BEHIND THE SCENES

Letter From the Editors:

Now that the first quarter is over and our hard work has all paid off to for our progress grades, we tend to get lazier throughout the year— which shouldn’t be the case. Every year, GPA’s are at their highest in the first quarter because we strive to do well the first couple months of school. Students feel they don’t have to try as hard anymore because their grades are “in the bag.” This couldn’t be any more false. The dreaded second quarter is the most crucial to your first semester grades: new notes, lessons, quizzes, information is set before you. During second quarter, students tend to drag their feet through the halls and sleep during class. Every quarter is equally important! Second quarter gets the worst rep. First quarter everyone is excited to see their friends and come to school energized; third quarter everyone has had Christmas break to refresh themselves; and fourth quarter everyone is looking forward to summer. Now is the time to push through all the rough days, keep your eyes open in class, and strive for greatness. Our football team is playing hard in districts, basketball is well on its way, and our school band is on fire this year—our school spirit should be at an all-time high! Instead of trying to pick through everything to find the negatives of being at school, search for the positives in everything! School goes by so much faster if you try to make every day the best yet. Every day is another day to smile, laugh, and try new things.

hunting season

Hunting season is here everybody! If you’re planning on getting out in the woods you better be prepared to take home some game. When you’re hunting, you have to know where your prey is at, hopefully by now you have your food plot out, and your aim perfected. What’s the point of hunting if you can’t hit what you’re aiming at? You also have to know the law, the last thing you want is finding out the hard way why not to hunt illegally. Conservation agents are all over our woods and their job is to catch you doing something illegal. If you get caught hunting without a permit you can get fined up to $235. Hunting out of season you can get a fine as much as $167. Visit Missouri Department of Conservation for a list of all the fines. They’re really strict about protecting our wildlife, and odds are they won’t go easy on you. There is a little more to hunting than just picking up a gun and walking around in the woods. When still hunting you have to make sure you’re moving slow enough that you can still hear what is going on around you, and that can be a little hard. One trick to help is set a timer on your watch for 5 minutes or so to stand still before moving again. When in a stand prior to open season make sure you have good 360 degree view of the area you’re hunting in. You’ll want to trim down any tree branches or bush-

tim linn

es that may be obstructing your view. Also make sure you can move freely but securely in your stand to get the best shot possible without making noise or falling out. Animals have terrific senses. If you make any unusual sounds, like snapping a stick, it may not seem like much to you but if a deer is close it may stop immediately and look in your direction. If you stay still enough and it doesn’t smell you, it might go back to what it was doing before. If you’re hunting in a brushy area and drop an animal in the distance make sure you make a mental note of its location especially if you have to take your eyes off it. This may save you some tracking time. Some really good hunting locations can be found at the bottom of deep canyons or valleys that don’t have any roads or trails leading down. Most hunters will avoid these rich hunting holes because they know if they shoot any decent size game they will have to haul it out, and that can be tough. However since most hunters don’t bother venturing down, a lot of good game will usually flock to them, making these hard to get to holes a gold mine. If you watch hunting on TV you know the hunters will poke at their catch with the muzzle of their gun. That’s dumb if the animal is still alive it might jump up and you won’t be able to take action. Instead toss a small rock or stick at it just in case, and if it’s eyes are closed when you walk up, it might be playing dead.

6

When following a blood trail you can be very intent on watching just the ground, but don’t forget that low branches and trees can lead the trail as well. Also you never want to hang a carcass any less than three feet off the ground because other animals can quickly devour your fresh, hard earned meat. One thing about bow hunting is it can add months to your hunting season. Given the fact that you need at least a little bit of skill to drop a deer with a bow compared to a rifle. It can take some practice but it’s well worth the extra hunting time. When you’re out there hunting don’t sacrifice accuracy for speed, you can turn up your bow’s draw weight but it’s accuracy might suffer. If you’re more accurate with it down, leave it down. Also shooting a lighter arrow will definitely give you more speed but less stopping power, so don’t go to extremes with light weight. A little trick that helps with aiming, even though it may not seem like it, is instead of holding the pin right on your target let it float and slowly but steadily squeeze the trigger. Finally make your first shot count whether you’re using a rifle or bow. Most of the time that buck won’t give you a second shot, and practice always pays off.

