BEHIND THE SCENES

Letter From the Editors: Change is inevitable.

Whether it is getting a new pet or saying goodbye to a friend, there are some things in life that don’t last forever. For some people change is easy—something they look forward to. Routine is boring and repetitive. For others, change is hard. Routine is stable and comforting. But the truth is, change is the only real constant in our lives. Life is not meant to be lived in your comfort zone. Try to think of the last time you did something memorable. Was it easy for you? Were you nervous? Anxious? Excited? Exactly. You have to step outside of your comfort zone to do something remarkable. Think of that girl or guy you like, but you don’t know if they like you, too. The only way to really find out is if you ask them. But, you’re scared. You don’t want to be rejected. You don’t want to look stupid or desperate. It’s easier for you to stay in the shadows and think about what could happen. But it only makes you miserable. For anything to happen, you must step outside your comfort zone and confront them. We challenge you to not be overcome by your fears. Instead, conquer them. “Sometimes all you need is twenty seconds of insane courage, and I promise you, something great will come of it.” –We Bought a Zoo

wolves baseball stone woodward

As the winter sports of basketball and wrestling come to a close, we are welcomed with the warm promise of spring and the exciting potential of a great baseball season, because with spring comes flowers, fishing, warmer weather, cooler attitudes, and the greatest of all: baseball season. Last year, Reeds Spring’s baseball team finished the season with an overall record of 13-4. A pretty good season to say the least; even though the team has graduated a lot of seniors, 8 to be exact, they still have a lot of potential in their lineup. They still plan to hit the baseball diamond with the same intensity and heart as previous seasons before, and plan to use their small ball strategy to their advantage.

because after graduating so many players, the morale of the team could have dropped and these new faces bring much appreciated hope. Hope not just for this year, but for years to come, and the team could not ask for anything better. Even if the season does not turn out as the players and the people hope it will, the team and the coaches will prepare for anything; the Wolves have been notorious for being tough, and able to pull through the bad times in order to get to the better ones. And that is what baseball is about: pulling through the rough stuff to get to the good stuff. Baseball is about the heart, the muscle, the ability to pull through the mud and dirt, and the grind; coming out to the other side stronger. Not many teams can say that they can go through the grind and not break, but the wolves can say they can. They have seen bad times throughout the years and they have not thrown in the towel.

Although two-thirds of their starting outfield and three-fifths of their starting infield has graduated, the pace of the Wolves has not slowed. As the beginning of the season fast approaches, the team takes to their offseason practice with the potential of a great Year after year the Wolves come back to season in their eyes. not only face more diverse opponents, but As the Wolves’ offseason continues, there tougher competition during the season. are many new faces that show up to prac- They hold their own their own, though, tice, and along with those new faces come through the season and they are excited the possibilities of new starting infielders for more games and warmer weather. sports, there is sure to be a lot of new faces in the stands during the baseball games. After all, the Wolves are driven to not only perform better, but to succeed farther than the previous Wolves’ baseball seasons. There is a lot of anticipation from the community and the players, and hopefully with the great anticipation there comes the support and help of the community of Reeds Spring. We are just one big team, with the goal of making our city proud and memorable to others. The Wolves and the community want to set an example to never give up and to always have a team to trust and lean on in hard times and in good times; that’s not only what baseball is about, but it is also what life is about. This upcoming season promises excitement and great possibilities, so be sure to come out and enjoy some great weather, and great baseball!

march madness abby williams

As all basketball fans and friends of basketball fans know, March is an extremely crucial month in the world of college basketball. The title “March Madness” makes its point because it is literally a month full of nothing but madness in the world of basketball. It’s said that the first day of March Madness is one of the most popular days out of the whole year for adults to call in to work sick. What seems to be the most important event is the 2015 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament that starts on March 17th. It will be ongoing until it wraps up with a new championship team on April 6th. The schedule for the tournament is as follows:

Teams all across the nation are working non-stop to prepare for the championship tournaments to come. Top teams like Duke, Kentucky, and more are expected to be ready to give it all they’ve got this month. Only one team will end their season with a win and take home a first place trophy. Who will it be? Experts and enthusiasts can make their predictions all they want, but anything could happen; that just adds to the madness of it all. It’s all about the rivalries, the lines ups, and the outcomes.

