Calling all Skaters, Cyclists and Budding Street Artists! (See Poster on Front Cover!!)

An event aimed at encouraging young people to get involved with the community and make their mark in a new graffiti mural is being held at Minster Skate Park on Saturday 22 September, from 11am to 4pm. Amy Organised by Kent Police Community Support Officer Adrian Semi-retired!! Butterworth, the event will see skaters, cyclists, boarders and other users of the skate park team up with artists to create new murals in the area. Brenda PCSO Butterworth said: ‘While on patrol in Minster, I noticed the graffiti around the skate park was in need of a re-vamp. It is mostly tags and abusive words. While graffiti is part and parcel of having a skate park, it doesn’t really reflect the talented Diane individuals who use the facility. ‘With the full support of Minster Parish Council, which owns the skate park, we want young people to come forward and help paint the area. Diane ‘Thanks to funding from our two local Kent County Councillors Emma Dawson and Liz Hurst, we have been working with a national charity called Fixers, who have created new designs to be painted around the park. Diana ‘The street artists from Fixers will be at the event and everyone is welcome to attend to take part in the graffiti session. ‘As part of my role as PCSO, I’m keen to support initiatives which are beneficial to the community and provide a positive and safe environment for young people.’ Kevin Equipment and art materials will be provided. Minster Parish Council has kindly agreed to provide the refreshments for those taking part. There will also be Urban Music DJs providing entertainment during the event which runs from 11am to 4pm and is open to all ages. Ray

JONATHON COLE CELEBRATES 50 YEARS AT W.S. COLE & SON “Its hard to believe that fifty years have passed since I was encouraged to join the family firm and should I just be starting today I would have no hesitation in doing the same thing. Both my father and grandfather wanted to ensure that the next generation would take over so I was duly instructed to assist on my first death at a private residence in Upstreet in January 1966. On passing the house now, I often glance up at it and remember those early days. I began working full time in the family business after leaving school in 1968. W.S. Cole & Son was then both builders and “undertakers” as were many established family firms. My father insisted I had a trade and I qualified from college as a Master Plumber. I spent many years building and plumbing interspersed with funeral work. I also became a master of the quick change having to quickly remove overalls and change into frock coat and top hat to direct a funeral. Today, the business is purely funerals which is just as well as I wouldn’t have time to incorporate building work too! I learnt the way to look after the bereaved families, understanding to paperwork requirements needed to allow a funeral to take place, I travelled the length and breadth of the country to collect the deceased, who had died away from home. I was proud to arrange my father’s funeral when he died in 2003. We used to hire a hearse and limousines from Glynn’s Garage in Ramsgate but when Peter Bradley retired, we, along with other local funeral directors bought our own vehicles. When my father Bernard Cole died suddenly, I found myself holding the reins with little preparation, so there was a steep learning curve to understand the intricacies of running a business. In 2007 W.S. Cole moved from Monkton to newly built premises in the next village of Minster. I enjoyed the new challenge of planning and helping to build our new premises to exact specifications to make a more comfortable environment for our clients to arrange their loved one’s Funeral. I like being in the village centre and welcome the many visitors who pop in for a chat and a cuppa! I have been involved in funerals at sea (off Margate), burials on the deceased’s private land, funerals in Canterbury Cathedral and a few years ago took the deceased to Ireland to conduct a funeral in her home town. Since the days when my great grandfather and grandfather operated, there have been many and varied changes in the funeral business, many

for the better. Where it was once common practice to take the deceased into their home for a few days prior to the funeral, it is now a rare occurrence. I am increasingly frustrated for the families by the delays which seem to have become the norm when paperwork required prior to a funeral is not forthcoming! I really enjoy my role as funeral director in East Kent, where I was born and have lived all my life. Many of the families who come to us are well known to me. I also enjoy meeting new families, often now from different cultural backgrounds. Apart from a few weeks away over the last fifty years, I have been on call twenty-four hours a day. Funerals today are now often more a celebration of life and the event can be as different as the individuals and families involved. After fifty years in the Funeral business, I learn something new every day. I am fortunate in having a great team at W.S. Cole and along with my wife, Nicolette and son Christopher, Grant our manager and admin staff Iris and Vanessa (who usually manage to keep me in order) I enjoy the challenge of organising funerals to meet the individual needs of those we support. KEEPING YOU SAFE By PCSO 56550 Adrian Butterworth

