Hello and welcome to your December issue of The Mirfield Word.
It’s no secret that Christmas is my favourite edition of the year. I just love the festivities and all the Christmas adverts. It really gets me in the mood to start Christmas celebrations... which of course starts with the Christmas tree! Ours will be going up on December 1st courtesy of Forest Fresh, who as always, you can read more about in this issue. There is nothing quite like a real Christmas tree, the look of it, the smell and of course the twinkly lights on it, lighting up the room on those cold, dark nights.
Throughout this issue, you can find lots of festive advertisements from businesses who really appreciate your custom, whether it is a pub/ restaurant enticing you to book your Christmas lunch with them, pre-Christmas lunches with friends and family… or a local business selling gifts that the whole family can enjoy! We really do have it all.
Our what’s on guide is packed to the brim this month of events happening locally. Christmas markets, church services, Carols around the Christmas tree and everything in between! Keep hold of this issue as reference to these events and make it a date in your diary.
We are now taking bookings for businesses wishing to feature in The Mirfield Word in 2023. If you or anyone you know would like more information, please do not hesitate to get in touch. I promise, we are a friendly bunch and will do our best to accommodate your Advertising requirements.
I’d like to take this opportunity to say a huge thanks to our in-house designer Corey, and our fabulous distribution team, who deliver your Mirfield Word every month. This year, as always, you have been outstanding, and I think I speak for everyone when I say thank you for your hard work on ensuring the Mirfield Word is what it is today - FAB - U - LOUS!
Thank you to all our readers and advertisers for your loyalty in 2022, and I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a happy, healthy new year.
Here’s to 2023...
Look out for your January 2023 issue dropping through the door from December 27th. Enjoy December and remember to keep shopping local!

After a two-year enforced break, Mirfield will be singing in the festivities this Christmas Eve with the annual Carols Round The Tree outside Mirfield Library from 4 pm on Saturday 24th December.
Now in its twelfth year, this free festive community gathering has quickly become a Mirfield family tradition to meet up with friends and family and welcome in the big day - especially after recent missed years.
A true coming together of local organisations, businesses and residents has seen Carols
Round The Tree grow year after year - each adding something new each year.
Expect the brass band to be providing the music, a choir to lead the singing, refreshments, Martyn Jones as the festive compere, and local residents, including Mirfield Town Council giving their take on Christmas in Mirfield.
Carols will include favourites such as: Away in a Manger, While Shepherds Watched, We Three Kings of Orient Are, O Little Town of Bethlehem, Once in Royal David’s City and Silent Night.
Additional thanks must be given to Mirfield Library, the Police, and Kirklees amongst others, for their ongoing support.
Everyone is welcome to join the singers and brass band to welcome in Christmas in the traditional way. Song sheets will be available on the night, and don’t forget to wrap up warm and bring a torch.

The most popular car colours in the UK… and why.
This month, four cracking reads for the busiest book-buying time of the year.
The most popular colour of car for those rolling off the production line in 2020 was grey/silver, accounting for one in four cars. Continuing the shift from previous years, that kept black back in second place (with a 20% market share), after it lost top spot in 2018. White cars come in third (17.5%) with blue in fourth (17%).
That means those four colours account for very nearly seven out of 10 new cars in the UK.
An interesting shift towards lighter colours is thought to have come about because of electric cars. Typically, when purchasing these, there is thought to be a subconscious leaning towards brighter, more uplifting and emotionally positive colours – white particularly.
The healthy eating phenomenon that is Pinch of Nom returns with another hundred scrumptious recipes – from fakeaways to desserts – that are both tantalising to the taste buds and good for the waistline.

