Stephan Jolk é um artista em rápido crescimento, na vanguarda do movimento techno melódico.

Suas faixas dramáticas e DJ sets se desdobram como paisagens sonoras envolventes com tons delicados e sintetizadores perfeitamente sequenciados, trazendo luz e, acima de tudo, uma alta carga emocional. Ele provou isso em um espaço de tempo muito curto com quatro lançamentos vitais pela Afterlife, de Tale Of Us, em apenas um ano, e uma série de sets ao vivo nos mais diversos cenários, o último bem no centro da icônica Praça Duomo em Milão.

O artista anda focado no trabalho em estúdio, com uma abordagem analógica que mistura texturas únicas e sons profundos, que ajudam a criar ambientes densons e introspectivos. Neste artigo, conversamos com o artista sobre

como ele vem despontando na cena, como passou o ano durante a pandemia, suas opiniões sobre como a dance music pode retornar e o que ele planeja para o futuro próximo. Confira a seguir!

Conte sua história para o público brasileiro que talvez ainda não conheça você. Como você começou na Música Eletrônica?

Felizmente, fui ao primeiro evento do Robot Hearth em Nova York.

Isso mudou o que a música significa para mim e criou um novo sentimento de equilíbrio interior que desde então tenho procurado constantemente e encontrado dentro da própria música.

A partir disso, comecei a produzir música gradualmente, passo a passo e começando do básico.

Tudo que surgiu até aqui, veio

naturalmente, e eu não poderia desistir por nenhum motivo no mundo. A música realmente me deu o caminho para a paz interior e a felicidade.

O que mais gosta no Techno? Por que esse é o gênero que mais te atrai?

Techno é tão mesclado que tudo parece semelhante, mas na verdade não é. Quanto mais me aprofundo nisso, mais aprecio as diferenças sutis, os subgêneros.

O Melodic Techno em particular está naquele ponto ideal entre energia e a emoção, e influencia todos os outros gêneros agora.

Provavelmente em 10 anos isso será tão óbvio que o termo geral Melodic Techno não significará nada, ou tudo, dependendo de que lado você olhar.

Com 4 lançamentos na Afterlife de Tale Of Us em menos de um ano, a relação deve estar mais forte do que nunca. Como se conectou com eles? Adoramos saber sobre o começo de tudo!

Tudo aconteceu muito rápido, às vezes nem me lembro de onde comecei ou onde estou, mas sei para onde quero que isso vá, que é ficar por aqui. Você tem que trabalhar muito para entrar e ainda mais para ficar lá. Tudo isso começou onde é para todos e como deveria ser: com a música.

Comecei a enviar algumas faixas em 2019 e, curiosamente, a primeira foi ‘Analogy’. E aqui estamos. E nesse meio tempo, também existe um impulso crescente, ou desejo se me permite, que me fez desenvolver mais paciência do que eu pensava ter, mas também um fluxo constante e crescente em tomar iniciativas, como pegar aviões para ir ao encontro de pessoas, ou aprender e dominar áreas não necessariamente no cerne da música, como MIXMAG.COM.BR

Nada é entregue a você por aqui, você tem que agarrar com as próprias mãos e segurar firme.

E muito mais virá com certeza.

E sobre os próximos lançamentos?

Em que você anda trabalhando?

O ciclo de produção nem sempre está necessariamente alinhado com o ciclo de lançamentos: às vezes, uma faixa vai do início ao lançamento em alguns meses, e às vezes leva muito mais tempo.

No momento estou produzindo muito, experimentando, até tentando algumas novas colaborações, pois existem artistas que respeito muito, Marino (Canal) para citar apenas um, mas também estou buscando lançar algumas faixas feitas há muito tempo: Ameno, por exemplo, é uma faixa que nasceu como edição do original de um grupo francês chamado Era. Eles são muito únicos na verdade, já que cantam com palavras em latim inventadas, que não precisam de apresentações minhas, é claro.

