BEHIND THE SCENES LETTER FROM THE EDITORS:

GRAPHIC EDITOR: Daniel Carroll

Hello fellow friends!

This month so much is going on in the school, and around the world. My team once again has been hard at work to bring you the most information that we can fit in one issue. The Pulse magazine is something that we have dedicated a lot of our personal time creating. I am so happy that we have put together another amazing magazine. We made our feature story over high-school dating, and Makayla Buckner did an amazing job at doing her research, and putting together the piece. Let us know if there is any information that is going on in the month of March that you want to be included in the Pulse. You can always email me at sthorpe@s.rs-wolves.com Also, please send any pictures you want to be included, student involvement is such a big part of what we are doing in journalism. Continue to give us feedback, and thank you for support to our magazine.

ADVICE

Student Hacks By: Kyndall Porter Just like in the weeks before that are so many hacks that you could come up with and share. Searching this month I didn’t find two main hacks that really stood out, so here are a bunch of little hacks to help make your life just a little easier and more efficient 1. Put a dryer sheet on the back of a fan while it’s blowing. They’ll stick to the back and make the room smell wonderful 2. Five cups of Green Tea a day can help you lose weight, most of it around your belly 3. Toothpaste removes ink from your clothes. Apply it to the stain, let it dry and then wash off 4. Switching your phone to airplane mode while it is charging will make it charge faster 5. You can shrink a pimple in minutes by putting a dab of Listerine on it. The alcohol will dry it up and cause it to fade. 6. If you have a sore throat, you can eat marshmallows to keep the soreness away 7. Whenever you get burned, apply toothpaste it soothes the pain and stops the burning 8. Need a good way to whiten your teeth, mash up a strawberry with half a teaspoon baking soda to create a paste. Spread the mixture onto your teeth with a toothbrush and let it sit for five minutes, then rinse and brush your teeth with regular toothpaste 9. Submerge your feet and hands in hot/warm water and put a bag of frozen peas at the base of your skull to help with headaches and migraines 10. Writing something out is equivalent to reading it seven times There are so many positive things that come out of having hacks to make life easier, especially when you aren’t feeling good having a good hack that works. There are a ton of way to make things easier and ways to help get things done.

STAFF OPINION

Staff Opinion By: Kyndall Porter Reeds Spring High School welcomed a new custodian the year of 2013. Another employee in our eyes, but one who worker day and night being the scenes to make sure our school is clean. As I was only in the sixth grade when this man took his job, everyone knew about him. If you didn’t know Sam Love then you were missing out. I would listen to the stories being told at the dinner table about the new cool janitor. “He did this today, He does that” there wasn’t a high schooler who didn’t go unnoticed by him or didn’t know him personally. As I grew and made it into the middle school I always couldn’t wait to go get the chance to go to the high school in the off chance that I would see him. I can remember one night when a kid spilt his Gatorade all over the place and just like any good employee; Sam went to work helping the young boy clean up the mess. The boy then going to buy another Gatorade and spilling it again all over, Sam cleaned it up. For a third time the little boy spilt a new Gatorade he had bought to only be helped by Sam when it came to cleaning up the mess that was made. The consistency of his work was unbelievable.

with you or play a little two on two. As the days got longer and the time seemed like forever, he was there. If you had a problem he was there. Starting sophomore year I knew I could count on Sam to be there is nobody else was. You always hear that you should find a teacher that you would be comfortable talking to well; our custodian was our new teacher. Expecting another good year of laughs and memories to share we got the news that Sam was being moved to the new building. The news getting to the students sent an uprising and created chaos. Realizing there was a whole another half of the year that we would be taking on with Sam be there day in and day out. Understanding the move and how it only seemed best I could only think of how this all seemed to be a huge mess. We miss you Sam Love and we appreciate your time. As I write this is guess I wanted to get the point across that our high school employees no matter their position taking a caring for us students and deserve to be recognized for the work that they do.

Waking up early every morning to beat you there to unlock doors and make sure everything was straight to staying all day and doing his daily duties and stays late to keep things straight for the next day. On top of keeping his work on high he also had a wife and three children. As the years go on and I become a freshman I knew that only having the coolest custodian was a perk of this place everyone they said they hated and wish they didn’t have to be. From day to day Sam was there. You couldn’t miss him. Always getting you the things you need or cleaning up your mess to simply carrying on a conversation about life or telling a funny story. Sam was a big fan of sports and would always encourage you to try your best no matter the sweat or pain it took he knew you were capable enough to finish. I remember my freshman year of volleyball Sam would come and cheer us on like our own personal cheerleader. Making fun of us when we missed a ball and gasping when we did something cool. Always taking part in the things we are interested in he would be more than willing to stop for a minute to throw a ball around, pass

dren’s Hospices, Elton John AIDS Foundation, and GRAMMY Foundation. With supporting AIDS & HIV, children, creative health, and poverty just to speak of the bigger problems Ed takes part in. Some fun facts about Ed is that his full name is Edward Christopher Sheeran, His brother is a composer of classical music, he sang in a church choir at the age of four, in 2009 Ed played over 300 shows, Ed Sheeran has named his guitars Lloyd, Felix, Cyril, and Nigel, and Ed Sheeran has a tattoo of a Ketchup bottle and cup of tea. As you are trying to find something to listen to look for Ed Sheeran and listen to his albums and top hits.

