Hello and welcome to your October issue of The Mirfield Word.
Like the rest of the nation, at the moment, we are all in shock and mourning the loss of her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth. I don’t think any of us will ever forget where we was and what we was doing when the tragic news arrived.
Throughout this issue we have put together some features on the Queen and King Charles. I hope you will enjoy reading them as much as we enjoyed putting them together. Please note that we have sourced the correct licences and copyright on these features and would ask these are not copied or reproduced in anyway.
Due to this, we are sending a copy of this issue to the Palace for the attention of the king and I feel very proud to be representing Mirfield through your community magazine.
In other news, we are now on the run up to Christmas and our most popular issues of the year. We have lots to share with you including events and ideas on how to support local businesses at this difficult time. I think you will agree it is essential to support our local companies more then ever.
Prior to this, we have Halloween and it is always lovely to see the efforts people in Mirfield go to, to celebrate. Check out Haigh’s Farm Shop who have everything you need for a spook-taculer Halloween including delicious pork pies and parkin!
Following this we have bonfire night which always goes with a bang! The round table put together this family friendly event every year at the show ground and each time it gets bigger and better. Make sure you put a date in your diary for this.

If you die without a will, the government will distribute your assets and possessions, according to the rules of intestacy!
It’s important to make sure that after you die, your assets and possessions (known as your estate) will go to the people (known as your beneficiaries) you choose, such as family members and charities you want to support.
Your estate includes your personal possessions, as well as assets such as:
• Property (in the UK or overseas)
• Savings and investments
• Insurance funds
• Pension funds
If you die without a valid will, it could be difficult for your family to sort out your affairs. Your estate will be shared out according to the rules of intestacy. Under these rules, only married partners, civil partners, and certain close relatives can inherit your estate.
If you and your partner are not married or in a civil partnership, your partner won’t have the right to inherit – even if you’re living together.
Act now! Protect your assets and your loved ones before it’s too late.
Tom Ford’s reputation as a designer has landed him in the same ranks as Gianni Versace and Karl Lagerfeld, though the 60-year-old Texan’s view on the industry comes from a place of fear, not excitement.
“When I was young, I decided to build a vision in my mind which was very clear. It was basically this - have no fear,” he begins. “That’s a brave thing to do, particularly when you are starting out on a new project or looking for some sort of validation for your work or your ideas; but it’s what we have to do – all of us – if we’re to move away from the mundane.”
That he has done, and even stepped across into film-making as a successful side-project. “I’ve said it many timesdesigning women’s clothes is way harder than the film industry. Fashion is so perishable; you don’t have time to catch your breath;
but with films you can have a four- or fiveyear break and find you’re still relevant.”
If Ford is ever flustered, he never shows it. He and his husband, editor Richard Buckley, split their time between the UK and Los Angeles, with their son Jack in tow, and he balances his burgeoning empire with his other role as an artist. Over his 30-year career, Ford has become synonymous with a specific brand of effortless opulence. His suit is impeccably tailored, his shirt perfectly pressed. Even
When I’m at home, glamour has no part of my day to day.”
During the dashing designer’s 15-year tenure at Gucci – and Yves Saint Laurent, which the brand acquired in 1999 – Ford resurrected the Italian fashion house from near bankruptcy. His impeccable sensibilities, attention to detail and daring creative ingenuity helped turn Gucci into a billion-dollar business, until his departure in 2004. His success is based on both his deep understanding of fashion and his dedication to pushing its boundaries.
when he sports a beard, it is suspiciously thick, glossy and black… “I am not ready to be a silver daddy yet,” he confesses with a wry smile.
One might imagine that Ford constantly lives in this sartorial bubble, but he is quick to dispel that particular myth: “What you see is all an illusion. It’s an image. It doesn’t reflect real life, definitely not my real life.
The launch of his eponymous label – a billion-dollar luxury brand that encompasses men’s wear, women’s wear, beauty and a baffling array of perfumes and colognes – reinforces the designer’s sensibilities, even if he prefers to be behind the camera.
“I don’t like having my picture taken - I am extremely shy,” he laughs.
Tinnitus is the perception of sound when there is no external source (whistling, whooshing, buzzing etc), experienced persistently by 10% of the population. It’s not usually something to worry about, however you should consult a GP/audiologist if it lasts longer than five minutes AND is in one ear only; pulses with your heartbeat; causes insomnia/low mood.
So how do we cope with this new sound that follows us everywhere? I work with those who are distressed by their tinnitus, helping people to become ‘habituated’ to it. Habituation is the process by which we still have tinnitus but are no longer upset by it. 98% of people will habituate over time, and I teach people how to shortcut that process. Here are a couple of key points of my teaching:
Tinnitus doesn’t have ‘volume’, because it’s not a sound. Sound follows the laws of physics - it will be drowned out by a louder opposing sound. Tinnitus can be perceived over any level of sound if you are focused on it. Likewise it can drop back when we are focused on other things.
You can imagine tinnitus as having an attention dial, rather than a volume dial on a stereo. Our sense of hearing is designed to focus on one thing well, while maintaining awareness of other sounds in a low-energy way. Try this exercise:
1. Pick an environmental sound (e.g. the fridge). Concentrate on the sound, look at the fridge and listen to it. It will become more
prominent than it was.
2. Pick another environmental sound, maybe the traffic outside the house. Imagine the source, see the cars going past in your mind. After a few seconds the traffic seems more prominent and the fridge noise falls back.
3. Switch back and forth between various sounds, each for a good 15 seconds.
What this should show you is that sound is subjective, and attention is capable of affecting it. Tinnitus signals are even more subjective. The more you focus on it, the more prominent it will be. If you have constant tinnitus, like I do, it likely will ‘fall back’ when you do that exercise. The more you engage your sensory resources (listening, looking, touching, imagining the sources), the less attention you have available for interpreting the tinnitus signal.
Tinnitus is also affected by the stress response (fight or flight), which is designed to sharpen our senses in times of danger. Visual and auditory information becomes the focus of our brain, and we feel anxious. People who have
successfully ignored their tinnitus for months or years can find it suddenly becomes a major issue when they go through a stressful time such as lockdown or a bereavement. It’s important for them to know that it can and will drop back when the stress recedes.
Ultimately, what sufferers tend to do with the tinnitus signal is focus in on it, which is a natural response. However, focusing in and thinking about it simply trains the brain to devote resources to the signal. This is why I tell people not to even say the word! I run a support group in Brighouse and we call it ‘T Club’, rather than Tinnitus Support Group. The group runs every six weeks at the Salvation Army in Brighouse. Please contact me if you would like to join, or if you’d like to enquire about my tinnitus or hearing care services.

