These words, in big, bold letters, carved in wood, confront our eyes. Then, in smaller letters, upon a bronze plate, we see:

Yes, we see a stone monument erected-a stone monument -tall, stately, solid. A stone monument with a story to tell. Therefore-We look back upon the history: It had its origin in the vacation trip of Professor R. Hoenecke and his family. The marker, designating the boundary of Minnesota and South Dakota, was noted, a picture was taken, a letter was written, and plans of the marker were received from the government.

And all for what purpose? That we, too, might erect a suitable marker or monument in the entrance to our college.

Thus, plans were presented to the faculty, the "Board," and to the student body. By the end of the year seven hundred-fifty dollars were received.

Work on the new project could begin. A boulevard was made-a boulevard at which the janitors of the school spent much time and hard labor. Next the foundation was laid, and, by the opening day of school, the marker was completed-a monument made of Kasota Stone, supporting a beautifully wood-carved sign. So ends the history. Now ...

We ponder upon the significance: Can we not compare this stone foundation to the firm foundation upon which our College is built, namely, the Word of God? And cannot we compare the light upon this monument to the Light of the Gospel which brings hope and salvation to all? If the foundation crumbles, if the light dims, or goes out entirely, the sign, bearing the words: Dr. Martin Luther College, will fall. So, too, the College will crumble if the Word is not taught in purity, if the truth of the Gospel is dimmed.

Thus, we can look to the monument as a symbol of Strength, Light, and Hope.

OUR CHANGING

WORLD

September Eleventh was a day of much activity at D.M.L.C. There was the registering at the dormitories, unpacking of luggage, buying of books, greeting old friends and meeting new friends and roommates. The campus was certainly alive that day.

How many students will enroll? Will the number exceed that of last year? These were questions which were often heard. Yes, the number does exceed that of last year. There are 418 students this year as compared to 396 last year. The increase between the years '49 and '50 was even greater. The enrollment for 1949was 364, the enrollment for 1950 was 396, and for 1951 it is 418.

This should give you an idea of the increases. Anyone who is familiar with D.M.L.C.knows something must be done to take care of 418 students.

The appearance of the campus has changed considerably in the past year. Because the majority of us have been here during the erection of the new girls' dormitory, "Centennial Hall," there does not seem to be too great a change. Anyone visiting the campus who had not seen it for one or two years would certainly agree that it has 6

changed very much. The absence of many trees plus the addition of the new dormitory accounts for the greatest change. The new D.M.L.C. marker which stands at the Center Street entrance also adds to the appearance of the campus.

The appearance of the campus is not the only change which we have this year. There are many new faces. Not only in the student body but also in the faculty new faces are seen. The new members of the faculty include Prof.

Herbert Sitz, Tutor Hans Jackson, Tutor Jerome Albrecht, and two new piano teachers, Mrs. Nelson and Miss Ruta Jaunzems. Annex also has a new matron, Miss Ethel Giziewski.

Something which is new, and is causing much excitement at the College Heights, is football. For many of the alumni, who had the opportunity to play football, this is not new of course, but for the students of these later years, it is indeed new and different. I wonder if the thrills, spills, and "charlie horses" are different also?

Now that I have mentioned various things which are new or different here at D.M.L.C.,I wish to mention one more thing. Since many changes have taken place this year, why doesn't the student body make one more change and submit some articles to the MESSENGER? In the past years there have been a few articles submitted, after the people were coaxed and pushed along, but why can't articles be by the free will of the students? I would like to ask the student body for cooperation. We know how many students are here. Surely out of 418 students there should be articles to spare for the MESSENGER. Let's not just leave it up to the MESSENGER staff to do everything. After all, it is not only for the MESSENGER staff to read; it is for the students to read. If you can read it, surely you can write something for it. Do not always expect someone else to do everything for you. Come on, let's cooperate so we can make the '50-'51 MESSENGER a real success, something which everyone enjoys reading.

OF A SAILOR'S

WIDOW

Cruel Sea, where is thy justice?

Thou art cause of heartfelt grief.

I feared thee on that Nuptial Day. We've run the race and thou hast won.

Give back to me what thou hast stole.

Canst thou not see the anguish of my heart.

The tearful eye, the languished, melancholy soul.

I laughed, and mocked, and scorned thee.

I vowed thou would not win.

But, 10, thou hast.

I longed to see that day, When men would cease thee as a game.

I was content that we should live on land.

But thou with cunning art enticed him to the sea.

Thy cunning . . . cunning art .Thou took my father and my father's father.

And now thou hast took him.

MARIE

Due to the tremendous stress and strain of studies, etc .. I have been forced to combine two of my--responsibilities shall we say? Hence, I'm letting you in on a bit of my correspondence, a practice of which I don't usually make a habit. The following letter is addressed to Marie Kappelmann, a former member of the MESSENGER staff, who is now teaching at Ixonia, Wisconsin.

Dear Marie, Centennial Hall has finally become our dwelling place.

Tonight, as I sit at my desk for the first time, I thought 10

that you might like to hear what we've been going through since school started this fall.

When we walked into the Administration Building on September 12, I got the impression at first that they had decided to use the "Downtown Girls' Room" for storage.

How quickly my impressions were corrected! Storage indeed! They were using it for storage all right-for the storage of forty girls, together with all their earthly belongings. Those twenty bunk beds seemed to form two complete floors, and we quickly decided who would sleep on first floor, and who would sleep "upstairs." The faculty last no time in informing us that we would move into the new dorm on September 23, (to bolster up our spirits, 1 guess), and so we proceeded to move in and get settled as much as was possible. The old saying, "Like sardines in a can" became our by-word, and the room was soon named "Sardine Hall."

The days, and nights that followed were packed with fun and never-to-be-forgotten experiences. "Now where did I pack my shoes?" I simply must have the iron tonight sometime!" "Aren't you ever going to turn those lights off down there tonight?" "Pull those shades down!!" "I heard you talk in your sleep last night." "Whose alarm went off so early this morning?" "No more hot water, girls."

These, and many more similar phrases, will ring in our ears for many a year.

We were obliged to swing right into the regular run of things in spite of our cramped position in life. 1 say, the regular run of things-with a few alterations. We now had evening chapel with the boys, and it didn't take long before they began taking advantage of the situation.

Result: female organists initiated into boys' chapel. Our library became our study hall, convenient too because of the hand reference material. The gymnasium, already filled with new furniture, now became our "private" closet and pressing room. 'We made the most of the situation, and very few complaints were heard. The only "gripe" 1 can recall at present was the one heard when a cute little mouse decided to share Adele Lau's bed with her. We even saw him perusing her books. But you see, there simply wasn't room for forty-one of us. 1 hope his feelings weren't hurt.

We were unable to move on September 23rd, but on the afternoon of September 27th, armed with brooms, vacuum cleaners, and dust cloths, we entered our new dorm determined to make it liveable. This acomplished, we be~ gan the long-awaited move. With the able assistance of 11

some husky boys, twenty-eight of us were able to get everything moved over here by suppertime. We now occupy the second floor of the west wing. Those girls who were to remain in "Sardine Hall" were promised that they could move on September 30th, and would occupy the first floor. While we were moving, Prof. Schweppe could only shake his head and say, "How could you get all that "stuff" into that one room?" You know, I'm wondering too.

We can't but utter a prayer of thanks to our loving God who has so bountifully blessed this institution.

TELEPHONE CONVERSATION OF MRS. CLICHE JONES "Hello, Agnes? ... This is Cliche. How are you this bright and beautiful morning?

Fit as a fiddle, I trust.

You know, I haven't seen you in a dog's age. Why don't you drop by once in a blue moon? ... Oh; is that a fact! ... No, the children don't have the little rabbit anymore, and I thank my lucky stars for that. Oh, it was cute as a button, but I led a dog's life because of it. If it wasn't at one thing, it was at another ... John took it to the pet shop ... Oh, you did it! It was a shame. The children almost had kittens because of it, but they recovered in fine style. A few minutes ago they romped off for the Saturday matinee, eager beavers that they are ....

Do tell, I haven't seen her in a month of Sundays. How is she?

Spry as ever, I'll wager ... Oh, isn't that sweet? ... Well, I really must be running now, Agnes. Time flies and I haven't a bite to eat in the house. John will be home soon, hungry as a bear, and I won't have the supper ready ...

Really! ... It was really so delightful to talk to you, my dear. Do give me a ring soon. I'll be sitting on pins and needles till I hear from you. Goodbye."

STUDENTS AND PICNICS When in the course of a school's events, it becomes necessary for the various classes to separate themselves from all other classes for the purpose of a "Class Picnic" the entire schedule of the school is thrown out of whack. ]2

N OW a class picnic is a gathering of all the members of a certain class. It is instigated by that certain subversive group that is found in every class. Their method is fairly simple, a meeting is called for "something important," the president allows a motion to be made and then everyone asks where the picnic is going to be. After the question of the date is settled, the greater mass of the students dismissed and the executive body of the group go to work. It is at this time that many personal grudges are settled, for the work is none other than the picking of committees. Soon the officers, working with their usual deadly efficiency, have the various committees chosen.

The members are each informed of the duties and punishments involved, and then, as soon as each one "kicks in," the picnic is ready to be held.

A practical example will help to show a student's role in the picnic. Our hero is bashful, so he shall receive the fictitious name of Herkimer.

Now Herky was not too suspicious of the insistent person who asked him for his contribution to the common welfare, so soon his name was put on the list of those going on the outing. On the day of the event he cheerfully gave up a badly needed practice period, and with a few other of his group ventured out into the wilderness of Flandreau State Park. On arriving, he is immediately put into a group to play games. After hours of strenuous play under heartless leaders, Herky is so near collapse that he finally is given permission to go to supper.

Lunch and the following events are so blurred in our hero's mind that a coherent recital of them is impossible.

So we leave Herkimer, our willing picnicker, deep in his luxurious bunk waiting for the first bell.

A SCHOLAR'S SOLILOQUY In Shakespeare's Hamlet we find one very important speech made by Hamlet during one of his moods. At this time, the II Normal class is determining whether Hamlet is sane or insane. Here is a student's version of the same problem, and we ask you to determine whether or not it is reasonable. But we might take the middle course that Shakespeare took when he said: "Though this be madness yet there is method in it." , J3

To study, or not to study-that is the question. Whether 'tis more profitable to sit on needles and pins until the professor has passed your name in the alphabet, or to sit and "grease" until you know your chapters from the first word to the last.

To pay attention,-to sleep,-Which one?

And by a sleep to say we end Our headaches and give the professor a thousand natural shocks when he sees us; 'Tis a pastime eagerly to be enjoyed.

To pay attention-to sleep,To sleep! perchance to be shown the door! ay, there's the rub; For when we sleep in class what results may come When we have shuffl'd out the door And there we must pause: there's the reason That makes us sit attentively in class; For that cause we will listen all the time, Take down notes, copy sentences from the board, Raise our hands to answer difficult questions, Bend over our books when a test is coming up And patiently write away on our tests When we would rather make our quietus (end) to that exam By going out the door before we even start.

Which student would bear all these burdens, To toil and sweat over History, English, Algebra, and Psychology, But that the dread of being quietly dismissed from our good, old campus, And going into the big, wide world Nevermore to return, makes us feel ill And rather buckle down to work Than fly to other work we know not of?

Thus conscience does make cowards of us all; And therefore all our fond resolutions Are cast aside, when another huge assignment comes along.

Our beautiful daydreams of some day doing nothing at all Are, like bubbles, broken in a moment When another bell rings and off to another class we go.

Joanne Sievert, H.S. '49, of Gibbon, Minn. was married to Eulin Dreier of Gibbon on September 16, 1950. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Rhode in St. Peter's Lutheran Church.

Karleen Brinkmann, H.S. '48, and Paul Schwartz, '49, were married in Chaseburg, Wis. on June 17, 1950. The Schwartzes now live in Green Lake, Wis. Helen Klug, '49, was united in marriage with Win Nommenson on June 25, 1950. He is a graduate of our seminary at Thiensville.

Rhoda Schroeder, ex '42, and Donald Heidmann of Algoma, Wis. were united in holy wedlock on August 26, 1950. The Heidmanns have made their home in Algoma.

Verna Birkholz, ex '43, and Elmer Abendroth were married in Mankato, on June 3, 1950. They now reside in Waterloo, Wis. Harold Goede, '47, and his wife, Betty, became the proud parents of a boy, named Ned Harold, on July 7, 1950.

The Rev. and Mrs. E. C. Schmelzer have a daughter, Catherine Margaret, since July 15, 1950. Mrs. Schmelzer, nee Chrysta Albrecht, graduated in 1948.

The Robert Schierenbecks of St. James, Minn. became the parents of a boy, James, on August 15, 1950. Mr. Schierenbeck is a '45 graduate.

A BRIEF BIOGRAPHY OF PERCY, THE PEST This is an excerpt from the life history of someone you all know intimately.

He (or she) is in every class without exception. He may have almost any name, but in my story I shall call him Percival, the Library Pest, or Percy, the Plague, or just plain Percy.

Everyone on the campus knows him. The librarians know him. Percy checks out his book but never can remember to check it in again. He visits the library frequently, glancing through books and magazines, and then leaving them scattered around to be put away by others who are not as busy as he. He carelessly leaves his chair anywhere near the tables, so that people going by think they are running an obstacle course. The library hours are from 7 :45 to 12 :00 and from 1 :00 to 4 :00. All the other bookworms know what these hours are, but not Percy.

At one minute to four Percy suddenly remembers a topic. he forgot to look up, and, of course, the librarian must wait and help him with it.

The teacher also knows Percy. He is the never has the extra books read on time, although ly has more time than anyone else. He wastes reading unnecessary books and then complains classes require too much extra reading.

His classmates know him best of all. Percy, the Plague, checks out books in their name, and then they are blamed for not returning the books on time and must pay the fine. Percy is known to them as the "book hoarder."

You know when there is only one copy of a book which 16

must be read by an entire class in a week, who is the one that rushes to the library, knocks his opponents down in the scramble, grabs it out of the hand of the unlucky student who happened to spy it first, and then checks it out for himself? Yes, it is our old friend, Percy. What happens? (Silly question.) No one else can use it, for some don't know who has the book, and the others have given up trying to get it.

Time passes, and then finally in one last desperate attempt, someonesecretly raids Percy's place, and finds the book, yet unused, under a stack of overdue books. The book must be read by the next day. Somehow everyone gets it at least partially read in time for class. Did I say "everyone?" Excuse me, I meant "everyone-except Percy," and many are his excuses for not knowing the content.

And so Percy's life goes; again and again the same incidents occur. But what is Percy's real name? Is this a biography of you? Are you Percy, the Plague?

Sitting at a table with an elderly lady were four young sprouts who wished more than anything that she wouldfinish and leave. They hit upon this plan: First fellow: "I promised my girl I'd take a bath Saturday night. It'll be exactly a year since I had one last."

Second fellow: "Well, then I guess I'll change my socks. I threw them up to the ceiling last night and one stuck for five minutes."

Third fellow: "Youse boids sound like convoits. I ain't been in a tub for three years. I love doit."

She : "Would one of you stinkers kindly pass me the sugar?"-Ex.

On Tuesday, September 12, the strains of "We All Believe in One True God" reverberated through the halls as each and everyone, parents, faculty, and students alike, lifted up his voice in prayer and praise to Him who giveth all. Thus the 1950-51 School Year of Dr. Martin Luther College began.

