SCHOOL VOUCHERS Attwells Newsagents are again collecting all varieties of supermarket school vouchers. So if you have any spare then please drop them into the shop EDITORIAL

MM CLASSIFIEDS This is your chance to get something for nothing from us here at MM. We’re offering you free space for your small classifieds. So, do you have something to sell, or is there an item you’d like to find? We take both offered and wanted small ads here. Just jot them down, email them to us or leave us a note at the library, we’ll be pleased to print them for you.

Radio spot on Academy FM was a bit of a disaster for me last month as I turned up at the studio without any magazines or my crib sheets. Howard made me sit on the naughty step, with a reminder that I must do Brenda better this month. Luckily I had taken along Stuart and Mark who got a good plug in for their fundraising events in aid of Children with Cancer. More on their exploits in the London Marathon next month. We also had 2 of the cast of Calendar Girls come along to promote their Diane play which is on at the Village Hall in May, so it wasn’t an entirely wasted journey. I’m expecting Alex, from the Twinning, and maybe Stuart and Mark to come along with me this month. Alex to promote the Twinning Association Nora and Stuart and Mark to give us an update on both their run and how the funds are mounting up. Thank you to everyone who sent in an entry for the Air Show Tickets, I was pleased to find so many envelopes waiting for me when I got back from holiday. A winner has been drawn and I can announce them to be Mr. R. Stone of Monkton Road. Well done to you and you should receive your tickets in the post direct from Heritage Events. The answers for those who are still scratching their heads were as follows: 1/ ‘Arise to Protect’; 2/ Fire Services Central Training Establishment; 3/ G-VLCN; 4/ KLM - Fokker 70 - Schipol, Amsterdam; 5/ Any of the events listed at www.heritage-events.co.uk/. We were quite particular on what we accepted as correct answers especially to question 2 which had to read as the answer above. Some told us KLM were using Boeing 737’s but their official website says they are using Fokker 70’s and is was definitely a Fokker 70 that made the first official flight into Manston so this was the only answer we accepted. Thank you to Heritage Events for helping us stage this competition and for so generously giving us the tickets, maybe we can do it all again the next time you hold an Air Show here!! The new Minster Business Association looks like it‘s now coming to fruition so if you run any type of business, however large or small, in Minster or any of the surrounding villages, you’d do well to sign up to the association and enjoy the benefits of membership. Registration forms are available from Attwells Newsagents, Minster Matters, or via email from enquiries@southbarngifts.com and the next open meeting is the ‘Registration Meeting’ on Thursday 9th May, 7.30pm at the Sports Pavilion, Recreation Ground, St Mildred’s Road, Minster. Hope to see you there! Well, that’s it, I’ve said just about all I had to say, except to just send my condolences to those who have lost loved ones or 2L/8 family members recently, especially to those I know personally who have submitted reports of family members who have recently passed away, my www.minstersalon.com thoughts are with 61, High St you all at this sad Minster time. with our Tel: Just the usual Junior Stylist question: Where’s on production of this advert Zac??

BEWARE A SCAM! It has come to our notice that there is a possible scammer using Minster Matters as an ‘in’ to get unsuspecting advertisers to part with some of their hard earned cash. One of our regular advertisers reported to us he had received a phone call purporting to come from an Anti-Bullying Group who said they were working with us to promote anti-bullying and would he like to be part of the campaign by taking advertising space in a national journal to complement an article they were running with us here at Minster Matters. Luckily he smelled a rat when he asked for the name of the journal and the group’s phone number as it showed on his phone as ‘withheld’. He said they refused to give him this information but then asked for a cheque for £150 which he politely refused. This is definitely a scam, we at Minster Matters would not enter into anything like this, so please be warned, if anyone like this approaches you and mentions our name you can be sure it isn’t legit!!

