Artista em plena ascenção na cena techno, parceira de Juheun, Michelle Sparks é uma DJ e produtora que vem se descolando na multidão com seu som poderoso, reverenciado por fãs mundo afora.

e me ajudou a desenvolver meu gosto musical e a mergulhar mais fundo na descoberta do techno e minimal techno, que gostei muito.

Com trabalhos lançados pela consagrada Octopus Recordings, Michelle conquistou respeito de uma multidão, que a prestigia nos eventos presenciais da ‘Circuit’, label que ela comanda ao lado de Juheun, e nas lives que ganharam força com a ausência dos gigs durante a Pandemia.

Comecei a experimentar e aprender a ser DJ com as músicas que estavam me inspirando e tudo tomou forma a partir daí.

Avançando para 2011, me mudei para o Arizona e comecei a cuidar de um evento techno com Juheun chamado ‘Circuit’. Naquela época eu também comecei a produzir minha música e a aprimorar o som que faço hoje.

Batemos um papo com Michelle em um especial para a Mixmag.

Qual foi o salto mais importante que você deu na carreira?

Conte sua história aos brasileiros que ainda não te conhecem

Assinar com o Octopus foi definitivamente um dos elementos mais impactantes na minha carreira até agora, me deu uma plataforma para lançar minha música e desenvolver meu som específico. Quando assinei com a gravadora, comecei a perceber que todos fazemos muita música, mas isso não significa que tudo deva ser lançado ou que se encaixe na direção que queremos e nossa ‘vibe’ geral como artista.

Isso me ajudou a perceber que é importante avaliar a música que você faz e a visão de longo prazo de como isso se encaixa em seu catálogo como artista. E tambem que é bom sempre lembrar de colocar qualidade em vez de quantidade, uma lição que eu

Bem, eu comecei a ouvir dance music por volta de 2002, na época eu era realmente inspirada pela música de artistas como The Chemical Brothers, Paul Oakenfold e Kraftwerk. Eu não tinha ido a um evento real onde a música eletrônica era tocada naquela época, mas eu achei a música por si só bem interessante.

Por volta de 2005, fui à minha primeira balada underground na cidade de Nova York, onde estava cursando a faculdade, e fui imediatamente fisgada pela música, energia e pelas pessoas ao meu redor. Um amigo na época era DJ

diria que ajudou a contribuir para meu avanço como artista.

Conte sobre as gravadoras e artistas que você mais admira Meus sets são geralmente enérgicos e hipnotizantes com basslines minimalistas e sombrias, elementos de trippy rave infundidos por toda parte. Sempre tento fazer e tocar techno que tenha groove super pesado, e acho que esse é o som que mais me inspira.

Entre labels que ando mais curtindo atualmente estão Rekids, Planet Rhythm e Mindshake.

Eu tendo olhar muito para trás, para minhas raízes minimal, para artistas que me inspiram, Magda foi uma das minhas primeiras inspirações e, claro, Richie Hawtin, toda a equipe da Minus me inspirou e continua a me inspirar, a música que eles fazem é atemporal. Eles definiram o minimal-techno no início de 2000 e abriram para o techno de hoje, eu acho.

Atualmente, entre os artistas que acho que estão realmente indo além estão Matrixxman, Extrawelt e Shinedoe.

Você assinou com a Octopus em 2018 e, desde então, tocou nos showcases do label, mixou uma compilação e lançou o EP ‘Gloom’.

Como surgiu a parceria com um label tão importante?

Juheun e eu trouxemos Sian para um de nossos eventos ‘Circuit’ em Phoenix, por volta de 2014. Depois desse show, nós o convidamos mais algumas vezes para festas e mantivemos contato. Eventualmente enviei algumas músicas e assinei meu primeiro EP com eles e então meio que rolou a partir daí. O label se encaixa bem no meu som e me dá liberdade criativa para inovar constantemente.

Atualmente, sigo trabalhando em estreita colaboração com a equipe da Octopus e planejo lançar mais músicas com eles em breve.

Tem sido um ótimo lugar para desenvolver o som que pretendo fazer ao longo dos anos e estou ansiosa para que vocês ouçam o que tenho para lançar.

O que você fez de bom durante o período de lockdown?

Foi definitivamente um momento único para se adaptar a tudo, com certeza. Por volta do verão do ano passado, Juheun e eu pegamos nossos eventos ‘Circuito’ presenciais e os transferimos para uma programação semanal em live stream para ajudar a manter a comunidade techno conectada devido à falta de eventos. Atualmente, ainda fazemos todo sábado à noite. Também começamos a fazer lives com Sian e o canal Octopus Recordings pelo Twitch com DJ sets semanais e entrevistas.