The fitness trends of the last century.
Fitness trends over the last century have certainly changed massively with the influx of technology such as smartwatches, here we take a look over the trends over the last century.
Dumbbell exercises and stretching were still a thing along with wooden treadmills and vibrating belts said to destroy fat, while such higherend fitness equipment was only found in gyms that were the preserve of the wealthy.
The world’s first fitness guru, Mary Bagot Stack, whose philosophy was “movement is life” founded the Women’s League of Health and Beauty whose group exercise classes included the likes of leg lifts, star jumps, and toe touching. This soon spread from the UK to around the world.
There was the ongoing misconception way back when that women couldn’t build muscle and stay slim, so fitness was still all about low-impact exercises. But now it was all slim waists and curvy figures in contrast to the svelteness of the previous jazz age, believed to be achievable via routines like rotating the arms propeller-like.
The decade where yoga entered the public consciousness along with fun-filled activities like the hula
hoop, and the Bongo Board that incorporates a balance board positioned around a plastic ball – a craze that soon went global. Not so fun was the ‘slimming suit’, a plastic exercise outfit that caused excess perspiration and supposed weight loss.
1960s
Thin was once again in vogue during the swinging sixties, a decade that gave us not only the twist dance but the Trim Twist – a simple floor exercise machine that riffed on the iconic dance move to encourage the user to twist from side to side. Vibrating belts promised to shake excess fat from the thighs.
The most fitness-conscious decade to date, there was a body-building boom and a steep rise in yoga and tai chi practitioners. Trampolining was embraced by adults and kids alike and traditional gym equipment such as the parallel rings and balance bars could be found in many public parks.
Jane Fonda went from Hollywood superstar to wellness guru with her nowiconic aerobics videos. Fonda’s first effort, Jane Fonda’s Workout, released in 1982, became the highest-selling VHS of the 20th century. She went on to release a further 22 videos, totalling more than 17 million sales.
Things went up a level – literally – with the birth of step aerobics in the 90s while the must-have at-home equipment were the tummy-toning Abdomenizer and the thigh-toning Thighmaster.
The 2000s saw the arrival of Zumba, a Latin dance-inspired workout class that conquered the world. CrossFit, developed by former gymnast Greg Glassman, mixed gymnastics, weightlifting, and callisthenics, while high-intensity interval training, or HIIT classes, relied on short bursts of intensive exercises.

