What is a Lasting Power of Attorney and why do I need one?

became ill, had a stroke, developed dementia or lost capacity in some other way during their lifetime. As well as having a will in place everyone, regardless of age, should have a Lasting Power of Attorney (‘LPA’). The will would deal with their estate on death and a LPA that deals with their estate during their lifetime. There are two types of LPAs- one that deals with health and welfare. The LPA allows the attorney, who can be family members, to deal with banks accounts, pensions, utility providers etc but also

to make decisions such as where the person lives. By putting a LPA in place during your lifetime it removes the burden on children should you later become ill and would avoid a lengthy and expensive application to the Court. It is important to act early as the individual making the LPA must have capacity to make the LPA and isn’t a document for those in later life to put in place. The age at which people can be diagnosed with Dementia can be as young as 48 and I have often acted for individuals who have had accidents which has left them unable health decisions for themselves which has resulted in a very long and very expensive application to the Court.”

Make sure a WILL and LASTING POWER OF ATTORNEY is at the top of your to-do list this March!

Would you like to protect your family home from being taken to pay for your care?

Director of JH Wills Ltd Jolene Head explains why some homeowners are leaving it too late or simply doing nothing at all to protect their hard-earned assets. Current rules and regulations Most couples are not aware that if they require care at a later date the local authority will look at their assets on a means-tested basis to see whether it will contribute towards an individual’s care. When a financial assessment is carried out assets have to fall below £14,250 before it will contribute towards any care fees. I have dealt with estates where the person who made a will thought that they would be leaving their children the family home ranging from £120,000 - £500,000 but, because the surviving spouse has since gone into care, the actual amount received by the children was £14,250. If the first person to die (in a married couple) leaves everything to the surviving spouse and the spouse then goes into care it doesn’t take much time for a person’s estate to diminish from £120,000 to £14,250 when the average weekly cost of care

is £900.

risk step to take.

“I dealt with one particular case when a client had left all his estate to his wife in his will and she subsequently went into care. It was initially £280,000, taking into account the property that they owned and bank accounts, savings etc. She was in care for four years, at a cost of £46,800 per year, and when we came to deal with the estate the two children received £92,800 between the two of them rather than the £280,000 that their parents had hoped they would pass to them”.

The property would no longer by owned by you and as such you could be forced to leave the property or it could be taken into account if your children divorced or if they had financial difficulties–so it certainly isn’t something we would recommend.

What can you do about it? I have a lot of clients approach me to sign their house over to their children now as they feel it wouldn’t be taken into account if the local authority later carried out a financial assessment. This is not correct as the local authority has an unlimited amount of time to look back at what assets that individual had and if it is of the view that the person who is going into care has ‘deliberately deprived’ themselves by giving the property away it can seek to have the person who received the asset to pay for the care. Not only does the outright transfer not work for care fees but it is a high-

At JH Wills Ltd we recommend changing the way in which you own your property from a joint tenancy to a tenancy-in-common and leave the property on trust for the surviving spouse instead of gifting the entire estate to one another. It is important that couples act now as it isn’t something that can be done when one party dies or becomes incapacitated as they will not be in a position to give us instructions. Other than care fee planning our clients have used the type of planning we offer to prevent their children from losing out if their spouse was to remarry. Most of our clients don’t realise that if their spouse was to remarry then their will would automatically be cancelled and their estate would likely all pass to their new spouse not their children.

3. Cloud Administrator For many, a Cloud Administrator represents the first tier of what we term ‘newcollar’. Not only is cloud computing an obvious trend that is here to stay, but the rapid development of the sector means there is a true shortage of workers. As it stands, jobs can be filled by people who have completed training and certification programs, or are self-taught.

10

The role requires Microsoft Office proficiency, good communication skills, and experience with prior software implementation and training. 5. Cybersecurity Architect Cybersecurity ranks high in new-collar terms, with analysts expected to be in huge demand as corporations and governments look to protect consumers and customers. In America alone, in 2019, there were 1.5million unfilled cybersecurity jobs, and the number is now growing.

Pharmacy technicians are at the frontline of this; and rather than just a case of doling out medication, the task requires extensive training, supervision, assessment and examination.

4. Service Delivery Analyst A wide-ranging job role that encompasses everything from the rolling out of technology to logistics within the warehouse distribution environment, analysis of service delivery is clearly pivotal in a new world where so much of our lives are digital.

Working under the supervision of a physician and using a variety of technical equipment to produce ultrasound images, professional certification will need to be achieved; though for a specialism that has enjoyed a reported 26% growth since 2012, career security is solid.

Money on my mind... the Martin Lewis column

and willingness of people to feed their families more responsibly. The average food waste bill in the UK still stands at around £750 per year, and that’s horrendous. Remember the difference between Use By and Best Before, and it will save you hundreds each year.

He’s the UK’s leading money saving expert - a journalist and presenter who has kept millions of pounds in people’s pockets as well as lifting the lid on the threats and dangers we need to be aware of as consumers. In this month’s column, Martin Lewis looks at taking financial responsibility for ourselves in these postpandemic days. Someone asked me the other day if I thought banks were doing enough to help people and small businesses, as we move back into a state of normality following the pandemic. I had to remind them - the concept that a bank’s job is to help you with your finances, is not one that is true. In fact, one of the greatest dangers out there is to think that your bank should be helping you. A bank is a commercial organisation designed to sell products and make money. It is not there to look after you. Occasionally the two things do

coincide, but if I could hypnotise the nation, I’d say: “Look into my eyes, look into my eyes… every time you see the words ‘Bank Advisor,’ I want you to replace the word ‘Advisor’ with ‘Salesperson’… ‘Advisor’ with ‘Salesperson.’” A bank’s job is to sell to you, not to help you, not to advise you. Yes, you need to communicate with them when you encounter problems, because you have a contractual relationship with them. However, the concept that a bank advises you on a product because you need it, is not a good one. Even some of the pandemic

By date, you need to chuck it in the bin. Best Before is the manufacturer’s guide to optimum quality. All it means is that the item will be in its best possible condition before this date. The day after a Best Before, it’s still perfectly legitimate to eat.

moves by banks are now coming back to bite sole traders and small businesses, who are having to repay sums much greater than they expected. What the Coronavirus pandemic has given us, probably more than any point in the past 50 years, is an idea that we can turn to a bank, or the government, or a charity, for help and support. And I won’t deny that, in some examples, these entities have stood up and there has been a feeling of support and community.