Foi interessante fazer a transição para o tipo de eventos de streaming online em comparação com os eventos pessoais usuais, mas tornou-se uma boa saída para testar novas músicas e se conectar com os fãs. Eu também organizei um live stream chamado ‘Outside The Box’, para apresentar mulheres de talento na cena da música eletrônica, como plataforma para mulheres com ideias semelhantes se reunirem para discutir tudo relacionado à indústria.

Além de todas as coisas do streaming e online, passei uma boa parte do tempo em estúdio trabalhando em um novo material para o ano que vem. Foi revigorante no começo poder ter um tempo ininterrupto em estúdio, sem a distração de shows e viagens, então eu definitivamente fiz muita música nova. Mas no final do ano foi mais difícil encontrar inspiração, então fiquei feliz por ter o material de streaming para me manter ocupada.

Com as coisas voltando a funcionar, tem sido ótimo voltar a tocar ao vivo com interações e conexões reais com a pista.

Acho que o ano passado realmente nos obrigou a inovar para permanecermos conectados uns aos outros e com a música que amamos, e tem sido interessante ver como todos têm feito isso.

O que você recomenda aos novos talentos por aí, para que possam criar e desenvolver um som único e se diferenciar na cena?

Eu diria para sempre se lembrar por que você entrou na música eletrônica. Encontre músicas que realmente te impressionem e façam você sentir algo, estude-as e use-as para ajudar a moldar o tipo de música que você faz. Esses sons e experiências são o que nos inspira e devem formar a base para a música que você toca e cria. Não tente muito se encaixar no molde padrão de como “todo mundo” soa, não há nada de errado em se inspirar na música que está lá fora ou em seus colegas na indústria, mas realmente certifique-se de criar algo que tem a ver com “você”.

Como DJ e producer, o que está na programação?

Bem, recentemente fiz o remix para “WIWY” de Dusty Kid & Marascia, que foi uma experiência incrível, um clássico icônico.

With works released by renowned Octopus Recordings, Michelle conquered respect of the crowd, which gives her prestige in the ‘Circuit’ events, label she manages alongside Juheun, and in the lives format, which gained strength with the absence of live shows during the Pandemics. We chat with Michelle for this special Mixmag coverstory.

Please tell your story to your new Brazilian fans!

Well, I started listening to dance music around 2002, at the time I was really inspired by artists like The Chemical Brothers, Paul Oakenfold & Kraftwerk. I hadn’t been to an actual event where dance music was played at that time yet, but I found the music on its own to be really exciting.

underground party in New York City where I was attending college and was instantly hooked on the music and energy of the party and the people surrounding me.

One of my friends around that time was a DJ and he helped me develop my ear and dive deeper into discovering more techno & minimal techno which I found really captivating.

I began experimenting and learning to DJ with all the music that was really inspiring me and it all kind of took shape from there.

Fast-forward to 2011, I had moved to Arizona and began curating a techno event with Juheun called ‘Circuit’. Around that time I also began producing my own music and really honing the sound that I play and produce today.

What was your most important leap towards your career?

Signing to Octopus has definitely been one of the most impactful elements in my career so far by giving me a platform to release my music and grow my specific sound.

When I signed to the label I began to realize that we all make loads of music, but that doesn’t mean that it’s all up to par to put out or that it all fits the direction we want our overall ‘vibe’ to be as an artist.

It helped me realize that it’s important to assess the music you

make and the longterm vision for how that fits into your catalogue as an artist. Lastly, always remembering to put out quality over quantity is a lesson I would say helped contribute to my advancement as an artist.

Tell about abels and artists you admire and what you like to play My sets are generally energetic and hypnotizing with dark, grooving, minimal inspired basslines and trippy rave-infused elements throughout. I always try to make and play techno that has a super chunky groove to it, and find that is some of the music that inspires me the most.

A few of the labels I play a lot of music from currently are Rekids, Planet Rhythm and Mindshake.

I really tend to look back to my minimal roots a lot for artists that inspire me, Magda was one of my very early inspirations and of course Richie Hawtin, the entire Minus Records crew inspired me then and continue to do so now, the music they all put out was truly timeless. They defined the minimal-techno sound in the early 2000’s and opened the door for the direction techno has evolved to today I think. Currently a couple artists I think are really pushing the envelope are Matrixxman, Extrawelt, & Shinedoe.

You signed with Octopus Recordings in 2018 and have toured their showcases, mixed a compilation and released the EP ‘Gloom’.

How did it start the label?