Black and white in a colourful world? Most people can offer reasons to both love and hate certain car colours. Having a black car, for instance, means dirt shows up less, and it’s perhaps the smoothest and most stylish of vehicles out there; yet many people dislike it for its formal nature.
A sudden downpour while Scotty Mills was walking down a street in South London sent him diving for cover into the nearest shop. It turned out to be a recruitment centre for the Royal Marines and, after a few minutes’ conversation while waiting for the rain to stop, Scotty was hooked and signed up to join the elite force. It changed his life and set him on a new direction that would end up with him leading the Marines on operations around the world, becoming an Olympic flag bearer in 2012 and dining at Buckingham Palace with the Queen and the royal family.
White cars are known to hide scratches well, and the paint is typically cheaper than most other colours. There’s also the

of hiding untidiness. There’s also the saying, ‘since a grey car is never in fashion, it can never be out of fashion’, denoting the colour as a middle ground for those who perhaps are keener to enjoy a motor for what’s inside it or under the engine, rather than the colour of its outer shell.
In curating this collection of first-hand accounts, broadcaster, writer and traveller Mariella Frostrup puts female explorers back on the map. Her selection includes explorers from the 1700s to the present day, from iconic heroines to lesser-known eccentrics, celebrating 300 years of wild women and their amazing adventures over land, sea and air. Beige, green, purple and yellow are thought to be the most unpopular car colours in the UK. Rare tones can give outgoing, outlandish and eccentric car users a lot of fun, but those same colours’ lack of popularity is as much to do with a low resale value… that is, unless you want to invest in a respray!

Farewell to the balletic and graceful Roger Federer.
Roger Federer did things on a tennis court that no-one had done previously – his power, poise, purpose and punishing ability to keep going way beyond the point where many would have quit. And unlike so many others who went before him, the Basel-born athlete conducted himself with grace, with a sense of immaculate class, and always as someone who appeared to love every moment on grass, clay or hard court.
“I always said I would carry on until the very last point I could,” said Federer, in the immediate aftermath of his retirement announcement, “and I feel I have done that.
“I don’t think there’s anything much left to give – I am done, but only in a good way!”
‘Fed-Ex’ didn’t so much as participate in a way that was competitive or ruthless, more he demonstrated theatre which wouldn’t have been out of place on Broadway.
“I was always fascinated by movement, and it’s something I thought about a lot during my career,” he says. “When you are moving during a rally, the shot looks so much nicer. It really is art.
“People like to see a tennis player using the court, the ball, the opponent – so, that’s what I’ve always done.
I certainly have found so much satisfaction in the artistic beauty of the sport.
“I saw the majesty and the beauty in gliding and movement - I understood it and I decided to play that way.”
That arguably the three greatest tennis players ever to have lived (he, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic) were forced to share the spoils during the same period, might be seen as unfortunate; yet for Federer, the power of competition was the thing that ultimately drove him forward. “I never wanted to win easy,” he admits. “I never took satisfaction in turning up and smashing some guy around the court.
“To win in a way that feels worthwhile must be the very first thing a sportsman aims at. If you don’t reach the personal satisfaction of having had to
battle and fight for your reward in life, then I don’t see how you can ever feel fulfilled.”
In retirement, Federer has promised fans he’ll never be too far away from the sport, yet exploring new avenues is clearly something he feels he will relish. “I am excited about a free schedule, about enjoying a meal without counting calories, and of course the thrill of spending more time with my family is very special.
“I have projects that have been on hold for many years, and now I can play them out and see what the next chapter in my life brings forward.”
I have advertised with the Mirfield Word magazine from the first issue 8 years ago, and I can’t praise it enough. It is the only advertising I do and need to do as it brings in lots of work locally. Corey is a brilliant designer and works with me 1-2-1 each month to create a new design. I can’t fault the service or the cost.
Graham - Mirfield Mill Carpets.
Every time I advertise with the Mirfield Word, I put in new seasonal offers. I always know when the magazines have gone out as I get lots of calls about the offers.
I recommend the Mirfield Word to anyone looking to increase their customer base.
Diane - Georgis Tanning and Beauty.
We have been advertising with the Mirfield Word for the last 6 months, and I am blown away by the response. Jenna is so easy to work with and makes advertising a pleasure. The amount of work we get from the magazine more than pays for the advert, and being from Mirfield, we are proud to feature our local business in our local magazine. We will continue to advertise every month in the Mirfield Word as we have no reason not to!
Greta - Moli Resin Drives.
We have advertised with the Mirfield Word for 7 years now, and we are more than happy with the service. It is such a cost-effective way of reaching a huge local audience, and we always get jobs from the Mirfield Word every month. Jenna also gives us editorial pages throughout the year as a thank you for our commitment which always brings in extra work. We love the magazine, and you can really see the quality of the work that goes into it, not to mention the printing quality.
Derek - DM Interiors.
I only started advertising with the Mirfield Word 3 months ago but will continue to do so. From the first time the advert went in, I was really surprised by how many calls I got and the work I received. It has more than paid for itself and Jenna was very helpful from my first email offering advice which helped me with my marketing. I can’t recommend the Mirfield Word enough.

