Pakistan Taliban splits into factions

A key faction of the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) announced Wednesday that it was splitting from the militant outfit following bloody clashes with a rival group, reported by Dawn. The break-away faction belongs to the Mehsud tribe, widely considered the most important of the various groups that comprise the umbrella TTP which has fought the Pakistani government since 2007. Azam Tariq, a spokesman for the group, said the breakaway faction would be lead by Khalid Mehsud, famously known by the name of Khan Said alias Sajna.

“We announce our defection from the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan, we have chosen Khalid Mehsud as the new leader for South Waziristan,” announced Tariq. Khalid Mehsud was a key ally of former Mehsud Taliban chief and former TTP number two Waliur Rehman Mehsud, who was killed in a US drone strike in May last year.

Speaking in an interview at an undisclosed location, Tariq said individual ideologies had created a rift among the Taliban and they were deviating from “the real cause”.

He claimed that the present TTP regime was carrying out bomb attacks on public places with bogus names and money was also being extorted from madrassahs and other institutions which, he said, was unacceptable.

“The TTP leadership has fallen into the hands of a bunch of conspirators, the umbrella organisation is involved in

criminal activities like robbery and extortion,” he said. He said other Taliban factions were also becoming distrustful of the main umbrella organisation. Azam further said that the group had tried to reform the TTP, claiming that, despite its efforts, conniving elements in the organisation had emerged successful.

The spokesman said that these elements had handed over management of the central organisation into the hands of “shadowy forces”. Two factions of the TTP, the umbrella grouping for disparate militant organisations, have been locked in bloody clashes for the past several weeks. Differences emerged in the militant organisation after former chief Hakimullah Mehsud was killed by a US drone in November last year and a crisis developed over the future leadership of the group. Khalid Mehsud was a contender for the TTP’s top slot after Hakimullah’s death, but the post eventually was handed to Maulana Fazlullah who hails from the scenic Swat valley and is the first non-Mehsud to lead the TTP.The conflict brought those backing Khalid Mehsud against supporters of Taliban commander Sheheryar Mehsud, who claim to be the followers of the late Hakimullah Mehsud. Infighting among the factions has also impeded and undermined what little progress had been made in peace negotiations with the government.

Rejecting the impression that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was “charge-sheeted” during his visit to India, Pakistan on Wednesday described the tour as reflective of “dignified diplomacy”, which “went well beyond the expectations”.

“The meeting was much better than expected,” stated Adviser to Prime Minister on National Security and Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz while sharing the details of the prime minister’s two-day visit to India with the media. He was referring to the meeting between the two countries’ prime ministers on Tuesday. “We did not expect much from the outcome of this visit but it went beyond our expectations,” Aziz said in response to a query.

He said the prime minister undertook this visit with a clear vision in mind, based on strategic calculation and “not just for a photo-op”. “In order to make this vision a reality, the starting point was for economic revival and development. … Both the leaders agreed that they had the mandate and their respective tenures ahead of them to meet the hope and aspirations of one and half billion people of the two countries.”

Faced with an array of pressing queries suggesting that the Pakistani premier took a lenient view on what is being termed as an “aggressive diplomacy” on part of his Indian counterpart, Aziz said, “It was dignified diplomacy. The issues were discussed in cordial atmosphere, and both sides shared their views.” Media reports have made

headlines that the Indian prime minister talked “tough” with the Pakistani premier on the thorny issues, especially cross-border terrorism and the Mumbai attacks.

Responding to these reports, Sartaj Aziz said, “There are media reports that they (India) handed over a charge-sheet to the PM. This is not correct. The visit was ceremonial in nature and we discussed the issues in an appropriate manner.”

The adviser said the issue of Kashmir was discussed during the meet-up. “The issue was raised and to say that Kashmir was sidelined is not correct. Pakistan has a clear stance on Kashmir as without its resolution the objective of long-lasting peace could not be achieved.”

On the issue of terrorism, he said, “The prime minister informed his Indian counterpart that terrorism was a mutual concern and Pakistan had suffered enormously from this menace. The people and government of Pakistan are serious and committed to fighting terrorism in their own national interest.” “Questions have now been raised on whether the issue of Mumbai trial, Samjhota Express and other terrorist attacks were discussed. As you all are aware, all aspects of terrorism have been discussed at different levels in our region. We believe that such issues can be handled only through constant interaction between the concerned authorities of the two countries. Government denies PM Nawaz charge sheeted in India

Nation has rejected misplaced ideology of terrorists: COAS Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif on Tuesday emphasized that the whole nation has rejected the misplaced ideology of the terrorists, ‘who have clearly lost their cause already and are being marginalised’, according to a press release issued by the ISPR. The chief of army staff visited the headquarters of two infantry divisions headquartered in North and South Waziristan agencies to review the operational readiness of the troops as well as progress on military-run developmental projects in the area. This was his second visit to Waziristan since assuming the army’s command last November.

The army chief reiterated the ‘whole hearted support for tribal brethren’ during his visit to the all important field formations of army, close to the area where it has been engaged in targeted crackdown in the recent days.

“Appreciating the determination and steadfastness of the troops as well as local people, the COAS emphasised that together the whole nation has rejected the misplaced ideology of the terrorists. He reiterated army’s continued

support for tribal brethren under all circumstances.

The army chief, according to the ISPR, commended the professional commitment of troops and paid rich tributes to them for their sacrifices in bringing peace and normalcy to the troubled regions. The army chief’s visit bears significance in the context of the peace talks with Taliban apparently nearing a collapse. The top government functionaries say the peace process is not over but reiterate that the militant violence would be paid in the same coin.