By: Kyndall Porter This month for music we are going to highlight an artist and their accomplishments. Ed Sheeran born on February 17 of 1991 in England to grow up to be America’s favorite singing ginger. Witting his own songs at a young age and then moving to London as a teen to pursue music. Most of the attention he got was because of online shows. Hitting number one on ITunes before even signing with a record label sent him through the roof. Singing with Atlantic and then getting a Grammy for the song of the year with “Thinking Out Loud.” Releasing albums like X, loose change, and + and a minimum of thirty two songs, and writing songs and performing as a featured artist. Winning awards such as favorite male artist, British artist of the year, pop award songs, British breakthrough act and solo male artist, song of the year, best new artist, best live act, and best male video to name a few of the big ones. Winning a total of 43 awards and being nominated for a little over 104 awards. Having someone to look to or have an influence seems to be a common theme in the music industry. Ed Sheeran’s influence came when he was eleven and he went with his father to a Damien Rice show in Ireland, this beginning his never ending love for music. Along with The Beatles and Eminem inspiring Ed Sheeran to be all that he could when it came to music, he says they are what pushed him to work hard enough to be accepted into the National Youth Theatre in London to start a career in the music industry. Every musical artist has a charity or a few that they will put month towards or work with but Ed Sheeran has always to be one to care so much about giving back to others. Where we belong is the perfect book to read around valentines. I’ve already read it twice and I fall more and more in love with it every time. I felt that the characters were relatable, though I didn’t necessarily agree with all of their decisions. That is what makes Giffin’s stories so interesting. She doesn’t take the easy route; she makes things realistic to true life. I loved the backstory flashbacks, without it the book wouldn’t have worked. Other novels by Emily Giffin :

daughter, find themselves drawn back into Norman’s world, while Romero hungers for revenge against his stepson.

By: Kayla Buckner As a female I personally don’t care for romance, especially romantic tv shows. As Valentine’s day comes up I looked for shows that were non-romantic, and guess what? I found ten of them! 1.Powerless (Starts February 2nd, 8:30 pm on NBC) Emily is a spunky young insurance adjuster specializing in regular-people coverage against damage caused by the crime-fighting superheroes. But it’s when she stands up to one of these larger-than-life figures (after an epic battle messes with her commute) that she accidentally becomes a cult “hero” in her own right... even if it’s just to her group of lovably quirky co workers. Now, while she navigates her normal, everyday life against an explosive backdrop, Emily might just discover that being a hero doesn’t always require superpowers.

4.Big Little Lies (Starts February 19th, 9:00pm on HBO) Subversive, darkly comedic drama Big Little Lies tells the tale of three mothers of first graders whose apparently perfect lives unravel to the point of murder.

2.Newton’s Law (Starts February 9th 8:00 pm on ABC)

When Josephine’s low-flying solicitor’s practice is incinerated by a disgruntled client, she is persuaded by her old uni’ friend and not-so-secret admirer, Lewis Hughes, to trade the benefits of her brilliant mind for a berth in the lofty glamour of Knox Chambers. With her office destroyed, her marriage collapsing and motherhood fast losing its charm, Josephine decides it’s time she took her own aspirations off the back burner and resumed her barrister’s robes.

5.Impractical Jokers (Returning season 6, February 9th, 10:00pm on truTV) This hidden-camera series follows four lifelong friends - Brian ‘’Q’’ Quinn, James ‘’Murr’’ Murray, Joe Gatto and Sal Vulcano - who take dares to an outrageous level. Since they were young, the quartet have challenged one another to do ridiculous dares in public.

3.Bates Motel (Returning Season 5, February 20th, 9:00pm on A&E) The fifth season, the last season, begins two years after the death of Norma. Publicly happy and well-adjusted, Norman struggles at home, where his violent blackouts are increasing as “Mother” threatens to take him over completely. Meanwhile, Dylan and Emma, now married with an infant

9. When We Rise (Starts February 27th, 9:00pm on ABC) ‘When We Rise’ chronicles the personal and political struggles, set-backs and triumphs of a diverse family of LGBT men and women who helped pioneer one of the last legs of the U.S. Civil Rights movement from its turbulent infancy in the 20th century to the once unfathomable successes of today. The period piece tells the history of the gay rights movement, starting with the Stonewall Riots in 1969.

7. Imposters (Starts February 7th, 10:00pm on Bravo) The series follows Maddie, a persona shifting con-artist who is as beautiful as she is dangerous, leaving her unwitting victims tormented when they realize they have been used and robbed of everything including their hearts. Wrestling- The wrestlers are preparing for dis-

tricts which will be held in Clinton on February 10th and 11th.

By: Brendan Durham Boys Basketball-The boys basketball team is having a very spectacular season. They won the Spokane Tournament for the second year in a row by beating Marionville by a score of 54-43. Joel Gertson was the Tournament MVP. They didn’t slow down there, though. They also won their next two games away from home with Gertson at the helm, beating Blue Eye and Cassville. They suffered a tough loss, though, at home against Fair Grove by a score of 59-51. Courtwarming was a success for the Wolves. Logan Bauer became king, Keri Lynn Johnson became queen, and the Wolves blew out Buffalo 72-43. The Wolves fell to Logan-Rogersville 52-36 but came back with a 66-46 win over the Forsyth Panthers. The Wolves traveled to Hollister and doubled their score with a 48-24 win proving that they really are twice as good as the poor Tigers.

Girls Basketball- The girls basketball team is having such a bounce back season from last year that even Big Sean would approve. The Lady Wolves took 3rd in the Galena Tournament and also set a couple records. Sophomore point guard, Kalena Asbill, broke the single season steals record with 8 more guaranteed games to go with 92 steals. A team record was also set by holding an opponent to the least amount of points, by holding Hollister to just 11 points for the whole game. The girls maintain an 8-9 record after beating Hollister once again, but this time by a score of 43-40. The girls went back and forth with Buffalo but eventually fell behind losing 66-54.

