WOW! Have we been “active” in the communities of the Breezeway! East Jordan and Ellsworth have so much to celebrate and showcase to our residents and visitors this year. The amazing Don and Eileen Klein Nature Trail has been completed in East Jordan. This universally accessible boardwalk takes you out onto the Jordan River for a memorable nature experience on Michigan’s first designated wild and scenic river. The boardwalk is a photographer or birding enthusiast’s dream. The trail will be open year-round for all to enjoy. Thank you to everyone who made this magnificent boardwalk possible. Be sure to check out the Friends of the Jordan Watershed Center and Sportsman’s Park while vising the Klein Trail. And don’t miss another way to get “active”... Stroll on the Jordan Art Walk to enjoy all the beautiful sculptures.

The Village of Ellsworth has been “active” with a wayfinding sign project throughout the community. Striking new signs and a kiosk have been installed at the village entrances and at Community Square. The project continues to unfold with additional signs to be added in the future.

Throughout the communities, new businesses continue to open, existing businesses celebrate major milestones and success. Existing houses are being updated and new business ventures are being started or planned. The excellent quality of life the region provides continues to attract individuals of all ages to relocate here.

The Jordan Art Walk is a series of sculptures strategically placed throughout the downtown community, integrated with the beautiful ‘Joining Jordan Boardwalk.’ The project began in 2021 and sculptures have been added each yearsome for sale, some not. Beginning last year, those sculptures that were not permanent pieces in the Art Walk were then rotated out so that the Art Walk is now an evolving exhibit.

The Ironton Ferry began operation in 1876. At first, the operator took individual passengers across Lake Charlevoix in a rowboat. The ferry acquired nationwide fame in 1936, when Ripley's Believe it or Not! listed the Ironton Ferry's Captain Sam Alexander for travelling 15,000 miles while never being more than 1,000 feet from his home.

And don't miss the outdoor Earth Tones Musical Garden where you can explore instruments made of stone, wood and metal.

Lake Charlevoix

The Jordan River

The 24.9-mile-long Jordan River is the largest tributary of Lake Charlevoix. Its headwaters rise from springs in the upper Jordan River Valley northeast of Mancelona in Antrim County. The Jordan River was the first river to be designated in Michigan's Natural Rivers Program and is well known for its world-class brook trout fishing and scenic canoe, kayak and raft trips. The river is accessible by many roads & trails.

Lake Charlevoix was once voted the second best lake in America in a USA Today poll, behind only Lake Tahoe. Being awarded this honor is partly due to the many forms of recreation the lake provides, including swimming, kayaking, sailing, fishing, diving, boating, water skiing, and just relaxing on the beach. Lake Charlevoix is also one of Michigan’s largest and most magnificent lakes. It is the 3rd largest lake in the state in terms of surface area, but its shoreline length far exceeds that of any other inland lake in Michigan. If you kayak the entire shoreline of Lake Charlevoix, you will have traversed 60 miles!

Chain of Lakes Water Trail

The Chain of Lakes Water Trail is one of only eight state-designated water trails and the only water trail in Northern Michigan. This non-motorized water trail has over 80 miles of routes to explore and something for all types of paddlers.

The Upper Chain is made up of smaller lakes and is a great experience for beginner paddlers. Begin, end or pass through three lakeside communities - Ellsworth, Central Lake, and Bellairewhere you will find food, camping, and all the other amenities.

The Lower Chain includes larger lakes like Torch Lake and Elk Lake for experienced paddlers. Explore the Grass River Natural Area, find a sunken ship, or just enjoy the turquoise waters of Torch Lake. TRAILS & PRESERVES

Little Traverse Conservancy

The mission of the Little Traverse Conservancy is to protect the natural diversity and beauty of northern Michigan by preserving significant land and scenic areas, and fostering appreciation and understanding of the environment. Our service area includes Chippewa, Mackinac, Emmet, Cheboygan, and Charlevoix counties.

Maps can be found on the website, at local Chamber of Commerce offices, or by mail (call the Conservancy at 231-347-0991 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. MondayFriday). The Conservancy also offers a number of guided hikes and other activities throughout the year, so check the website: www.landtrust.org.