With some canned goods, it’s still perfectly okay to eat them three or four years after the Best Before date. So, use your nose to smell it, use your eyes to look at it, use your senses to decide whether it’s right for you.

If you have any packaging that has a date on it, if it’s after that date, lots of people just sling the food. Well, let’s remember – Use By is a health notice to you. If something is beyond its Use

Just by diminishing that, and by having a decent shopping list and proper menu planning, you will cut down waste. That’s not just good for your pocket, but also good for the environment.

4

Yet I think we all realise that can only go so far. We have now emerged out of the darkness of the pandemic, and slowly but shortly the directive is that we have to fend for ourselves again. I don’t doubt some support remains, but I wouldn’t expect it to last forever. I think we are all living slightly differently now, and certainly in wake of food shortages during the first lockdown, I have seen much greater understanding 12

Exams: Less Stress

FREE ADVERT DESIGN FREE COPY WRITING

Why addressing exam stress, as a household, can help everyone involved. We all know the pressure our youngsters will be under over the coming weeks and months as the tension rises ahead of end-of-year exams, whatever the level. While revision schedules are great for the student involved, sometimes the stress can permeate throughout a household, whereby parents can often feel like the ones going through the process, albeit accompanied with a greater feeling of helplessness. Thankfully, there are a number of things guardians can help with so that the tension temperature of exam season is kept to a level where brilliant brains can achieve the best grades possible. 1. Monitor sleep Sleep is arguably the most important factor where exam revision is concerned, not just in the sense of getting an early

14

night and plenty of rest, but in the statistic that 80 per cent of teens lose between 2-4 hours of sleep each night due to work worries.

GET AHEAD OF YOUR COMPETITORS The Mirfield Word has repeat advertisers month on month Because it is working for them!

This can be a case of failing to fall asleep, experiencing broken sleep, or waking early and not being able to go back to sleep. Monitoring your student’s sleeping pattern means laying a platform for effective study. 2. Distractions Social media has become the biggest distraction for students in revision phase. Inadvertently, increased time spent on devices for learning can often translate into more time spent on social networks, with this ‘self-medicating’ ultimately becoming counterproductive. If you feel the distractions are too great, and want to take a firmer hand on things, you might consider installing parental controls so that certain websites – Twitter, Instagram and Facebook, for example – can be blocked, although do this in a consultative way rather than imposing a raft of restrictions that your son or daughter will

NO CHARGE FOR ADVERT CHANGES

probably only resent you for doing. 3. Share an interest From simple investment in the project such as knowing an exam timetable or suggesting different revision techniques or study guides, your youngster will appreciate the fact they aren’t alone in the process, while not feeling that your presence is adding extra stress and burden to what is potentially already a time of fraught nerves. 4. Be the calm one Staying cool, calm and collected is going to be the most reassuring thing that a parent can do for their child. Rehearse a set of calming lines, ideas and examples of how things almost always work out well. Remind them there are tens of thousands of other students going through the exact same process and emotions, and point out that exams aren’t the be all and end all - there are always alternative routes to the end goal.

If you’re searching out ideas for early-summer sheen, whilst remaining keen to protect and moisturise your face, here’s our on/off guide. What you put on Metallic eyeshadow and negative space eyeliner While the simplicity of watercolour eyeshadow has dominated so much of the beauty market in recent years, the look for this summer is statement effects – notably metallic shimmers, and negative space eyeliner. The former is self-explanatory; the latter uses a simple outline and lets your natural skin tone peek through underneath. Brow lamination They say the fashion industry will make centre-stage the very looks it was mocking a decade previously, and this certainly seems to be the case with brow lamination, which is set to be a major feature again this summer. Plumping up brows is nothing new, but using a chemical formulation to break down the bond between brows before

flicking them up for maximum accentuation is a trend that many didn’t see coming.

Tanning & Beauty

Glitter lips Since make-up artist Pat McGrath sent models out on the DKNY catwalk with lips that were painted, dusted with fine glitter then drenched in gloss, this trend has only gathered pace. Whether you like a little sparkle or a lot, it is a dynamic that will get you noticed, with now longer-lasting applications that are food and moisture resistant. Golden glow If colour isn’t your thing, you’ll be delighted to know that au naturel will also be a hot trend again this summer. For a youthful, dewy glow, start with a cream foundation and use a highlighter or bronzer to contour cheeks. Keep lips natural but finish with a dab of eye gloss – another must-have product for 2022. When you take it off This summer will test our skin in all the usual ways. When healthy

18

with moisture barrier intact, it’s glowing and plump and easy to care for; but once that barrier is damaged it can feel like nothing will repair it, and even products you once found nourishing now sting and burn. The secret to repair is through gentle nourishment and lipid replacement. Firstly, get back to basics. Simplify your routine with a gentle cream cleanser and avoid alcohol-based products and scrubs. Find a moisturiser that boosts ceramide production like Olay Regenerist 3 Point Super Age Defying Cream, or anything with omega oils. Rosehip oil is a great way to slowly start rebuilding your layer of protection and is best applied when your face is slightly damp to trap moisture. And when cleansing, use tepid water and try drinking green tea… and lots of water. In addition, eating lots of berries and oily fish will boost antioxidants, whilst reducing inflammation within the body.

Holiday Health Horrors The perfect pre-holiday routines and resolutions, for him and her. FOR HER Squats Stand with your feet shoulderwidth apart, feet facing forwards and hands stretched out in front. Lower yourself by bending your knees as if you were preparing to sit on a chair. Go down as far as feels comfortable, aiming to get your thighs parallel to the floor. Slowly rise up to the starting position and repeat eight to ten times. Lunges Standing with your feet together, take a step forward with your right leg. Slowly bend the knees until both legs are nearly at right angles. Your right knee should not extend over your toes and your left knee should not touch the floor. Push back up to the starting position. Repeat eight to ten times before switching legs. and knees, with your knees under your hips and your hands under your shoulders. Keeping your right leg bent at 90 degrees, raise your knee as high as you can by squeezing your buttocks. Lower to the starting position and repeat eight to ten times with each leg. Bridges Lie on your back with your knees bent and heels close to your bottom. Your feet should be shoulder-width apart and flat on the floor. Raise your hips to create a straight line from your knees to your shoulders. As you come up, tighten your abdominals and buttocks. Lower yourself gently to the starting position and repeat eight to ten times. --FOR HIM Eat protein for breakfast If you’ve become so busy that the first meal of the day consists of a black coffee on the run, you’re doing your body a massive disservice. Eating breakfast jumpstarts your metabolism and keeps your energy high all day. Go for something highcalorie like eggs. High in metabolismboosting protein, they’re also the best dietary source of choline, a B vitamin.

