Missoula’s oldest footrace is back for its 46th year! Join us as we raise money for Y programs while winding through scenic downtown Missoula and the beautiful University of Montana campus. With four race options, the Riverbank Run offers something for everyone! Enter in the 1-Mile Fun Run, 5K, 10K, or run all three in our signature event, the Trifecta.

SCHOOL AGE CARE MISSOULA Y AFTER SCHOOL CLUB: (Grades K–5) The Missoula Y After School Club is a fun, structured, healthy place for kids in grades K–5 to spend their afternoons. Children are divided into groups based on school location, and transported to one of our after school sites.

Children receive healthy snacks, at least 30 minutes of daily aerobic activity, homework help, caring attention from responsible counselors, and a calendar of fun activities.

Children may be registered at any time throughout the school year on a first-come, firstserved basis. Financial assistance is available to qualifying families. Preregistration is required.

SCHOOL’S OUT DAY CAMP: (Grades K–5) No school? No problem! School’s Out Day Camp is loaded with fun activities in and out the Y. Groups are divided by age and led by counselors. Children should bring swimsuits, towels, and lunches. Drop off is at the Missoula Y from 7:30–9:00 a.m. and pickup is at the Y from 4:30–6:00 p.m.

Registration required. Beginning January 1, 2018, School’s Out Day Camp registration must be made at least two weeks prior to the day of camp in order to receive regular pricing. Registrations made fewer than two weeks before the day of camp will be considered late registrations. Registration fees are non-refundable once late registration begins.

Active 6 after school programs are available at three middle schools and the Missoula Y. Programming at schools is open to sixth graders attending that school and Missoula Y programming is open to all Active 6 participants. Each new swimmer receives a $25 discount off the first month’s fees and a 30day trial period to swim with their age group before completing the required USA swimming registration. Monthly trials start at the beginning of each month and end on the last scheduled practice day of each month.

Every Gift Makes A Difference A donation to the Y is a gift to our community. The Annual Support Campaign is a community-drive campaign that allows everyone in the greater Missoula area the opportunity to participate in Y programs and membership, regardless of financial background. This year, the campaign strives to raise $300,000 to support the Y’s work.

Your donation helps us ensure that not only is no one turned away, but that we are able to meet the needs of our community, whether that be offering healthy spaces for those who have been displaced during a horrific fire season, teaching every Missoula third graders life-saving swim skills, or providing free memberships to sixth graders.

MEET HANNA! Meet the Missoula Y Nutrition Coordinator, Hanna Real! Hanna oversees the Y’s food program. Access to healthy food options is an important part of a healthy lifestyle.

Using Y HEPA (Healthy Eating and Physical Activity) guidelines, Hanna and the Y’s food program provide healthy meals and snacks to children in our after school program, two preschools, and summer camps.

Hanna is passionate about healthy, affordable meals that families can enjoy together. Try two of her favorite winter recipes with your family!

Easy Kale Chips This recipe is a favorite among our 2017 Camp Imagination campers!

INGREDIENTS 1 Bunch of kale leaves Spray Olive Oil (or about 1 tablespoon oil) Salt/pepper or your favorite seasoning

Preheat your oven (or a toaster oven!) to 300°F. Wash kale leaves and dry completely. Any moisture will make turn the kale chips soggy.

Remove the thick stems and large ribs. Chop or tear leaves into similarly sized pieces.

Arrange kale pieces on a baking sheet (may need more than one sheet) and mist with 3-5 sprays oil. Rub pieces on the baking sheet to coat the pieces with the sprayed oil.

Make sure the kale is spaced out and not overlapping.

Sprinkle the kale with salt, pepper, or any other seasonings you prefer.

Bake at 300°F for 10 minutes. Rotate the pan and bake an additional 12-15 minutes until the kale starts to firm up. Remove the pan from the oven and let cool for a few minutes before enjoying!

HEALTHY STARTS Lightly Curried Butternut Squash Soup (Serves 4) This recipe comes from Leanne Brown’s cookbook, Good and Cheap. Good and Cheap helps families eat well on $4/day. Get a free electronic copy of Good and Cheap at www.leannebrown.com/cookbooks. Available in English and Spanish.

INGREDIENTS 1 butternut squash (or other winter squash) 1 Tbsp butter 1 medium onion diced 1 green bell pepper diced 3 cloves garlic finely chopped 1 tsp cumin powder 1 tsp coriander powder 1 tsp turmeric powder 1 tsp cayenne pepper (or less if you don’t like it spicy) 1 can coconut milk 3 cups water Salt and pepper to taste

1. To prepare the squash, peel off the tough skin with a potato peeler. Cut the squash in half lengthwise with a sharp chef’s knife, then scoop out the seeds and gloop.(You can save the seeds for a tasty snack later, if you like: just clean the gloop off, then toast them.)

2. Next, slice off the stem and very bottom of the squash and throw them away. Take each half of the squash and place it face-down on a cutting board. Chop each into 1/2” slices, then turn each slice into cubes.

3. Put a large pot or Dutch oven on the stove on medium heat. Melt the butter and let the pot get hot. Add the onion, pepper, and garlic, then sauté for two minutes.

4. Add the cubed squash and spices and stir it all together. Put a lid on the pot and let it cook for another two minutes. Add the coconut milk and water and stir.

5. Bring the soup to a boil, then turn down the heat to low and let it cook for about 30 minutes, or until the squash is tender.

6. Once the squash is tender, taste the soup and add salt and pepper as needed. Soup usually needs a fair bit of salt, so be generous.

7. If you have an immersion blender, you can purée the soup in the pot. If you have a normal blender, wait until the soup has cooled before transferring it to the blender.

Purée until smooth, then taste again and add any more salt and pepper it might need.

8. You can enjoy the soup as-is or serve it with another drizzle of coconut milk or a dollop of sour cream, plus some chopped scallions or cilantro.

Butternut squash is a great source of vitamin A. Winter squash can keep for about 3 months if stored correctly. Keep in a cool, dry place!