Last Call for Calendar Girls! As you may know, your village drama group, Minster Playhouse, will be staging Tim Firth’s hugely successful play, Calendar Girls in the Village Hall on Wednesday May 15th, through to Saturday May 18th. The play tells the true story of a group of women from a Yorkshire village Women’s Institute who do something a little different for their WI calendar and bare all, so as to raise money to buy a settee for the visitor’s room of their local hospital. The fund-raising is in order to commemorate the husband of one of the ladies, who dies of Leukaemia. The rapport between the women creates some hilarious comic scenes, and also, at times, some heart-rending moments of poignancy as her friends combine to support the bereaved widow. Calendar Girls is one of the few plays in which you will have tears in your eyes of both sadness and of joy. Minster Playhouse will be donating part of the proceeds from ticket and program sales to Lymphoma and Leukaemia Research, the original Calendar Girls supported charity. Tickets are still available for each of the evening performances, but unfortunately, the Saturday Matinee show is sold out. Please call the Box Office on 01843 220208 to reserve your seat – they are going fast. Last Call for Calendar Girls, but the first announcement that Minster Playhouse will be presenting Oscar Wilde’s classic farce, The Importance of Being Earnest, on Wednesday September 25th through to Saturday 28th. Further announcements coming soon to village notice boards, shop windows and Minster Matters.

Cliffsend Shop Association is a non-profit volunteer organisation which runs the Cliffsend shop for the benefit of the community. We have a wonderful army of volunteers who man the shop, and other volunteers sit on the committee who do the behind the scenes work to enable the shop to operate. Sadly our Treasurer is stepping down for a well-earned retirement at the forthcoming AGM on 7th June, which means we are desperately seeking a replacement volunteer Treasurer before that date. The position entails general book keeping duties including checking delivery notes, invoices, raising cheques, updating stock price list with current prices, dealing with accountants at year end etc. If you are interested in becoming an important member of the Cliffsend Shop Association please contact Ann Cox on 07982 266959. If you are interested in working in, or helping with, the shop please contact Peter Corley on 07528 752974.

MINSTER-IN-THANET WI Tuesday 9th April at 7.30 saw the opening of Minster WI’s monthly meeting with the usual rendition of Jerusalem. President, Marion Rose, welcomed everyone and, after various announcements, reminded members to read the Minutes and Treasurer’s report of the March meeting, displayed on the Board’s table. Marion Bullard then introduced David Fagg from the Kent, Surrey & Sussex Air Ambulance Trust. After his most informative account of the valuable work carried out by the Trust, it was very clear that the inhabitants of Kent, and the other two counties, owe the Trust a great deal. Following member’s questions Jane Hammond, on behalf of the members, thanked him for a really interesting talk. After refreshments, Marion requested suggestions for activities in the second half of the monthly meetings to prevent things becoming “samey”. Suggestions were also requested for activities at Coffee & Chat mornings (held on 3rd Thursday every month) and for venue ideas and helpers for the Sunshine Club outings. She particularly thanked Dorothy Butterworth for her hard work in organising those outings in the past. Marion reminded the meeting of the special production of Calendar Girls on Saturday 18th May at the Village Hall, when our WI is providing cream teas for the matinee performance. She then outlined details of the Garden Morning & Treasure Hunt on Saturday 8th June @ 10-10.30 am with a Ploughman’s Lunch at The Old Schools @ 12-12.30 pm ish. Tickets are £5 including lunch. The event is a change from the usual June Coffee morning and the Committee hope this important fund-raising event will be an enjoyable success. Next month, on 7th May, is our Resolutions Meeting when we do not have a speaker. Members will discuss “the decline of our high streets and town centres”. With a show of hands everyone selected their choice of refreshment on that evening – either wine and cheese or cake and a hot drink! April’s meeting closed, after an amusing story from the President, at 9.55 pm.