Do interval training Starved for time? Interval training not only fits into your life, it’s also incredibly effective – helping you to shed pounds, increase your metabolism, improve your cholesterol profile and improve insulin sensitivity. Try a HIIT class (High Intensity Interval Training) at the gym, or turn your favourite aerobic exercise (running, biking, even walking) into an interval workout by adding periods of intense speed (start with 3060secs).

Here at Brief Encounter you will be greeted with a warm welcome and an abundance of Brand Choices in lingerie, sports, nursing, mastectomy, breast forms, shapewear, swimwear and nightwear. Get the good fats Paradoxically, to burn more fat you need to eat more of it, but only the good kind. So eschew white carbs like pasta and bread and fill your belly with healthy fats like real butter, coconut oil, nuts and avocado. Lift heavy weights Lifting heavy weights can actually boost your metabolism and speed up weight loss. Compound lifts like squats and deadlifts burn the most post-workout calories, but any heavy weight training will have a positive effect.

Male Manicures

BOUNCE BACK

Manicures and pedicures for men are here. It’s estimated that 20% of men now undertake regular manicure and pedicure sessions – that’s a ten-fold increase over the past decade; and it’s a trend that’s continuing to grow. Here’s why treatments are becoming so popular: 1. They improve your hygiene Ever thought about what lurks beneath your toenails? Or the last time you properly scrubbed the soles of your feet? Manicurists are trained professionals who know how to painlessly get all the deeprooted grime out from under your nails. They’ll also remove dead skin meaning there are fewer places for bacteria to thrive. 2. They have health benefits If you suffer from ingrowing toenails, you’ll know that prevention is better than cure. Pedicurists know how to neatly cut nails so that they don’t become ingrown. Also, removing dead skin keeps calluses, bunions and corns at bay. 3. It actually feels really good Your feet have it tough, and it stands to reason that a

soothing treatment, invigorating massage and cooling gels are going to feel wonderful. But the happiness doesn’t end at your ankles, as stimulating your ‘plates of meat’ boosts your bodies circulation and is stressbusting too. 4. Men undertake tougher physical routines If anyone should be looking to repair and revive digits and toes, it is men. Generally speaking, the female of the species has the less physically demanding tasks, so men should be the ones to step forward, keen to work salvation into hands and feet. 5. Ladies love well-groomed men If you want to make a good first impression when you shake someone’s hand, then a manicure is going to serve you well. The perception that women don’t notice when a man has rough, calloused hands and dirty nails is a false one; and while a certain amount of ruggedness can certainly be attractive, the

Gordon Ramsay’s Beef Wellington Introduction This beef wellington looks impressive, but it’s actually a lot easier to do than it might appear. Using a mix of simple ingredients, like puff pastry and prime beef fillet, this wellington can be used to replace the traditional main in a Sunday roast, or for any special occasion. Served alongside sautéed potatoes and wilted baby gem lettuce – with classic mustard vinaigrette making a great dressing – this is a hearty, rustic dish that the whole family can tuck into.

Ingredients (serves 4) • 400g flat cap mushrooms, roughly chopped • sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

Top Tips To keep the pastry light and crisp, wrap the beef and mushrooms in a layer of Parma ham to shield the pastry from moisture and prevent it from becoming soggy.

Carving at the table can bring everyone together, and it’s hard to go wrong with tender beef, juicy and sear in the hot pan mushrooms and mustard.

for 30 secs only on each side. (You don’t want to cook it at this stage, just colour it). Remove the beef from the pan and leave to cool, then brush all over with the mustard.

• olive oil, for cooking • 750g piece of prime beef fillet • 1-2tbsp English mustard • 6-8 slices of Parma ham • 500g ready-made puff pastry • flour, to dust • 2 egg yolks, beaten

Method 1. Put the mushrooms into a food processor with some seasoning and pulse to a rough paste. Scrape the paste into a pan and cook over a high heat for about 10 mins, tossing frequently, to cook out the moisture from the mushrooms. Spread out on a plate to cool. 2. Heat a frying pan and add a little olive oil. Season the beef 26

3. Lay a sheet of cling film on a work surface and arrange the Parma ham slices on it, in slightly overlapping rows. With a palette knife, spread the mushroom paste over the ham, then place the seared beef fillet in the middle. Keeping a tight hold of the cling film from the edge, neatly roll the Parma ham and mushrooms around the beef to form a tight barrel shape. Twist the ends of the cling film to secure. Chill for 1520 mins to allow the beef to set and keep its shape. 4. Roll out the puff pastry on a floured surface to a large rectangle, the thickness of a £1 coin. Remove the cling film from the beef, then lay in the

centre. Brush the surrounding pastry with egg yolk. Fold the ends over, then wrap the pastry around the beef, cutting off any excess. Turn over so the seam is underneath, and place on a baking sheet. Brush over all the pastry with egg and chill for about 15 mins to let the pastry rest. 5. Heat the oven to 200°C, 400°F, gas mark 6. Lightly score the pastry at 1cm intervals and glaze again with beaten egg yolk. Bake for 20 minutes, then lower the oven setting to 180°C, 350°F, gas mark 4 and cook for another 15 mins. Allow to rest for 10-15 mins before slicing and serving with the side dishes of your choice. The beef should still be pink in the centre when you serve it.

Hugh FearnleyWhittingstall’s Pear & Almond Cake Introduction This soft, dense, almondy cake can be served warm for pudding with lashings of cream, or cold with a cup of tea or coffee. Firm Conference pears should work a treat here.

Method 1. Preheat the oven to 170°C/325°F/gas mark 3. Grease a 20cm diameter, springform cake tin and line the base with baking parchment. 2. Put a saucepan over a medium heat and add 25g of the butter. When it’s sizzling, add a tablespoon of sugar and stir until it dissolves. Add the pear quarters and fry in the buttery caramel for five to ten minutes, until they start to brown and soften (the time taken will vary greatly, depending on how ripe the pears are). Put to one side to cool a little.