Final Four: April 4th

Although the division I tournament is the most popular and anticipated event in March Madness, there’s other parts of the college basketball world that wrap up their seasons this month. These include women’s basketball, men’s division II, and more. March marks the end of basketball season for teams and leagues across the nation, and everyone wants to know who will come out on top at the end of it all.

Championship Game: April 6th

First Four: March 17th – 18th Second/Third Rounds: March 19th – 22nd Elite Eight: March 26th – 29th

7

Last year, a team not far from us took home a championship title. From Springfield, Drury University’s men’s basketball team took first place with twenty-three straight wins in the 2014 NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball Championship. It was an exciting time for our local community and we were all very proud, but also incredibly shocked that such a small team from the Ozarks could come out on top. So who will it be this year? That’s what basketball fans across the nation want to know, are making bets on, and are losing sleep over. Only time will tell, and while some will be thrilled with the new champion, many will be extremely upset and disappointed. You can find all the up to date news and information on www. ncaa.com/march-madness and on ESPN. Also, keep an eye out on the popular Snapchat app because rumor has it that all the March Madness highlights will be posted on there by fans and professionals!

friendship expiration dates courtney bullis A sad reality: like romantic relationships, friendships aren’t always forever. From borrowing each other things and going out together, all those secrets and the gossip you share, it is still possible that your friendship may come to an end. There are times when you’re the one that feels the break-up is necessary, and it is actually something many people go through. Sometimes it is easy, and others are not-so-much.

Give and explanation and address the situation or issue. Avoid running away or hiding. This isn’t a game; it is actually more serious than many people consider it to be. Think about it; you don’t want to be hypocritical, so be sure you aren’t just dropping them. This can be hard because we do often have a mindset of they-will-I-will-too, and this is a very wrong approach. At the very least you should attempt to explain yourself, don’t just disappear. You never know, In the case that your situation is they might be completely oblivious to what easy, it may be that you and your friend both is going on. Keep the situation only between the two of you. Remember, whatever happens between you and your friend should ONLY be between you and your friend. Don’t let the situation affect anyone else’s friendships, or anyone else individually, even if they are within your friend group. Don’t drag others in; don’t ask for opinions, or for your other friends to take sides. Avoid the drama by keeping all the details to yourself, and leave the situation at “we are simply no longer friends.” Plan ahead. Okay, it’s obvious that even after breaking off a friendship, the person isn’t going to just disappear into thin air. You will most likely still see them around and in class, and sometimes even with mutual friends of the two of yours. It’s important to keep a positive mindset and be prepared for this. At first it may rustle up some confusing emotions, but know that everything happens for a reason and the situation will eventually begin to get better. Keep on moving forward. Just like you made your friends before, you will continue to make new ones for the rest of your life, and chances are this won’t be the first friendship breakup you will go through. Some may be harder and some easier, but you will recover and you will always meet new people. Put yourself out there. Your past friendship will most likely have taught you more about what is important in a friendship, so look for those things. You never know what might be around the next corner.

Youtube gold

YouTube is a website used by almost everyone to share videos with one another. It offers video content such as TV or movie clips, music videos, video blogging, how-to guides, and other original videos. YouTube was founded by three former employees of PayPal. While searching the internet for specific videos, the three men could not seem to easily find anything they were looking for, even though they knew the content was out there. The idea arose that they should just create one universal site where a majority of video files online could be found. YouTube offered public beta testing of the site in early 2005, and proved to be very successful. After only about one year, over 65,000 videos were being uploaded daily. The Google Company noticed the great success in YouTube and bought it for $1.65 Billion. Now it operates as one of Google’s subsidiaries and generates over 2 billion views every day.

matthew gilderson One of the earliest videos to really go big on YouTube is “Evolution of Dance.” To this day, Evolution of Dance has been viewed over 290 million times. It shows comedian Jud Laipply doing a six-minute dance routine covering various songs everywhere. He goes from mimicking Vanilla Ice to the doing Chicken Dance. Another big hit on YouTube was “Charlie Bit my Finger” with well over 800 million views. The younger brother, Charlie, bites the finger of his older brother, Harry, as he says the famous words “Charlie bit me” and puts his finger back into Charlie’s mouth for him to bite again and laugh at Harry’s pain. The clip was originally intended to be a family home video, but the internet had other plans when the father uploaded the video for the public to see. Some other YouTube hits include “Leave Britney Alone,” “Don’t Taze Me, Bro,” “Keyboard Cat,” “Sneezing Panda,” “Shoes,” “Zombie Kid Likes Turtles,” “Charlie the Unicorn,” and “Chocolate Rain.”

