Welcome to the 4th issue of JLT Dubai Toastmasters Club Newsletter and the 2nd generation of the Club’s Executive Committee. The Dubai summer season brought many delights to our Toastmaster’s attention. Watching the final speeches of the World Championships, I could not help but reflect how my Toastmasters journey might compare to the finalists’. Imagining the supportive environment of their respective home clubs, I fictitiously compared them to the JLT Club atmosphere, the contest education and mockup sessions, as well as our JLT mentors that set out on the journey alongside their mentee speakers to help everyone reach their destinations.

To the reader, our newsletter provides an idea of the people behind the Toastmasters title, what our guests say about us

and above all, about the Club's initiatives to remain effective in its mission to develop communication and leadership skills. Read on to get a glimpse of the values and perspectives that are represented within our Club.

A new Toastmaster year has just begun. In the past year, JLT Dubai Toastmasters Club has achieved the “President’s Distinguished Club”. We also earned prestigious district awards such as, “Best Newsletter”, “Best Article”, as well as the, “Best Social Media Presence”.

We shall continue the legacy of excellence this year too.

Excom will ensure that each and every member gets the opportunity to achieve the goals that they have set for themselves.

THEY JUMPED ON THE BAN TM Yusuf My name is Yusuf Bayraktaroglu.

I'm 37 years old and married with a 3 years old boy. I worked most of professional life in the energy industry. My family and I moved to Dubai at the end of 2017 due to my wife's job change and have been living in this beautiful city since then.

How long were you considering joining Toastmasters before you actually did?

After moving to Dubai, I was looking for opportunities to meet new people and gain new skills during the adaptation period. So it did not take much time (one week I guess) after I decided that JLT Toastmasters Club is the right one

for me.

Why did you decide to join JLT Toastmasters Club?

I had attended one meeting in another club before, to experience Toastmasters but I was looking for a club closer to my home. So I came up with JLT Toastmasters Club. My only regret is that I should have joined long before since the members are really nice and the atmosphere is amazing.

TM Celestine My name is Celestine Buchi, I am a 28 year old Nigerian working with one of the leading real estate companies in Dubai as a property consultant.

Usually parents can’t wait for their child to start talking, ironically my parents couldn’t wait for me to stop talking... One of the reasons why I joined Toastmasters Club is to hone my listening skills and become a better speaker.

I procrastinated for 5 months before finally deciding to attend a Toastmasters meeting, and I haven’t looked back after that meeting.

JLT Toastmasters was the first club I attended, and decided to become a member immediately after my first attendance. Apart from the warm welcome I received which is customary to every Toastmasters Club, it was the Table Topics that got me hooked. I was asked a question that revolutionized my idea about chasing my dreams.

The question was “without fear of public speaking, how would your life be different than it is now” .. that was the question, and it has been the force that pushes me each time I have the opportunity to give a speech.

NDWAGON TM Dhaval I am an explorer, love to see new places, meet different people and learn about their cultures. I love to play snooker and enjoy playing the piano.

How long were you considering joining Toastmasters before you actually did?

To join Toastmasters I didnt take me much time, once i had a jist of what Toastmasters is all about I swiftly joined the same.

Why did you decide to join JLT Toastmasters Club?

I wanted to learn to give good speeches, especially to develop a confident persona in me.

TM Jayasree I am an Electronics and Communication Engineer by Education and an IT Engineer by Profession. I was working in the Software Industry and banking domain for 9 years, travelling around different countries.

I found my inner calling during those years is about understanding human behaviors and that led me to becoming an NLP Coach now.

I am a Certified NLP Master Practitioner, heading towards NLP Master Coach. I always like to learn new things in the field of studying human behavior.

My vision is to empower people through my coaching and trainings

to find their true potential and to be more aware of themselves. I believe that, “If X can, then YOU can�.

In my free time, I enjoy sketching, writing Tamil poems, blogging - I have been maintaining my own blog for 10 years (Changes are Inevitable).

Meditation, Emotional Intelligence and mindfulness are part of me nowadays and I am working towards publishing my first book.

How long were you considering joining Toastmasters before you actually did?

