hope this message finds you well and enjoying a relaxing summer. As we move into August, I want to take a moment to share some reflections, provide updates, and recognize the collective efforts that continue to elevate our Club as a premier institution in St. Louis and beyond.

This summer has been nothing short of inspiring. From a bustling Jack Buck Grille and 1903 Bar, to swim meets, and our always popular summer camps, the Club has been filled with energy at the West and Downtown Clubhouses. It has been a joy to witness members of all ages enjoying all that the Club has to offer.

I want to extend a special thank you to our staff, who have worked tirelessly to ensure that all our summer events, programs, and amenities were delivered with excellence. From culinary service to fitness to hospitality, their professionalism and attention to detail do not go unnoticed. They are a large part of the reason the MAC was recognized once again as a Platinum Club of America.

Thank you to all the members who took the time to complete the recent member survey. We were thrilled to receive an outstanding response, with input from over 1,100 members. Your feedback is incredibly valuable and is being carefully reviewed as we assess comments related to our facilities, dining, athletic programs, and overall member services. This thoughtful input will help shape the future of our Club as we continue the long-term master planning process for both the West and Downtown Clubhouses. Our partners at Peacock + Lewis will visit in late August to conduct a series of town halls, where they will share preliminary updates and gather insights to guide the West Clubhouse master planning. More details will be shared in the months ahead, and I thank you for your continued support and enthusiasm as we look to the future.

I am also pleased to share a brief update on the exciting MAC Clayton Clubhouse, which continues to build momentum with nearly 600 members already opting in. We anticipate opening our membership office on the first

floor of the Pierre Laclede building in early August to begin welcoming interest from non-MAC members. Our GM/ COO, Chip Misch, along with Greg Gerber, Director of Operations at MAC Clayton, and the Clayton Task Force, have been working closely with the landlord and design team on proposed enhancements to the existing space. Members can look forward to a well-balanced mix of updated finishes while preserving many of the location’s original features. This new amenity is an important step in our ongoing commitment to evolve and meet the dynamic needs of our membership. Although we’re still in the early stages, I look forward to sharing more updates in the months ahead.

Our fiscal year budgeting process for the year beginning Sept. 1 is well underway. This important work ensures that we continue to steward Club resources responsibly while aligning with our strategic goals and the evolving needs of our membership. I am grateful to our Finance Committee, management team, and Board of Governors for their thoughtful input and collaboration throughout this process. I look forward to sharing highlights of the approved budget in the coming months.

As the month continues, I am excited to highlight our upcoming Speaker Series event on Aug. 27 at the Downtown Clubhouse, featuring St. Louis Mayor Cara Spencer. Mayor Spencer will deliver a "State of the City" address, offering valuable insight into key initiatives and the future of our city. This promises to be another outstanding installment in the MAC Speaker Series, and I encourage all members to attend. Be sure to reserve your spot by registering on the MAC app!

I wish you a wonderful remainder of the summer and look forward to seeing you around the Club!

Warm regards,

Michael J. Kozeny, President Missouri Athletic Club

LETTER FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER

I’m pleased to share several exciting updates from the Missouri Athletic Club!

August is Foundations' Month, a time when our members’ generosity shines brightest. Keep an eye out for the green chits available throughout the Club’s outlets and consider pledging to the Sports Foundation, the Charitable Society for Children, or both. More information is available in Larry Absheer’s article on page 6 of this issue of the Cherry Diamond. Thank you, as always, for your support. We have wrapped up another outstanding swim season, which culminated in our annual awards banquet in the Downtown Ballroom. More than 260 MAC athletes participated this year! A heartfelt thank you to our swim coach, Lauren Fonseca, along with Joy Holdmeier and Jeff Tuhro, for their leadership and dedication to making this season both competitive and fun.

As mentioned in President Kozeny’s column, the recent Master Planning survey was a success, with strong participation and valuable insights to help guide the Club’s future. In the weeks ahead, we’ll share a summary of the findings and how they’ll be incorporated into the planning process.

WHAT’S NEXT?