Last Wednesday, the Pakistan Army and Pakistan Air Force (PAF) jointly launched surgical strikes on the militant hideouts in Miranshah and Mir Ali subdivisions of North Waziristan Agency in which up to 60 militants were reported dead. In the military-led ground action that continued for the next three days, up to 80 militants were said to be killed whereas four security personnel were martyred. Top military commanders including Toor Wali and Zamurd Jehan, the close associates of slain military commander Jihadyar Mehsud, were purportedly targeted in the aerial strikes.

Uncertainty as Iraq election results revealed

Iraq’s incumbent Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki’s apparent victory in parliamentary elections at the end of April has given him a leading role in forming the next government, but it will not necessarily secure him a third term in office. On Monday, Iraq’s electoral results were published in national newspapers. The tally was accompanied by a warning that only three days remain to lodge electoral disputes. The results will be considered final when the Iraqi High Electoral Commission, and the country’s High Court, have addressed the accusations of impropriety. Meanwhile, political manoeuvering began as political parties will seek to form a large enough coalition bloc to form a government. Possible court rulings that would adjust the election results are not expected to affect the alliances. Based on the IHEC results published on Monday, Maliki’s State of Law coalition won 92 seats in the newly elected parliament. Smaller parties headed by State of Law members who ran under separate electoral lists secured another eight seats, allowing Maliki to claim that he seized at least 100 of the 328 seat parliament. The Islah party, led by Ibrahim al-Jaafari, one of Maliki’s prominent allies, secured six additional seats. The Fadhila party, another State of Law ally, won a further six seats. If they were to form a political alliance, State of Law and other Shia parties could create a 170-180 seat bloc. In Baghdad, more than 700,000 people voted for Maliki’s State of Law list. On Friday, the party nominated him as their only candidate for prime minister. Shia Muslim parties, including al-Islah and al-Fadhilah, are in talks with Maliki’s State of Law coalition to revive the “National Alliance” that formed the 2010 administration. Under constitutional rules, this would create a big enough bloc to nominate a prime minister and form a new

government. His rivals, however, including fellow Shia Muslims sympathetic to the State of Law alliance, strongly oppose Maliki’s bid for a third term. We do not support Maliki for another term and we asked the National Alliance to nominate someone else,” said Mohammed al-Hamdani, a senior Sadrist leader. “He did not serve the people and did not deliver on his promises to the other political blocs.” Sunni parties performed poorly in the election as they ran during a time of deep internal divisions. The leading Sunni Mutahidoun list, headed by parliamentary speaker Osama al-Nujaifi, won only 23 seats across the country. Some Sunni blocs have expressed willingness to work with Maliki if he agreed to their demands. “We have no red line against any candidate, including Maliki,” said Qassim al-Fahdawi, an MP and former governor of Anbar province, which has been rocked by sectarian violence in recent months.

Al-Fahdawi said the new government should release innocent people who were jailed during Maliki’s rule, a key Sunni grievance, and cancel a law that removed members of Saddam Hussein’s Baath party from powerful state positions, which many see as discriminating against Sunnis. Maliki may also need the help of the Kurds to form a new government. Kurdish parties won 62 seats in the new parliament, but relations between the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and Baghdad have become increasingly strained as the Kurds push for more financial independence. Kurdish officials in Erbil said that talks over forming a government will also need to focus on solving pending issues between the Kurdish region and the capital, such as management of oil, territory and budgets. Since January, the central government has been withholding the Kurds’ share of the national budget over their plans to sell oil independently. On May 23, Kurdistan’s Ministry of Natural Resources announced it had exported crude oil from Kurdistan to world markets via Turkey, without Baghdad’s consent. Iraq’s oil ministry responded by declaring legal action against Turkey. Kurds, however, feel that Maliki did not honour commitments he made when they backed him for a second term in 2010; among them, an agreement over the passing of an oil and gas law. Opponents also fear Maliki’s tendency to consolidate power through the security forces, said al-Ali. “That will make it very difficult to convince any potential partners of his trustworthiness,” he said.

UN agency warns of Somalia hunger deaths

About 200,000 children under the age of five could die from severe malnutrition in Somalia by the end of the year, unless the United Nations receives emergency funds to stave off mass hunger, UN officials have said. Only $15m has been received against the appeal by the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) to donor states for $150m to provide vital health services to more than three million women and children in the Horn of Africa nation this year, the agency said on Tuesday. “If funding is not received immediately, UNICEF will have to suspend essential life-saving health services within one month,” said the agency spokesman Christophe Boulierac in Geneva. “Somalia has 200,000 children under the age of five at risk of death (by) the end of the year 2014 from severe malnutrition if they do not receive life-saving therapeutic assistance.” About 50,000 Somali children under five currently suffer from acute severe malnutrition, according to UNICEF. Somalia’s government is struggling to impose any sense of order, more than two decades after the fall of dictator Mohamed Siad Barre plunged the country into

chaos. UNICEF has been providing 70 percent of health services including medicines, vaccinations, staff salaries and fuel to run hospital generators, especially in central and southern Somalia, Boulierac said. Western nations fear the country could sink back into chaos and provide a launch pad for armed groups. The capital Mogadishu has been hit by a series of suicide bomb attacks in the past few months, claimed by al Qaeda-linked al-Shabab rebels, who have waged a sustained guerrilla campaign even after being pushed out of the city in mid-2011.