I have been considering to join Toastmasters for 1.5 years by now,

when I found one of my passion and interest in public speaking.

Why did you decide to join JLT Toastmasters Club?

After coming to Dubai, I was searching for clubs nearby and found JLT Club as one among them.

I have attended few meetings here as guests - found this club has most friendly environment, and I get great response and help from the President TM Rehna Khalid upon all my queries.

By joining JLT TM Club, I am looking for continuous, consistent practice and support in all aspects of public speaking.

There are different types of questions you can choose from multiple choice, survey, and openended.

Under the configuration of each question, you can decide to make it anonymous so that the participant is not required to enter a name.

o Next Level For the last decade, advances in technology have paved the way for a more engaging and modernized presentation. While many of us grew up creating presentations with PowerPoint, sometimes you want to convey your ideas with a little more flair. Here are some important tools to capture audience attention.

1. Poll Everywhere

TM Midhun I was overwhelmed by the appreciation I received after my TMOD role at the club meeting.

Everyone was excited about the interactive tool I used to collect live responses from the audience - it was a simple way to engage the audience.

Imagine being able to interact with the audience in real time, and collect live responses to your questions with instant results.

Well, that’s what polleverywhere.com does. You can invite the audience to respond to a poll by visiting a website on their mobile phones. Responses appear in an animated graph.

2. Canva I am a big proponent of Canva. It can help you in buidling unique presentations. It is filled with simple ways to create visually stunning

presentations. The large collection of templates for presentations, posters, facebook posts, and flyers are amazing - try canva.com, thoroughly recommend it.

3. Adobe Spark Adobe Spark is an app that lets you create interesting and unique videos by easily combining video clips, photos, and icons. This presentation tool is perfect for making a video storytelling really stand out with a personal touch.

4. Free Stock Images I know your pain. You’re looking for the right images for your presentation that can convey your ideas. You’ve searched far and wide for stunning, free images to use. Here are some places you can always look for beautiful highresolution stock photography: unsplash.com, stocksnap.io, pixabay.com.

Consumers vs. Creators Pathways Level 1, Project 2, Speech 1 How many of you have interacted with a toddler? Have you observed a toddler listening to music? Have you noticed that if she likes the music, she will be doing something – either dancing, moving, singing aloud or just try to talk about it to others? For her entertainment is all about doing something with it.

That’s not necessarily true when they grow up. Growing up, they need to be constantly entertained or given something to enjoy. In fact, they are fed continuously – food is fed, entertainment is fed, thoughts are fed, dreams are fed, and most importantly even learning is fed.

Soon after infanthood, or even during infanthood nowadays, our children are used to being consumers.

Consumers of information, entertainment, thoughts, dreams, almost everything. As they grow, they demand more of it. Somehow, we as parents assume that our job is to feed our perennially hungry, bored children. Hence, we try to make things fun and interesting for them, run from TV to movies, toy stores, and entertainment zones to activity centers. Phew! The idea is to somehow keep the children entertained. Still, our Children often

complain of boredom – which I believe means that they want to be fed something else. Why is that we as parents today feel up-the-wire as soon as the children spell the word boring or holidays?

Parents feel guilty because they’re busy and things like 3 days super sale, shopping festivals pops up now and then. We mostly, end up giving kids what they want away, which leads to an inability to delay gratification.

Creation or Production of any kind requires complex and higher order thinking skills at multiple levels.

The result is a ‘mentally wealthy’ child for you!

The best part of the process is the amount of effort it takes to think, question, create, present, brings one more closer to one’s authentic self he was born with.

We know pretty well, all this doesn’t only apply to our children alone but to us adults as well. We need to walk the talk, practice then preach and lead by example.

So let me ask, how many us are willing to be closer to your authentic self of being creators?

EXPECTATIONS TOWARD Do Mentors and Mentees think differently?

What is the greatest favour a Mentor can do for a Mentee?

TM Sudhir Mentor A mentor should ideally underpromise and over deliver, mentor should understand the needs of a mentee and provide the assistance to break their inhibitions and point out their mentee's inherent strength, which was unsurfaced.