Mr. Herbert Sitz was installed as professor of history and English while the new tutors, Mr. Jerome Albrecht and Mr. Hans Jackson, were also accepted as members of the faculty.

A total of four-hundred students were enrolled, each coming from a separate city, a separate state, or a separate section of the country. They soon became, however, one body, working and cooperating together, not just in the classroom but in the outside activities as well.

Probably the greatest of all activity was found in the girls' room where forty of the two hundred forty-six girls bunked together for two weeks, until the new dormitory was completed sufficiently for occupancy.

The Luther Literary League, under the able leadership of Robert Landvatter, again sponsored the Get-Acquainted Picnic at which time the entire student body met on the athletic field for fun and frolic. We hope that this will

become an annual occurrence and that the League will continue to be active throughout the year.

A short time later, under the direction of Eldon Hirsch, the Marlut Singers began their rehearsals for the forth coming November concert.

Excitement, too, reigned supreme during "try-outs" for First Band and First Choir. Then came the organization and rehearsal of all band and chorus groups.

Even more activity was to be found in the "Annual Staff Election." Hi, everybody. I thought that by this time everyone would have that old zest for bucking again. However, to my amazement (?) I found that that isn't the case. On my quarterly visit to the rooms of the dorm, I saw that most of the boys still like to take life easy. Their reply to my inquiry for locals was usually, "I can't think of anything now." There were some who had begun the thinking process again, and to them I am very grateful.

As usual, and this year is no exception, there are many new and bewildered faces among us. A few have already been searching diligently for the long-lost "Sieben Bucher."

The traditionally lost fuchs has also turned up. One fuchs had to ask directions back to college after attending a movie alone. Let's all be patient with them, though; remember: you were once in their shoes.

Has anyone seen a lion about the campus? Gordon Eggers thought he heard one the other night. Gordon was already in bed when he heard a strange noise which made him jump out of bed and run into the study room yelling, "A lion, a lion!" To his surprise he found out it was only the fire siren.

That same fire siren had another effect on Harry Kuszmaul. His reaction was to run for shelter because he thought the Russians were attacking.

Among those who have recovered from the summer vacation and are ready to study again is Loran Fuhrman.

The other night when Loran was already in dreamland, he suddenly sat upright in bed and said, "My book! My book!"

The moral: you have nightmares when you study too much.

With the beginning of a new school year we also find in our midst two older, yet unfamiliar, faces. These could be none other than the two tutors, Mr. Jerome Albrecht and Mr. Hans Jackson.

So far they have been kept busy chaperoning class picnics.

Breakfast in bed!! No, but I bet that's what "Bunsie" Hookstead thought when he found his bed full of Rice Krispies the other night. As yet the culprit hasn't been caught, has he, Buchholz?

Have you ever tried ploughing with a heifer, especially someone else's heifer?

For a lot of us it wouldn't be a new experience, and if you don't believe me just ask Werner Roekle. Werner tried it in class one day and found the going rather rough.

Irwin Seifert, who is a great friend of E. Power Biggs (?), has done it again. This time Irwin must have thought he had whiskers growing on his teeth-or why would he have used shaving cream instead of tooth paste??

Have you ever seen Arvin Peter blush? Just remind him of what a certain Professor told him in class, and I'm sure he'll blush for you. It seems Arvin was having a good time with a certain Miss when he was told to wait until after class to play with her.

The dormitory is a little more quiet this year. Graduation last spring marked the end of the "Six Fatheads" so the reign of "Tanta Anna" ended too. However, a few of the first normal boys have taken over this year, and Mr. "Dry Bones" now reigns supreme.

Val Jean Zoellmer shouldn't have to brush his teeth for awhile now. "Blimp" took the inopportune time to brush his teeth when the water was shut off. After an afternoon with a mouthful of toothpaste, he really has that "Colgate smile.'

Boys will always be clumsy, I guess, or else one fuchs was trying to bowl. Returning to his table after shagging food, he had the misfortune of rolling the meatballs all over the table. Did you get a strike or a spare, Fuchs?

It seems William Winterstein has great business acumen. "Joe" brought a T-shirt along to 1hy Ed class to sell.

The question now is: Did "Joe" bring it to Prof. Oldfield's class by chance or was he just making a practical application of last year's psychology.

Every morning we co-eds wake up and mutter, "Oh that bell!" So our day begins. During each of these days there are those little incidents that make life interesting.

Let's just take a peek into the dormitories to see what goes on.

In Annex Hall, Lois Buss, "Gorgeous George," has become used to living a perfumed life. Her roommates gave her every "scent" they had. She probably had pleasant dreams, but the perfume was safely locked away in suitcases so that Lois couldn't repay the favor.

Bode Hall girls had a little picnic on their first Friday here. They had a "splendid" meal and then they had a family portrait taken. How does it feel to be "Pa," Ruthie?

Who is the lucky co-edwho can come in at 10:30 to find that her bed is ready for her to jump into? It seems that Marilyn Radtke found out that things aren't so easy. She had artificial bedbugs and angleworms waiting for her.

She doesn't scare easily!

On my way through Hillcrest, I always had the answer, "Nothing happens here. Anyway, not yet." The only one who disagrees is Myrna.

Here is a new way to cool off when you're angry.

Take your "favorite friend's" pictures from your dresser top and put them in the dresser until you are in a better mood. A girl from third floor Annex gives this suggestion.

Did you hear of the West Hall fire?

When the girls came back from dinner one day, they found the dorm filled with smoke. The "fire" was only coming from a little source and didn't take long to put out.

When rules were given out at Bode Hall, one of the girls was very confused.

The rule: Two baths a week.

Janet thought that only two girls could take a bath each week. I hope someone explained the rule to her.

If you've never liven under crowded condition, ask Mary Anderson about its problems.

She couldn't find a place to hang her hair, so she decided to put it on. Good decision r How well can sleep-talkers get?

Lois Gose and Carmen Bode hold conversations in their sleep, according to their roommates.

If anyone can out-do that, will he please report it?

The Waldheim girls tell the story of the "Little Lost Bat." They caught the poor, little creature one night and put it into a box. Trudy, generous soul, had plans for donating it to the science department, but she finally let it out into the wide, open spaces.

SPORTS Before starting with this year's sports, let's look back and see how our last year's sports season was rounded off.

Baseball-Our college baseball team ran into some rather stiff competition, ending up the season with 9 losses as against 0 wins. The high school squad did quite a bit better, winning 4 games while losing none. With a year's experience behind them, our college team should be able to have a better season next spring.

Intramural-When all the points were totaled after last year's inter-class battles, it was found that, in the boys' division, the I Normal "Cobs" came out on top to cop the trophy with 39 points. Second place went to the Juniors with 27 points, the III Normals and Seniors tied for third with 9.6noints each, and the II Normals came in fourth with 7 points: In the girls' division, the trophy went to the Juniors by virtue of their 27 points. The other classes that placed in the race were the I Normals with 22 points; II Normals, 17; Sophomores, 14; III Normals, 10; and Seniors, 10.

Art Schulz was elected as last year's leading athlete and hence had his name engraved on the Seifert trophy, which is in the library, and was given the Herff'-Jones award. As most of you will recall. the outstanding athlete is selected at the end of each school year, and is chosen for his scholarship, cooperation, participation and sportsmanship.

So much for last year.

As for this year's intramural program, it will closely follow the pattern of preceding years both in the boys' and girls' divisions. The boys' baseball tournament is in full swing now, and the rest of the sports will follow as was the case last year.

Basketball-The eager prospects are fairly bright both for the collegeand high schoolsquads. The lettermen back for the college team include W. vtterstatter, W. Lueders, P. Kock, L. bruns, B. Otterstatter, and R. Manthe. Three lettermen from last year's high school squad will also be seeking berths on the collegeteam this year. They are D. Hartwig, R. Kramer and G. Synhorst. With all this material available, Coach Oldfield thinks he should be able to. have a good team for the coming basketball battles.

The high schoolalso has six lettermen back, namely O. Guth, D. Gutzke, L. Borgschatz, W. Voigt, F. Kolander and M. Meihack. These players, together with some of the boys from last year's "B" squad, should be able to come through with quite a few victories. Practice for both teams is scheduled to begin in the middle of October. Good luck, fellows.

He is called a tornado because he comes at the most unexpected times, hits the most unexpected places, and leaves everything a wreck behind him. He is a growing animal with superlative promise, to' be fed, watered, and kept warm, a juy forever, a periodic nuisance, the prublem of our times, the hope of a nation. Boys faithfully imitate their dads in spite of all efforts to' teach them good manner!".

:: EDITORIALS :: TRUE CHRISTMAS SPIRIT At this time many people are looking forward to the day which commemorates Christ's birthday. Indeed, it is a day which we should look forward to. But let us not forget why we look forward to it.

When we look about our worldly world, we surely see no indication that we celebrate Christ's birthday on December 25th. This is a booming period for the businessmen. Some advertise and promote business sales in nearly any manner, just so they can gain material wealth. You see such things as "Visit our Santa Claus Store," "Buy such and such a gift and make your son the happiest boy in the world." Nearly all the advertisements are of such a worldly nature. Even the Jew, who does not believe Christ was born, uses this day to gain material wealth.

Why do people buy gifts at Christmas time? It seems as if they merely want to keep up with the "Joneses."

Many people have money nowadays. They say, "You can't take it with you," so they go on a buying spree and buy many extravagant articles. If you would ask them why they buy such gifts, they would probably say, "It is a custom at Christmas." They would be correct to a certain extent, but they do not know that it is a custom to remind us of the gifts which God gave us, namely, His Son, Jesus Christ.

Nearly everyone has a Christmas tree decorated with lights and ornaments. Does he know why he does this?

He would probably say again, "It is only a custom." He would not know that the evergreen tree denotes life and that it points to heaven. Neither would he know that the lights remind us of Christ's birth at Bethlehem at which night the stars shone so brightly and that God is a lamp unto our feet. The ornaments would not remind him of what Christ gives him, as they should.

These worldly people utter such prayers as, "Dear Lord, be good to Santa Glaus. He has been so good to me.

Dear Lord, please do! Amen." This is called a child's prayer. Maybe the worldly people call it a child's prayer but a Christian surely would not.

In addition to their worldly actions they come with songs such as, "Santa Claus is Coming to Town," "All I 3

Want for Christmas is my Two Front Teeth," and many others of such character. Are these connected with Christ 'I No, rather they are connectedwith Santa Claus They teach good works with the result that Santa Claus will give them something, maybe a whip if they do one little thing wrong.

(I believe it could be used in some cases.)

Let us not be influenced by these worldly actions. Remember what Christmas really is. God,through His grace, has given us Christ, the Savior. He promised us a Savior and He carried out that promise that man might be saved.

When we prepare for Christmas, be sure to prepare for Christ's birthday, not for a custom. We have very much to be thankful for. Christ came to save sinners. If He had not comewe would all be lost and condemnedcreatures.

Surely if we keep this in mind, we shall have a true Christmas in which we give all thanks and glory to God for our Savior, and not only a gift-exchanging Christmas. e •

TRIMMING

THE TREE

I happen to be one of those people who is known as the "baby of the family." Since I was born last. I naturally was the last one to leave home. That means that when it gets to be time to trim the Christmas tree, no one but me is around to do it. SoooThe only thing I don't have to do is set up the tree.

Our tree is always so large, and I do mean large, that I couldn't possibly put it up alone. We never have to sit and look at a frayed toothpick for our tree. We are always fortunate in having one that reaches to the ceiling of our livingroom and is so thick and full that it's impossible to see through it.

After the tree has been dragged around the house, across the porch, and into the livingroom, it takes about half an hour just to set it up, turn it round and round to decide which side of the tree is most presentable, and fasten it so it won't fall over. The next step is to climb the two flights of stairs to the attic and dig around among another year's accumulation of odds and ends and pull out the two large boxes of decorations. Naturally, these two boxes require two trips up and down the two flights. Once these boxes are unpacked, they reveal about a dozen more boxes of ornaments and do-dads. I'm ready to string the lights.

Oh, oh, I just forgot something. These lights have to be tested first. With the newer type of lights this job isn't very hard. However, when we had the kind that went out entirely when one bulb burned out, that was when my patience sometimes failed me. Now that the lights are in good working order, I perch on top of our kitchen ladder and try to get the lights on the most inconvenient branches.

That's because they look best on the branches that are hardest to reach. When I get this far, I wonder what the finished product will look like because right now it looks like all open gaps and wires.

My next step is to go into the kitchen and pop some popcorn. No, this isn't to eat. I put it on the tree. It's almost becomea tradition, that is, if something can become traditional in the course of four or five years, in our family, to have popcorn on our tree. We aren't satisfied to string it like you're probably thinking we do. I pour a bit of syrup onto a saucer, take a kernel of corn, dip it into the syrup, place it on the tip of a branch, and hope that it sticks to the tree instead of on my finger. It means a lot of time, patience, and moving of the chair or ladder, but if I put enough on, it really does look pretty. The ornament boxes then have to be untied and opened for inspection. Most of the hooks are usually out and one or two are sometimes found to be broken when the box is opened.

Wonder how that happened? You may not oelieve it, but some of the ornaments we hang on our tree year after year formerly hung on my grandfather's tree. A few of them even have candle wax on them. These and the little old gold baskets and the three little tinkling bells I like to put in prominent places. But there are some ornaments that never get lost or broken. Worse luck! These cherished (but not by me) possessions I usually manage to hang in back where nobody could possibly see them. The final step is to put on the sparkling tinsel, being sure to drape it gracefully from one branch to another-just as inconvenient as putting on the lights.

At last I'm ready to turn on the tree lights and step back, being careful not to stumble over the scattered boxes, and admire my work of art. Yes, if I must say so myself, and I must, we always have a beautiful Christmas tree (thanks to my aching back, sticky fingers, and scratched hands and arms) and all our holiday guests have to admit it.

A NEW START

The snow was falling softly out of a perfectly dark night, but since it was Christmas Eve, the snow was only traditional. The little midwestern town was dotted with warm streaks of light coming from houses filled with happy people. The church bells rang and sent their music 6

out over the surrounding farmlands.

At the edge of town, near the creek and beside the railroad tracks, was the "Jungle" where the transients stayed between rides. Now the Jungle was almost empty because of the cold, but under an improvised shanty were three "'knights of the road." Huddled around a fire the great differences in their faces could be seen. One was a gray, old man who talked with a whining tone, he owed his present position to an addiction to the bottle. The next figure was a strong, middle-aged man who liked everything but work. The third was just a boy running away from a broken home.

The middle-aged man spoke first.

"Let's make a promise among us to go to work and make something of ourselves. Here it's Christmas and we have to sit out here in the Jungle."

The old man said, "I've seen better days and I want to see them again."

The boy spoke, "I've got to make good so I can go back to my home town."

"Then it's decided.

Let's all turn in now."

The hours went on; the snow stopped falling and the temperature went steadily down. On Christmas morning the people greeted each other, glad to be alive on such a bright morning.

Down where the creek ran beside the railroad tracks, three motionless forms lay, cold and calm, started on a new adventure.

THE GREATEST GIFT 'Tis Christmas, the season of the year when trees are bought and decorated, when Christmas programs are presented, when carols are sung, when gifts are given. But what is the greatest gift of all?

It was one o'clock, on a beautiful Sunday afternoon in October (October 29), when twenty of us, together with Professor Backer, made our way into the Dr. Martin Luther College bus.