Thousands of US troops to stay in Afghanistan

US President Barack Obama has announced a pullout plan for Afghanistan that will leave 9,800 troops in the country after 2014, overriding previous plans of a complete withdrawal by the end of the year. Obama announced the two-year plan on Tuesday saying the US would complete its military intervention by 2016. The announcement came after he reportedly briefed Afghan President Hamid Karzai by phone. Anticipating criticism of his decision for a near-total US pullout at the end of 2016, Obama said Afghanistan’s security forces have shown they are capable of defending their country. “We have to recognise that Afghanistan will not be a perfect place and it is not America’s responsibility to make it one,” Obama said in the White House Rose Garden. He credited American forces, which were first deployed by President George W Bush within a month of the September 11, 2001, attacks, with striking significant blows against al-Qaeda’s leadership, eliminating Osama bin Laden and preventing Afghanistan from being used as a base for strikes against the US. While Karzai

has declined to sign a bilateral agreement, US officials said they were confident that either of the candidates seeking to replace him would give his approval. Both candidates who are on the ballot in next month’s runoff - former Foreign Minister Abdullah Abdullah and ex-Finance Minister Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai - welcomed Obama’s announcement, the Associated Press news agency reported. By the end of 2016, the US presence would be cut to a normal embassy presence and will staff a security office in the capital, as has been done in Iraq, a senior government official told reporters earlier on Tuesday.

Obama has also discussed his plans with several European leaders, including German Chancellor Angela Merkel, British Prime Minister David Cameron and Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi. At least 2,181 members of the US military have died during the nearly 13-year Afghan war and thousands more have been wounded.

The total NATO presence, including US troops, is expected to be around 12,000 at the start of next year.

The B.C. Teachers’ Federation will continue its strike action into next week after the two sides failed to hammer out a deal following three days of negotiations. But as the teachers increased the pressure by declaring that students will be out of classes for another day on a rotating basis next Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, the Education Minister attempted to entice them back to the bargaining table with a suggestion of further concessions. The strike action was announced even before negotiators for the government and the union had finished their bargaining for the day. Negotiators had been meeting since Monday. BCTF president Jim Iker said the government needs to be more flexible and willing to compromise on the issues of wages and class sizes. Mr. Iker called on Premier Christy Clark to “free up the resources that will bring the two sides closer together.” Education Minister Peter Fassbender said he was disappointed that students and parents “will continue to be held hostage” by the dispute, but he said he does not intend to use legislation to end it. “We are not going to run to legislation because the pattern we have seen in the past is exactly that,” he told reporters in Victoria.

Mr. Fassbender called on the BCTF to refrain from job action. The teachers began

four days of rotating walkouts this week in an effort to back their demands for higher wages as well as a return to class size and composition limits that were stripped from contracts by the Liberal government in 2002. Two court rulings have ordered the government to restore those contract provisions, though the government has said that would cost taxpayers $2-billion. It is appealing the ruling, but that won’t be heard until the fall. Meanwhile, a small group of concerned parents met with Education Minister Peter Fassbender in Victoria on Wednesday in the hopes of changing the tone of the bitter labour dispute. Both sides will be at the B.C. Labour Relations Board on Thursday for a ruling on whether the government is allowed to cut teachers’ wages by 10 per cent due to their lighter workloads during the job action. Ms. Clark said Tuesday she’s hoping the hearing will trigger a conclusion to the dispute within 48 hours. Teachers are asking for a 13.7-per-cent pay raise over four years.

The government has responded with an offer of 7.3 per cent over six years and a partial lockout that prevents teachers from being at work more than 45 minutes before class starts and 45 minutes after it ends.

EU Calls on Russia to Help End Fighting in Ukraine

European Union leaders on Tuesday hailed the presidential election in Ukraine and called on Vladimir Putin’s Russia to do what it can to end the fighting in the country’s east. Leaders of the 28 EU countries, meeting in Brussels, said they expect Russia to cooperate with Ukraine’s “newly elected and legitimate president,” Petro Poroshenko, winner of Sunday’s elections. If Moscow doesn’t cooperate or fails to help halt the fighting, it could face stiffer economic sanctions, French President Francois Hollande said. “President Putin must now not only respect the (election) outcome but also recognize the Ukraine president and make sure there is a de-escalation, which is expected and possible today,” Hollande said. In a statement, the EU heads of state and government said that as a priority, Russia should prevent separatists and weapons from crossing the border into Ukraine. Russian troops should also continue to withdraw from areas near Ukraine, where NATO has said they have been exerting a coercive influence, the leaders said. “We encourage the Russian Federation to enter into a frank and open dialogue” with Ukraine’s government, the leaders said. The EU and Russia have been at odds over Ukraine for months.

The refusal of its former elected president

to enter into an association agreement with the trade bloc and opt instead for closer ties with the Kremlin sparked large protests that drove him from office, and set the stage for Russia’s unilateral annexation of Crimea. The EU has imposed limited asset freezes and visas bans on people linked to the Crimea takeover and the pro-Russian revolt in Ukraine’s east. Hollande said tougher measures could be imposed by the West based on Moscow’s future actions. “The threats of sanctions are still there,” Hollande told a news conference. He noted he had invited Putin to visit France on June 6, the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings, and said, “at that time we will hold talks.” In their statement, the EU leaders pledged continued assistance to Ukraine, and said they were looking forward to “working closely” with Poroshenko. But they said Ukraine must do more to fight corruption, reform the judiciary and police and improve the business climate. To help Ukraine, the European Union has already disbursed the first installment of macro-financial assistance totaling 1.61 billion euros ($2.2 billion). On Tuesday, the EU’s executive arm recommended a further step toward ultimately allowing visa-free travel by Ukrainian citizens.

A starving economy is padding the world’s obesity rate, according to a new report. The study, published Tuesday by The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, looked at the “obesity epidemic” in 34 countries, finding the global average of obese adults to be nearly one in five (18%).

That shows rates have nearly doubled since 1980, when fewer than 1 in 10 people in OECD countries were obese. In Canada, it found that more than half the population is now overweight, with one out of four considered obese. The 2008 recession caused families to cut their food expenditures, the OECD says. Perhaps counterintuitively, the decrease in spending led to an increase in calorie intake. “Tighter food budgets have provided incentives for consumers to switch to lower-priced and less healthy foods,” reads the report. “The evidence of a possible impact of the economic crisis on obesity points rather consistently to a likely increase in body weight and obesity.” It’s simple to explain, says David Lau, an obesity expert from the University of Calgary.