The amazing Robin Royd lights are back again this year, and as always, they are bigger and better than the previous years.
Derek has proudly raised over £70,000 for Kirkwood Hospice over the 20 years he has held this magical festivity for the people of Mirfield.
“I know this year is tough for many people, but the generosity of the people of Mirfield never ceases to amaze me. People asked if I would do it this year due to the rising energy costs, and my answer was a very easy Yes! Kirkwood really needs the donations coming in, and I am proud that I can raise money for them in this way” Quotes Derek.
If you want to visit the lights, all Derek asks is that you are respectful of the neighbours with regards to parking, and all contributions are welcome and gratefully received, no matter how big or small.
Merry Christmas from Derek and the Highe Family.

Six must-have winter warmer accessory trends for the current season.
If you can’t resist a miniskirt this winter, be sure to grab some thigh high boots to go with it.
One of this winter’s hottest trends, boots on the catwalk have been above-the-knee and beyond. There was lots of leather from the likes of Louis Vuitton and Burberry, while the occasionally avant-garde Chanel presented thighskimming wellington boots. Though stylish and practical, the £2,000 makes them somewhat unsuitable for gardening.
Thankfully, there are more affordable versions on the high street so get out there and impress!
2. Shine like a star
Beat the blues with a little shimmer and glitz this winter.
It’s not the boldest look, but a flash of gold like Prada’s brushed leather pumps or Jill Sander’s leather mules –which almost resemble crinkled Christmas candy wrappers – will brighten up even the dullest outfit.
There have also been lots of silvery metallics in handbags – big and small – and even
sequinned, chainmail-esque headwear at Erdem… ideal for a glam ‘knight’ out!
3.
If you like to put comfort before style, then you will be thrilled to hear that hiking boots are officially on trend.
The rule is, the chunkier and sturdier the better, though preferably paired with a feminine skirt and, if you’re feeling really fancy, cashmere socks.
If you’re not a big walker, don’t worry, these boots look equally stylish stepping out of a cab.
4.
Talking of socks, things got really glam from the knee down at Christian Dior and Simone Rocha, who sent models out with socks sewn with beads and pearls, respectively.
Max Mara on the other hand (or foot), had sumptuously soft, long, red socks with ribbons sewn in; while Acne Studios went for the slightly more punk
aesthetic, also known as: socks with holes in.
5. Cool for caps Baseball caps are not usually synonymous with high-end fashion, but this winter they play a starring role. No longer the reserve of sports brands, monogrammed head gear was all over the catwalks, with Givenchy going the extra mile in luxury with a black leather one – undoubtedly the peak of style.
Slouchy, sexy and compatible with almost any outfit, the hobo bag is not only as lovely as we remember it, it has also had an upgrade.
Monogrammed and suspending from a gold chain at Louis Vuitton, crushed and cutesy pink satin courtesy of Miu Miu; and boasting a sheepskin trim at Chanel… it’s a hobo, baby, but not as we know it.