Well done everyone who contributed to the success of this event. · Christine Lynch for being Quiz master and for her excellent catering skills · Royal British Legion for the use of their facilities · Vicki for her scrumptious cakes · Carol and Malcolm Bubb for promoting the raffle · Everyone who participated and · Those who kindly donated prizes The quiz had a French flavour to it and the evening ended in a tie breaker. Carol and Malcolm’s team just took the edge with Alex and Dale’s team missing out by a breath. However, it has spurred them on to return to the next quiz which we hope to organise for October time, where they have designs for victory themselves!! 19 May, Anniversary Day in France: A full coach is all set for the off for a day of musical entertainment, fun and lunch, kindly provided by our hosts in Armbouts Cappel. You can still join us if you wish to travel separately, but we still need to know numbers for catering needs. (Ring Carol: 07745 683 466) 9 June, Fun Day. Minster Rec, Midday, Free Entry: I’m sure this date is already in your diary. On the day there will be a bar and refreshments, music, a car boot sale (Pitches £5 pre-booked or £7 on the day).Car boots are always popular, so pop into your attic, sort out your unwanted goods and turn them into ££££s. We have Joey the Clown doing animal balloons, the possibility of face painting, bouncy castle, a bowling game, a superb raffle, plant stall and more. We have acquired some medieval type stocks and we’re looking for a willing person to be the victim! Sorry, the volunteer! Do you know some fun loving individuals prepared to do 15 minute stints each? How about booking a pitch yourself, maybe sell some handicrafts? The prices are the same as the boot sale pitches. We advise everyone to bring a brolly – not because we think it will rain, but because we have a competition for the best dressed brolly. (and besides, it may come in handy!) Ideally the winner of each category (children and adults) will be judged for their most innovative hand made decorations. Judging will hopefully be done by our French friends. We also are trying to arrange press coverage for the afternoon, so do your best. Please ring Bernie if you wish to provide any musical talent: 07814 214 993 Ring Alex for booking any pitches: 07903 882 640 Call Carol for stock volunteers: 07745 683 466 Thank you for all interested parties. Merci beaucoup.

We would like to thank the person who found our cat, which had unfortunately been run over and had not survived her injuries. She had been missing for a week and we had been searching for her during that time. Every pet has a loving family and our children have been very worried and upset. We felt so grateful that someone had taken the time to leave her body at Eagle Vets, who then kindly looked after her and contacted us. Once again thank you to everyone involved. SPECIAL THANKS TO REV. CANON BOB COLES It is with sadness but immense gratitude that I write this piece. Bob has been our Priest in Charge for the past seventeen years and has become a huge part of our village community. We will miss him as he now leaves us to enjoy his well deserved retirement. During his time in Minster and with the Wantsum Group of Churches, we have seen our regular Sunday congregations swell and young families grow and mature, with children starting at Sunday School, going on to Confirmation, and some being married by Bob. He has certainly had a spiritual influence on hundreds of children; becoming a regular visitor to the village school and officiating at many assemblies and school church services over the years and the children all know him as “Bob”. Bob has been instrumental in bringing together the community for Remembrance Sunday too, working closely with the British Legion in Minster and the Salvation Army and other churches. We saw the church full to bursting last November and this is something that we hope will continue. Bob has also been a key figure in the organisation of the annual Open Gardens event, something that we now enjoy as a village. This year Open Gardens is on 15th/16th June and we hope that it will be well supported as in previous years. Over the past seventeen years many improvements have been made to the fabric of St Mary’s Church including the installation of an effective heating system making services such as Remembrance are a much more enjoyable experience. The ongoing work on the church building has also assured that the building will continue to serve the local community in future. None of this would have been possible without the tireless dedication of Bob and former Churchwarden Paul Willins. The 5th May is Rogation Sunday. The custom of “beating the bounds” was something that Bob re-introduced and is a wonderful day walking through the four parishes of the Wantsum Group stopping for food and prayer along the way. If you would like to join us or want to know more please see details at the back of church or in Minster Matters. As a Community we certainly have a lot to acknowledge and thank Bob for. As Church family we will try to continue all the good work that he has done. All services at Minster will continue as usual with clergy and Lay Readers from the Wantsum Group and some visiting priests taking the services. For Weddings, Baptisms and Funerals please direct all enquiries to 01843 821250. Finally, we all wish Bob well for a very long, happy and healthy Retirement. May God be with him always. Sue Jezzard - Church Warden, St. Mary-the-Virgin Church