“If we hit a financial crisis where money is tight, people tend to eat less fruit and vegetables because they’re the more expensive and perishable items that people can avoid,” he told CTV News Channel. He added that fast food restaurants offer cheap food that doesn’t need to be prepared, which is appealing to those stressed out and looking for work. “You can feed a family of four in Canada for less than $15,” he says. “Where else can you buy food for that little money?”

Obesity rates in Canada have been slowly climbing since the 1990s, and the country ranks sixth among OECD member countries in terms of obesity. Only the U.S., Mexico, New Zealand, Hungary and Australia have a higher percentage of obese adults. But while Canada sits near the top of the charts, the OECD pointed out that the growth rate of obesity here is at least slowing. “Obesity

rates are high in Canada, relative to most OECD countries,” it says. “But they have not increased substantially in the last 15 years.” The report also shows a correlation between education level and obesity rates in most countries, including Canada. Those with “low education” are almost 1.5 times more likely to be obese than their “high education” counterparts, it says. Canadian children were tipping the scales a little less than adults – but not by much. About 25 per cent of those under 15 in Canada are considered “overweight,” a few percentage points above the OECD global averages for boys (23%) and girls (21%). The OECD study also looks at a variety of prevention programs, including school-based intervention and improving food labelling. Better counselling by a family physician was the most effective way to improve health, it concluded, stating up to 40,000 “life years in good health” could be gained across Canada annually. The think-tank also thinks the cost of the prevention programs will eventually balance out against the strain obesity puts on the health care system. “In Canada, all of the prevention programs examined will be cost-effective in the long run,” the report states.

Eurosceptics surge in ‘earthquake’ EU polls

A United Nations envoy says there’s a crisis in Canada when it comes to how aboriginal people in this country are treated, noting that the relationship between the federal government and indigenous peoples is even more strained than a decade ago. In a new report released Monday, James Anaya -the UN’s Special Rapporteur on the rights of indigenous peoples -- says there appears to be a high level of distrust among aboriginal Canadians toward both the federal government and the provinces. The report notes that the “disturbing phenomenon” of missing and murdered aboriginal women has further strained relations, and it calls on Ottawa to launch “a comprehensive, national inquiry” into the issue of why aboriginal women and girls remain vulnerable to abuse. Further, the report notes the “distressing socio-economic conditions of indigenous peoples” in Canada and says it’s particularly jarring given that Canada is so highly developed. “It is difficult to reconcile Canada’s well-developed legal framework and general prosperity with the human rights problems faced by indigenous peoples in Canada that have reached crisis proportions in many respects,” the report reads. Anaya spent nine days in Canada last year meeting with First Nations representatives and government officials, as a followup to a visit made in 2004 by the previous Special Rapporteur. Anaya notes that the previous envoy recommended that Canada intensify its measures to close the gaps between indigenous and non-indigenous Canadians in health care, housing, education, and social services. Better Leave the ‘Bitter Past’ Behind!

A journey of thousand miles begins with first step. But, if the first step reminds us of thousands of Muslims who were butchered during the “state orchestrated pogroms” in Gujarat, the initial step automatically becomes too heavy. There is frustration, anger, hatred, and trust deficit - all in one. Most of the people with good conscience know well who really was the chief culprit or abettor of the massacre at the time.

The ruthless mass murder can’t be forgiven under any circumstances.

Congratulations to India for having Prime Minister with a heavy mandate. Based on his past record of good governance Mr Narendra Modi successfully worked his way up from the position of chief minister to the hot seat of prime minister of India through polls.

With Modi in the driver seat, the well mandated BJP (Bharati Janta Party) has already begun to run the show with full confidence. Yet, it’s too early to suggest whether India’s addiction to keep denting the image of Pakistan would pause for a while to continue later or there would be actual benefits showing up sooner or later. From his body language and facial expressions, it seems as if Modi’s perception hasn’t changed a bit towards Pakistan. Therefore, his pre election “anti Pakistan rhetoric” cannot be taken so lightly.

During the one on one meeting last Tuesday between the Indo Pak leaders, both prime ministers admitted that war was not the solution, so peaceful negotiated settlement is the only option left.

Habitually, PM Modi mainly asked PM Shareef for stopping terrorism, yet he failed to show his intention to disengage Indian involvement in Baluchistan, the Fata and other parts of Pakistan. That’s really depressing. Apparently, Modi copied the ongoing style of maintaining momentum of Indian claim merely to build up pressure on the visiting

According to Pak resources, the Mumbai ordeal was an inside job that was carried out only to defame Pakistan so that the international community has soft corner for India. The problem is Indian propaganda always has been aimed at getting Pakistan declared a rogue state and epicenter of terrorism.

Under Modi “India will be the regional boss,” is merely India’s over confidence. The fact is Pakistan can’t be under-estimated, because it’s rich with immense natural resources and reserves with a price tag of trillions of dollars. If Baluchistan has gold mines, the FATA has copper mines. There is manpower and there is brain power. Only foreign sponsored terrorism is the main hurdle in the way of development.

Inherent disease: It’s true that because of poverty some people in Pakistan are vulnerable; they can be suppressed, oppressed, manipulated. They end up being corrupt, while the successive regimes tended to be corrupt as well. It’s the obsolete system which needs overhauling for sure.

Coming back to the topic, it’s pretty interesting to note that Indian press reported: The former Indian diplomats and intelligence officials did advise Modi to invite all saarc members as part of a foreign policy masterstroke at the beginning of his

tenure to establish India as regional boss. On the contrary, PM Shareef did not have any clue as to what was actually cooking. He should have consulted Pakistani intelligence personnel ahead of accepting the invitation.