How to get through the festive period without piling on the pounds.
Nobody wants to be a bore at Christmas. For so many of us, it’s time of the year reserved for throwing caution, exercise routines and diet plans to the wind, where we can reflect, relax and treat ourselves.
And yet there is a downside… of course! What follows in New Year is a bevy of mind-bending marketing telling us to get into shape and change habits for the better.
The good news is, rather seeing Christmas as an expression of hitting rock bottom in our health wealth, we can actually use it as a springboard for improvement in 2023.
So here are five ways you can have a first-class festive season where health and fitness are at the forefront of your thinking… not tucked down the side of the sofa with the Cadbury’s Roses wrappers!
1. Drink plenty of water Make sure that you keep hydrated throughout the festive period… with water!
Okay, so it’s no crime to treat yourself to the odd tipple or three, but taking on other regular fluids, and water in particular, will balance your body out, helping your liver at a time when it takes most punishment, whilst aiding digestion too.
And on that note, it’s worth remembering that drinking water can stop your hunger from getting the better of you. Research shows drinking a glass of water prior to eating will reduce appetite by a third.
2. Lessen your cheese overload It’s a fair assumption – rather than investing in large portions
of chocolate cake or the decorative delights of selection box sweets, switch instead to a dairy option, and the light delights of the cheese and cracker combination.
Unfortunately, while cheese obviously has less sugar, it also contains more calories.
The solution, and one that will also ensure you feel sated in your fromage frivolity, is to have a smaller quantity of a strong cheese (Roquefort or Stilton, for instance) – the strength has actually been proven to act as a tastebud deterrent after the first few mouthfuls.
And if you just can’t resist chocolate, ensure it’s dark chocolate, which is proven to lessen the chance of heart disease due to the presence of antioxidants.
3. Go nuts and not crackers Look at avoiding crisps and baked snacks as much as you possibly can and, instead, try satsumas and nuts. Both contain high quantities of
vitamin C and healthy oils, and are much lower in fat.
Replace crackers with oatcakes - their slow-release sugars mean you feel fuller for much longer. Oatcakes also have soluble fibre that’s friendly on the heart, assisting in cholesterolshifting from the bloodstream.
4.
Of course most of us prefer the protein and carbohydrate elements when it comes to big meals over the Christmas period – potato-based elements and meat can, for some of us, feel even more resistible than usual, particularly on a cold, dark day; yet the better your vegetable ratios, the healthier the meal.
In fairness, as far as Christmas Day lunch goes, it’s often the sheer mass of food that actually makes it unhealthy, although steering clear of things such as crispy turkey skin and chipolatas will undoubtedly help.
5. Fish risk
Smoked salmon is always a festive favourite, in various forms, but try to avoid butter; and instead of hollandaise sauce, make it with freshly squeezed lemon and black pepper.
Similarly, for prawn cocktail, use Greek yoghurt instead of the typical high-fat mayonnaise option.
More and more men are becoming increasingly focused on taking care of their skin and aesthetic procedures. Many men now want to refresh, rejuvenate, and reverse the signs of ageing. That’s where we come in. Here at Meraki we are now offering Men Only clinics a few times per month.
As with women, when men age the face begins to lose fat from the tear troughs and mid-face region.
This means we look a lot more tired than we feel and a lot older than our years. Couple this with the loss of collagen with age, and those little creases become permanent. You may find that expression lines remain long after the smile or frown has faded.
Profhilo - This magic injectable boosts the skin’s collagen and elasticity. It’s renowned for its lifting and tightening benefits.
For men who don’t want their faces to be defined by signs of ageing and environmental damage, a peel is often a suitable solution. We may recommend a combination chemical peel combined with micro-needling.
• Acne and mild scarring
• Liver spots, age spots, and wrinkles
• Rough texture
• Uneven skin tone
• Sun damage
• Melasma
Micro-needling is an advanced cosmetic treatment and a wonderful way to reboot the skin and encourage the skin’s natural healing ability, microneedling can help men clear their skin of several imperfections such as:
• Loose skin
• Uneven skin tone
• Mild scarring from acne
• Enlarged pores
• Stretch marks
A more chiselled profile can be very aesthetically pleasing for men. Facial contouring can be achieved in a variety of ways without resorting to surgery.
Whether you want a straighter profile to your nose, a more chiselled chin, more structure to your cheekbones or a stronger jaw line we can help you achieve this using a range of techniques
If you don’t have a particularly strong jawline and would like more prominent, enhanced features, non-surgical jaw augmentation (jawline contouring) is for you.
Filler can also be added to the chin, it is quite possibly the most underestimated dermal filler treatment. Chin augmentation can have the biggest impact aesthetically, balancing the whole face & profile more so than any other treatment.
Here at Meraki, we love to sculpt the jawline using the cannula technique, this method makes the treatment more comfortable for the client, safer and with less chance of bruising and swelling.
The tear trough is the area between your lower eyelid and cheek and as we age, we can experience volume loss in this area which can often cause dark circles and hollows under the eyes. This is not an uncommon problem and can be treated easily with tear trough dermal filler. Tear trough treatment is quick, it effectively restores lost volume, and reduces dark circles under the eyes. It also reduces fine lines and wrinkles as the dermal fillers hydrate from the inside. This treatment will give you natural-looking results with a fresher, less tired-looking appearance.
It is not unusual for men to now want to receive anti-wrinkle injections. Just check out the pics of David Beckham... It seems he has recently undergone some cosmetic treatments and the results are amazing!
Most people are well aware of the use of anti-ageing injections for the correction of wrinkles and expression lines, however, this wonderful injectable has many other uses such as the correction of ‘gummy smiles’ improving the ratio of tooth and gum on show when you smile, excessive sweating and teeth grinding.