Welcome to this month’s input. Here are some tips to help us return items if located that have been lost or stolen. If you have any items that are of particular value sentimental or otherwise. Take a photograph of it and keep it recorded in a safe place, on a memory stick or disc. This could be small items such as jewellery or larger items like bicycles. This is to help identify it in the event that the item is lost or stolen. As you can imagine if I were to go into a jeweller and ask if they had a gold ring with a diamond in it they would ask if I could describe it better. A photograph paints a thousand words and will help in any identification. You can also mark your property with an ultra violet pen. This is a pen that will mark your items invisibly but can be read when passed under an ultra violet light. The information required is your post code and house number this will be unique to your address. It will not prevent the item being taken but will assist in its return to the rightful owner should it be recovered. Mobile phone details should also be recorded for reference: phone make and model, number and IMEI number. If you notice anyone acting suspiciously contact the police on 999 or 101. For further advice and guidance ask to speak to your PCSO.

THANK YOU Many of you know I am involved with various events and organisations in the area. The most recent of which are Minster Show and Louie’s Helping Hands. I do put a lot of time and effort into anything I’m involved in but there is no way I could do that on my own. I have so much support from friends, family and the village of Minster, every time I ask for help whether it’s for raffle prizes, buying tickets, helpers, venues, printing or anything else there is always someone who comes up trumps. I wouldn’t be able to do half of this without Clive allowing me to use Attwells as a base to store, drop off or sell. Jenny is always there to back me up whenever she can, so this is just to say thank you to all of you for being part of the team, it really is much appreciated. Karen Brazil

MINSTER ARMBOUTS-CAPPEL TWINNING ASSOCIATION Tempus Fugit, here we are with September’s issue already and our last report was submitted in July before the Minster Show. However, we feel that we should just mention a couple of things about the Show. Several of our French friends came across and were very impressed with the varied activities that take place on the day. They were particularly intrigued by the Show Tent and the different exhibits and the local skills on display in the arts and craft section. They have an Arts and Crafts Show each year and they always invite us the send over some entries. Perhaps for next year we could send an even bigger selection of our local skills. St Mildred the giant was also resurrected for the Show and two of our committee, Malcom and John gallantly pushed her for the entire length of the Parade.

MINSTER SHOW GRAND DRAW How lucky are we to have such fantastic support for our Minster Show Draw, 66 prizes all donated by local businesses, villagers and friends of the show? You are amazing and we made a profit of £981 which of course is a massive help towards putting on next year’s show and keeping our gates prices down. Thank you to everyone who bought tickets and congratulations to all our winners (result board available to view in Attwells). Although I organise the draw there is absolutely no way I could do it without the dedicated and continued support from my team of ticket sellers, ticket writers and folders, such a gutty job but I really appreciate this help from family, friends and acquaintances. I hope you’re as proud of yourselves as I am of you all. Thank you xx Karen Brazil MOBILE HOME IN EDGAR ROAD On the 6th August MM saw a message on Nextdoor asking local residents in the Freeman’s Road/Edgar Road area to leave enough room the following morning for the delivery of a large mobile home into Edgar Road. Apparently Marianne, who had written the message, was having it installed in her back garden to house her partially disabled daughter and her small family, so as they will be able to help and support each other for the foreseeable future. We put out a plea for some photos and Alan Green of Birchington was kind enough to send us those he had taken, some of which we show below. So thank you Alan and we wish Marianne, her daughter and her family all the best for the future.