Lançar esse tipo de faixa é um verdadeiro desafio, estou trabalhando nisso, o que me deu a chance de aprender muito sobre algumas áreas da indústria musical que eram definitivamente cinzentas para mim. Antes do verão também pode ter um remix chegando, o que seria a primeira vez para mim, nunca fiz ou mesmo tentei fazer um remix antes.

Rolou chances de fazer, mas por alguma razão, nunca fiz.

Nesse caso, o remix em que estou trabalhando é para uma dupla israelense chamada Jos & Eli, produtores muito interessantes com um estilo significativamente diferente do meu. O remix seria na Watergate, um selo histórico, e seria meu primeiro lançamento fora da Afterlife em tempos, então estou definitivamente colocando um esforço extra nele, já que cada passo precisa ser cuidadosamente ponderado, e erros não são permitidos.

ria com Yotto neste lançamento?

Colaborar com Yotto tem sido a coisa mais suave que já fiz: conexão musical instantânea, ida e volta sem esforço, e essa é apenas a parte profissional. Pessoalmente, ele é um cara ótimo, e isso tornou tudo ainda mais fácil.

Falando sobre as faixas em si, eu realmente as amo: New Era tem aquele soco típico de Yotto, mas ao mesmo tempo é um furacão de emoções no meu espaço “A Declaration of Love” / “Analogy”.

“Only One” é uma faixa tão descontraída que fiquei quase surpreso que algo assim pudesse sair de mim. E estão indo muito bem, o que é sempre bom, claro.

Este ano as coisas foram mais subidas e descidas, e tem sido mais sobre navegar pelos vários períodos de quarentena (e não) e ajustar constantemente. Eu toquei em vários eventos este ano porque alguns países estão um pouco à frente na curva de vacinas, ou simplesmente já estão se saindo melhor desde 2020.

Claro que isso veio com esforço extra junto: eu fiz algo como 15 testes PCR e fiquei em casa antes e depois dos eventos em intervalos de 2 semanas. Valeu a pena, eu realmente precisava sair por aí, ver as reações às novas faixas que venho produzindo e encontrar uma nova inspiração.

Como você lidou com a Pandemia e como isso afetou seu trabalho?

Soubemos que você fez um tour no México. Mais algum evento recebendo luz verde?

No ano passado, o lockdown foi um verdadeiro choque: moro na Itália, especificamente em Milão, que praticamente foi o epicentro de tudo, pelo menos na Europa.

Eu fiquei em casa por meses, o dia todo no estúdio, tentando não ler as notícias o tempo todo, e apenas me concentrando no desenvolvimento do meu som.

Estou no México agora, já fiz alguns shows e mais alguns estão por vir. Se tudo continuar como planejado, a situação deve se acalmar antes do verão e há planos de ir à Tunísia, Grécia, Índia, Líbano, Espanha, Holanda e até dar uma volta pela Itália. Depois do verão, também as Américas do Norte e do Sul entrarão MIXMAG.COM.BR

em cena. Todo mundo está esperando para começar de novo, assim que for seguro, é claro, e estou sonhando com isso.

Como você vê o futuro da música eletrônica e dos clubs em um futuro próximo?

Em vez de falar sobre minhas próprias ideias, que podem ser viáveis ​​ou não, acho que já existem vários exemplos de abordagens sustentáveis ​​para eventos: passaportes de vacina, ao ar livre, capacidade limitada, apenas pessoas sentadas, espaço alocado, apenas alguns dos temas em torno dos quais isso pode e será desenvolvido.

O que você pode dizer sobre sua nova equipe de management e os planos para levar a carreira ao próximo nível?

Este último ano me deu mais tempo do que nunca para me olhar mais como uma empresa do que apenas como um artista.