You are invited to join us for a series of Master Planning workshops taking place August 19-21 at both the Downtown and West Clubhouses. The architecture and hospitality design firm Peacock + Lewis will return to present a series of proposed plans for the West Clubhouse and its surrounding campus. These sessions are designed to be interactive and collaborative, shaped by input from past town halls, the recent member survey, and ongoing conversations with Club leadership. We encourage all members to attend. Your feedback is crucial to shaping the future.

We’re also proud to share that the MAC has once again been recognized as a Platinum Club of America, ranking #7 among athletic clubs nationwide. This prestigious honor is awarded every two years and is based on seven key criteria:

F Universal Recognition

F Excellence in Amenities and Facilities

F Caliber of Staff and Service

F Member Engagement and Commitment

F Governance and Fiscal Management

F Adaptability to Changing Times

F Overall Member Experience

What makes this recognition especially meaningful is that it’s voted on by club peers. It’s a testament to the dedication of our entire team and the commitment of our membership.

1. Detroit Athletic Club

2. Atlanta Athletic Club

3. The Olympic Club

4. New York Athletic Club

5. Washington Athletic Club

6. Multnomah Athletic Club

7. Missouri Athletic Club

8. Port Royal Club

9. Los Angeles Athletic Club

10. The Denver Athletic Club

Finally, the Finance Committee and management team are finalizing next year’s budget. We’re seeing exceptional growth in both revenue and new memberships. At the heart of our planning efforts is our commitment to enhancing the MAC experience in every possible way.

As always, if there is anything we can do to make your experience better, please don’t hesitate to reach out to a member of the management team.

MAC FOUNDATIONS CORNER

Leaving a Legacy

AUGUST IS FOUNDATIONS’ MONTH

Throughout August, MAC members have the opportunity to contribute to our Foundations by simply adding a donation to their chit when dining at the Club. This hassle-free and accessible method greatly bolsters our Foundations.

SPORTS FOUNDATION

At the MAC, our future rests in your hands, and we wholeheartedly value your backing. All donations are eligible for tax deductions, making your support even more meaningful.

CHARITABLE SOCIETY FOR CHILDREN

The Sports Foundation’s mission is to advance, inspire and honor exceptional accomplishments in the realm of athletics. In pursuit of this objective, the foundation identifies and commends individuals who have made remarkable contributions and achieved outstanding feats within the field of athletics.

The Charitable Society for Children (CSC) serves as an integral part of the Sports Foundation, functioning as a Club Within the Club. Its primary goal is to extend financial support to local St. Louis children’s charities while actively dedicating time and resources to the community. Charities are nominated by both MAC members and employees, and these nominations are subsequently reviewed by the CSC Committee. From the pool of nominations, the committee selects three beneficiaries for the year. Following a vote, Books for STL Kids, Butterfly Kisses Alliance, and KidSmart STL have been chosen as this year’s sponsored charities by the CSC.

The CSC Committee is a permanent committee of the MAC Sports Foundation, a 501(c)3 organization recognized by the U.S. Internal Revenue Service, which is eligible to receive tax-deductible donations.

MAC ART COLLECTION St. Louis Landmarks Celebrated Through Art

The Missouri Athletic Club is home to an extensive art collection, with numerous framed artworks that have been displayed in the Downtown Clubhouse for decades. The MAC’s collection traces back to the early 1900s, as the Club acquired its first oil painting, Tom Barnett’s Windswept Meramec River in 1918. Several pieces on display at the MAC feature iconic St. Louis landmarks, offering a unique viewpoint of the city’s rich history.

Among the Club’s vast collection of art is Frank Nuderscher’s Eads Bridge and Riverfront, commissioned by the MAC in 1954. Currently displayed in the vestibule of the west entrance of the Downtown Clubhouse, this oil painting prominently features the iconic Eads Bridge over the Mississippi River. The perspective of this painting is from the Illinois side of the riverfront. Looking closely, the edifice of the Downtown Clubhouse can be seen on

the right side of the piece – a fun addition for MAC members to enjoy when passing by.

Frank Nuderscher was a well-known St. Louis artist who served as the Dean of the Washington University School of Fine Arts. Several of his paintings hang in the Downtown Clubhouse.

