MJM News & Views Welcome to our rebranded magazine Connect. Connect is our new internal brand which will drive continous improvements in our internal communications and engagement across the business and the group. You will see much more of over the months ahead.

CEO MESSAGE

While there hasn’t been a large number of projects to report on over the summer months, it has still been exceptionally busy in planning and preparing for the last quarter of 2019 and in closing off projects completed in the first half of the year.

We have just finished the Oceania Regatta, Disney Wonder and the Noordam and currently have teams on the Voyager of the Seas and the Oasis of the Sea and are about to start Quantum of the Seas.

The Oasis of the Seas is another mammoth project for MJM Marine in which we will fitout approximately 40 spaces throughout the ship. The template for this project was set out during the Norwegian Joy project which we completed in April. The Joy was our biggest ever project and as I said previously it challenged every area of our business. However, as a team, we have taken key learnings and best practices and implemented them on the Oasis. We have also engaged with RCCL and Porsche Consulting to drive efficiencies across our projects and have implemented a lean workshop system on two areas onboard the Oasis on a trail basis. We are looking forward to the feedback from this to assess where improvements can be made on future projects.

Speaking of Norwegian Joy, I was delighted to read that the Joy has been rated as Number 1 for guest experience across the entire NCL fleet. I like to think that the MJM Marine team can take some of the credit for this given the exceptional job we carried out on this ship. Well done to all involved!

In other areas of the business, I am delighted to report that the ERP Project is well underway. The ERP kick-off meeting took place on 3rd July and since then the team is working tirelessly to deliver systems and processes which will significantly improve our business. ERP represents a significant investment for our business and a major turning point to enable MJM Marine to position for the future. The project success depends on the active involvement of all departments and I would ask that you give the ERP team your full support.

Full credit to the Social Charter Committee who have put together an excellent Employee Discount Scheme for MJM Marine. They have worked hard to secure the support of over 20 local businesses who have offered exceptional discounts across a range of retailers and service providers across the Greater Newry area. The scheme has been praised by a number of local businesses particularly as it encourages employees to shop local.

From a Health, Safety and Welfare perspective, we want to position ourselves as an industry leader by setting the highest standards for Health & Safety, promoting safer systems of work, creating a zero accidents mentality and thereby driving improvements across the industry.

Gavin McKevitt To do so, we aim to instil a positive Health & Safety culture across the company which is built on Director in Charge proactive leadership and positive behaviours and supported by robust systems and controls. Our Health & Safety team has been working hard over recent months to provide additional training but SHEQ we cannot do it alone. We need all employees across the offices, factory and on site to embrace a positive Health & Safety culture by being vigilant, adhering to all health & safety instructions and guidelines and acting in a safe manner in all aspects of our day to day operations.

By working together and taking collective responsibility, MJM Marine will be the industry leader in the area of Health, Safety and Welfare.

Project Focus - Celebrity Equinox While all of our projects present challenges in different ways, it could be argued that Celebrity Equinox was one of the most challenging. Damage to a drydock in Grand Bahamas in April had major implications on the programme for the Equinox. What was originally a 36 day drydock in Freeport to fitout 27 venues became a 10 day drydock in Cadiz with additional works carried out on the transatlantic crossings to and from Spain. To further compound the issues, twentytwo containers had already been shipped to Miami and Freeport which resulted in containers being recalled and materials reordered. Once again, MJM Marine’s Can-Do attitude came to the fore and all departments from Design to Contracts, from Purchasing to Logistics, from Production to Business Support all pulled together to deliver an excellent project to a very satisfied client. Celebrity Equinox is the first of a three-ship deal with Royal Caribbean which also includes Celebrity Silhouette and Celebrity Eclipse.

The Retreat Lounge onboard Celebrity Equinox was designed by Kelly Hoppen who some of you may remember as one of the dragon’s in Dragon’s Den.

The Cabanas on Deck 15 sit on top of real grass and cost $249 to hire it for the day.

Project Focus - Oceania Regatta In November 2018 MJM Marine began work on Oceania Insignia. This was a new client for us and was the first of a fourship deal. Since then we have completed three ships— the Insignia, the Sirena in May 2019 and have recently completed the Regatta. The fourth and final ship in this deal, the Oceania Nautica is scheduled to be completed in 2020.

Anyone familiar with Azamara Pursuit might recognise similarities between it and the Oceania fleet.