Our destination: St. Peter, 7

Our purpose: To sing in the church service conducted in the institution at St. Peter, by the Rev. Mr. Wehausen. it is he who visits the mentally ill, weekly, bringing them the Gospel.

Arriving on the grounds about two o'clock, we were led to the gymnasium or auditorium where the service was to be held. It was not an elaborate building. This was not important. Slowly we made our way onto the stage.

At two-thirty the service began. Ruth Wehausen, the organist, or rather the pianist, played the opening prelude.

Small hymn books were passed out to the congregation.

Could they sing? Did they realize the faith which they were professing as they sang, "What a Friend We Have in Jesus ?" Many did. You could see it in the expression of their eyes. Others became restless, could little comprehend what was going on about them. Maybe, someday, they too will realize that they were hearing the Word of God. The sermon text was the story of the Ten Lepers.

Would many of those in the congregation also be healed through faith in Jesus Christ and give thanks to Him for His boundless love and mercy?

As we left the chapel, we pondered; we wondered what the words in the hymns, "I Love to Tell the Story" and "Stand Up, Stand Up for Jesus," meant to them-the hymns which we had just finished singing together with them.

We felt fortunate that we were shown how many of the twenty-five hundred patients in this institution lived. Taken through the numerous wards of the young, the old, the extremely emotional, the violent, and the crippled, we realized how richly Godhad blessed us, giving us a sound mind and a sound body. But this was not all.

Having witnessed the effect which the Gospel had on so many of these people, we came to the full realization of the power of the Word.

Now 'tis Christmas!

Him who giveth all-the vation in Christ Jesus.

OF CHRISTMAS

CAROLS

Of the various elements of Christmas pleasure, none is more pure, real or uplifting than the privilege of singing the old, familiar Christmas carols which old and young alike love and which make us, once again, all children. Great volumes of the hymns of Christmas are at our disposal.

Some of them are unworthy: of their place, but many also bring the old story and true faith into our joyful hearts as "the Happy Christmas comes once more."

Perhaps the most widely used carol is "Silent Night, Holy Night." The story of its origin is beautiful. On a clear, starry Christmas Eve, among all the joyous festivities, the home of Joseph Mohr was filled with great sorrow, for on that day the wife and mother had gone to celebrate Christmas in heaven. Mr. Mohr sat with bowed head.

Going to the window he looked upon the snow-clad beauty of the Austrian Alps, while in an adjoining room he could see his motherless children quietly sleeping. Just then he thought he heard merry voices singing the very song the whole family were wont to sing. The thought suddenly came to him that the mother was singing these words and blending her voice with the angels: "Silent Night! Holy Night!

All is calm, all is bright, Round yon Virgin Mother and Child!

Holy Infant, so tender and mild, Sleep in heavely peace.

Sleep in heavenly peace."

He quickly sat down and penned the well known "Stille Nacht." which told others the story that "Christ, the Savior, is born." Early the next morning, Christmas Day, Mohr hurried to Franz Gruber, the church organist, with his song. Gruber was thrilled with the verses and composed the melody for it. It was sung in the little village of Salzburg by four sisters, known as the "Strasser Quartette," and later sung by them in Leipzig. So it was brought to Germany and finally today this beautiful carol is sung all over the world.

Speaking of angels in the story of "Silent Night," reminds us of another carol in which the angels proclaim the Messiah's birth: "Hark! the herald-angels sing, 'Glory to the new-born King; Peace on earth, and mercy mild, God and sinners reconciled!'"

The great master, Mendelssohn, put these words to music, and now this carol stands out as one of our favorites.

Another beloved Christmas carol, commonly attributed to Martin Luther, is the "Cradle Hymn," a sweet lullaby that delights children throughout the world: "Away in the manger, no crib for His bed, The little Lord Jesus laid down His sweet head; The stars in the sky looked down where he lay The little Lord Jesus, asleep on the hay."

Luther, who was a poor miner's son, was born in Eisleben, Germany, in 1483. He used to sing under the windows of poor people at Christmas time; and bestowed with an unusual gift of composing both music and words to suit children's tastes, his songs, without exception are at an early age soon learned and sung. He wrote this song for his small son, Hans (John), for a Christmas Eve festival in 1530.

LATE AGAIN A unique sight it is that a trained observer sees while watching the belated stragglers come groping into the dining hall to a delicious nourishing breakfast of Corn Soya or Krumbles, Mr. X is a typical example. The early comers have already been devouring their cereal for four or five minutes before he puts in his shining appearance. Shining his countenance is indeed, just as the beautiful morning sun looks when viewed through a thick, murky overcast of black rainclouds.

His belt has been left unbuckled and his oversized shoes come sloshing in behind him. He has his unshapely, discolored sweatshirt on backwards so that it has the turtle neck appearance from the front while that daring, plunging neckline shamelessly reveals his bumpy backbone from the rear. He doesn't wear a jacket because this would prevent him from dipping his dirty shirtsleeves into the rich milk in his cup while he ravenously devours the tasty Grape-Nuts he dumped into his neighbor's cup by mistake.

A few hours later the same Mr. X is seen walking jauntily into the Ad. Building for his day's work.

forms a perfect combination with his neatly pressed gray trousers.

His figured, flashing red necktie reflects his enthusiasm in the search for knowledge. Finally, the highly polished shoes and neat, white socks complete the picture of a typical college man.

ARE YOU WITH US? Twenty cents; it used to be a dime! What are they made of-gold?

How many of you caught yourselves saying this after it was announced that the fee lor cheerleading outfits would amount to twenty cents this year? Yet, when you stop to figure out the price of six pairs of slacks and six shirts you find it amounts to more than a dime per person. There will, however, be a sum remaining until next year.

Now that you have given up your last twenty pennies from your piggy bank, why don't you get your share of enjoyment from it? You all know it's no fun cheering by yourself when everyone around you may be eating Jumbo's, commenting on the good-looking players of the opposing team, or deciding who made the most mistakes in the last band number. Instead of supporting the boys during the game, they wonder after the game why our boys lost.

There has been a great deal of dissatisfaction regarding the attendance of so few college students at the high school games. Also, we are trying to introduce something new and interesting at every pep fest. A larger attendance would be appreciated, as would any suggestions.

Let's all give our whole-hearted support this year. With everybody cheering enthusiastically at the games and attending the pep fests, we can make this an outstanding basketball season for the coaches, teams, and you.

Mary Ann Barnes and Dennis Beussman, '48, were united in marriage on October 13, 1950, at Zion English Ev. Lutheran Church, Center Line, Michigan.

A son, Quentin Mark, was born to Mr. and Mrs. Quentin Albrecht, '47, on August 15, 1950,but died about two hours after birth. The baby was born on the train enroute from LaCrosse, Wis., to Snoqualmie, Wash.

Mr. and Mrs. Carl Diebert, nee Doris Mehlber, ex '47, are the proud parents of a daughter, Karla Jean, born October 2, 1950.

A son, Micheal Herbert, was born to Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Wittenberg on May 7, 1950. Micheal's mother is the former Beata Moldenhauer, '36. The Wittenbergs live in Wisconsin Rapids, Wis. Sarah Ruth arrived at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Kermit Stevenson of Milwaukee on July 29. Mrs. Stevenson is the former Ruth Schnitker, '35.

A daughter, Ruth Annette, was born to Mr. and Mrs. A. C. Schapehahm of New Ulm, Minn., on May 9. The former Martha Seehusen, '28, is Ruth's mother.

Scherzer of Bay City, Michigan.

Mr. and Mrs. Richard Press, of Wayne, Michigan, are the proud parents of a son, Mark Jon, born on September 14. Mrs. Press is the former Lois Vertz, ex '48.

The government official in charge of agriculture had instructed the old farmer to collect his stock of every description and have it branded. "I suppose that's all right," sighed the farmer, "but honest, Mister, I'm going to have an awful time with those bees."

Notes and News on Books THE OLD AND THE NEW Unlike people, good books do not die with the passing years. Their content is as much of a joy to enthusiastic readers of today as they were to our grandparents many, many years ago. Old books have a distant enchantment which is hard to equal; whereas the new books have a fascinating realism. Novels, biographies, history, science, mysteries, short stories-old and new,-provide a variety which is stimulating, refreshing, and relaxing, and even profitable.

Some old books are preserved because of their age and valuable content. A set of books like this has been recently donated to the library. It is four hundred years old, made by one of the earliest printing presses. These books, containing some of the first printed writings of Luther, were donated by Martin and Ernest Eyrich of New Ulm on October 17 in memory of the one-hundredth anniversary of the birth of their father, a late pastor. This eight-volume set is bound with wooden covers overlaid with parchment and fastened with metal clasps. Between the covers are Luther's writings, decorated with lettering and pictures made with finely carved woodcuts. These old books were printed in Jena about 1566, and yet they are in good condition today.

Although Charles Dickens was a nineteenth century writer, his stories have not become old-fashioned. His distinctive descriptive ability is not surpassed by any other writer. David Copperfield and Tale of Two Cities are only two of his famous works. A story almost everyone has 14

read is Dicken's Christmas Carol. If you enjoyed this, read some of his other Christmas stories, such as "The Chimes," and "The Haunted Man and the Ghost's Bargain."

They are especially suitable for this season of the year.

"I hate to read biographies" is a common complaint but many of these grumblers do not know what they are saying. Their complaint is usually based on a snap judgment which they formed after the first paragraph of a dull biography.

From them on even the name "biography" filled them with a dread antipathy for that type of book.

Immortal Magyar by Frank G.. Slaughter is a new book which I assumed would be dry. I dreaded to examine this "dull" biography, but after the first page, I was reading it because I wanted to. When the lights were switched off seventy pages later, I was surprised that time and pages had passed so quickly, and I was impatient for the time when I could continue. (My flashlight was burned out, so I knew I would have to wait until morning.)

Immortal Magyar was much better than many fiction books. It tells the story of a man's fight to conquer infection in surgery.

He met opposition and persecution, but he continued his lonely struggle in this book which is written with warmth and understanding.

Many students like adventure stories. Richard Halliburton experienced his adventures before he wrote them in story form. One of his books, New Worlds to Conquer, is an exciting story of his escapades in Peru. When his own experiences run thin, he entwines legends and true tales to keep your interest at all times. Mystery, romance, humor, and cruelty are all smoothly interwoven into one fascinating story. The book also gives accurate geographical information, local color, and "meat on the bone" stories.

A World to Win is a modern, realistic story. It vividly portrays the intrigue, personal ambitions, and human emotions behind World War II. Lanny Budd, posing as a wealthy millionaire art collector, travels in many countries to get "behind the scenes" information. He brings to light the unbelievable duplicity, selfishness, and greed among the leaders of modern-day countries. Many of you might enjoy reading this new story by Upton Sinclair.

Enjoy your Christmas vacation by reading one of these books or some other which you have always wanted to read. Select a good story for companionship on a quiet afternoon. Whether it is old or new, if it is a good book, it will have a strange attraction that leads you on to the very end.

'Twas weeks before Christmas And all through the college Every creature was stirring In search for more knowledge; Yet, impending events Were planned with great care.

Now they've made history; They're recorded here: The Early pays On Sunday, October 29, a group of twenty students, from the First Choir, were privileged to sing in the church service conducted in the institution at St. Peter by the Rev. Mr. Wehausen.

A few days late, fun and frolic filled the air when friends and fellow-classmates played numerous games and feasted upon sandwiches, doughnuts, hot chocolate, and ice cream, at the traditional Halloween Parties held on October 30, 31, and November 1.

An introduction to the aesthetics in life was found and enjoyed by all who were able to hear the Minneapolis Philharmonic Symphony under the direction of Anton Dorati, at Gustavus Adolphus College,on Sunday, November 5.

Then came the much awaited Mid-Semester vacation (Nov. 10-14), thus ending this first period in the history of college events which we are scanning.

The Middle Ages With a renewed vigor, activities were again resumed.

It was during these weeks, that pictures were taken despite ]6

frigid weather for our nnual, Excelsior, that numerous staff meetings were held to decide upon the theme, ana.that money was collected fro each person to make this edition a complete success.

Too, the Luther Lit rary League displayed its greatest activity. The members participated in community singing and witnessed a thrilli g, "blood-curdling" Shadow Play.

During these weeks als , they prepared for, and presented their biggest productio , "The Brain Storm," a three-act comedy under the direc ion of Tutor Jackson and Robert Landvatter. The cast i eluded the following great actors of the stage: Arden W ntzel, Ronald Pape, Marvin Busse, William Birsching, Don ld Holzhueter, Robert Landvatter, Jarice Manthe, Kathryn Hindered, Naomi Nitz, Joan Borchert, Dorothy Goelz, L ya Ihde, Lois Miller, Myrna Guenther, Betsy Sitz, Gordo Synhorst, Ursel Seidl, and Ruth Albrecht.

With the approach f the basketball season, the necessity for the election of c eerleaders was realized. Marjorie Fairchild, Donald Holzh eter, Curtis Hagen (High School leaders), Ruth Albrecht Janet Schmidt, and Loren Schulz (Collegeleaders) were c osen to cheer our teams to victory.

The came the elirna and end to this era of activityThanksgiving Day! The Latter Weeks With the passing Thanksgiving, music came forth as the predominating urriculum of these weeks. Many were able to hear Phil pitalny and his All-Girl Orchestra and Choir. Others, hav ng Community Concert tickets, enjoyed the singing of EI na Nikolaidi, a contralto.

But the greatest in erest was shown in the preparation and presentation of the Band Concert assisted by the Marlut Singers and Aeolian Chorus.

This completed, all thoughts turned to the Christmas season. Christmas pa ies were held, the halls and auditorium of the administ ation building were decorated, and carols were sung by the Marluts and Aeolian Chorus.

Now, with only a f w days left in this period of time, there still remains one ore event, the last of the historical happenings in this era f college life. Yes, the Christmas Concert, at which the t ue, full meaning of Christmas is so greatly expressed and r alized.

We've really "lived" every minute of our school up here in Centennial, Annex, Waldheim, West Hall, fd Bode. This time we have so many things to say in C -ed Notes, but I'm afraid we can't get everything in. We'll try!

Halloween Sidelights-In Hillcrest some girls decided to give some member the Halloween patrol a little excitement. It's too bad t at the pail of water they poured out the window missed bout a foot. Many of the girls coming back from the .ifferent parties really had some (fantastic?) surprises. *J udy Tiede found a dead mouse under her pillow and Be y Buss found mouse traps in her shoes. Perfectly normal!

While we're on the theme of mice, we may mention that the little critters hie invaded Centennial Hall. These mice are really some w rriors. They scale the walls and pick up so much speed th t all you can see is a gray streak.

One mouse decided to really travel fast and "go places" so he crawled into Jackie Sitz's coat pocket. So far we've recorded two victims. ~ne was killed upstairs by Shirley and one downstairs by crew of "brave" souls. In West Hall Fern thinks a mous trap is used to stick a finger in.

From "mice" we'll ;'Shift to "men." The Seniors of Hillcrest have "male tro ble." It's rather a secret society since they meet in the at ic on third floor. Their meetings are scheduled regularly on Wednesday nights every other week to discuss their "heartaches."

An Annex girl brags about her brother's writing ability.

He wrote sixty-five letters since the beginning of the school year. Well, brothers!

Baby-sitting note from Bode-Ruth and Doris went on a baby-sitting job one night. There was a little mongrel there that let Doris pass by unharmed, but just couldn't resist taking a bite of Ruth's ankle.