The looming fear is the BJP government appears to be adopting a more aggressive nationalistic foreign policy and a more confrontational course with Pakistan.

A big lesson for Pakistani Political elite: The winning secret of the BJP is their past delivery including excellent performance, faster economic growth, infrastructure development, more jobs and less corruption. Mr. Modi has a track record of excellent delivery. He is seen as a competent economic manager now at the national level as well.

Also, the BJP is committed to reconstruct the Ram temple in Ayodhya on the site of the destroyed Babri masjid (anti-Muslim pogroms). By the way, Mr Modi used a picture of Ram as the backdrop at a public meeting at Faizabad near Ayodhya defying the election laws forbidding the use of religion for political purposes.

Quite obviously, India’s massive tilt to the right is expected to put the country on a path to becoming a more assertively Hindu society which is intolerant of other faiths.

The question is, where would the Secularism go? Furthermore, BJP campaign was obsessed with the anti-Muslim flavour all the way.

Not condemning last year’s antiMuslim violence in Muzaffarnagar is serious. Not condemning the recent murder of over 40 Bengali Muslims in Assam by Bodo militants is intolerable as well. Modi also warned that once in power he would send the Bangladeshi infiltrators (Muslims) back to Bangladesh.

This is notwithstanding the high-pitched differences of opinion existing in the country in between the tyrant religious organizations with anti-India posture like Jamat-ud-dawa , headed

by Muhammad Hafiz Saeed on the one hand (who are not in deed in favor of the stabilization of relations in between India and Pakistan) and Political parties like Pakistan People’s Party and Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf of Imran Khan (who have faith in the normalization in the relations of both the cross-border countries) on the other hand. These parties hold the opinion that the cordial rapport in between the two adjoining nations will positively pave the way

for their eloquent dialogue on their inter-related issues that seem to be somewhat irritating, including the vexatious Kashmir problem. Now that Sharif has confirmed his participation, leaders of all SAARC nations would, for the first time, be present at the oath-taking ceremony of an Indian Prime Minister. Despite the tough stance of BJP towards Pakistan, let’s give it a sincere try to turn a new page in our mutual relations for the benefit of present and future generations.

Talking about Death is not going to kill us By: Mohammad Yacoob “ Every human being is bound to taste death”. This verse appears in the Holy Quran in chapters Al-Imran, Ankabut and Al-Ambia.

The most appropriate words have been used in the Quran for describing the fact that we will one day die.

God is telling us that the only sure thing in this life is death. Day to day awareness of death can assist us in living life fully. As human beings, we spend much of our lives seeking happiness, wealth, health and other luxuries of life, imagining that they can best be found by ignoring our own mortality. Yet, the Quran has reminded us that every one is going to taste death, a simple, un-scary and human way of mentioning the ultimate fact of each individual’s existence on this earth.

The Quran has discussed, in many chapters the topics of, the day of judgment, life after death and death itself as guidance for a healthier and more God conscious life in this world. Talking about death will not kill us, but, this talk and discussion can help us streamline our lives through discipline, honesty and righteousness.

Many a times, the Imam in the mosque would turn towards the congregation before starting the prayer and say, “ Pray as if this is your last prayer”. The purpose of this prompt is to remind our selves that the flame of life may extinguish before the arrival of the time for the next obligatory prayer. No one is aware of the time of death. By remembering death while standing in front of God - engaged in prayer Ð we are putting ourselves in a frame of mind that will allow us to see the positive side of engaging our feelings about death.

While praying we must remain focused, concentrate on submitting to God and seek God’s forgiveness. The greater sense of preciousness of life can be experienced by openly engaging our feelings about death. It has been found that majority of the people don’t want to discuss death.

By saying that every human being will taste death, Allah, is telling us to look at life and reflect on death, not when a dear one is near death or out of it. He is encouraging us to speak of it while we are in the flower of good

health. We must envision our life by recognizing that it is finite.

An insurance agent, once said “Insurance is all about death; we talk about everything; paying premiums, settling claims, making payments in hundreds of thousands of dollars, issuing premium default notices, etc, but never mention death or say if you die, your family gets the insured money. Insurance is all about death “.

Most human beings in their life times seldom see a dead body. This may be, when a relative or a dear one has passed away. The following example illustrates as to how an individual feels about life and death when he is forced by circumstances to focus on death. In early 1970’s, the only burial place available or known to Muslims in Los Angeles, California, was a specific area in the Forest Lawn Mortuary. The Director of the mortuary told the Muslims that movie stars Sabot and Turban Bye were buried there and it was the most suitable area for Muslim burial. There was no separate burial site or a graveyard for Muslims in California. For the burial of a Muslim stillborn girl, the Forest Lawn mortuary was contacted by the family. A family member was assigned the task of bringing some items to a room on the second floor of the mortuary building, where four ladies were engaged in preparing the girl’s body for burial. He arrived in the lobby and was given directions to go to the second floor. He followed directions and got on the elevator.

The elevator door opened, he stepped out, went into a big hall and immediately went into shock. Seven dead bodies were lying on seven different tables in the big hall. His brain fogged and he saw nothing but darkness in front of him. He started breathing heavily. He somehow managed to go to the other end of the hall, turned right and ended up in the room where Muslim ladies where giving burial bath to the baby. After making his delivery, he lowered his gaze, walked back to the elevator, and finally ended up in the lobby on the first floor. He was sweating and shaking. After that he delivered a very short but dynamic speech and said that for the first part of his journey from Mecca to Masjid al Aqsa, Prophet(saw) knew a lot of details as people who would not believe his physical journey. The Prophet presented “Tashahhud” to Allah (swt)and got Salat ( 5 Prayers) from Miraj. Today this Miraj un Nabi reminds everyone of us to pray 5 times a day.