DTM Rizwan Mentor The greatest favour a mentor can do to the mentee is to "Tell them the truth" – even when it might hurt feelings of the mentee or might be difficult for him/her to hear. In simple words, don't tell them what they want to hear, rather tell them what they need to hear!

TM Neetu Mentee Greatest favour a mentor can do for a mentee is to connect with his thoughts, needs and feelings related to public speaking and with acknowledgment and empathy address those needs.

Mentor's personal experience and learning plays a huge role.

Mentor's openness to connect with mentee at his / her thinking space is an asset for mentorship.

What is the single most important task of a Mentor?

TM Mikel Mentee I believe the most important task of a mentor should be to find the right way of keeping the new comer on track of his/her development.

TM Nidhin Mentee Mentor shall be someone who can influence other's lives and love to uplift them to reach their goals.

A mentor is not someone who simply request you to follow the path which was successful for him. A mentor is someone who sees the talent and ability within you, more than you see in yourself, and helps bring it out of you in the best possible way you can.

DS MENTORSHIP What personality trait / characteristic is essential to be able to be a great Mentor?

TM Brahim Mentee A mentor should be at the same time selfish and selfless.

Let me explain: what I mean by selfish is interested. The mentor through mentorship is seeking to learn about the same subject he is trying to teach or transmit.

A mentor will also need to be selfless, in the sense of giving back. Mentorship is a form of volunteering where we take under our wings someone who was in the same shoes as we were once before.

TM Aliyu Mentee In my opinion, the ideal mentor is the one who is very empathetic to the mentee; help him/her to find out only the positive aspects of his/her strengths and support him/her to act only on it neglecting his/her weakness.

TM Midhun Mentee A mentor should be a constant challenger.

He should set high standards and expectations; "my mentor expected me to move so much faster and to achieve so much more than I ever had before.

At the time, I felt it was unfair. But, it's only as I look back that I realize I wouldn't be in my current role without it. I wouldn’t have been able to get through the difficulties I’ve been through if I had not had someone who cared and expected that much early in my career.”

What do you wish your Toastmaster Mentor had done for you when you started out?

TM Ashish Mentor I wished that my mentor had asked me about my purpose and what is my goal of joining Toastmasters and the areas where I would have liked to develop.

Mentor could have explained in more details about the path and journey of Toastmasters.

TM Radhika Mentor Mentor relationship has been extremely useful in reviewing project scripts and getting insights on how the scripts could be further improved.

EXPECTATIONS TOWARD Do Mentors and Mentees think differently?

How does a mentor motivate a mentee to reach for the stars?

TM Jayesh Mentor For a mentor first thing is to know the sensitivity level of his/her mentee. Sometimes it offends mentee when straightaway pointing out on his/her weak area. A mentor should first focus and communicate on areas of strength and mildly mention on points to improve. Then, based on ‘tolerance or acceptance levels’ of the mentee, one should elaborate on the weakness and guide and motivate the mentee on possible ways to improve.

TM Francis Mentee I motivate a mentee through building hope and belief in him/her self. To tell him/her that it's possible. To tell them nothing is fixed and nothing is unchanging and unchangeable, but it starts from the inside out. To truly change from the inside is to make our thoughts and feelings aligned with our idealized self so that nothing outside of us can change our state of being. To change then is to be greater than what the environment tells us.

What should a mentor avoid?

TM Shagufta Mentor A mentor should avoid advising the mentee to follow what he feels is the right way.

Rather a mentor should understand the roadmap set by the mentee, his specific interests & challenges, and support him achieve those.

TM Sayndippta Mentee As per me an effective mentor should not act on behalf of the mentee but should endeavour to empower him to take his own approach. He should trust and guide his mentee to work out things for themselves.

TM Mark Mentee First the mentor should know which star his mentee is looking for. Once the target is clear, no outter motivation is needed.

DS MENTORSHIP Which act as a mentor do you think has the most impact on a mentee?

TM Rehna Mentor I believe mentor should be someone who just mould the mentee. By understanding mentees strength and aptitude.

Encourage mentee to reach high by finding out his/ her hidden potential. Mentor should come to mentees level and make rapport.

