LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT appy New Year! We now begin the next 120 years at the Missouri Athletic Club! We will have other celebrations to honor our long history soon (125?), but 2023 was a memorable year for our Club in many respects. Last year’s major event (and accomplishment) was the general manager leadership transition, which continues to progress very well. Recently, I was at another club and overheard members there talking about our MAC: “Have you seen the MAC recently? It looks great.” I was very proud to hear this. Of course, I have received a number of complimentary notes from our members, too, who have expressed their excitement about the trajectory of our Club and our new GM/COO, Chip Misch. Last month, I wrote about Chip and his team’s summit this past fall to find out “what better looks like” at the Missouri Athletic Club. Daily, I see something around the Clubhouses that looks better; based on comments I have heard from other members, I am not alone in my observations. Both Clubhouses have never looked better during the holiday season. To give a more specific example, I noticed yet another new enhancement at our Club on the day I submitted this article for publication. I include this picture of the Lucas Street elevator at the Downtown Clubhouse because I think this is a good metaphor for what the Board and management have continued to press: elevate everything at our Club for the benefit of members, to continue toward meeting our Vision “[t]o be the foremost private club in St. Louis known for attracting exceptional people and enriching lives for generations.” Bottom line: Our Club is in a very good place and has a solid foundation, and we should keep striving daily to make it better. Last month, I was very honored to attend the Past Presidents’ Dinner. Celebrating the holiday season with so many past Club leaders was so great. The degree of connection between Past Presidents and their continuing love of our Club is remarkable. It connects the Club through generations.

H

4 F CHERRY DIAMOND

I want to sincerely thank our exceptional staff, who worked tirelessly during the (very) busy recent holiday season and ensured all the events were outstanding for our members. We would not be able to do what we do without our great employees, and we must always keep that in mind. Also, thanks to all our members for contributing to the Employee Holiday Fund this year. It was a privilege for me to participate in handing out the holiday bonuses to our employees at both Clubhouses. I can tell you that our employees really appreciate this gesture of thanks from members. Thanks also to Santa Claus for his multiple appearances at Club events throughout the season! Our Board also recently again had the privilege of serving our employees holiday lunches at both Clubhouses for both the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. This, too, is a tremendous and unique MAC tradition. Looking ahead, the annual MAC Hermann Trophy Awards will be held on January 5, 2024, at the Downtown Clubhouse. Make plans to attend this great event. On January 24, 2024, our Nominating Committee will hold another orientation event for future Club leaders at the West Clubhouse, newly renamed: “Your MAC.” It will be a well-organized event, as we hope to cultivate our future leaders. Again, if you are interested in running for the Board of Governors or getting more involved in Board committee service, please reach out to me, any current Governor, or any Past President or Governor. Past President Angie Minges is the Chair of the Nominating Committee; Past President Brent Beumer is the Vice Chair. There will be an election at the MAC on May 2, 2024! Looking further ahead, the next Speakers Series event, Politics and Policy: A Senator’s Perspective, will be held on February 1, 2024, and it should be a great one. Former U.S. Senators Roy Blunt and Claire McCaskill will discuss State and National politics and policy. Finally, as we celebrate our long athletics tradition this month in the Cherry Diamond, I would like to add my congratulations to the entire athletic department for their accomplishments and service. Let’s keep it rolling.

Neal F. Perryman, President Missouri Athletic Club

LETTER FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER

E

ach new year brings much optimism and enthusiasm and the management team and I are planning for an impactful year for the MAC! The holidays were as active as they have ever been, and it was wonderful to see so many families enjoying all that the MAC offers in the month of December. In my short time with the MAC, I am continually drawn to the many incredible influences that define our position as an athletic club! The offerings at the Downtown and West Clubhouses are impressive and the opportunities — unlimited! A look back to the MAC’s early days, excerpts from our archives note, “With a prestigious athletic staff as its foundation and building on the 1904 Olympics, the MAC became a strong member of the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU). Club athletes won Olympic medals and national AAU

events over the following decades.” The careful planning and notable rise in the positioning of the Club is undeniable! To celebrate the Missouri Athletic Club’s past and our promising future, this issue of the Cherry Diamond features our athletics department, with future publications expanding on all we offer. Congratulations to our Athletic Director Jeff Tuhro and his prestigious team for their efforts! Happy New Year to all — 2024 is certain to be a year of progress at the Missouri Athletic Club!