He mentioned in details that in order to understand this journey of our beloved Prophet Mohammad (SAW), we should read the verses of Surah Isra’a and Sura Najam in the Holy Quran.

1.The Acropolis was not a teple There are two little known facts about the Acropolis located in Athens, Greece.

First, although the Acropolis is known for its temples, it was not originally built for religious purposes. Located on a hill in the centre of the city of Athens, it was constructed as a fortress where the people could take cover in the event of an attack on the city of Athens. Second little known fact: the ruins today are thought by many to have decayed over time, but the reality is the ruins are mostly damaged due to explosions that took place when the Acropolis was taken over by outsiders and used to store gunpowder and other military weapons. Otherwise, these ancient structures would still be nearly perfect today.

2.The Statue of Liberty was once a lighthouse Lady Liberty was a gift from France, intended to serve as a reminder of freedom.

17 I M M I G R A T I O N Temporary foreign workers dominate immigration conference Shabaan 1, 1435 May 30, 2014

Written by Jennifer Nees Every year, members of the immigration bar gather together to discuss emerging issues and rising trends in the practice of immigration at the Canadian Bar Association’s annual immigration conference. This year, the conference was held in Calgary. Immigration practitioners from across Canada (and around the globe!) met to learn and discuss some of the very real issues facing our rapidly changing industry.

As is usual with a large conference of this nature, there were government speakers, learned practitioners, and animated questions from the floor. Sessions were often so full it was standing room only, an indication times are changing fast. There was a formal dinner and impromptu hallway meetings — and even a surprise guest!

But more on the surprise guest later.

For immigration practitioners, especially business-focused lawyers, this conference fell at an interesting time. Temporary foreign workers, and specifically, Canada’s Temporary Foreign Worker Program, have been in the news once again in an unflattering light.

Large, brand name companies have been accused of favouring foreign workers over local staff and a moratorium has been placed on the hiring of foreign workers in an entire market segment.

As with most things, there aren’t simple solutions. Government needs to protect the labour market and ensure solid, Canadian growth. This sometimes conflicts with a business owner’s desire to be able to hire the best person for the job, regardless of nationality.

Combine these aims with public perception,

and there is a quagmire at hand.

This conflict was definitely felt at the CBA. Practitioners shared tales of foreign workers in limbo, struggling employers facing seemingly insurmountable hurdles with bringing in highly skilled C-suite employees, and government workers being told to toe the line. We were told politely by government officials there are no exceptions to the rules except in rare circumstances and in some instances new processes are meant to bring faster processing times. The rules are meant to make it faster, to make it more transparent, and to hopefully make it more predictable.

It all sounds great and very reasonable.

The problem with this approach? Business isn’t predictable.

Now that does not mean businesses have the right to be cruel, unfair, or exploitative. But corporate needs vary (and change rapidly), decisions are made for all manner of reasons, often hard to articulate outside of a directors’ meeting, and learning curves vary. As immigration practitioners, we spend time with our clients identifying their corporate needs both in the short and long term in order to develop immigration strategies that serve business needs while maintaining good corporate stewardship.

But with the recent cases in the news, it seems public goodwill has been lost, or at least is being seriously tested.

In the recent high-profile food industry cases, the media reported a situation where foreign workers appeared to be favoured over local workers. The main company in question immediately called a review of its temporary foreign worker hiring policy and said in press statements it would work with the government to get to the bottom of things.

Comments on these articles were largely anti-immigrant and anti-foreign worker. Not for the first time, there was a near xenophobic backlash from people who read the headlines and avoid the details of the story, there-

fore failing to understand the complexities of Canada’s temporary foreign worker system.

This was discussed at length at the CBA conference. All temporary foreign workers cannot be treated in exactly the same way.

The issue was raised time and again at both sessions and in those impromptu hallway gatherings.

To the delight of many of the assembled guests in the packed-to-capacity conference room, this sentiment seemed to be shared by a surprise conference guest, Employment and Social Development Minister Jason Kenney.

That’s right. In a room full of immigration lawyers, Kenney took the stage and owned it. He was poised, thoughtful, and downright congenial. He opened the floor to comments from the bar, stating he knew we had a lot to say and he wanted to give us the opportunity to say it. It’s a brave politician who opens himself up this way and is certainly something I admire in Kenney.

I’ve said before while I may not always agree with Kenney, I do admire his business sense.

In many ways, the Employment and Social Development Canada beat is better suited to his business mentality and this showed in the open forum he encouraged at the conference.

While he acknowledged there may need to be exceptions to the current restrictive rules (and some bold ways of determining that such as setting a minimum high wage level instead of relying on the government’s own National Occupation Classification system as a determining factor), he also laid out the case as to why bold broad steps are necessary. Exploitation and trafficking are key concerns. While lawyers are quick to point out this is not a typical concern with higher level employees, the government expressed during this conference that sometimes it’s necessary to paint with broad strokes until workable solutions are discovered (I may be paraphrasing here).

The minister acknowledged, and most prac-

titioners would likely agree, there isn’t one Temporary Foreign Worker Program. In fact, the opposite is true. Most of the cases in the press recently have been regarding foreign workers brought in under the labour market opinion stream. In fact, less than 50 per cent of all temporary foreign workers are in Canada under this category. Many more come in under the LMO-exempt categories of NAFTA professional, international experience class, or intra-company transfers, to name a few.

Further complicating matters is the LMO application itself can be used to bring in a graphic designer or the CEO of a Fortune 500 company. While the roles are vastly different with different stakes to the Canadian economy, ESDC treats them the same. The same advertising and recruitment requirements apply to each.

