VITALIX vs. CAKE
When it comes to supplementing your cattle, efficiency, nutrition, and cost-effectiveness matter. Unlike cake, Vitalix® tubs are available to your cattle 24/7, ensuring consistent intake and optimal nutrition, while saving you time, labor, and expenses.
The Hidden Cost of Cake
Before sticking with cake, consider these questions:
Time&Labor: How much time do you spend feeding cake every day, all winter?
Efficiency:Could your time be better spent on more productive tasks?
FuelCosts:How much does it cost to drive a vehicle across your operation daily?
EquipmentDamage:How much wear and tear does your vehicle endure from feeding?
UnequalConsumption: Are all your cows getting equal portions, or do dominant cows take more?
FeedLoss: How much cake is wasted from fines, stepping, or being pushed into mud and snow?
EquipmentExpenses: What do you spend annually on cake feeders and maintenance?
NutritionalGaps: Does cake provide all the vitamins, minerals, and nutrients your herd needs?
Digestibility:Are there any enzymes in cake to enhance forage utilization?
Why Choose Vitalix?
Convenient&Consistent: No daily labor—tubs provide a continuous supplement source.
ImprovedFeedEfficiency: Research-based additives improve forage digestion and utilization.
Cost-Effective:Less waste, fewer equipment expenses, and lower fuel costs.
Nutrient-Rich: Provides essential vitamins, minerals, and bioavailable trace elements.
EqualAccess: Ensures every animal gets its fair share, reducing herd competition.
TheBottomLine
When you compare the true costs of feeding cake to the benefits of using Vitalix® tubs, the choice is clear—you save time, money, and resources while improving herd health and performance.
Speciality Ingredients & Additives
Vitalix VitaShield Vitamin Package
Vitamins are essential to the health and performance of your herd. Vitalix® uses protected vitamin sources to ensure that your animals are receiving the best quality vitamin.
The protected source provides greater resistance for decreasing the integrity of the vitamins in the tub cooking process and in the rumen.
50 years ago, Zinpro® pioneered the science of organic trace minerals by creating the industry’s first and only Zinpro® Performance Minerals. Utilizing a unique pathway for advanced absorption, Zinpro® Performance Minerals provide superior uptake and utilization for greater animal wellbeing and productivity.
Every Vitalix tub includes a Microbial Activator which is powered by Zinpro® COPRO®. Including a Microbial Activator feeds the microbes in the rumen to increase efficiency of fiber digestion and boosts Vitamin B12 production.
Zinpro® Availa® Zn (zinc amino acid complex) is a nutritional feed ingredient that contains organic zinc. The trace mineral zinc is required by animals for numerous functions, including: immunity, reproduction, skin and hoof integrity, muscle development, and milk production.
Vitalix also includes Zinpro® Availa® 4 in a wide array of tubs. Zinpro® Availa® 4 is a nutritional feed ingredient that contains a combination of organic zinc, manganese, copper and cobalt.
Diamond V Natural Immune Support
Diamond V® provides natural, fermentation-based feed ingredients, used in all classes of livestock feed. Rather than a single compound, Diamond V® products are composed of numerous beneficial metabolites that include mannans and beta glucans but also proteins, peptides, antioxidants, phytosterols, organic acids and nucleotides.
Diamond V® natural immune support products help optimize animal health, performance and digestive function. Their postbiotics work naturally with the biology of the animal to maintain immune strength and promote digestive health.
Diamond V® XPC Ultra® is included in Vitalix’s Proprietary Vitamin Premix which is used in every tub. Vitalix also uses full levels of Diamond V® products – NaturSafe® and XPC Ultra® in a variety of other tubs.

Fly Control Technologies
Vitalix provides options for controlling and repelling the fly population. Vitalix proudly offers Central Life Science’s feed through fly control products, Altosid® IGR and ClariFly ® Larvicide in multiple tub options. Vitalix also offers BioImpact Garlic in a variety of tub options.
Altosid® IGR and ClariFly® Larvicide are both fed in an animal’s feed to stop flies in their larval stage.