Jordan Valley Pathway

Explore Area Preserves:

Rogers/Dressel/Jordan River Preserve:

From downtown East Jordan, travel northeast and then south on M-32 for 1.3 miles to Rogers Road. Turn right and the preserve is 1/2 mile down on the right.

Raven Ridge Nature Preserve:

From downtown East Jordan, travel east on C48 approximately 3.5 miles to Pearsall Rd. Turn right, then immediately turn left onto Fuller Rd. Turn right in about 1.5 mi.

St. Clair Lake/Six Mile Lake Natural Area: From Ellsworth, take C48 east approximately two miles to South Arm Township Park and a small parking area on the right (south) side of the road. There is a rustic boat launch on the river.

Nathan Beem Memorial Nature Preserve: 105 Acres with 1,880 feet of shoreline on the east side of Six Mile Lake.

The Jordan Valley Pathway is an 18-mile hiking trail in the Jordan River Valley. The pathway winds through the Mackinaw State Forest along the Jordan River. This scenic valley is well worth a trip in any season, however fall colors are noteworthy due to its rich hardwood forests. Its looped trail system is mixed with moderate to rugged topography, providing excellent opportunities for hikers and backpackers. The full pathway is a good two-day hike. Backpackers can stay at the Pinney Bridge State Campground, located near the trail’s halfway point (dispersed camping is not allowed in the Jordan Valley). Hikers can conveniently start and end at the same place if completing a smaller loop or the whole trail. This trail houses four different trailheads that allow access to the pathway, with the main trailhead located at Deadman’s Hill Overlook. No biking is allowed on the Jordan Valley Pathway.

No reason to “hunker down inside” for the winter. Put on your gear & get outside. Enjoy our cross-country ski & snowshoeing trails. How about a winter raft experience on the Jordan River or an ice-fishing adventure?

Ski or Snowboard at Boyne Mountain; then play, play, play at Avalanche Bay.

Trails, Trails, Trails!

Northern Michigan trails for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are spectacular. With woods, dunes, frozen lakes, and spectacular vistas, Charlevoix County is the place to be DecemberMarch. Many outfitters rent cross-country skis and snowshoes.

Boyne Mountain - The Boyne Nordican has it all for gliders, skaters and telemark skiers. Groomed for skating and striding, here you’ll find 50K of trails, with 12 loops. Oh, and don't miss walking SkyBridge! www.boyne.com

Several fishing piers for rainbow and brown trout; in autumn, view the spawning Chinook salmon. Many wonderful renovations have been made this year (see story on p. 57), including a Universal Accessible Launch. Also home of the Jordan River Watershed Center and the Friends of the Jordan.

Located only one block off Main Street, the Municipal Harbor is within walking distance to local restaurants and friendly shops.

Open May 15 - October 15, the Municipal Harbor offers 27 seasonal boat slips, 27 transient boat slips, shopping docks, full-service gasoline, pump-out station, ice and restrooms. Shower facilities are available for seasonal and transient slip holders.

Memorial Park & Band Shell

Location: 101 Spring St.

Memorial Park is the land entry to our beautiful Harbor. It’s a lovely place to enjoy a picnic or to just relax while watching birds, boats and fishing action.

In 2005, a bandshell was constructed in the park which has live entertainment most weekends throughout the summer. There are picnic tables, grills and public restrooms within the park.

Also, in Ellsworth, visit Ellsworth Community Park & Ellsworth River Park. In Atwood, visit Antrim Creek Natural Area & Banks Township Park.

Don & Eileen Klein Nature Trail

A longtime dream for East Jordan is coming to fruition this year!

The brand-new Don & Eileen Klein Trail from Sportsman’s Park to the Rogers Family Homestead Nature Preserve (Rogers Preserve) will create a universally accessible trail that takes you along the edge of the beautiful Jordan River. This trail provides for a continuous trail opportunity from downtown East Jordan to the north end of the Rogers Homestead trail, a total of two miles in one direction. Opportunities to join the trail will also exist at Sportsman’s Park, the Friends of the Jordan Watershed Center, and the two parking areas on the north and south ends of the Rogers Preserve. The completion of this trail was made possible by a lead donation from Don Klein, a multitude of other donors, and a partnership between the City of East Jordan, Little Traverse Conservancy, Friends of the Jordan Watershed Center, the East Jordan Chamber, and the East Jordan Trails Committee. Friends of the Jordan River Watershed Center getting ready for a very "Active" 2024 & Beyond!