Therefore, when we talk about temporary foreign workers, we have to be clear who we are referring to. And when revamping the program(s), it has to be clear who benefits and why.

The end result remains to be seen, but the consequences of a misstep in the public eye remain disastrous. As discussed at the conference, it only takes one person to cause problems for a company. One disgruntled person who raises an issue to the press or one bad apple in one office of a multi-national company can bring total havoc on the entire system. At that point, it might not matter if the company is right or wrong — public perception matters.

Despite this, as counsel it is our obligation to continue to challenge these issues and have these discussions. Even practitioners who do not practise immigration law can read up on these issues and advocate for fair access and justice. A strong Canada relies on a strong, diverse workforce, which sometimes necessitates the need for a foreign worker. http://www.canadianlawyermag.com

Do We Know w Who We Are?

By Maria Khalifé Mahatma Gandhi said “I want freedom for the full expression of my personality.” I began to think about that idea and it brought up another similar quotation that had hung for a full year on the board of my sixth grade classroom: “Personality is who people think you are; character is what God knows you are.” I think that whether you like the word personality or you like the word character, whatever one you choose to define yourself, it is important to accomplish that task.

We can know who we are by looking at our thinking, our speaking and our actions.

Let’s look at those one at a time.

To look at what you are thinking, I’d like to remind you about the little voice of your conscious that has been in there watching all along. Know how that little voice talks to you and makes comments to you that you don’t dare to say out loud? Yes, that little voice. You have already been going within yourself much of your life. It’s simply about elevating those internal conversations to a position of greater authority in your life and honoring what you hear or see yourself saying inside your own mind.

One of the keenest skills I’ve noticed in Asian cultures is that keen ability to observe and this is what I’d recommend that you foster within yourself. In order to do that, you’d more than likely have to speak less out loud unless you are capable of doing two things simultaneously. You may discover great wisdom as you observe. You may also discover things that can be improved.

Either way, you will be well served to observe what you are thinking, because, as Shakespeare said “There is nothing either good or bad but thinking makes it so.” You can Know who you are if you observe yourself thinking.

To observe yourself speaking requires a bit more skill, because you do have to be talking and observing at the same time. Your thinking always precedes your speaking and I believe you should start at the beginning to observe what you think before you can accomplish this part. Communicating our thoughts and ideas places us the highest on the food chain, so this ability should be revered as one of our capabilities. You want to acquire a way to speak fluidly, naturally and comfortably. If you can slow down while

you are speaking and only say the most critical parts, your observation will benefit you well.

Some questions you might ask yourself while speaking are: Are these words essential? Have I interrupted someone else’s words? Will what I am saying hurt someone? Will my words have a positive impact?

Are my words of value to my listener? Am I articulating well? Is my tone appropriate?

Do my words match what is really in my heart? Do my words permit me to remain in integrity with my true, core beliefs? Does the face of my listener reflect his interest or is he disinterested? What else remains when I quit speaking? Do I owe someone an apology? Watching your actions is the last step toward self-knowledge. Why do you do the things you do? What motivates you? Where did you unfold your skills? Do you have enough skills to do a thing well? Each of us has at least one talent to do at least one thing really well. Do you know what that is for you? If you observe your actions keenly

and objectively, you can discover that. Just doing that one thing well is a grand way to develop your identity.

Each of us has one unique gift. Beethoven was gifted musically. Fairuz was gifted with a magnificent voice. Einstein was gifted scientifically. Khalil Gibran was gifted poetically. If you could picture your own funeral, what gift would others say you had? Learn to observe your actions from that perspective.

Pretend you are a detective who follows you around. What conclusions would he come to just by watching you? This is the kind of objectivity you need to know who you are. You might see strengths; you might see weaknesses. Whatever you see, observing your actions objectively will help you know who you are.

Your thinking, your speaking and your actions are foundational knowledge that has to be set in place before you can Be the Change in your life to create more health, wealth, success, and happiness. I know you can do it.

I’m not overweight or in terrible shape, but I know that my eating habits are not what they should be.Some people seem to really enjoy researching what to eat and closely monitoring their diet. Eating healthier is not as hard as it seems I feel that focusing on these eight foods is a simple way to eat healthier without going crazy. It is amazing to me the amount of benefit I can gain from just these eight simple foods. Heart disease and cancer are obviously two of the biggest things that concern me and this strategy addresses them head on. These foods are also low in calories and when combined with 30 minutes of moderate exercise a day, I might even see a few pounds drop off the old body!

Islamic economics and its comprehension

By Mohammed Al Balushi Economics, regardless of whether it is micro economics or a macro, is a subject which needs to be understood from the roots to its branches. Economic is the subject which does not differ from one religion to another. It is a subject which fits all societies. It is the need of all human beings. No matter if you are a president or an ordinary person from the same state. No matter if you are a true Muslim or belong to any other respected religions. It does not even matter if you are an atheist. Economics as a subject is essential for all of you, because no one can survive without a piece of bread.

Understandingly, Islam is the religion which covers all aspects and elements of life. Practically, how does Islam look and apply economics for a better life? According to Islamic literature Islamic economics began with the advent of Islam, which means fourteen centuries ago. Some Islamic books does highlight that. Quran, however, doesn’t explain in detail the fiscal policies but there are some economic teachings and guiding principles which determine such policies. However, the necessary details and teachings were clas-

sified by Prophet Mohammed, (PBUH). In early Islam, the main sources of income were zakah, jiziya, and khumus. In those days whatever was collected in the shapes of (zakah, jiziya, and khumus) were equally distributed to the public (needy people).

The second caliph Umar had justified the taxes by saying; “Taxes are justified only when they are collected in a just and legal way and they are spent justly and legally”.