3. Put the remaining butter and sugar in a mixing bowl and cream together until light and fluffy. Beat in the two eggs, one at a time. Whizz the whole blanched almonds (if using) in a food processor for about a minute, to grind them. Tip them into the cake batter (or add the readyground almonds), then sift in the self-raising flour and fold in gently. Scrape the mixture into the prepared tin. Arrange the pieces of pear on top of the cake.

4. Bake for about 45 minutes, or until a knife pushed into the centre comes out clean. Place the tin on a wire rack to cool. Serve warm or cold.

Ingredients (serves 6) • 175g unsalted butter, softened • 125g caster sugar, plus 1 tbsp • 3 pears, firm but not too hard, peeled, cored and quartered • 2 eggs • 75g whole blanched almonds or ground almonds • 75g self-raising flour

Greenfingers… the Alan Titchmarsh column He’s a brilliant presenter, accomplished gardener, talented novelist and all-round horticultural inspiration. This month, Alan Titchmarsh talks about the impact his iconic Ground Force series had on the nation. I get asked a lot about Ground Force, the TV programme I fronted for five years from 1997, and the impact it made on gardening, as a whole. To be honest, I don’t like to talk up my achievements too much, but I will admit this was one of the real successes I will always look back on with fondness. That’s not so much for any personal reasons, and I certainly don’t think my horticultural knowledge was called on in the same way it has been with other gardening shows I’ve done over the years. Instead, the pride I have for Ground Force stems from a place where we managed to start something of an outdoors revolution. Not only were we at the forefront of a new brand of reality TV (that wasn’t a talent show or a singing contest). It was in people’s homes, in their 36

lives, and focused on the idea that people could come together from all over to make a difference. All the people involved in Ground Force came from different backgrounds and offered very different ideas in the process of transforming a chosen family’s back garden, but it worked. My role was probably one of the easiest – almost just an anchor man pulling the whole thing

together, however clumsily! The show’s success provoked a whole raft of other home reality programmes where people’s dreams came true… usually. And I say that on the basis of some of the awkward transformations Changing Rooms embarked on! Yet for the most part, this brand of

garden without feeling conditioned to keep it in a certain way. Life isn’t like that – it evolves, as do our outside spaces, and we should let it.

Everything changes and everything comes to an end eventually, as did Ground Force itself! Accept the fact nature and time will both do their thing, but enjoy each moment along the way.

At the heart of it is exploring human nature and putting ordinary people in extraordinary situations, and seeing how they react. Everyone who agrees to take part is looking for something, and the lucky ones are the ones who find it and know when they have found it. After all, our gardens will never be absolutely perfect places – nature sees to that – but Ground Force certainly got them close to that for a time. As the TV crews departed, I would always suggest to the homeowners they should just sit in or look out over their

Given the brush-off We are a local, family run business

It’s 125 years since the first dustpan and brush was patented by author and inventor Lloyd Ray. While the product has evolved, its key elements have remained suitably true to its origins. To celebrate this anniversary, we look at some of the best on the market.

Environmentally friendly Ecovibe Plastic-Free Dustpan & Brush (around £20) The first thing you may notice about this Ecovibe set is the punchy price tag, but explore further and you’ll find a solid wooden handle, high-quality bristled brush and a sturdy steel bottom. Luxury Eldvarm Shovel & Brush Set (around £180) The notion of a luxury dustpan and brush might seem like a contradiction in terms, though this walnut-styled set, primarily designed for sweeping up around the fireplace after a night on the coals, can be used in other places around the home, and is immaculately presented. Jason and Scott have years of experience in the resin industry between them and currently run an award-winning business next door to Moli, supplying resin materials up and down the country. Scott, operations director at Moli, said: “We are pleased to finally open our door to customers and are delighted that we chose a unit in Huddersfield to call Moli’s home. “We look forward to welcoming customers over the

next few months and years to come.” Managing director Jason said: “Moli is on an ambitious growth path over the next 2-3 years despite the fact that the global pandemic has slightly delayed our plans and presented us with some challenges. However, in some cases, the pandemic also has positively altered the way we do business. “What is extremely satisfying is that Scott and I along with the whole team are now in a position to be able to open a new business and offer customers the opportunity to plan and design their dream resin driveways, pathways and patios.

“We are very excited about the new office opening in Huddersfield, a community we believe is in a good vibrant location and is connected well to the surrounding areas. “Moli will no doubt offer an engaging office environment and install high-quality resin surfaces, a market opportunity that we know is currently in high demand.” Resin bound is the UK’s fastest-growing permeable paving system, which allows

for water to naturally pass through its surface so it can be safely drained away through the sub-base. It has become increasingly popular with homeowners because new or replacement permeable driveways do not require planning permission, regardless of their size. Resin driveways, pathways and patios are not only a stylish solution but also a practical one. The resin used by Moli is produced with the latest polymer technology,

which produces stronger bonds, giving people a resilient and robust surface that boasts longevity and durability. Moli’s resin bound system comes with a 10-year guarantee to give its customers peace of mind so they can feel confident in the quality of their new resin surface. Lies and Fibs

Born Free

The psychology behind the little white lies we tell our children, and why you need to be careful what you say!

Exciting outdoor activities that the whole family can find joy in as spring beckons us back into nature.

Ask any parent - keeping your young ones in check is a tough task. And yet, the process is often made considerably easier with clever use of some truthbending.

It’s the season where we can approach the outdoors with confidence – where a flicker of the curtains doesn’t bring about nervous shudders and mental images of trudging across Antarctica.

A recent study found that a parent will tell over 3,000 fibs throughout the process of elevating their child into adulthood, either in protecting them from the truth, in not knowing an answer, or just wanting a quiet life! Here are some classic little white lies that every parent will be able to relate to: - “If the wind blows, you’ll stay like that” – an effective way to stop kids pulling silly faces - “If you don’t brush your teeth, they’ll all fall out” – perfect dental hygiene ploy - “Your eyes will go square” – the classic incentive to move away from the telly and tablets - “Eat your greens or you won’t grow up strong” – a

produce-themed exaggeration - “Unless you share, you’ll have no friends” – harsh but (un)fair, and probably untrue - “When the ice cream van plays his tune, it means he’s run out” – mean, just mean! Psychology and imagination Yet the psychology behind telling lies and fibs runs much deeper. Firstly, it’s not a single-direction process, so parents needn’t necessarily feel bad about the little white lies they tell their children. Those same children, from the age of two, will invent everything from imaginary friends to tales of superhero powers as they go

about seeking fun and stimulation in the world, and the consequences of what they do. The lies they tell are very often an expression of an active imagination, and in many ways, we shouldn’t always seek to suppress these. Ages away Finally, psychologists believe that around the age of eight kids stop believing everything they are told… probably because so many of those naysayer naughties never came true in the first place! They have a stronger awareness of the power of lying and will do it themselves out of selfish gain or so as not to land themselves in trouble, whereas previously it was often a route to creativity, or simply they were saying the thing they thought a parent wanted to hear, even if that wasn’t the truth.

