, Callaloo, American Quarterly, American Literary History, and Black Camera.

MELISSA NOBLES Melissa Nobles is Kenan Sahin Dean of the School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences, and Professor of Political Science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Dr. Nobles’ research and teaching have focused on the comparative study of racial and ethnic politics, and issues of retrospective justice. Her current research centers on constructing a database of racial killings in the American South, 1930–1954.

Working closely as a faculty collaborator and advisory board member of Northeastern Law School’s Civil Rights and Restorative Justice law clinic, Dr. Nobles has conducted extensive archival research, unearthing understudied and more often, unknown deaths and contributing to legal investigations. She is the author of two books, Shades of Citizenship: Race and the Census in Modern Politics (Stanford University Press, 2000), The Politics of Official Apologies (Cambridge University Press, 2008), and coeditor with Jun-Hyeok Kwak of Inherited Responsibility and Historical Reconciliation in East Asia (Routledge Press, 2013). Her scholarship has also appeared in the Annual Review of Political Science, Daedalus, American Journal of Public Health, and several edited books. Dr. Nobles is a graduate of Brown University where she majored in History. She received her MA and PhD in Political Science from Yale University. She has served on the editorial boards of Polity, American Political Science Review, and Perspectives on Politics journals. Dr. Nobles has also been involved in faculty governance at MIT and beyond, serving as the Associate Chair of the MIT Faculty from 2007–2009 and vice-president of the American Political Science Association, 2013–14. She is currently on the SSRC Board of Directors.

KARINN GLOVER, MD, MPH Born in the Bronx and raised in White Plains, New York, Dr. Glover has spent the greater part of her adult life following her interests in science, health and improving life for women and the underserved. After graduating from Howard University with a BA in History, Dr. Glover worked at Essence Magazine and then as an Account Executive for Verizon. She followed her curiosity about medicine and ultimately attended SUNY Downstate College of Medicine and obtained a Master of Public Health from Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health. Currently Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Dr. Glover has authored a peer-reviewed article on mental disorders in primary care, contributed to a textbook on psychiatric treatment and has extensive training in psychopharmacology and substance abuse treatment. She is also the Director of Adult Behavioral Health at Montefiore Medical Group, leading mental health service provision at 20 primary care sites throughout the Bronx and Westchester.

PLANNING AND ADVISORY COMMITTEE The Planning and Advisory Committee (PAC) is the key link between Mellon fellows and program staff.

Members provide indispensable intellectual and programmatic leadership for the SSRC-Mellon Mays Graduate Initiatives Program during their two-year terms. One of the primary responsibilities of the PAC is to contribute to the intellectual organization of the Annual Graduate Student Summer Conference.

The PAC represents the diversity of the SSRC-Mellon Mays community, and it is an important mechanism for channeling the scholarly expertise and mentorship capabilities of the Mellon PhDs back into the program.

Aliyah Abu-Hazeem University of Notre Dame Sociology Second Year Bound by Narrative: An In-Depth Investigation of the Effects of Racial and Gender Complexities, Uneven Power Relations, and Pathways in and out of Mobility Within An All-Boys High School in Chicago

A longstanding debate within the sociology of education subfield has interrogated whether schools remain "the great equalizer" for students, especially those located at the margins of society. On the South Side of Chicago, this uncertainty is intensified for young, Black boys who have been demarcated as hypermasculine or innately deviant and prone to violent and criminal tendencies. Yet, we know very little about how the confluence of these boys racial and gender identities coupled with their own, often heteronormative and limiting, understanding of masculinity has paradoxically allowed them to use the classroom space as a site in the reproduction of narratives of hypermasculinity and the maintenance of machismo. Through a deep dive into the daily realities of young, Black boys at a distinguished all-boys high school on the South Side of Chicago, this paper will showcase how organizational procedures of power embedded within narrativity can work to insidiously cause boys to replicate the very stigmas about Black men in the world that their ancestors have spent decades trying to escape. With over 40 hours of classroom observations and in-depth interview data from 32 participants, I have found that in a predominately-Black, all-boys high school setting, which bolsters a strong emphasis on college preparation, Black-male professionalism, and a brotherhood rooted in male solidarity, the boys in my study are, instead, learning how to perform a heavily racialized and hypersexualized form of masculinity that has grave repercussions for their future socialization in an increasingly diverse society and their success outcomes post-graduation.

