Preliminary Film Evaluation


Evaluation !   Once your preliminary is completed, it is imperative that you complete a detailed evaluation of the planning, filming, editing and final product. !   The points on the next slide are a guide to help you and not questions to simply answer. !   Give as much detail and information as possible in your essay. !   Treat the examiner as if they know nothing and explain everything you did step by step and in great detail.


Video production – initial response !   What was your task? !   What were your initial ideas? !   what influences gave you these ideas? !   What type of short film did you set out to make? !   What style/genre were you hoping to work in? !   What challenges did you envisage?


Video production – professional practice !   1) How did you manage the group dynamics, equipment and resources, interim deadlines and the necessairy collaborative nature of film making? !   2) What health and safety and logistical problems did you solve? !   3) How did you organise your human resources – the people involved in the production? !   4) How did you manage actors, locations, costumes and props? Remember that deciding not to use a particular strategy (e.g. no props) is also a creative decision.


Video Production – professional practice !   5) How did storyboarding and creating a shooting script work in practice? Did you make creative decisions to depart from the original plan? For what reasons and with what outcomes? !   6) Although time management may seem a less exciting aspect of creative media practice, it is possibly the most important – how did you manage your time, and with what success?


Video production technology !   - You will have used digital cameras, microphones, lighting, and editing resources, some of these will have been closer to industry standard (final cut pro) than others (using a torch to light a scene) !   1) How did digital technology enable you to develop creatively and are there examples of the technology obstructing or preventing your creative flow?


Video production - audience !   1) How did you respond to the original brief with the audience in mind? !   2) How did your analysis and research into the type of film you selected impact on the creative process in pre production? !   3) In filming and editing, how did you ensure that the meaning would be apparent to the audience? What creative decisions did you make in planning, rehearsing, filming and editing that were influenced by your sense of the audience and possible layers of interpretation?


Video production- audience !   4) How did the audience respond when you trialed aspects of your film? Are there a variety of different possible interpretations of your sequence that will depend on the cultural situation of the viewer?


Video production Representation !   1) Who and what have you represented in your film? (people, places, themes, ideas, time periods) !   2) Who is included and excluded by the text you have created? !   3) What form of ‘realism’ have you constructed, and why? !   4) What role do the mise en scene, acting, dialogue, music and style of camera work play in the construction of versimilitiude?


Completed Preliminary film. !   1) Explain in great detail how you feel about your film, the things that worked well, the things that were challenging, the things you wished you could change redo and the things you are most proud of, always say why and give detail.