Existem tantas áreas diferentes que precisam ser levadas em consideração, e eu acho que apenas focar cegamente na música não é proativo o suficiente e, além disso, não é sustentável a longo prazo. Isso significa tentar desenvolver constantemente novos fluxos de trabalho, colaborações, ações de marketing e, o mais importante, ter as pessoas certas ao seu redor.

Nesse sentido, tenho muita sorte, pois minha agência mãe é a Encode Talent desde o primeiro dia, a agência Afterlife, é claro, administrada por um dos managers mais competentes e respeitados do setor. Além disso, agora sou representado pela CAA para as Américas do Norte e do Sul, o que

é uma garantia real. Por último, mas não menos importante, na Itália, que é um mercado próprio com práticas e relações de trabalho muito específicas, sou representado pela agência VLT. Mais uma vez, um grupo no topo desse jogo. É claro que os bookings são apenas parte do negócio e também estou constantemente trabalhando e desenvolvendo relacionamentos com parceiros de mídia, criadores de conteúdo e todos os tipos de parceiros de marketing para explorar todos os ângulos dessa selva chamada música.

Algum artista em particular que te inspira?

Parece uma resposta óbvia, mas na verdade não é: Tale of Us, Matteo em particular, porque ele foi quem eu conheci melhor nos últimos dois anos. Musicalmente,

é claro, eles escreveram uma grande parte dessa indústria na última década, e eu acho que isso é um fato, mas ele também me fez perceber o que ser um artista significa nos tempos modernos: música no centro, é claro, mas do que também a importância de ter a equipe certa ao seu redor, o poder de dizer não, a vontade de pensar sempre no amanhã e não só no hoje, são apenas algumas das reflexões que consegui pegar.

Olhando para a frente, tenho que adicionar Monolink a esta resposta: acabei de vê-lo se apresentar na semana passada (pela primeira vez). O que ele faz é uma loucura, a sensação que isso me deu foi de puro e poderoso techno, com um toque de Jazz / Rock & Roll, e tudo isso enquanto ele está cantando, tocando alguns sintetizadores e, claro, sua guitarra. ideia do limite até o qual você pode levar a criatividade. Como eu disse, uma loucura!

Que tipo de DJ você se considera?

No sentido de mood e não necessariamente de line up, um closing act com certeza: é onde minha atuação é a melhor. Se eu pudesse escolher, tocaria a noite toda todas as vezes, para ter a oportunidade e tempo de definir o clima desde o início com alguns sons ambientes, construir um clima techno e, então, construir progressivamente uma paisagem emocional. Isso obviamente não pode ser o caso em todos os MIXMAG.COM.BR

eventos, então naturalmente me especializei nessa parte final: eu começo meio hard, aí entram algumas das minhas faixas melódicas, com mais emoção, e aí eu toco o mais longo possível construindo e fechando o set. É assim que você pode realmente entrar no coração das pessoas e pode realmente criar uma jornada, com um começo e fim claros.

ainda faz. Não tenho certeza de como esses caras chegaram com isso e acho que estabeleceu um padrão tão alto que raramente foi alcançado desde então. Em segundo lugar, terei de escolher uma faixa minha, ‘A Declaration of Love’, não só porque sou genuinamente louco por ela, mas também porque é um disco que me definiu como artista e como pessoa: surgiu enquanto fazia uma importante escolha de vida e desde então tenho cumprido e provado que estou certo. Stephan Jolk is a fast rising artist right at the forefront of the melodic techno movement. His dramatic tracks and DJ sets unfold like immersive soundscapes with delicate keys and perfectly sequenced synths, bringing light and first and foremost, a high emotional charge. He has proven this in a very short space of time with four vital releases on Tale Of Us’ Afterlife in just one year, and a series of live sets in the most diverse settings, the last one taking place right at the center of the iconic Duomo Square in Milan.

He is very much focused on studio work, with an analog approach that blends unique textures and deep sounds, and that helps create absorbing and introspective moods. In this article we questioned him about how he came and climbed across the scene, how he

has spent the pandemic year, his views on how dance music can return, and what he has in the pipeline for the near future.