Mentor should avoid imposing his belief or way of thinking on mentee.

TM Ruchika Mentee I think positive reinforcement and regular communication.

For a leader, I would add leading by example, discipline and if we are going beyond actions, then subject matter expertise/knowledge and charisma, which includes ability to influence and managerial courage.

How does a mentor balance praise, advice and criticism correctly?

DTM Deepa Surendran Mentor For anybody, feedback is good and to be used to improve self, it doesn't matter whichever format the feedback is .... use it positively.

Same is true for mentor, too.

TM Hawabibi Mentee By seeking the opinion of the mentee on his or her own speech...then offering suggestions but leaving the option to the mentee, if he or she wants to take it. Again not too many suggestions...min 1 max 3.

Going beyond borders TM Ian Daniel Francis Member of MMMC Toastmasters Club in Malaysia June 1st, 2018

“Every experience, good or bad, is a priceless collector’s item” - Isaac Marion.

When it comes to JLT Dubai Toastmasters club for that matter, I can honestly say the experience was truly inspiring.

Without a doubt, many would ponder upon the circumstances of why I would attend a toastmasters meeting when I had clearly come to Dubai for a relaxing holiday.

However, as a toastmaster myself back in my home country, Malaysia, the desire to experience different toastmasters clubs around the world was very compelling. Since my arrival in Dubai, I attempted to sought out nearby toastmasters clubs within the vicinity of my residence and found the JLT toastmasters club through the official (Toastmasters International) TI website. Without hesitation, I rang them up to attend as guest for their meeting.

Its all about enthusiasm, passion, and humor with JLT Dubai Toastmasters club. A small crowd of members and guest, yet an ever so warm and friendly bunch. I truly appreciated the effort they took to make me feel so welcomed during my time at the meeting. They gave me an apt opportunity not only to introduce myself, but also to participate in the table topics

session, which I must say was the highlight of the whole meeting for me.

My parent club is MMMC Toastmasters club (District 102, Division A, Area A4) in Malaysia.

I have been a member there for almost 2 years now and have been a proactive member throughout. I had the opportunity to participate in the International Speech contest earlier this year and managed to secure the 2nd place in the Division A contest. Currently, I am very close to the completion of my Competent Communicator (CC) project manual with just one project left from the coveted CC title.

We chartered our club on 1 January 2016 with humble beginning but over a span of one year, MMMC toastmasters club made its name not only in Division A but also in District 102. For the term, 2017-18, we achieved President Distinguished Club status with a perfect score of DCP 10. Now in the current term, we have consecutively achieved the President Distinguished Club status with a score of DCP 9.

While some may say they joined Toastmasters solely to improve

their public speaking skills, I believed that Toastmasters served as a platform for me to meet new people and improve my communication skills as well as social interaction with different people while also improving the speaking skills before an audience.

Joining the Toastmasters club, I would say, has been one of the best decisions I have made in my life. The experiences built me up, not just in the skill of speaking but also in character. It stresses on molding individuals with a sense of integrity, decorum and professionalism.

The JLT Dubai Toastmasters club has been a wonderful experience for me and I sincerely hope to attend their future meetings.

Ralph C. Smedley, Founder of Toastmasters once said, “share with others the benefits we have gained for ourselves”. With that said, I will continue my venture to other Toastmasters clubs around the world and share my experiences from different clubs in the hope of connecting members of Toastmasters around the world through common goal.

Interestingly we also have a fruit and a flower by that name. We have a perfume by that name. We also have a car by that name. There are songs and poems written on Passion.

Yet, Passion is not only sugar and spice and all things nice… it is also a barbaric butcher. It could make you loathe someone, seek sadistic revenge, get you perilously pungent for want of Power.

So, what is this thing we call Passion?

Ask a 25 year old and he or she will tell you that passion is the throes of love.

Ask a 50 year old and he or she will probably tell you that passion is the purpose that permeates their psyche.

Ask a 75 year old and they will tell you that passions are the dreams unfulfilled.

History is proof of many cunning passages and contrived corridors.