Altosid® IGR is an Insect Growth Regulator (IGR) that passes through the animal and into the manure, where horn flies lay their eggs. It breaks the horn fly life cycle by preventing pupae from developing into biting adult flies. While there are many types of flies, the horn fly presents the biggest challenge to livestock on pasture.
ClariFly® Larvicide is another option for feed through fly control offered by Vitalix. Rather than just horn flies, ClariFly® is also effective at preventing house flies, stable flies and face flies. The active ingredient passes through the digestive system of the animal, where it sits in fresh manure and interrupts the life cycle of the noted flies.
Feeding your fly control through Vitalix tubs eliminates expense, labor and stress on your cattle associated with other fly control methods. See below for a complete list of Vitalix tubs with Fly Control from Central Life Science’s:
As calves move on from their mothers, the right mineral supplementation can help overcome the negative effects of stress and support the immune system, resulting in lower morbidity. Feeding Zinpro® Availa® 4 has been shown to reducemorbidityby20%

Understanding MOS in Livestock Nutrition
Vitalix® was the first company to introduce MOS in low-moisture cooked tubs before the 2007 calving season. Today, we continue to set the standard for effective, consistent, and waste-free MOS supplementation.
What is MOS?
Mannan-Oligosaccharides (MOS) is an advanced direct-fed microbial (probiotic) supplement derived from Saccharomyces cerevisiae (live yeast). MOS is highly effective in supporting gut health and immune function in livestock.
HowItWorks:
MOS acts like a magnet for harmful bacteria such as E. coli and Salmonella, binding to them and preventing their attachment to the gut lining. This natural defense mechanism reduces scours and digestive issues, leading to healthier animals and improved growth rates.
MOS enhances the immune response—especially in recently vaccinated cattle— helping cows transfer more antibodies to their calves via colostrum.
The Investment that Pays Off
Compare the cost of MOS supplementation to the expense of treating sick calves and lost performance due to poor health. The savings and long-term benefits of healthier, stronger cattle make Vitalix® tubs with MOS an essential investment for any operation.

VITALIX® CONDITIONER #1 TUB PROVEN TO IMPROVE RUMEN DIGESTION OF PRAIRIE GRASS HAY
Introduction: Numerous field trial results with Vitalix® Conditioner #1 tubs have demonstrated that cattle more effectively utilize forages when consuming this supplement. During 2004, Vitalix® and SDK Laboratories, Hutchinson, Kan., performed a series of in vitro rumen digestibility experiments to further substantiate these field trial results.
Procedures:Two rumen fistulated steers were fed an all-prairie hay diet for 10 days in order to condition the rumen and to serve as donor animals for an in vitro/artificial rumen digestibility trial at SDK Laboratories. The same prairie hay was ground and analyzed for nutrient (Proximate Analysis) content prior to the rumen digestibility experiments.
Rumen inoculum was prepared by combining rumen fluid with rumen buffer solution. Ground prairie hay samples were placed in ANKOM filter bags and combined with rumen fluidbuffer inoculum in rumen fermentation flasks. A total of 8 hay samples were placed into each of 2 rumen fermentation flasks. To 1 of these flasks was added the appropriate amount of Vitalix® Conditioner #1 supplement to measure the impact of Vitalix® on hay digestion as compared to the unsupplemented hay Control flask.
Both fermentor flasks were then placed in an ANKOM-Daisy Incubator for 48 hours and were maintained at 39.5 degrees C under constant agitation. At the end of 48 hours, the bags were removed from the fermentation flasks, rinsed and dried for dry matter digestibility determination. Samples were then further analyzed for Neutral Detergent Fiber (NDF) analysis and NDF-fiber digestibility determination.
This procedure was repeated twice in order to generate a total of 16 hay sample digestion replicates per treatment (16 Vitalix® + 16 Control) for determining final dry matter and fiber digestibility results.
VITALIX® CONDITIONER #1 TUB PROVEN TO IMPROVE RUMEN DIGESTION OF PRAIRIE GRASS HAY
Results:Prairie hay Proximate Analysis results can be found in the table to follow. Crude Protein content of the prairie hay was fairly low (5.5%), while the sample was slightly over 50% in Total Digestible Nutrients (TDN). Relative Feed Value (RFV) for this hay sample was determined to be 75.