MAC Featured Artist: Mark Hurd The MAC Art Society Featured Artist through January 2024 is graphic artist Mark Hurd. Hurd utilizes a creative technique with his own photography, digitally drawing, coloring and layering individual shapes together to create compositions that almost have the appearance of a silk screen or Japanese woodblock print. His work includes 22 years as a designer and art director at May Company, Famous Barr and Macy’s. Hurd began creating his unique works of art in 2004 and founded his company Dancing Moon Graphics in 2008. He is drawn to bright, vivid colors and contrast. Having made the move to digital art and computer graphics early in his artistic development, he has had the ability to create abstractly, with a heavy contrast of light, dark and saturated color. Among his major influences are Vincent Van Gogh, Edward Hopper and Bill Kohn – his painting professor at Washington University whose work is dominated by abstract planes of intense contrast and dazzling hues. Each of Hurd’s prints are signed and numbered, with a limited run of each size. His fine art prints are on display and for sale at both Clubhouses through the end of January. Be sure to browse his collection when you visit the MAC!

MAC ATHLETICS

Building Programs and Creating a Legacy The Missouri Athletic Club is an icon for shaping amateur athletics in the St. Louis community. Its origins are intertwined with the 1904 Olympics, marking the beginning of a remarkable legacy. Initially rooted in boxing, wrestling, basketball and swimming, the Club’s early athletics programming set the stage for its enduring prominence.

16 F CHERRY DIAMOND

Today, the Club thrives with a diverse range of athletics, including racquet sports, youth activities, and fitness and wellness, demonstrating a dedication to fostering a dynamic community of athletes. Over a century later, the MAC remains a vital hub for athletics in St. Louis. RACQUET SPORTS: A SMASH HIT In 1995, the MAC took a bold step by acquiring the Town and Country Racquet Club, transforming it into the dynamic West Clubhouse. This move further propelled the Club into the racquet sports arena, offering programs like Tennis, Squash, Pickleball and Racquetball. Members now enjoy personalized lessons, friendly games, leagues and thrilling tournaments. “Our racquet sports are a testament to the MAC’s commitment to excellence,” Jeff Tuhro, MAC Athletic Director, highlights. “All our racquet sports are growing, especially on the junior side. These programs are an important athletic offering for our members and their families.” Under the leadership of Tennis Director Scott Stutz, tennis has become accessible for social and competitive players. Conner Stevenson, Director of Junior Tennis, and his team have led the Club’s junior program to produce top-ranked athletes in St. Louis and beyond. Squash Director Alex Ingham leverages his professional experience to host world-class tournaments as part of the Professional Squash Association tour, and David Fuhrig continues to grow the Club’s pickleball and racquetball programs. YOUTH ACTIVITIES: NURTURING TOMORROW’S CHAMPIONS The MAC’s commitment to youth development has grown exponentially, offering year-round programming such as summer and holiday camps, specialty programs, sports-specific camps, clinics and teams, childcare services, and educational opportunities. These diverse initiatives cater to varying interests and skill levels, creating an environment where young members thrive. Programs Manager Joy Holdmeier and her team continuously bring creative ideas to fruition for young members to enjoy. “Our youth programming has exploded in recent years at the Club, as Joy and her team continue to offer more ways to get the younger generation involved. These programs help them form lasting memories at the MAC, ensuring the legacy continues as they are our future members,” Tuhro adds. FITNESS/WELLNESS: A HOLISTIC JOURNEY TO WELL-BEING Functioning as a one-stop shop for fitness and wellness, the MAC tailors its offerings to individual needs. This collaborative approach connects personal training, physical therapy, massage therapy and nutrition coaching, ensuring a comprehensive wellness experience. Group exercise classes foster camaraderie and the ever-expanding offerings at both

