Rodents are a common pest and don't make for a hygienic or productive workplace. There are a number of signs to indicate their presence which can often be found at the early stages of infestation. Things to look out for are: • • • • • •

Droppings – spindle shaped measuring about 10-20 millimetres long. Nesting material (small pieces of chewed paper and plastic). A musty smell similar to a damp unventilated area or wet hay or straw. You may hear squeaks, rustling and scampering sounds as they make their way around. Damaged or spoilt food. Black or dark grey smear marks. Are alarm bells ringing? Do you recognise the signs? Studies have shown that mice are developing behavioural and chemical resistance to common methods of extermination, for example traps and rodenticides. We have labelled these as “super mice”. This method allows our technicians to place traps and rodenticides much more accurately, avoiding any guesswork. This reduces the quantity of toxic poisons, and can significantly reduce the time required to achieve eradication. Ultimately you get a clearer view of where the infestation lies and the extent to where the mice are infesting.

Archie is able to: • Identify and specifically locate active mouse infestations with a high level of accuracy compared with other methods. • Ignore old infestations and focus only on current activity. • Ignore the scents of other types of rodents and sniff out only mice

MITIE use thermal imaging to identify areas of live rodent activity. This provides effective management and allows a more targeted approach in the eradication of rodents. We are able to see rodent infestations through various materials from as far as 50 feet away.

The Benefits of using Thermal Imaging

• • • • •

Cleaner and highly effective method of identifying and controlling pest activity. Accuracy in identifying where the mice are and their nests. If mice are nesting in hidden areas (partitions/ voids) thermal imaging gives the locations More targeted approach in placing bait/traps without the need for guesswork. A reduction of the use of toxic products that would normally have been used to control an infestation

The use of luminous tracking dust provides an accurate display of where and how the rodents are entering the building allowing a more targeted use of baits and other control methods. The tracking dust is a non-toxic fluorescent chemical surrounded by a powdered. As mice or rats trek through their regular ‘runs’, their feet and bodies become dusted with fluorescent powder. The rodents create a trail of powder left as footprints where they walk or “body” prints where they rub against an entry or exit point. Ultraviolet torches brightly illuminate a single piece of fluorescent dust, therefore shows ingress points and movement. This allows traps and baits to be targeted effectively, rodents and nests inside the building to be eliminated, and entry points to be permanently sealed to prevent further rodent problems.

A mouse only needs an opening of a quarter inch (6mm) to get into your house which is why proofing is so important. These works can include: You want to seal up the most common entry points pipes, wires, cables and underneath doorways. •

Door proofing with brush strip

Concertina proofing with brush strip

Use cement mortar around pipes

12 gauge galvanised weld mesh, aluminium plates, and thrixotropic mouse resistant paste to required areas

There are a variety of rodent traps that can be used against rats, mice, squirrels and glis glis. The traps can be: • • • • •

Live catch humane traps Traditional snappy break back traps Specialist heavy duty traps for larger animals Glue ‘sticky board’ traps Traps that use CO2 or electrocution to dispatch the target pest.

The technician will advise the appropriate means of trapping depending on pest species, location, quantity of infestation and requirement for control. All traps designed to ‘live trap’ will be inspected daily.

Exterior metal/plastic rat and mouse bait stations are placed within the site boundary. The bait stations will be securely fixed in place by: • • •

screws ground stakes zinc plated chain

The various types of bait stations include: • • • • •

Internal bait box Litter bin external bait Subterranean external bait Ultrabait external bait Multiguard external bait