The song became popular for the catchy beat, a few phrases that the English-speaking population can actually understand, and the glorious “horse dance” that everyone knows. For no other apparent reasons, “Gangnam Style” topped the charts in over 30 countries, was recognized by Guinness World Records for being the most “liked” video on YouTube, and it won best video at the MTV Music Awards.

Apart from single popular videos, YouTube has introduced some other viral trends. bud bullying courtney bullis

It often times goes unrecognized that sometimes your friend is actually bullying you. Learn be aware of the difference between their honest opinions and them straight up putting you down. Here are some short examples: They say “That isn’t how it happened to me,” and we hear “I think you’re lying, because it hasn’t happened to me.” No matter what you may be talking about, it’s important that the person you are talking to is trustworthy, and is someone who trusts you. Comments like this are obvious signs that your friend isn’t empathetic. They say “Why would you put yourself in that situation?” and we hear, “It’s your fault.” This is not cool at all. It is one thing for them to be honest with you but it’s another to completely throw you down and pin what’s hurting you, on you.

Have you ever had a friend who seems just a little too honest? Most of us have, and if you’re in any of these types of situations, you’re not alone.

It’s easy to notice when a friend is ignoring your experiences and making hers a priority; you have three choices when confronting the problem:

Sometimes, after talking to or confiding in someone, it may become obvious that you’re problems are unimportant; venting only triggers their own problems to surface as well. It’s almost like a conversation can’t only be about you—ever. It’s an uncomfortable situation to be in because it can definitely confuse your emotions, and will most likely leave you feeling like you’re being over sensitive. Trust me, you’re not. There are actually studies that prove that women are unintentionally aggressive with one another in conversation because of a constant sense of “competition,” and that is why when discussing a problem or situation you may be in, your friend’s response may begin with something like “You think that’s bad? Listen to this,” instead of supporting what you’re going through. It will feel as if she isn’t even listening to you. Like you are completely closed out, and it’s most likely true. They give of vibes that their problem is greater, or more important than yours.

Address the situation and talk to them about how you feel. Maybe they don’t notice what they are doing. Bringing it to their attention could possibly terminate the situation all together. Be honest and express your feelings and see if that helps at all.

They say “You shouldn’t have…” and we hear “That’s not what I would have done and this is a problem you have.” This can be more embarrassing than anything, especially if it’s said in front of other people. They are pointing out your flaws instead of encouraging you to embrace who you are.

These types of situations can be tricky to deal with, especially if you are uncomfortable opening up and confronting your friend. Nine times out of ten, that is the case. Maybe it’s time to realize that they are not the person you should be confiding in. It’s important that everyone surrounds themselves with supportive people. And anyone You can try learning to ignore it and just vent who makes you feel like your problems are to them just to get it out. But if you decide to your fault, makes you feel even worse, or do this, you can’t expect them to not change just altogether does not care, you should the subject. Animals are used often for research and testing in the United States; an estimated twenty-six million animals are used every year. irish american month alley grant

The question is: what is Irish-American Month? Why is it important? Well, the Irish-American Month is March, and its importance really depends on who exactly we’re talking about. Now just by looking at the name, you can tell that Irish-Americans are originally from Ireland. I mean, they don’t all have to be born there, because some could very well have been born in America. There is history behind this topic, and that’s what we’re about to cover.

appropriate national celebrations and recognition can only happen when all Americans take action. Irish-Americans have done so much to shape and form virtually all areas of life in the United States throughout our country’s great history. We must act now and speak up in order to be heard.”