What is it that you love most about Techno? Why do you think this is the genre that attracted you most?

Tell your story to Brazilian audiences that may not know you yet. How did you start in Dance Music?

Techno is so blended, everything seems to sound similar but it actually is not. The more i dig into it and the more I appreciate the subtle differences, the sub genres.

Melodic Techno in particular is in that sweet spot between energy and emotion, and it is influencing all the other genres now. Probably in 10 years this will be so obvious that the general term Melodic Techno will mean nothing, or everything, depending on which side you want to look at this.

Luckily enough I went to the first ever Robot Hearth event in New York. That was it, it changed what music means for me and created a new feeling of inner balance that since then I’ve been constantly seeking, and finding inside music itself. I than got into producing music gradually, step by step, starting from the basics. Everything that came up until here, came naturally, and I could not give this is up for any reason in the world.

Music really gave me the path to inner peace and happiness.

With 4 releases on Tale Of Us’ label Afterlife in less than a year, that relationship must be stronger than ever. How did you hook up with the Afterlife crew?

Everything happened very fast for me, sometimes I don’t even remember where I started from or where I’m at, but I know where I want this to go, which is to stick around. You have to work hard to get in and even harder to stay there. All this started where is does for everybody and where it’s supposed to be: with the music.

I started sending some tracks back in 2019 and interestingly enough the first one was “Analogy”. And here we are.

Between than and here there has also been a considerable and growing drive, or desire if I may, that made me develop more patience that I thought I had, but also a constant and increasing flow of taking initiatives, as taking planes to go meet people, or learning in depth how to master areas not necessarily at the core of music, such as working with pictures and videos. Nothing is handed to you around here, you have to grab it with your own hands, and hold tight. More of that to come for sure.

What have you been working on ?

The cycle of producing is not always necessarily aligned with the cycle of releasing: sometimes a track goes from inception to release in a few months, and sometimes it takes much longer.

Right now I am producing a lot, experimenting, even trying some new collaborations as there are a few artists out there that I respect a lot, Marino (Canal) to name just one, but I m also trying to get out there some tracks that have been around in forever: Ameno for istance, it’s a track that was born as an edit of the original from a French group called Era. They are very unique in fact, as they sing with made up Latin words, but need no further introduction from me of course.

Releasing this type of track is a real challenge, I’m working on it and it has given me the chance to learn a lot about some areas of the music industry that were definitely grey. Before the summer there might also be a remix

coming, which would be a first for me, never done or even tried to do a remix before. There have been chances to do it but for some reason I always never did it. In this case the remix I am working on is for an Israeli duo called Jos & Eli, very interesting producers with a significantly different style from mine. The remix would be on Watergate, a rather historic label, and it would be my first release outside of Afterlife in a very long time, so I am putting definitely some extra effort into it, as every step needs to be carefully weighted, and no mistakes are allowed.

The New Era EP came out recently on Afterlife. How was working with Yotto in this release?

Collaborating with Yotto has been like the smoothest thing I ever did: instant musical connection, effortless back and forth, and that’s only the professional part. Personally he’s a great guy, and that made everything even easier.

Speaking about the tracks per se, I really love them: New Era has that typical Yotto punch but at the same time it’s a hurricane of emotions in my “A declaration of Love”/ “Analogy” space. “Only One” is such a laid back track, I was almost astonished that something like that could come out of me. Both did and are doing really well, and that’s always nice of course.

How did you deal with Quarantine and how it affected work?