It speaks of terrible tyrants and devilish dictators. Men who have plagued mankind with countless numbers of genocides and enslavements, wars and destruction... from the Pharaohs of ancient Egypt to the Rulers of modern times… men who have left their mark in the most horrendous and ghastly ways.

What is it about passion that makes people go weak in their knees, or burn up a fire in their bellies or moan their hearts?

You could be passionate just about anything – your work, your vision, glorious food, travel, clothes, shoes, your spouse, a lover, your family, your home, your car, your own dear self….

Still I would call them purely passionate people… it is not because I condone the things that they did; not at all… but because they did it with such fortitude and fervour that nothing could stop them.

Passion then dear people is not just an emotion... It is Energy in Motion.

ON PASSION It is when you apply yourself with a force that no difficulty or adversity, danger or uncertainty can stop you from doing what you have set your mind to.

Passion is being ruthless, unyielding, demanding and uncompromising.

Much like the water that cuts through the rocks, not because it dislikes it... but only because it wants to make its own way.

Much like the Sun that burns through the desert, not because it enjoys creating the aridness... but because the deserts provide corridors for migratory birds which otherwise would perish passing through habited areas.

And at the same time it can also Someone asked me... so what are make you surrender... it makes you passionate about? you rejoice... it makes you surreal and hypnagogic.

I replied... I am passionate about being Preposterously Passionate.

Much like the Sufis who swirl to the melody and lose sense of the What then is your Passion?? world to unite to their source.

Much like the moon and the stars that grace the dusky nights.

Much like the smile of a baby and the coos and the gurgles that have you enthralled.

TMOD’s, Themes & Takeaways The highlight of any meeting besides the Project Speeches and Table Topics Sessions of course, is the Toastmaster of the Day. As Master of Ceremony, the TMOD with his choice of “Theme for the Day” adds a valued dimension to the proceedings of the meeting.

With newer perspectives and learning that is so carefully thought of and delivered, the TMOD and the Theme is no doubt an important aspect that is much looked forward to.

The diversity of the TMs’ backgrounds and proficiency levels in language, the grammar mistakes were diverse. However, certain errors are more frequent, which here we shall focus on. Improper use of articles, before subjects, where the rule of thumb is; if a word is countable e.g. one child, two spoons, an article must be used, even if there are adjectives before the noun. Never use “a” or “an” with a word that is plural e.g. dishes, cars, or uncountable e.g. soup. “a/an” are used when the object is generic, e.g. I stopped a taxi. “a” is used when we mention something for the first time, and then it is changed to “the” when it becomes clear which thing we are talking about.

Second frequent mistake, is the misuse of the propositions, as “to, at, in”, some of the errors noted was, e.g. I was moving to door, while the appropriate way is “I was moving toward the door”. Further, we noticed unnecessary attachment of “to” to verbs e.g. I was giving to him the key, while the appropriate way of saying it is “I was giving him the key".

I took about 80 or more videos and people start appreciating and digging deeper to further sharpen their tools. I recommend that members should re-watch it with their mentor and analyze the components to get the most out of it.

KNOCK, KNOCK The knock-knock joke is a question-andanswer joke, typically ending with a pun.

TM Celestine Knock-knock jokes are primarily seen as children’s jokes, though there are exceptions. A possible source of the joke is William Shakespeare’s Macbeth; first performed in 1606.

In Act 2, Scene 3 the porter is very hung-over from the previous night.

During his monologue he uses a variation of the joke as a refrain while he is speaking:

Knock, knock! Who’s there, I’ the name of Beelzebub? Here’s a farmer that hanged himself on the expectation of plenty: come in time; have napkins enow about you; here you’ll sweat for’t.

The scenario is of a person knocking on the front door to a house. The teller of the joke says, “Knock, knock!” the recipient responds, “Who’s there?” The teller gives a name (such as “Harry”) or a description (such as “Police”) or something that purports to be a name (such as “Needle”). The

other person then responds by asking the caller’s surname (“Harry who?” “Police who?” “Needle who?”), to which the joke-teller delivers a pun involving the name (“Harry up I’m starving?” “Police let me in—it’s cold out here!” “Needle little help with the groceries!”).

The formula of the joke must be followed strictly:

Knock, knock.

Who’s there?