Here are some fun facts about this Irish American Month! Now, there will also be more than just facts! The site that I got this information from also has peoThe Irish had come over to the U.S. ple asking questions! around the time that Native Americans were here, too. Kennedy broke the glass ceiling in 1961 by becoming the first Irish-American, Catholic president. Looking back at history, the Irish-Americans have done a lot for our country. An Irishman was the first of Christopher Columbus’ crew to step on American ground. Within this month, there are few days that have to do with the Irish-Americans. The most popular day in this month is St. Patrick’s Day. This day is celebrated to notice the Irish-American culture. There is a lot of partying, food, parades, and dancing that correlates with this holiday. “The more you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn the more places you’ll go.” Dr.Seuss Each year, teachers, students, and parents are encouraged to read their favorite books together in early March to honor Dr. Seuss who once said, “You’re never too old, too wacky, or too wild to pick up a book and read to a child.” Seuss, who was born Theodor Seuss Geisel, left behind quite a legacy. His 46 children’s books have sold more than 200 million copies worldwide, and for many readers, his books provide some of their first reading memories. In fact, Dr. Seuss’ goal was to pen books that children found fun and exciting to read. “Cat in the Hat” for instance uses about 250 words, and there are just 50 different words in the favorite “Green eggs and ham.” Geisel’s birthday, March 2, has been adopted as the annual date for National Read Across America Day. Geisel attended Dartmouth College, graduating in 1925. At Dartmouth, he joined the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity and the humor magazine Dartmouth Jack-O-Lantern, eventually rising to the rank of editor and chief. While at Dartmouth, Geisel was caught drinking gin with nine friends in his room. As a result, the dean insisted that he quit all extracurricular activities including the magazine. Geisel continued to work on the magazine without the administrations knowledge by signing his work by the

pen name “Seuss.” Upon graduating from Dartmouth, he entered Lincoln’s college, Oxford, intending to earn a PhD in English Literature. At Oxford he met Helen Palmer, who encouraged him to give up becoming an English teacher in favor of pursuing drawing as a career. Geisel left Oxford without earning a degree and returned to the United States in February 1927, where he immediately began submitting his work to magazines, book publishers, and advertising agencies. Making use of his time in Europe, he pitched a series of cartoons called Eminent Europeans to Life magazine, which both passed on it. His first nationally published cartoon appeared in the July 16, 1927 issue of The Saturday Evening Post. This single $25 sale encouraged Geisel to move from Springfield to New York City. Later that year, when he accepted a job as writer and illustrator at the humor magazine Judge, Geisel felt financially stable enough to marry Helen. His first cartoon for Judge appeared on October 22, 1927, and the Geisels were married on November 29. Geisel’s first work signed “Dr. Seuss” was published in Judge, about six months after he started working there. Geisel supported himself and his wife through the Great Depression by drawing advertising for General Electric, NBC, Standard Oil, and many other companies. In 1935, he wrote and drew a short-lived comic strip called hejii.

15

In 1936, while the couple was returning from an ocean voyage to Europe, the rhythm of the ship’s engines inspired the poem that became his first book, And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street. Based on Geisel’s varied accounts, the book was rejected by between 20 and 43 publishers. According to Geisel, he was walking home to burn the manuscript when a chance encounter with an old Dartmouth classmate led to its publication by Vanguard Press. Geisel wrote four more books before the US entered World War II. This included The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins in 1938 as well as The King’s Stilts and The Seven Lady Godivas in 1939, all of which were, atypically for him, in prose. This was followed by Horton Hatches the Egg in 1940, in which Geisel returned to the use of poetry. Though Geisel made a point of not beginning the writing of his stories with a moral in mind, stating that “kids can see a moral coming a mile off.” He was not against writing about issues; he said that “there’s an inherent moral in any story.” Over the course of his long career, Geisel wrote over 60 books. Though most were published under his well-known pseudonym, Dr. Seuss, he also authored over a dozen books as Theo LeSieg and one as Rosetta Stone. His books have topped many bestseller lists, sold over 600 million copies, and have been translated into more than 20 languages. Celebrate Dr. Seuss by reading a book this month!

Some people know exactly what they want in life, while others are completely clueless as to what they are going to do the next day. Some find out earlier what they want to be when they grow up, and it takes others a much longer time to find themselves and what their passion is. There is not one negative word to be said about this boy genius. Anthony is a diligent student, selfless individual, and an even superior friend. Anthony is set out on a mission to impact the lives of everyone in a positive way and believes he will do so. Anthony is destined to work hard in his career choice of computer science, and he will be great in doing so.