New Beginnings for The Bell Inn - Your Support Needed To the editor, Minster Matters When we arrived in Minster in 2005, the Bell was a well-run and popular pub, and a credit to its landlords, Alex and Ian Young. Since their retirement its fortunes have declined and most of its clientèle have moved to other pubs, especially to the newly refurbished and excellent New Inn. However, this village used to support three pubs easily, and the economic climate and the smoking ban notwithstanding, I believe that it still can. However, if the Bell does not get some support from the village it may well close for good, and I doubt that there is anyone in Minster who would like to see that site vacant permanently. The Bell has re-opened under the care of temporary landlords, Dave and Alli, who are much more in the spirit of the Youngs and their predecessors, and are trying to take the Bell back to its heyday. In the interest of the Village it would be sensible to give these good people some active support in their efforts and give the Bell, and its food, a try. MAD HATTERS TEA SHOP It was so sad to see the Gossip Shop's closed doors. What are we all going to do to meet pals as before. Then a wonderful idea, Julie and Bonnie evolved. The Mad Hatters' Tea Shop - and way and behold. In the little cosy room of The Saddler Inn. You can meet your old pals, with a smile and a grin. The coffee is good, and the cakes and food delicious of which to partake. This morning I sat with my cuppa and demolished two scrumptious cakes. Yvonne Chapman

Jean Meek and Jackie Wetherilt met with their work colleagues’, friends and family at The New Inn for their “Leaving Do” and were presented with a very special cake (pictured) and smart travel bags for their excursions, to wherever, now they are retired. Everyone enjoyed the relaxed and happy evening in a pleasant congenial venue. They will be much missed in Minster.

Are you wild about your garden…? If so, Kent Wildlife Trust would like to hear about it through its annual wildlife-friendly gardening awards scheme - run in partnership with some local authorities. The scheme is free to enter and open to any type of garden in Kent, regardless of size - from a balcony to a baronial estate; courtyard to community allotment. Even a group of adjoining gardens could enter as a wildlife-friendly neighbourhood. Kent Wildlife Trust’s volunteer advisors aim to visit as many entrants as possible during the season. They may recommend the gardens for bronze, silver or gold certificates; but more importantly they give tips and advice as to how the gardens can be made even more wildlife- friendly. Gold winners also receive a coveted ‘blue plaque’ and may be put forward for a “special award” such as: ● Best School Wildlife Garden; Best Community Wildlife Project; or Best Water-wise Wildlife Garden - all sponsored by Southern Water ● Best Dragon Garden sponsored by Kent Reptile & Amphibian Group ● Best Garden for Bats sponsored by Kent Bat Group ● Best Wildlife Churchyard sponsored by Kent Gods Acre Partnership …and new for 2013: ● The Garden with the Best Buzz! sponsored by the Bumblebee Conservation Trust Certificates and plaques will be presented at special events run in conjunction with partners during October and November. Entry forms are available either online at www.kentwildlifetrust.org.uk or by telephoning 01622 662012. The closing date for entries is 30th June. We are also keen to hear from gardeners/enthusiasts who would be interested in training to become volunteer wildlife gardening advisors. For more information please contact maureen.rainey@kentwildlife.org.uk or telephone 01622 662012. PHOTO: Just some of the coveted ‘blue plaques’ © Kent Wildlife Trust Kent Wildlife Trust is the leading wildlife conservation charity for Kent and Medway. Since its formation in 1958 we have worked to make Kent a better place for both wildlife and people. We manage five visitor centres and 60 nature reserves covering 7,500 acres, and supported by over 31,000 members and around 1,000 registered volunteers.

