Greater Boston Stays Strong Despite Chilly Temperatures By April Provencher Topsfield, MA-Memorial Day weekend has always been the unofficial start to the summer season in New England, but this year Mother Nature had different plans. Despite the cold, wet and windy weekend, entries were almost 500 strong for the Greater Boston Charity Horse Show in Topsfield, MA. Since it’s first year in 2009, this horse show is held to benefit the UpReach Therapeutic riding center in Goffstown, NH. This nonprofit organization was founded in 1992 by Edie Loeb Tomasko. It now consists of 4 full time and 4 part time employees and over 100 volunteers. UpReach aids in the improvement of the lives of emotionally, physically, and psychologically challenged children and adults. The show committee always go above and beyond to make this show very exhibitor friendly, which draws the top horses from the Northeast to compete at this 3 day show. Thursday evening hosts a pizza party which features a “free raffle” where each attendee is given a ticket for a chance to win a prize. These prizes included horse related items and gift cards to tack shops and restaurants. Complimentary coffee and doughnuts were available each morning in the arena. Friday evening offered a catered Barbeque featuring chicken, pulled pork, corn bread, cole slaw and mac & cheese. This was followed by mechanical bull riding, which was enjoyed by spectators as well as those brave enough to step up on the wild ride. The mechanical bull was sponsered by The Parkman Family Foundation. Saturday morning started with the Academy division. Lillian Gilpan of Rockinghorse Farm was gracious enough to volunteer the judging duties for the very popular division which ranged from adults to the beginner’s walk only class. The morning also started with a ring side buffet breakfast for all to enjoy. The Saturday afternoon session featured an ice cream sundae social sponsored by High Tail Acres. Kids of all ages could be seen enjoying the frozen treat even though temps were only in the 50’s. Greater Boston offers classes for Saddlebreds, Morgans and Hackneys as well as open breed classes for adults, junior exhibitors and novice riders. With such a great organization benefitting from a very well run horse show, it’s a great place for spectators and exhibitors to enjoy a sport we love so much. UPREACH THERAPEUTIC RIDING CENTER, INC. 153 Paige Hill Rd, PO Box 335, Goffstown NH 03045 www.upreachtrc.org “where horses help hopes become reality” A 501(c )3 non-profit corporation

Every year many children and adults are diagnosed with physical and emotional disabilities. While conventional therapies do so much to physically heal them, these therapies do not always bring about a feeling of emotional well-being and self-gratification. Physical goals are achieved as the three dimensional movement of the horse provides the sensory input of the precise, repetitive pattern of the normal human walk. Self-esteem and independence are achieved through cause and effect relationships that are built through caring for and riding or driving a horse. Image the sense of freedom and hope that a child in a wheelchair feels while riding on the back of one of these majestic animals, or the sense of trust that is learned by caring for a loving animal so much bigger than themselves. UpReach cannot continue to change lives without generous donations and support from the community and special events such as this show. We invite you to visit us and see first hand how “horses help hopes become reality” Thank you for all your support and good luck.

Dog and Pony Show Hosted By Mid America Saddlebred Horse Club By Kelly Stewart

The Mid America Saddlebred Horse Club hosted an entertaining evening of food, fashion, and shopping, which was kicked off with a wonderful Saddlebred exhibition. This particular event was a fundraiser for the very worthy Canine Companions for Independence, a non-profit organization which was created over 30 years ago. Their purpose is to breed, raise and train service dogs to enhance the lives of those with disabilities. They’ve also recently started another division, Wounded Veterans’ Initiative. These people with disabilities receive these dogs free of charge. In some situations these service dogs can literally be the lifeline for individuals. Mid America was started over 30 years ago. Through the years Mid America has promoted the American Saddlebred through clinics, seminars, barn tours, mall presentations and the annual charity horse show at Longview Horse Park. This year the club decided to think outside the box a little bit. This was an opportunity to raise money for a very worthy charity and gain some promotion for the American Saddlebred to a potentially new audience. Through conversations with club members enthusiasm grew and the “Dog and Pony Show” was created. It was a year long planning process involving several key members on the event committee, Kelly Stewart - Club President, Don Schilling – 1st Vice President, Mary Zion – 2nd Vice President & Treasurer, Lee Allard – Secretary and Melanie Allen – club member. The event was emceed by Fox4 News Meteorologist, Joe Lauria. To help promote the event Fox 4 conducted an interview with Kelly Stewart, Sandy (the dog trainer), and 7 month old puppy in training , “Gabe.” Also on board to help promote the event was 103.7FM, “Better Horses” radio show hosted by Ernie Rodina, who also conducted an interview with Kelly Stewart. The Dog & Pony Show was held on an absolutely picture perfect spring evening on June 7, 2013 at the classy Ritz Charles in Overland Park, Kansas. The accommodations were absolutely perfect for this event. Guests arrived at 6:30pm for cocktails and hor d’eouvres. At 7pm, guests stepped immediately outside the banquet hall to witness a lovely representation of the American Saddlebred. Several local barns participated in this demonstration. Taylor Thompson rode Callaway’s Informed Source, provided by Abby Road Farm, to represent the Academy division. Madison Morrison, who also rides with Abby Road Farm, rode King’s Blackmail showcasing the Western division. Don Schilling, of Burden Schilling Farm, drove Silver Trinket, exhibiting the fine harness division.