We heard of a somnabulist up in Annex Hall. This certain person roamed around during the night and drifted into the wrong room and started climbing up the top bunk to find it was already taken. Did you find your way back to your room again that night, Norma?

Which girl at Waldheim studies sitting on the radiator every morning?

Why does Dorothy Schwandt always blush when the term "Let's fight" comes up? Also, why does Virginia Jahnke turn pink when "hookworm" is mentioned?

There's a Canasta Club at Centennial Hall. It was formed one semester week-end. Those sharks didn't break up their game till early morning. It was a good thing that there was no school the next day.

On my way to Bode Hall I met two ambitious persons, by the names of Jeri and Hetz, chopping the icy crust from their steps. They claimed it was a matter of life or death.

Barbara and Pauline took a fast trip down Excelsior one snowy afternoon. They had one of these speedy sleds and were just lucky enough to miss both the steps and the railing. Oops, I almost forgot, Pauline fell off halfway down and tried rolling the rest of the way.

The roof on Annex Hall really serves as a gym. There are some good baseball games up there and, when the weather permits, the roof also serves as a good wading pool.

Shirley Trapp and Carol Dauer locked themselves in their room one day. I guess it was quite by accident or perhaps an excuse for missing a day at school. One little girl at Centennial has another way to disappear. She manages to get into a locker in the girls' gym. If she ever misses a class, you'll know where to look.

Our Aeolian Chorus really has some distinguished visitors. One night all the girls were thrilled by the presence of Dr. Fritsche's red-hailed dog. He seemed to have a great interest in good music. It's too bad someone had to show him the door.

There's still much ~o say, but I guess we'll break off right here. I'd like to say "Thanks" to all the girls for giving me help in making up this column. As I went through the dorms, I sa that quite a few girls had started getting their rooms rea y for Christmas. I'd like to take this opportunity to wish all of the Co-eds a joyous Christmas season.

I overheard the other day.

First girl: Why do you suppose they've named this Centennial Hall?

Second girl: Can't s y for sure, but I'll bet it's because it's taking them a centu y to finish it. (Note: A little exageration perhaps.)

A young couple wer seated in the balcony of a magnificent movie palace w ich also presented elaborate stage productions of singers an dancers. During the stage show the young man asked an usher to direct him to a drinking fountain where he could et a drink of water. He was given complicated directions: "Go downstairs, turn to your right until you see the crims n rugs, straight ahead until you pass two trees, turn to our left, etc."

He tried to remem er the instructions, got lost, and wandered vainly around. Finally he came to a stream of fresh water, quenched his thirst, and returned to his seat.

"Shucks, I missed most 0 the show," he told his companion.

"What happened in the inale?"

"You should know," the girl informed him, "you were in it."

oc The weather has again changed here, and along with it has come a demand for more locals, so here goes.

Don Voigt has come up with a bad case of sleep-walking. He has been seen to get up in the middle of the night, wash and get dressed while sleeping. Does anyone know a good cure for that?

Naturally, along with the change in weather, we find that the boys' fancy has again turned to basketball. The fellows have been out there sweating and slaving to make a winning team, and I hope they're rewarded with a successful season.

Irwin Seifert has attempted the arrangement on one of Bach's fine pieces of music. The new arrangement is entitled "Slaughter in C Major."

The following question and answer were spoken while that notorious "class that doesn't read" was having history class: Prof: When are you ever going to start to read?

Student: When we grow too oldto teach.

This year a short course in tackle football, in preparation for later life, was given to those boys interested, and as a result there were those with stiff backs and other sore muscles. Jim Hopman wasn't quite so lucky though. He was laid up for a while with a broken leg. ' 24

Can anyone tell Harry Kuszmaul what VISIOnfish have? Harry was wondering whether fish had 20-20 vision or not. Maybe he thought he couldmake some money selling glasses to fish with defective eyesight!

Halloweenthis year meant initiation time for the First Normals. For some of the weaker ones it was quite an ordeal, but all lived to tell about it.

They call him "bone-crusher" Seidl but not many seem to know why. Only a couple of the fairer sex know the real real reason, and they won't tell.

Even a tutor can make an occasional "lapsus linguae."

One of our tutors did just that when he announced "pray practice" instead of "play practice."

The ranks of the boys have been decreased by the departure of two I Normals. Arnold Sitz left to serve his country as a Marine, and Val Jean Zoellmer left to fill a teaching vacancy.

Mid-semester week-end really took a lot out of a few fellows. They left here expecting to have a nice restful time, but instead they came back to school to rest.

Does anyone have room for a few harmless mice? Fred Biedenbender doesn't have room for any so he has declared war on them. So far only two of the enemy have been killed.

The candy store has noticed a nice increase in its business since the addition of a coke machine. Some boys have literally gone on a drinking spree.

The name Shakespeare may still be able to be spelled in the greatest number of ways, but the name "Holzhueter" runs a close second. That was found out at the recent election of cheerleaders. These are just a few ways in which Don's name was spelled: "Halseeder," "Hohesder," "Halzieder," "Hashedgers," "Paceder," "Haulheater," "Hotcider," "Palsider," and "Hoelseater."

Harold Hasbach really enjoys life. He even goes around with a sign on his back which says, "My life is Rosy."

Sadie Hawkin's Day has been here and is gone again, and along with it came many interesting discoveries. Some of the girls finally got a chance to nab their "dream boys" and some of the more bashful boys got their wish by j URt saying, "Yes." Most noteworthy, though, was the fail of the illustrious president of the II Normal bachelor club, Ronald Manthe.

Although Werner Roekle wasn't among those lucky (?) boys to be asked out Sadie Hawkin's Day, he was still there to give others a big send-off. Along with Ed Sell and his bass horn, Bill Birsching and his trombone, Herb Kluth and his cornet, and Karl Bauer and his violin, Werner with his bass horn serenaded several couples from the boys' dorm to Excelsior. It must have been beautiful!

Don't forget to write down those amusing incidents that are happening all the time and give them to the writer of this column.

Little Willie tugged at his mother's apron strings, "Mom, didn't I hear you tell Aunt Mary I have your eyes and daddy's nose?" "Yes, you did," said his mother indulgently. "Well, look at me now, rna," said Willie. "I got Grandpa's teeth."

SPORTS

Intramural-The interclass battles for the trophy have been rather quiet since the last issue of the Messenger came out. The girls are the only ones who have seen any action. They were vying for honors in the broom hockey tournament. The Junior girls managed to swing their brooms a little harder than the other teams, and ended up in first place. Secondplace honors went to the II Normals, while third and fourth went to the Seniors and III Normals, respectively. Since this was the first tournament on the girl's schedule the teams stand in that same order in the race for points toward the trophy.

The boys, too, have only taken part in one intramural tournament so far this year, that being baseball. The Seniors managed to come through and take first place, the II Normals took second, the Juniors, third, and the Sophomores ended in the fourth place bracket.

On the agenda for the coming months, there is the skating meet, and the basketball and volleyballtournaments both for the boys and girls.

On November2, the student body met to elect its cheerleaders for the basketball season of 50-51. After listening to all the candidates "yell" their stuff, the students voted for the six peoplethat will lead us in our cheering this year.

What do you say but that we all turn out for the home games and help the cheerleaders give our teams the moral support that helps so much in winning games.

Basketball: Now let's get down to the sport that's been the talk of the campus lately. Coach Oldfield called the first basketball practice on October 29. The high school 27

had quite a turnout this year. About 60 boys were there to vie for positions on the "A" and "E" squads. After watching the boys go through their paces for a few days, Coach Oldfield cut the squad down to the 21 boys who will represent the hih school in this season's battles.

Since there were only 15 boys that turned out for the college team, Coach Oldfield plans to keep them all on the team.

By the time this Messenger reaches you, both the high school and college squads will have played a few games.

You sports fans should be able to make your own predictions as to whether the teams are going to have a losing or a winning season. Let's hope it will be the latter.

OUT OF THE MOUTHS OF BABES The proverbial teacher is a stern character, someone to be avoided if possible, feared at all times, and in whose presence all laughter proves fatal. Well, the situation has certainly changed.

Today's classroom is the scene of many humorous incidents. As is so often the case, the teacher must keep a straight face 'cause it just wouldn't do for him to laugh. Well, we've tried to collect a few of these "happenings" So that you can read what some teachers had to struggle through soberly, and laugh-if you're able.

Down at kindergarten in the practice school, one of the girls was questioning about the story of Noah. "What has God placed in the sky to remind us that He will never again destroy the world with a flood ?", she asked. "A raincoat," came the reply.

In the same class, a litle boy insisted that Pharaoh's daughter named the baby boy she had found, "Roses."

They have to recite Bible passages, too. One little fellow recited, "Cast all your carrots on Him for He careth for you."

Another teacher once asked, "Where did Jesus go to pray before His betrayal?"

He received the answer, "In the garden of Gethesemane in Mount Pickle." Pickles must . have been synonymous with olives to him.

One of the professors has contributed the following from his experience in teaching grade schools. First of all, there was the pupil who persisted in talking about the Pharisee and the "Republican" in the temple. Another 29

pupil was asked to tell what he understood by "epistle."

He gave it some thought and then replied, "Isn't that the wife of an apostle?"

In a schoolat Ixonia, Wisconsin the teacher questioned, "Who was the man who sold indulgences?" Bobby answered "John Pretzel." In that same school another little boy wrote "Halloween be Thy name" when asked to write the First Petition.

The lower grades had just learned to sing "Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep." One of the little songstresses wanted to know whether they were going to sing it in church on Sunday. My, how appropriate!

The teacher was dictating the fourth grade spelling lesson when she came to the word "camel." A little boy raised his hand and proudly announced that camel spelled backwards is "l-e-m-a-c." What an influence the radio has over our children!

In connectionwith the story of the disciples of Emmaus a teacher asked, "Why was it dangerous for these men to travel to Emmaus that night?" Imagine her surprise when little Dickie, in third grade, came up with, "They might gotten hit by a car."

It was near Christmas when a little girl came up and asked, "Teacher, are we going to buy you a Christmas present this year? My Mommie told me to ask someone," she explained, "and I didn't know who else to ask so I thought I'd ask you."

Grade school isn't the only place in which humor invades the classroom. No indeed! Classes at college are often spiced with a bit of wit, too. I'll tell you one which really brought a lot of laughs. It happened in Bible History class. The professor had asked how they would explain the reason for the fact that, in the story of Peter's Draught of Fishes, the normal thing for the disciples to do would be to let down their nets near the shore. One of the girls answered that she would begin by explaining that fish bite better near shore. Could she have been dreaming or does she really think that fish must bite to be caught in a net?

While we're on the campus I'd like to relate this to you. One of our professor's little girls, aged four, was asked when her daddy would be home from the conference.

"Oh," she answered, "his shirt isn't dirty yet."

Perhaps some of you teachers have had similar things happen in your classroom. Won't you let us hear from you? We're depending on you.

CENTENNIAL HALL As the new girls' dorm is nearing completion, it may be rather interesting to look back on its development.

The need for a girls' dormitory had been realized for a number of years, and already in February of 1946 the job of arranging and drawing plans for a girls' dorm was given to Toltz, King, and Day, Inc., architects from St. Paul.

The plans being completed, contracts were let in August, 1949, and given to the Heymann Const. Co. of New DIm for general construction, Ulrich Electric Co. of New Ulm for wiring and lighting, and Northern Heating and Plumbing of Olivia, Minn., for plumbing and heating.

On Sept. 12, '49, the excavating was begun at the site of the new dorm. The cornerstone was laid on June 8, '50.

Pastor O. Naumann, president of the Minn. district and Pastor A. P. Voss of Milwaukeewere the speakers.

By Dec. 30, the foundation was completed. The first floor was started on March IS, '50. By July the cement and brick work was completed on both floors. The tower was erected and finishing touches put on the roof by July 20. The painting that was started on October 15 has been finished lately. There are still a few finishing touches to be done, such as installing fixtures, etc.

Despite the fact that the building is not finished to the last detail, there have been girls living in it since Sept. 22.

On that date 40 girls moved from a temporary sleeping quarters in the Ad Building to the west wing of the new dorm. Mrs. Keturakat also moved with them. These quarters were rather inconvenient for a while. They were kept moving from room to room by the workmen who were trying to finish the rooms. Finally, on Feb. 17 the girls of Annex moved into their completed rooms. Miss Giziewski who is the matron for the new dorm, moved with them. It was a great day for many.

It is certainly evident that the Lord has been abundant with His blessings in giving us this long-wished-fordormitory, and may His grateful people show their appreciation not only in their prayers, but by trying to keep this building in its present condition.

CHOW BELL

Since food is one of the favorite campus topics (both pro and con), let's take a little time out to concentrate on some of its "background."

First, however, the dining room etiquette deserves honorable mention. Though we could offer a few remedies, in general, we'd say it's been very good. Especially do we appreciate the cooperation we've gotten at the counter this year. Though it may seem unimportant to remove the cups from your plates at the counter, you may well realize whs' a problem it might be to remove two-hundred eighty plates and cups from one counter in a matter of seconds without causing a stampede and many looks of dissatisfaction.

Doubt it? Come to this side of the counter and try it!

Forgetting (?) to "shag" your dishes becomes a problem for the dining room girls. Suppose only five individuals should neglect to have their dishes taken to the counter.

Suppose also, that as you encounter these, you had to make five trips to the dishwasher with them . . . count your steps, record your thoughts, face each look you get from the dishwasher (and I don't blame him), and you'll consider the matter well worth a remedy.

Now for the preparation of the food. Though we try our best to please you, we don't expect the same opinion from three-hundred eighty-four tastes. Suggestions and constructive criticism are always in order. Let us stop to analyze just one problem which we must face ... leftovers. Let us assume we're serving rice. We cook twentysix pounds, run short. and can do little more but shake our heads in embarrassment to the student who p l e ads, "Haven't you anything to eat? We're starving!" To correct our error, we alter the recipe to twenty-nine pounds; but next time, for some unpredictible reason, you eat twenty-four pounds. The difference of five pounds of rice amounts to quite a volume after it's cooked. Are we expected to economizeand serve it to you again with another dish; or would you advise the easy way out . . . scrape these gallons of rice, gallons of milk, and pounds of sugar into the garbage? ? ?

We see some of you count the number of slices of bread you get from the 'counter, and a few even count your potatoes, etc. Wonderful! But that's even more than we expect. Using your sense of judgment, however, is highly recommendedfor YOUR benefit. One slice of bread left on each table totals two loaves. At your next meal count 5

the slices left, multiply by fifty tables, and convince your tablemates that dry bread tastes better anyhow! Applied to potatoes-you say you have only three left at your table. Again multiply this feeble balance by fifty for a grand total of one-hundred fifty.

Originated by students, complaints such as this spread through the local community. "Sexton's peanut butter is stale; no one can eat it." Amusing! And most of you realize, how ridiculous! Both you and we would benefit if such false accusations were eliminated. Jams get a similar "recommendation." Many of these preserves come from your homes, donated for your benefit. These are most appreciated from a financial standpoint, with you at the receiving end. For us it wouldbe much simpler to open seven gallon cans of jam (amount required to supply all the tables) than to open the same amount from containers of all sizes, shapes, and varieties, smell them, taste them and end up with you know what!

Some individuals imply that we have superfluous kitchen help and wonder what we do to keep ourselves busy.

Our full time "kitchies" average fifty-three hours of work a week. Figuring all outside help (including students), each full time worker serves an average of thirty-five people three times a day. That includes everything from planning the menu to scrubbing the floors. No work, did someone say?