Minster Matters MINSTER SHOW

Thank you to all those who supported the Minster Show this year. We are aware that many people and exhibits were affected by the weather so entries and visitors were down. However, the atmosphere was calm and everyone looked like they were having an enjoyable afternoon. If you did enjoy it and would like to contribute to its continuation please consider joining the Committee! I hear a groan, but we meet once a month, prepare the marquee on the Friday before the Show and clear the grounds on Sunday morning. During the day we move chairs, put up gazebos, park cars, clear bins and clear the Marquee. The AGM is Friday 19 October, at 7.30pm, in the Neighbourhood Centre (upstairs) so come and meet us and see how you can help keep our Village Show going. Thank you, Dominique Vaughan Chair

CIGARETTE CARDS WANTED FROM 1920s-30s My name is Dave Lowery and I have lived in the village my whole life, some of you will already know me. Last year I had a stroke and as a result I am now mainly confined to my home for long periods of time. To fill these long hours alone I have taken up collecting cigarette cards from the 1920s and 30s. These cards were originally issued free inside each packet sold. Eventually around the end of WW2 and with the knowledge that smoking could damage your health the cards were left out. However, with many millions issued, there are still many cards out there, stuck in the back of drawers, in attics and many other places. So, I am asking for your help if you are able to add to my collection by passing on to me any cards you may have and were wondering what to do with them. I am not just looking for full sets; single cards or small collections are also required that I may be able to add to the part sets I currently have. If you can help you can contact me on 07544 563 435 so I can arrange to collect, or you can drop them off at my home. Whilst I am not a wealthy person if you require payment we can discuss. Many thanks in anticipation of your help, Dave Lowery

Minster Matters Minster Parish Council Meetings Summary of Key Points 3rd July, 2018

● Community Warden, Aaron Kluibenschadl, reported that the travellers on Hengist Way had moved on, leaving rubbish and damage to fencing. The gypsies at Cottington Road, however, had left the area clear. ● There have been reports of scrambler bikes on Marsh Farm Road but as yet it has not been possible to identify them. Any information to assist in this would be welcome. ● Anti-social behaviour has been taking place in the cemetery and efforts are being made to identify the youths concerned. ● PCSO Adrian Butterworth reported that the police had received 48 calls to the Minster area in the previous month, including criminal damage to walls in Tothill Street and reports of traveller encampments. ● District Councillor Pugh reported that he has been assisting residents in St. Mary’s Road to clarify the use of outside space at the flats. He updated on the recent TDC Cabinet meeting relating to the draft Local Plan, where Option 2 was put forward for full council consideration; this excludes the airport so sets out further developments required to build sufficient houses.

September 2018 the consultation booklets and everyone is urged to respond before the recommendations are published in the Autumn. ● The Clerk reported that the consultation on the proposed yellow lines in the village had started and notices were displayed in the locations. ● Cllr Vaughan suggested that an A4 walking map of the village, showing main points of interest, would be useful for visitors. Cllr Goodman had already designed and printed a similar leaflet so members felt it could be reviewed and updated. It was agreed that Cllrs Vaughan, Day and Owen would update the leaflet. ● Members agreed the quote of £241.77 to reprint 300 copies of the green Minster Remembered Book. Cllr. Owen agreed to prepare the artwork. ● Cllr. Quittenden confirmed that a new van had been purchased for use by the Parish Council at a cost of £12,995. The old van will be sold for spares. ● Questions from the public included reports of a blocked footpath to the north of the Scouts Hut, and councillors agreed to deal with this. The Clerk has a map showing landowners in the Parish which would help in identifying who may be responsible for some of the footpaths; Cllr. Bailey will assist in updating this.

● The Chairman reported that a recent seminar on the new Data Protection regulations had reassured her that the parish council do not have a great deal to do in order to be compliant. The computers had been encrypted by Cllr. Owen so we now need to address our retention of data.