LONDON MARATHON 2013, FUND RAISING FOR CHILDREN WITH CANCER. Mark Padfield and Stuart Lamb have been training hard all year to run the London Marathon to raise funds for Children with Cancer on Sunday 21st April 2013. By the time this goes to print they should have both completed the run. We will catch up with them in next month's addition to see how they got on, on the day and see how much they’ve managed to raise for such a worthy cause. On Saturday the 30th April the lads with help from Julie, Gary and Christine from the Royal British Legion held a quiz night. The evening was a huge success and there were 25 teams who took part in the fun. The highlight of the evening was the Charity Auction of a signed Stoke City football shirt which was won by Mr Colin L Sackett, who won the auction at £210 and then kindly upped the donation to £250 after the hammer, had fallen. On the night we managed to raise a staggering £1600, so we would like to thank all of the kind generous villagers, friends and family for coming together and raising such an impressive amount. With special thanks to all the local businesses and people who also donated such great raffle and auction prizes. On Saturday 6th April Mark and I organized a Charity Golf Day that was held at St Augustine's Golf Club. Every one of the 84 golfers taking part had a fantastic day, the sun was out and we managed to raise £3385. We would like to thank Kevin Smith and Steve Cliffe from Cliffe’s Butchers in Minster for all their support and help on the day. Without their support the day would not have been a success. Our running total for Children with Cancer stands at £4985 so we are already over our target of £4000 which we are so happy with. If anyone would still like to sponsor us then you can use the link below to do so online. uk.virginmoneygiving.com/team/Padfieldandlamb Thanks so much for everyone's support; it has been overwhelming! Mark and Stuart

May 2013 FAREWELL TO TONY (ANTHONY)

SLAUGHTER Tony, who ran W.G. Slaughter Jeweller and Watchmaker in Monkton Rd from the mid-1970s until 2003, died on 29 March. (His father, William, opened and ran the same business from the early 1930s.) The funeral was held at Barham Crematorium on 23rd April. LOCALISM IN ACTION So the Government and the Planners keep pushing the idea of “Localism” and we all sit back to wait for someone else to make it happen. In the village of Minster there is no such complacency. The members of its Community Led Plan Steering Group have been fired with enthusiasm to get their Parish Plan up and running and during last week a group of volunteers visited all houses in Minster - 1600 of them, to remind everyone to get their completed Questionnaires returned so that the data collected can be analysed, made sense of and form the basis of an explanation of “how the village works now and sees itself developing during the next ten years.” The cheerful collectors in their hi-viz jackets thoroughly illustrated the good cross section of the community with youth, Parish Councillors, grandparents etc. all collecting….. More than that and in order to save the considerable cost of having the data analysed by outside professionals, several members of the group have offered their expertise in data crunching and will be doing the job themselves. Amazingly, they will also be preparing much of the presentation material for the Plan themselves. The finished document will surely be truly representative of very local input and Kent County Councillor Charles Hibberd has said it may become the future blueprint for other Kent Parish Plans. A BIG THANK YOU TO EVERYONE IN THE VILLAGE WHO SHARED IN THIS EXPERIENCE AND TOOK THE TROUBLE TO COMPLETE THEIR QUESTIONNAIRES! Minster Community Led Steering Group

MINSTER MATTERS VOLUNTEER REQUIRED Do you fancy getting involved with the production of this magazine? We have made this plea previously but so far we have not had anyone wishing to take up the post. We are in need of someone to come on board to assist in setting out the magazine articles, getting those we have been sent to fit in the available space, whilst giving priority to those we consider of interest to our readers. Amy, who does this at present, is willing to help train anyone who may volunteer. It would suit someone who has some computer skills and a PC at home, with a willingness and ability to learn. The position does require you to be available for the weekend that the magazine is prepared for print, which is usually the one following the 3rd Friday of each month, except December. Possibly interested? Then please email either: Ray @ rayowen@gmail.com or Amy @ amkiky@aol.com We’re waiting to hear from you!!