job interviews Get a job! Already have one? Good for you, why are you reading this? This article is to inform people how to look good at a job interview. If you want to know, then stick around. I will teaching you how to elevate your style game and trick people into thinking you’re a decent person based on your exterior.

travis kelley

First of all let me start out by saying not all job interviews are created equal. Why would you wear a black three-piece suit with peak lapels to get a job working on a dock? You wouldn’t. I will go over two separate styles of interview garb, formal and casual. How far you take it from there depends on your soon-to-be job and your personality. Remember, what you’re about to read is only about the basics. Every building needs a solid foundation and so too does the style of man. We shall start with arguably the most important part of one’s outfit; the shoes. As far as formal goes there are a few rules to follow. Wear a black plain or cap toe oxford with either a rounded or chisel toe. You should also take the time to polish your shoes. Never wear those gross looking square toes shoes that you stole from you older brother’s closet. Just don’t, ever. Casual interviews have more options. You can wear derbies, loafers, or dress boots. Whether or not they are brogue is up to you, just make sure they match your belt. Building up from there we have the outside of the body. If the interview is formal you will wear a dark suit, black or charcoal. Always remember a suit is a pair of pants and a jacket that are identical, not just the color but the fabric and the brand. You will buy a suit jacket and pants together as one. All you need is a single breasted jacket with two to three buttons. If you don’t know already you DON’T BUTTON THE BOTTOM BUTTON. With three buttons you always button the middle, sometimes button the top, and never button the bottom. Notch lapels are your best bet and if you wear a pocket

square. If you wear a pocket square, only use a square fold. For the casual side of the spectrum you, again you have more options. You can wear a blazer or a sport coat (they are different things) with matching pants. The pants should be khaki or grey, a pair of dark jeans will work sometimes. Your jacket should not be boastful colors like salmon, light blue, or white. Whatever you do please make sure your socks match your pants not your shoes. Now we move on to the inside layer. It is a given that you will be wearing a button up shirt with a tie. For the formal get up, wear a plain color shirt with no pattern. White or a blue is the way to go. Make sure you have on a solid or conservative tie, no flashy or power ties. The casual shirt and tie are more lenient. Patterned shirts are acceptable and you’ll have a wider range of color to choose from depending on the jacket and pants you have. The tie has to match the shirt and can have some pattern but you still shouldn’t wear a very bright one. Whichever way

7

you dress, formal or casual, your shirt sleeves should stick out ¼ to ½ of an inch from your jacket sleeves. Moving on we get to the part that’s not clothes. At a formal interview your hair should be recently cut and, if you have one, your beard cleanly shaven. With the casual interview your hair cut should still have a nice look to it and your beard should be neat and trimmed. Make sure that your nails are cut. It should go without saying that you should shower and brush your teeth before you go. Put on deodorant and do not bathe in cologne. You can chew gum before your interview but not during it. Now that you have the basics of looking good for people you’re trying to impress, go out and get that new job! Men’s Warehouse will be visiting Mrs. Mitchell’s Marketing Classes on November 12 presenting “Dress for Success.” If anyone is interested in attending, sign up in Mrs. Mitchell’s room.

Like most great movies, there’s a twist in this one. I’m not talking about one of those corny twists where you can tell what it’s going to be; I’m talking about a serious twist here. If you want to see a great Horror movie that scares you more than anything you’ve ever seen, I’d advise you to NOT see this movie. I personally liked it, but I thought of it as more of a comedy than a scary movie. When you watch the movie, you’ll understand what’s going on more. Now it’s time to get into some gory (not really) details! (Although, you do see a naked grandma in it about two times!) In the beginning of the movie, you’ll realize that this movie really isn’t like a lot of other scary movies. This movie looks like a documentary because it’s filmed from the point of view of the kids (Tyler and Becca). If you’re one of those people that are really into horror movies then you’ll know that the movies that are usually filmed like a documentary are the Paranormal Activity ones. When the camera turns on at first it’s the mother talking about her children going to stay with their grandparents. She explains that her daughter (Becca) wants to video tape their adventure when they stay there. Throughout the movie you’ll experience some scares, but really they should be considered more like “Cheap Thrills”. This movie is also supposed to have some kind of story line to it, or reason that Becca is wanting to videotape and interview her grandparents.