Juheun and I actually brought Sian out to one of our ‘Circuit’ events in Phoenix around 2014.

After that show, we had him out a few additional times for some parties and kept in touch. Eventually I sent over some music and signed my first EP with them and then it just kind of developed from there. The label fits my sound well and allows me creative freedom to push the envelope constantly with fresh ideas. I’m currently continuing to work closely with the Octopus crew and plan to release some more music with them soon. It’s been a great spot to really develop the sound I’m aiming to make over the last few years and I’m looking forward to having you guys hear what I’ve got coming up next.

How did you use your time during the Pandemics?

It was definitely a unique time to attempt to adapt to that’s for sure. Around the summertime last year, Juheun and I took our ‘Circuit’ events from in person events and transitioned them to a weekly live-stream event to help keep the techno community connected through the lack of MIXMAG.COM.BR

events. Currently we still have those running each Saturday night. We also started streaming with Sian and the Octopus Recordings Twitch channel with weekly DJ sets & interviews.

It was interesting to transition to the online streaming type of events versus the usual in person events, but it became a nice outlet to test out new music & connect with fans. I also hosted a live-stream meetup called ‘Outside The Box’ which focused on featuring talented women in the electronic music scene and being a platform for like minded women to come together to discuss everything industry related.

Besides all of the streaming & online stuff, I spent a good portion of the time in the studio working on new material for the coming year. It was refreshing in the beginning to be able to have uninterrupted time in the studio without the distraction of gigs and traveling, so I definitely got a lot of new music made. But later on in the year it was more challenging to find inspiration so I was happy to have the streaming stuff to keep me busy as well.

With things beginning to open back up, it’s been refreshing to be returning to playing in person events with real interactions and connections with the dancefloor.

connected to one another and to the music we all love, and it’s been interesting to see the ways in which everyone has done so.

Coming up I have a couple releases scheduled on Octopus with some new originals that I’m really excited to share with you all.

What can you recommend to all fresh talents out there to create an unique sound and differentiate themselves in the scene?

Events are coming back so I’ve got an Octopus Warehouse Series event in LA that I’m playing with Sian & Juheun the end of July and then some additional shows around the USA later in the autumn 2021.

I would say to always remember why you got into dance music.

Find music that really hits you and makes you feel something and study that, and use it to help shape the type of music that you make. Those sounds and experiences are what inspires you and should form the basis for the music you play and create. Don’t try too hard to fit into the cookie cutter mold of what “everyone else” sounds like, there’s nothing wrong with gaining inspiration from music that’s out there or from your colleagues and peers in the industry, but really make sure to create something that has something to it that makes it speak to “you”.

As DJ & producer, what’s in the schedule for 2021 and beyond on the collabs, remixes and releases side? What’s coming ahead?

Well, I just recently did the remix for Dusty Kid & Marascia’s track ‘WIWY’, which was such an awesome experience since it was such an iconic classic.

In Arizona we’re beginning to take the ‘Circuit’ events back into the club for in person events and have a lot of exciting guests and events coming up the rest of the year.

Direto dos desertos inóspitos do sudoeste dos Estados Unidos, Juheun, rising star com base no Arizona, que vem se destacando no circuito techno internacional, explica que ao invés de deixar a peteca cair, fez o contrário e ligou o motores e soundsystems na máxima potência.

Sou um produtor de Techno dos Estados Unidos e atualmente tenho contrato com a Octopus Recordings de Sian. Produzo há pouco mais de 10 anos e sou DJ há quase 20.

assinei com a gravadora há quase 5 anos. Meu interesse original pela música eletrônica começou na cena Warehouse rave no final dos anos 90 com Progressive House, Deep House e Techno / Electro.

Naquela época eu era um fã e ia a todas as festas que podia.

Eventualmente, isso me levou a querer estar atrás dos decks em vez de na pista e aí a jornada começou. A cena ainda era muito underground naquela época, e não foi até meados dos anos 2000 que as coisas realmente começaram a decolar, mas no final da década tudo começou a ficar comercial aqui nos Estados Unidos e você começava a ver a cena musical evoluir para o EDM, bem na época dos blogs house.

Foi então que decidi que era hora de mudanças e aí nasceu Juheun.

Eu já estava consciente e ciente do que ainda estava acontecendo na cena underground e acompanhava os novos produtores e música que andava saindo. Muitas vezes eu me pegava colocando discos de techno realmente bons em meus sets de house, então era apenas uma questão de tempo antes de me comprometer totalmente. Estou feliz por ter feito isso.