Keep an eye out for more MAC Art Collection features in future Cherry Diamond issues!

LOVE, LEGACY, AND THE

MAC:

The Gilkerson Wedding Story

The Gilkerson family’s special connection to the Missouri Athletic Club carries on. More than 33 years after Ed and Sheila Gilkerson celebrated their wedding reception in the Missouri Room on Oct. 26, 1991, their son Andrew and his wife Melanie hosted their own reception in the same ballroom on Feb. 22, 2025. Like his parents, Andrew and Melanie were married at the Old Cathedral –Basilica of St. Louis, King of France – continuing a cherished family tradition.

The MAC has played a meaningful role in Andrew and Melanie’s relationship from the start. As high school students, they worked side by side as lifeguards at the West Clubhouse pool.

The family’s connection to the MAC spans generations. Ed served on the Board of Governors from 2008 to 2011 and has been a member for more than 24 years. Sheila’s father was also a longtime member, and she fondly recalls attending many Club events before her own wedding. All four of Ed and Sheila’s children – Matt, Andrew, Claire and Danny – spent their high school years working at the West Clubhouse. Matt’s rehearsal dinner was held at the Club in December 2023, and Claire’s wedding reception is set for December 2025, once again in the Missouri Room.

Thursday, Aug. 14 F 5:30 p.m. F Downtown Clubhouse

Thursday, Sept. 11 F 5:30 p.m. F West Clubhouse

On August 14, Marie Salter will lead the Book Club’s discussion of a Missouri-set novel “All the Colors of the Dark” by Chris Whitaker.

The year is 1975. The Vietnam War is ending, Muhammad Ali is fighting Joe Frazier, and in the small town of Monta Clare, Missouri, girls are disappearing. When the daughter of a wealthy family is targeted, an unlikely hero named Patch steps in—changing the course of many lives. What unfolds is part mystery, part love story, and entirely unforgettable, as Whitaker examines what can be found in both the shadows of obsession and the blinding light of hope.

Missouri remains the setting of the Book Club’s next novel on Sept. 11, as John Hoehn guides discussion on “James” by Percival Everett, examining the story of “Huckleberry Finn” through Jim’s eyes. Winner of several accolades, including the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, the National Book Award, a New York Times Bestseller, and named Best Book of the Year by numerous publications, “James” promises to be a fascinating odyssey.

When Jim learns he is to be sold to a man in New Orleans and separated from his wife and daughter forever, he runs away until he can formulate a plan. Meanwhile, Huck has faked his own death to escape his violent father. As all readers of American literature know, thus begins the dangerous and transcendent journey by raft down the Mississippi River toward the elusive and unreliable promise of the Free States and beyond.

Brimming with the electrifying humor and lacerating observations that have made Everett a literary icon, this brilliant and tender novel radically illuminates Jim’s agency, intelligence, and compassion as never before.

Please make reservations through the MAC app or by contacting Dr. Genie McKee, Book Club Chair, at evmckee@gmail.com.

A NEW ERA OF EXCELLENCE

Missouri Athletic Club Expands to Clayton

The Missouri Athletic Club deepens its 120-year legacy with a third clubhouse created to complement the way members live, work, and connect today.

The MAC has always been a Club that moves with purpose. Whether it’s elevating the athletic experience, curating top-tier dining, or bringing members together through lasting traditions, each move forward reflects the priorities and passions of the membership.

In early 2026, the Missouri Athletic Club will officially open its third clubhouse at the Pierre Laclede Center in Clayton. Nearly 600 current MAC members have already opted into the new location on the 14th and 15th floors of the East Tower, with an enhanced fitness offering planned for the 13th floor.

Your Third Clubhouse — Made for You

The vision for the MAC Clayton Clubhouse started with the collective voice of the members.

As conversations about expansion began to surface, Club leadership sought direct member input through surveys, focus groups, and a final vote. The feedback was clear: Clayton is where members live, work, and want to connect more often. From there, momentum built quickly.