Family time, anywhere, is important and valuable, but around nature, and when exploring our surroundings whilst letting the benefits of fresh air immerse our bodies and minds, it can provide some of the very best and most valuable experiences. Here are six suggestions that will be guaranteed to satisfy enthusiastic young minds. Foraging Foraging is a wonderful opportunity to explore the countryside. Even if you don’t eat anything that you find, foraging still opens young minds to the possibility of self-sustainable living and an appreciation of food in its natural setting. There are also an abundance of ‘pick your own’ farms in the UK, which evades the possibility of eating

berries or mushrooms that are not meant for consumption. Outdoor arts and craft Whether gathering shells, pinecones and leaves to create art at home, giving them use of a camera to photograph animals and plants, or even just arming the kids with a plain notebook and some pencils to capture their surroundings, there are many ways in which you can make time outdoors that bit more stimulating for young minds. Treasure hunting Using GPS and a dedicated smartphone app, Geocaching is essentially a global treasure hunt for ‘caches’ – small waterproof containers that are hidden outdoors. Using location coordinates and clues, hunters must hunt out these concealed vessels and upon finding them, either write their name and date of discovery or (in the case of larger caches) swap the trinket within for something else. Crabbing or bug hunting Those lucky enough to live near the seaside or a suitable body of water will want to try crabbing. Using

a line and bait – crabs love bacon! – you can reel in your catch and place it in a bucket for closer inspection before returning it to its briny haven. If you’ve got no water nearby but lots of greenspace, simply go on a bug hunt instead, cataloguing any minibeasts you encounter. Hiking Britain has an abundance of beautiful countryside and you can find plenty of walks to suit your ability in either a guidebook of your local area, or online. It’s always worth having a destination in mind… like a picturesque village or a country pub for much-needed libation, or even a secluded place to sit and eat a picnic. Discovering From castle and monastery ruins, iron age encampments and even disused railway lines, open up your map, see what’s around you, and venture out to explore off the beaten track.

A Design for Life… The Kevin McCloud Column

Lanterns are a fantastic way to instantly add a touch of class, whether Scandinavian-style tin or mosaic Moroccan glass, while outdoor candles in buckets are a budget option, and anything with citronella scent will also deter bugs.

Designer, writer and television presenter, Kevin McCloud leapt into our consciousness with his vastly successful Grand Designs show on Channel 4. This month, the affable architectural business owner talks about his background running a lighting design company.

I can say that from personal experience, as when I got my break in television, I was running a lighting design company; and certainly in a business sense, life hadn’t been as rewarding as I would have hoped.

It’s funny how life has a way of guiding you in certain directions. I think most of us who have bought or rented a house have, at some point, considered the factors that brought us to that particular place at that particular time.

My work on Grand Designs and a few other projects has never taken me away from a passion for styling businesses or projects that offer genuine change or ingenuity. That excites me, but I’m aware you can’t get it right every time, and it may cost you a few hundred grand to realise that!

That ‘sliding doors’ moment often presents us with cherished life memories that we can’t imagine being without, and these chance meetings or events are all part of the fabric of who we are and where we end up.

I do look back on the Nineties with fondness. Running a lighting design company isn’t easy, but I always carried with me a driving passion for the subject, so even the difficult days had light shone on them, so to speak! I’m not the expert I once was when it comes to lighting, as now my expertise is spread rather more across wholeof-whole elements, but I do think any outdoor

the day, then transform into glimmering jewels at night. space can look absolutely spectacular with garden lights. It’s something that’s only really become commonplace over the past couple of decades, thanks in no small part to some very cost-effective imports from abroad. I love lights that resemble fireflies dancing on your rose bushes, or glowering lamps that mimic the dying embers of the barbeque as the warm night stretches out before you, glass of rosé in hand. Fairy lights are an obvious and easy choice to brighten up an outdoor space; just make sure they are the waterproof kind purchased from a garden centre, not leftovers from the Christmas tree.

If you’re the kind of person who opts for a fire pit over a fancy gas barbecue, there’s a good chance you’ll want your outdoor decorations to be equally primal.

Scratches and scrapes

01924 490356 www.howarthsgarage.co.uk HowarthsGarage Units 245 & 247, Ashley Ind. Estate, Huddersfield Road, Mirfield, WF14 9DL

Five road features that are causing abrasions to your car without you knowing it. 1. Weather You may consider that weather is one thing that’s seemingly unavoidable when you run a car, but keeping it out of the elements (either in a garage or covered) can actually prolong your paintwork lifespan by a considerable amount. That’s because rainfall in coastal areas can carry high salt levels, which leave awkward and challenging water stains; while excessive sun may cause paintwork to fade and look worn. 2. Cleaning techniques It may always seem like a good idea to keep paintwork looking pristine, but there are number of abrasive cleaning techniques that, in the long-term, will do your prized possession more harm than good. These include the use of inappropriate brushes and jet

wash tools, as well taking your car to professional washers who do not wash grit away from the floor between each vehicle. And if you’re cleaning it yourself, check there is no loose dirt on the cloth you’re using. 3. Bird poo Removing any cemented animal matter or dead bugs from your car, as soon as possible, is a must - that’s because the acidic element of this sickly white stuff eats away at your car paintwork with genuine ferocity. Keep a microfibre cloth close so you can wipe away any nasties soon after they arrive. 4. Curbs and pavements It sounds obvious, but a variety of scrapes, particularly on front and back bumpers, as well as alloy wheels, will instantly make your car look like something out of an old-school Top Gear road trip. Consider spatial awareness and overcompensate for spaces and angles whenever

66

you are parking – better to consideration that it reflects navigate a way into a space in two attempts, than achieve it in one but be left with a nasty abrasion as reward for your speedy efforts! Consider how closely you park to other vehicles as well. You might justifiably be careful and car fleets for that same reason considerate when it comes to opening the door gently so as not to touch the car next door or brushing against a neighbouring wingmirror, but that doesn’t mean other road users carry with them quite the same sense of moral duty! 5. Trees and branches Hugging the curb may seem like a good idea when you have a car coming towards you, but have you factored in tree, bush, hedge or branch material that juts into the road? Streaks down the sides of cars can often be caused by getting too close to curb-side plant matter; on some occasions it may be better to wait and let another car through.