Billy, Phoebe and Niamh at Thanet College. I am always delighted at the response we have from our children at Minster School, when we send out the Thanet Earth Recipe Competition letters. We have been fortunate enough to have had children in the final ‘Cook-off’ for three years now. I would like to say a huge well done to everyone who entered the competition this year. We had lots of fantastic recipes, they all sounded delicious. The judges were very impressed with the standard of entries this year. Billy Vinson, Phoebe Bullard and Niamh O’Shea were all lucky enough to reach the final at Thanet College, and I was lucky enough to be there with them. Billy cooked his ‘Billy’s BBQ Surprise’, which were chicken kebabs and salad. Billy said ‘It was really exciting; it was great fun cooking in a restaurant kitchen. The best part for me was when I put my kebabs under the grill and I watched the top of the grill come down and there were flames going onto the kebabs!’ Niamh impressed the judges with her Tomato and Pepper Tart with cucumber spaghetti salad; she was so confident in the kitchen and produced a fantastic dish. Niamh told me that ‘it was fun; it was exciting to take part in the competition again. I was nervous but also looking forward to it at the same time, because I knew what it is like in the kitchen. The best part was serving my dish to the judges.’ Phoebe won her age category, with her delicious ‘Healthy Heart Warmer’ soup; a yummy vegetable soup with cheesy croutons, Phoebe was really surprised when the judges said she had won and said that she would love to enter the competition again. Phoebe’s soup has been produced as a recipe card and will be in our local Tesco store soon, so keep a look out for it! I was so impressed by the way all the children all cooked their dishes confidently, chatting to the judges when they came to see them preparing the food, and enjoying the experience. Well done to you all and congratulations to Phoebe. Ali Gillatt, Family Liaison Officer, Minster Primary School

Editors this month The “Minster Matters” Editorial Team Year 6 Victorian Day On Monday 15th April Year 6 Minster Primary School had a Victorian day. Mr Marston and Miss Wilkinson pretended that they were old Victorian teachers. Most Year 6 children dressed up as Victorian girls and boys. We each had to bring in a penny to be able to enter the school. If you didn’t bring in a penny you had to wear the dunces hat. Most people did bring in a penny but there were only a few people who didn’t bring in a penny. Both class teachers where really bossy - but they were only pretending - some people even got scared of them but sometimes they couldn’t hold in their laughter. The girls had to sit on a different side to the boys - in Victorian days they normally sat in different classes. In the middle of the day the girls had to go in a class and put a book on their head, to make them walk straight to act like a proper lady. Also the boys went outside to march and walk like a proper man, they also had to do some press ups. We did all this because we are learning about Queen Victoria By Kyla-Marie Dawson and Georgina Graham

Environment Our environment is under threat the smoke that comes out of car’s and factories can be dangerous for the environment because of the gases they make. We are cutting down trees that are very helpful to us because they produce a gas that we need. If we didn’t have rain forests we wouldn’t have many amazing animals like the eye eye it would be extinct so protect the environment not just be careless protect by putting your litter in the bin not the floor! If you see litter pick it up and save the environment right now! By Millie

My Bizarre Pets I love my pets. I have a pet dog called Badger, Bob our stray cat, Pickles our rabbit, Freda our tortoise and Hammy my hamster. Badger our dog is the oldest pet in the house he is 14 and going blind he also has arthritis, but despite his age he’s still like a puppy. Badger loves going on holiday to Devon to go and see the donkeys in the donkey sanctuary. Bob is an adorable cat who is always friendly to others, he first turned up when I was in year 3 when me and my Mum were coming home from school, he’d been walking around our close for ages no one knew who he belonged to, our next door neighbour took him to the vet, no chip so he stayed with us. Pickles our rabbit came to us in February 2012 when my Mum’s first rabbit died. He’s really well behaved and loves coming inside, he loves our dog. Freda’s my Mums tortoise she chases people trying to get their feet she’s really old but still really cute. Last but not least Hammy the hamster, he’s mine and I got him from Pets at Home for my birthday ,he was plain white when I got him but now he’s going ginger. When I first got him he chewed the box he came in and got out. He loves carrots and grapes he’s very spoilt. All my pets have a really good life and are all special to me. By Francesca Martin

Spring Spring is so beautiful it really gives me joy. Seeing all the flowers grow and watching wildlife roam. The flowers bloom and rainbows cross the sky what joy it brings to life. The trees begin to grow their leaves and clouds begin to fade away and blue skies appear. By Annabelle Fleming.