● Concerns were expressed about London Boroughs purchasing large numbers of houses in Thanet but it was pointed out that there is no power to prevent them from buying property anywhere so TDC cannot prevent this. Others agreed that there is a need for affordable housing for local people.

● Councillors had recently attended consultation events in relation to the Big Conversation on Rural transport hosted by KCC. Stagecoach and Arriva provide the vast majority of bus services in Kent, and KCC fund 3% of them. Some services are no longer viable so we now need a fresh approach. Three proposals are in

● Comment was also made about the option for the Draft Local Plan, which allows 2 years for the DCO to be considered in relation to the airport; if this fails then there will be an additional 3700 houses in addition to those already planned.

Kate’s Puddings – what’s cooking? Lemon Meringue Pie is my husband’s all-time favourite, and nobody can make it as well as his mother. There are many different recipes, but hers is definitely the best – a light pastry base, tangy, sharp lemon centre and a crisp meringue top which breaks to a softness underneath…. Rich Shortcrust Pasty 8oz/225g plain flour 4oz/100g butter 1 egg, beaten Pinch of salt Meringue Top 3 egg whites

Lemon Filling 2tbsps cornflour slaked wth 1tbsp water ½ pint/300ml hot water 4oz/110g caster sugar 2 lemons, fine zest and juice 1oz/25g butter 3 egg yolks

6oz/150g caster sugar

Preheat the oven to 200 deg C. Make the pastry and bake blind. Allow the case to cool. (You can do this part the day before) Turn the oven to 160 deg C. Heat the water in a pan. Slake the cornflour in 1 tbsp cold water, and then add the hot water to it, before putting it all back into the pan. Add the lemon rind and juice, then the sugar. As the lemon mixture comes to the boil and thickens, add the butter and mix it in, then take the pan off the heat and add the eggs, one by one, mixing well (otherwise you get scrambled egg). If it is not already thick, put the pan back onto a gentle heat and stir the mixture until it is thick. Pour it into the pastry case. Whisk the egg whites until stiff, then add the sugar slowly. Completely cover the pie with the meringue, making sure that none of the lemon filling can be seen. Bake for about 10-15 minutes or so until the meringue has hardened on the top but not browned – if it is starting to brown, turn the oven down further and put some foil over the top of the pie. Helen usually turns the oven off and leaves the meringue longer. For hundreds more delicious recipes go to katespuddings.co.uk

Thanet Community Support Partnership – Linking together to Support Older People

Central Referrals Service – 01843 609337 TCSP runs a referrals service for older people requiring various types of support found within the local community. We are a Partnership of 13 charitable organisations operating in Thanet, which means we can normally refer you, or a loved one, to the right people. Services provided by the Partnership include: Befriending; Independent Advocacy and Advice; Wheelchair Loan; Handyman; Hairdressing; Foot Care; Dementia-Friendly Social Groups; Support for Sight or Hearing Impaired People; Transport to Medical Appointments; and much more. By acting as the central point of contact, we aim to reduce the anxiety and frustration caused by having to root around to find the right support, or worse, being batted from one organisation to another. Please call Caroline on 01843 609337 if you think you, or someone you know, need assistance from the referrals service. Thanet Over Fifties Forum

“TOFFS” for short, is another project of TCSP’s, designed to raise the voice of older people resident in Thanet on both local and national issues that impact on the quality of our lives. Membership of TOFFS is absolutely FREE – the only criterion being that you are 50 or above. We hold Forum meetings roughly every two months, and bring in top-quality guest speakers on a variety of topics, such as: health and social care; transport; age discrimination in employment; pensions and benefits; cyber-crime and scam awareness; environmental causes (e.g. concerns over excessive use of plastics), and much more besides. Our next meeting is on Wednesday 19 September, from 1:30pm-4:30pm, at the Gap Centre, Queens Road Baptist Church, Broadstairs – where Robinson Alfree and the Pensions Advisory Service will be speaking on estate planning and pensions issues respectively. To find out more, please contact Pauline at the Thanet Volunteer Bureau on 01843 609337 or email her at toffs@thanetvolunteerbureau.co.uk. Thanet Good Neighbours Service (Befriending) Last year we were delighted to welcome under the TCSP banner the Thanet Good Neighbours Service – a volunteer befriending scheme which had previously been run by the Royal Voluntary Service. Since then, this project has gone from strength to strength, with over 80 successful befriender-client matches across Thanet at the time of writing. Our service is open to anybody aged 60+, and for just £30 a year, our befrienders can help by: visiting you for a cup of tea and a chat; going shopping with or for you; going for a stroll or short trip, say o the café; decluttering; dog-walking; or even simply regular chats over the phone.