Dina Asfaha University of Pennsylvania Anthropology Second Year Guerrilla Medicine: Theory and Praxis

Ethiopia is heralded as the only African nation to have never been colonized. Few people realize it was a colonial power, occupying neighboring Eritrea from 1952 until the Eritrean Armed Struggle for Independence proved victorious in 1991. Eritrea defeated Ethiopia despite having far fewer soldiers in part because doctors trained scores of ordinary Eritreans farmers, mothers, and adolescents as combat medics. Central to Eritrea’s liberation strategy was an elaborate habitat in the rural Nakfa trenches that included schools, armories, and garages; but, its centerpiece was the underground hospital called Orotta. The agar hakaim (barefoot doctors in the Eritrean language of Tigrinya) approach to healthcare and medical knowledge, modeled after the barefoot doctors system created under Chairman Mao Zedong’s communist China, transformed clinical practice during the Eritrean revolution and laid the groundwork for medicine in contemporary Eritrea. Because of Eritrea’s numerical disadvantage against imperial Ethiopia who was backed by the United States and the Soviet Union Eritreans were faced with insufficient provisions, medical instruments and tools, and a hazardous geography. Amid disaster, how did methods of transmitting medical knowledge establish protocols for clinical practice, especially with the aforementioned challenges? In this paper, I will shed light on how agar hakaim training brought to the fore a philosophy of care centered on a sustained negotiation of the value of a human life guerrilla medicine.

Ruby Bafu University of Wisconsin-Madison Sociology First Year The Impact of School Punishment on the Racial Understanding and Educational Outcomes of Young Black Girls

A quick look at the news shows us that Black female students in schools across the nation are still disproportionately disciplined for natural aspects of their being, such as their way of speech, skin color, or hair. In fact, the adultification of young Black girls causes their bodies to be scrutinized, hypersexualized, and excessively monitored for simply existing while Black. I aim to study the racial and gendered nature of school disciplinary practices, the variation in how it is carried out amongst female students, and how school punishment impacts the educational outcomes and racial understanding of Black girls. I use interviews and participant observation to identify the presence of racial disparities in punishment outcomes amongst teenage girls attending Madison Metropolitan middle schools and their effect on the life experiences of Black, female students. In doing so, this study illustrates how punitive practices and discriminatory school policies influence how Black girls come to understand their Blackness. It also highlights how the classification of several types of deviant behavior is rooted in racist and sexist ideologies. Finally, this study can be applied more broadly to influence what we know about non-Black female racial minority students and their experiences with punishment and racial formation.

Elizabeth Barahona Northwestern University History First Year A History of African American and Latinx Communities in North Carolina

My project historicizes the connections between African American and Latinx communities in Durham, North Carolina as the Latinx population grew between 1980 and 2010. During this time, they opened businesses, settled in African American neighborhoods, and became increasingly active politically. When Latinx people moved to Durham, they became incorporated into already-existing systems of racial discrimination. The Black community in Durham was historically subjected to over-policing and racial discrimination in housing, schooling, and employment. Likewise, Latinx communities became overpoliced and subjected to immigration raids that targeted undocumented people at alarming rates. In response to their shared circumstances, Black and Latinx community members came together to fight against discrimination. This paper aims to address Durham’s Latinx community and black-brown relations: to build on the understandings about Black/Latino relations in Durham; to take a social and cultural approach to the history of the Latinx community in Durham; and finally, to understand the relationship between the two communities in terms of coalition-building and mutual financial support through Black banks and Latinx businesses. My builds upon Sarah Mayorga-Gallo and Erin Callahan’s work. Mayorga-Gallo and Callahan, respectively, take sociological and linguistic approaches to understand the relationship between White, African American, and Latino people in specific neighborhoods in Durham, limiting their research to the 21st century. I contribute to their scholarship by writing the history of Black/Latino relations in Durham, documenting a longer time frame.