Teacher Spotlight By: Rylee Olson Dane Horton, a 29 year old male, teaches botany and biology at the Reeds Spring High School. He was born in Colorado Springs, but grew up in Leadwood, Missouri and went to West St. Francois High School. In high school, he was in FCA and played outfield in baseball. Dane graduated from Missouri State University with a Bachelors of Natural and Applied Science and Education in Botany/Unified Science. He was a teacher at Spokane for 3 years before coming to Reeds Spring this 20162017 school year, he intends to stay at Reeds Spring for awhile. Over the 3 year period of being a teacher in Spokane, he taught biology, environmental chemistry, ACT prep, botany, zoology, anatomy and physiology, and biology 2 (for dual credit). When asked his most embarrassing teaching moment, this is what he said, “I wouldn’t necessarily call this an embarrassing moment, but I once had a very long, heated talk with a class, and later on in the class period found out it was the wrong class I was lecturing.”

Growing up in high school Dane Horton always wanted to be a carpenter, so when he could, he tried it and realized it was not at all what he wanted to do. So doing what he thought would be the next best move, he went to college, got his degrees, and started teaching. He seemed to like it a lot more than being a carpenter, since he is still a teacher to this day, I believe it makes it a bit obvious that this is definitely his calling for his career choice. Advancing in being a teacher, Mr. Horton would like to develop a model classroom based around real world issues and problems and get the community involved as much as possible. When Mr. Horton was coming to the Reeds Spring High School, he automatically felt extremely accepted by everyone, including the community. He felt like he’d fit in from the first meeting and he thinks he has fit in pretty well so far as a teacher and even just as a person he has felt very comfortable with the atmosphere and the environment here at the district. If there is any teachers that anyone would like to be featured in the Teacher’s Spotlight column, please email me at rolson@s.rs-wolves.com. And if there are any opinions about the Teacher’s Spotlight column you can email me about any problems or suggestions and they will be gladly appreciated.

Dane Horton has a twin brother named Kyle, a biotechnologist, whom is also 29 as well, obviously! He has a biological sister named Ashley, 30 years old, whom works at Walmart. He has one half sister, 40 years old, whom just moved here from England! Dane Horton’s hobbies include: golf, golf, and more golf, going to baseball games, floating, deer hunting, and hiking. He has a son, 2 years old, named Jace, and is recently remarried! He has a dog named Buster and 2 cats, Jenny and Val.

Student Spotlight

By: Kayley Harrison

Hobbies In her free time, Sarah likes to make vlogs, where she can talk about whatever she wants to her camera. She even incorporates her gift of singing into some of her videos, recording her own music videos, and singing covers of some of her favorite songs. With talent like that, I couldn’t think of a better way to put her gift to good use.

Sarah Bishop is a junior and a very free spirited student here at Reeds Spring High School. She moved into our district during second grade from a school in Dallas, Texas; where in her free time, she played soccer. Since moving to Reeds Spring, Sarah has been actively involved in our school through clubs, and teams. Teams like speech and debate, theater, and destination imagination; which I will elaborate on some more throughout the article.

Dreaming of the Future After high school, Sarah hopes to go to an acting school in either New York, or California; where afterwards, she hopes to have her own sitcom. She always strives to make people laugh and smile on a daily basis, and now she hopes to make a living out of it. At the rate that she’s going, it seems like Sarah’s down the right path for achieving her dreams.

Major Accomplishments in School During her sophomore year, Sarah landed her first major role in our school’s theater group. She was given the role of Ms. Scarlett in the 2015-2016 musical of the game “Clue” that was put on by our drama department last December. This year, Sarah auditioned for “The Wizard of Oz”. Now, she uses her photographic memory to memorize the lines for Dorothy Gale. In preparation for the role, Sarah told me that she studied how Judy Garland prepared for and played the role. Her Chihuahua will even get to play the role of Toto along-side her on stage. Overall, Sarah says that she really enjoys acting. However, she says that she prefers to do comedic acting, over dramatic acting.

From what I’ve witnessed, Sarah is an astounding student, and actress. Her ability to make anyone smile with her wacky antics, her wit, and of course her talent, that’s what landed her in this month’s issue for the student spotlight.

of the court warming court candidates. Freshman court was Prestin Loveridge and Brooke Davis. Sophomore court was Troy Froeschle and Maddy Evans. Junior court was Cole Nordin and Jenni Essary. Senior court candidates for the boys were Logan Bauer, Brendan Durham, Craig Foster, and Jacob Rantz. The senior court candidates for the girls were Keri Lynn Johnson, Lydia Gasper, Ashley Hill, and Carlie Tyree. After the video was the wing eating contest! The girl court candidates and Mrs. Green had to eat 3 barbeque wings, 2 mild wings, and 1 buffalo wing. Ashley Hill was the winner for that. After the wing contest, we had Mr. Horton and Mrs. Pryor do a dance off, which Mrs. Pryor won. After the dance off, the boy court candidates also had a contest! They had to put in the Watch ‘Ya Mouth mouthpieces and sing a song, we would pause the song and they had to finish the lyrics. Mr. Davis came up to stage and sang Friday by Rebecca Black. Cole Nordin won the game! After the boys’ game we did a three legged race with siblings and finished off with class cheers and spirit winners!