Bathrooms work in a similar way – the Scandi influences offer natural light, and neutral tones we typically associate with bathroom items; while the Scandi influence once again paints simple lines and uncomplicated ideas onto a canvas that should offer you calm and serenity.
A bedroom would therefore showcase plain walls and bedsheets, in bright tones, but complemented with wooden furniture, classic shapes and a hint of nature, where functionality is important, but cleanness prevails.

Not surprisingly, this online trend has begun to seep into modern culture with knitwear having a few massive moments. There was Bernie Sanders’ mittens which basically became the meme of Joe Biden’s inauguration; the cream, cable knit sweater worn by Chris Evans in thriller flick Knives Out (who knew cable knit could be so sexy?); and diver Tom Daley’s magnificent Team GB cardigan which he was seen knitting poolside at the Tokyo 2020 games.

The most popular car colours in the UK… and why.
Avoiding the pitfalls of selling your car privately. offered something you don’t actually want… another car!
Selling your motor privately can be good for a number of reasons - you get the best price, you get cash in hand, and don’t even have to leave home.
However, the process of stripping out the middleman and selling your car direct does come with a few pitfalls too:
The most popular colour of car for those rolling off the production line in 2020 was grey/silver, accounting for one in four cars. Continuing the shift from previous years, that kept black back in second place (with a 20% market share), after it lost top spot in 2018. White cars come in third (17.5%) with blue in fourth (17%).
That means those four colours account for very nearly seven out of 10 new cars in the UK.
You may find countless people phoning up asking endless questions – remember, buyers will be as wary about the process as sellers. The best way to avoid this is to make your listing as detailed as possible, adding lots of photos.
The more questions you can answer before someone picks up the phone to you, the better.
An interesting shift towards lighter colours is thought to have come about because of electric cars. Typically, when purchasing these, there is thought to be a subconscious leaning towards brighter, more uplifting and emotionally positive colours – white particularly.
Overall car colours

Those looking to buy a car privately will doubtless have several options on the go at once, meaning you can be messed about because your prospective buyer has had his or her head turned elsewhere.

than just new) car numbers, black still leads the way, but only just. While there are 6.5million black vehicles currently on the roads, its cluster of nearest rivals – notably grey/ silver and blue – are closing in!
A huge worry for many vendors is agreeing a price over the phone only to find someone at your door pressuring you for a discount.
It’s important to try to set the boundaries before someone comes round to inspect, but that can be easier said than done.
In the event of something going wrong with the car in the immediate time after it’s

bought, the buyer will also have your home address so is likely to come knocking if anything seems wrong in those weeks post-purchase.