Pet Names THE HIDDEN JEWEL EMPORIUM

The most popular and most puzzling pet names in 2022. While the pet market has never been more buoyant in the UK, it seems neither has our ability to label our loved ones with popular and puzzling names in equal measure. Research gathered over the past five years from a variety of sources suggests that while trends come and go, and the naming of pets can often reflect the film stars, musicians and fashionistas of the era, the majority of names chosen for our pets are generic to the type of animal. Dogs The most popular dog names all revolve around the traditional, happy-go-lucky and cute echoes of having a pet in the home. Popular names Bella, Charlie, Luna, Lucy, Max and Bailey all feature high up on lists, with the likes of Cooper, Daisy, Sadie and Molly also ranking as popular.

Cats As far as felines go, it can be difficult to select a name that reflects this animal’s classic juxtaposition – snuggly and needy one minute, antisocial and fiercely independent the next! Popular names Oliver, Bella, Simba, Chloe, Luna, Max, Lucy, Lily, Nala and Sophie all rank highly. Unusual names For the more unusual tags, try Tucker, Lulu or Winston. And again, for the clever clogs (or should that be claws), try KittyPurry, Harry Pawtter, or even Mr Meowgi. Ouch. Hamsters Low maintenance and incredibly tame, hamsters are loveable pets good for all ages, and while you might be happy to give them one of the UK’s most popular names,

Far-flung action

Boost your memory

This month, a voyage back into the world of fiction, with a selection of books that can whisk us away to far-off places Book Lovers by Emily Henry (May 3rd) Book Lovers comes from the pen of New York Times bestselling author Emily Henry, and follows the tale of Nora Stephens, who has a life ensconced in books. She has read them all, but the only people Nora is a heroine for are her clients and beloved little sister Libby. That’s why she agrees to go to Sunshine Falls for the month of August when Libby begs her for a sisters’ trip away. With visions of a small-town transformation for Nora, who she’s convinced needs to become the heroine in her own story, she encounters not picnics in meadows, but Charlie Lastra, a bookish brooding editor from back in the city. It would be a meet-cute if not for the fact that they’ve met many times and it’s never been cute.

Four exercises that will boost memory and protect wellbeing.

A Lady’s Guide to Fortune Hunting by Sophie Irwin (May 12th) A Lady’s Guide to Fortune Hunting is a smart tome from Sophie Irwin – a debut novel from the London-based author that combines intelligence with craft.

Your brain may not in fact be a muscle, but it does work in much the same way as those in your body – the harder you work it, the stronger it gets and the better it performs. Here are four exercises that you can carry out over a four-week period – try them and see if you start noticing the results. Exercise 1: Sleep treat Just as you’re ready to go to sleep, think over what you did that day from the time you got up until you got into bed. Follow your entire day step-by-step, visualising each and every step.

In the plot, lead character Kitty Talbot needs a fortune. Or rather, she needs a husband who has a fortune. This is 1818 after all, and only men have the privilege of seeking their own riches. With only 12 weeks until the bailiffs call, launching herself into London society is the only avenue open to her, and Kitty must use every ounce of cunning and ingenuity she possesses to climb the ranks. Can she secure a fortune and save her sisters from poverty? There is not a day to lose and no one – not even a lord – will stand in her way...

“After spending most of my teenage years buried in romance novels, I always wanted to write one myself,” Emezi told Entertainment Weekly in a recent interview. “You Made a Fool of Death with Your Beauty is a love letter to the brave choices we make in the name of love, the costs we pay for it, and the glory of the reward at the end.”

Don’t worry if in the beginning you can’t remember much detail – you’ll probably move rapidly from task to task or think of the day in larger, broader sections. It’s important to really try to slow down and remember as much as you can, and with time and practice, you will soon start to notice significant improvement in your recall of events and details.

Exercise 2: Map attack On a piece of paper draw a small square for where you live, and begin to add in roads around you. Gradually build a map of your square mile until you reach the edge of the paper. This is a great exercise as it promotes an ability to picture an environment, factoring in scale and perspective, and boosting rapid recall of memories attached to places. Compare side-by-side to a real map and see what you included and missed. Exercise 3: Non-dominant hand Testing the efficiency of tasks with your ‘wrong’ hand is a great way to get brain activity increasing as it aims to focus harder and find solutions to what are, in fact, regular jobs. Moving your brain out of its comfort zone in this way is a great way to stimulate it, all the while encouraging it to

reach out further in the pursuit of other tasks, at other times. Exercise 4: Socialising Perhaps the most satisfying task of them all! Experts say the brain is at its most challenged when in a social or party situation, particularly when around strangers. In simple terms, the more we interrelate with others, the better. How brain exercises help you: • They help improve your memory • They aid your ability to visualise things • They help improve your concentration • They boost perceptiveness at every point throughout the day • They improve powers of observation • They reduce stress • They help us live in the moment • They may well result in you falling asleep faster because your mind is exercised

The New School Rules

Ferrari’s Diamond Design

Rab Butler’s landmark education reforms, from 75 years ago. The 1944 Education Act was driven forward by a young MP, Rab Butler. Even in the extremely challenging post-war era, the Conservative strove to arrest the clear issues in the system, although it would be another three years, in 1947, before one of the main pillars of his plan came into effect – namely the raising of school-leaving age to 15.