The result is a space designed for modern professionals and families alike offering flexibility, luxury, and convenience without compromise. The MAC Clayton Clubhouse will seamlessly complement members’ lifestyles. Members can look forward to elevated dining, modern coworking and meeting spaces, a full bar, and versatile event areas. Additionally, plans for a possible cigar lounge and adjacent member wine cellar are ongoing.

“It allows us to expand our reach and deliver greater value to our current membership while welcoming new members into the fold,” Donald “Chip” Misch, CCM, General Manager and Chief Operating Officer of the MAC said.

A Dream Team for a Dynamic Future

As the vision for the MAC Clayton Clubhouse takes shape, the Club proudly welcomes the first two leaders who will bring it to life: Greg Gerber, Director of Operations, and Morgan Smith, Membership Manager.

Gerber, a St. Louis native and graduate of Washington University, brings more than 25 years of hospitality and restaurant management experience to the role, including leadership positions at Racquet Club Ladue, Saint Louis Club, and Casa Don Alfonso at The Ritz-Carlton.

“Clayton has always felt like the heart of St. Louis to me,” Gerber said. “I’ve had the opportunity to work with three incredible organizations, all within a few blocks of each other. I’m honored to help shape what the MAC Clayton Clubhouse will become.”

Smith joined the MAC team in May and has already become a familiar face to many members. With an MBA from Lindenwood University and a professional background in relationship management, she’s passionate about connecting people and growing the MAC.

“Getting to know our members over the past two months has been a highlight of my professional career,” Smith said. “I’m excited to continue growing the Club’s community at the new MAC Clayton Clubhouse.”

The Club has also engaged Kopplin Kuebler & Wallace, the private club industry’s leading executive search firm, to recruit MAC Clayton’s Executive Chef. The person hired for this position will help define the culinary vision of the new space and make the MAC Clayton Clubhouse a dining destination.

Learn more about the latest additions to the team and further details about the plans for the MAC Clayton Clubhouse on the latest episode of the Missouri Athletic Club Connections podcast. Scan the QR code for the full episode.

WITH YOUR

CLUB Connecting

The Communications Department recently conducted a survey to gain insight into how members prefer receiving Club news and to help shape new initiatives. Feedback is essential in ensuring that members stay connected with what is happening at the Club.

Over the next several months, the Cherry Diamond will highlight enhancements being made throughout the Club’s communication outlets. This month, the focus is on improvements to the MAC app. In the past year, following the launch of the new app, there have been 4,633 downloads, showing a high level of engagement among members. Continuous improvements to the app will focus on enhancing ease of use and accessibility.

Key Insights and Changes Based on Member Feedback

The following changes have been made in response to direct feedback:

SIMPLIFYING THE APP EXPERIENCE

One of the most common suggestions received was for clearer navigation in the MAC app. As a result, the term "open" has been replaced with "door access" on the app homepage, making it easier to unlock the doors to the West Clubhouse. This simple update improves the app’s functionality, making it more intuitive for members.

INTRODUCING DEEP LINKING IN CLUB E-NEWSLETTERS

As part of ongoing improvements, the deep linking feature is now available. This technology enables direct navigation to specific content within the app, streamlining the process for members to find exactly what they need — whether it’s event registration, dining reservations, or booking amenities. You will see the links in the Club’s e-newsletters which will make reservations through the app more accessible. In addition, an upcoming chatbot feature will serve as a personal concierge, offering instant responses to questions and helping members navigate the Club’s services. The chatbot will guide members precisely where they need to go, making the experience more seamless and efficient.

Thank you for sharing your feedback. Ongoing efforts will ensure that the experience at the Club continues to meet the needs of members, providing the tools and information necessary to fully enjoy all that the MAC has to offer.

Real Food First

NOTES FROM MAC NUTRITION INTERN MIA MOORE

As attention rises to the importance of protein in our diets, consider taking a step back from the shaker bottle. As a Kinesiology and nutrition student as well as a student athlete, I understand prioritizing protein firsthand. However, it is always best to aim to reach our goals through our food first before relying on supplements.