By: Rylee Olson Courtwarming might have just been one of the most exciting events of the year of 2017 so far for Reeds Spring High School. We had competitions, a pep rally, a basketball game, and a dance! To make everything better, the Wolves took a win during the game on February 3rd against Buffalo, the score being 72-43. Logen Plumb also broke the charging record during the game! Not to mention we got to celebrate a pretty great win with a school dance that was totally gnarly. Leading up to Courtwarming day, Student Council had put together a spirit week to get everyone excited and pumped for the big game! On Monday it was PJ day; wear your PJ’s to school. Tuesday was Country day; wear country attire like boots, camo, plaid, hats, etc. Wednesday was Favorite Sports Team day; wear your favorite sports team attire whether it be a hat, shirt, shorts, socks, etc. Thursday was Throw Back Thursday; wear any old clothes that probably shouldn’t be in your closet! Last but not least, Friday was Red and White day; wear anything and everything that is red and white! A lot of people even painted their whole face red and white! With spirit week, we count up everyone dressed up to the day and add them all up at the end of the week to see which class won spirit points to get the spirit stick. The junior class took 1st place, seniors took 2nd, sophomores took 3rd, and the freshmen took 4th. We also had a contest for hallway decorations. Seniors taking 1st, juniors took 2nd, sophomores took 4th, and freshman took 3rd.

Before varsity game started, we had the Courtwarming ceremony. All the candidates walked out grade by grade, and then the seniors walked out 2 by 2. The Courtwarming King and Queen was Keri Lynn Johnson and Logan Bauer, which were crowned by last year’s Courtwarming King and Queen Krystin Fitzwater and Reno Randle. Then the game started and the student section went wild with cheers! After winning the game we celebrated with a school dance that went until 11:15, but it totally made the end of the night worth staying up that late! All in all, Reeds Spring Wolves did great, and the student body was happy to be a part of a great school!

During the day for the last hour of school we had a pep rally assembly; put together and hosted by the junior student body in Student Council and Joel Gertson, the Student Body President. In the assembly, we opened up with the band, color guard, and the cheerleaders, and then there was a video

Art Gallery

Jacqueline Durant

By: Kayley Harrison

Jacqueline, along with the rest of her class, was asked to make up a font of her choice. And out of sheer genius, she designed her font after the looks of Disney characters! All the way from Ariel to Zazu, not a single character is unaccounted for. I love it!

Hello RSHS students! Welcome back to our art gallery! Last month, we took a new approach for our Art Gallery article. Now, instead of taking submissions from students; the art teachers, Mr. Essick and Mr. Locke, will be picking and choosing which students they believe deserves to show off their skill. Last month, Mr. Locke picked four students and one piece for each student. This month, we had Mr. Essick show us some of the work that his students have been doing. These are the pieces that we believed deserved some recognition.

Paige Chambers Paige is a student in one of Mr. Essick’s “Fundamentals of Art” classes. Recently, he had his students recreate a quote of their choice in the font called: “Old English Text MT“.

Robin Ball Robin, along with the rest of her class, was instructed to draw a still life of some sort. Robin drew a coffee cup, but in the background, behind the cup itself, she calls it “Survival Juice”. I think that this is actually extremely relatable, and I’m sure other people will agree as well. It’s hard getting up in the morning nowadays without a cup of coffee. There’s so much artistic talent in this school, and so much of it unfortunately goes unrecognized; which is why I love that we get to display every piece that deserves to be shown off. Thanks for reading, I hope that you’ve had a Fantastic February, and have a Marvelous March!

Paige’s inspirational quote cleverly says: “Have a cup of positive-tea”. Which is something that we may all need every once in a while. Great job Paige!

Malayna Bryan

Special thanks to Mr. Essick for allowing me to take pictures of each project.

Mr. Essick told the rest of his class to recreate some sort of emblem. Malayna decided that she would draw Instagram‘s logo. Malayna added a few more colors to the logo, shading with the colored pencils thoroughly until they blended into a perfect gradient. She even incorporated her initials into the center of the logo, where the lens is. Nice job!

Speech and Debate By: Tyler Herzan The Reeds Spring speech team traveled to Bolivar to compete, and they did just that showing off plenty of talent in multiple events. Most of the Team advanced to the next level of their competition Sarah Bishop, Blair Barnette, Megan Dupas, and Brennan Waters. Putting tons of effort and work into every event before and after when advancing. Whether it was ranking in the top five for Duo in HI, or individual accomplishments like ranking first in HI and holding a lowest score of second place. On February 18th, 2017 the Speech team traveled to Hillcrest HighSchool and participated in their last regular tournament of the season and came through with top results that should be taken into high regard. The team placed second in the overall sweep category. 2nd place in sweeps. The past weekend personal placements rank as so: 1st place in Humorous Interpretation- Sarah Bishop 4th place in Humorous Interpretation- Brennan Waters 1st in poetry - Kaylie Parker 1st place in Duet- Brennan Waters and Megan Dupas 4th place in Improv Duet - Kaylie Parker and Shelby Thompson Out of the events we participated in, 9 of the events broke through to semi finals, and 5 of those events broke through to finals. If you happen to see any of the participants in the Speech and Debate make sure to congratulate them for their accomplishments throughout their regular season.

POLITICS

Political Corner

Though this law was just signed, and will not be in effect until August, Unions have been hard at work filing a referendum. This is a rarely used referendum petition that could possibly freeze the law and put it on the ballot in 2018. Though the push for right to work has been almost a decade long fight for Republicans, if the petition gathers enough signatures, the continued fight for right to work is extremely possible. However, this would require one last valiant effort by Missouri organized labor, to prevent the show-me-state from joining the majority of the Midwest, in becoming the 28th right to work state.