Azamara Club Cruises current fleet of Azamara Pursuit, Azamara Journey and Azamara Quest are all sister ships of the four Oceania ships, having being built by Renaissance Cruises in 1990’s. When Renaissance Cruises ceased trading in 2001, the fleet was sold off and is now in the hands of Azamara Club Cruises and Oceania Cruises.

THINGS THEY SAY In every issue of this magazine, we give a flavour of some of the positive feedback we get from customers, suppliers or stakeholders. But sometimes the “things they say” are bigger than emails. Sometimes they come in the form of Awards which recognise the outstanding team we have in MJM Marine. In June we won two fantastic awards of which we are immensely proud.

The Irish News Workplace and Employment Award (WEA) named MJM Marine as their Team the Year 2019. This incredible accolade was awarded to us because the judges believed that “MJM Marine operates by the simple principle that good people make great businesses. Despite its workload varying in scale, size and complexity, the company has nurtured a team spirit over the years which makes it like a growing family. Employee engagement and talent management are deeply engrained in the culture of the business – which also makes a positive difference to society and people’s lives through its actions and resources.”

TEAM OF THE YEAR!

BEST PLACE TO WORK! Hot on the heels of winning the Irish News WEA Award, we went to the Greater Newry Business Awards and picked up the Best Place to Work accolade.

The Best Place to Work award focuses on the commitment of an employer towards employee wellbeing and satisfaction and on training, skill development and career progression.

Another well deserved award for a fantastic team echoed by Damien Morgan who said: “Well done to the whole MJM Marine team!

Fully deserved, as the saying goes, Teamwork makes the dream work!!“

EXPORTING GIANT Our business prowess on the international stage was also recognised when we were presented with an Board of International Trade Award (BOFTA) for Exporting Success by Dr Liam Fox, the former Minister for International Trade. The BOFTAs celebrate businesses who are championing free trade through exporting, bringing investment into the UK or demonstrating an innovative approach to entering international markets. On presenting the award to Chairman Brian McConville, Dr Fox said: “I was delighted to present MJM Marine with BOFTAs last week. They are contributing to a stronger economy not just for Northern Ireland, but for the UK as a whole.”

ALL FOR CHARITY The Social Charter Committee has had a busy and active few months raising money for our Charity of the Year—the Starburst Sensory Project at Rathore School. This year, we took a slightly different approach by engaging with our supply chain to organise the inaugural MJM Marine Charity Golf Day. We had a phenomenal response from our suppliers who supported the event through sponsorship, donations and playing on the day. Indeed, many of them want us to do it all again next year! Thanks to the Social Charter Committee for organising this event and special mention to the team in Purchasing who used their powers of persuasion to attract so many suppliers!

To tie in with our Health & Wellbeing initiatives to look after our physical and mental health, we took time out on 30th August for the MJM Marine Spinathon. We had over 50 employees who took part and kept 5 bikes spinning for 7 hours in the Buttercrane. Fantastic effort by everyone involved with over £800 raised.

And they’re off! Pearse Leonard, Jackson Touhey, Stefan McParland, Keith Walsh & Pauric Daly got the Spinathon off to a great start!

Massive shout out to Damien Eccleston & Stephen Murphy who both completed the Lap of the Lough in August. For Damien, it was his first attempt completing the 144 km in under 6 hours!

Stephen is a veteran cyclists who has done the Lap of the Lough 4 times & completed it this year in 4hrs 58 mins.

The guys raised almost £1000 for our charity!

WHAT’S NEW? There is always plenty happening in MJM Marine so we’ve rounded up a few of the bigger things which have taken place over the last few months.

Eagle eyed readers of the employee newsletter will have spotted its new name. This is part of a new initiative which has been launched to create a more formalised and structured approach to internal communication within the company. As the company grows, we want to ensure that all employees are fully engaged in the company’s activities and have the mechanisms to communicate back to management. We have created a new brand, ‘Connect’, for all our internal communications and are launching a number of initiatives to give employees to opportunity to tell us what you think and for management to communicate to employees. The first of these will be the roll out of an annual Employee Engagement Survey in conjunction with Investors in People which you will receive on 21st Oct. This is an opportunity for you to have your say and allow management to set a benchmark for the company upon which feedback will be given and improvements can be made. We are also introducing a Suggestion Box which will be rolled out in due course.