Ashleigh Cartwright University of Pennsylvania Sociology Second Year A Remedy for Cultural Deprivation: Historicizing an Organizational Effort to Integrate American Schools

In 1963, about thirty educational and nonprofit leaders came together to found an organization called Pursuit. Intended to play a significant role in integrating K-12 schools, Pursuit carefully selected black and Latino boys to participate in an eight-week summer intensive to culturally prepare them for integrating a historically-white high school. Students were given a rigid and intensive schedule of classes and activities aimed to teach them how to properly dress, behave, talk, and present themselves. By the end of the intensive, Pursuit staff determined which students they would recommend for integration.

Seeking an understanding of the first part of this process, the selection of students, I use comparativehistorical methods to systematically compare the application files of two different groups of students: Pursuit applicants who were accepted and Pursuit applicants who were rejected in 1969. I will address the questions: How does Pursuit decide whether or not to accept a student? How can understanding his selection process contribute to our knowledge of cultural and social reproduction? I find that, although Pursuit claims to select students with exceptional academic performance, students are selected based on the ways in which disposition, family structure, and physical appearance are reflected in their applications. This suggests that students were only not selected based on how well they would, in the words of a Pursuit staff member, [be] indoctrinated with white middle-class values, but were also selected for being more palatable to white families, teachers, and administrators during the integration moment in the United States.

Alexandria Cunningham University of Texas - Austin African and African Diaspora Studies Second Year Black Radical Pleasure and the Possibilities of the Reported Post

On December 17, 2018, social media app Tumblr banned all adult content—photos, videos, illustrations and other media depicting sex acts—from its platform through the use of targeted algorithms. Months prior, Instagram utilized similar methods to target words believed to potentially facilitate sexual commerce, such as #stripper. Moreover, the continuous revision of Facebook’s privacy policy and community standards relies on crowdsourced surveillance of erotic content to erase entire accounts and group pages. Twelve years after its founding, Tumblr’s relaunch is tied to increasing, top-down trends of surveillance and censorship of erotic content from federal, state, and corporate policy concerning how the internet facilitates sexual commerce. The emerging imprint of social media apps in this moment reflects precarious sanitation with a potential to undermine various communities, sex worker and not, whose engagement with such spaces can create socioeconomic mobility, networks of resources, community, dialogue, and activism. The central concern of this research is how do Black women imagine, create, and take pleasure in the wake of this moment of digital erotic foreclosure? As such, this work engages Black feminist and queer theory to attend to Black women’s strategies of erotic placemaking online. It is argued that through an innovative leveraging of space and constraint, a Black feminist praxis of pleasure emerges that centers community, erotic exploration, spirituality, healing, and access in digital space.

Zipho Falakhe University of Cape Town Sociology & Social Behavioural Science Second Year The Politics of Mobility: When Young Black Women Take a Taxi in South Africa

The legal narrative in post-apartheid South Africa that everyone has the freedom of movement from one place to the next is challenged by the lived experiences of young women who use the taxi in South Africa. I argue that mobility is thus a political issue. The politics of mobility is a feminist concern as it speaks on how gendered identity impacts on women’s ability to move between spaces. The liberty or oppression one faces, depends on who they are and the space that they in (Cresswell, 2010: 160). This project is concerned about the mobility of Black young women, and, the issue of sexual harassment by taxi drivers. Using the experiences of black young women in commuting with taxis in Cape Town, my research will discuss the politics of mobility through an intersectional lens to unpack the dynamics of race, class and gender. As well as to find out the strategies used by young women against the oppression. I argue that the challenge against black women’s mobility is tied to the control of women’s bodies related to women’s autonomy because of how it threatens certain ideals of hegemonic masculinity (Ivaska, 2007: 214).