Yes, this is the opinion of a mere "kitchie." It may interest you to know, however, that some of us have students up here, have eaten in these dining rooms, have worked as students, and have to date worked ourselves "down" to the position of a "kitchie." Perhaps those of you who find reason to complain might find similar benefit from a little experience at this end of it. In fact, it's the students who work with us in the kitchen and dining rooms who deserve the blue banner for their cooperation and consideration. Their "gripe," to which they're entitled, goes to the proper source, the kitchen, where it receives the necessary consideration, and, if possible, remedy. It's the encouragement from the many of you who cooperate and drop an occasional compliment that keeps us going.

Just a "kitchie," H.B. P. S. Though this was written while I was yet a college employee, my interest in D.M.L.C. has not changed, and I'm sure I'm speaking for the remaining members of 6

the kitchen force. Favorable comments will be accepted by any of its members. Others may be "cooled" by dropping them in an envelope addressed to 218 N. Broadway, from where I'll try to deliver them to the proper source.

THE REAR-VIEW

MIRROR

In our first glance through the rear-view mirror we see the D.M.L.C.baseball team of 1912. These players had a successful season, for they won all of the three games reported by the Messenger of June, 1912.

It may be of some interest to find out what these men have done and what has becomeof them. With this thought in mind the Messenger Staff has prepared a brief summary to inform our readers of their present status.

Wm. Fuhlbrigge continued his studies and is now a pastor at Egg Harbor, Wisconsin.

Leonard Kolander is now farming near Lakefield, Minnesota.

R. Janke went on and became a pastor, and after serving several congregations came to D.M.L.C.as a professor.

He was with the team as an umpire, for when the picture was taken teams supplied their own umpire.

Roy Vollmers also completed his studies for the ministry and is now pastor at Englewood, Colorado.

Wm. Lindloff is pastor in Elkton, South Dakota.

Fr. Meyer, deceased.

Ew. Kuester, after teaching for a number of years, entered busines and is now associated with Brown and Bigelow of St. Paul, Minnesota.

EDITORIAL

WHAT DOES EASTER MEAN TO YOU? Now that we are again in the Lenten season, we look forward to Easter. Easter is that time of the year when everything again changes. We have gone through a long winter, and now everything seems to come to life again, preparing us for the bright days of summer. It is a beginning of the joyful season of spring. For everyone Easter has a different meaning.

Let us look at the meaning which worldly people place upon Easter. This is a good season for the merchants to make many sales. Everyone is out shopping for a new set of clothes to show off on Easter Sunday. In the great metropolis of New York, there will be thousands of people walking around Times Square in the annual Easter parade.

Their main thought of Easter is on the fashionable clothes they will be wearing. Don't we often put too much emphasis on a new set of clothes for Easter?

At this time of year, many peopletalk about the Easter Rabbit and Easter Eggs, especially to the children. Many emphasize this custom too much, and very few know about the symbolism in each of these customs. The egg has always been a symbol of a new birth, and, in that sense, a symbol of the Resurrection. When an egg is dyed red, it represents the blood of Christ shed on the cross. The Norsemen also dyed eggs in many different colors to represent the bright sun of Easter morning. The Easter rabbit originated among the Norsemen in honor of the divinity of spring, called "Eastre." Often these customs are turned

into money-making schemes and observed with too much importance.

Maybe to us who are students, the first thing that comes to our minds is the idea of our week's vacation. This certainly means much to many of us who have opportunities to go home only once or twice during the school year. This. however, should not be our main thought at Easter.

A.p, Christians, we commemorate Easter as the day on which our Lord rose from the dead. It is one of the main festivals of our church year, around which we center our services. The great consolation that is ours should overshadow all the other thoughts of Easter. Christ was triumphant over our enemy, the devil, and made his work of redemption valid for us. We have the assurance that we will one day rise from the dead to eternal life, even as He did. Jesus said in John 11:25, "I am the Resurrection and the Life: he that believeth in Me, though he were dead yet shall he live: and whosoever liveth and believeth in Me shall never die." There is nothing in the world that can have a greater meaning for us than these words as we again approach Easter.

Dorothy Knoll DO WE NEED ART? To most of us here at Dr. Martin Luther College,music has become an integral part of our daily lives. Some of the students really enjoy their work in music, and as a result they do not feel that their curriculum over-stresses music.

On the other hand, there are those who are not at all musically inclined, and it is likely that these people consider all such studies irksome.

Between these two extreme viewpoints, there is the opinion held by a few of us that while music is enjoyable, and necessary to a certain degree, our courses could be arranged so that there would be a balance between the art of music and that other essential art, that is, art in the form of sketching and painting.

Classes in both, or either of these, would be invaluable to a teacher. Surely the teacher makes as much use of his drawing ability as he does of his musical talents. Oftentimes, he is thus able to help his pupils to visualize the problem at hand, not to mention the obvious benefit to the teacher in presenting art as a subject. In our college department, however, we are offered only one semester of art, whereas we have much more music. As an example, '10

in Freshman College,our curriculum requires the study of harmony, singing, organ or piano, and, of course, participation in a choir. Certainly these subjects will be useful in teaching, and, to a certain extent, they are essential, but logically, shouldn't our course of study include a balanced amount of hours in the instruction of both arts?

Not only in the College Department would such a course be appreciated, but those students in High School who are not preparing for teaching and have no interest in music could find an outlet for their creative instincts by means of the pencil or paint brush.

We do not express this opinion merely as criticism, but, because we are preparing to do the Lord's work, we want to do His work well by making the best use of all our abilities.

A CASE FOR THE COURTS First of all, I shall set down a premise to which you must all agree; otherwise this article is in vain. That premise is a very simple one: namely, that the tennis courts are a constituent part of the athletic and recreational facilities just as the organs and pianos are constituent parts of the music curriculum.

Recently an incident took place that partly influenced the writing of this article. There is a tennis court situated in the rear of the boys' dormitory. Why anyone should want to turn around on that tennis court with 3 truck is more than any sane man can understand. I would like to term this "willful" destruction of college property.

Oh! You say that no one plays tennis anyway, and that it would not make much difference. As to the first po' there are many people that would be willing enough to play this sport, providing there were better facilities. Who wants to play on such courts as we have now?

Comingback to the premise set down, how many of the former music students wanted to practice on the old organs that once filled the music hall? Since the recent trend in replacing the old "clunks," isn't it true that there has been a higher percentage in willingness to learn the art of organ playing?

There wasn't much said about the truck driving on the tennis courts, but I venture to say that there would be fur flying if some similar act were performed on the sanctioned Music Hall. Such things would not and should not be allowed. But in the case of the tennis courts it was allowed and permitted.

Do you think that such acts that mutilate college property add to the prestige of the college? I have often heard this remark made, "Well, look at the weed patch behind the boys' dorm!" Think of what these will say this spring when the ruts of a heavy truck, that had chains on the wheels, will be seen by these people who are so free with their remarks.

Coming back to the courts, those schools that have courts, have good ones. At Watertown they have tar or asphalt courts; at Saginaw clay courts, although there have been plans already made to build cement ones.

The students are entirely in favor of increased and improved recreational facilities. This can be seen by the fact that so many turned out for football practice.

I have stated my case for the courts, I think, and I have one question left. Is there going to be a continued lack of interest in the tennis courts?

EDITOR'S NOTES Some may wonder what has happened to the humor column,no, it has not been forgotten. Rhoda K., the writer of the humor column, was called to fill a teaching vacancy at Gibbon; she claims to have been so busy that she had no time to write a humor column, however, she did give enough of her time to send in a number of jokes. By the next issue she will have returned to D.M.L.C. and the humor column will again be in the Messenger.

The Messenger Staff hopes that the subscribers are interested in this issue's picture produced from an old cut.

Those who enjoyed it may look forward to see more in the forthcoming issues.

them for use in preparing and editing the Messenger. Already the floor has been sealed and waxed, and the windows have been washed by some "ambitious" staff members. In the near future the walls are to be repaired and painted.

We hope the new environment will add to the improvement of the Messenger.

THE SERENADE OF THE BELLS Every student at D.M.L.C.has undoubtedly wished at one time or another that the bells would never ring again.

But what would this institution be like without them? Although most of us probably do not realize this, it has been stated that the bell is one of our best friends. Let us investigate this idea.

Gently breaking our slumber with a piercing scream, our friend faithfully comes to us at six-thirty every weekday morning. It is joined in this pleasant task by tho tower bell, gently swaying Annex to and fro; the eerie downtown whistle; and co-operative alarm clocks in all the dormitories. A few of the braver students arise ready to face the day, while the majority cover their heads and turn over for just forty winks more. The five-minute bell brings this dream to an abrupt close, and the second group tumble out of their beds. The laziest students cower in their beds, acting as though they were enjoying the extra minutes of repose, but actually they are subconsciously awaiting the going-over bell. The frenzied rush following its ringing usually results in almost half of the places at the breakfast table being occupiedat the time of the prayerbell. Having failed in their attempt to beat the bell, the late-comers try to sneak in unnoticed.

A ringing bell brings varied emotions to different students. When the chapel-bell sounds, a feeling of terror is experienced by anyone with her hair up in pincurls or anyone with his shirt and tie still draped over the chair. A bell announcing the end of a badly-needed organ or piano practice before a lesson results in a student's despair. This same sound might mean relief to some unprepared student 14

about to play cadences in the harmony class.

Because most of us can sleep later than six-thirty on Sunday mornings, that certain bell brings a fiendish satisfaction to many students. However, a source of wonder is ever present in the length of this Sunday morning scream. Perhaps the reason is that we must all be wide awake to appreciate the fact that it is Sunday morning once again.

To guard against the possibility of anyone's going to sleep before the usual time, we have bells ringing at set intervals throughout the evening, the last one being at nine forty-five. After this, we may retire, finding comfort in the thought that there will be no more bells until morning.

Regardless of the number of complaints raised against the bell, all of us have sensed a feeling of unrest when we return to school from a vacation and find that the bells have not yet been connected. Don't you think it sounds rather friendly when we hear the first irregular rings?

From morning until evening, everyone on the campus has his own private race to beat the bell. We wonder, when we are away from D.M.L.C., will we say with the poet, "I think upon that happy time ... when last we heard the sweet bells chime?"

THE LITTLE FLEA Once upon a time there lived in the Land of Dogflia, a tiny little flea named Kermit. Now Kermit was no ordinary flea, for most fleas walk on six legs, but little Ke+mit walked on two at a time, so that he always had two fresh pairs of legs to use when the ones he was walking on became tired. So already one may see how Kermit became world-renowned because of his amazing ability to bother other creatures with untiring zealousness.

Kermit lived a very lively life while living with his mother and father, but soon he knew all the territory of Dogflia and so set out to find new adventures.

After wandering for a time, he joined a flea circus which was touring on a French poodle. Here with the fle: circus, little Kermit discovered that he had other abilities.

He provided great entertainment for enormous crowds by riding not one bicycle on the high wire, but, because of his six legs, by riding three bicycles. But soon his admiring 15

populace dwindled, for he rode these bicycles so fast that he was invisible. Of course, another factor contributing to his advancing unpopularity was that his act was s( breath-taking that many in the audience died from lack of air. One thing his act did do was to inspire one of his admirers to invent a bicycle built for three, so that Kermit could ride in comfort.

He continued his occupation but soon ran short of money, because he had to buy three pairs of shoes at a time for his six feet, and we know how expensive shoes are. This prompted him to take up additional jobs.

He now became a brave lion trainer. His procedure of lion training had many puzzled, but it was quite simple to Kermit. He would merely run around one lion so fast that the lion would twist his own head off by followin him around with his eyes. The other lions, fearing the same fate, then readily obeyed him.

Then one day calamity came to poor Kermit and the flea circus. The French poodle suddenly became annoyed by his occupants and desired to rid himself of the fleas forever. So first the poodle poured alcohol over his entire body, and then rolled in a sandpile. This may seem like a rather futile attempt to rid oneself of fleas, but it was really quite simple. The fleas became intoxicated from the alcohol and killed each other by throwing rocks. So ended the eventful life of the strange flea, Kermit.

For the benefit of all fleas, they should adhere to the following moral: "Your children may prosper on cats and hogs, But never let them go to the dogs."

GEL? Gel? What in the world does that mean? Is it something to eat? A question such as this can come only from an outsider. A native of New Ulm or anyone who has lived in "the City Beautiful" for any time will know it.

The word is part of a unique language that is composed of the best parts of English and German, with a bit of Scandinavian thrown in for good measure. This Scandinavian is found in such small quantities that it is :not too noticeable.

The German, however, is divided into different dialects. High German, Low German, and Bohemian, all these find their places in the tongue known as "New Ulm Deutsch."

We cannot, however, claim sole ownership to this delightful language. Wherever there is a region settled by German immigrants we find Platt Deutsch. Among the great men in literature who used it was Mark Twain, who talked to a group of American Students in Berlin on the Fourth of July, using a mixture of English and German.

When close inspection is made we find that it is hard to determine just where "Gel" originates. It could be the product of "Americanizing" German or "Germanizing" American. This process often brings new words and expressions into use: for example, "Haggie Boulder" and "Oben upstairs."

Deeper investigation. reveals that "Gel" has no definite meaning except that it is used as an extra affirmative often followed by a negative. This can possibly be explained by the use of examples. A typical New Ulmer may say, "Du gehst mit, gel no?" or "Gel, das ist der truth," or many other such variations.

To one not familiar with this system of communication the dialect of the New Ulmers can be confusing. But if you become befuddled, don't despair, for sometimes even the veterans concoct words and phrases that even their fellow'linguists cannot translate. It's quite confusing, Gel?

SOCIAL INTERCOURSE Many things may be included under this heading, such as meetings of ladies aid, tea parties, and other numerous non-essential gatherings. Since this space is to be devoted to material of the utmost importance, such intercourse as having been mentioned previously will not be delved into.

At this time, we want to discuss the most important intercourse of all. I am sure you will agree with the writer's point of view after you have heard the name. An expression by which we more commonlyknow this type of intercourse is "the bull-session." Some people may say, "That is nothing but dumme Spraeh," Such people have entirely the wrong conception of such a matter. As you read on you will realize why people who say such things are entirely wrong.

It is indeed to our regret that the ladies cannot participate in these "sessions." They fail to profit by the many intellectual discussions of which members of the stronger (male) sex partake.

Maybe this compensates for the statement, "The girls always study more." Since they are not able to benefit by these "sessions," they have to study to make up for this great loss.

I think it would be no more than fair to give the fairer sex an idea of how these sessions are carried on. (Don't worry, fellows, I won't tell everything).

These periods of discourse are not scheduled in a systematic way. Some may say, "There!

You have a point against you already; you have no system." Ah, but that is where they are incorrect. There actually is no specific reason why these meetings should be held systematically. I am sure you will agree whole-heartedly after you proceed in reading. As someone sees the need for a discussion, he merely begins a gathering. This is done "after a fashion;" therefore you can see why it is not so essential that there is a system.

You may be passing the time away by reading the two volumes of Paine's Life of Mark Twain, or some other short, trivial work. A fellow-member of the "session" class may enter your chamber. The first thing which must now be done is to deposit your other trivial work. The discourse now begins; the word soon spreads; before much time elapses the entire class is present. Then, "there she blows."