Clubhouses support members in reaching their objectives. Paul Helfrich and Courtney Hutt, MAC Fitness Managers, lead the fitness and wellness offerings, making the MAC the go-to place for top-of-the-line amenities. Helfrich and Hutt cater to all members, whether veterans or novices, ensuring they find the right MAC fitness and wellness program. Tuhro expresses gratitude, “I have to thank all those who pushed for and supported the fitness renovations at both Clubhouses. This helped propel the Club to become a leader in fitness and wellness, allowing us to expand our offerings. We must continue striving to be at the forefront of a continuously changing fitness industry.” BASKETBALL: WHERE TRADITION PLAYS ON “Our basketball community is a testament to the enduring spirit of the MAC,” Tuhro reflects. Basketball at the MAC is more than a tradition; it is an open invitation for members to join a community dating back to the winter of 1903 at the Club. From pick-up games and organized year-round leagues to clinics, private lessons, and traveling teams competing nationally, the court is yours when you are an MAC member. In the words of George Bernard Shaw, “We don’t stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.” At the MAC, the court is not just a space for basketball but a fountain of youth where members stay young by continuing to play in a dynamic and welcoming athletic community. Basketball leagues thrive under the leadership of Rick Schneider and Scott Mattingly who have helped organize and grow this important tradition at the MAC. The leagues welcome players of all levels, inviting recreational players and those with Division I experience to join in the action, making it an inclusive and engaging experience for all.

As the legacy continues, the MAC stands as a Club and a living testament to the power of community and sport. It is the members’ destination for all things athletic! F Discover premium athletic gear and exclusive MAC merchandise at both Clubhouses’ Pro Shops. From fitness essentials to stylish apparel, Member Service Manager Maria Graf always ensures your visit is exceptional! JANUARY 2024 F 17

Happy New Year

FROM COACH MAGGIE! As we enter the new year, let’s focus on new beginnings. Whether you’re just starting your fitness journey or looking to maintain your routine, let’s refocus and set new goals. PLAN AHEAD Start thinking about what you want your weight loss goals to look like in one month or six months from now. Look ahead to upcoming events or vacations and form solutions to overcome these obstacles before they arrive. GET BACK TO THE BASICS 1. Weigh all proteins according to your plan 2. Drink 80 oz of water 3. Eat every few hours. Grab some fruit, veggies, low-fat Greek yogurt, low sodium cottage cheese, a hard-boiled egg, or a wheat carb balance wrap with natural peanut butter. This will keep you from overeating and help stabilize your blood sugar. 4. Include good fats every day in moderation, such as grass-fed butter, olive oil, avocados, natural peanut butter or nuts. 5. Keep a food diary to track what you eat. 6. Keep your recipes simple; less is sometimes better. Make sure they are “Maggie Approved.”

7. Treat weekends like a Monday. If you eat clean all week and stop on the weekends, it will take you all week to get back to where you were. If you treat yourself, keep it to one meal or one snack in moderation. 8. Stay positive and stay focused. Only use your scale as a tool to see how your body responds to the food you eat each day. 9. When you feel your body wanting sugar, eat fruit instead of sweets. Keep your fruit intake to 2-3 per day. When making a smoothie or protein shake with fruit, do not use more than a ½ c per serving. 10. If you want to increase your fitness, add strength training. Far too many people believe that the only way to lose weight is to spend hours on the treadmill. A combination of regular cardio and strength training is the method that will bring sustainable results. If you are not sure how to get started, sign up with a personal trainer to guide you every step of the way. SET REALISTIC GOALS 1. Aim to lose 1½ to 2lbs a week (unless you are on special accelerated menus). 2. Cut the amount of soda you consume in half each day.

22 F CHERRY DIAMOND

3. Don’t cut out favorite foods, fit them in once or twice a month. 4. Make small changes each day, not all at once. 5. Try adding in new healthy foods each week. MAKE A PROS AND CONS LIST Write down what you find to be both easy and challenging and work through each one. DO NOT BEAT YOURSELF UP Obsessing over the occasional slip-up won’t help you achieve your goal. Do the best you can each day and be patient. NEVER GIVE UP It can take up to 30 days for a new activity to become a habit and up to six months for it to become part of your lifestyle. Weight loss is a journey. If you just keep at it, I promise, you will get to your goal!