By: Christian Roston

Missouri Governor Eric Greitens has just signed a bill making Missouri the 28th “right to work” state. The bill passed through the states congress rather quickly, with the newly-elected governor making it clear that he would sign it if it reached his desk, throughout his campaign. Right to work is a law already implemented by 27 other states, prohibiting labor unions from forcing employees to pay union dues as a condition for employment. Although this doesn’t make it illegal for employees to unionize, it can in fact weaken labor unions, allowing employees to fragment unions throughout companies by opting out of union dues. While many Missourians view this as a positive attribute of economic freedom, others view it as a direct attack on the people’s ability to unionize against abusive employers. This issue has been hotly debated between Republicans and Democrats, making it an undoubtedly hot issue for Missouri, if and when it is implemented.

The Immigration Ban On Friday, January 7th, President Trump signed a travel ban that has been, to say the least, extremely controversial. Protests and violent oppositions have erupted in cities all over the country since the order was signed- banning seven Muslim-majority countries that were originally on the Obama administrations terror watch list. These countries include Syria, Iraq, Libya, Iran, Yemen, Somalia, and Sudan. And today, February 10, 2017, a federal court in California unanimously ruled it unconstitutional. As usual, the newly elected president issued a hostile tweet, saying he will elevate the decision to the Supreme Court. He made the statement “SEE YOU IN COURT!” public on Twitter as well.

Greitens believes this new law will open Missouri up for business, making it more appealing to companies who now have the ability to give their employees the choice of whether part of their income goes to a labor union. Some though, aren’t so sure of this. As Greitens was giving a speech in an abandoned Springfield warehouse, many began protesting by shouting “RIGHT TO WORK, WRONG FOR US!” repeatedly as the Governor was speaking. Many unions across the state, more specifically the AFL-CIO, have violently opposed this new legislation, stating that it will weaken labor unions and allow the employers of many Missouri workers to take advantage of them and their families, also making the statement that this is nothing more than a political agenda by Republicans to weaken Unions, allowing employees to benefit from labor unions without having to pay.

POLITICS So the real question is can Trump legally get by with this? From a black and white standpoint: yes. The Executive branch under federal law can technically deny entry to any class or group of aliens attempting to enter The United States. “The exclusion of aliens is a fundamental act of sovereignty … inherent in the executive power,” said the Supreme Court in the 50’s. But, this doesn’t necessarily mean the president will get by with the order. From the start, things have been messy. The White House is viewed by many citizens to be unstable, and the implementation of this executive order has been far from normal. From Trump’s tweets attacking a GOP appointed judge who ruled against him and the somewhat irresponsible implementation of the order may change the court’s decision when it comes down to the line. Even with the president’s relatively unchecked power on aliens and immigration, things might not turn out quite normal.

thoughtless and an attack on the United States foreign policy regarding Taiwan. Could this possibly be an initial “tough move in” by Trump, in his attitude towards China? The president’s advisors, have apparently been working on this for months now, in an under the table effort to rebuild at least SOME ties with Taiwan (a small country that now has the 15th largest economy in the world). All that’s currently known is that China certainly wasn’t happy about it. Understandable, since this has been our country’s policy for over 38 years now.

Whether you personally agree with President Trump or not, it can be agreed upon that this ban has been a center of controversy, and will continue to be for a while. And it will take an extensive amount of time (if ever) for Trump to get the media back on his side. Many media outlets have fought him since the beginning. From Twitter rants to name calling, the president isn’t exactly what would be referred to as “formal”.

President Trump made a phone call February 10, much to everyone’s surprise, to Chinese President Xi Jinping. The White House described the phone call as “extremely cordial”. Importantly for Xi, Trump confirmed the US’ continued support of the “One China” policy. The policy that assures the US’ support for China’s refusal to recognize Taiwan as an independent country, much controversy was sparked over this, as President Trump took a call from the president of Taiwan, soon after his inauguration. This marks the first communication between a Taiwanese and US leader in almost 40 years. This historic protocol breaking communication between the two countries was a result of months of quiet planning between Trumps advisors, even before Trump was the republican nominee. Efforts were driven to give the call publicity as a routine congratulatory call. “He took the call, accepted her congratulations and good wishes and it was precisely that,” Vice President-elect Mike Pence said. Critics portray the move as

High School Relationships

2. How did you meet? 3. When he/she is having a bad day, what do you do the cheer him/her up? 4. Do you see each other together in 5 years? 5. What is your favorite thing about him/her? 6. Would you consider him/her to be your best friend? 7. Do you believe a high school relationship is worth it? 8. Who was your first high school relationship? 9. What is one thing he/she does to annoy you? 10. Statistics says that 9 out of 10 high school relationships don’t last, do you agree or disagree?

By: Kayla Buckner As a junior in high school I look back on my High school experience, and I have to say, it is nothing like high school musical or as great as the movies make it seem. Dating in high school is definitely nothing like Troy and Gabriela. The Girl does not wait for you like in Sixteen candles and the boy does not stand outside your window with a boom box on his shoulder like Lloyd Dobler in Say anything. Dating in high school can be tricky, there’s so much more to it than just hanging out with a person you like. Like if your friends are too involved and your parents are overprotective. These things can cause stress in the relationship, and is part of the many reasons why most high school relationships don’t last. Making a relationship last in high school is not impossible. There’s really only a few things you can do to make it last; keep your relationship separate from your friends, try not to include your friends in your arguments and business with one another. Keep the negativity low; don’t speak badly about one another, especially to your friends. Know who you can trust, you may have a few people come up to you and have something to say about your boyfriend or girlfriend. I know by experience that sometimes friends like to cause trouble between couples. Communicate with one-another. If there is an issue, just throw it out there in the open and resolve it. Be respectful and patient with each other, and don’t forget that you have a life outside of one- another. Most couples are so caught up in themselves that they forget the life they have. Don’t let your grades slip and don’t slip away from your friends. It is okay to spend time together, just make sure you’re not spend too much time together. There are exactly Six Hundred and Eight students in the school; Fifty-two are currently in a relationship that has been over two-weeks; sixteen are freshman, eleven are sophomores, twenty are juniors, and only 5 are seniors. High school relationships are the strongest, especially the ones that made through high school to marriage. You started dating during your awkward phases; braces, acne, awkward laughs, and clownish makeup. If you can be attracted to each other though that then you’re good for life. You’ve both come so far together and understand each other so well. You have a strong foundation to fall back on when you guys are stressed out or fighting. You have unlimited shared memories and those memories get you more excited for more and what’s to come. tions; 1.