Brindley Fortuin University of Cape Town Sociology First Year Auto-ethnography and Creolization: Intergenerational Perceptions of Coloured Identity in South Africa

Post-Apartheid racial identities have been of much discussion in recent years. Coloured identity, as one of the most contested identities within South Africa, has been the subject of many debates, seminars, papers and media contents. This auto-ethnographic study explores the intergenerational construction of coloured identity as held by two pairs of grandparents and grandchildren. The key focus of this study is how coloured identities are intergenerationally contested (re)constructed, negotiated, interrogated and assimilated. Through two sets of paired in-depth, loosely structured interviews this study collects qualitative data on perceptions of coloured identity and brings it into a discussion with existing literature on the topic, particularly the works of Zimitri Erasmus and Mohamed Adhikari. Using the Miles and Huberman (1994) qualitative data analysis approach, key themes are being extracted from the participants' interviewed accounts. The key themes thus far abstracted are centred around violence, place and mobility and family history. These generated themes suggest that coloured identities are indeed (re)constructed, challenged, negotiated, interrogated and assimilated intergenerationally. These processes of identity-making appear in intergenerational accounts across two generations of peoples and therefore contributes towards understanding how coloured identity have been contested over time within the family space. What this presentation aims to do is use the preliminary findings and bring it into conversation with the exploration of creolization, particularly the place of violence in shaping identities. This opens up my research for a comparative study with other creole peoples in the diaspora.

Matre Grant Columbia University Sociology Second Year The Black Radical Tradition and Musical Theater: Questions of Race and Class in the Broadway Musical, "Once on This Island�

Many musical theater fans experience their first exposure to the genre by participating in amateur productions. However, these low-budget groups are required to lease the show from rights-owing agencies like Musical Theatre International (MTI). The musical, "Once on This Island", which premiered on Broadway in 1990 and recently underwent a revival in 2017, is one such show that is often performed at the amateur level. However, for many non-Broadway productions, finding an all-black cast has proven unfeasible. Due to this, the musical’s original composers along with the rights-owning agency have released an alternate version that amateurs can perform if they are unable to cast the show accurately. This alternate version changes all references to race in the script to references about class instead. In this paper, I perform a close reading of these dialogue changes and discuss how race and class are inextricably bound in the cultural setting of this musical. Through this analysis, I posit that Black musical theater written by white composers continuously fails the black community by inaccurately portraying and limiting black possibility in the theater community. This musical has not been considered at length in the field of musicology, and in general, there exists a lack in scholarship about both musicals written after 1990 and about issues of race that have emerged since this period. This paper seeks to fill that gap, move the field in a direction that takes such issues into consideration, and spawn further conversation about whether these shows should continue to be performed.

Kaylin Harrison University of Cape Town Geography Second Year Between (H)ome and (h)ome: Exploring sites of Translocality in Maitland, Cape Town

Translocal geographies provide ways for understanding how spaces and places can be examined both through their situatedness but also their connectedness to a variety of other locales. This exploration of sites of translocality engages with how migrants experiences expand across different scales of movement (national, international, local) in visiting sites in which various migrants participate in a range of activities ranging from a shop owner, restaurant owner to street vending. This study then asks; How are translocal relationships are formed in these spaces? How do these local sites connect to migrants Homelands? Exploring the Geographies of Home is central to this study as it gives insight into the everyday lives of migrants, seeing their locations as more fluid between and betwixt: between their maternal (H)omes and an imagined future (h)ome. This study therefore gives insight on migrants perceptions of what and where home is as well as their experience of home in their adopted space.

More so, this study explores migrants daily experience of participation and belonging in the street. This study draws on qualitative semi-structured interviews, participant observation and visual methods as the primary data collection tools with self-employed African migrants working along Voortrekker Road.