Last year the lockdown was a real shock: I live in Italy, Milan specifically, which has sort of been the epicenter of this all, at least in Europe. I just stayed home for months, all day long in the studio, trying not to read the news all the time, and just focusing on developing my sound. This year things have been more up and down, and It has been more about navigating the various quarantine (and not) periods, and adjusting constantly. I played several events this year as some countries are a bit ahead with the vaccine curve, or have just been doing generally better already since last year. Of

course this came with some extra effort attached to it: I did something like 15 PCR tests and stayed home before and after the events at intervals of 2 weeks at the time. Worth it, I really needed to get out there, see the reactions to the new tracks I have been producing, and find some new inspiration.

We learned you’ve been touring in Mexico. Any more events already getting a green light to happen after these tours already planned?

I’m in Mexico right now, I already played a few shows and a couple more are coming up. If everything stays as planned, the situation should smooth out before the summer and there are plans to go to Tunisia, Greece, India, Lebanon, Spain, Holland, and even tour a bit around Italy. After the summer also North and South America will came into play. Everybody is waiting to get going again, as soon as it’s safe of course, and personally I’m day dreaming about this.

How do you see dance music & clubbing in near future?

Rather than talking about my own ideas, that may be feasible or not, I think that there are already several examples of sustainable approaches to events: vaccine passports, open air, limited capacity, seating only, allocated space, are just some of the few main themes around which this can and will be developed.

Any artists in particular that inspired / inspires you?

Seems like an obvious answer but it’s actually not: Tale of Us, Matteo in particular as he is the one I got to know better over the past couple years. Musically of course they have written a big chunk of this industry over the last decade, and I think that this is a fact, but than also he made me aware of what being an artist means in modern times: music at the core of course, but than also the importance MIXMAG.COM.BR

of having the right team around you, the power to say no, the urge to always think of tomorrow and not only today, are just some of the thinks I managed to pick up.

Looking forward, I have to add Monolink to this answer: I just saw him perform last week (for the first time). What he does is crazy, the feeling it gave me was that of pure powerful techno, with a sort of jazz / rock & roll intro flair, and all this while he is singing over it, playing some synths, and of course his guitar. It just redefined my idea of the limit to which you can push creativity. As I said, crazy!

What type of DJ do you consider yourself ?

In the sense of the mood and not necessarily of the line up, a closing act for sure: that’s where I perform best. If I could choose

I would play all night long every time, to have the opportunity and time to set the mood from the very beginning with some ambient sounds, buildup a techno mood, and than progressively build down into the emotional landscape. This obviously can not be the case at all times, so for It came naturally to specialize in that closing part: I come in sort of hard, than squeeze in some of my melodic and emotionally charged tracks, and finally I just play the longest possible build down/ closing part. That’s how you can really get into peoples’ hearts, and how you can really create a journey, as in something that has a clear beginning and ending.

What can you share about the new management team and career plans?

This last year has given me more

time than ever to look at myself as a company rather than only as an artist. There are so many different areas that need to be taken into consideration, and I think that just focusing blindly on the music is not proactive enough, and moreover it’s not sustainable in the long term. This means trying to constantly develop new work streams, collaborations, marketing initiatives, and most importantly having the right people around you. In this regard I am very lucky as my mother agency has been Encode Talent since day 1, the Afterlife agency of course, run by one of the most competent and respected managers in the business. In addition to that now I am represented by CAA for North and South America, which is of course a real guarantee. Last but not least, in Italy, which is a market of its own with very specific work practices and relaMIXMAG.COM.BR

tionships in place, I am represented by VLT agency.

Again a group on top of the game. Of course bookings are only part of the business and I am also constantly working and developing relationships with media partners, content creators, and all sorts of marketing partners to exploit every angle of this jungle called music.

Second I’ll have to choose a track of mine, “A declaration of Love”, not only because I genuinely am mad about it but also because it is a record that defined me as an artist and as a person: It came about while making an important life choice and I have since sticked to it and proven myself right.

To close the playlist I will just name 3 tracks that come to my mind, one from the past, one from the present, and one from the future: Epicur by David August, In gravitas by Apparat, and Morgen by myself (unreleased, coming out just before the summer).