In anticipation and excitement for the opening of the Don & Eileen Klein Memorial Boardwalk, the Friends of the Jordan River has been very busy updating and upgrading its building (which just happens to be East Jordan’s oldest commercial building) located at 101 Union Street. The building underwent a power washing, had new shingles put on the porch roof, a complete deck railing remodel and staining of the deck. The building and its nearby pavilion (perfect for picnics, lunches, meetings, etc.) were repainted as was he inside of the building this past year. During the upcoming summer of 2024, FJR will be enhancing the lighting around the deck and in its pavilion. Summer organization projects include checking the water quality of the Jordan River in five locations on the river and doing a macroinvertebrate study of bugs on the Jordan River. New this summer, the Watershed Center Building will be open with part time hours thanks to volunteer docents. Don’t miss visiting this historic building when in the area. www.friendsofthejordan.org

East Jordan’s Sportsman’s Park Undergoes Major Upgrades in 2024!

After a long time coming the East Jordan Sportsman’s Park completed several major upgrades just in time for an exciting 2024 season! The project included:

• Constructed access site for non-motorized vessels from the Jordan River

• ADA flotation access structure with accessibility to river fishing pier/boardwalk

• Trailer parking

• Boardwalk and pier completely refurbished with decking, railing and lighting

• Continued walkway from Joining Jordan to restrooms and connector route

• Restroom building renovated for 2 family-style restrooms

• Connector trail to FJR

• Fishing pier repairs along pond

Grand Army Republic Park

The Grand Army Republic Park located on Main and Williams Streets in East Jordan has undergone a major renovation this year by the American Legion Post #227 Rebec-Hosler Sweet Post and the East Jordan Shoe Club. The newly landscaped park features a gazebo, a display of military flags and the incredible Jordan Valley Honor Star.

The Shoe Club - "Stories of Service"

The East Jordan Shoe Club, a leadership club for middle school students and high school mentors, worked on a yearlong Honor & Service Project to honor our local heroes - past, present and future.

One part of their project was a heartwarming collaboration in which Shoe Club students embarked on a journey to interview local East Jordan veterans for a book celebrating honor and service. With an eagerness to learn from the brave men and women who have served our country, these young writers captured inspiring stories that underscored the values of sacrifice, courage, and gratitude. Through these interviews, students forged a connection with the veterans, fostering a deeper appreciation for the sacrifices made in the name of honor and service. Also included in the book is a reflection essay written by each Shoe Club member on what honor and service means to them. We take immense pride in this comprehensive 300-page historical reference documenting East Jordan's rich history. Available for purchase at the Chamber office.

Banks Township

Banks Township is a rural jewel in the north end of Antrim County. Ellsworth Community School

Ellsworth Community School has a long and distinguished history of offering unequaled educational opportunities. Our motto “Big School Opportunities, Small School Relationships” summarizes our approach to education. Each student at Ellsworth is nurtured and encouraged to sample many academic and extra-curricular activities and to develop his or her unique talents. Most students actively participate in numerous before and after school activities while attending Ellsworth Community School.

With a small student to teacher/staff ratio, all Ellsworth students have access to opportunities that are virtually unheard of in other schools its size, including; free developmental pre-school, full day kindergarten, on-line learning opportunities for advanced classes and credit recovery, college credit at no charge to students, music/ art/physical education for all students, iPads in every classroom, one-one laptops for all high school students, and access to career/technical education programs in graphic arts, agriculture, and building trades.

Ebenezer Christian School

Ebenezer Christian School in Ellsworth, founded in 1945, is a non-denominational school. Our Preschool was founded in 2002. The preschool uses Zoo Phonics which is a method developed to make children strong readers at an early age. Our students use iPad’s during the school year which are integrated into their curriculum. The teacher incorporates online learning in all subjects and utilizes apps that are created specifically for education. Though we are a small school, we offer a great education in a loving environment and strive to be an extension of the home.

North Central Michigan College

Since 1958, North Central Michigan College in Petoskey has been opening the door to academic success for residents by offering two-year associate degrees in the arts and sciences that are transferable to upper division colleges and universities. In addition, North Central has paved the path to better-paying careers through its applied science programs in business, education, health science, criminal justice, information technology and manufacturing.