Jolene explained that “People are often wrong in thinking that if they have made a will then the individuals that they have appointed as executors would be able became ill, had a stroke, developed dementia or lost capacity in some other way during their lifetime.
As well as having a will in place everyone, regardless of age, should have a Lasting Power of Attorney (‘LPA’). The will would deal with their estate on death and a LPA that deals with their estate during their lifetime.
There are two types of LPAs- one that deals with health and welfare. The LPA allows the attorney, who can be family members, to deal with banks accounts, pensions, utility providers etc but also
to make decisions such as where the person lives.
By putting a LPA in place during your lifetime it removes the burden on children should you later become ill and would avoid a lengthy and expensive application to the Court.
It is important to act early as the individual making the LPA must have capacity to make the LPA and isn’t a document for those in later life to put in place. The age at which people can be diagnosed with Dementia can be as young as 48 and I have often acted for individuals who have had accidents which has left them unable health decisions for themselves which has resulted in a very long and very expensive application to the Court.”
Jolene Head Director, JH Wills LtdDirector of JH Wills Ltd
Jolene Head explains why some homeowners are leaving it too late or simply doing nothing at all to protect their hard-earned assets.
Most couples are not aware that if they require care at a later date the local authority will look at their assets on a means-tested basis to see whether it will contribute towards an individual’s care.
When a financial assessment is carried out assets have to fall below £14,250 before it will contribute towards any care fees.
I have dealt with estates where the person who made a will thought that they would be leaving their children the family home ranging from £120,000 - £500,000 but, because the surviving spouse has since gone into care, the actual amount received by the children was £14,250.
If the first person to die (in a married couple) leaves everything to the surviving spouse and the spouse then goes into care it doesn’t take much time for a person’s estate to diminish from £120,000 to £14,250 when the average weekly cost of care
is £900.
“I dealt with one particular case when a client had left all his estate to his wife in his will and she subsequently went into care. It was initially £280,000, taking into account the property that they owned and bank accounts, savings etc. She was in care for four years, at a cost of £46,800 per year, and when we came to deal with the estate the two children received £92,800 between the two of them rather than the £280,000 that their parents had hoped they would pass to them”.
What can you do about it?
I have a lot of clients approach me to sign their house over to their children now as they feel it wouldn’t be taken into account if the local authority later carried out a financial assessment. This is not correct as the local authority has an unlimited amount of time to look back at what assets that individual had and if it is of the view that the person who is going into care has ‘deliberately deprived’ themselves by giving the property away it can seek to have the person who received the asset to pay for the care.
Not only does the outright transfer not work for care fees but it is a high-
risk step to take.
The property would no longer by owned by you and as such you could be forced to leave the property or it could be taken into account if your children divorced or if they had financial difficulties–so it certainly isn’t something we would recommend.
At JH Wills Ltd we recommend changing the way in which you own your property from a joint tenancy to a tenancy-in-common and leave the property on trust for the surviving spouse instead of gifting the entire estate to one another. It is important that couples act now as it isn’t something that can be done when one party dies or becomes incapacitated as they will not be in a position to give us instructions.
Other than care fee planning our clients have used the type of planning we offer to prevent their children from losing out if their spouse was to remarry
Most of our clients don’t realise that if their spouse was to remarry then their will would automatically be cancelled and their estate would likely all pass to their new spouse not their children.
What is a Lasting Power of Attorney and why do I need one?