As Voortrekker Road encompasses a diverse retail make-up, this street reveals diversity manifested in the shops, street trading and groups of people with connections to the wider world through mobile practices. Findings lead to questions on how migrants maintain connections across various geographical scales and how this shapes their experience in Maitland.

Ann Ho University of Pennsylvania English First Year Little Newton, Jr.: Nostalgia, Children, and Subjectivity-Making

What’s up with the resurgence of Polaroid cameras, Tamagotchis, and re-makes of 90’s rom-com’s in our current-day? The nostalgic longing for the media objects of one’s own childhood may be understood as an act of collective subject-making, in which a generation coheres under the shared experiences of a past media environment. These economies of nostalgia create and reproduce narratives of the past as well as construct an entire generational identity around media technology, in ways, I argue, that are analogous to national cinema’s project of subject-making. As such, my paper draws lines between theories of cinema nationalism, media environments, and childhood educational media by examining a media object from my own past, a 1990s Taiwanese children’s magazine called Little Newton, Jr. In my analysis of Little Newton, Jr., I draw from Brian Larkin’s (and earlier, Friedrich Kittler s) ideas of media as a cultural technique to examine the ways in which children comport, develop, and change themselves in relation to the media forms that surround them in their upbringing. Although the magazine’s primary purpose is help children achieve literacy, I argue that it more so disseminates Taiwanese norms of good behavior and civic responsibility, or, cultural literacy. As such, I examine the ways in which Little Newton, Jr.’s medial and rhetorical strategies show how media associated with childhood upbringing intersects with the language of political and national grooming, a larger project that I embed within the paradigms and socio-cultural aspirations of 1990s Taiwan.

Andrew Kim Northwestern University Anthropology Third Year Biological Memories of Apartheid: Intergenerational Effects of Apartheid-Based Prenatal Stress on Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal Axis, Mental Health, and Birth Outcomes in Soweto, South Africa

In recent decades, researchers have underscored the importance of early life experiences, especially those that occur in utero, as factors that shape a variety of human phenotypes across the lifecourse.

Growing evidence suggests that some of these early life biological effects, such as psychosocial stress, can persist into adulthood and, in women of reproductive age, shape the gestational environment experienced by her offspring, thereby influencing grandoffspring development. This proposed multigenerational pathway of biological memory raises the possibility that an individual’s biological settings reflect not only the experiences of themselves and their mothers, but also of their grandmothers. Stress physiological mechanisms, such as the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and peripheral inflammation, are particularly strong candidates for such multigenerational plasticity to occur. Although researchers have proposed this idea, to date no study has directly tested this possibility in humans. This study will use existing survey data, new data, and sample collection to test the lifecourse and intergenerational effects of early life stress experienced by now young-adult mothers who, as black South Africans, were exposed to discrimination, stress and political upheaval at the end of the apartheid era in Soweto, South Africa. We avail of the longitudinal "Birth to 20" study that first enrolled pregnant women in 1990 and has since followed their children and grandchildren for 28 years.

This study provides a unique opportunity to trace the long-term impacts of early life stress exposure, focusing on both the adult health of the exposed, and the birth outcomes and hypothalamic-pituitaryadrenal function of their unexposed offspring.

Kerby Lynch University of California - Berkeley Geography Second Year In the (After) Life: Black Lesbian Spatialities under the Emergence of Homonationalism