Usually each member speaks as he sees fit; this sounds as if it may be rather confusing, but if you set the gray matter working, you can keep the line of thought without too much difficulty. "Aber wann they bringen in Deutsch das ist die ende, das ist zu much zu try und denken about."

When something of this nature happens, many lose their lines of thought; that surely makes it bad. But here is a good example of what is learned at these "sessions."

Many of us nowadays have not had an opportunity to learn Deutsch; these "sessions" have permitted us to produce the most elegant Deutsch possible. In fact, many of us are troubled; we think the army may draft us as interpreters.

There are so many topics discussed that it would be impossible to mention all of them at this time. To generalize the discussion I would say this: You might hear about topographical conditions, especially from North Dakota and Nebraska in the West, to Michigan in the East, and if one of the members has traveled a great deal, he might ex18

pound on all the places which he has visited. This is nothing; wait until you hear the different experiences of the different members. Just imagine, the membership ranges from ministers' sons to farmers' sons. Keeping this in mind, you can imagine the conditions that prevail. Whew.

Then of course there has to be the piker. He starts telling about what he has read. I must admit, once in a while it is interesting, but it is often that this is the point where the sessions break-up. Everyone slowly goes home, invariably satisfied; there is never a complaint. The assignments are never too difficult; the teachers are never too severe. Doesn't that make a perfect class? Some may describe it as Utopia.

I sincerely hope no envy is aroused by this article. I realize everyone would enjoy having the opportunity to take part in such intellectual discussions, but you can see for yourself that this is impossible. At this time then I wish to extend my sympathy to those who are unable to participate in the "bull-session."

Although Christmas vacation was enjoyed by us all, we willingly returned to school,rested and eager to resume our schoolwork on Thursday, January 4.

Music lovers of D.M.L.C. with tickets for the Community Concerts were privileged to hear talented Gyorgy Sandor's piano music on Monday, January 29, in the New DIm High School Auditorium.

The week of January twenty-second brought with it the semester holiday, January 27 to 28, some going home as soon as their examination schedule permitted.

The members of the Luther Literary League, thoroughly enjoyed themselves at their Valentine Party on Monday, February 12. After the regular meeting, everyone participated in the Virginia Reel. Later, valentines were exchanged among the L.L.L. members. The evening was climaxed by refreshments of pop and heart-shaped cookies.

Before we leave for our Easter vacation, the first choir will present a concert of two Bach Cantatas.

With spring drawing near, we look forward to a joyous, blessed Easter for all.

Eunice Sitz became the wife of Gerald Bunkowski '49, on July 16, '50, at Hutchinson, Minn.

Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Hille became the parents of a baby girl, Suzan Marie, on Dec. 6, 1950. Mrs. Ralph Hille, nee Marie Meyer, graduated in '46. The Hilles live in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

With the words "Merry Christmas" and "Happy New Year" still ringing in our ears, we Co-eds started out the new year of 1951. First of all we painfully had to finish up the first semester and then eagerly start on the seccond one. Now it's almost Easter. It seems only a short time since Christmas, but we know that a lot can happen in a short time.

With all the snow around we can see quite a few snowmen guarding the girls' dorm. Notice any resemblances?

The Third Normal girls put a new slant on the cold wave.

They said, "We're so cold we're just like peanut brittle."

Pruet popped up, "At least peanut brittle gets hard in the oven." Softies?

Why did Lois Reudiger throw peanuts at Mary Ander son and Thelma Storm one quiet Sunday afternoon? Mary was only playing and Thelma was singing. Don't you appreciate music, Lois?

Jean Eichstaedt woke up to the amazing fact in her Chemistry class that carbon monoxide is a good reducing agent. Have you tried it already, Jean?

On Semester week-end Hillcrest girls had a gay time playing Canasta, eating lots of popcorn, and drinking cof. fee till --A. M. At 1:00 A. M. the doorbell rang and all the girls disappeared. Was it dusty under Mrs. B.'s bed?

If teaching makes a person absent-minded we can see proof in Dorothy Mueller. She walked into her closet instead of out the door while she was on her way to classes one day. Shirley Wiemer was afflicted with the same disease.

She couldn't distinguish between Shasta and Noxzema.

At West Hall the girls practice the saying, "Variety is the spice of life," but why does a certain Senior girl enjoy eating at one certain table over every week-end.

Ginny Spaude just goes "bugs" when she sees bugs.

Her roommates scared her out by putting them in her bed, and as one of her roommates put it, "She just had fits."

On Valentine's Day Sandra Papenfuss received a box of candy and lost a bet. Wonder whether she won more or lost more!

Waldheim's matron got too noisy one night while the girls were studying (?) so they just put her in a place to cool off-the tub.

Joyce Pautz owes all the Second Normals a treat for coming late to class, Hope you haven't forgotten, Joyce.

Betty Egvedt was running down the open stairway at Waldheim in her clown pajamas only to find that there was company below. She hit an all-time speed on the way up the stairs.

Room 5 at Hillcrest always gets requests over KTOE for the Nincompoop Song. Why? How come there are so many requests on KTOE for three fellows from Great Lakes? Ask Jan, Muriel, or Barb.

Rhoda Lau was opening a can of tomato soup one evening and it exploded when her thumb slipped in. She was covered with soup, and tomato soup at that! Maybe she was rehearsing a bloody murder mystery.

We always hear these little moron jokes, but here is one that really happened. Lois Glaeser took her clock to bed and put it under her pillow so that she could hear her heart beat.

Once more those words of the immortal bard, "Spring is sprung, the grass is riz. I wonder where the birdies is," announce the new season when a young man's fancy turns to thoughts of-baseball (?). As usual at this time, however, yours truly has been out digging up some of the incidents that happened during the hibernating time. Here are just a few!

With the coming of warmer weather, students should have an easier time with their studies. According to one illustrious professor, the cold weather we had caused the freezing of a lot of gray matter which in turn caused widespread forgetfulness. This theory of brain matter freezing may not be a proved fact, but it might make a good excuse sometime. (Better add alcohol early next winter.)

..

Now that the semester reports have been handed out, most of the students are breathing a little easier. However, before they learned their fate, a few were thinking of packing..and the song, "So Long, It's Been Goodto Know You," was in great popularity.

The mystery of the year: How did Les Ring's book, General Course of Study, get back to him? It seems Les had taken it with him when the basketball team took a trip recently. Along the way the bus stopped, and Les got out to lay in a supply of food for the return trip. When the bus had started again, Les suddenly remembered that he had left his book in the bakery, or so he thought. A few days passed when one day the book was handed to him with no explanation as to how it got there. It's still a mystery to Les, but maybe Detective Lueders can solve it. Not so, Willie?

"In for Hulke! In for Hulke!" was the wild exclamation of the player as he reported to the scorer. "Who are you?" asked the scorer. The player felt rather stupid when he replied, "I'm Hulke." It seems Leroy was so excited at the prospect of entering the game that he made a slight lapsus linguae. It was soon corrected, however, and Leroy got into the game.

The score was 48-47 in favor of Luther as the gameending whistle blew, but Coach Oldfield looked the part of dejection. It was his belief, until someoneenlightened him that his team had lost. His excuse for that blunder was. poor eyesight.

Lyle Lindloff says he's had enough of flash cameras.

He claims there's a time and place for everything, out apparently it was neither the time nor the place for some camera fiend to snap his picture, was it, Lindy?

Guess who? To some this little poem may portray someone; others can take it as creative art.

The concert was over and the audience was slowly leaving the auditorium when this remark was uttered by Prof. Hoenecke, "The part I liked best was the intermission."

Karl Bauer and Richard Sonnenberg believe in having all the latest comforts. They now possess a communication system between their rooms. No more climbing stairs for them. I wonder what they'll think of next.

The candy store must be a regular gold mine. Gary Voigt has gotten so rich from it that he counts his money in his sleep.

Harold Hasbach has added another treasure to his lifelong possessions. This one promises to make his life "Rosy."

How large is a bean? The following clear as mud description was given by Fritz Janke: It's about the size of a navy bean, only smaller.

Werner Roekle has come across a new food which belongs strictly to his diet. As a result, when he said, "Please, pass the sermon," no one seemed to know what he wanted.

I wonder what it tastes like.

According to Karl Bauer, a uniform of handwriting is very foolish. His reason for saying that is that if all wrote the same way, you couldn't tell their writing apart.

His way of reasoning wasn't very well received however.

Les Ring must be accustomed to being awakened by an alarm clock. It certainly looked that way when, the bell ending the period having rung, he suddenly reached to turn off the alarm that wasn't there.

I wouldn't have blamed you if you'd stopped before you got far, but now that you're here, you'll be glad to know this is the end. So long!

SPORTS

Basketball-By the time this Messenger reaches you. another basketball season will have gone by the boards. At the time of writing, there were still four games left to be played-two College and two High School games. However, here are the statistics up to that poin: The High School "A" team had so far enjoyed another winning season by racking up a total of nine wins against five losses, and had meshed the nets for 651 points while holding their opponents to 546. Marv Meihack led the scorers with 171 points, while Frank Kolander wasn't far behind with 149.

The "B" team also had managed to stay ahead by turning in a record of four victories and three defeats. The scoring honors here went to "Bob" Hartwig with 57 points, while L. Plath and Pelzl were next in line with 42 and 41 27

You may say that this is really nothing to brag about, but considering that last year's team managed to eke out only four victories, you'll have to admit that things are beginning to look brighter. Then, too, since this year's team will be losing only one of the "first ten" through graduation and may gain a few more from the High School squad, I think it would be safe to say that next year our team could really go places in conference play. But to get back to the present, the "Maroon & Gray" came through the season, excluding the last two games with a grand total of 851 points, while their worthy opponents gathered 871. Don Hartwig led the scorers with 256 points, while "Bill" Lueders scored 191 and "Toot" Kock 170. In the S.M.J.C. Conference standings, our team was in fourth place with four wins and five losses, and in conference play had been outscored by the narrow margin of 527 to 528 points.

Up to February twenty-third, the girls had taken part in three tournaments while the boo only "had it out" in two.

Both the boys and girls took part in the skating meet which was held on February seventh. Because of the cold weather, most of the time was spent in the warming house, but, nevertheless, the races went according to schedule. "When all was said and done," and the points were totaled, they showed that for the boys, the II Normals were in the lead, the Seniors were in second place, while the I Normals took third and the III Normals fourth. For the girls, the Seniors took first place honors, while the Juniors, II Normals, and Sophomores placed second, third, and fourth, respectively.

The only other tournament that took place was girls' volleyball. After they had played their games and results were tallied, it showed that the Senior girls again placed first, while the III Normals were in second place, the Sophomores placed third and the II Normals fourth.

THE TREE BRANCHES AND LEAVES Once again we view that lovely tree which we planted as a class. As we watch it grow, we see in it our class.

Some branches have grown quite a little; some, not so much.

Some branches have been cut off, those who 'have gone out teaching; some branches have been grafted on.

As we look at the tree, we see the tree dividing into two sections. The one section is large and strong and has many branches: this represents the girls in our class. The other section, the branches few in number and weak-looking, represents the men of the class. Besides tihe branches of the tree, as other trees, we also have the nuts and the saps running through.

But let us view these branches a bit more closely, and, in our mind's eye, watch them grow for a period of approximately five years.

Take that one branch there. We know her as Margaret Gamm. We see her taking her pupils on a field trip to the Kalamazoos and 'Statter viewing the other animals, as her pupils do, all she does is admire the Otters.

That one branch there, that long one, which extends away into the sun, as found in Africa, is Dorothy. She is still teaching and because she is so Willing, she has become quite a Lueder.

There's another long branch, heading in the Western direction. That's our Lil. She has given up the teaching profession (i.e., has come in from the field) and is now living on the Old Nag Ranch together with her husband, Wild Bill Autrey.

There's also one in Wyoming. This is no one but Doris, who has accepted the smoke signal from there as "Kapellmeister," and there is busily "engaged."

One of the branches has grown eastward-Watchke, who has grown accustomed to being away from New VIm. She has set up an "arranged" library table, especially for those from town, so they needn't go begging for books.

Another extends into the baseball field, of all places, where we hear that today 'a game was played between the Dirty Sox and Miller's Argyle Sox. Miller's won by two purls. The ref. turned out to be quite a heel. Refreshments sold: Pape corn and ice cold Pape.

There's another branch which has, instead of initials, 7

some historical dates carved in. This is none other than our man Seidl, who has given up trying to get dates by his do-re-misystem and now has begun using a different method called "Up and after 'em."

Another branch there, almost as long as the African one, is a Roeck, to be sure. She is guess conductor in Thuringia. There she is directing her own composition, "Not only Butterflies, but Birds Chasing the Butterflies."

The 'Songis very tweet.

There's one which is really "way out." That's Zassie.

She was so often heard saying, "Let's get down to business now," that many of her pupils have entered business. She's started quite a boomingcity "way out there in S. D." Take that branch over there. That one is Radtke, B.B.M.M. (Bachelor become married man) who is still teaching diligently with some Lausy help.

That one branch, that is hanging so low to the ground, is Jerry. He has become a full man (as reading makes one). He has just finished reading his second complete works of Dumas-only 1198 left!

Another branch, one with a clean, scrubbed, smooth and sanded look, is Willie. He is busy cleaning floors and is really getting to the top despite his Lucy intervals.

On that stronger section of the tree, we also see the branch, Jo. She is teaching, and, to interest her pupils, she has set up quite a menagerie in her school, including a mouse called Gus-Gus. She is a good teacher, nothing daunts her; no one Harms her.

That piece of paper on the trunk is something taken from the "Arizona Harold": A graduate of D.M.L.C.was lately seen riding Hosback to his tent. He was heard teaching his singing class his own composition: "0 for a Rosy Life in Arizona."

Another branch there is Marion, who has given up acting because she's tired of playing the Wolff in "Little Red Riding Hood" and is now a seamstress, the old "So and Sew." One is Greening, who has just received the third degree for the writing of the hook "Polymorphonuclear Rosettes."

He has set up the Jerk's Laboratory, keeping his students worthily engaged by feeding them Hershey bars.

Also there is the Scherzer branch. He has just won first prize for his painting "Cattrack" concerningwhich one 8

critic said, "Very betty, very betty!"

Another branch, Prueter, has become a very prudent organ instructor, majoring in numbers by Pachel'bel, Pape is a branch that is every busy writing arguments.

Just lately one appeared in "Nature Magazine," proving that it was more wortlhwhileto chase Millers than moths.

That one branch, just popping out of the side of the tree, is Rhoda A. She is busily telling her pupils how high beans grow in N. D. The first poem she ever taught them was a masterpiece of her own: Rhoda from North Dakota Another branch is Ottie who has opened a Gammble store. As a sideline, he is swimming instructor at the third of the ten thousand lakes. Lest they harm themselves, he has taught them the five formal steps of artificial perspiration.

That branch there, that fuzzy-looking one, is Werner.

She is still good at sports, especially basketball. She is teaching her pupils how to weave, so they can make baskets.

She is teaching them good sportsmanship by occasionally making a basket for the other side.

Kelly is that branch. She has become quite renowned as a scientist, since her recent dissertation on the various hearts, viz., human heart, animal heart, and Eber heart.

That branch is Ruthie. She's majoring in penmanship.

She still maintains that the o's should be made in this direction and not that. Her pupils look rather worn out, probably from too much "rolling around."

Another branch is Baldie, who has grown quite accustomed to teaching in a city with more than one tree and is busy, as ever, making the sodhouse famous.