I’ve interviewed 4 Couples, and asked ten simple ques-

Maddy and Troy (sophomores)

Nate and Samm (freshman and Ju-

1. Troy answered “March 14, 2016” 2. Maddy said “we actually dated then were just friends then started dating again.” 3. Maddy- “tickle him”, troy- “keep bothering her” 4. Both said “yeah” 5. Maddy- “His laugh” Troy- “Her personality” 6. Both also said “yeah” 7. Both replied with “yes” 8. Maddy and Troy both pointed at each other 9. Troy- “tickles me” Maddy- “he likes to pin me down and tickle my feet” 10. Both agree.

1. Samm Answered “December 11th, 2016” 2. “He kind of just stared at me across the lunch room then started talking to me throughout school, then we went to a church event together and served food to homeless people” 3. Nate- “random stuff ” Samm- “write him notes or bring him red vines” 4. Both- “yeah” 5. Nate- “I find her really funny because she does random things that are kind of dumb which makes it funny” Samm“His kindness he shows to other people” 6. Both- “Yeah” 7. Samm- “most definitely” Nate- “yeah” 8. Nate-“Kamryn Hopper”, Samm- “Austin Staugaard” 9. Samm- “Grabs my nose”, Nate- “pinches the inside of my leg and pulls my hair” 10. Both agree.

FEATURE Noah and Ryley (sophomore and freshman)

I’ve also asked 10 students, 5 boys and 5 girls, what their opinion was on high school relationships

1. “November 11th 2016” 2. Noah-“Escape room seminar” 3. Noah-“give her a hug” Ryley- “force him to talk about his problems, communication is key” 4. Ryley-“I would like to say yes, but I don’t know what the future holds for us, especially with collage ” Noah- “same” 5. Noah-“Her humor” Ryley- He’s easy to talk to” 6. Both yes 7. Both yeah 8. Ryley- “him” Noah-“Allison” 9. Noah-“Sarcasm sometimes” Ryley- “When I know something is wrong and I ask he just says nothing” 10. Noah- “Maybe a strong 7 and a half ” Ryley- “I agree”

Boy 1- “I think they’re full of drama, there’s no point to them because they don’t last over a year” Girl 1- “I feel like they can be worthless because you’re basically never going to marry the person you date in high school” Boy 2-“I don’t know, there’s nothing wrong with them I guess” Girl 2- “Their pretty amazing, I love my boy” Boy 3-“Their so not worth your time, you should spend your time trying to focus on your life and relationships later” Girl 3- “They can be good in some cases; it gives you more to look forward to when you come to school” Boy 4-“Waste of time” Girl 4- “Dude, they suck” Boy 5-“They are worth having because they help you grow as a person” Girl 5- “I think that high school relationships are unique, they come and they go, but some can last forever. That’s what makes them special” People have very many different opinions when it comes to high school relationships, but despite all the negative comments I believe a relationship in high school is worth every moment. I am one of the fifty-two students currently in a relationship. This relationship has taught me so much and I wouldn’t trade what Sean and I have for anything. Personally, I’m in love with the thought of love. Relationships get you and your partner out and social more. So take a chance and wait like the girl in Sixteen Candles and be like Lloyd Dobler in Say Anything. Be like Troy and Gabriela.

Sarah and Noah (Juniors)

1. “June 11th, 2015” 2. “ We were in the same class in second grade, then we pretty had that class together every year then obviously got together in high school” 3. Noah-“ Honestly, I just act goofy and then occasionally I get her something” Sarah-“I just try to listen to him and talk to him about it then I get him some food or candy or something” 4. Both said “yeah” 5. Noah-“The way she makes me laugh” Sarah-“How he can make a whole room laugh and how he doesn’t care how awful his sense of humor is” 6. Both said “Yeah” 7. Sarah-“Well it depends, I mean some people are in relationships just to be in relationships, but if your actually dedicated to the person then sure” Noah-“I have the same point of view” 8. Noah- “Mackenzie lewallen” Sarah-“Him” 9. Noah-“Smacks her food” Sarah-“Sometimes Noah doesn’t know when to stop being funny” 10. Both agreed

Amanda’s Kiosk By: Amanda Pryor How well you take care of your skin now, will for sure be a reflection as you age. The better you take care of your skin, the younger and healthier not just your face, but the rest of body will look too. A good skin care routine should do five things for your face. Those including cleanse, exfoliate, tone, moisturize, and lastly protect. A lot of people don’t realize that skipping some of these steps can be what I causing your skin problems. If you find that your skin is experiencing acne, dryness, dullness, oiliness, and sometimes rosacea is probably stemming from your skin care routine.

the rest of your skin care routine. There are a lot of controversies on the use of Witch Hazel as a toner. Some people say to stay away from Witch Hazel because of its high alcohol content, while others argue that Witch Hazel actually dried out the blemishes on their face. I personally found that Witch Hazel was a great spot treatment, but nothing I would use to tone. Im enjoying a Rose Water toner at the moment, it leaves my skin looking radiant and bright, evening out my skin tone and pulling out pink undertones. You can apply toner on a cotton pad and dab it into your skin, or, there are toning sprays that you can mist onto your face.

