Kian App

An App that brings IOT [internet of things ] to light switches in a very intuitive and quick manner, given current technology.

Background

Kolors Switches, is a B2C electrical and electronic switch manufacturing company based in India. Kian is a new switch range of the company that is electronic and has a touch based operation running on RFID and wifi technology. An app was to be made for this range, Kian. Why do we need an app for switches? The basic idea of the app is to control all lights and other equipments digitally. The immediate thought was why would someone use a screen to operate the switches when it is quite convenient to operate them manually. The answer was CONVENIENCE, CONTROL and FLEXIBILITY in an increasing Wcomplex scenario of lighting of spaces. My Role Wireframing, Conceptualization, Visual Design Supervision Methods used Task analysis, understanding pain points, Card sorting, Iterations, User testing

Insights The entire task needs to be more convenient than operating a switch physically. It should be more intuitive than it is in the real world. Opportunities Recognition of which switch corresponds to which light is an issue we face in the physical world too. Technology provides an answer Design guidelines 1] More convenient 2] Intuitive 3] Quicker than operating a switch physically

3 step process

Intuitive

Tasks to be completed

For Setup 0] Create login 1] Feeding the rooms that one wants to control on the app 2] Feeding the no. of lights/devices one wants to operate in individial rooms . Also mark their positions for ease of use 3] Set scenes 4] Assign passwords, if required for certain lights/scenes/ rooms 5] Be able to change all/any of the above settings For regular use 1] To be able to see if any light is On anywhere 2] To be able to Off the lights of a room by single touch 3] To be able to off entire apartment lights in one touch 4] To be able to navigate from one room to another with ease 5] To be able to operate individual light/scene of particular room 6] To be able to set timer for On/off 7] To be able to set intensities of dimmer etc

Wireframing Sequence - stage 2 Stage 1 was diary brainstorming

The wireframes were tested on 8 individuals with varying levels of knowledge of an app controlling their switches. Glithes were resolved . The screens were made crisper with the appropriate amount of information required on the screen

Prototypes Tested What Feasibility, time taken and desirability Impact Simplification of UI from 7 step to 3 step. Saves time and makes switch operation on the app simpler than the physical one

Screens - Set up

Same soft glow treatment to rectangle and arrow with same blink kind of motion

Blink motion for the arrow and device icon – both in soft glow [suggesting to drag and place the device ]

Regular Use

Yellow line means at least 1 switch is in ON position in the room

Swipe down on the icon to OFF the lights of a room, accompanied by sound of switch operation

Once a device ie fan/light is clicked, it glows in yellow if we are starting the device i.e ON position and vice versa

Yellow filter in the icon indicates at least 1 switch is on in that room.
