Take Control of Your Health Care
By making better decisions about your medical care, you can reduce your health care costs. Here are some ways you can control your care:

1| Choose a doctor who fits your needs.
To initially narrow down options, assess your health care needs to understand what kind of doctor (e.g., family practice physician, general practitioner or internal medicine physician) will be the best fit.
Your insurance company can help you locate in-network providers near you who will fit your criteria. Many insurance companies will also provide ratings and reviews to help you make a more informed decision.
2| Be honest with your doctor.
When you meet with your doctor, it’s important to give them all your medical information, so you can receive appropriate care.
Make a list of concerns to discuss with your doctor. If your doctor doesn’t know about a problem, they can’t help you.
When you are confused or unsure, ask your doctor questions.
3| Don’t try to handle everything alone.
If hospitalized, bring a friend or relative with you to help you understand medical information and assist in making medical decisions.
Share your situation and concerns with others. It’s easier to handle difficult situations when you have a support system.
4| Seek a second opinion.
If any of the following applies to you, you may want to get a second opinion:
You have a serious medical condition.
Your doctor prescribes a treatment that comes with significant risks.
Your doctor recommends surgery for treatment.
You have no improvement in a treated medical condition.
You visited a doctor who could not diagnose your problem.
Remember, you are in control of your health and can advocate for yourself. If you don’t already have a PCP you trust, start by contacting your insurance company to find one and schedule a preventive exam today.