Minster Matters

23

If you would like to join the service, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us on 01843 609335 or at thanetgns@thanetvolunteerbureau.co.uk. As you might imagine, “demand tends to outstrip supply” for the Good Neighbours Service and this means we are always on the look-out for kind, friendly volunteers who might be interested in making a huge difference as a befriender within their community. If this might be you, we would love to hear from you – simply contact us via the same details as above.

Socials and Day Trips We also put on weekly social gatherings called “Your Time”, which are aimed at promoting social inclusion among older people who live locally but are at risk of experiencing loneliness. Join us every Wednesday from 1pm-3pm at the Centenary Hall, Hardres Street, Ramsgate, for some fun activities and good company. We ask for £2 which helps towards tea and cake and the activity of the week, which could be anything from chair-based exercises, to live music, talks, bingo and quizzes, or arts and crafts. We have also started running “Your Time Day Trips”, which are already proving phenomenally popular. Since March we have done Sunday Lunch at the Dog & Duck in Plucks Gutter, Afternoon Tea in Birchington, and a River Trip to Fordwich, to name a few. Transport is provided by the Thanet Community Transport Association. If you would be interested in joining the Your Time family, please get in touch with Claire on 01843 609336 and she’ll be happy to tell you more. Don’t miss our “Silver Sunday” event, too, which makes a return after two years away. It’ll be taking place on 7 October from 12pm-4pm, at Dreamland and other venues, featuring workshops, a wealth of community groups, an afternoon tea dance, and much, much more. Call us on Thanet 609336 for more information. You can follow TCSP’s progress and find out more about all of the projects mentioned above, by visiting www.thanetcommunitysupport.org.uk, calling us at 01843 609336, or looking us up on social media @ThanetCommunity, on both Twitter and Facebook.

MINSTER PLAYHOUSE PROMPT CORNER - Our Autumn Play Rehearsals are going really well with a lot of laughter and fun. Ticket sales are going very well too, but if you are wanting a seat near the front it would be a good idea to secure it now! The play is centred around a funeral wake and the relationships of the people involved and points up with broad humour their human frailties. It is very funny and we look forward to seeing other plays from this pair of authors. We are delighted to be showcasing a “home grown” play, and hope that you will come along to support our two playwrights. This play will run in the Village Hall from the 19th to the 22nd September, at 7.30pm and tickets are still only £8. The Box Office is open on 07501 894 381 Please come along and support the Playhouse while having a good night out. Our Pantomime for 2018 This will be , an old favourite with a giant and a cow as well as all the other pantomime fun. It will run from Wednesday 28th November to Saturday 1st December, in the Village Hall, at 7.30pm every evening, with a Matinee on the Saturday. The Year to Come Next year is a momentous one for Minster Playhouse because it will be our fortieth anniversary! Yes, forty continuous years of plays, pantomimes, revues and evenings of One Act plays. I dealt last month with the improvements that we have created to enhance our performances over that time and we continue to attract new talent to our stage to keep you entertained. More information on how we shall be marking this milestone in the coming issues. And finally, this week a small puzzle. If you do cryptic crosswords, you should get this right away! Join up really easily. Keep thinking over Margate children’s zoo’s angry kangaroos! Initially, you can find the name of my most faithful reader. info@minsterplayhouse.co.uk