Ebie is that branch. He has becomea wonderful teacher, except for one oddity. Anything that he wants colored green, can't be just any green; it must be Kelly green.

That last branch there, extending east-ward, is Landvatter, who is a beautician, has well learned his arithmetic and uses many short cuts. He bears the sign: "To payor not toupee that is the question."

So we have seen what has become of our class tree.

The entire tree has been transplanted "into the field." Yet the roots of the tree, as will our thoughts and remembrances, remain firmly grounded here in dear D.M.L.C. Ruth Werner Rhoda Lau

HISTORY OF THE SENIOR CLASS OF '51 The date: September 9,1947. The scene: Room 204 in the Administration Building. The occasion: Sixty-three greener than grass "Fuchses" w ere huddled together for protection against the wintry blast of I ear n i n g and culture we were about to encounter. The great era of high school had begun, and most of us were more than a little awed by all the very superior upperclassmen who seemed to know their way around. In a few weeks, however, we too "caught on", and we wondered how anyone could be as green as we apparently had been.

The class began the year with sixty-three members; sixty-one were still with us in June.

As our life at D.M.L.C.began to unfold for us, we encountered many "firsts." We had our first class picnic that fall. A few outstanding memories we have of that are the ceaseless playing of the "Wolf Polka" on the juke box and the ruining of state property for the worthy cause of roasting wieners. We experienced our first concerts that year. We were quite impressed, especially by the Christmas and June Night concerts; we longed for tlhe day when we could be up there, singing along. Our first piano recital had us all scared stiff as we stumbled through the "Happy Farmer" and "Country Gardens." Another of the "firsts" was our introduction to Arbor Day. Graduation morning was the beautiful close to an exciting year. We watched the graduates receive their diplomas and told each other that we would never get a sheepskin, but, with our mind's eye, we were seeing ourselves up there.

And then we were Sophomores! Fifty-three of us were back again and sixteen new students joined us to make the sophomores sixty-nine strong.

Those first days were glorious! No longer would we be called "Fuchses." Now it was our turn, and we made the most of it. We laughed loud and long at the antics of the Freshmen, who got lost looking for classrooms, who were sent on errands for striped ink, used stationery, and left-handed monkey wrenches. It was our first year in the choir; finally our dream of singing in concert came true.

We will always remember the cat which came to geometry class and couldn't behave. That year came to an end too, and we went home to start looking forward to the next.

It was September again, and we were the Juniors.

Sixty-two of us had returned and were joined by eleven others to make it a class of seventy-three. We greeted all 10

the old classmates and tried to make the new ones feel welcome. We attempted to be nonchalant about being Juniors, but we were proud that we had made it so far; we had plans to make it a wonderful year. The boys had their chance to get into the limelight by joining Marluts. There were some events and memories to be thought over; one was the day we decidednot to go to English class. The girls will never forget how long they slaved to get the team's basketball uniforms ready for them to play the consolation game. They were rewarded for their efforts by seeing the "Bees" win. The girls refused to take the back seat though, so they won the girls' intramural sports trophy. Easter vacation was a happy event that year. It was our chance to show everyone our shining new class rings. We were another step closer to being Seniors. That June we went home for the third time after a year at D.M.L.C. Late that summer, we were all shocked and saddened.

The news reached us that Philip Lenz,of the Marines, who had been our classmate the first two years, had been killed in action in Korea.

Suddenly it was the big day. September 12, and we were Seniors. So this was how it felt to be the people we had respected so in our Freshman year. We decided we were a little more grownup, but otherwise very much the same "Fuchses," at heart. Sixty-three of us had returned and found that we were being joined by five new students.

"The more, the merrier" was our motto.

That was the most eventful year of all; something seemed to be happening all the time. The girls from Annex finally moved to Centennial Hall. It was a long wait, but worth it. In fall, the girls joined Aeolian to add another bit to the college's concerts. Some of us joined the Luther Literary League and took part in plays and skits. At Christmas, Willy Rogers left to join the Air Force. It seemed strange not to have him with us anymore, with his easygoing humor and always-busy brush and pen. Later in the year, there were calling cards and friendship pictures to be exchanged. In March came the long awaited basketball championship games. We were one of the competing classes, and we had the time of our lives preparing for it.

We worked hard for days, planning and putting up the decorations. We got up at 4 A. M. on a cold and windy morning to put up the posters. The team worked hard the nizht of the game. The score, at the finish, was against us, but all our work had seemed to knit our class even more closely together. No one will ever forget our chemistry J J

classes and lab periods; all the disagreeable mixtures and odors that were concoctedwith the help of our very patient professor. Then there were the boys in the back row who insisted on opening and closing all the windows at the wrong times; and there were our singing classes which becarne so famous for gum chewing.

Now, our senior year is almost over, and Graduation Day is coming closer. After we leave, some of these memories will grow fainter as time goes by. But there are some which we will never forget-can never forget, because we have lived them.

FESTINA LENTE THE CLASS OF 1926 Twenty-five years are not very long when you look back. That is the consensus of opinion of the graduating class of the normal department of 1926.

This group had a slogan distinct from any other class ~past, present, and (most likely) future. Unique it was in that it was not chosen by the class itself, but rather received from the venerable president of the institution of those days, Professor Bliefernicht. It was not given in English, which all of us understood; not in New Ulmer Deutsch, which some of us could sling; but in Latin, which some of us had studied but could not apply to the distinctive slogan, FESTINA LENTE. Stubby, the name by which we knew our dear professor, interpreted it as "Take your time," or "Eile mit Weile" in German, which transposed into vernacular New Ulm German for some of us was to say, "Imma langsam v'ran!"

Yes, twenty-five years is a short time for the class of 1926, for during that period the class letter traveled its round only once during the first ten years and has not as yet finished its second course during the remaining fifteen years. At this rate we can not expect a full representation of the class at the reunion on June 5th, for twenty-five years are too short a time for a class called "Festina Lente," Of the class of sixteen members, five are still teaching in the Lutheran schools: Edgar Backer (Abu), Saginaw, Michigan; George Denninger (Tetzel), Cudahy, Wisconsin; Martin Hoffman (Matz), Dale, Wisconsin; Theodore Lau (Ted), Hortonville, Wisconsin; Armin Rauschke (Ammie), Mankato, Minnesota.

Gerhard Mueller is a pastor in the Missouri Synod at Tenstrike, Minnesota. John Meyer (Hans) and Angelica Glaeser (Geli) are working in the Northwestern Publishing House, Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Guenther Waidelich (Shadow) is in big business with the Standard Flax-Meal Company of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Herbert Hauch (Chink) is with the Firestone Company of Benton Harbor, Michigan.

Last, but most important, come the ones of whom is said "they rule the world": Alma Hafner, Yelm, Washington; Leona Price (Caprice), married to Sophus Stensrud, Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Emma Roeder, wife of Pastor Herbert Hackbarth, Dexter, Michigan; Hilda Zahn of Sur14

ing, Wisconsin,and Loretta Zorn of Cleveland,Ohio, whose addresses and present names are not known to us at the present time. These are the girls of our class who have Iolned the ranks of help-meets for their respective husbands.

On the more serious side, the class of 1926 also had a fitting motto, which proved a comfort and an inspiration to its members in many trying times. It was and still is "My grace is sufficient for thee." II Cor. 12:9.

We, the class of 1926, have no great accomplishment to show, no great personage to parade, but we can boast of Christ's assurance that His grace was, and always will be, sufficient for us.

Editorials THE MESSENGER A PAPER Should the present Messenger be changed into newspaper form? This question has been asked many times within the past few weeks. Many people have given their opinionof such a change. Some are for it, some are against it, and some do not care.

If we look into different facts and figures, it may help you decide what you prefer.

Let us first glance at the present Messenger. Nearly every person who says anything about the Messenger says, "The articles are too stale; it should come out more often." It seems that the students want more timely articles; they do not care for literary articles. Students show this dislike by the way they buy SUbscriptions. Out of 410 students here at D.M.L.C.,only 232 have bought a SUbscriptionto the Messenger. Something must be wrong.

Surely, more subscriptions should be sold than the number given.

When a paper form of the Messenger is mentioned, there is much more enthusiasm. The Staff has taken a count of those who prefer the paper form. From between 390 and 395 students, 379 voted for the paper form. The out-of-town subscribers also show their preference to the paper form.

A person can readily see why a paper would be much more interesting. In the first place, it does not take as long to print it. It only takes from five to ten days, whereas it takes three weeks to have the present Messenger printed.

The paper would probably be printed eight times a year, or in other words, about once a month, whereas the present Messenger is printed four times a year. The two facts added together would surely make the Messenger a more up-to-date publication, It would then be possible to put in more pictures. They could he timely action shots of athletics and 'Ofother activities on the campus.

There are those who like the literary work connected with the present Messenger. Those peopledo have an argument, but they are by far in the minority. I think what the majority wants should be done.

also. Let us look at that figure, 232, again. Only 232 students buy the Messenger. That surely is not saying much for our schoolpaper. That gives us only $232 to work with from the students; that amount does not go far in times such as they are. There are, of course, outside subscribers; but there are only 88 of those, so that doesn't go very far, either. I am sure, if we would print a paper form, more students, and maybe even more alumni, would subscribe.

This would give us more to work with; then we would not have to ruin our fingernails scraping the bottom of the barrel.

If a paper were started, this indifferent attitude towards the Messenger might change. Then the student body would enjoy reading it, and it would be much more enjoyable for the Staff to publish a schoolpaper.

DOES THIS MEAN YOU? Our Dr. Martin Luther College is an institution, the chief aim of which is to train Lutheran pastors and teachers in teaching the children of the Lutheran faith. It is a Christian institution dedicated to God and His work. The general trend of our school indicates the fact that some of us have forgotten this.

We have a Commandmentin our Catechism which says, "We should fear and love God that we do not despise our parents or superiors, nor provoke them to anger, but honor, serve, and obey them and hold them in love and esteem."

In our school, this commandment is very important and should take a dominant place in the student body's attitude.

We seem to be, not so gradually, slipping away from this attitude. For .example, many of us have a very high opinionof ourselves. We show the professors that we think we know it all. True, we should have the democratic spirit in our classrooms; but aren't we often letting it go much too far? Let us not become disrespectful and insolent.

Please, each of us, try the shoe on your own foot. Many of us will find it fits perfectly. After all, God gave us some gray matter, and He expects us to look deeper into a few things, not just brush the surface. Remember, we're going to teach some day. All those questionable words and actions we consider so minor, that we direct at our superiors now, are going to hit us right in our faces when we're on that 17

side of the desk. And remember, these professors really have a few more years and a little more experience behind them than we. Perhaps they are right once in awhile. We will look back on our D.M.L.C.years some day and realize how foolish and ignorant we were when we thought we were so intelligent. Let's think it over and see if we can apply it.

STUDENT CONTRIBUTION

Why don't more of the students take an interest in the Messenger? It is our paper. Not only those students who are on the staff but the entire student body should feel that way about it! Many of the students 'are willing to purchase and read it, but when it doesn't appeal to them, they complain. It seems that no one is really interested enough to do anything about it. When the time for an issue of the Messenger draws near, and we look around for essays, stories, or poems, there just 'aren't any. Why? Surely in a student body of over 400 there must be some who could write well if he would only try.

Of course, there are a few students who make a contribution now and then, and to these few we are thankful. but the contributions rarely exceed one or two per issue, rather a low percentage-2 out of 400. Is it because the students can't or won't write? In most cases it seems to be won't.

"What is the Messenger staff for?" you may ask. The staff members usually have a column to write, a business end to handle, or some other job that must be done before each issue can be published. Moreover,the Messenger is a publication put out by the student body of D.M.L.C.,not only by the staff. If you read the title page of the Messenger you will read, "The D.M.L.C.Messenger is published four times ... by the students of Dr. Martin Luther College." This statement has been in the Messenger since its origin. So why don't the students show more interest?

Why don't they take a little time out and help support their publication by writing something for it?

In the future when you read the Messenger and find something that you don't like, instead of going to your friends and complaining about it, take a little time and see if you can't write something better. Maybe that way we can really make the Messenger a publication of and by the entire student body.

Literary THOUGHTSON A GRADUATIONDAY The class of 'fifty-one has gone, Long left these well-known halls.

BALLAD OF THE SHORT CANDLE 'Twas on a dark and stormy night A tragedy occurred.

"To read, or not to read tonight."

She thoughtfully demurred.

In favor of the book she chose.

"I'll sleep another night."

The candle's lit, the coke's nearby, Eyes, with excitement bright.

The book was of a fearsome ghost, Tales of his deeds so dire.

At every noise and creak of floor Her temp'rapture rose higher.

The hours flew by, the tale ran on.

The chocolates? They were gone.

The cokes had all been drunk, but one, In racing with the dawn.

Her roommate slept the sleep of babes, But she her eyes ne'er closed.

She would read on, and on, and on, Till the book the end disclosed. " ... The ghost pursued, the hero whirled, Drew back, began to shout ... " The horror of all horrors beThe candle light went out!

She shivered and she shook with fright; Straight up rose every hair.

What was that stealthy, ghostly tread She heard upon the stair?

A false alarm, 'twas but the wind.

THERE'S NOTHING LIKE IT Although traces of dirty snow were still visible in shadowy corners, and the air was damp, 'and although the skies were gray and the wind still raw, an undefinable something stirred in each of us. Formerly well-behavedclasses grew unaccountably boisterous. Matter-of fact young men and women became lost in reveries 'and often in each other.

Boys worked on the baseball diamond as soon as the field had dried. It was evident to us all that Spring was just around the corner.

In spite of these time-proven symptoms, the arrival of Spring herself caught us unawares and made us breathless at the beauty she spread over the formerly dingy surroundings. Her filmy green mantle touched the brown lawns, leaving them tinged with misty green. Her gentle fingers drew brilliant green spears from the dark, damp earth; her coaxing voice called back the singing birds and awoke the cheerful wood creatures. She brought with her a bright new sun and set him in the clean swept skies to light their soft blue. Her constant companion, the rollicking, but soothing West wind, played through the branches of the newly-clothed trees.

All with young hearts answered her call, and released from our winter's dull confinement, we came out into the sunlight and warm breezes. We beheld in astonished wonder the new color replacing the accustomed drabness.

We rejoiced and were thankful. We went into the country, meandered through the hills, and followed the winding river.

Now our pale faces are glowing, our eyes sparkling, and our voices gayer. God has brought His earth to life again, and we, His children, have become more alive with the co:mingof Spring.

SOMETHINGTO TAKE ALONG Do you remember your first day at D.M.L.C.? As you turned into the campus, you viewed the grounds that would be your temporary 'home for maybe four or seven years.

Perhaps you compared it with the school and home you had left, wondering how you would be 'accepted here.

At first the unaccustomed buildings and people possibly gave you a strange feeling. This feeling began to diminish, however, when you found yourself among others of your own age.

Remember that first morning in chapel? What a wonderful feeling you experienced when the whole student body and faculty joined in the hymn and prayer. All hearts were united to praise one Lord. Already that feeling or .strangeness found less room within you.

Your first classes-you couldn't help smiling at some of the names which sounded peculiar to you then. As the days went by you made your friends. In your "bull sessions" or "gab fests" you found that some experiences fellow-students had shared were similar to your own and some were altogether strange.

June brings graduation. You think ahead to the time when you will be leaving D.M.L.C. Is there any of that strange feeling left? No, you have been bound with "the tie that binds." When you leave D.M.L.C.there are many things that have to be left behind, but that feeling of oneness we can take along.