This paper explores the artifacts of a Black lesbian literary archive at the height of intersectional liberation movements (Black, Gay and Feminist). I attempt to spatialize the social dynamics of a postBlack Power era and map narratives of when Black lesbian authors contest the social devaluation of black women’s sexuality in Gay/Feminist movements to assert a poetic of survival (Gumbs 2015). The production of silence around Black women’s sexualities after liberation has allowed for capitalist narratives of progress to take precedence over narratives of racial, sexual and homophobic regimes of violence. Black lesbian poets leave traces, notes and warnings that provide an alternative meaning to black life that has been undertheorized. This project seeks to extend Jasbir Puar’s theory of homonationalism as an institution that refuses to endorse the survivability of the black lesbian, and how it operates as a regime of racialized spatial dispossession. This project aims to tell an alternative historical geography to Bay Area gentrification via Barbara Smith’s Black lesbian reading of space as a reclamation of the despised black body. Queer studies has normalized anti-blackness as a fact of the identity’s ontology, but needs to invest more in empirical study of the ways in which notions of antiblackness disciplines the subject, limits inquiry, and ultimately is complicit in the materiality of Black social death. I strategically study the poetry and literary archive of Black lesbians to interrupt the reproduction of a black queer subjectivity that has not resolved its regimes of black women’s disposability.

Blaque Robinson University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill Sociology Second Year More Than Skin Deep?: An Exploration of Black Students Racial Attitudes

College is often considered consciousness raising experience that might spur changes in how students think about race relations in US society (Syed and Azmitia 2009: 618). Scholars of black racial attitudes have often noted blacks with a college degree or higher are more skeptical of US race relations, more likely to report experiences of prejudice and have a perception that whites have negative intentions towards blacks (Bullock 1972; Dawson 2003; Demo and Hughes 1990; Ellison and Powers 1994; Schuman et al. 1998; Schuman and Hatchett 1974; Sigelman and Welch 1994). While these findings hold across the majority of studies, researchers have neglected to evaluate how the collegiate experience influences the adoption of these racial attitudes. I will use the National Longitudinal Survey of Freshman to answer the following questions: Do the racial attitudes of black students at selective institutions change during their college years? If so, which campus experiences influence this change? In addition, are there school level factors beyond individual experiences that influence black students’ racial attitudes? This longitudinal multilevel analysis represents an innovation in scholarship on racial attitudes. Research on black racial attitudes lacks robust analysis on how attitudes change over time.

Furthermore, there have been little to no investigations on the role of college experiences in predicting racial attitudes. Finally, sociologists have often been concerned with the interactions between individuals and institutions and this multilevel analysis will allow us to observe how these relationships work in the field of racial attitudes.

Mogammad Yaaseen Samuels University of Cape Town Geography Second Year Governing the Tides: The Case of Langebaan's Disappearing Shoreline

The coastal zone is a unique and dynamic interface between land and sea which is under immense threat given coastal demographic and development trends as well as global climate change. The South African coast is highly exposed to sea level rise and its adverse risks, namely storm surges, flooding and coastal erosion. Given global and regional sea level rise and climate projections, these risks are to increase and intensify. In addressing these risks, there is a need to move from a technocratic/scientific approach to one which recognizes uncertainty and complexity through multidisciplinary and cross-scalar interactions amongst stakeholders. Langebaan is an ideal study site in illustrating the threat of compounded risks, namely urban and industrial development in relation to sea level rise and associated risks, which are impacting its shoreline. The aim of this study is to examine governance approaches to addressing and reducing coastal risks in order to build greater adaptive coastal management in Langebaan located in the Western Cape of South Africa. This study will be applying a complex systems theory approach by drawing onto the work of Paul Ciliers and others. A case study approach will also be used. Methodologically, semi-structured interviews as well as a review of grey literature will be undertaken. The presentation will be providing background information to my current Master’s research study, which ultimately seeks to highlight the wickedness of environmental issues such as climate change and the need therefor to be understood and addressed from a holistic and integrated perspective.