Olá, Juheun favor, conte sua história para o público brasileiro

encontrar uma gravadora, especialmente hoje em dia que permanece constante com seu som e acho que supporting artists, à medida que crescem e evoluem de label para label, parecem funcionar para mim. Não me interpretem mal, com certeza existem gravadoras que sigo, e também é uma ótima maneira de descobrir novos artistas. Como artista, gosto de seguir gravadoras que combinem com o meu som tanto como DJ quanto como produtor.

Fora da Octopus, labels como Filth on Acid, Set About, Terminal M, Drumcode e 1605, são algumas que estão sempre no meu radar.

No que diz respeito a artistas, essa é uma pergunta difícil porque amo muitos. Mais recentemente, tenho me interessado por nomes como Melody’s Enemy, Indira Paganotto, Aardy, Egbert, Alex Stein, Michelle Sparks, Drunken Kong, Teenage Mutants, Victor Ruiz, Ezekiel (DE), Ghost Dance, Sleepy & Boo e Modeā, que estão sempre nas minhas playlists. É um EP de 3 faixas, com dois originais e um remix sensacional de Simina Grigoriu. Estou realmente ansioso por este lançamento, pois é parte do trabalho que fiz no início de 2020, literalmente antes do COVID e do lockdown. Eu estive ajustando e trabalhando nisso durante toda aquela loucura, então junto das coisas do streaming estava me mantendo ocupado no estúdio.

Este será meu EP de estreia na Set About, já que fiz um remix na gravadora em 2019 para o álbum “Break Soul” de Pablo Say. Eu também estou em estúdio trabalhando no meu próximo EP na Octopus com muito daquela clássica vibe techno despojada pela qual o label é conhecido.

Como usou o tempo durante a paralisação dos eventos na pandemias?

Sim, foi um ano surpreendentemente agitado, mesmo com COVID e lockdown. Além de não ter os shows habituais e agenda de turnês, conseguimos ficar ocupados com as transmissões ao vivo, mas também tentamos manter as coisas consistentes com os lançamentos durante esse tempo. Eu MIXMAG.COM.BR

sei que muitos artistas e labels deram um hiato ou desaceleraram cronogramas de lançamento no lockdown. Na verdade, fizemos o oposto e sentimos que precisávamos manter as coisas em movimento, pois sentimos que todos tinham mais tempo disponível.

O que você recomenda aos novos talentos por aí que querem se diferenciar na cena Techno?

Eu acho que é muito importante tentar esculpir um som único para você, mas também acho importante tentar ficar dentro da sua faixa e ter em mente que as coisas ainda precisam ser cortadas no mesmo tecido. Acho que é sempre difícil quando você está apenas começando a tentar definir seu som imediatamente. Você acaba gastando muito tempo experimentando e tentando “quebrar limites”, mesmo antes de aprender o essencial e o básico do que define o techno e o torna o que é. Invista tempo para realmente ouvir seus artistas favoritos e ver o que é comum entre cada um, quais elementos são consistentes de uma gravação para outra, escute o que faz com que todos se encaixem na mesma categoria ou gênero ‘Techno’ e siga a partir disso. Depois de aprender o básico, é muito mais fácil tentar adicionar sua vibe pessoal e seu tempero, para evoluir e ajustar as coisas que vão

ajudar a definir seu próprio “som”.

Como está a agenda? Tem mais news para compartilhar com seus novos fãs brasileiros?

Sim, estou muito animado para voltar à estrada! Este será nosso primeiro showcase da gravadora desde a pandemia em Los Angeles com os grupos 6AM/Work e Synthetik Minds. É sempre uma festa incrível com esses caras, então você sabe que vai ficar maluco! No dia seguinte, vou para São Francisco para ligar o Funktion One do famoso club Public Works. À medida que as coisas começarem a se reabrir em todo o país, estarei anunciando mais datas que estamos planejando, bem como uma viagem para o sul e fazendo meu caminho pela América do Sul e, com sorte, pelo Brasil, mais cedo ou mais tarde!

Straight from the inhospitable deserts of the southwestern United States, Juheun, an Arizona-based rising star who has been standing out on the international techno circuit, explains that instead of dropping the shuttlecock, he did quite the opposite and turned soundsystems at full power. .

What could be described as the most important leap you took towards your professional career in Dance Music and Techno?

been focused on Juheun heavily since signing on to the label almost 5 years ago now. My original interest in electronic music started in the warehouse/rave scene back in the late 90s with Progressive house, Deep House, and Techno/ Electro. Back then I was more of a fan and attended as many parties as I could. Eventually this led to wanting to be behind the decks instead of on the dance floor and the journey began. The scene was still very underground back then, and it wasn’t until the mid 2000s that things really started to take off, but towards the end of the decade things started to get really commercial here in the U.S. and you started to see the dance music scene evolve into EDM, right around the blog house days. This was when I decided that it was time for some change and Juheun was born. I was already conscious and aware of what was still happening in the underground scene and kept up with all the new producers and music that was still coming out. I often found myself dropping some really good techno records into my house sets from time to time, so it was only a matter of time before I committed to it fully. I’m glad I did.