Page 32

Dog and Pony Show Hosted By Mid America Saddlebred Horse Club

The grand finale was Christine Douglas atop Admiral Able, owned by Lisa Mullin and in training at Mill Creek Stable, wowing the crowd with the exciting 5 gaits the American Saddlebred is so well known for. After the fun and educational exhibition, guests were invited back inside to shop several local vendors, including artists, jewelry, fashion accessories and bid on silent auction items. Over $3000 was raised for Canine Companions for Independence. As we all know, shopping works up an appetite! The Ritz provided a delicious buffet including a pasta bar, brisket, chicken and most importantly a dessert bar.

The final entertainment for the evening was a fashion show, not only presenting the latest spring styles for humans, but doggie couture as well, provided by Kitty Hays. One good humored gentleman, Baron Link, wore a horse costume to help truly set the tone for the “Dog & Pony Show. He started the show by escorting two young saddlebred riders out, both donning saddleseat riding attire. The models also wore clothing provided by local merchants, Two Chic, Sazzys, Chicos and Gap for Kids. A big kudos to the models; Stacia Gray, Taylor Thompson, Trenady Keeton and Adam Keeton, who ride at Abby Road Farm as well as Morgan Balentine who rides at McCallister Stable and Carly Thompson who just happens to love horses and fashion. The prancing pooches were a big hit also. A special thank you goes out to Shirley Smith, Joe and Melody Balentime, Donna Follick, and Tandra Keeton for sharing your wonderful pooches with us!

New River Valley Horse Show Was a Hit Despite Uncooperative Weather! By Ashley Linkous The New River Valley Horse Show was held at the New River Valley Fair Grounds in Dublin, Thursday, May 23 through Saturday, May 25. Exhibitors who arrived to the fairgrounds on Thursday found a ring that was very deep with mud from recent precipitation in the area. Show manager Alice Martens held a meeting with exhibitors prior to show time to discuss the state of the area, and it was decided to cancel the show for that evening. The show must go on, and go on it did! By Friday night, the arena was back in operable condition. The requirement to qualify for championship classes was lifted, and money from canceled classes from Thursday night was awarded in the respective championships. Classes that didn’t have a championship, like the Novice Roadster Pony, were moved to the beginning of the show Friday, May 24. Friday evening was unseasonably cold for Southwest Virginia, and patrons were found huddling together under blankets to enjoy fierce competition despite the chilly weather. Saturday’s weather proved much nicer. The horse show kicked off on Saturday morning with a selection of saddleseat classes for youth, equitation riders, and amateur owner/trainers. The day continued with sections for hunt seat and western riders. Saturday night’s championship classes brought some nice talent to the fairgrounds. Among the most popular were the Jackpot classes that have become so competitive at the NRV Horse show. This year, Joanna’s Lost took the Roadster to Bike Jackpot Stake for owner/driver Rae Lee Mills. Breezy Nite with Brittany Ritter aboard for Betty Smith bested a field of six to be the Three-Gaited Park Jackpot Stake winner. Burt and Miriam Honaker’s Royal Crest Exotic Stone took the Three-Gaited Jackpot Stake victory pass. Sandra Brown drove Jenna Holland’s Get SetN-Go to the Roadster Pony Jackpot Stake, and the final victory pass of the show was made by Nancy Troutman aboard Rappe’ for Danny and Nancy Troutman as the Five-Gaited Jackpot Stake winner from a field of eight entries. The NRV Horse Show always draws a crowd of Saddlebred enthusiasts and local patrons alike. Lots of local businesses enjoy sponsoring the event, which even offers discounted rates for Spectator Appreciation Night. One spectator from the area said she really enjoyed seeing “some beautiful saddlebreds and their amazing gaits” despite the freezing weather she endured on Friday night. Show Manager Alice Martens wants all the exhibitors to know that she appreciates them very much for working with management when faced with poor ring conditions due to lots of rain.