Alexander Torres University of California - Berkeley English First Year Julius's Fictionality and the Ambiguity of Postbellum Black Identity

This essay pushes back against the numerous allegorical readings of Charles Chesnutt’s The Conjure Woman by retrieving the characters fictionalities especially Uncle Julius’s fictionality, the former slave who narrates the conjure tales as an object of study. My argument follows Catherine Gallagher’s attempt to retrieve novelistic fictionality for analysis in her 2007 essay The Rise of Fictionality (336), which analyzes the ontological composition of characters, especially with respect to their textuality. In order to analyze Julius’s fictionality, this essay will begin by briefly historizing Chensutt’s use of dialect to unveil how such an apparatus functions in the production of character. I argue that the use of dialect accompanied a disavowal of the dialect from the author, generating a strange separation between the body and voice of black characters. By capitalizing on this construction, Chesnutt jettisons the realist impulses of his epoch and creates a character that is neither mere stereotype nor blatantly individualized. This absence of an overly individualized character becomes painstakingly clear when we watch the first-person narrator attempt to understand Julius. Without third-person omniscience (and narrative techniques like free-indirect style and recorded thoughts), Chesnutt creates Julius’s fictionality through the eyes of the homodiegetic narrator John, which bars us from entering Julius’s interior world (his thoughts, his feelings, his motivations) and creates, for the reader, a distance that further underscores Julius’s incompleteness an incompleteness that has encouraged critics to superimpose allegorical readings onto the stories in order to attribute a more specified African American identity to Julius.

Jordan Victorian University of California - Santa Barbara Feminist Studies Second Year On Non/Monogamy and Black Feminist Thought

This paper explores a black queer feminist approach to the study of non/monogamy, connecting conversations in black feminist thought, black sexuality studies, and consensual nonmonogamy (CNM) studies. Scholarship in CNM studies challenges compulsory monogamy as a system of regulation that favors two-partner intimate relationships, but often elides how monogamy is part of a broader racial project. As such, it offers little challenge to the underlying racial-sexual order and has limited applications in the context of non-white populations. This is why Mimi Schippers reflects that there is not yet a coherent and comprehensive theoretical framework for linking compulsory monogamy and mononormativity to the intersection of gender and racial inequality (2016, 8) despite years of calls to address issues of methodological and epistemic diversity within CNM studies. However, literature on black sexuality complicates operations of consent and compulsion as we consider nonmonogamy beyond a universalized white subject. This paper centers black queer feminist analyses of sexuality to examine how the anti-black racial project enacts forms of compulsory non/monogamy, simultaneous compulsions toward and disruptions of (more legibly) monogamous and heteronormative forms of black intimacy. Areas of analysis include racial-sexual regulation during slavery, the Moynihan Report, and the contemporary crisis of black marriage. I ultimately highlight how black feminist thought offers intersectional, multidimensional analyses of power that help direct discussions of consensual nonmonogamy and black marriage toward a more radical, anti-racist critique of monogamy.

SSRC REFERENCE MATERIALS THE SSRC MISSION: SOCIAL SCIENCE FOR THE PUBLIC GOOD The Social Science Research Council (SSRC) is an independent, international, nonprofit organization founded in 1923. It fosters innovative research, nurtures new generations of social scientists, deepens how inquiry is practiced within and across disciplines, and mobilizes necessary knowledge on important public issues.

The SSRC is guided by the belief that justice, prosperity, and democracy all require better understanding of complex social, cultural, economic, and political processes. We work with practitioners, policymakers, and academic researchers in the social sciences, related professions, and the humanities and natural sciences. We build interdisciplinary and international networks, working with partners around the world to link research to practice and policy, strengthen individual and institutional capacities for learning, and enhance public access to information.

The SSRC approaches its work guided by five basic commitments: 1. Fostering innovation. We work on problems that need new approaches; we act as a catalyst for new thinking. We seek to mobilize the most creative and knowledgeable researchers and to help research institutions be more dynamic. Renewing existing expertise, putting knowledge to work on new problems, and generating novel data and theories are all crucial to advancing social science for the public good.

2. Investing in the future. We ensure the future of knowledge production through nurturing new generations of researchers, enabling practitioners to act on scientific knowledge, enhancing cross-fertilization among intellectual fields, developing capacity where it is most lacking, and facilitating the internationalization of social science.