The meeting of two minds – a private seller and a private buyer – is effectively putting both on their guard.

of hiding untidiness. There’s also the saying, ‘since a grey car is never in fashion, it can never be out of fashion’, denoting the colour as a middle ground for those who perhaps are keener to enjoy a motor for what’s inside it or under the engine, rather than the colour of its outer shell.
This can create a scenario where both are approaching what should be a simple transaction with a heightened sense of paranoia and panic, and that can lead to a joyless transaction.
Beige, green, purple and yellow are thought to be the most unpopular car colours in the UK. Rare tones can give outgoing, outlandish and eccentric car users a lot of fun, but those same colours’ lack of popularity is as much to do with a low resale value… that is, unless you want to invest in a respray!
And of course, the biggest fear for those who sell privately is that someone will run off with your motor. Ensure all monies have been transferred before handing over documentation, be wary over PayPal transactions (which can be refunded) and if accepting cash, check notes carefully.

One of the most arid places on Earth, it stretches for 1,000 miles down the Pacific Coast. Curiously, it combines temperatures you would expect of a desert, with the frozen snow-covered climes of the Atlas Mountains – a ‘cold desert’ that also features flowery landscapes and oases. In summing up, it is a mass of marvellous contradictions.

A destination instantly recognisable, the South Pole is the coldest of the two poles. There are mountains, animals and ice, ice, ice; yet the inhospitable nature of the expanse welcomed more visitors last year than any other in the past.

Bea the Giraffe and Wilma the Ostrich

Having narrowly avoided the cooking pot, Mabel was already counting her proverbial chicks before they’d hatched, and now living inside the house of a farm in Shrewsbury she soon began helping fellow resident Nettle, who had just delivered her brood.

1st Mirfield Brownie Unit are counting down to the celebration of their 100th year. The unit was opened on the 10th of April 1923 and is still going strong.
Brownies, originally under the name Rosebuds, first meet in 1914 so we are a very early unit whose ongoing operation is down to the dedication of generations of Mirfield girls and women contributing to this legacy. The unit has met in a few places around Mirfield over the years including the hall underneath the Methodist chapel at the bottom of Nab Lane back in the 1980s and 1990s.
Our unit is part of a much wider Guiding community here within Mirfield where we have several Rainbow Units (girls aged 5-6); other Brownies units (girls aged 7-9) and Guide units (girls aged 10-14). We are also proud to support young women who are completing their Duke of Edinburgh awards, many of whom go on to become young leaders, helping units and girls grow.
As you can imagine Brownies and Girlguiding has changed considerably over the past 100 years, girls no longer carry change for an emergency call on a pay phone for a start! These days we have all kinds of adventures from the more traditional crafts and baking to science experiments, coding activities, climbing, skating,
camping, campfire cooking, canal boats, using tools, building inventions, doing First Aid, basically we try to give girls and young women the confidence and skills to grow and become who they want to be whilst building great memories. In addition to unit meetings, we have unit holidays and camping trips, participate in the annual Mirfield Remembrance Day parade, sleepovers at places like the Deep in Hull and large-scale events with the wider Guiding community. Just this month we have held our annual Divisional event where girls of all ages from all over Calder meet up to form friendships and learn new skills together whilst having an afternoon of crafting fun.
One thing that has stayed the same is that we still love badges. These days girls work towards achieving their Gold award within the unit and are able to complete badges on topics such as collecting, knowing their rights, performing, growing plants, aviation, space, speaking out, inventing, jobs and languages. I know our girls really enjoyed completing a number of badges over the years, most recently a Wizarding Badge and a Physics badge. With 1st Mirfield turning 100
next year we will definitely be working on our Local History badge.
We are very interested to hear from anyone who may have memories of the unit, either as a child, a parent, or a leader. If anyone should have any memories, photographs or memorabilia please get in touch via email atmirfielddc@gmail.com
If you are interested in joining in the fun by volunteering with Girlguiding, please contact me on the above email or on the volunteering page on the Girlguiding website at www.girlguiding.org.uk/getinvolved/become-a-volunteer/
If your daughter is aged between 5 and 14 and would like to have great adventures you can register her atwww.girlguiding.org.uk/ information-for-parents/ register-your-daughter