Employee Discount Scheme After months of hard work, the Social Charter Committee were delighted to launch our Employee Discount Scheme. The purpose of this scheme is two-fold, firstly to give our employees exclusive discounts with a range of retailers across the Greater Newry area and secondly to support the local business community by encouraging you to shop local. Since we launched the scheme, we are delighted that other retailers and businesses have approached us to offer additional offers. The Social Charter Committee is formalising these offers and will announce them in due course. In the meantime, we would encourage you to avail of discounts on offer.

AROUND THE GROUP As a new addition to the Newsletter we are doing a quick round up of news across the other MJM Group businesses.

MJM Group has taken over the Milestone which has since been rebranded as ‘The Kitchen’. We would like to welcome the seven employees from the café to the MJM Group team. Updates on special offers etc. will be available in the near future.

Most of you will have seen the works going on in new carpark across the river from Phase II. This is due to be completed shortly and should be available for the MJM team before the end of the year.

Back in August, the property team raised a phenomenal £10,000 for a local community fund in Ballykelly by hosting an Engine Show at the former Shackleton Barracks site in Ballykelly. The site has been owned by the McConville family since 2016 and there are a number of exciting proposals in place for ongoing usage of the site. It has been shortlisted down to the last 18 in the UK as a potential Logistics Hub to support Heathrow Airport Expansion and is also in the process of applying for outline planning permission for a Data Centre; and there currently is a manufacturing team working in Ballykelly supporting projects in MJM Marine and Mivan.

Come into The Kitchen!

Interaction between Mivan and MJM Marine has strengthen with a number of marine projects including the Freedom of the Seas, which they are currently working on. This is on top of a very busy land based schedule in central London including 20 Grosvenor Square- which is a Four Seasons managed luxury residences development; 48 Carey Street prime residential which will continue into early 2020; 2 Dovehouse Street, a high quality Later Living development consisting of 56 luxury apartments and leisure facilities. They are also working on Shard Place – Level Four Amenities- This project is next door to the Shard and is the third building in the Renzo Piano’s designed ‘Shard Quarter’.

MIVAN

Congratulations to the Topglass team who have recently completed a number of glazing projects including the new Jaguar Land Rover Car Showroom in Dungannon and has been going from strength to strength with one of its key products- Profilit. So far this year Topglass has been commissioned for works totalling a six-figure sum through sales of this key product line with notable projects in Dundalk, Kilkenny, Colchester, Paignton, London and the Netherlands.

HEALTH & WELLBEING Our Health & Wellbeing Committee organise events and highlight key issues to encourage us to focus on our own our physical and mental health. There are so many different ways to look after ourselves, whether it’s through strenuous (or some might say crazy) activities like Gavin McKevitt’s Ironman Challenge, or walking as much as possible in work, or running after work. Even a relaxing and less physically demanding hobby like reading or baking or knitting will help us relax, clear the head and recharge the batteries. Baking is obviously a big hobby throughout the company judging by the response to our recent Bake-Off competition both in Newry and Poland. It is hard to say which office has the best bakers!

Ironman Gavin McKevitt. After 112 mile cycle and a full 26.2 mile marathon , the beer is well deserved!

Counting Steps! Hannah Onderko who keeps Phase II looking ship shape clocks up an average 20,000 steps per day.

Gabriel McPolin reckons he manages 25,000 steps while Chris Haughey seems to have beaten the record with an eye watering 32, 865 steps recorded in one day.

HEALTH & SAFETY ROUND-UP Just a quick note to thank all those that assisted with the 9001 and 45001 External audits with NQA in July / August. We are happy to report that there were no major non-conformities identified over the 3 days and we have successfully migrated from BS OHSAS 18001:2007 Occupational Health and Safety Management System to the new BS ISO 45001:2018 Occupational Health and Safety Management System at the first attempt. External audits for 45001/9001 will be now be on an annual basis, with the next audit in July 2020.

Training The Construction Industry Training Board will have their mobile training unit on site at MJM on 27th and 28th November.

The CITB mobile training unit will provide a series of training workshops for office and workshop staff over the two days to include abrasive wheels, ladder safety, confined space, COSHH, HAV’s and accident / incident reporting.

Health & Wellbeing The Health and Wellbeing Committee have arranged for the NI Blood Mobile to visit MJM in November. This is a great cause and all donations of blood will go to making such a difference in the provision of medical treatment for many and possibly saving a life!!

Thanks to all employees who have kindly expressed interest in taking part so far and let’s hope for a fabulous turn out on the day.