Our body absorbs less calories when our protein is less processed. In fact, more calories are burned by digesting natural protein. This process is called the Thermal Effect of Food, in which the body uses more energy to digest whole foods than a shake, or processed protein, staving off hunger between meals. For those following a plant-based diet, pair complementary proteins (rice, beans, green beans, almonds, etc.) to ensure all the essential amino acids are included.

Supplements are a great convenient tool when used in moderation. Always opt for a cold pressed protein powder to maximize all the nutrients. This protects the amino acids, which are the building blocks of proteins. Another convenient way to get real animal protein is in beef sticks like Chomps or 1st Phorm Protein Sticks.

VITAMINS IN REAL FOOD

Supplements can add up quickly, but many essential vitamins are easily found in whole foods. For example, sweet potatoes are a great source of vitamin A. Egg yolks provide vitamin D, while nuts and seeds are rich in vitamin E. Leafy green vegetables are packed

with vitamin K. Just be sure to pair them with a bit of healthy fat to maximize absorption.

Water-soluble vitamins are also easily absorbed into the bloodstream, especially when consumed in the recommended daily amounts. Vitamin B6 is found in nuts. Seafood and poultry are excellent sources of B12. Citrus fruits provide plenty of vitamin C, and whole grains are rich in folate.

All of these nutrients are available through a balanced, colorful diet without the need for pills. Eating a variety of whole foods from every food group not only meets your vitamin needs but also helps stabilize your energy throughout the day.

REALISTIC RECIPE SUGGESTIONS

As someone with long days of early classes to late practices, fitting in balanced meals can be a challenge. Here are some of my favorite ways to make sure I stay energized while fitting in whole foods:

F Breakfast: Vanilla Greek yogurt (3/4 cup, zero added sugar), chopped strawberries, 1 oz. pumpkin seeds

F Lunch: Grilled chicken tenders (1-2), 1 serving size of Caesar salad.

o Tip: Customize your salad with added vegetables, a mix of 1/2 spinach 1/2 romaine, and only 1 Tspb. of dressing.

F Dinner: 1/2 zucchini, 1/2 squash, and 6 shrimp grilled in a pan, seasoning of choice (low sodium), ½ cup of rice, 1-2 Tbsp. mango salsa on top.

INTERN INSIGHTS

F Consuming most of your carbohydrate and natural sugar intake in the morning will help maintain energy (i.e. bananas and apples).

F Fruit is the best option for a quick snack. Eating every few hours also helps maintain energy levels while avoiding blood sugar crashes.

F Drink a lot of water to flush excess sodium out of your body.

F Everyone’s fitness goals are different and change with age – do what makes you feel strongest!

The Power of the Cold:

BENEFITS AND PROTOCOLS FOR COLD PLUNGE THERAPY

Cold plunge therapy has arrived at the MAC! Commonly referred to as ice baths or cold-water immersion, cold plunges are making waves in the world of wellness and athletic recovery.

COLD TUB GUIDELINES AND BENEFITS

Who can use the cold tub?

F Must be 18 years or older

F Shower required before entering

What to wear

F Bathing suits or quick-dry materials only

F No cotton, as it holds moisture and cools the body too quickly

F How to use the cold tub

F Start slow: Begin with 30-40 second sessions to allow your body to adjust

F Build-up: Aim for two to three minutes per session once accustomed

F Listen to your body: Exit immediately if you feel discomfort

F Focus on slow, controlled breathing to stay calm and enhance benefits

After the plunge

F Pat dry gently with a towel and change into warm, dry clothing

F Move lightly (walk or stretch) to gradually raise body temperature

F Avoid immediate heat exposure (hot shower or steam room)

Benefits of cold plunging

F Faster muscle recovery – reduces inflammation

F Immune boost – stimulates white blood cell production

F Mental clarity – endorphin release and stress reduction

F Natural energy boost – no stimulants required

Suggested frequency

F Beginners: Two to three times per week

F Intermediate/Advanced: Four to six times per week, depending on recovery needs

Note: If muscle growth is your primary goal, consider spacing cold plunges at least four to six hours after strength training to avoid interfering with hypertrophic signaling.