Someone asked me the other day what it was that terrified me most in life, and my first thought was to pull out a large sheet of paper and get scribbling any number of possible options. I wouldn’t describe myself necessarily as one of life’s worriers, but by the same token I do like to take a cautious and protective approach to my family, my finances and myself. And for the most part I think that’s pretty much the same for all of us.

Unfortunately, the link between mental health and money is arguably the most tacit of them all – both affect and impact each other. Their cyclical nature means that when we are worried about bills it affects our own ability to focus and work, and that then further impacts wellbeing.

We know how effective plants are at drawing CO2 out of the atmosphere. That means that while our gardens are wonderful spaces for our sensual pleasure, they brilliantly counteract global warming and our fight against climate change. In other words, they become ‘carbon sinks’.

It’s for this same reason that turning over soil is actually bad for your garden. Not only does it interrupt nature’s ability to let your earth matter settle into an organised pattern that benefits both plants and the creatures living in the soil, but turning over, or tilling, releases more carbon.

Beyond this, we can be more environmentally friendly by using organic fertilisers; and never be afraid to let your outdoor space ‘go wild’. Rustic gardens are the ultimate low-carbon spaces, and that makes sense, because wild areas such as forests, wetlands and mangroves are the very best at protecting against the risks posed by climate change.

Naturally, in the past there were warm tropical periods between the ice ages, and we came through those, although what’s clear is that the rate of change seems to be happening more rapidly now. And yet before people worry too much, our gardens will, for the most part, cope just fine with a two or three degree change in temperature – we see them doing this every year.

The best way to achieve this is by growing native plants. Not only are they best suited to these conditions and will grow at a manageable speed - and in simple terms, the quicker a plant grows, the more CO2 it is absorbing – but we also won’t find ourselves being caught out by a non-native variety that can really take hold of a space. When that happens, our reaction is to use harmful chemical means to control them. Beyond that, we pull them up, exposing soil and releasing carbon.

We can also compost – it’s a great way of stopping carbon getting out in the first place. The same applies to mulching, too. When you consider that over 80% of the carbon in your garden is released from the soil, by adding a layer of wood bark chippings, for instance, you are holding the carbon in the soil.

Simpson Dennis is a family run business located in Mirfield. Customer satisfaction is the key to their success and many contracts are the result of word-of-mouth recommendation from many satisfied customers, who have been delighted with the prompt service, attention to detail and high standard of work that they have received from this firm.
Their reputation has been built on strong foundations. Dennis has worked on major contracts around the country including restaurants for the Little Chef Chain, before starting his own business in Mirfield, 30 years ago. Simpson Dennis are approved by many leading insurance companies across the country, to not only carry out work on their behalf for insurance claims, but also to inspect new claims and produce a full report on their findings – a testimonial in itself to their excellent workmanship.
“When searching for a roofer, people are often searching for the most competitive price, and when costs are under quoted for the job, you are often compensating in other areas such as quality of materials, service, time taken on the job and the
after care service. In my 30 years in business I have seen many companies come and go meaning that there is no aftercare provided and no guarantee on the work carried out” quotes Dennis. “It is a real shame when someone has made a long term investment such as this to their home; they find that when a problem arises, the firm they have used is nowhere to be seen. The old saying of “Pay Cheap, Pay Twice” unfortunately does mean just that when it comes to these things”.
Simpson Dennis is quick to dissociate themselves from businesses like this and have often been called to fix problems for customers when the firm they have used originally have gone out of business.
They cover a whole range of roofing services from small roof repairs, lead and chimney work, guttering and pointing, to large re-roofing contracts for the domestic market and only use the highest quality of materials.
They are qualified and insured, which gives you the peace of mind needed, that they will carry out all work to a very high standard and can fulfil their guarantees.