It was 75 years ago, in 1947, that the very first Ferrari hit the streets; and while in the time since various manufacturers and designers have looked to emulate the Prancing Horse’s mould of motoring magnificence, very few have been able to. As iconic a sight as you will find on road and racetrack, to celebrate the company’s milestone, we look back on the history of Italy’s most prestigious automotive manufacturer. The legendary Enzo Ferrari (1898-1988) began his motoring career as an Alfa Romeo driver in 1924, but within five years he had gone on to found the Scuderia Ferrari – which assisted gentlemen drivers in racing cars – in his hometown of Modena. In 1938, Alfa Romeo brought the Scuderia under its control, but Ferrari disagreed with the move and left in 1939 to set up his own racing company. Under the terms of the split from Alfa, Enzo was unable to use his own name on his race cars until years later. Horsepower The soon-to-be-iconic Cavallino Rampante (prancing horse) was adopted from the emblem of Italian WW2 fighter ace Francesco Baracca, who painted the design on his

A winning formula The first Ferrari driver to claim the Formula One World Championship was Alberto Ascari, taking the top spot in 1952. Scuderia Ferrari has produced the most championshipwinning drivers – 15 – since Ascari’s maiden victory. The most famous of these include Niki Lauda, Michael Schumacher – who won

plane. Enzo Ferrari was given permission to use the design from Baracca’s mother, who believed it would bring the car manufacturer good luck. Ferrari placed the black horse on a canary yellow background (the colour of Modena) and topped it with the tricolour of Italy. The rest, as they say, is history. The first Ferrari The first racing car to bear the Ferrari moniker was the 12-cylinder 1.5-litre Tipo 125, which was released in 1947. Just two models of this original car were created, neither of which exist today.

75 years this month, offered longevity and security to young people, as well as driving a sense of restoration and repair in our post-war human wealth, as a country, in much the same way as reconstruction of homes and realignment of the economy was also striven to mend after so many years of struggle.

As well as a rise in school-leaving age, the

five consecutive titles – and Kimi Raikkonen. Ferrari also holds the top spot when it comes to the Constructor’s Championships, with 16 victories from 1961-2008, and 239 F1 race victories in total. The 200 Club The Ferrari F40 was the last car approved for production by Enzo Ferrari himself, and was the first road car to break the 200mph barrier. The new breed of Ferraris The latest and most ambitious vehicles to roll off the company’s production line have been the Ferrari LaFerrari and Roma models – the former is equipped with an F1-derived hybrid solution that combines an electric motor capable of producing over 150 CV with the most powerful version of Ferrari’s classic V12.

1944 Education Act also laid the foundations for a move to mixed classes, significant curriculum changes, and a necessity for pupils to gain qualifications and achieve grades. Few would suppose that our education system in 2022 is perfect, but to look at the landscape from the eyes of Rab Butler and the commencement of changes, some 75 years ago, shows just how far we have come.

which raised his fitness level to “beyond what I thought was possible.”

He’s an acclaimed actor, DJ and director, so naturally Idris Elba needs to stay in shape to keep up with his relentless schedule. Not one to do things by halves however, the charming 49-year-old reveals why no challenge will ever be big enough. Idris Elba wants his epitaph to read: “This guy reminds me of the things that I want to be doing but I’ve not done yet - because he never sat still.” It also happens to be his life motto and explains his powerful and pressing desire to grab life by the throat and pack as much as he can into his time here. “I’m someone who has a hard time staying still, I’m always in a restless state,” Elba admits. “People often have dreams and desires but wind up just thinking about them instead of going out and doing them. I need to feel like I’m always moving forward and doing as much as I can instead of just wondering about it. That’s why I love throwing myself into as many different characters and stories as I can and living out

80

The experience came with other valuable lessons, as the 6’2” TV titan soon realised that were his body to survive six hours of training a day he would have to change his eating habits considerably, which previously consisted of pasta, rice and beer. “I feel I have much more energy now eating mainly fish, chicken, lots of fresh vegetables and salads… things like that,” he says.

different adventures. You just need the will to go out and do it!” That logic explains why the Londonborn star continues to tread a varied and experimental path with the choices he makes. From TV drama, with the perennially successful Luther, which he is currently filming and will return this year, along with outward bound movie Beast, last year’s spectacular Suicide Squad, and even animated voiceover work in the new Sonic the Hedgehog movie; if a project excites him, he’ll do it, and to hell with the critics. And while he is certainly ambitious with his onscreen endeavours, when not on film sets the handsome Hackney native loves to stare danger square in the face. For his 2015 Discovery channel show, Idris Elba: No Limits, he took part in drag racing, broke a land speed record, and performed a series of stunts at the Coventry Airbase Airshow. For most, that would be enough peril for one lifetime,

“I was over-confident in thinking that I could eat the way I always did and still train like a boxer. And yet I see it as a valuable lesson, because I want to preserve the current version of me, not let it fade away as I get older.

but the insatiable star took things even further when he stepped into the ring as a professional kickboxer. “Some guys want to be toned or want to jog for miles, but my ultimate fitness goal is to be fight-ready. If I stepped into the ring, could I go toe-to-toe for five rounds? That’s what I strove for. That’s what I consider fit. I wanted to know that if I was being wrestled to the ground, would I have the strength to fight a man off,” he explains fervently.

“That’s a big deal for me because, while I don’t fear getting old, I certainly don’t want to give in to it. I feel I still have a lot more to give – professionally, physically, mentally – and I think all men of my age and older should believe the door remains open to achieve whatever they want. “You’re only here once… so prolong it!”

4

When it came to the actual fighting – as chronicled in Idris Elba: Fighter – Elba ended up outdone by younger, smaller, and much more skilled fighters. It was an experience he described as “soul destroying”, but even as he came to accept that his lofty ambitions were perhaps not so easy to manifest in real life, the upbeat actor has no regrets about enduring the gruelling 12-month kickboxing and mixed martial arts training

next project, the next setting; yet when I get there, I’m in it all of a few minutes before plotting another step elsewhere. “I’m not good at taking praise. It feels very awkward to me and every time someone fawns over my work I can’t help but think there are millions of people all across the country doing jobs that are infinitely more important than mine.

“I think we all move through various stages in our lives and the worst thing you can ever do is stay in the same space continually. I’m one of those curious characters who takes those sorts of things to extremes – I yearn for the

Simple and effective ways in which you can make your home more eco-friendly. Low Flow showerhead Attachable showerheads can come in at under a tenner, but reduce water usage by up to 75 per cent, whilst still enabling a relaxing, reviving experience. These can save you up to £200 a year, meaning you’ll have earned your money back in the first month! Coffee pod conflict Most of us throw away plastic coffee pod outers into regular waste. Manufacturers are now making a concerted move to recycle these through the post. Alternatively, go back to ‘ground’ level by swapping your pod dispenser for a cafetiere. Steel straws Forget dated plastic or horribly flimsy paper versions, only a steel straw - reusable thousands of times - will really do when it comes to

Recycled pens Pilot’s B2P pens are made from old water bottles, with 80% of the company’s range comprised of recycled plastic parts. They’re also making a big push on replacing ink cartridges. Cotton pads for flannels Instead of using cotton pads to remove make-up at the end of each day, simply use a dedicated, soft flannel, which can be washed and reused again and again. Energy-saving power switches Even turned-off appliances still draw energy from the plug when

they’re switched to ‘off’. The phenomenon is known as ‘phantom load’ or ‘vampire energy’. The biggest culprits are TVs, games consoles and music systems, swiftly followed by home office equipment, kitchen appliances and phone chargers, so unplug completely, or install an energy-saving power switch, which will eliminate the pull.

