MITIE Facilities Management really has been at the forefront of environmental delivery for many years. Our Cleaning business introduced a viable waste and environmental operation which has since became fully integrated and is now one of the leaders in the industry. We also created the TREEHUGGERŽ brand and range of products in our efforts to deliver sustainable waste management solutions and deal responsibly with our clients’ waste. Our Pest Control business attained ISO 14001 status over 10 years ago and now extends across all areas of our FM business. The following pages describe our approach to the environment and also define our CarbonCare offering which guarantees to save you money on your energy usage.

Environmental management MITIE operates effective management processes and procedures to manage the limited environmental impacts of our business. The management of these impacts is as important as that of all other aspects of the business. We have developed an environmental improvement programme with the assessment and measurement of our environmental impacts being the driver for the setting of clear, achievable objectives in each area of our activities. We are committed to eliminating pollution and will minimise any consequential negative environmental effects that may occur. Our waste and environmental specialists have launched a new environmental consultancy to all MITIE’s clients as a direct result of organisations requiring better processes and systems to improve their performance and substantiate their sustainability claims. Our offering means we are now able to provide a qualified consultant to assist clients with the audit, design, implementation and operation of a brand new Environmental Management System (EMS), to the ISO 14001 standard.

Key environmental impacts
Consumables and packaging We work closely with our consumables provider Bunzl to ensure that all consumables are environmentally friendly and packaging is readily recycled. The Pur-Eco products are supplied in a re-usable trigger spray bottle from recycled plastic and last for more than two years. Waste minimisation & recycling We will adhere to your waste minimisation and recycling policies and ensure all staff are fully trained in sustainable waste management practices.

Detergents and chlorine Whilst cleaning detergents are needed in specific situations we opt to use a range of products that are kinder to the environment. Pur-Eco is a product range specially designed to provide both cleaning efficiency and maintain respect for the environment. These products meet the strict environmental and safety criteria of the internationally recognised ‘European Flower’ and ‘Scandinavian Nordic Swan’ eco-labels and are certified by both schemes. They’re effective at low dosage and packaged in recycled plastic to minimise use and disposal of chemicals and also waste.

Accreditation ISO 14000 is a series of international standards on environmental management providing a framework for the development of an environmental management system and supporting audit programmes. ISO 14001 is regarded as the corner stone of the ISO 14000 series and represents a framework of control against which MITIE can be certified by a third party (in our case, the auditing organisation Buenas Veritas).
MITIE now holds 98% ISO 14001 accreditation and was one of the very first FM companies to receive it.

TREEHUGGER® battery recycling: This works on the same principle as the paper unit but it collects batteries instead. These are then collected by our waste team at regular intervals and the batteries disposed of safely. TREEHUGGER® toner cartridge recycling: Our TREEHUGGER® toner units are larger than the paper and battery units but are still from recycled cardboard. The toner cartridges are collected by our waste teams and recycled, with all profits from this exercise donated to charity.

TREEHUGGER® paper recycling: This is a single sheet of recycled cardboard that folds into a sturdy upright box capable of holding 500 A4 sheets of paper. Each time they are emptied you colour in a portion of the tree on the side panel. Colouring all 30 portions mean you have saved the equivalent of a virgin tree. They are available as part of our joined-up waste minimisation strategy, at a small unit cost and allow individual team members to monitor their paper use and provide a measurable statistic for your own reporting purposes. To date over 35,000 units have been sold to clients, including government departments, multinationals and huge banks.

TREEHUGGER® TREEHUGGER® Truck Our Waste & Environmental team has created the motherof-all brand extensions with the TREEHUGGER® Truck. The TREEHUGGER® Truck is designed to speed up rates of recycling for specific waste items like cardboard, glass and plastic bottles in the form of waste-specific bales. It’s the answer to many companies’ recycling and sustainability worries and has the added benefit that it saves on fuel and emissions by reducing the vehicles used for recycling needs. On average, companies have four different collection vehicles coming to their site to take general waste, paper, card, and various other recyclables. The TREEHUGGER® Truck does this in one single collection and in the process reduces associated carbon emissions.

Environmental Improvement Policy Summary As a strategic outsourcing and energy services company, MITIE strives to make a net positive impact on the use of natural resources in our service delivery. We’re committed both as an organisation and through the delivery of our CarbonCare (www.mitie.com/carboncare) programme to deliver positive environmental improvements as part of our overall sustainability agenda. For this reason, our improvement programme is both internally and externally facing; addressing the challenges our clients face while demonstrating our capability to minimise and wherever possible eliminate similar carbon driven issues across our own estate portfolio. That’s why we’ve operated an Environmental Management System (EMS) for the last decade and currently hold 98% ISO14001 certification across the businesses.