While cold plunges offer great benefits, they aren’t for everyone. Consult your doctor before starting cold exposure if you have the following:

F Cardiovascular conditions

F High blood pressure

F Raynaud’s disease

F Circulatory or nerve disorders

F Pregnancy

Cold plunge therapy can be a gamechanger for physical recovery, mental sharpness, and overall well-being when done safely and consistently. For more information on whether cold plunge therapy is right for you, speak with MAC Fitness personnel at either Clubhouse.

YOUTH PROGRAMS

MAC Swim & Dive Makes Waves in 2025 Season

For the MAC Swim and Dive team, the 2025 season is one that won’t soon be forgotten. On Saturday, July 12, the MAC Penguins and Puffins brought home a Conference win – Head Coach Lauren Fonseca’s first in her 20-year career with the Club.

“It’s hard to put into words what it means,” expressed Fonseca. “It’s the result of years of hard work, all while keeping the focus on fun.” The joy among the swimmers and divers is apparent to all who attend their meets throughout the season. Combined with each swimmers’ dedication to the team, this made for the perfect foundation heading into Conference.

On Friday, July 11, MAC spirit was on full display on the first day of Conference. Teammates cheered each other on at both ends of the pool, waving posters and yelling words of encouragement.

“At one point, an official asked how long they could keep it up – but the energy lasted all night,” recalls Fonseca. With the team already in a great position to win before relays on Saturday, reality began to set in – the MAC would reign victorious, taking home a Conference win.

Fonseca is grateful for the commitment, support, and trust she received from swimmers and parents throughout the season. Her gratitude also extends to those who waited out the waitlist and altered their summer plans to make it to the pool. “Your commitment truly made a difference – and helped make my dream of winning Conference a reality.”

“It’s hard to put into words what it means,” expressed Fonseca. “It’s the result of years of hard work, all while keeping the focus on fun.”

In thinking ahead to the future of MAC Swim and Dive, Fonseca hopes to host Conference at West and win at their home pool. In the short term, she’s committed to setting the team up for success.

At the core of the MAC Swim and Dive team’s success is its tight-knit community. MAC Swim and Dive offers kids the chance to enhance their skills in the water while also forming lifelong friendships. “MAC isn’t just a swim team, it’s a summer family,” says assistant coach Tommy Reh. “We come from different schools and sports, but every June we’re back together making memories that last way beyond the pool deck.”

In reflecting on the 2025 season, the words “excited,” “fun” and “great” were shared among several swimmers. One parent stated, “I don’t even swim and I’m excited!” For former MAC swimmers who have now become parents, watching from the sidelines offers a whole new perspective.

“There’s something special about watching my daughters swim on the same team I did as a kid,” says Katie Bahn Bodine. “It’s just like when we swam –having fun, being competitive, and making summer friends.”

Mary Helmsing Hoff, a former coach whose daughters now compete on the team, says, “It’s pretty exciting to share the fun.” Her daughter, Bridget, coached and swam this year, while her daughter, Izzy, swam and won an event. Kathleen Jaeger, a former Cool Dell swimmer and a current MAC parent, says her friendships with former teammates are even stronger now as they get to watch their children compete. “It’s not about the ribbons or the wins – it’s about building character and friendships.”

Penguins Swim Off with Honors at MAC Swim & Dive Banquet

On Monday, July 14, the MAC Swim and Dive athletes and their families filled the Downtown Clubhouse’s Missouri Room to celebrate their season at the team’s annual banquet. Families enjoyed dinner during the awards ceremony, followed by a dance party on the ballroom floor.

During the ceremony, seniors Ashley Blake, Libby Mooney, and Oscar Sorkin bid farewell to their teammates and thanked coaches for their guidance throughout their MAC Swim and Dive careers.

“It’s amazing to watch them commit to waking up early not just

to swim, but to be with friends and help with the Puffins,” says Fonseca about the graduating seniors. “Even if they don’t consider swimming their main sport, the littles see them as idols.”

No one went home empty handed – while trophies, medals, and certificates were presented to award winners, each team member was given a commemorative Ring Pop to celebrate their hard work.

Congratulations to the MAC Swim and Dive team for an exceptional season!