Feeling Peaky? The Peak District National Park was established in 1951, and each year welcomes an estimated 14 million visitors. It stretches across the borders of five counties, showcasing over 1,600 miles of walking routes, and a lot more. Natural world Outward bound pursuits, hiking routes and picture-perfect villages nestle into stunning geology. Whether on foot or in your vehicle, the green and grey wilderness offers a wholesome connection with the majesty of Mother Nature. Below ground If you’re willing to delve below the surface, the Peak District’s caving network is something to be admired. Organised caving and potholing experiences reveal the mysteries of thousands of years, with passageways, streams and chambers testing physical durability and mental strength in equal measure. History From the resplendent and regal

Chatsworth House (where large parts of the film Pride & Prejudice were filmed) to museums, temples and mills, the history and heritage of what in some places was a heavily industrial area provides a remarkable step back in time to rather simpler ways, long departed. Food & drink The Peak District’s connectivity is what gives its pubs, bars, restaurants and cafes a rich combination of southern and northern flavours. The trend for gastro and high-end dining in remote converted cottages has given the area a real edge beyond its existing array of incredible pubs

and solid brewing tradition. Accommodation The area caters for every brand of visitor, with five-star hotels and spas, elegant guesthouses, simple Airbnbs, right through to stylish riverside campsites that connect you immediately with rustic, countryside pleasures.

Five Alive 5G network coverage – where we’re at, and what it means for you. Connectivity until now For a few years now, 4G coverage has enabled us to access the web, download videos and, for the most part, connect with all the things we can when out and about. Prior to this, 3G connectivity rarely meant internet connections of more than 20Mbps (megabits per second), which would imply long waits for content. At 4G, that speed is up to 100Mbps. Connectivity going forward While most of us are perfectly satisfied with 4G speeds, the advent of 5G is set to transform what we access and where. It utilises a new digital system for transforming bytes – data units – over air, so connectivity is 10 times as fast. This means much higher radio frequencies which transfer exponentially more data over

the air for faster speeds, reduced congestion and lower latency, which is the delay before a transfer of data begins following an instruction. What’s more, the new interface uses millimetre wave spectrum, which enables more devices to be used within the same geographic area. In the past, on 4G, this would be around 4,000 devices per square kilometre, whereas 5G will support over a million. That’s why the technology has been rolled out specifically in city locations, where more demand necessitates a greater service platform. What does it mean? The advent of 5G will make live streaming and downloading of HD video while out and about easy, with no drop-outs or buffering. People may also use a 5G WIFI router instead of paying for in-home broadband, and in business terms, it will be the catalyst for connecting humans and machines together on an

unprecedented scale. Why is the rollout so slow? The adopting of the millimetre waves, which the 5G network is built on, comes with one drawback – the higher frequency means waves don’t travel as they did over 4G. This means a smaller geographical range, hence the installation of huge quantities of nodes for maintaining the signal, and this has ultimately made the rollout slow. How connected are we? At present, the number of towns and cities with 5G connectivity is almost up to a hundred, and the majority of UK device users are expected to be able to access 5G coverage by the end of 2022. What else? You will need a 5G-enabled mobile phone in order to access the technology. Manufacturers have been producing equipped models for a couple of years now, and while early 5G handsets were expensive, the price is now coming down.

Super 6? The digital music station that celebrates two decades of alternative music taste. BBC 6 Music’s appeal is in its versatility and diversity. Across almost every show, listeners are treated to an array of sounds, influences and genres, swaying almost apologetically between reggae and soul in one segment, through to indie and hard rock in another, with dance, ambient and even classical filtering following on.

2002 and was the first new BBC station to come to the public in 32 years. The station opened with a show from Phill Jupitus, and showcased a range of DJs, a number of whom are still present, including Stuart Maconie, Gideon Coe, Chris Hawkins and Craig Charles.

Its presenters represent a seductive cross-section of backgrounds, influences and eras, and such an appreciation of music as a whole – and the stories behind the songs and the sounds – is what has kept listeners tuned in.

While listener figures now sustain themselves around the two million mark, numbers were significantly lower in the first decade of the new Millennium, leading to suggestions the station may close.

6 Music launched on March 11th

The reaction from the radiolistening public proved otherwise

– a Facebook group backed by the hashtag #SaveBBC6Music saw 180,000 fans rally behind the cause. The corporation quickly relented in their plans, and a decade on BBC 6 Music stands as a successful, innovative and positive force that consistently bucks the trend. The corporation’s decision to persist with one of its most alternative projects, is arguably one of its shrewdest.

Armed and dangerous Amidst the chaos of lockdown and the apparent partial paralysis of the movie industry, the rise and rise of Ana de Armas has continued almost unnoticed. Following her portrayal of Paloma in the 25th Bond movie, No Time to Die, the 33-year-old now takes on the role of Marilyn Monroe in the Netflix pseudobiopic Blonde. “What I found is that the physical aspects of playing someone that iconic are only really half of it. I know people’s first thought is how you look and how you sound, but for me it was something so much deeper than that – it was a real revision and cleansing of my perception of her. That was a much bigger thing to contemplate and to challenge me.

“Marilyn is obviously a generational icon and it’s so important that she comes across in a way that is appropriate; so while that means pressure, I realise it is also a real opportunity to celebrate an incredible person. “Her life is a long way from where I came up. Growing up in Cuba was difficult - we had food rationing, fuel shortages and electricity blackouts. They were difficult days for my family and our lives were patterned by the uncertainty of not knowing when things would become easier. “We didn’t even have internet access, so it was only when I went

to the National Theatre School in Havana at 18 that I discovered this whole world out there. As soon as I found that, I knew all I wanted to do was explore the world, and my own potential, of course.”