Oak Hill’s Something to Talk About and Dre’ Fourie win the Juvenile Show Pleasure class for Andre Fourie.

Little Samurai and Emma Townley win the Roadster Pony Under Saddle class for owner Naomi Hess.

Back to back wins for Bill Heizer’s crew: Divilicious with Vicki Williams wins the Adult Show Pleasure class, and The Man Can Tango with Suzanne Heizer wins the ASB Hunter Country Pleasure class.

The “Ridin’ for a Cure” BB&T Relay for Life Charity Horse Show By Ashley Linkous

Royal Crest’s Stone Magic and Ariel Schulte

Bland, VA-The “Ridin’ for a Cure” BB&T Relay for Life Charity Horse Show was held Saturday, April 27 at the Bland County Fairgrounds in Bland, Virginia. The fundraiser had quite the turnout, with Saddlebred enthusiasts from academy all the way through Open 5 Gaited horses. The show attracts horses of all breeds, and the favorite gait of the day may have been “Go As You Please.” The schedule includes classes for academy riders, performance Saddlebreds, mules, miniature horses, speed horses, and walking and racking horses.

An entry from Mountain Trail Stables

The English Halter class may have been the biggest class with 9 entries. Thomas Edison, owned by Tony Miller, impressively channeled his futurity days to take top honors with Matthew Girod leading. Intermission was highlighted by a dog show, and the evening concluded with stock style western and games classes. Many local businesses donated prizes to be raffled and/or funds to help contribute to the success of this show. All proceeds from the show go to Relay for Life and the American Cancer Society.

News Press Release from Happy Valley Farm Friday, June 21, 2013

mane event judges

Happy Valley Farm, home to an expansive American Saddlebred show horse breeding and training operation, tragically lost 35 of 36 horses stabled in the main barn when fire erupted on Thursday evening shortly before dark. Daniel Jenner, one of the farm’s horse trainers, stated that the structure was completely engulfed within 20 minutes. “We were Kim Cowart, Marilyn Macfarlane and Bill Waller will judge the 11th able to get one horse out of an end stall on the back side of the barn annual Mid-America Mane Event Show, October 24-27 (Thursdayadjacent to the indoor arena. It was too hot and smoky to get anywhere Sunday) at the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield. near the main barn aisle.” Tragically lost in the blaze were four stallions that were the backbone of the breeding operation. Included were the prolific homebred stallion, WC Merchant Prince, who won the Three Year Old Fine Harness National Futurity in 1986 and was sire of many great world’s champions, including World’s Grand Champion Fine Harness and World’s Grand Champion Three-Gaited CH A Sweet Treat, CH Marching Orders, and CH Rejoice among many others. Also perishing were RWC I’m The Prince - sire of twice World’s Grand Champion Three-Gaited CH Grande Gil. The black stallion, WC Harlem’s Friendly Conversation, sire of World’s Champions Kalarama’s Delightful and With A Friend, and finally a stallion son of I’m The Prince, Magical Me. Show horses that perished included WC With A Friend, RWC So Persuasive, I Insist, as well as a number of promising prospects including two full brothers to WC Grande Gill, I’m Grande and Grande Prince; a Junior prospect by Harlem’s Friendly Conversation, I’ll Just Say, who was being readied for competition at the Kentucky State Fair World’s Championship; Such Magic, daughter of Such Sweet Memories and Little Soul, daughter of In My Soul. The cause of the fire is still under investigation by authorities, but foul play is not suspected. The colt barn and broodmare barn were not affected by the blaze. Nearly 25 foals have been born in 2013 and they, together with almost 100 prospects and broodmares, will be the future of Happy Valley.