Step 4- Moisturize

All day, your face is exposed to various amounts of dirt and gross things that will clog your pores. That is why it is important to clean these out of your face with a good, alcohol free face wash. Alcohol dries out your skin, so read the labels and make sure you aren’t buying something that is going to make your skin dry and crusty and peel off. You should also take your makeup off before washing your face because the face wash will be focused on taking off the makeup instead of cleaning out your pores. Your face wash will do more for you if you use either a makeup wipe, or a cream and cotton pad beforehand and get rid of the makeup. Make a habit of washing your face twice a day, once right before bed, and then again in the morning. While you sleep your face might sweat, or you can accumulate things in your pores from rubbing your face on a pillow all night. Not clearing out your pores only traps dirt under your skin. This will cause breakouts and very oily skin.

After you’ve washed, exfoliated, and toned your skin, its going to be obvious your skin will need some hydration. Moisturizing your face is crucial to keeping your skin looking youthful and lively. Collagen is an abundant protein that makes up most of your hair, skin, and nails. Its significance is how well your skin is looking among other things. Dermis, the inner layer of the skin, contains large amounts of collagen whose fibers form a supporting mesh, responsible for skin’s characteristics such as strength, texture and resilience. As you age, your body has a more difficult time producing collagen, which in turn causes lines and wrinkles, droopy skin, and dullness. You can keep your skin feeling bouncy and refreshed by remembering to moisturize at least once a day. Think of your skin cells like a sponge. A dried up, crusty, small sponge is definitely less appealing than a bigger, moist, and malleable sponge. That’s how your skin reacts to being dry and gross versus you remembering to hydrate.

Step 2- Exfoliate

Step 5- Protection

Step 3- Tone Toner is a water based liquid that enhances your com-

Limit your skins sun exposure! Ultraviolet rays will over time cause a series of skin damage. Skin cancer, wrinkles, freckles, sun spots, and age spots are some of the things you can expect to see if you aren’t careful of the harsh sun. Apply SPF of at least 15 to your face to protect it from the UV rays. Even in winter there is sunlight, which is damaging your skin. Anytime you’re in the sun without sun screen your skin is being damaged slowly but surely. There are moisturizers that provide a 2-in-1, conveniently packing both SPF and moisturizer into one bottle. Remember that what you put into your face and its routine is what you’ll get out. The more you remember to not skip anything will

Step 1- Cleansing

Exfoliation is the act of scrubbing or applying some type of abrasion to your skin in order to remove access dead skin. Exfoliates come in a variety of ways. A face wash might have some type of beads or sand like texture to scrub away built up dead skin cells that will again, clog your pores. There are face masks that are also a bit harsh that will rid your skin, and after will have it feeling very soft. Remember not to exfoliate every day, it might irritate your skin and cause redness. Imagine taking a scratch pad you wash dishes with to your face every day, definitely too much exfoliation. You should exfoliate every three or four days though.

plexion. It balances your Ph, shrinks your pores, and removes any grease or grime on your skin. Toner is very helpful for acne prone skin, being that a lot of breakouts stem from greasy skin. Just like any other product, stay away from any toners that have any type of alcohol. Toners will naturally dry your skin but there wont be any moisture lost that you cant give back to your skin in

Current Events Super Bowl 51

By: Brendan Durham Super Bowl 51 will take place in Houston at NRG Stadium and contains the always dangerous New England Patriots against the high scoring offense of the Atlanta Falcons. These are two very different organizations. There is the Patriots who seem to be in the Super Bowl every other year. This will be their 6th Super Bowl appearance in the Belichick-Brady era. The Falcons on the other hand look to win their first Super Bowl championship in franchise history. Brady and his crew have been there and done that, while the dynamic duo of Matt Ryan and Julio Jones are just getting started. The Super Bowl was a surprisingly a defensive battle at first. After the first quarter, the score was knotted at zero. The start of the second quarter was the start of the offensive battle we were all expecting. The Falcons drove it down the field and capped their drive off with a 5 yard touchdown run by running back, Devonta Freeman. 7-0, Falcons on top. Just 4 minutes later, the Falcons scored again on a touchdown pass from Matt Ryan to Austin Hooper. Hooper is the first rookie to catch a touchdown in the Super Bowl since Torry Holt in 2000. The Falcons went up 14-0 and the game was starting to look a little one-sided. The Patriots then in an effort to answer back drove the ball all the way to the redzone. Things were looking up for them until Robert Alford intercepted Tom Brady and returned it 82 yards for a touchdown. 21-0, Falcons. This game was getting out of hand and was looking to be a blowout for sure. The Patriots kicker, Stephen Gostkowski, tacked on a field goal at the end of the first half to make it 21-3 going into the half.