R. A. H. MOM About the sweetest three-letter word I know is "Mom." This word implies to me affection, understanding, comfort 23

and encouragement, among many other wonderful qualities.

As students attending school some distance from home, we can really learn to appreciate that loving person whom we call Mom. How anxiously each of us looks forward to that pa-ckagefrom home, or that laundry case with those sweet morsels of Mom's good baking tucked neatly in one corner. Often it is meant as a surprise, but it is usually expected, because Mom never forgets that appetite which is always ready to devour anything edible.

From the time each of us was a child, we can remember how Mom was always ready to do everything for us.

How often we would go to Mom and ask for advice and receive only the best of it. Those complicated problems which have confronted us from our younger days were always answered with understanding, although occasionally we could not readily grasp the meaning of her seemingly philosophical words. Also, at times, We received the consequences of some misdemeanor which seemed cruel and harsh then, but we would finally realize how fortunate we were to have Mom present to suppress some of our mischievous endeavors.

Even now, when we journey homeward, we look forward to all that awaits us, made possible by Mom. After a strenuous period of laboring over our books and studies, it is so wonderful to come home and rest, with all of Mom's cooking and housekeeping readily at hand.

Yes, Mom is a wonderful word with all that it implies, and, too often, we take for granted the sacrifices she makes for us. We should 'all be thankful to Mom and realize how much she appreciates a hearty "Thanks, Mom." When speaking these words, we should imply all the love we have in our hearts.

WEATHER?

As all of you know, the weather has been the favorite subject of man from the beginning of time. Well, I have a few things to say about the weather also, although it isn't my favorite subject. How can it be? Half the time it can't even be classed as weather.

I would like to tell you of some of my experiences with the weather which clearly show how it has gone to extremes in both directions during these last few years.

As I recall, a few years ago, it was so hot and dry during the summer that the fish left a cloud of dust behin d them as they swam up the river. This indeed was a rare incident, and I doubt whether or not I will ever see anything like it again. And, then, to be different, last summer the weather backfired and we had to wear sheepskin coats practically all summer. It is getting so bad that one has to carry a sheepskin under one arm and a fan under the other in order to be prepared for any change in the weather.

Old Man Winter also has pulled his share of boners this year. As I was going home for a vacation, the train on which I was riding was delayed for a few hours. When I inquired as to what the trouble was, the conductor told me that it was so cold outside that the smoke froze as it rolled out of the engine and fell on the tracks. This stopped the train until workmen could get the tracks cleared. After the train was again on its way, I happened to look out of the windowand noticed a farmer digging out the snow around the top of his windmill so that the wind could get at it. I felt a little sorry for him. If he didn't get his windmill dug out, he wouldn't have any water all winter.

I didn't think the snow would ever go away, but since summer is just around the corner, the snow is bound to leave sometime.

Many snow-boundexperiences were related by the students after a snowy Easter vacation. Everything from horses and sleds to buses and trains was used to make it possible for everyone to be back up on the hill to resume studies on Tuesday, March 27.

On March 8, one of the most interesting and best-liked Community Concerts was given in the New Ulm High School Auditorium. This was The Columbus Boychoir, an eleven-year-old organization under the direction of Herbert Huffman. The Boychoir held the interest of the audience with the many beautiful numbers, including the comic opera "Bastien and Bastienne" by Wolfgang Mozart, "The Echo"

by Orlando di Lasso which was unique, and Lowell Riley's arrangement of a "Medleyof American Show Tunes," recognized and enjoyed by the entire audience.

Those of us with Community Concert tickets were also privileged to hear the St. Louis Sinfonietta on April 2. This small concert orchestra was brought to us by Paul Schreiber, the founder and conductor. The program for the evening featured harpist Jeanne Fintz in the beautiful "Introduction and Allegro" by Maurice Ravel. Two additional pieces were Mozart's "Overture to the Magic Flute" and the "Emperor Waltz" by Johann Strauss.

Tuesday evening, April 3, an interesting film was shown in the college auditorium. This film, "Africa Still Calls," was taken by the Pastors Wacker and Edgar Hoenecke from Michigan.

Various musical organizations of D.M.L.C. presented a concert on Sunday afternoon, April 15. The Aeolian 26

Chorus sang three numbers; one was the Sateran arrangement of "We Praise Thee, 0 God." Reuter's "Mach dich auf, werde Licht" was the outstanding piece by the Marlut Singers. Among the numbers of the Second Small Choir was the Bach motet, "My Soul, Now Bless Thy Maker."

The Second Choir presented, among other numbers, "The Heavens Are Telling," the impressive selection from "The Creation" by Haydn. The concert was brought to a close with the band presentation of "First Suite in E Flat" by Holst.

Transportation was supplied for students who wished to attend the concert of the Bethany CollegeChoir at Mankato on April 22. This concert of sacred music was under the direction of Alfred Fremder.

Afternoon classes were excused to permit the students to see the movie, 'Hamlet," on April 24. Almost the entire student body went to see the excellent acting in the presentation of the never-to-be-forgotten Shakespearean play.

After the usual false alarms, Arbor Day finally came on Friday, May 4. Special class groups were assigned various tasks of cleaning up the campus. Hard work produced hearty appetites and the soft drinks and sandwiches prepared by the Third Normal Class soon disappeared at the forenoon lunch.

A bus-load of students went to Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Sunday evening, May 6. A three-act opera "The Bartered Bride" given by the college students in English. It was presented in the Myrum Memorial Field House.

Marvin Busse, a student of the First Normal Class of D.M.L.C.,gave a piano recital in the college auditorium on May 8. The program consisted of nine selections by the pianist and two numbers by the Aeolian Chorus. The piano numbers included Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata" and Brahm's "Lullaby, Op, 49, No.4" arranged by Grainger.

Marvin began his last group of piano music with the gay "Butterfly Waltz" by Seitz. He also played the very modern "Polka, Op. 22" from "L'Age D'Or" by Shostakovitch. The recital closed with the dramatic "Hungarian Rhapsodie, No. 14" by Liszt.

A band concert, assisted by the Aeolian Chorus and the Marlut Singers, was held Sunday afternoon, May 20.

This date was also chosen for the annual Open House held on the campus.

before Graduation Day, was held June 4 in the college auditorium. Many secular songs were sung by the entire chorus of more than three hundred fifty students. A pianoorgan number was presented by Dorothy Drost and Harold Hosbach. Doris Pankow played a piano solo. The First Choir sang a portion of Bach's gaster Cantata. An outstanding number of the evening was "Bless This House" presented by the combined mass choir and band.

Baseball Because of bad weather conditions our teams did not have any outdoor practice until shortly before the first game. At the time of writing the season is well under way, and both the High School and College teams seem to be none the worse for the late start. Coach Oldfield has D. Stindt and F. Janke on the mound for the College team, while B. Otterstatter is behind the plate. R. Kramer, P. Kock, W. Lueders, and R. Eberhardt make up the infield, while D.. Hartwig, F. Schwecke, and G. Voigt hold down the outfield positions. For the High School team, N. Stellick, O. Guth, and M. Meihack will do the pitching, W. 29

Voight the catching, L. Plath, F'. Kolander, H. Wessel, and P. Zimmermann will do the infield duties, while the outfielders are F. Panning and the relief pitchers.

The College opened the season by meeting Bethel on our home diamond. Luther really came through, trouncing their opponents 19-0. Stindt did the pitching for the first 5 innings and Janke took over for the remaining 2 innings.

The biggest thrill came in the 4th inning when Stindt hit a homerun with the bases loaded. This time they overpowered Bethany by a 15-4 score.

Stindt again did the hurling, striking out 11 men and walking 3. The next game was a non-conference contest, pitting the College team against Gustavus "B" on our diamond.

The Hilltoppers came out on the short end of a 6-10 score.

The High Schoolteam went into action on May 3, meeting Truman on our diamond. Our team outscored their opponents 8-2 in the 7 inning game. Stellick and Guth were on the mound for Luther, between them striking out 18 men and walking only 2. The Prep team proved that they could hit too, getting 10 hits, including a double and 2 triples, the latter by Voigt and Panning.

son, losing to Northwestern Bible Schools5-8. Stindt again went the distance on the mound, striking out 10 men, but being tagged for 10 hits. The last game played up to the time of writing pitted Luther High Schoolagainst Bethany High. Our team came through with a very decisive victory, running up a 23-2 score. W. Zuleger went the distance on the mound for Luther, allowing only 4 hits. He was also a power at the plate, slamming out 3 singles and a homerun. Turning again to the inter-class tournaments of the year, we find that the boys are still having trouble deciding who is to "cop" first place honors and the trophy, while the girls have the question all settled.

In the boys' tournament there is again a deadlock between the II Normals and the Seniors. The Seniors managed to forge ahead by nabbing the first place 10 points in volleyball, but the II Normal "Cobs" came back to their own by defeating all opponents in the basketball battles, thereby tying the score at 34 points each. At the time of writing, a softball tournament is well under way which should break the tie and award the trophy to one of the above mentioned classes.

In the feminine part of the tourney, the Seniors seem to have first place cinched by virtue of their 35 points.

The nearest contender, the Juniors, have only 20 points, and as time will not permit more than one more tournament this school year, it is safe to say that the senior girls are victors in their part of this year's intramural program.

West Hall has a characteristic example of Spring in Margie. Day-dreaming in class one day, she suddenly burst out laughing, and was asked by her prof. what it was all about. Could be that it was about the same thing she saw at the Audubon show-Moose!

At Bode Hall, things were in a sad condition the day Ellie fell in the drinking fountain.

Spring marked the start of baseball again, and at Centennial there's very much enthusiasm for it. Kathy Hinderer was one of the first ones to swing the ole' bat, with the usual result-Hillemanns' room had air conditioning for awhile.

The porch at Waldheim is an ideal place to sleep on these warm spring nights, so the girls there say. Pauline isn't used to the cold night air yet, because she doesn't last too long sleeping outside.

Clean-up Day came to Hillcrest one Wednesday, and the girls were busy scrubbing and washing windows all afternoon. The results were admirable, and everyone agreed that the lunch, after all the work was done, was a good reward.

Barbara Braaz had a rope hanging out her window one day.-(for escape?) Her excuse was that it needed an airing before it could be used in the Literary play.

Carol Kielgas is always singing "I'm just wild about Harry." We wonder why? Betty Egveth must have sung "Give MeOneDozenRoses," because she got the result--one dozen roses.

When Loretta Manthe has a birthday that calls for something unusual. A surprise party at 5:30 a. m.! It really turned out as a surprise to her! Joyce Pautz celebrated so hard on her birthday that she had to stay in bed the next day. What was it that you had, Joyce?

Does anyone in your room snore? If so, someone has found a solution. When "Rainy" snores, "Cookie" whistles.

It works like a charm because it keeps "Rainy" quiet the rest of the night.

Did you ever run into the wrong classroom? "Vangie" just yells "Hey!" whenever she does, and heads for the door. She could have seen Viola Loeck's teddy bear that came to class one day and thought she didn't belong there.

Several new clubs have appeared on the campus again.

One is the III Normal "So and So Sewing Club" meeting in Centennial's Tower Room. Sophomoresat Hillcrest have formed the Y-A-P Club, meeting on Friday nights. Dues .are a nickel a week. Must be the "You Are to Pay" club.

Mice again! Birky saw one one night and made a flying leap to her top bunk. She got there too! Teddy came to "Kelly's" rescue one night when one of those "critters" was bothering her. She picked the mouse up from behind the curtain on the window-silland carried it to its death by drowning.

Several famous sayings have originated in connection with the Co-eds. One Prof. stated in class one day: "See if you can keep those coyotes quiet, Wolff."

One Co-ed was trying to recall the lecture in a class several days ago and said: "I wonder if he was talking out of the book, or if he was talking out of his head."

Patron: "What's on the menu?"

Waiter: "I have frogs legs, chicken liver, pig's feet, and ... " Patron: "Never mind your deformities, you to eat 1" 35

Oncemore we are coming to the end of the school year, and, as I made my round of the rooms, I heard that old familiar phrase, "I don't know of anything" which shows they haven't learned anything again this year. I did get a little news though; therefore I put up my "Quiet! Genius at work" sign and I tried to meet the deadline.

With the coming of spring, everyone began to notice how badly our campus needed a cleaning. Hence Arbor Day was again proclaimed, and the campus was given a new face. Only a few were unable to enjoy the day off, and those were the members of the baseball team. They had to settle for a nice long trip in that "limousine" known as the collegebus.

Leroy Greening must have been low on money--or why did he send his graduation announcements out so early?

Strictly corn !-Howard Wessel (nicknamed "Wheeze") should really be named Heloise, because it's pronounced "Hello-Wheeze." (l almost laughed when I heard it.)

Latest observation! Virgil Raasch and Doris Pankow have the same shaped noses.

Marvin Busse really had a problem after his piano recital. When people swarmed around him for his autograph. he didn't know whether to sign as a true artist, so they couldn't read it, or whether to sign legibly. (Knowing his handwriting as I do, I don't think he had much choice.)

The sixty-four dollar question-why were the third normal boys standing around Doris Pankow when a cold dish was served for dinner?

For some strange reason Wally Voigt thinks his name means "brave hero." (Wouldsomeoneplease tell me why?)

Arbor Day always seems to be a good day to knock holes in the ranks of the bachelors, and this year was no exception. Among those stricken, smitten and afflicted was Richard Sonnenberg.

"What's he throwing?" asked the professor, referring to whether the pitcher was throwing a curve, drop, etc.

The reply of "baseballs" from Gary Voigt was therefore rather amusing.

Robert Landvatter was so sure of the place where he'll be teaching next year, that when he was writing out a list of the third normals and their home addresses, he put his own address as Fairfax, Minnesota.

Rueben Kramer certainly is "one of the rovin' kind."

The other week-endhe even went rovin' as far as La Crosse, where, I'm told, he had quite an enjoyable time. Since then, however, coach's one request is that Rube should stay here at collegeduring the baseball season.

What's Irv Seifert been doing? I bet you've been wondering. Well, I always thought Irv was the quiet kind, but I was proved wrong when he had a little run-in with Ron Feurstenau.

At a recent meeting, the senior class was trying to decide what to give Prof. Trapp, their class advisor. They all got a good laugh when someone suggested a joke book (with no "corn" in it).

Les Ring really got the big head when he heard what one little boy called him. Les was just stepping out of the bus when the little boy hollered, "Hi, George (Mikan)."

It wasn't "Be kind to animals" week, but Huetel and Lenz still had a soft spot for one little cat. They brought it right into the dorm and gave it a nice soft bed to sleep on.

Ah, those baseball trips to the cities. They're only good for one thing. Just ask Ardie Wentzel.

Bill Winterstein is another one of those who likes his Wheaties in bed. He says he'd rather have them in a bowl instead of all over his bed tho'. Remember that, Paul?

Five dollars for just growing a mustache! It sounded like easy money so Carmichael accepted the offer, and now he is busy growing one.

"My poor hat," was all Prof. Backer said as he saw his crushed hat. It seems that while he was with the choir at Mankato, Prof. Backer left his hat in the exact place where some little girl wanted to sit down.

The length of his sleeping has been shortened a little, though, since the morning he missed two periods due to sleeping through.

For a while the other night, Tutor Albrecht had a few boys wondering where he learned to multiply. Tutor kept insisting that ten times three is thirty-three. Luckily the majority still rules, and they soon showed him that he was wrong.