Good Hands, Pleasure Olympics, Hackney Youth Finals Return Three national finals programs continue at Mane Event: returning for the fifth year is the National Horse Show “Good Hands” Finals, part of the saddle seat equitation triple crown; the National Pleasure Equitation Olympics Finals, separate competitions for riders 13 years and under and riders 14 through 17 years that is sponsored by Illinois American Saddlebred Pleasure Horse Association; and the Hackney Youth Medallion Finals comprised of six classes for which competitors qualify by placing in an official AHHS-sanctioned Youth Medallion class. Mane Event also offers an expansive class list with excellent options for amateurs showing performance and pleasure horses, and boasts ideal facilities for showing young horses. The State Fairgrounds facilities are totally “horse-friendly” and widely recognized as the country’s best show facilities. Horsemen especially like them in the fall because ALL stabling is in enclosed barns convenient to the Coliseum plus there are three warm-up rings – two indoors and a huge covered arena that includes a 50-ft. round pen – all next to the in-gate and available 24/7. Everyone likes showing in the Coliseum’s banked oval arena with its excellent footing.

Understanding that sociability is part of producing a show that is fun for all exhibitors, organizers are planning a new (second) party to bring everyone together on Friday night. For years, exhibitors have Marion “Bit” Hutcheson, owner, and the entire Happy Valley staff raved about Mane Event’s Saturday night exhibitor party, considered would like to express their deepest appreciation for your condolences. by many to be the best on the show circuit with multiple catered gourmet food stations (including the famous Lobster Bisque) and no long waiting lines. show ring times Rep

Blowing Rock Charity Horse Show Celebrates 90 Years By Ashley Linkous Blowing Rock, NC-Blowing Rock Charity Horse Show was held Thursday, June 6 through Sunday, June 9 at the Blowing Rock Equestrian Preserve in Blowing Rock, North Carolina. Thursday began with a rain delay. Management made the decision for qualifying to be optional, due to dense fog and wet conditions. Show attire was optional as well, and exhibitors were seen in blue jeans, rain jackets, and ball caps more frequently than in riding habits. By Saturday and Sunday the weather cleared and the sun shined bright for the academy and stake classes. Hospitality abounded during the horse show. Several gift cards, a picture from show photographer Sandra Hall, and tickets to the local attraction Tweetsie Railroad were all auctioned off in free raffles. Breakfast was provided each day, and after each session lunch, snacks, and beverages were available. One afternoon’s celebration was a 90thparty for the horse show, complete with delicious birthday cake and party favors. Sunday morning’s Championship Brunch featured shrimp and grits, and guest of honor Mr. Ray Cloninger. The long time show manager will be retiring this year. He will be missed by exhibitors and show staff alike. Another notable event from the week was Saturday’s last class –Trainers Equitation. Four brave entries made the gate call. Andre Fourie quickly got the crowd’s attention with his arms up, elbows out, and sitting his bold mount’s big trot. Right before the reverse, Midge Hunt pulled her steed into center ring and quickly dismounted for a timeout. Her team rushed in to provide her with a chair to sit in, some fanning, and a much needed sip of water. Once rested up, Midge remounted and the class continued. A workout was announced: execute a serpentine down the box seat side, drop stirrups at the top of the turn, and continue trotting down the grandstand side back to the lineup. Rebekah Cloninger, Midge Hunt, and Caroline Walker gracefully executed the pattern. Andre Fouire, however, was caught with only one iron dropped. As results were tabulated, Andre’s team was busy reaching in to pin a blue ribbon on his bridle. He paraded proudly with his ribbon, though ultimately Midge Hunt was determined to have the winning ride. These memories and many more were made this year at the 90th Annual Blowing Rock Charity Horse Show. Southern charm and the beautiful scenery of Blowing Rock, North Carolina make it impossible not to enjoy, and there are surely many more memories to be made!

Horses Showing for B Points Have 6 New Classes of Their Own New are classes open only to horses declared for B season trophy points. “We want our exhibitors showing B to have the thrill of winning and taking a victory pass, so this year we’ve given them six classes of their own,” said Show Manager Joy Meierhans. “Horses declared for A points are not eligible for these six new B-only classes, but B-declared horses may also show in any other Signature class for which they qualify.” Three of the new B-only classes are in Show Pleasure Three Gaited – Adult, Junior Exhibitor and Championship, and three are in Country Pleasure Three Gaited – Adult, Junior Exhibitor and Championship.