In the current world, how the sunnah and sharia assist in formulating principles for fiscal operation? How does modern Islam and Muslims see economic in its true Islamic way and principle? Today, is the collection of zakah taking place appropriately? And is the distribution equally and justly done to the have-nots in the society in the world of Islam? Unfortunately, all such practices are not mostly seen in todays Islamic world. Economically, there are many good lessons from Islam, if applied many economic issues may get reduced. In many Islamic countries the proper distribution of wealth is lacking.

One of the economists have said; “There is no underdeveloped country in the world, but there are some areas in the same country which are not developed by the ruler”.

In the same way, you find one person is a billionaire while the other is penniless in the same country and within the same area.

Before the conclusion, in my personal opinion I would say that it is not the religion which makes a good economic policy or a worse one. It all depends on you as an economist and explaining everything in an economic way. For economists things are meaningless if they are not translated into economic language. Suppose you are a film-maker and spend more than six months to complete the film. The film gets completed successfully. As an economist I am not interested how many days you have spent, where you went for shooting, what lighting methods you have used, what obstacles you have faced, instead, I am more interested in how much amount you have spent, what was your budget, and how much you have made as a net profit.

Suppose you are a novelist and published some hundred books. As an economist I might not be interest in reading all of your books, because, these are not yet translated

to me in an economical language.But, I am very much interested to find out how many books were sold and read by people.

Individually, what is your contribution toward economics? How much do you produce per hour, per day, per week and per month? Once, you understood your productivity level and the value of it, then; it means you are on the right path, economically.

Whenever, there is a conversation on economy, Adam Smith, the father of economy always comes to peoples’ mind. He stated in the Wealth of the Nation his famous book, that labour of every nation is the fund which originally supplies it with all the necessaries and conveniences of life which it annually consumes, and which consist always either in the immediate produce of that labour, or in what is purchased with that produce from nations. This indicates that nations are producers and at the same time the consumers. It is the nations who produce materials and consume at the same time.

Young adults who were exposed to adverse experiences as children have greater signs of unhealthy blood vessel function than young people without a traumatic past, a new study finds.The results suggest that early-life stress may raise the risk of heart disease later on by affecting blood vessel function and blood pressure in ways that can be detected during young adulthood, the authors say.

“We have translated ideas that we had from animal research and found that it’s true in humans,” Jennifer Pollock told Reuters Health.

Pollock, part of the research team, co-directs cardio-renal physiology and medicine in the nephrology division at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

She and her colleagues looked for elevations in blood pressure and other indicators of how well blood vessels constrict or relax, as well as signs of stiffness in blood vessel walls. “All of this was highly correlated with people who have more of these stresses during childhood than the people who had no stressors in childhood,” she said.

Pollock said that household dysfunction was the most common adverse event, followed by neglect and abuse. For their study, which was published in the journal Hypertension, Pollock and her colleagues analyzed data on 221 healthy adolescents and young adults recruited for a study of cardiovascular risk factors that started in 1989. The research team looked at markers of blood vessel health including blood pressure, the heart’s output of blood, characteristics of the pulse and levels of a substance called endothelin-1, a protein that constricts blood vessels and increases blood pressure. They calculated adverse childhood event (ACE) scores based on a questionnaire answered when the participants were about 21 years old. Those who reported one traumatic event were classified as having mild ACE and those with two or more traumatic events were classified as moderate or severe ACE. The researchers found that participants who had one traumatic event in childhood had plasma endothelin-1 levels that were an average of 18 percent higher than those who had reported

no traumatic events, and those who had two or more traumatic childhood events had levels that were 24 percent higher. Participants with two or more adverse events also had elevated measures of blood pressure and blood vessel stiffness.

The study didn’t follow up to see if those young people ended up having more heart attacks, strokes or other illnesses. And it cannot prove that the early-life traumas were the cause of the cardiovascular differences. Nonetheless, Pollock said that in the future she’d like to determine if behavioral therapies may change the course of the cardiovascular risk factors in people who have these early life stressors.

She added that untreated periodontal diseases can increase inflammation in the body. ”Such increased inflammation may aggravate the risk for developing severe health complications like cardiovascular diseases, organ failure, dementia and even cancer in some cases,” she said.

In periodontitis, gums pull away from the teeth and form infection-prone spaces or “pockets” which can even lead to breaking down of the teeth bone and connective tissues that hold the teeth in place.

If untreated, the bones, gums, and tissue that support the teeth are destroyed and the teeth may eventually loosen.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), over 70 per cent of Indian children under the age of 15 suffer from gum diseases due to poor oral hygiene and nourishment.

WHO added that such poor levels of hygiene cause several health hazards including cancer, organ failure, dementia and rheumatoid arthritis if left untreated.

GM Jim Benning believes in new team’s core, but Canucks need ‘more depth’, ‘the right coach’

TNew general manager Jim Benning says he believes in the Vancouver Canucks’ core players and thinks the team can be turned around in a hurry. Benning was formally introduced as the team’s 11th general manager at a noonhour news conference Friday at Rogers Arena.

He said a search for a new head coach will begin almost immediately and did not sound like he planned to completely overhaul the team’s roster. “I believe in our core players,” Benning said. “They’re high-character people …

We are going to try and help them out by having more depth on our roster and playing four lines. We need to hire the right coach. That will be an important decision for us going forward. “Some of the players, for whatever reason, just didn’t have a good season last year.

It’s a good team, it’s a talented team and I feel confident that these guys are going to have a good year next year.” Benning said he has already compiled a list of head-coaching candi-

dates and hopes to begin interviews next week.

Benning, most recently an assistant general manager with the Boston Bruins, comes to the Canucks with a strong background in player development. “I started from the ground up,” Benning said. “I started as a part-time scout, then I went to a full-time scout, then director of amateur scouting and then director of player personnel to assistant GM. I learned every step of the way. I feel like at this point I am ready.