cret, and it turned out to be something really disgusting. You might notice that there’s a certain time of the night that the children aren’t allowed out of their room. This does have a reason behind it, a good one at that. Throughout the movie, the grandparents start acting a lot more suspicious. The children hear strange things outside their bedroom at night, and then in the morning the When they arrive at their grandparents act like nothing ever hapgrandparents’ house they are given pened. some rules, which was when things started getting weird. There was a When these certain things scene where both of the kids played occur, Tyler is really suspicious but “Hide & Seek” under the house, but inBecca is convinced that the grandparstead of it just being them two playing, ents only act this way because they’re the grandma joined in. Another incident old. The very last time that the children that happened was the boy wanted to skype with their mother is when things know what was in the shed. Later on the start getting ugly. to come and get them because their grandma and grandpa have been acting up. The mother continuously tells them to just calm down and that they should be fine. When the children bring the computer over to show their mom the grandparents outside talking, the mom drops a horrific discovery on them. That’s when we find out that those people are NOT the children’s grandparents. Now that Tyler and Becca know that they’re in danger, it’s a whole new story. Becca eventually figures out why the children weren’t allowed downstairs because that’s where she finds her actual grandparents dead. The movie ends pretty sad, but I won’t spoil too much for you! So have fun with all of the plot twists!

monday blues jarred bush

Does the start of your work/ week trigger overwhelming feelings of anxiety, sadness, or stress? Do you lack passion and motivation on Monday morning? Are you sluggish or tense? If you’re nodding affirmatively, you might have a case of the Monday Blues. Let’s get over those Monday blues; don’t live for the weekend, don’t slack on Fridays, and don’t sleep in on the weekend. The ‘Monday Blues’ describe a set of negative emotions that many people get at the beginning of the work week if they’re not happy at work. But they can be much more than just a passing tiredness; they are often a serious warning sign that something is not right at work. As it turns out, your case of the Monday blues can have a negative impact on your performance and productivity, as well as on the people around you. After a long, fun weekend, you may find waking up on Monday morning difficult. In a rush to be on time, you’re tripping out of bed to make coffee, stumbling into work clothes as the realization hits you that it’s Monday again. Maybe you stay home with your kid or go to school, but you still find yourself dreading Mondays. Don’t slack on Fridays, go that extra mile on Friday, so Monday you can have time for yourself or get right to work. On Friday afternoon, if you’re in a rush to get out of school or work, you might leave some loose ends undone. study! Some subjects may make you want to pull your hair out and cry, but try to make it fun. People enjoy learning about things that amuse them, more than things that abuse them! These are just a few tips that can save your grade on the next test. Allowing yourself more time to study is the main thing that you should focus on. It can just be boring, which we could all agree on, but you can’t pass life with that friend who sends you all the work. So, try some of the tips, and see how they work out for you. They might not all be for you, but some of them may improve your studying skills, and more importantly, save your progress report.

For the participants in these interviews you already know which one is your “ex.” Are you happy with their responses? Angry? Maybe surprised? Do you even care is the real question? From the looks of things some of the people in these interviews seem to care at least a little bit. Some of them seem to hold a grudge against one another for something that they did or something that they wouldn’t do. Here’s who was with who: Boy 1’s ex: Girl 3, Boy 2’s ex: Girl 1, Boy 3 ex: Girl 4, Boy 4’s ex: Girl 5 , Boy 5’s ex: Girl 2 Did you guess it right? Are you surprised? Do the questions and the answers match up to you? Well it seems to me that Boy 5 and Girl 2 have some different views on things. It seems the same with most of these past relationships. All these relationships have different points of views on what happened. I leave you with one question, which one of them is telling the truth and what was the actual reason these relationships did not work out?

Throughout school he played football, participated in sport shooting on the weekends, and worked his way up to be an honorable Eagle Scout. The football star was convinced in his first 2 years of high school that he would be joining the military, but later on got the inspiration to be a high school history teacher.

The young historian is the kind who seeks adventure in the great outdoors. In his free time he loves to hang out with his friends. He and his pals take adventurous hikes, calming kayak rides, and backpacking through the woods. Mr. Dougherty also is a sport fanatic.