Patriots were revived. They never counted themselves out and they were set to make Super Bowl history. Countering the Falcons drive, Brady and the Pats majestically conducted a 75 yard drive that ended in a James White 5 yard touchdown catch. The PAT was missed and the score was 28-9. The lead still seemed impossible to overcome. The Patriots defense didn’t think so, though. The Falcons next drive was 3 plays for negative 15 yards and they were forced to punt. This was a big turning point. It allowed the Patriots to get the ball and drive down and kick a field goal. The score was now 28-12. Still a big lead, but all of the sudden, it was a 2 possession game. The Falcons got the ball back and looked to score to put the game away. Dont’a Hightower had other ideas. He stripped the ball from Matt Ryan and it was recovered by the Patriots at the Falcons 25 yard line. Tom Brady threw a touchdown pass to Danny Amendola and then the Patriots went for the two-point conversion to make it a one possession game. They ran a direct snap to James White who ran it in to convert it. The score was now 28-20 and all of the sudden, we had a game on our hands. The Falcons were forced to punt and Matt Bosher sure accepted that challenge. His punt pinned the patriots deep in their own territory. They were at their own 9 yard line with with 3:30 left in the 4th quarter. Brady time. They drove down 91 yards and with 57 seconds left James White ran the ball in from a yard out to make it 28-26. The Patriots had to make the two-point conversion to tie the game. They did just that on a screen pass to Danny Amendola. 28-28. What a turn of events. The game when into overtime tied at 28-28. The Patriots won the coin toss and got the ball. They drove down and won the game on a James White touchdown run. The impossible has happened. The Falcons squandered a 25 point lead and the Patriots made history.

At this point, some viewers most likely turned off the game and disconnected from the Super Bowl. This game was all but over. It looked as if the Patriots had no chance. Atlanta Falcons fans all over the world were joyfully enjoying what they just watched in the first half and rejoicing that the Falcons were one half away from their first Super Bowl win in franchise history.

Many records were broken. The Patriots comeback on the Falcons was the biggest in Super Bowl history. Tom Brady broke the Super Bowl records for most passing yards in a game with 466 yards. This was also the first overtime game in Super Bowl history. Super Bowl 51 was an instant classic and will go down as one of the best games in Super Bowl history.

The second half started off a little slow, but then the Falcons got back in rhythm. They put together a marvelous 85 yard drive that resulted in a 6 yard touchdown catch by Tevin Coleman to put the Falcons ahead 28-3. The biggest deficit a team had come back from in the Super Bowl was 10 points and that happened on 3 occasions. The New England Patriots were staring a 25 point game in the face, a game that seemed too far gone. The Patriots didn’t give up, though. Was it Lady Gaga’s halftime show? Were the mumbles from Bill Belichick’s halftime speech finally understood? Was it the charisma, poise, and experience possessed by the legend Tom Brady? Whatever it was, the

Hailey, Idaho By: Rylee Olson

January 31st, 2017, a family in Hailey, Idaho experienced something very unusual. Living in a place which could evidently be called moose country, when the big creature crosses your path you don’t get too surprised and you know exactly what to do and how to handle the situation. When living with the expectations of seeing moose quite often, you don’t think to see them inside your house. So what happens when you walk downstairs and find a cow moose in your basement? This is one

LIFESTYLE of those you’ve-got-to-see-it-to-believe-it kind of things. Blaine County Sheriff ’s Department and officers from Idaho Fish and Game teamed up to try and get the moose out of the house, so they can vouch for the Idaho family! You can image how unreal that phone call must have been.

Norwich terrier- all in the final ring. The Irish setter (named Adrian) took second to Rumor. Judge Thomas Bradley III said: “The German shepherd standard talks about quality and nobility. When you recognize it, it hits you at home, and that’s what it really is. She is just magnificent.” When asked about his decision to choose Rumor for best of show.

“We first attempted to herd the moose up the stairs and out the front door to freedom, but the moose was having none of it, charging the officers several times,” according to the Idaho Fish and Game Facebook page. The moose fell through the window well and ended up trapped in their basement, not wanting to go out the door. Around 3 am on February 1st, 2017, they finally got the moose out of the basement after sedating it. “With all hands on deck, the sleeping giant was carried up the stairs and out the front door,” the Idaho Fish and Game Facebook page added, “It woke up in the snow covered street, groggy and confused, but free.”

But the future looks relaxing. As Boyles has said this is undoubtedly Rumors last major dog show, also making the statement that there could very well be puppies in her near future, possibly beginning a line of “little rumors”. Rumor has now joined the (ironically) named “Manhattan” (who won the show in 1987) as one of only two German Shepherds to ever take best in show at Westminster.

Valentines for Veterans By: Kaya Buckner

What does one do when there’s a cow moose in your basement? You can think of all the things to do to try and get it out, but how do you explain that there’s a moose in the basement of your house? How did it fall through the window? In the state of Idaho, this isn’t too particularly weird, but now the town is on high alert to make sure the windows are bolted enough to make sure no more moose fall through the window. This is an eventful way to start the New Year!

Dawn Bohm’s English classes made Valentines for Veterans who are accepting medical care at three Wisconsin-based veterans’ clinics: the Tomah VA Medical Center, the Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital in Madison and the Zablocki Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Milwaukee.

German Shepard

The students created more than 100 Valentine’s Day cards, mixing their beautiful and imaginative skills. Bohm said students in her class have been creating the valentine’s for over sixteen years. Bohm said. “It’s a simple act that we hope will brighten the day for veterans who have served our country”

A huge comeback for the German Shepard breeds at this year’s Westminster Kennel Club show- the nation’s most luxurious and high class dog show. “Rumor” (named after Adele’s hit song) took best in show. And for a dog coming out of retirement for one last show, we can all agree this is extremely impressive. The crowd cheering loudly al throughout Madison Square garden, noting that this is only the second time since the dog shows founding (1887) that a German Shepard has ever won, making Rumor quite the historical pooch.

Students in Lincoln Elementary, Thomas Jefferson Middle school, and Woodland Elementary also made Valentines for Veterans in the VA hospitals in Lyons and East Orange. Several other schools across the U.S. have made Valentines for Veterans in hospitals as well.

In all honesty this year has been an odd year for sports. From the Cubs, to the Patriots, and now a house pet winning the world most luxurious dog show. “Unbelievable,” handler and co-owner Kent Boyles said.