Wobbly Teeth Wobbly teeth are very annoying when you don’t know how to treat them. If you ask your parents to have a look at it then they will pull it out themselves. So if you have a wobbly tooth, don’t ask your mum or dad to pull it out!!(my dad offered to use pliers!!) By Georgina Graham

Arianne’s Sleepover A few weeks ago, my friend Arianne had a sleepover with me and Katrina. We went to Arianne’s house after school and said what we would do, then her parents took us to McDonalds and we were in there on our own! We did mess about a bit! After, back at Arianne’s house, we got ready for bed. Katrina had a gigantic teddy, called Fluffy! Then we put face masks on and painted our nails whilst watching a movie! Falling asleep was a little hard because me and Katrina were not tired but Arianne was! So she fell asleep. It was a pretty crazy night! In the morning we had pancakes and skyped. Then it was time to go home! By Emily Smith

Heinz Beans!! Heinz Beans are very tasty on toast and on their own. Heinz have brought out a new type of beans called Heinz 5 Beans. The new beans are very tasty and come in a black tin. They are called 5 Beans because it has 5 different types of beans in it. By Alice Cox

Do you meet vulnerable people and families who are in housing difficulty? We can help. Kent County Council commissions floating support services in Kent that support vulnerable people with their housing problems. The service is free and covers every district and borough in Kent. Floating support can help for up to a year those people whose housing situation is vulnerable because they are ● facing or threatened with eviction ● Experiencing harassment ● Experiencing or at risk of domestic abuse ● Needing to make a transition to a new tenancy either in the private rented or social rented sector ● Rough sleeping (including sofa surfing) ● Leaving institutional care e.g prison, long stay hospital ● 16/17 years old As well as resolving the immediate problem floating support can help with applying for welfare benefit, budgeting, accessing help or other services, finding work/training and settling into the community. It doesn't matter where or how they are living in Kent; whether they are renting, own their own home or are lodging with relatives, even if they are sleeping rough, we can help. We have a broad range of specialist providers who are able to deliver this important preventative work and we encourage all those who meet parents families and individuals who are in housing difficulty to make use of this free service. People in need can apply themselves or can have a family member or friend apply on their behalf. You can make a referral by filling in the two-sided form on our website at: www.kent.gov.uk/supportingpeople and click on the ‘how to apply’ link in the left-hand column or go along to your local Gateway where staff will be pleased to help. OLD MINSTER PHOTOGRAPHIC EXHIBITION Saturday 4th May, Village Hall, 9.30am - 4.00pm

Did you know ‘Mortons Fork’, back in the 1950’s, was a cafe named ‘The Corner House?’ Restoring the name and renovating the building in line with the 21st Century, The Corner House will offer quality British food, snacks, sharing dishes, freshly ground coffee, Real Ales and guest rooms. The Corner House reclaims its position within the heart of Minster. Matthew Sworder, after working in some of London’s top restaurants, including Gordon Ramsay’s, is coming back to the very site where he was born, 27 years ago. You will see Matt in the kitchen and David up front. Whether dropping in for a coffee, snack, breakfast, lunch or dinner we look forward to welcoming you. Follow our refurbishment progress on our website or pop in and say hello.

Ÿ

Admission is free and refreshments will be available This year we again have 100 large mounted photographs, the main theme is the 1970’s. They are of events and people in the village. The photos this year have all been printed and mounted by Carol Adsetts and Carol has done a super job. After the exhibition, with a few exceptions, all the photos will be handed over to Lil Smith to be sold in aid of The Pilgrims Hospice. They have all been numbered so if you wish to purchase a particular photo or a copy see Lil and her helpers. Danny Day, Minster’s archivist, will be there with his albums and other interesting items. This year we have given the stage over to Neil Lawrence of Acol to display his collection of photographs of early scenes of the village.