In Vitro rumen fermentation results for total dry matter and fiber digestibility are presented in the table below.
Vitalix® Conditioner #1 supplement increased total dry matter digestibility (IVTDMD) of prairie hay from 65.8% to 70.3%. This increase translated to a 7% improvement in hay digestion in the rumen. Fiber digestion (NDFD) was increased from 50.6% (Control) to 57.7% (Vitalix® #1), which translated to a 14% improvement in rumen fiber digestion due to Vitalix® Conditioner #1.
Both the total dry matter and NDF-fiber digestibility results for the prairie hay utilized in these experiments were quite high considering their TDN & NDF analyzed concentrations (51% and 64%, respectively). Yet, due to the addition of Vitalix® Conditioner #1, the rumen digestibility coefficients for dry matter and fiber were still markedly improved.
Conclusions: Consistent with what has been reported to Vitalix® in the past, these rumen digestibility experiments conducted by SDK Laboratories further substantiate that feeding Conditioner #1 tubs to cattle increases their ability to utilize medium quality roughages such as prairie hay.

Year Conducted: 2000
State University Research Trials Demonstrate All-Beet Molasses Tubs Are The Best For Range Cattle
Vitalix® dealers or their producer customers have frequently commented that their cattle perform better on tubs made from beet molasses than those made from cane molasses.
Based on research performed at two different recent Kansas State University locations, this observation is correct, and Vitalix® would like to share this information with you.
In 2000, Greenwood and others at KSU-Manhattan reported on digestion trials performed with fistulated steers comparing cooked molasses tubs made with either beet molasses, cane molasses or beet-concentrated separator byproduct (CSB). Prairie hay + tubs were hand-fed in a digestion trial model to determine the impact of supplementing tubs at .80 lb/hd/day, with the same nutrient profiles, but made with different molasses (cane versus beet versus CSB).
Digestibility of dry matter, fiber and protein from prairie hay, from this digestion trial are presented in the table to the right for beet versus cane versus CSB cooked molasses tubs with the same nutrient profile. Resulting rumen volatile fatty acids produced are also included.
Digestion of prairie hay was improved to a slightly greater extent (additional +3% to +5% improvements) by tubs made from all-beet molasses versus all-cane or CSB tubs. However, the extent of rumen volatile fatty acid (VFA) increase due to beet molasses tub supplementation of prairie hay (+15%) was more than twice that of cane molasses tubs (+6%), with CSB tubs being intermediate.
In the real world, cooked molasses tubs are capable of improving digestion of forages only if they are consumed voluntarily at target levels by cattle. Vitalix® has performed tub voluntary consumption trials with the cooperation of Kansas State University at Ft Hays.
During 2003 and 2004, Harmoney and Goodall conducted 5 pasture-grazing trials that utilized both steers and cows comparing tubs with the same nutrient profile as Vitalix® #4, but made from either cane or beet molasses. Steer trials compared cane versus beet tub voluntary consumption on separate pastures, while cow trials allowed for both cane and beet tubs to be selectively consumed by cows on the same pastures.
Kansas State University Research Trials Demonstrate All-Beet Molasses Tubs Are The Best For
Range Cattle
Free-choice consumption of beet molasses tubs was found to be consistently higher than consumption of cane molasses tubs in all 5 trials. In 4 of the 5 trials beet and cane tubs were determined to have the same hardness, while in only 1 of the trials the beet tubs were less hard than cane tubs. The 5-trial average consumption for beet tubs was .95 lb/hd/day while cane tubs averaged .30 lb/hd/day. Target consumption for these tubs for steers and cows based on Vitalix® #4 tub recommendations should be between .75 lb - 1.0 lb per day.
Based on the 5 trials conducted at KSU-Ft Hays, beet molasses tubs supplied essential nutrients to pasture cattle at targeted levels (on a free-choice basis), while the cane tubs did not. These consumption differences were not due to differences in tub hardness, but rather were the result of differences due to higher palatability of beet molasses tubs.