3. Working internationally and democratically. Better understanding of basic social processes is a resource for improving the lives of all. It should be available to all. Participation in the production of scientific knowledge should also be as broad as possible. We support the internationalization of social science and opportunities for under-represented groups both as matters of equity and as requirements for ensuring that the production of knowledge is informed by different contexts and perspectives.

4. Combining urgency and patience. We bring researchers, practitioners, policymakers, and broader publics together to focus on topics of pressing public importance from health to human rights. But since even the most urgent problems are seldom solved overnight, we must learn even as we act, and we must continually renew existing knowledge.

5. Keeping standards high. Practical action, policy, and debate on major public issues all need to be informed by the best possible knowledge. This is produced by emphasizing scientific quality, engaging important public questions, and ensuring openness to critical analysis. Theory and research can then command the attention of those who approach practical issues with different values or agendas.

SSRC FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES: INTERNATIONAL DISSERTATION RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP (IDRF) http://www.ssrc.org/programs/idrf/ The Mellon International Dissertation Research Fellowship (IDRF) offers nine to twelve months of support to graduate students in the humanities and humanistic social sciences who are enrolled in PhD programs in the United States and conducting dissertation research on non-US topics. Seventy fellowships are awarded annually. Fellowship amounts vary depending on the research plan, with a perfellowship average of $22,000. The fellowship includes participation in an SSRC-funded interdisciplinary workshop upon the completion of IDRF-funded research.

The program is open to graduate students in the humanities and humanistic social sciences—regardless of citizenship—enrolled in PhD programs in the United States. Applicants to the 2019 IDRF competition must complete all PhD requirements except on-site research by the time the fellowship begins or by December 2019, whichever comes first.

The program invites proposals for dissertation research conducted, in whole or in part, outside the United States, on non-US topics. It will consider applications for dissertation research grounded in a single site, informed by broader cross-regional and interdisciplinary perspectives, as well as applications for multi-sited, comparative, and transregional research. Proposals that identify the United States as a case for comparative inquiry are welcome; however, proposals that focus predominantly or exclusively on the United States are not eligible.

Applicants from select disciplines within the humanities (Art History, Architectural History, Classics, Drama/Theater, Film Studies, Literature, Musicology, Performance Studies, Philosophy, Political Theory, and Religion) may request three or more months of funding for international on-site dissertation research in combination with site-specific research in the United States, for a total of nine to twelve months of funding. All other applicants (for instance, those in Anthropology, Geography, History, Political Science, and Sociology, among others) must request nine to twelve months of on-site, sitespecific dissertation research with a minimum of six months of research outside of the United States.

Research within the United States must be site-specific (e.g., at a particular archive) and cannot be at the applicant’s home institution unless that institution has necessary site-specific research holdings.

Please note that the IDRF program supports research only and may not be used for dissertation writeup.

Applicants who have completed significant funded dissertation research in one country by the start of their proposed IDRF research may be ineligible to apply to the IDRF to extend research time in the same country. Eligibility will be at the discretion of the IDRF program, depending on completed research time and funding. The IDRF program expects fellows to remain at their research site(s) for the full nine- to twelve-month funding period. The IDRF program will not support study at foreign universities, conference participation, or dissertation write-up. GETTING TO BARNARD COLLEGE Columbia University and Barnard College are located on the Upper West Side of Manhattan with Columbia between 110th and 120th Streets on Broadway, and Barnard between 116th and 120th. We strongly recommend the use of New York’s extensive and comparatively inexpensive public transportation system.

The fare for public transportation is $2.75, and instructions are provided below. Of course, feel free to also consult Google Maps to guide yourself. Taxis and rideshare services, such as Uber and Lyft, are also available; fare from airports will range from approximately $40-$80 excluding tip and tolls. Your Barnard summer ID must be with you at all times and allows only for access to the residence hall you are residing in and you must show your Barnard summer ID to the Access Attendant to gain entry each time you enter the building.