These days most homeowners suffer from a lack of storage space. So many precious items that need to be kept but where to store it all? That’s where Yorkshire Loft Ladders come in.
The company, based locally, offers homeowners the opportunity to maximise their storage space with a loft ladder, 50 sq ft of boarding and a light all fully fitted in less than a day from just £277 + VAT. But it’s not just the affordability of the package the company offers that makes Yorkshire Loft Ladders stand out as manager Warren Ingleson explains:
‘Our watchwords are Quality,
Integrity and Value. Quality in the materials that we use for all our installations and the fact that all our loft packages are fitted by time served tradesmen so our customers are assured of the best job. Integrity in that we will turn up at the time we say and make sure the house is spotless when we leave, and Value in that we offer our services at a price people can afford. Our business relies on referrals and we got a huge amount of our calls from people who have been referred to us by our existing customers that simply wouldn’t happen if we didn’t adhere to our overriding principles.
At the end of the day the old adage that happy customers
lead to more happy customers is true and we work hard to make that happen for every installation we carry out!’
So, if you want to make use of your loft space, however big or
small, call Warren on 0800 612 8359 and he’ll be happy to pop round and give you a no obligation quote so you too can make use of your loft!

To me, the relationship between making things and sustainability is essential, and I fear, as Western society, we’ve lost touch with the value of made things… with the value of raw materials, of the energy required. I don’t just mean fossil fuel energy, but also the human energy that goes into the process.

What goes in is normally a raw material, something dug out of the ground - rough and unprocessed. And what comes out is such beauty. A tree in one end, a table comes out the other; a lump of unrefined iron in one end, a beautifully wrought table or door handle out the other end.

I am so glad and so grateful to the small producers who are doing this on a very local level because, generally speaking, we actually aren’t a ‘making society’ anymore, and we have lost a lot of that raw manufacturing spirit.

People talk a lot about sustainability using words like carbon and energy consumption – all that technical stuff – yet sustainability also comes in the form of the value of the objects we place inside our homes, and the value of the building’s materials.

After all, we are five times less likely to throw away something we have made compared to something we have bought.

What I’m saying is we need to continue to keep creating homes that are rich in their fabric, but that are filed with things of value as well, so that we can share those stories with people, make friends, and embed ourselves into a community. That to me is actually a big part of what sustainability is about.

With energy costs on the rise, households across the country are looking for ways to reduce their bills. But did you know that heating and hot water typically accounts for more than half of your home’s energy usage?
Knowing this and making relevant upgrades to your boiler can go a long way to reducing your energy bills, as well as lowering your carbon footprint - something we can all get on board with.
you’ve been using the same boiler for a good few years, it’s probably time for an upgrade. Modern boilers are much more efficient than older models, and the savings you can make by upgrading to a newer machine (up to £580 per year) can go a long way to ease the surging cost of living.
Upgrading to a new boiler is a great way to save money on your energy bills and is probably cheaper than you think it will be!
need a new boiler?
Generally, the newer your boiler is, the more efficient it is at using energy. In other words, they less gas or electricity to heat water up, which of course means they cost less to do their job. your current boiler is 10 years old or more, then you can likely make significant savings by upgrading to a more modern and more efficient heating system.
important to note that while investing in a new boiler will come with an upfront cost, this shouldn’t put you off as thanks to its much-improved efficiency, you should make this investment in a few years through lower energy bills. This is even more true today with soaring wholesale energy costs.
How much can I save with a new boiler?
Upgrading your boiler should be seen as a long-term investment, with the money saved in lower energy bills paying back the initial cost of the new boiler over a number of years.
boilers have an energy-efficiency rating, with A being the most efficient, and G being the lowest. Therefore, the amount you can save on your energy bills with a new boiler will depend on what type boiler you’re replacing, as well as the type of home you live in.
find out more on how a new boiler could help with the ever-rising energy costs, please contact for an informal chat and a free of charge home consultation.