Tell us about the labels and artists you admire most

I originally started with House music back in the day, but have

After the global success of the Acceleration EP by the iconic Octopus Recordings in 2016, the producer became a regular on Sion's label in LA and remains strong on the scene, releasing remixes, releases and live streams.

We spoke to the artist straight from his USA studio about his origins, plans and tips for artists looking to create an unique sound.

Please tell your story to Brazilian audiences. How did you start?

I’m a Techno producer from the United States and am currently signed to Sian’s Octopus Recordings imprint. I’ve been producing for a little over 10 years now and have been DJing for nearly 20.

It’s tough to find a label, especially these days that stay constant with their overall sound and I find that supporting artists as they grow and evolve from label to label seems to work for me. Don’t get me wrong, there’s definitely a few labels I follow, and it’s also a great way to discover new artists. As an artist myself, I like to follow labels that fit my sound both as a DJ and producer. Outside of Octopus, labels like Filth on Acid, Set About, Terminal M, Drumcode and 1605, are just a few that are always on my radar.

As far as artists, that’s a tough question cause I have so many that I love. Most recently I’ve been getting into stuff from artists like Melody’s Enemy, Indira Paganotto, Aardy, Egbert, Alex Stein, Michelle Sparks, Drunken Kong, Teenage Mutants, Victor Ruiz, Ezekiel (DE), Ghost Dance, Sleepy & Boo, and Modeā are always occupying my playlists. Your Acceleration EP on Octopus in 2016 was impressive and you’ve been a regular on the label ever since, including their amazing Live Stream series on Twitch.

Yes I’m still buzzing off my latest remix for Dusty Kid that just came out, but am now gearing up for my next release in October on Set About. Its a 3 track EP, with two originals and a smashing remix from Simina Grigoriu. I’m really looking forward to this release as this is some of the work that I made at the start of 2020, literally right before the COVID and lockdown hit. I’ve been fine-tuning and working on it during all that craziness so on top of the streaming stuff it was keeping me busy in the studio. This will be my debut EP on Set About as I did a remix on the label in 2019 for Pablo Say’s record ‘Break Soul’.

I’m also in the studio currently working on my next EP for Octopus. It’s got more of that classic stripped back pumping techno vibe the label is known for. So stay on the look out for that later in the year.

How did you use your time during the halt of events caused by the Pandemics? Tell us about things you created during this time.

Yes it’s been a surprisingly busy year even with COVID and lockdown. Outside of not having the usual gigs and touring schedule, we’ve managed to stay pretty busy with the live streaming as you mentioned, but also trying to keep things consistent with releaMIXMAG.COM.BR

ses during this time. I know many artists and labels took a bit of a hiatus or slowed down their release schedules during the lockdown.

We actually went the opposite and felt like we needed to keep things moving cause we felt people had more time on their hands and also in hopes that we will come out of the gates swinging while others were laying back in the cut.

What can you recommend to all fresh talents out there in order to craft a unique sound and differentiate themselves?

I think it’s very important to try and carve out a unique sound for yourself, but I also think it’s important to try and stay within your lane and keep in mind that things still need to be cut from the same cloth. I think its always tough when you’re just starting off to try to define your sound right away. You end up spending a lot of time experimenting and trying to ‘break boundaries’ even before learning the essentials and basics of what even defines techno and makes it what it is. Spend time to really listen to your favorite artists and see what is common between each one, what elements are consistent from record to record, try and hear what makes them all fit in the same ‘Techno’ category or genre and then go from there.

Once you get the basics down, it’s

much easier to try and add your personal vibe and spice to evolve and dial things in to help define your own ‘sound’.

You have gigs in San Francisco and LA coming up. How is the agenda for the coming months?

Yes, super excited to get back on the road! This will be our first label showcase since the pandemic in Los Angeles with the 6am/Work and Synthetik Minds groups. Its always a crazy party with those guys so you know its gonna get crazy! The day after I’m off to San Francisco to rock the Funktion One system at the infamous Public Works nightclub. As things start to open back up across the country, I’ll be announcing more dates we have in the works, as well as planning a trip down south and making my way around South America and hopefully Brazil sooner than later!
